Review: The New Trek Madone Is Extra Smooth and Still Very Fast

The Trek Madone is one of the most recognizable modern race bikes on the market today.

It came to market in 2003 with a name pulled from a French climb and was quickly synonymous with winning under Lance Armstrong. Those were the early days of carbon fiber and long before aero was everything.

Although the tubes used carbon, they were still mostly round and the Madone was Trek’s do-everything race bike. In 2016, everything changed.

Although the Madone had added aero details steadily since around 2012, weight had remained important. Then the Emonda came to market as a climber’s bike with weight as the ultimate goal. The new bike gave the Madone a new freedom. Aero was everything, weight didn’t matter, and the 2016 Trek Madone was completely different.

Today, eight years later, everything changes again. The Trek Madone is returning to its roots as an all-around race bike and the Emonda is disappearing.

Trek will tell you this is purely because of innovation but it’s largely a result of the UCI keeping the minimum bike weight (6.8kg/15 pounds) unchanged. More and more brands have managed to hit the minimum weight without sacrificing aero performance. The Emonda is no longer needed to offer what the Madone can’t — at least so long as the UCI minimum weight remains the same.

To understand what that means, my latest bike review is the updated Gen 8 Trek Madone I’ve been riding for close to a month now. I tested a top-spec Trek Madone SLR 9 AXS and what I found is that the Emonda disappearing is only a small footnote in the details of this bike. Nearly everything about the 2025 model year Trek Madone is new and the result is a bike unlike anything else.

As a final goodbye to the bike, I attempted to take it on a 230-mile trip to the beach and back. Things didn’t quite work out as planned, but my time with the Trek Madone was spent marveling at how smooth and comfortable it is. If you are looking for a new road bike this summer, keep reading to see what works and what doesn’t on the latest Madone.

Trek Madone SLR 9 AXS frame details

The Gen 8 Trek Madone, is an attempt by Trek to turn back the clock. The Emonda came to market as a solution for a problem. Now there’s a better solution and Trek is recombining the Madone and the Emonda. The question is, can you do that without losing anything?

To answer that, Trek started by looking to add aerodynamics to the Emonda. Pretty quickly it was clear that a weight first focus wouldn’t cut it. You can add aerodynamics to a lightweight frame but it’s not as difficult as it once was to match the UCI minimum weight. A brand either has to blow past the UCI weight limit, ala the Specialized Aethos , or make an aero bike just light enough.

Having once again proven that, Trek started expanding the possibilities. Instead of a new Emonda, the goal was now to create a bike that was faster than both the Emonda and the Madone on any gradient between zero and 12 percent.

To get there, Trek developed a pair of algorithms that would both develop cross section shapes and test them. You can think of it as a brute force attack on aerodynamics and it allowed a speed of testing that would otherwise be impossible. This process led to a new shape called “Pareto” that’s more square than previously thought efficient. It minimizes weight while maximizing aerodynamics and it provides a range of options.

With that in mind, the next stage of development was to use those new building blocks to create a bike. Some of the shapes identified were lighter, some more aero, and the team used a combination of CFD and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to find the best places for different shapes. Instead of simply trying to use the most aero option at every opportunity, Trek instead takes a system approach the brand is calling “Full System Foil.”

The idea here is that air flows at different speeds around different parts of the bike. Interactions at the front of the bike, or with the rider, sometimes slow it down and sometimes speed it up. Knowing this means different solutions are needed in different places. A chunky downtube that’s lighter and less aero makes sense because the front wheel slows the air. This slower air means low-drag shapes are less important for the downtube. At the same time, the legs of the rider actually speed up the airflow as it passes through. For that reason the area where you’d normally find a seat tube and post benefits from aero shapes and Trek uses the isoFlow design with aero shapes for the seat mast and post.

The last example Trek gives is the new Aero RSL Road integrated bar/stem. This is another piece that’s actually slower if you look at it in isolation. That increased drag is intentional though. According to Trek, the “wake of the thicker handlebar slightly reduces drag on the pedaling legs by slowing down the air in front of them.” Given that a rider’s legs are a bigger drag contributor, the net effect is a gain.

Overall, those little details are the point. Each little aero detail adds up and Trek quotes a 0.1 watt saving at 22 mph for the Madone Gen 8 vs Gen 7. If that sounds small, it is — but a win is a win and the numbers compared to the old Madone aren’t that important anyway. The place where you see bigger numbers is when compared to the Emonda. That comparison shows an 11.3 watt advantage at 22 mph while also dropping the weight to a 36 gram penalty for the vastly more aero bike. If you are curious, there’s also a savings of 322 grams for the frame and fork when compared to the Gen 7 Madone.

