Queen Victoria Itineraries

Queen victoria review, review of queen victoria.

The 2007-built MS Queen Victoria cruise ship is of the same design as MS Queen Elizabeth (2010) and has as fleetmates the Cunard liners RMS Queen Mary 2 (2004) and the fleet's newest boat (2024-built) Queen Anne .

The vessel (IMO number 9320556) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310624000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Cunard Line is a British-American cruise brand, operated by Carnival UK and owned by Carnival Corporation (shipowner). Cunard is headquartered in Southampton (England UK) and is among the world's oldest passenger shipping companies . In 2015, Cunard Line celebrated its 175th anniversary.

MS Queen Victoria cruise ship (Cunard)

The 2074-passenger ship Queen Victoria joined Cunard's fleet in December 2007. The vessel is of the same design as Vista-class Carnival ships but is slightly longer. It is the smallest Cunard ship. Vessel's construction started on May 12, 2006, and was launched on January 15, 2007 (float-out).

Onboard facilities include 7 restaurants and 13 bars, ballroom, show theatre, 3 swimming pools. The bow has heavier steel plating to be able to do Transatlantic crossings. Queen Elizabeth has almost the same design as the fleet-mate Queen Victoria (Vista-class modified) - though QM2 cost about USD 300,000 per berth. What distinguishes both Cunard liners is the more angled stern, compared to the vertical QE. Victoria also lacks covered games deck (present on Elizabeth).

During ship's 2017 drydock refurbishment (May 5 - June 4, done by Fincantieri in Palermo Sicily Italy ), ship's passenger capacity was increased (from 2410 to 2489) by adding a whole new aft deck section to the vessel. Read more in the "wiki" section below.

Decks and Cabins

Cunard Queen Victoria staterooms (1037 total) include 126 Suites, 591 Balcony, 147 Oceanview and 138 Inside cabins, in all 9 types and 34 categories. The ship has 20 wheelchair-accessible and 9 studios (single-occupancy cabins). The largest are the Grand Suites (2130 ft2 / 198 m2 plus 970 ft2 / 90 m2 terrace).

Cabin types include Queens Grill, Princess Grill, Britannia, Suites (Grand, Master, Penthouse, Queens, Princess), Standard Balcony staterooms, Outside and Interior (no-windows). Most cabins (Britannia Balcony) are sized 190-420 ft2 / 18-39 m2, with cabin balconies sized 70 ft2 / 7 m2.

The boat has 12 decks (all passenger-accessible) of which 7 are with cabins. Of all staterooms, 86% are outside, with 71% of them with step-out balconies.

The public rooms are located on lower-level decks- Decks 2 and 3. Unlike Queen Mary 2, no central circulation access can be seen on Queen Victoria- the main corridors are on the port side. The ship has a similar staircase to the grand lobby as on Queen Mary. Deck 1 (the lowest passenger deck), holds the lowest levels of the 3-storrey Lobby and Royal Court Theatre. The mid-level of Royal Court Theatre, Golden Lion Pub, casino (fairly large, no smoking), Queen’s Room, Chart Room bar (adjacent to Britannia Restaurant, excellent for a quiet drink before dinner), Todd English restaurant and lower levels of the Britannia Restaurant and the library, are on Deck 2. On Deck 3 are the top levels of the Royal Court Theatre, Midships Lounge, Royal Arcade and the upper level of the library. Decks above contain passenger cabins. The Health Club and spa, Lido Restaurant, Winter Garden lounge and two outdoor pools are on Deck 9. The Commodore Club (a large observation lounge, with ocean views and late-night room for interactive entertainment), Hemispheres nightclub and Churchill Lounge (which is for smokers) are on Deck 10. The Princess and Queen’s Grill with their lounge and open courtyard, are on Deck 11.

