Mullayanagiri to bababudanagiri trek route

This trekking route makes trekking little tricky if you are going there in your own vehicle. Because you reach the Mullayanagiri peak in the morning; park your vehicle there; start trek to the Bababudangiri; reach Bababudangiri by the evening but there is no transportation from Bababudangiri back to the Mullayanagiri peak.

In that case, you should have a driver with your vehicle who can drop you at the Mullayanagiri peak or at Sarpadhari and should be waiting for you at the BabaBudangiri to pick you up after the trek. There is a motorable road to both of the peaks and there is a trekking trail which joins the two peaks and forms the trekking route.

Mullayanagiri from Bangalore

You can also use public transport to reach Mullayanagiri peak. But for that, you would first need to reach Chikmagalur the base district town and from there hire an Auto or a jeep to the peak.

Sarpadhari trek to Mullayanagiri peak:

The Sarpadhari trek to Mullayanagiri peak starts at this point called Mullayanagiri trek Starting Point  on the Google map. You will also see a small arch iron gate to your left. It’s Sarpadhari, the trek starting point. Sarpadhari is a Kannada word which means path like a snake, ‘Sarpa’ stands for snake and ‘Dhari’ for the way.

Mullayanagiri Sarpadhari trek beginning point

Mullayanagiri Sarpadhari trek beginning point

From Chikmagalur , Sarpadhari is around 15 Kms. The Auto charges you around 300-400 to drop you there. If you are a trekking enthusiast, you should start your trek from the Sarpashari itself. Start early morning to avoid the sun. Mind that there will be a lot of fog in the morning.

You can also use the Google map to download the Sarpadhari. Sarpadhari trail is little steep sometimes. You also get to see the sunrise if you start early morning. The trek until Mullayanagiri peak takes around an hour.

Mullayanagiri to BabaBudangiri trek:

Once you reach the Mullayanagiri peak (Either directly by vehicle or by Sarpadhari trek), you can start the trek to BabaBudangiri from Mullayanagiri. The trail can be found on the Google map. Just for your information, the Mullayanagiri trail to BabaBudangiri starts behind the Shiva temple. Here is the link to the Mullayanagiri to Baba budangiri trail

If you are going to the peak with your own vehicle, it might happen that big vehicles like Tempo-traveler or MiniBus might not make it to the peak. In that case, the bus will drop you at the Seethlayanagiri Temple from where the Mullayanagiri peak is around 2 Kms along the same road.

Mullayanagiri by vehicle

Mullayanagiri by vehicle

The total trek distance from Mullayanagiri peak to the BabaBudangiri peak is around 9 Kms and it takes a time of around 5 hours if your group is fast enough. Almost after 3 Kms from the Mullayanagiri peak, you cross the Attigundi road. There is a forest department office at the crossing. You might to take permission there or pay some forest department charges. Attigundi road is the same road which joins Mullayanagiri peak to the BabaBudangiri peak by road for vehicles.

After you cross the forest department officials, the Mullayanagiri trek is mostly along the ridge. You will get to see the valley on one of the trail. You can also down the whole trail offline on your mobile phone and use GPS while trekking.

Mullayanagiri trekking tips:

  • Always look out for the white marks on the rocks or on the trail.
  • If you encounter a dead end an hour after the crossing the forest department along with the ridge, follow the GPS. The same trail continues and is located on the left.
  • Always remember the BSNL tower. The BSNL tower is located near the end.
  • At one of time, we found a bifurcation where we took the right trail and that led to nowhere. We took the left trail near the tower. Or in short, keep the GPS trail installed.
  • You can camp near the BabaBudangiri. There is a water source there called “Manikhyadhara waterfall”.
  • There are also shops near the BabaBudangiri where you can get food.
  • I am not sure of the vehicles from BabaBudangiri to the Chikmagalur. I think Autos are available.

We are planning to trek this weekend (30 oct 2016). we are planning to leave mysore early morning at 5 and will be reaching the base point round 8 am. Somewhere you mentioned that now a days they are not allowing to trek after some point. Is it possible to trek now.?

Is it possible to complete the trek by 3 pm if we reach base camp early morning around 8 am..??

Is there any safe place to park 4 wheeler near the base camp..??

There is a forest department office midway. It depends on the forest department guide. I wish he allows you guys to go further. Yeah, completing the trek by 3 PM is possible provided you walk fast and do not take long breaks. I hope you have a small number of people in your trekking group. It is safe there. But I am wondering how will return to the trek starting point?