Trek Madone SLR Geometry

Although the various geometry options disappeared before this generation, that continues. There’s no longer a reference to various names and it’s the same as the previous h1.5. There’s also less sizes covering more range with a move from eight options, labeled using the seat tube length, down to six options labeled XS-XL. As you move up and down those sizes, Trek is offering size-specific tube shapes to go with them. Smaller and larger bikes will now have better balanced stiffness, better aesthetics, and actual wind tunnel testing.

Trek Madone build details

One of the innovations that comes to the Gen 8 Trek Madone is the new full carbon one-piece fork. The same fork comes on every model of the bike but there’s also an updated 900 series OCLV carbon only available for the SLR builds. Along with the new carbon, the SLR builds also bring the addition of the one-piece bar and stem, electronic only groupset compatibility, and the aero bottle system. If you do decide to start with an SL build, the bar/stem and the aero bottle system are available as aftermarket accessories.

Among the build options you will also find customization options. If you prefer a frameset only, there’s one available in both carbon options. If you’d rather have a complete build but you want to customize the details, check out Project One. If you, like me, prefer better climbing gears and a 1:1 ratio, you could change the gearing that comes with your bike as well as any other sizing details. You can also adjust components up or down and there’s plenty of paint options. Depending on budget you can stick to picking a simple color scheme for no up-charge or take a look at the Project One ICON series premium paint schemes. Launching with the bike is a new option in that lineup called Chroma Interstellar.

Ride experience

Sometimes testing doesn’t go according to plan. My plan with this bike was to cap off more than a month of riding with it by doing a roughly 230-mile ride from my house to the coast and back. I’d written headlines talking about spending 15-hours (just a guess) on it and I’d prepared the bike. After 10 miles, my riding partner and I collided, the bike went down, and the UDH broke. The ride was over. I could hide that but I think there’s value in what it says about the Trek Madone Gen 8 even if it didn’t go off as planned.

The idea of the trip came to me because of how this bike felt. From the very first moment I swung my leg over it, I was immediately blown away by how smooth it is. The terrible pavement as I leave my neighborhood is nearly imperceptible on the Madone. As I went over a rough wooden bridge on a later ride I realized that it was actually a moment I could attack as my buddy slowed. At one point I even started to wonder how well it would do off-road on its max 32 mm tires.

I initially worried that it was smooth because it had a lot of flex but as soon as you stand, you know that’s not the case. My notes from those early rides are all questions trying to get to the bottom of when it feels stiff vs compliant. The more I tested, the more amazed I was with the dual nature of the latest Madone.

If you cruise with it, it’s smooth and comfortable. If you push it, the bike responds. Stand to sprint and it feels like a different bike. When it’s time to climb, the 6.9kg (as measured ready to ride minus pedals) and stiff frame are willing partners. This dual nature is backed up with a comfortable riding position as well.

Like with the Enve Melee , holding the tops puts you somewhat upright. Trek counters the upright position with the Trek Aero RSL Road integrated bar/stem that uses a proven trick of simply being narrow. Size it like other bars on the market and you’ll notice narrower hoods that provide a big aero upgrade. I tend to find this unnoticeable and, given it’s faster, that’s a good thing. The only detail I would love to see addressed is the narrow, rounded, nature of the bar immediately behind the controls. If this was my bike, I’d want to add a bit more padding right there.

As far as the rest of the finishing kit goes, there’s not a single detail I can complain about. Bontrager Aeolus Pro 51 TLR Disc Road Wheel shrugged off crosswinds and felt fast. The Aero bottles are very usable plus offer an easy 3ish watts savings depending on speed (3.7 watts at 45 km/h) and I love the outfront mount. That’s something I often complain about because it can be such an annoyance when it’s not right, but this time Trek nailed it. Even the included saddle is great and actually a piece I’ve used on other bikes a number of times over the years. If any of those details, including specifics like gearing, aren’t quite right for you, then Project One will fix it without issue.

The Gen 8 Trek Madone is the kind of bike I want to share with you. When I packed it up to head to the beach, I swapped out the aero bottles for a set of HydraPak Breakaway+ 30oz bottles (with the filter swapped for standard tops) and it just worked without issue. Then I added the light mount and attached an Outbound Lighting Detour . Again, everything just worked.

That idea of things just working is what I look for in a bike. Trek wants to talk about smashing an aero bike and a climbing bike together but that’s only part of the story. The Madone is so comfortable, smooth, and usable that Trek is really offering one bike to cover all of your needs. If you want to do some kind of huge ride, that’s a five-minute swap from fast bike to long distance bike. If you want to take a bike out climbing grab this one. If you have a fast and flat day, the Madone works there too.