Theoretically, MS Queen Victoria is a classless ship, but passengers are actually separated (like on all Cunard liners) as their onboard dining locations are according to their cabin's category/cruise fares paid. Britannia Restaurant is for regular cabins, Princess Grill - for junior suites, and the Queen’s Grill is for deluxe suites. All the other public rooms are free to be used by all passengers. The so-called Grill Passengers (dining in Queen’s and Princess Grill) have two private areas on Decks 10 and 11- Grills Terraces.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Three main dining venues are available on QV. Passengers who occupy the most expensive cabins (grades Q1 to Q7) are allowed to dine at Queens Grill. The other luxurious accommodations (grades P1 to P4) are assigned to Princess Grill. For those who booked from inside staterooms to cabins with balconies, the dining space is Britannia Grill. It is a traditional ship restaurant which along with the Grills is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner. Britannia is set-seating for dinner (from 6,00p.m. to 8,30p.m.) and open-seating for lunch and breakfast. It is Cunard’s tradition, passengers who dine at the Grills have assigned tables for dinner, lunch, breakfast and can also dine during restaurants’ opening hours at any time.

MS Queen Victoria cruise ship (Cunard)

Britannia Restaurant, located in the stern of Queen Victoria, has windows on the lower level which offer a nice sea view, on the upper level you will see the promenade deck. A good choice of options is available for each meal (for dinner in particular). The spa menu has a lighter option for each meal. The alternative restaurant as on Queen Mary 2, is Todd English. Lunch involves a cover charge of $20 per person and is served from midday until 2,00p.m. The dinner service fee is $30, available from 6,00p.m. until 9,30p.m. Book a table in advance- it is worth every cent. Food is great, service- attentive. The Lido is ship’s buffet area (but the least successful dining venue). With its perfect panoramic views, it offers 450 indoor and outdoor seating and standard self-serve buffet. Dinner is served there for passengers who need a casual alternative to the main dining (from 6,00p.m. to 11,00p.m. with waiter service). Available snack service through wee hours. In-cabin food service on QV is available 24 hours a day at no extra charge. The menu depends on whether you travel in Britannia (with limited number choices) or Grill accommodations. Continental breakfast could also be served to your cabin with a good choice of options. The pride of Cunard Line is the Afternoon Tea - a ceremony, performed from 3 pm until 4:30 pm every day in Grills Lounge and Queens Room. Waiters with white gloves serve tea from a big table in the center of the room, then serve scones with jam and sandwiches.

A variety of delicious dishes from fine ingredients is the reason why Cunard cuisine is respected. In the Queens Grill, you may enjoy intimate dining and choose between 142-seats if you are among the passengers in suites and top accommodation grades, or Princess Grill with 132 seats if you are in middle-class accommodation grades. Traditional pub food is served in the Golden Lion Pub. Another alternative dining spot is the Todd English Restaurant, with its classic English dining salon and Mediterranean cuisine served.

When you book you may request a sitting. The Britannia restaurant has two for dinner - at 6 p.m. and at 8.30 p.m. Princess Grill and Queens Grill do not have sittings - when they are open, you can dine any time you choose. A note for confirmation sitting and table number will be left in your stateroom when you board. Lunch and breakfast do not require allocated tables or sittings.

During the day, passengers definitely tend towards country club casual dress code. At night, even when it isn't a formal-designated evening, people dress anyway. There are three dress codes in the main restaurants after 6 p.m. each evening - which one applies each night you will be told in pre-voyage documentation and daily program in your stateroom: Formal (men - dinner jacket with a black tie or dark business suit; women- evening dress); Semi-formal (men- jacket and a tie; women - cocktail dress/trouser suit); Elegant casual (men - a jacket, tie is optional; women - skirt, dress or trousers). Shorts and T-shirts or shorts are not permitted!

Follows the complete list of Queen Victoria restaurants and food bars.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Queen Victoria is a true Cunarder, flauntingly upholding their famous inheritance and traditions. With gorgeous marbles, woods, plush carpets, rich fabrics, and soft furniture, this cruise liner merely exudes elegance. The vessel's many diversions and distractions assure you are as thoroughly entertained and completely relaxed as you could wish to be, with all the majestic, stupendous magnificence people could imagine from a luxurious Cunard ocean liner, combined with an airy, modern atmosphere. As cruisers embark, they find the dramatic 3-tier Grand Lobby, with its superb staircase and eye-catching artwork that offer an exclusive taste of life.