I do not think so that tents are available for rent in Chikmagalur

' src=

Highly Informative. We are planning to head towards Mullyanagiri during september could you please clarify few questions mentioned below.

1. Is there any trekking charges involved from Sarphadari to Bababudangiri? 2. Do we have any (transit) BUS facilities to return back from Bababudangiri to Chikamagaluru back on the same day? 3. What would be the ideal time to start from Chikamagaluru to complete the whole trek in one single day. 4. Any idea on transit from kemmanagundi to chikkamagaluru (viceversa)? since we are planning to cover up some local places at kemmanagundi a day before we start trekking.

1. You might have to pay the guard in between when you cross the main road otherwise there is no any trekking charge 2. There are not any bus facilities you might to book an auto to Mullayanagiri or a jeep may be and the same while returning from bababudangiri 3. start as early as possible… road to Mullayanaigir forest reserve open at 6 in the morning to try to stick to that time before that you cant enter anyway 4. No idea about the last question and I do not think there is any transit.. maybe local buses

' src=

Do we have to take the same trail while coming down? And then how do we go from starting point of sarpdhari to Chikmanglur?

Can you please clarify what do you mean?

What about the permissions from forest dept?

So you take the permission almost on the half way near the forest department office which is half way across. Now a days, due to monsoon and an unfortunate incident which happened last year at the same time, they might not give you the permission to trek further. For more clarifications, go through the blog again. You will get to know what am I meaning to say?

' src=

Can we cook out there?

yes you can cook there

' src=

Ur blog was gud it helped alot….bt do v need sort of permission for camping???

Is permission required to camp by ourselves With our own kit..at night time in mullayanagiri….

Can u plz tell us. If camping is allowed on mullayanagiri. And I heard tat we cnt put d tent bcoz of heavy wind. Can u guide me plz. I m also planning fr 2nyt stay. Where all cn I go fr trekking.

Yeah, you can camp at mullayanagiri but do not camp at the peak… camp just below the peak… yeah wind is very high always

' src=

Ur info on d blog was useful.. N v r planning to go tis Sept. Ten Of us by five bikes , so I needed to know where can v park our vehicles ? Is it safe ? V r planning to trekk til bababudangiri.. Can v park vehicles at sarpadhari or near Shiva temple @ mullayanagiri peak ?

N can v get any accommodations @ bababudhangiri fr d nyt ?

@Parking the bikes: Lets know something about the place. Sarpadhari begins from main road and its not a safe place. Shiv temple, Mullayanaigir peak: Yes, its a safe place to park the bike. Or, Seeth?layanagiri Temple: it comes 3-4 kms before Mullayanagiri peak. From this temple until Mullayanagiri peak the road is in not so good motorable condition. So if some car is there better park here. Bikers go until mullayanagiri peak. But I cant guarantee total safety if you are leaving your bike for 6-7 hours or even more than that

Once you finish the trek, you will reach manikhayadhara waterfall… refer the map.. from there a road goes to bababudanagiri and further connects to other places…Manikhyadharra is 4-5 kms from bababudanagiri so.. either you can walk upto bababudanagiri or you can take some life from waterfall to bababudanagiri, you can find autos and bus….there will be lot of vehicles but mostly private like that happens at tourist spots but some will be public vehicles as well……

@accomodation.. there is a guest house at bababudanagiri, I am sure of this but I dont know the exact location because I camped at manikhyadhara so never really needed however some other trekking group informed me about the cottage house.. so you can try that…

coming back to bikes… I cant say much about the leaving bike at shiva temple for more than 12 hours… if you are planning soo

' src=

This place is just wow.. superb pictures.. it feels awesome when you are there between the clouds..

' src=

pls send me the forest ranger contact number

I dont have the number… why do you need the FRO contact number?

' src=

Hi There, I am planning of doing this route between 25 and 26 July, i heard hat there is no camping allowed on Mullayangiri because it comes under the wildlife area!! will be great if you could share any latest update you would have on this.

Thanks Jyothsna

You can pitch the tent at the top… Read my blog carefully again pls

Thank you i got that, one other question- We are planning to continue the trek on day 2 to Kemmangundi, would you know of any local guides who can help us out with that??

Thanks in anticipation !!

No i am not in contact with any local guide… I am sorry

' src=

Any sort of permission is required from forest department if we wish to camp near the falls?

