How to get to Co-op Live or Etihad Stadium as Barry Manilow and City play the same day

  • Etihad Stadium
  • Wednesday 15 May 2024 at 2:49pm

Manchester City's Erling Haaland and Barry Manilow

Transport chiefs are warning football and music fans to make advanced journey plans as Manchester City and Barry Manilow both take centre stage in the city at neighbouring venues.

On Sunday 18 May 2024, Manchester City are hoping to win the Premier League title in their final game of the season at the Etihad Stadium and the legendary American singer Barry Manilow will be performing at the new Co-op Live Arena.

Transport for Greater Manchester is urging people travelling to the concert, match or other destinations to plan ahead and use public transport.

Barry Manilow fans have Metrolink tram travel included with their event ticket - valid for four hours before and after the show – which can also be used on the post-event shuttle buses from Co-op Live to the city centre.

Travel on commercial bus services is not included with event tickets but further information can be  found online.    Parking at Co-op Live has sold out and a strict residents parking scheme is in operation around the venue.

While public transport and active travel are strongly encouraged, an alternative may be to park in one of city centre multi-storeys and take a tram, walk, wheel or cycle to Etihad Campus to complete the journey.

Metrolink will operate a double-tram service between the city centre and Etihad Campus both before and after the match.

City supporters can also make use of a bespoke shuttle bus service to the city centre, or travel on one of the 17 supporters bus services from across Greater Manchester and the surrounding area.

Buses will leave later, at 7.15pm, if City win the Premier League title. More details on the match day bus network can be found on the TfGM and Manchester City websites.      Public transport will be busiest immediately before and after the events and passengers may have to wait to board their services.

The Etihad Campus is just a 35-minute walk from the city centre, giving City and Barry Manilow fans the option of walking or cycling to their respective events.       A regenerated step-free, well-lit, interactive walking route (also marked on maps as ‘CityLink’) is clearly signposted from Piccadilly Station and through the Ancoats and New Islington areas.

Helpers will be on hand to support people as they make their way to and from the events.        It also takes just 10 minutes to cycle via Merrill Street, then on to the CityLink by Holt Town tram stop.

There are over 500 cycle parking spaces on the Etihad Campus once you get to the arena.       Danny Vaughan, Chief Network Officer at TfGM, said: “We’re expecting it to be a really busy Sunday with Barry Manilow in town and Manchester City on the brink of a fourth consecutive Premier League title – that’s why we’ve worked with partners on plans to ensure our transport network is as robust as possible on the day.        “We want everyone to have a great time and, would encourage those off to the Etihad or Co-op Live to use public transport for their journeys, or consider walking, cycling or wheeling as the best way to get to and from their destination.        “Planning and preparation for events such as this is done in great detail and there will be plenty of staff on hand to help and support people making their way to and from their destination.

Enhanced bus and tram services will be in place and we will also be monitoring the network and providing up to date travel information so people’s journeys run as smoothly as possible.”        While public transport and active travel are encouraged, an alternative for drivers may be to park in one of city centre multi-storeys and take a tram, walk, wheel or cycle to Etihad Campus to complete the journey.       Further information on getting to the Co-op Live Arena and the Etihad Stadium can be found on the TfGM website.

Premier League title permutations: How Arsenal and Manchester City can be crowned champions

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - MARCH 31: Bukayo Saka of Arsenal battles for possession with Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City during the Premier League match between Manchester City and Arsenal FC at Etihad Stadium on March 31, 2024 in Manchester, England. (Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images) (Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)

The Premier League ’s title race will go down to the final day of the season.

Manchester City’s 4-0 win against Fulham on Saturday saw them move two points ahead of Arsenal , with Josko Gvardiol (two), Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez the scorers at Craven Cottage in a game that narrowed the north London side’s significant goal-difference advantage.

But Arsenal returned to the top of the league with a 1-0 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday — having only won once in their previous 16 visits to that stadium.

With such fine margins set to decide who lifts the Premier League title next Sunday, The Athletic breaks down the state of play.

This article will continue to be updated with each set of results.