MS Queen Victoria cruise ship (Cunard)

The principal venues for onboard entertainment are the Queens Room and the Royal Court Theatre. The Royal Court Theatre, which is three-deck-high, is in traditional style with red velvet and has the design of a classic opera house. It is the venue for lectures, concerts and large-screen movies, too. The featured twenty private boxes can be booked for shows at $50 per couple. This includes champagne and finger sandwiches and bubbly in the box. Maybe the most beautiful public room on board QV is the Queens Room on Deck 2- the setting for cocktails, balls, concerts, dance classes, and afternoon tea. Cafe Carinthia, the Veuve Cliquot Champagne Bar and the Chart Room Bar, all on the starboard side of Deck 2, attract passengers with warm, brown and yellow colors. Just aft of the theatre is located a bar. Commodore Club observation lounge is situated on Deck 10 with huge wall-to-ceiling windows. Next door is the small Churchill’s Cigar Lounge for smoke and drink with friends. The Hemispheres night club on Deck 10 is best for those who want to go on the ballroom dancing when finished in Queens Room. Passengers may attend Cunard Book Club literary discussions which are led by the librarian. On selected voyages on board come members of Royal Astronomical Society to teach about space and lead star-gazing nights. QV offers computer learning programs in the Apple Learning Centre. Courses in Apple iStudy on iMac computers teach basic computer skills, movie making, photo editing, new technology as Facebook and iPads.

Live jazz is played in some of the lounges and bars. There are also bands and solo entertainers onboard. In the Queens Room, Big Band nights are held. A glass-roof Winter Garden lounge and two-story library with spiral staircase add to ship's beauty. The Library is two-deck-high with 6,000-book facility and two librarians. You could also buy maritime-related books from a separate bookshop, as well as maps and stationery. The Pavilion Pool is a high-volume disco and nightclub.

The Royal Spa and Fitness Centre of Cunard offers stunning ocean views, relaxation places, wonderfully appointed healing rooms and relaxing therapies, as well as a scenic glass-encased Fitness Centre. The Royal Health Club and Spa includes a beauty salon, a gymnasium with ocean view and aerobics area, Thermal Area- steam rooms and sauna, body treatment rooms, relaxation area, rasul chamber for Hammam-style steam and mud bathing.

Queen Victoria is not a ship that specially caters to families with children. But if you decide to take your children, they must be at least two years old for the itineraries of 2012, to be able to participate in nursery programs without your supervision. On Deck 10 you can find children’s playroom with lots of toys, and The Zone, which is specially designed for teenagers with computer games. Both rooms feature enough outdoor deck space.

Cunard cruise ship weddings, ceremonies, and onboard parties could be held in some of the QV's lounges. There is no onboard chapel on the QV ship.

Follows the complete list of Queen Victoria lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens, and adults.

Queen Victoria Wiki

Queen Victoria is Cunard Line's 2nd new liner by year built, with its "Cunard Queens" sisterships Queen Elizabeth and RMS Queen Mary 2 . By the Spirit-Class design, the Cunard Victoria ship is similar to the liners Arcadia (P&O UK), Princess' Coral and Island , and Costa's Luminosa and Deliziosa . Carnival Corporation ordered this vessel for Holland America Line , but before the construction was completed it was re-assigned to Cunard Line.

This Cunard liner was named after Queen Victoria (1819-1901, the Empress of India). The ship's godmother is Camilla Parker (Duchess of Cornwall). Fun fact about the naming ceremony is that the champagne bottle thrown at the hull didn't break, which is generally considered a very bad omen. However, another bottle was thrown just seconds later and the second time everything was successful. Fortunately, no serious accidents have been reported on the cruise ship, so far. The maiden voyage was along Northern Europe (10-day itinerary December 11-21).

Unlike traditional Cunard liners, Queen Victoria is not an ocean liner (based on propulsion system and hull design). The vessel has a reinforced bow and higher freeboard to handle North Atlantic Ocean's weather extremes. The ship has the very first true theatre at sea (with private boxes) and the largest ballroom (Queen Victoria At Sea).

On December 15, 2010, Cunard's first female captain - Inger Olsen (born on Faroe islands) - took command of the cruise ship. In October 2011, the vessel changed its registry/flagstate  from the UK to Bermuda, which allows cruise wedding ceremonies to be held on the ship. The word "Southampton" on the stern was replaced with "Hamilton".

Operated each year and starting in January, Queen Victoria World Cruise deals are among the industry's most anticipated. Compared to other companies, Cunard's world voyages offer affordable prices and visit popular destinations and big seaport cities around the world.