However you decide to use it, Trek thought through all the little details. Creating a good quality outfront mount is a small thing that has a big impact on your experience of riding a bike, Trek nailed that for you. There’s aero bottles but they are good for drinking water and you can also use standard bottles if you need to. You can go fast or slow over rough or smooth pavement and the Gen 8 Trek Madone is a capable partner. If there’s anything you want changed, Trek makes it easy to customize your build. Even the builds with included power meter are part of the picture. Nothing ever feels cheap and, sadly, that’s not always true even on a bike this expensive.

The only thing that kept sticking in my mind during this test was whether I wanted a bike this smooth all the time. The first time I took it out I’d just gotten off my Look 795 Blade RS while testing the Specialized Roval Rapide CLX II wheels. The Trek is just as fast, I actually matched my fastest time, but it doesn’t feel as fast. The Look is a visceral ride with controls that are two inches lower. It’s not smooth, it requires a good stretch before and after a ride, and the combination of those wheels and the Hope RX4+ brakes make for a lot of noises. When you ride that bike, you feel like you are pulling the performance out of it. The Trek Madone is just as fast but it lacks all the drama. Is that a good thing?

To measure your height, stand straight up, barefoot, with your back, heels, shoulders and head all touching a wall. While looking straight ahead, place a book or straight edge on your head and slowly push it against the wall. Your straight edge should be parallel with the floor. Mark the spot where the bottom of the book is touching the wall. The distance from the marked spot to the floor is your height.

What is your inseam?

How to measure: Stand barefoot with your back straight and against a wall. Tuck a ruler or something that extends to the floor between your legs. Using both hands, and keeping it level, pull the ruler up into your crotch as if you were sitting on the saddle. Measure the distance from the top edge of the ruler to the ground to find your inseam measurement. Your inseam is very important to your final bike size so please measure carefully.

The 1.2 is the middle of Trek's three 1 Series aluminium road bikes, sitting between the Shimano Claris-equipped 1.1 (£575) and the 1.5 (£750), which comes with Shimano Tiagra components.

Is it the right bike for you? We've picked out four reasons why it might be, along with a reason that might make you think twice.

1 It provides solid performance with few surprises

The 1.2 puts in a solid performance out on the road, offering a stable, predictable ride, the only real disappointment being the lack of braking power (see below).

Hitting the scales at 9.48kg (20.9lb), the 1.2 isn't as lively as many lighter bikes, but for £650 this is certainly a decent enough weight. Compared to bikes of a similar price, it accelerates well. You'll find a little more flex in the frame and fork than in higher level models in Trek's range, but this is a bike that's well capable of holding its own when you crank up the power.

You could't say that the 1.2 is the fastest climber but it's far from sluggish when things get lumpy. It's helped in its hill-climbing endeavours by a compact chainset (with 50-tooth and 34-tooth chainrings rather than 52 or 53 and 39). Most bikes of this price come with something similar these days. Matched up to an 11-28-tooth cassette, it'll allow you to get up the vast majority of gradients without your knees popping or your lungs bursting, while still providing enough big gears to keep you bowling along quickly on the flat and downhill.

Aluminium frames have a reputation for feeling harsh but that's a gross generalisation. Some are jarring – as some carbon frames are – but plenty aren't. This bike is certainly comfortable enough for racking up the big miles.

For a start, it comes in Trek's H2 fit. That requires a brief explanation. Compared to Trek's H1 fit, H2 has a taller head tube: 3cm taller in the case of our 58cm test model. Why? It puts you into a more upright riding position with less strain on your lower back and neck. You could achieve a similar position by adding a bunch of headset spacers on an H1 bike, but if you want your bars at that height, you're better off going for an H2 fit because the front end will be stiffer and the handling will be better.

The Bontrager Race VR-C alloy handlebar has a shallower drop than usual too: 124mm rather than the 145mm you get on Bontrager's Race Lite Classic, for example. That means it's that much easier to get down on the drops. A lot of people have a bar with a deep drop and rarely take their hands off the hoods.

The other reason for the comfort is that the 1.2 is inherently pretty smooth. Sure, there are plenty of bikes out there that will filter our more road vibration but this one does a decent enough job on that front. Swapping the 23mm tyres for 25s would add more comfort but this bike isn't crying out for them by any means.

The Bontrager Gel Cork bar tape provides good cushioning for your hands and the Bontrager Affinity 1 saddle has plenty of padding too. Truth be told, I found it a little too soft, verging on squidgy, but everyone has their own taste when it comes to saddles.