The top of the Premier League

What if the teams are level on points.

If Arsenal and City finish on the same points, the title will be decided by which side has the better goal difference. Failing that, it will come down to the number of goals scored, then the team who won the most points in the head-to-head matches, and then who scored the most away goals in the head-to-head.

Should it come to that, Arsenal have the head-to-head advantage over City. Arsenal beat City 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium in October before the teams played out a goalless draw at the Etihad Stadium in March.

Remaining fixtures

Manchester city.

  • Tottenham Hotspur (A) — May 14 (8pm BST, 3pm ET, 12pm PT)
  • West Ham United (H) — May 19 (4pm BST, 11am ET, 8am PT)
  • Everton (H) — May 19 (4pm BST, 11am ET, 8am PT)

How Manchester City can win the title

The task for City is, at face value, relatively simple: win their remaining two games and they will be crowned Premier League champions for the fourth year in a row. No side has ever achieved such a feat in the top flight of English football.

If City lose or draw against Tottenham on Tuesday, though, the door is open for Arsenal ahead of the final round of fixtures after they beat Manchester United on Sunday. City would then go into the final day needing to better Arsenal’s result, due to their inferior goal difference, to have a chance of lifting the Premier League trophy.

In the scenario where City draw against Spurs and both sides are then victorious in their final games, City must win by at least one more goal than Arsenal do to level the goal difference.

If City beat Spurs, they will be two points ahead of Mikel Arteta’s side and know that equalling or bettering their result on the final day will be enough.

City have already faced Tottenham away this season, winning 1-0 in January's FA Cup fourth-round win (Photo: Catherine Ivill/Getty Images)

Why have Manchester City’s Premier League charges not been dealt with yet?

How Arsenal can win the title

Following City’s victory over Fulham on Saturday, Arsenal knew they realistically had to win both their games to have a chance at securing their first Premier League title since the 2003-04 season.

They did half the job on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Manchester United thanks to Leandro Trossard ’s first-half goal, a result which firmly puts the pressure on City ahead of their game in hand.

If City were to lose against Tottenham, Arsenal would need to equal or better their result on the final day.

If City were to draw against Spurs, they would be level on points with Arsenal but the north London club would be ahead due to their goal difference advantage. Arsenal would again need to equal or better City’s result on the final day but, if both teams win, Arteta’s side would need a victory by a sufficient margin so as to maintain their superior goal difference.

If City beat Spurs, they would go two points ahead of Arsenal. Arsenal would then need to win against Everton and hope City fail to do the same on the final day against West Ham.

Jarrod Bowen

Bowen named in England training squad ahead of UEFA Euro 2024

West Ham United forward Jarrod Bowen has been included in England’s 33-man provisional squad for UEFA Euro 2024.

The 27-year-old will link up with the Three Lions for warm-up friendlies against Bosnia & Herzegovina at St James’ Park on Monday 3 June (7.45pm BST) and Iceland at Wembley on Friday 7 June (7.45pm BST), as he bids for a seat on the plane to Germany.

Boss Gareth Southgate will analyse his options up close in training at St George’s Park and in match action over the next two-and-a-half weeks, before naming his final 26-man selection on Saturday 8 June.

Jarrod Bowen

Recently-crowned Hammer of the Year Bowen has impressed throughout 2023/24, finishing as the Club’s top scorer by netting 20 times in all competitions, and equalling Paolo Di Canio’s record for goals in a single Premier League season (16).

While he struck a career-first hat-trick against Brentford in February and also chipped in with ten assists from various positions at the top end of the field, our No20 won two of his seven England caps during the last international window in March.

Having made his debut against Hungary back in June 2022, Bowen started for the Three Lions against Belgium two months ago, three days after coming off the bench at home to five-time world champions Brazil.

England are set to get their Euro 2024 campaign underway against Serbia at 8pm BST on Sunday 16 June in Gelsenkirchen, before further Group C fixtures against Denmark (5pm BST, Thursday 20 June) and Slovenia (8pm BST, Tuesday 25 June) in Frankfurt and Cologne respectively.