Prices started from GBP 14000 / ~USD 18200 / ~EUR 15400 per person (Britannia Inside stateroom at double occupancy).

MS Queen Victoria refurbishments review

Queen Victoria's drydocking in 2022 (May 2-19) was at Harland & Wolff shipyard (in Belfast, Northern Ireland ). In 2023, the vessel was drydocked (at Navantia Cadiz) for general maintenance.

During drydock refurbishment 2017 (May 5 through June 4, done by Fincantieri in Palermo Sicily Italy ) were installed additional 43x Britannia Club staterooms, as well as single-occupancy cabins. According to Cunard Line, the decision was based on passenger demand.

  • A total of 18 balcony cabins plus 15 inside cabins were added on decks 6, 7, 8, 9. The new interior staterooms were added in the aft deck sections of decks 5, 6, 7, 8.
  • 5 new Penthouse Suites were also added.
  • The total number of staterooms was increased from 1004 to 1037,
  • These deck plan changes also reflected on the ship's max passenger capacity, which was increased from 2410 to 2489.
  • Refits and enhancements were also done to several of the ship's most popular public spaces (including Lido Sun Deck, Winter Garden, Britannia Club Restaurant). All staterooms were upgraded with large flat TVs plus tea-coffee making facilities.

The 2017 refurbishment cost Cunard ~GBP 30 million (USD 40M). The increased passenger capacity was accomplished by adding to the ship a whole new aft deck section.

The boat's drydock in 2015 (December 2014 - January 2015) resulted in no major deckplan changes, excepting the new single cabins added on deck 2. The drydocking was at Bohm+Voss Shipyard ( Hamburg Germany ) and included mainly maintenance works on the hull and propulsion (Azipods bearings changing). Drydock works were done by almost 2000 people working on the ship (~600,000 man-hours). The refit (as upgrades and renovations) featured:

  • a total of 9 single cabins (8 Oceanview, 1 Interior) were added on deck 2 (portside) taking some space from the casino.
  • over 20,000 m2 of new carpeting (in all public spaces) along with updating the wall paneling
  • 3100 new mattresses (in all cruise cabins and suites) along with new sheets and towels
  • tea/coffee pantries were installed at the Britannia dining room
  • floor renovation in the ballroom Queen's Room
  • More awnings were added on Lido Deck 9 (around the pools), increasing the shaded seating/relaxation areas.

Ship review: Cunard’s Queen Victoria

cunard cruises queen victoria

When I graduated from university in 2007, I had a temporary contract working for a company called Ocean Books. The company set up and maintain libraries on many of the world’s best-known cruise ships. Back in 2007, this included the soon-to-be-launched Queen Victoria (QV). I remember the excitement surrounding this exciting new addition to the Cunard fleet, at a time when the QE2 was still the most famous working ocean liner in the world. So I was very excited when I went to have a look around this sparkling new vessel, before she set sail on her maiden voyage.

QV at Ocean Terminal

Fast forward to 2017 – almost exactly a decade later – and the ship still looks as impressive as she did back then. With a gross tonnage of just over 90,000, Queen Victoria carries 2061 guests and 981 crew. My husband and I went on board for the day just before Christmas to meet our friend Tomislav Bozic, Queen Victoria’s deputy captain at the time. Although my husband has worked on board before, Tom kindly gave us a guided tour around the ship as I haven’t cruised on her before. On the day of our visit, there was a choir singing carols in the atrium. It’s taken me a while to get around to writing my review, hence all of the festive photos!

cunard cruises queen victoria

Queen Victoria had a £21.6 million refurbishment over the course of 30 days, in spring 2017. A number of changes were made, including the addition of 43 new staterooms. The staterooms were built in a block then swung into position by cranes. Their arrival created extra space on the aft pool deck, which has also been refurbished. Other changes include the addition of the Britannia Club restaurant which replaced the Chart Room, which has relocated to the Grand Lobby area.

Grand Lobby (Atrium)

Choir in the Grand Lobby

With its sweeping staircase, polished marble floor and ornate balconies, Queen Victoria’s Grand Lobby is a masterpiece. Its focal point is a three-tier bronze sculpture of the ship, laid on top of an image of a globe, with the sun beating down from the sky above. There are a number of key services located in the Grand Lobby, including the Pursers Office and the Tour Office. The two-tier library opens onto the Grand Lobby. Unfortunately my photos came out very dark, but the interior features lots of wood panelling, a stunning panelled dome ceiling and an ornate spiral staircase.