2 You get a neat, well-proven frame and fork

All three bikes in the 1 Series share the same 100 Series Alpha Aluminium frame. It's fairly busy looking with a squared off upper edge to the down tube that makes it resemble that of Trek's more costly Madone.

The top tube slopes towards the seat tube junction and tapers down as it does so, and slim seatstays provide compliance at the back.

You get mounts for a mudguard and a rack back there too. They'll be useful if you want to ride the bike year round and perhaps carry stuff to and from work on a daily commute.

You don't get the oversized bottom bracket or tapered head tube that are regular features designed to add stiffness to higher-end performance bikes, but this is a £650 bike and the frame is good for the money. The welds are pretty tidy throughout and the same can be said of the paint job.

The fork is Trek's own with carbon blades and an alloy steerer. Like the frame, it comes with eyelets for fitting mudguards that will save a lot of faffing.

It's worth noting that the Trek 1.2 is available in eight sizes from 47cm up to 62cm. That range will cover nearly everyone.

3 Shimano's Sora shifters and mechs are excellent for the money

Nine-speed Sora is Shimano's fifth tier road groupset (if you don't count the electronic variants) and it offers fantastic value for money.

Back in the olden days (before last year), you changed gear on Sora by pushing the brake lever to the side or by using a small thumb lever on the side of the shifter body, depending on the direction you wanted to shift.

Now, though, Sora levers are Dual Control, so instead of that thumb lever, there's a lever tucked behind the brake lever. It's the same design that Shimano use right up to top-level Dura-Ace and it's a big improvement, making it far easier to change gear from the drops.

Resting your hands on the hoods is comfortable and there's a little gear indicator on the top of each of the levers that you might find useful. I can't say I ever checked them – I just couldn't get into the habit – but they're there if you want to.

Whereas the gear cables run underneath the bar tape on Shimano's higher level groupsets, they head out from the side of the levers with Sora and loop around to the frame in the fresh air. That's certainly not a problem from a functional point of view, although visually it's a less tidy way of doing things. That's being picky, though. Sora shifting has taken a massive leap forward with this latest design. It works very much like the highest level offerings from Shimano, just adding a little weight. Even there, the difference isn't massive.

Trek don't give you a complete Sora groupset here, just the shifters and mechs. The chainset is FSA Vero, a square taper design that does its job just fine, and the brakes, as mentioned, are unbranded.

Most other big brand bikes at this price, such as the Giant Defy 3 (£649) and the Felt F95 (£649), have Shimano Sora components too. It's worth comparing the spec sheets to see exactly how they match up, but don't buy a bike solely on that basis.

4 Bontrager's wheels and other components are good, reliable kit

The wheels are made up from Bontrager's own alloy hubs, containing cup and cone (rather than cartridge) bearings, and Tubeless Ready http://www.bontrager.com/technology/why_tubeless_ready rims. That means you can run the wheels without inner tubes at some point in the future, although you'll need to upgrade to Tubeless Ready tyres first.

The tyres that come fitted as standard are Bontrager's T1s (700 x 23). They're some pretty hefty rubber, made for durability rather than all-out speed, but they're reasonably resistant to punctures and they hold the road well even in damp conditions.

I had no problems at all with the wheels during the month-long test period. They're not the lightest wheels ever, taking some coaxing up to speed, but they're still as round and as true as they were out of the box, and there's a lot to be said for trouble-free operation. Fast wheels aren't so fast when you're standing on the side of the road trying to remove a broken spoke.

Most of the rest of the kit is no-nonsense stuff from Bontrager too, the handlebar, stem and seatpost being reliable alloy options and the Affinity 1 saddle providing at least as much cushioning as most people will want.

And the compromises

There are no two ways about it, the 1.2's brakes are disappointing. Trek have put the Shimano Sora theme to one side here and specced nameless dual pivot callipers that lack bite. Don't get me wrong, they're consistent and they'll stop you, just not as quickly as you might like. You have to engage the brakes for a bit longer than normal or pull the levers a bit harder to get down to your desired speed.

You adjust to this within a ride or two and don't really think about it until you ride with people who have better brakes on their bikes, or jump back on to a bike with better brakes yourself. Then you're struck by the contrast.

Swapping the brake pads helps, but the bottom line is that these brakes are a compromise to make a price point and, for me, they're the weakest aspect of the entire bike.

Other compromises? There's nothing that really stands out. Trek offer a decent all-round package here.

The Trek 1.2 is a very good bike for the money. The frame and fork are sound, reliable options and the Sora shifters and mechs are better than anything previously available for this kind of cash. They're a great example of the benefits of trickle down technology.

