Want-away Manchester City star confirms desire to leave Etihad Stadium this summer

Manchester City and Portugal international Joao Cancelo has confirmed his desire to re-join FC Barcelona this summer ahead of the forthcoming 2024/25 campaign.

The 30-year-old is currently away on international duty with Roberto Martinez’s Portugal at the European Championships in Germany, but continues to face an uncertain future at club level for the second successive summer.

Cancelo has been largely kept out of the Manchester City first-team picture since January 2023, when the player instructed his representatives to find him an exit from the Etihad Stadium, with Bayern Munich stepping forward to agree a six-month loan.

However, with the German club rejecting the chance to purchase the defender on a permanent agreement worth around €70 million, Barcelona took advantage and secured the player to a season-long loan for the most-recent campaign.

With that deal having now concluded, and the player moving towards a return to Manchester City for their pre-season tour of the United States, Joao Cancelo has commented on what he would like the future to hold heading into the forthcoming season.

Speaking to Fútbol Emotion this week , Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo admitted his happiness with life at the Catalan giants, and indicated how comfortable both he and his family are working and living with the La Liga club.

The 30-year-old explained, as translated and relayed by Fabrizio Romano , “I really like being at Barça, I am very comfortable.” He continued, “My family, my daughter, my wife also. We hope that next year we will be here!”

Cancelo was a largely integral part of the system implemented by the now-former Barcelona boss Xavi last season, and is understood to be a part of new boss Hansi Flick’s plans at the La Liga club, should officials be able to finance a deal with Manchester City.

Across all competitions during the last campaign, Joao Cancelo registered a total of 42 appearances across La Liga and UEFA Champions League competition, scoring four goals and providing a further five assists.

Cancelo’s European Championship campaign with Portugal has also gotten off to a successful start, as the player largely operated in a left-midfield role in the dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Czech Republic in the group stage of the tournament.

That late August visit from Liverpool recalls Erik ten Hag’s first season, when an unlikely 2-1 win on a highly-charged evening at Old Trafford salvaged his difficult start to life as United manager.

Things have not got much easier since and Ten Hag will hope he does not go into that fixture once again needing a positive result to ease some early pressure.

United’s opening run is not too bad, although trips to Selhurst Park and Villa Park either side of a visit from Tottenham Hotspur arrive just as the expanded Europa League campaign gets underway.

Ten Hag’s side will visit the Etihad Stadium only a fortnight after returning from the Emirates in December but meetings with the rest of the so-called ‘big six’ never follow one after another and, for the most part, are spread out.

United’s closing pair of fixtures could be crucial, though, against two other clubs whose ambition will be qualifying for the Champions League .

If that is still in play by the time of United’s trip to Stamford Bridge on the penultimate weekend and the visit from Aston Villa on the final day, that’ll at least be an improvement on last season.

Key dates for the 2024-25 season

The transfer window officially opened on Friday, June 14, with the infamous cut-off date for the 2023-24 profit and sustainability rules (PSR) reporting period coming at the end of the month on June 30. The window closes on Friday, August 30, at 11pm BST (6pm ET).

The winter transfer window will open on Wednesday, January 1, closing on Monday, February 3.

The new Premier League season gets underway on the weekend of August 16-18, a week after the Community Shield. That game will be another Manchester derby and a replay of last season’s FA Cup final.

The Premier League season finishes on Sunday, May 25, when all 10 fixtures will be played at the same time.

Premier League clubs will enter the FA Cup at the third round, which begins on Saturday, January 11. The Carabao Cup will begin in mid-August with Premier League teams not playing in Europe entering in the second round and the remaining seven clubs receiving a bye to the third round.

The newly-expanded Champions League, meanwhile, begins on September 17. The Europa League starts on September 25 and the Conference League gets underway on October 3.

What about the Europa League?

Manchester United’s FA Cup triumph last season secured Europa League football for the coming campaign.

Next season’s Europa League will be the first under a new format, as all three of UEFA’s club competitions undergo a reshuffle.

The Europa League group stage will become a single 36-team league phase. Each side plays eight different teams — four at home and four away — and the top eight automatically progress to the last 16. Ninth to 24th contest a knockout round play-off to determine the remaining eight last 16 sides.

Manchester City will play their crucial Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow in front of a sold-out Etihad Stadium – but only after they resorted to offering two-for-one tickets to reach capacity.

City came in for criticism in their last Champions League group game to be played at home as they failed to sell-out tickets for the 1-1 draw with Roma, something that The Independent’s columnist Paul Scholes questioned due to the importance of the fixture following the opening defeat to Bayern Munich.

Only 37,509 fans attended the draw with the Italian side, but a capacity 45,500 – Uefa reduces the maximum capacity from 46,708 – is expected to turnout for Wednesday night’s match.

Added to this problem is that CSKA Moscow fans are banned from travelling to the game due to the sanction imposed on them by Uefa for the “racist behaviour” by their fans during the trip to Roma in September. The same ban should have seen the 2-2 draw between City and CSKA at the Arena Khimki played behind closed doors, but a portion of CSKA fans were able to gain access due to sponsor ticket holders allowed to attend the match.

With that in mind, City need to fill the stadium with their own fans on a Wednesday night, and having shown difficulty in doing so already this season, they have offered a two-for-one deal on the game to attract more fans.

There’s no doubting that Manuel Pellegrini’s side need all the support they can get, as they languish down in third in Group E with just two points, two off Roma and a worrying seven off Bayern. Anything but victory would likely see City miss out of progression to the last-16, while defeat would mean they would need to beat Bayern at home and Roma away with results also going in their favour to stand any chance of reaching the first knockout stage.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

An excellent read! Thanks for much for sharing the Russian metro system with us. We're heading to Moscow in April and exploring the metro stations were on our list and after reading your post, I'm even more excited to go visit them. Thanks again 🙂