Grand Lobby

Royal Arcade/Queens Arcade

If you like to shop, then you won’t be disappointed with Queen Victoria’s retail offering. From designer goods and jewellery to everyday essentials, the 4000 square foot Royal Arcade has plenty of variety.

Queens Arcade

At its forward end, a grand staircase connects the upper and lower tiers. The custom-built pillar clock and old-fashioned street light are reminiscent of times gone by. I loved the dark green décor, marble pillars and well-lit shop frontage. During out visit, Christmas decorations were on display on the arcade’s lower level.

Royal Arcade

Tom very kindly let us have a look around the bridge. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit the bridge on most of the ships I have sailed on, but it’s always interesting to see how they differ. We bumped into Craig, a deck officer we sailed with on Azura a couple of years ago. I’m always slightly in awe of my husband when it comes to ‘parking’ a ship. I always like hearing him relate his manouvering experiences to me at the end of a port day. Here are a few photos from our bridge visit.

cunard cruises queen victoria

Queen Victoria boasts 2 swimming pools, a hydro-pool and numerous Jacuzzis. As part of her refit, the Lido Pool on deck 9 had a makeover which included a pool refresh, new seating areas and improvements to the teak deck. The pool area is perfect for al-fresco dining, as it is located close to the Lido buffet. The seating is comfortable and plentiful, with poolside cabanas and sunbeds. There are also sails that provide shade in the heat of the sun.

Pavilion Pool

The Pavilion Pool is centrally located on deck 9 and is flanked by the Winter Garden and the spa and fitness centre. I can imagine this is a lovely place to relax with a cocktail during the day and I liked the fact there were shaded areas on deck.

Bars and Lounges

Midships Lounge

Whether you want to relax with a speciality cocktail or sample a pint in the pub, there are numerous bars on board Queen Victoria. Guests can enjoy a coffee and handmade chocolates in the newly relocated Chart Room, a nautical themed bar and lounge. Unique features include nautical themed cocktails, a Godiva chocolate discovery table and snacks throughout the day. Its central location off the Grand Lobby makes it a hive of activity and I imagine it’s a great place to read a book on a sea day. Close by, the Midships Lounge serves 40 different types of gin, along with a selection of champagne and prosecco tipples.

The Winter Garden

The Winter Garden overlooks the Pavilion Pool and this was one of my favourite bars on board. I loved the feeling of openness created by the vibrant blue, orange and green colour scheme and the natural light that floods in via the retractable glass roof. The addition of a tree and plants brings a sense of the outdoors inside, when the weather is bad. On sunny days the roof retracts, along with a moveable glass wall, allowing easy access to the pool area. There is plenty of seating and the relaxed dress code makes for an informal experience.

The Queens Room

I remember having afternoon tea in the QE2’s Queens Room back in 2008. White-gloved waiters served us delicate sandwiches and fresh scones served from silver platters. It was very different to my usual buffet afternoon tea. Queen Victoria’s Queens Room may be more modern than the QE2’s, but it’s as equally impressive. For me, this is Cunard’s hallmark and it’s always my favourite part of a Cunard ship. For those of you who have never heard of it, the Queens Room is a traditional two-tiered ballroom inspired by Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s home on the Isle of Wight. Two beautiful chandeliers dangle over a magnificent handcrafted wooden dance floor, and the room drips with gold furnishings. This room demands attention and its location close to the Grand Lobby and Royal Arcade make it impossible to ignore. This is a popular venue for dance classes and, of course, afternoon tea.

The Commodore Club

The Commodore Club is situated at the bow of the ship on deck 10. This wonderful piano bar reminds me of P&O’s beloved Crow’s Nest and there are many similarities between the two. Tasteful seating looks out onto magnificent windows affording spectacular panoramic views. Sadly our view that day was a cold, wet Southampton. The blue, gold and beige décor gives the bar a cosy feel, despite its size. The Commodore Club has its own signature cocktail menu and it often plays host to tasting classes.