Yes, if you pay a couple of hundred pounds more you'll get a lighter bike that leaps into life more eagerly when you up the intensity for a sprint or tough climb, but that's always the way. As it is, the Trek 1.2 is a very able road bike that'll reward your efforts with decent speed, and it's comfortable enough to ride all day long. The fact that it comes with mudguard and rack eyelets increases its versatility, so you can use it as a year-round workhorse if that's what you're after.

We'd have no hesitation recommending this bike for someone after their first proper road bike, or for anyone else looking for plenty of value.

It's a tried and tested frame built to a high quality. The same goes for the carbon leg/alloy steerer fork.

The frame is made from aluminium: what Trek call 100 Series Alpha Aluminium.

The 1.2 is built to Trek's H2 geometry that I've explained in the body of the review. Essentially, it's slightly more relaxed than a full-on aggressive race position, but it's still speed orientated.

How was the bike in terms of height and reach? How did it compare to other bikes of the same stated size?

It's a little taller at the front end than a traditional low and stretched road bike.

Riding the bike

Was the bike comfortable to ride? Tell us how you felt about the ride quality.

I found it comfortable both in terms of ride position and ride quality. It's certainly a long way from being a bone shaker.

Did the bike feel stiff in the right places? Did any part of the bike feel too stiff or too flexible?

It's not mega-stiff but it's not too flexy either.

Which components had the most effect (good or bad) on the bike's comfort? would you recommend any changes?

I found the saddle a touch too squidgy for my taste, but I'd rather that than too firm.

In all of these marks, I'm comparing the bike to similarly priced alternatives.

Nearly all big brand bikes at this price have these features: aluminium frame, fork with carbon legs and alloy steerer, an incomplete Shimano Sora groupset (chainset and brakes being the most frequent omissions), in-house aluminium handlebar, stem and seatpost. If you simply compare spec lists, you'll see that the 1.2 comes out better than some and not quite as well as others.

However, we'd caution against making a decision based solely on a comparison of spec sheets. We've not reviewed all of the 1.2's chief rivals, but we can tell you that this bike will provide you with a very good all-round performance, the brakes being the only real low point.

I'm riding this bike now for over 6 years. Inexpensive when bought for  €600. Needed maintenance about 2 years ago which was about €400 (new wheelset, cassette/chain/cabling etc). I've replaced the 700x23-tyres by 700x25-tyres a long time ago without changing anything else. Works like a charm.

Great value for the money but brakes could indeed be better. Meanwhile looking to add a new bike (and use this one solely on the Tacx) with disc-brakes.

The current Trek 1 Series bikes have plenty of clearance for fixed mudguards, even with a 25mm tyre. The 2013 1.2 had little clearance, and this was because Trek used the 2 series frame for that particular year. I'm guessing evo_playa has one of these. Agree that SKS Raceblade Long guards are great. The lack of availability is due to a redesign - SKS are developing the new version to allow for bikes with disc brakes. I gather they won't be available until this autumn at the earliest. UK distributors sold out of the old versions months ago.

Seems like a comparable spec and set up to other value bikes. Agree that even low spec bikes are good and has recently made me question my prior choice of 105 or nothing. Anyone know if Claris is any good ? Always found the Trek styling a bit bland but this one looks ok. The 8 speed Sora front and rear Derailleurs on my Trek are long since worn out and were replaced with Claris just before the winter kicked in. It works really smooth with no problems - even on the old Sora shifters with thumb button.

I've had the 2011 1.1 with shimano 2300 (remember that?) for just over 4 years now, and it certainly scrubs up well. Even with just 2300 and a different wheelset I've raced on it for a couple of years to some success, it certainly doesn't feel like it holds me back, which is very impressive for such a cheap machine. In fact, I like it enough to complete the change to 5700 groupset in the spring.

I can't say I ever had a problem with the brake calipers, and I can't tell the difference between the alloy calipers and the Shimano long drop calipers having swapped them out- they are certainly good enough.

However, I'm not a fan of the H2 fit with the massive head tube- I hate long head tubes and was lucky to get mine before they were introduced.

Excellent winter trainer and commuter. My 2007 Trek 1.2 is still going strong - it's had a few minor changes but still has the Sora 8 speed with thumb button - oh and a pannier rack!

It's still a lovely bike to ride and recommended first road bike.

Quite. I can't really understand why they'd have clearances so tight, seems unecessary. It may be that 25mm tyres would work with some mudguards already mentioned, but probably not full guards that also help keep crud off the chainset especially in winter.