There is no permission needed. You take the permission once you cross the highway. That permission is only for trekking. Near the waterfall there is no need of permission. Its now a days almost a public area. In the day time, you can see people doing picnic and celebrating their days

' src=

Thanks you so much for the reply….

Trekking in Mullayanagiri – Things You Should Know

January 19, 2013 by Raggi Mudde

Chikmagalur district in Karnataka has many peaks appropriate for trekking. The Western Ghats extend to form the Baba BudanGiri range. Mullayanagiri at 1,930 m above sea level is the highest peak in this range and falls in Chikmagalur district.

Mullayanagiri trek, Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur is famous for its coffee estates. The entire area receives very heavy rainfall, making the trekking routes extremely difficult to traverse in the monsoons. The winters are severe with frequent mists reducing visibility along the treacherous inclines. The best period to go trekking in Chikmagalur is between September and February.

Trekking Along the Mullayanagiri Region

Chikmagalur is around 280 km from Bangalore by road. The base for the trek, Sarpadhari, is further 15 km away. The entire trek is around 5 km and should take about 4 hours.

Chikmagalur is well connected to Bangalore by road. While traveling in a group, it is advisable to book bus tickets and accommodation in advance. Chikmagalur has hotels providing modest facilities for the traveler on a budget.

An overnight journey brings the trekker to Chikmagalur in the early hours of the morning. Buses ply after 8.00 am from Chikmagalur to Sarpadhari. The road runs amidst coffee estates and dense forests for about half an hour. Sarpadhari is a small hamlet from where a well-trodden path takes one to the peak. ‘Sarpadhari’ means serpentine path, and it is indicative of the arduous nature of the trek.

About halfway up the hill, there is a cave. The walls of this cave are multi coloured due to mineral deposits. The cave runs a good distance into the mountain and is infested with bats. The trek continues further up the hill. An ancient Shiva temple perches atop the peak. The view from the peak is breathtaking

Points To Note

  • The path from Sarpadhari is steep and at times has a 60 degree incline. This trek is definitely not for novices.
  • Mists sweep in without notice in this area, and at times, visibility comes down to less than 10 m.
  • The hillside is prone to stong gusts of wind, which adds to the chill factor.
  • Warm clothing and woollen caps are an absolute must on this trek.
  • This trek is not advisable for people who have fear of heights.
  • Amenities at the top of the hill are mediocre at best. It is advisable for the trekker to carry adequate bottles of water, beverages, and ready-to-eat food.

Places Around Mullayanagiri

Bababudanagiri is another 12 km on foot from Mullayanagiri. The trek is tiring, and it is advisable to undertake this journey in daylight. The route passes through the Bhadra Forest Reserve and sighting of wild elephants and bears is fairly commonplace. Adventurous souls can pitch camp on the hill side at Mullayanagiri and attempt the trek the next day.

Besides its coffee estates , Chikmagalur has the Kodandarama temple, Jamia Mosque, and the new St. Joseph’s Cathedral. Hiremagalur, a nearby village, has an Ishwara temple, a Kali temple, and a Parashurama temple.

Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka with a height of 6317 ft. Regarded as the highest peak between Himalayas and Nilgiris, Mullayanagiri peak is one of the best treks in Karnataka. The peak gets its name from a small temple at the summit, which is dedicated to a sage Mullappa Swamy, who is believed to have meditated at the cave near the summit. Mullayyanagiri is located in Chikkamagaluru district, 265 km from Bengaluru. Mullayanagiri is a nature lover’s paradise and a must-visit spot in South Karnataka.

Why visit Mullayanagiri:

Easy access: Mullayyanagiri peak can be reached by road without requiring extensive trekking. A small hike involving close to 500 steps is required from the parking lot to reach Mullayyanagiri peak. Mullayyanagiri Peak offers an excellent view of western ghats, captivating sunset and cool breeze. Mullayyanagiri peak can be visited all around the year. There is one spot from where trekking usually begins so you can either park your vehicles there and trek your way up the peak or you may drive further up to where you will have to climb those 500 steps.

Mullayanagiri Temple: Mullayyanagiri hill top houses a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is otherwise known as Mullappa Swami Temple(Shri Guru Gadrige Mullappa Swami Mutta) that is open from 7AM to 7PM. Puja is conducted once when the temple opens at 7AM and when it closes at 7PM.