Golden Lion Pub

English pubs are a common feature on Cunard ships and Queen Victoria is no different. The Golden Lion is the most authentic pub I have seen on a ship, since I sailed on the QE2. I loved the fact that it served traditional pub lunches daily and there’s also the option of afternoon tea with a beer flight!

The Yacht Club

The Yacht Club is small but perfectly formed. The comfortable lounge chairs are spread out and it doesn’t feel overcrowded. A piano stands to one side and in the evening this is a popular live music and dancing venue. An impressive chandelier and windows in the ceiling add to the refinement of this room.

Other bars and lounges include Hemispheres nightclub, Churchill’s Cigar Lounge, poolside bars and the Grills Lounge.

Royal Court Theatre

The Royal Court Theatre holds over 800 people and it’s three decks high. Guests can see one of two performances per night from either a guest entertainer or the ship’s theatre company. The plush red seating might be comfortable enough for most, but the 16 private boxes offer that something extra. The decor reminded me very much of a traditional West End theatre.

Royal Court Theatre

Restaurants

There are numerous dining options on board Queen Victoria, although where you eat depends on what type of stateroom you have booked. Guests in the top suites dine at the Queens Grill, an exclusive world-renowned dining venue. In its heyday, the Queens Grill on the QE2 was voted the best restaurant in the world. Guests in the next level of suites dine at the Princess Grill, a classic wood-panelled dining venue with no set dining time for dinner. I had a sneaky look inside the Queens Grill, but I didn’t take any photos as people were eating. The stunning floor-to-ceiling windows allow a wall of light to fall on the elegant restaurant, which features dark wood and gold furnishings throughout. Guests dining at the grills also have the option of booking an outdoor table at the outdoor Grills Courtyard. Other features include exclusive access to a lounge and terrace area.

cunard cruises queen victoria

We ate in the Lido which is Queen Victoria’s airy, open-plan buffet area. I was really impressed with the variety of food options on offer in the buffet area. As well as your standard hot and cold food counters, Queen Victoria had different areas where chefs would prepare food from scratch for you. This included a pasta bar and – although I didn’t see it – a sushi station.

The Lido

I really liked the newly opened Britannia Club restaurant, open to anyone staying in a Britannia Club stateroom. Guests have the option of ordering from the Britannia Restaurant menu or an a la carte alternative. It reminded me a little bit of the Epicurean restaurant on board P&O’s Britannia, and I loved the chic furnishing in muted blue, grey and beige. Britannia Club has replaced the original Chart Room, which now sits just off the Grand Lobby.

Britannia Restaurant

All guests can eat at the Britannia Restaurant, an impressive Art Deco inspired venue spanning two decks, linked by a sweeping staircase. At its heart stands an imposing but impressive centrepiece – a 10-foot tall globe, a nod to Cunard’s nautical history. The warm orange tones of the centrepiece tie in nicely with the rest of the décor.

Afternoon tea at the Golden Lion

There are a number of other venues that serve food during the day, including the Golden Lion pub, The Chart Room and the Queens Room (for afternoon tea). The Verandah is the main speciality restaurant, serving mouth-watering contemporary French cuisine. Al Fresco is another cover-charge option, where guests can enjoy cuisine from around the world served in a bistro-style environment.

The art gallery was added during refit

There are 1035 staterooms on board Queen Victoria. As well as the 43 new Britannia Club balcony additions, during refit each stateroom had fresh carpet/soft furnishings and new tea and coffee making facilities. Cunard used 26,574 square metres of carpet in the staterooms alone.

There are 5 different categories of suite and 6 types of stateroom to choose from. Cunard works on a class system, so where you eat depends on which suite or stateroom you book. Guests staying in the top suites ultimately eat in the best restaurant.

The majority of staterooms have a balcony, although it is possible to have an oceanview room without a balcony. There are nine single staterooms for solo travellers situated on deck 2.

Casino

In conclusion Queen Victoria has elegance and class, she is easy to navigate with a friendly atmosphere. Her high quality finish oozes luxury and she maintains a British feel, despite attracting an international audience. Back in 2007, her décor appeared dark and oppressive in places, but she felt completely different this time around. The interiors seemed lighter, which is testament to the work carried out during her previous refurbishments. Although Cunard is more formal than other cruise lines, the passengers who were on board during our visit were dressed casually and they came across as very relaxed. I will certainly be adding Queen Victoria to my cruise ship bucket list!