Word of warning though, if it is like my Trek 1.2 with the carbon fork you will be lucky to get a fixed mudguard that fits even though the bike has mudguard eyelets.

Clearance on the front is not good and i had to end up using Crud mudguards for the front wheel.

Fairly simple and inexpensive to swap out the substandard brake calipers.

I upgraded my Trek 1.1 to Shimano non series long drop brake calipers and the difference in braking was amazing.

Fastest Bike Frames and Wheels at Each Zwift Level

If you’re racing on Zwift, upgrading your frame and wheels can cut some significant time off your efforts. But figuring out where to spend your hard-earned Drops can be confusing! So we’ve put together this table which lists the fastest frame and wheelset available at every Zwift level.

(Keep in mind this list applies only to flat and rolling routes . The list below is essentially a simplified, flat-race-focused version of our complete Zwift Shopping Guide . If the climbs in your race last more than a few minutes, you may want to consider a more climbing-friendly setup.)

(Also, this list does not include TT frames, since those aren’t allowed in typical Zwift road races. TT frames are covered in this post. )

Want to keep it simple? Just purchase each frame or wheelset on the list as soon as you level up. Don’t have enough Drops? Keep riding – you’ll get them soon enough! (And you might want to ride near a RoboPacer so your Drops add up more quickly!)

Fastest Frames

* The Felt AR (level 23), Cervelo S5 2020 (level 36), Specialized Venge S-Works (level 37), and Uranium Nuclear (level 31) all turn in matching times in our flat tests.

Fastest Wheelsets

*The Zipp 858 wheels are the fastest non-disc aero wheelset, making them the fastest legal wheelset for some top-end Zwift ESports races where disc wheels are not allowed.

Total time savings of fastest frame and wheelset over stock Zwift setup (Zwift Steel frame and Zwift Classic wheels): 22.5+66=88.5 seconds

Times above based on our flat speed tests, done with a solo 75kg rider at 300 watts over two laps of Watopia’s very flat Tempus Fugit route. Our test rider completes the route in approximately 50 minutes.

What About the Tron Bike?

The Zwift Concept Z1 (Tron) bike is 78 seconds faster than the stock Zwift Steel+Classic wheels setup. The fastest setup available turns in a time ~9 seconds faster than the Tron bike over our ~50-minute flat test course.

That’s a decent gap, but you can also look at it like this: until you have a disc wheelset (level 37+) or one of the faster non-disc wheelsets (level 31+), the Tron bike is your fastest option on flat/rolling routes!

We didn’t include the Tron in the chart above since you can’t separate the Tron’s frame from its wheels. But it’s certainly a bike worth unlocking. Here’s how to do that >

Improvement by Level

The biggest performance gains come early in a Zwifter’s level progression. Here’s how much time you would be saving at each level if you upgraded to the recommended setups above:

You can see that purchasing the fastest frame and wheelset at level 10 delivers 57% of the overall possible improvement. And once you’ve hit level 39, the only way you’ll get faster is by racing smarter and training stronger!

Bike Sizing Guide: What Size Trek Bike Do I Need?

Are you looking for a bike to buy and asking yourself “what size Trek bike do I need?”

Trek bike sizing is very straightforward and varies by type.

For example, mountain bikes follow a unique method called alpha sizing that uses designations such as small, medium, or large. Using this system, a 5’3” to 5’7” tall person can use a 17.5” frame size.

On the other hand, Trek road bike sizing takes into account the inseam length.

Trek bikes are comfortable and easy to ride, making them excellent for beginners. They also come in different dimensions, so you should find one that fits you perfectly.

Whether in inches or cm, our Trek bike size chart will help you match your height with the appropriate vehicle.

Unlike other brands, Trek bikes have upgraded their MTB sizing with alpha classifications to remove guesswork for customers.

You may find that your chosen model has some and not all of the sizes in this Trek MTB size chart. In that case, branch out and look for XS and XXL options if the Trek M/L frame size doesn’t fit you.

Note that the women’s bike size chart also uses the alpha sizing guide for their line of women’s mountain bikes though the height requirement is slightly different for each size.

Did You Know

The Trek Marlin 5, which is a popular trail mountain bike, uses the alpha sizing chart, but its size is not limited to XS – XXL only! Trek also offers an XXS with 26” wheels for this MTB type.

Trek has given us 4 categories when it comes to road bicycles. These include:

Designed to be a mixture of road and mountain bikes, Trek hybrid bicycles are best used for casual rides and commutes.

What size bike should I get? What does “size” really mean? And what is the best way to find the correct model for yourself?

There are usually FOUR different aspects that you must consider and have a good idea about.