Post your climb up to the peak and to the temple, do not forget to visit and sit inside the temple. The floor feels cold and soothing along with the feeling of peace, making you want to stay back longer there.

It is believed that there is a cave below the temple almost 900 years old that leads from this temple to Seethalayyanagiri Temple but the cave is now closed.

Mullaynagiri trek in Chikmagalur

Mulianagiri hills are one of the top sightseeing places in Chikmagalur. We were planning to visit Mulianagiri during the lockdown period. Once the doors of Chikmagalur tourism opened our team started jolting the itinerary for the Chikmagalur trip. If you are a nature lover who loves to travel to a place and relax then Chikmagalur is the perfect destination. In Chikmagalur, Mulianagiri is the perfect destination for exploring trekking and rejuvenation options.

There are many homestays in Chikmagalur where you can plan for accommodation and then explore Mulianagiri hills. You must know that Mulianagiri is not the only popular sightseeing but Bababudangiri and Muthodi forest regions are also awesome. You need at least 2 nights and 3 days to cover Chikmagalur sightseeing places completely. Yes, you can do a weekend trip for just 1 night and 2 days also but you can cover limited places only.

We were a team of 15 people with 25 different ideas about going for a trip. We could not arrive at a sensible conclusion if not it was TravelMalnad.com. One of the team members bumped on this fantastic portal by Malnad guys. The trip planner to Malnad became fun for all of us where we could explore many more options than we originally thought. The travel expert Mr. Sharath who guided us in detailed planning helped us save a lot of money while booking.

mullayanagiri chikmagalur trek

We all were skeptical about this 10-year-old holiday company, assuming them as one another travel agency. Once we started talking to the expert team then we realize all our friends and family visiting Malnad must contact them. Travel Malnad® doesn’t charge anything for giving itinerary or to book Chikmagalur homestays . We have spoken to them endlessly but they have very patiently listened to all our points.

Mullayanagiri trip:

Our journey began from Jayanagar in Bangalore as our starting point. Some of the team members reached my home the previous day and some joined on the day of departure. We left in our private cars from Jayanagar at around 6 AM. We reached Chikmagalur around noon time for lunch. Our host was waiting for us to serve the sumptuous meal that we all wanted to refresh ourselves. The host was like our extended family member and almost in no time we all were feeling comfortable just like our friend’s home.

We have planned for doing trekking to Mulianagiri along with our host’s professional guide. Mulianagiri trekking will take only 3 to 4 hours but we had a breathtaking experience. We covered around 4-5 Kms in this trek and we all had a thorough experience of trekking the most beautiful hills in Chikmagalur.

MULLAYANAGIRI

One of the most spectacular attractions in Chikmagalur is Mullayanagiri that is known for its jaw dropping natural beauty. With its calming ambience formed by lush greenery, misty weather and rugged rocks, Mullayanagiri is a heavenly place to relish your vacation. Mullayanagiri Peak is a heaven for adventure junkies who wish to partake in a number of thrilling activities like road biking, trekking and mountain biking.

Situated at a distance of 20 km and 23 km respectively from Chikmagalur and Baba Budangiri, Mullayanagiri is Karnataka’s highest peak with an altitude of 1950 meters.

There’s a small temple located on the topmost summit of this Mullayanagiri peak within which you have a small statue of Tapasvi Mullappa Swamy.

According to the regional mythology, Tapasvi Mullappa Swamy observed meditation for years at the cave on top of the Mullayanagiri peak.

This is the reason why the peak got its present identity. The old Kannada literature, however, relates the term ‘Mullai’ to the forests.

The caves at the top of the Mullayanagiri hills are not so deep and has an entrance which directly leads you to the temple’s garbhagudi.

Adventure buffs have a lot of things to do here as the destination serves as a hub for trekking, mountain biking, and road biking.

Nestling amidst the Nilgiris and the mighty Himalayas, the panoramic beauty of Mullayanagiri is astounding. This is what makes the Mullayanagiri peaks as one of the most appealing destinations for intermediate trekkers.

The trekking route to the topmost summit of Mullayanagiri starts from Sarpadhari which extends up to 3 km. It is relatively steep; yet you can easily cover the distance within 1.5 hours.

There’s a Nandi statue, small streams, and a cave with a small water source to adore on your way.

As there are no food or water reserves, you need to carry enough of them with you. Otherwise, you need to hold on your hunger and thirst until you reach the Lord Shiva temple located at the top.