Queen Victoria FAQs

Is queen victoria a cruise ship or ocean liner.

The Queen Victoria is a cruise ship.

Are tips expected on Queen Victoria?

To ensure crew in these areas are rewarded for the service they provide to you, and to eliminate the need for tipping, a hotel and dining service charge is added to your on board account and every dollar collected goes directly to the crew members. There is no administrative fee. Of course, should you wish to individually reward any other crew member who has made your time on board particularly memorable, please feel welcome to do so.

Are there formal nights on Queen Victoria?

Gala Evenings are held at least once on every voyage of three nights or more, with the dress code always revealed in advance of sailing so you can pack accordingly.

What is the dress code on Queen Victoria?

Casual wear, shorts and T-shirts are perfectly acceptable, and we’d encourage you to bring swimwear so you can enjoy the pools, spa and whirlpools on your ship. Swimwear isn’t permitted in indoor dining areas, so if you are planning to visit your stateroom’s main restaurant for breakfast or lunch, be sure to factor in time for a quick change in your stateroom. Evenings on board a Cunard Queen exude a sense of occasion, but they’re also as relaxed as you want them to be. There’s no need to dress to the nines each night if you don’t want to, and you’ll find many areas on board where casual dress is welcome. At least twice on each seven-night voyage we’ll host a Gala Evening, where we do ask that you observe an elevated dress code. Again, it’s your choice whether to participate in these evenings or not.

When was Queen Victoria last refurbished?

The Queen Victoria was last refurbished in 2017.

How To Avoid Single Supplements

Book your solo cruise with aaa.

With plenty of ways to mingle with other passengers (or enjoy some quality alone time), going on a cruise alone is the perfect getaway for solo and single travelers .

However, you’ll need to do your research before booking since cruising solo can get expensive. Some cruise lines charge single supplements, which means you'll pay extra when traveling alone and staying in a room that's usually meant for two people.

Luckily, as solo cruising has become more popular, certain cruise lines have started to cater to the needs of guests traveling alone and even offer cabins specifically designed for solo cruisers.

Read on to discover the best cruise lines for solo travelers.

1. Holland America Cruise Line

cunard cruises queen victoria

Single cabins: Yes

Solo travel perks: Single Partners Program

AAA Member Benefit:

  • $50 onboard spending credit per person

AAA Vacations ® Benefit:

  • 50 Denali Dollars per person on Alaska cruises for Verandah staterooms and above

Known for having some of the best customer service in the industry, it should come as no surprise that Holland America Line is dedicated to providing an exceptional experience to solo travelers onboard their fleet of ships.

The line’s newest ships—Rotterdam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam—have 12 single staterooms perfect for solo travelers. Each of these rooms is approximately 127-172 square feet and equipped with full-size and modern amenities. Plus, every single cabin boasts an ocean view, so you can enjoy the scenery during your voyage.

Holland America Line also does a great job at creating an atmosphere of camaraderie on their ships. The Single Partners Program, offered on most voyages, puts on activities, cocktail parties and mixers for singles and solo travelers to mingle during the cruise. Whether you enjoy exercise classes, wine tastings or trivia, you’re sure to meet other travelers with similar interests through this program.

2. Silversea Cruise Line

cunard cruises queen victoria

Solo travel perks : Low single supplements

Smaller cruise lines are great for solo travelers since you’ll see familiar faces throughout your journey, which can make it easier to strike up conversations and form connections with fellow travelers.

One of the best small cruise lines for solo travelers is Silversea Cruise Line. While they don’t offer single cabins, they have extremely low single supplements of just 25 percent on certain voyages. For reference, most cruise lines have single supplements that are 50 percent to 100 percent of the fare, so Silversea’s rate is very affordable in comparison.

At the beginning of your voyage, there will be a champagne Welcome Reception which serves as the perfect opportunity to mingle with other solo travelers. During certain journeys, Gentlemen Hosts will be available aboard to welcome solo guests.

3. Royal Caribbean

The accommodations feature private verandas or ocean-view windows as well as many amenities to keep you comfortable during your voyage.