Riding Style

Do you want to ride your bike for fun or use it for racing and exhibition? Regardless of your budget, it is important that you consider the type of biking you want to do. Some people prefer to ride in the city, while others prefer to cycle off-road.

Trek bikes come in various sizes depending on the vehicle’s discipline, since some frames have different geometry to provide the support their riders need.

Rider Height

Most bicycle models come in different sizes for different body types so that they fit most people well.

The height of a person, when measured from head to toe, can help determine the bike size that would match them. This is because taller people have longer upper and lower extremities compared to shorter people, which means they will need different sizes of bikes in order to ride comfortably.

Inseam Length

After careful deliberation with the above two factors, the frame size is then ultimately determined by your inseams or the distance from your crotch to the bottom of your leg.

You should take this into consideration because it will determine how much room there is between your feet and handlebars when sitting on the saddle comfortably.

Practical Use /Test Ride

Last but not least, once you have chosen your bicycle size and Trek model, test out the bike with at least a short ride. This will let you assess the balance and comfort of the chosen vehicle.

Whether you ride recreationally or professionally, you cannot choose blindly. First, bikes are expensive, and second, you must buy the correct product to use it for a long time.

5 reasons to visit Staritsa, one of the oldest towns in Tver Region

Staritsa is shrouded in legends. According to one of them, the town near the mouth of the Staritsa (or Starchonka, how it was originally called) River was completely destroyed by the Tatar Mongols at the end of the 13th century, with only one old woman remaining alive. She took refuge in one of the white stone caves, for which the town is so famous. And as ‘old woman’ is translated as 'staritsa' in old Russian, allegedly this is why the town is called this way (and not because of the nearby Starchonka River).

That’s why it is worth visiting.

1. Find out how the old white-stone Russia was born

These days, the quarried local white stone goes to Moscow for the restoration of the Kremlin and the Tsaritsyno Palace, as well for the Assumption Cathedral in the city of Yaroslavl. But, before this, people always lined up for Staritsa white stone and took it across the whole of Russia — to the cities of Moscow, Tver, Smolensk, St. Petersburg, Arkhangelsk and others. It was especially convenient to float the stone down the Volga River (as Staritsa River is Volga’s tributary), before it became shallow in these places.

Since its foundation in 1297, the town was famous for its amazingly white limestone, which was nicknamed ‘Staritsa marble’. Whole local families were involved with the limestone extraction. It was quarried in layers, rolled out on logs and taken to the river by sleighs in winter. In spring, the 'precious' stone was shipped in hundreds of barges.

During World War II, partisans and locals took refuge in the unique mulit-kilometer-long catacomb caves, along with their livestock and supplies. Later, the quarries were blown up, but, even now, you can find a guide who will take you on an excursion through the preserved part of the dungeon. The ‘Seltsovskaya’ quarry, complete with bats, is suitable for beginner adventure seekers, while the ‘Barsuchya’ quarry, with its low ceilings is for advanced ones.

2. Enjoy the picturesque views & the local sights

One of the most picturesque ancient settlements in Russia and the highest point of the city is the Staritsa's Gorodishche', a historical center of the city built on ramparts of the Volga River's left bank. There is also an observation deck, which offers stunning views of the entire Dormition Monastery, the Volga River and its 'Staritsky Gate'. This is probably the most beautiful section of the river, where the Volga makes its way through the high banks.

Despite the limestone deposits, the embankments of Staritsa have always been reinforced with wood, but, to this day, on one side they are protected from landslides by white stone forges. They were built at the end of the 18th century right at the foot of the ramparts.

Along with limestone extraction, Staritsa was famous for its blacksmiths: every year, they produced up to 25,000 sickles for the whole country. Out of 50 forges, seven have survived to our day. And they look fabulous: sunk into the ground, each of them is decorated with an arch with merlons, where you can see the date of construction: “1798”.

The forges are planned to be restored for local manufacturers and a modern space is to be created there. The whole town is also being actively revived and restored - in five years, it will be unrecognizable. For instance, a picturesque embankment has already been built along the entire Staritsa River.

On the embankment, the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, which is more than 200 years old, is under restoration right now. In the 1930s, a bakery was set up in the church: the Soviets dismantled all the aisles, built ceilings and made three floors. The interior decoration was completely destroyed.

Now, you can climb the bell tower of the church and listen to the bell ringing right there, looking at the entire Staritsa. You can also see miraculously preserved fragments of frescoes on the walls and even order a brick with your name to be laid in the masonry. And, thus, donate to restore the church.

All the icons there share the same style and are covered in simple foil frames. These very unusual 19th-century coverings are from the Borisovka settlement in Belgorod Province. There is also a curious double icon featuring two Christs: Christ in full height next to the Mother of God, who is holding little Jesus in her arms.

3. Discover the ancient monastery where the first holy Patriarch of all Rus’ lived

The town of Staritsa developed around the Staritsa Dormition Monastery. According to legend, a wooden church on the right bank of the Volga River above the mouth of the Staritsa River was built by two monks from the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra back in the year 1110. And, in 1297, Tver prince Mikhail Yaroslavovich built a fortress there.

Surrounded by a white-stone wall, the Staritsa monastery was revived several times over its long history. Firstly, it was razed to the ground during the feuds of the 14th century; then, in the 18th century, the land was taken away from the monastery under the secularization manifesto of Catherine the Great; finally, in 1919, under the Soviets, the wall was dismantled for other construction works and the buildings were mothballed.

In the 2010s, the monastery was restored to its original appearance. The restoration was carried out by the Foundation for the Revival of the Holy Dormition Monastery, which was established by Viktor Khristenko. They say that after the restoration, the monks witness a miracle at night: the face of Christ under the dome is illuminated by a ray of light.  

The Dormition Monastery is famous for the fact that, in the second half of the 16th century, it was ruled by Archimandrite Job, who later became the first Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and one of the three patriarchs canonized. During the ‘Time of Troubles’, Job refused to recognize False Dmitry I - he was exiled to his native Dormition Monastery and died there.

Forty-five years later, Job’s relics were solemnly transferred to the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, but the tomb remained in Staritsa. Even in Soviet times, students visited it (secretly) with a textbook before exams. They believed that if you sprinkled sand from the tombstone on the page that you had managed to memorize, then it would be the one that you get in the exam. And although the tombstone has been fenced off, schoolchildren still come here before taking their graduation exam.

4. Get to know Pushkin even better

“Pushkin’s Tver office” is what literary scholars dub Staritsa and the surrounding area. This city is included in the so-called ‘Pushkin Ring of the Upper Volga Region’. The poet visited Tver Province more than twenty times to see his friends, the Wulfs, who had property there. For example, at the Osipova-Wulf Estate in Malinniki, he wrote the seventh chapter of 'Eugene Onegin' and completed the poem 'Anchar'.

Pushkin also often visited the Wulff estate in the village of Bernovo, where a museum in his honor now operates. Every year, they organize a big festival to celebrate the poet's birthday. The cozy, hilly park around the estate attracts people from all the surrounding areas.

On his way to monastery, Pushkin visited Staritsa and ordered canes from the white stone forges, bought wine for dinner and joined the balls in merchant Filippov’s house. By the way, the balls of Pushkin era are still held there today.

In honor of Pushkin's 225th birthday, a monument to the poet was unveiled in Staritsa's renovated park next to the Dormition Monastery. Now, it is the tallest Pushkin's monument in the entire Tver Region. The locals are proud: "In Boldino, Pushkin lived because of quarantine, in Mikhailovsky he was in exile, but, in Tver Province, he came for love," they say proudly.

By the way, now until the golden fall, which the poet loved so much, a tourist can see ancient Staritsa through his eyes - you just need to join the performance-walk ‘We are all Pushkin’ by ‘Excursion Bureau № 1’. It is easy to get to know the town on your own with the free audio guide ‘Pushkin Staritsa’ , recorded by the voice of Georgy Marchenko, who plays Pushkin in an immersive performance.

5. Eat Pushkin's pie, pick strawberries & stay at a cheese farm

Staritsa’s culinary calling card is Wulf's apple puffs. According to legend, Pushkin fell in love with them when he tasted them once at another Wulff estate - Pavlovskoye. It is said that, thanks to these puffs, the poet signed his letters to his beloved woman, Anna Kern, as "All Yours, Apple Pie".

Allegedly, the recipe was brought from Germany by Pavel Wulf's wife. The delicate creamy and not too sweet puff, in which the apple is not immediately recognizable, became a local attraction. Then the recipe was lost and only restored in our time. Not only tourists hunt for puff pastries, but also the locals. Therefore, it might not be possible to find the pastry, which has become one of the culinary brands of the Tver region, so readily!

Another local edible attraction are the strawberries in the neighboring village of Grigorevo. You can come to the family's berry eco-farm to pick sweet strawberries yourself .

And if you're tired of sweet things, there is a peasant farmstead not far from Staritsa, where the Yastrebov brothers make delicious cheese . There, you can stay in a village house with a stove and a bathhouse, walk in the fields where cows, goats and horses graze and learn how cheese is made. In the morning, you will be fed with homemade casseroles and fresh milk!