9. Celebrity Cruises

cunard cruises queen victoria

Solo travel perks : Hosted social events

  • Onboard credit based on the stateroom category booked

Celebrity Cruises is another popular cruise line for solo travelers, offering social events to help solo cruisers make new friends. Known for its inclusivity, Celebrity Cruises is also one of the most LGBTQ-friendly cruise lines in the industry. Their itineraries, such as their Bali, Malaysia and Thailand itineraries, are some of the best cruises for solo travelers looking for excitement and adventure.

Celebrity’s solo cruise cabins are available on the Celebrity Edge®, Celebrity Apex®, Celebrity Beyond℠ and Celebrity Ascent℠ ships. Solo travelers can choose between an ocean-view room with a veranda and an inside stateroom. All of the solo rooms come with the same products and services as the regular staterooms.

The easiest way to avoid single supplements is to opt for a cruise line that offers solo cabins. However, if your heart is set on a cruise line or ship that doesn’t have this perk, consider looking out for specials that waive or discount single supplements. Cunard Growing Cruise Capacity by 40% in 2024

  • May 29, 2024

Queen Anne

According to the 2024 Cruise Industry News Annual Report , Cunard Line is increasing capacity by almost 40 percent in 2024.

With the new Queen Anne debuting, the upscale brand is adding supply to virtually all of its core destinations and markets.

After entering service in early May , the 3,000-guest newbuild is now offering sailings from Cunard’s homeport in Southampton.

The program includes four- to 14-night itineraries to the British Islands, the Norwegian Fjords, the Canary Islands, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean and more.

With the Queen Anne taking over Cunard’s no-fly itineraries to regions like Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, the Queen Victoria repositioned to the Mediterranean for the summer.

The 2,000-passenger ship is more than doubling Cunard’s capacity in the region, offering a series of fly-cruises departing from Italy, Spain and Turkey.

Representing almost 20 percent of the company’s overall capacity, the traditional trans-Atlantic itineraries still hold an important part of Cunard’s business with the Queen Mary 2 set to offer these crossings in 2024.

With two vessels offering itineraries to the region, Cunard Line is growing capacity by some 150 percent in the Canary Islands.

Other destinations being visited by Cunard in 2024 include Alaska, where the Queen Elizabeth is set to offer a summer program.

Set to reposition to the Caribbean in late 2025, the 2010-built vessel is also offering a farewell season in Australia and New Zealand starting in October. The program includes itineraries departing from Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns and other ports.

In 2024, Cunard Line is also offering itineraries to the Asia/Pacific region, Canada & New England, the Caribbean and the West Coast.

The British company continues to offer its traditional around-the-world voyages, with two vessels sailing its global itineraries this year.

More than 100 passengers ill on Cunard cruise ship after sickness outbreak

More than 100 passengers on a cruise holiday gave fallen ill after an outbreak of sickness on a Cunard ship.

Of the 1,824 on board Queen Victoria, 116 have suffered some form of gastrointestinal illness, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – around 6 per cent all passengers .

Fifteen crew members have also been sick, with the main symptoms reported as diarrhoea and vomiting.

Queen Victoria, which has been in service since 2007, is currently sailing a 107-night world voyage, and departed from Southampton on 11 January. It is due to return to the UK port at the end of April.

The current leg of the voyage is a 16-night cruise between Florida ’s Port Everglades and San Francisco, California . The sailing departed on 22 January, and some passengers disembarking on 7 February.

The CDC reported that issues began on 22 January, and that currently no cause is known. The Vessel Sanitation Program is “remotely monitoring the situation”.

In response to the outbreak, the crew increased cleaning and disinfection procedures – according to the ship’s outbreak prevention and response plan – and isolated the ill passengers and crew.

A spokesperson for the cruise line told The Independent : “Cunard confirmed that a small number of guests had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness on board Queen Victoria.

“They immediately activated their enhanced health and safety protocols to ensure the wellbeing of all guests and crew on board.”

The incident comes just weeks after almost 100 passengers on a Celebrity Cruises ship, Celebrity Constellation, contracted norovirus after it departed from Florida on 3 January.

The health agency recorded 14 incidents of gastrointestinal illness in 2023 that breached its threshold for public notification, and it states that although people “often associate cruise ships with acute gastrointestinal illnesses”, such as norovirus, outbreaks are “relatively infrequent” on the vessels.
