The nineteenth in our list of the 20 affordable places to visit in Kenya is the Lord Egerton Castle. Found some 14 kilometers away from Nakuru town lies the magnificent Lord Egerton’s Castle . The castle was built in the year 1952. The story behind the construction of this castle is rather heartbreaking, a story of love and betrayal.

Lord Maurice Egerton was born in a royal family of Lords in the year 1874 and was the last born son of Alan De Tatton and Lady Anna Louisa Taylor. He had two siblings William and Cecil Egerton who later on died and left him as the sole heir to his family’s vast wealth.  He worked in the Royal Navy until the year 1920 when his father died, therefore succeeding him as the fourth baron of Egerton.

He loved photography and hunting and this prompted him to travel around the world. He came to Africa through Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).  He eventually entered Kenya and decided to fully settle here where he was convinced by Lord Egerton to settle down and pursue agriculture in the country.  He then bought 21,116 acres of land from Delamere.

As an offspring of the Royal lineage, he had to get married by someone of the same status as he is. He found himself a young lady whose lineage branched off from Queen Elizabeth, he built a four-roomed cottage hoping to impress her.

When he invited the lady to come to see the house, she was disgusted by the sight of the house and did not even spend two hours in the compound saying it was a ‘bird’s nest’ and this made Lord Egerton build a bigger and better house.

The construction materials were shipped from Italy and England.  He was able to build a magnificent four-storey and 52 room mansion. When the castle was finally completed he invited the lady once again to see the house but she turned it down saying it was no better than a “dog’s kennel” she left Lord Egerton and married a British Lord in Australia. This left Lord Egerton leading him to deeply despise women. Women were never allowed into the castle, all his workers were male.

The history of this castle makes it one of the most interesting places to visit in Kenya. You should come to visit this magnificent castle for only Ksh 150 for adults and Ksh 50-100 for children.

20. Fort Jesus

The twentieth in our list of the 20 affordable places to visit in Kenya is Fort Jesus. Fort Jesus is definitely one of the most historically significant places to visit in Kenya. The Portuguese built the fort by the designs of Joao Batista Cairato, who drew his inspiration from Pietro Cataneo, an Italian architect. The building material and labor came from the Swahili people who were the indigenous inhabitants of Mombasa.

The fort takes the shape of a man from above. In 1858, it became a national park and in the year 2011, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site marked as one of the most beautiful and brilliant structures from the 16 th century. The entry fee is only Ksh 200  for adults and Ksh 100 for children.

Are you looking for an out-of-this-world trip that won’t break the bank? Head to Kenya, one of the most beautiful countries in Africa! Kenya is a diverse destination for budget travelers, from its fantastic wildlife to its culture and breathtaking landscapes.

Not only is Kenya an affordable place to visit, but it’s also home to some of the world’s best safaris . Whether taking a game drive in the scenic Masai Mara or visiting the South Coast islands of Mombasa, you can experience one of the ultimate African adventures without breaking your bank balance.

However, there are specific tips and tricks to ensure you get the most out of your safari experience in Kenya while sticking to your budget. Read on as we share our top 10 tips for traveling on a budget in Kenya!

Accommodation Options on a Budget

If you want to experience the adventure of a lifetime in Kenya without breaking the bank, plenty of affordable accommodation options are available. From camping and glamping to budget hostels and homestays, you’ll be able to find something that fits your travel style without going over budget.

Here are some of the most popular budget lodging options in Kenya:

  • Camping: Camping is a great way to get close to nature while reducing costs. With campsites scattered throughout Kenya’s national parks, you can find a spot within your budget that meets your needs.
  • Glamping: Not feeling quite up for the camping vibes? Glamping—or glamorous camping—is a great alternative. Up your camping game by staying in a yurt or teepee with all the comforts of glamping, including electricity, running water and other amenities.
  • Hostels: Budget hostels in Kenya offer basic accommodations at an even more basic price. Expect shared rooms, free Wi-Fi, and onsite cafes for your convenience!
  • Home Stays: Homestays are another affordable lodging option in Kenya. Many homestays provide meals as part of their services, so you don’t have to worry about cooking while traveling.

Transportation around Kenya – Taking Local Flights, Busses &More

What’s the cheapest way to get around Kenya? Good question! Many transportation options exist, from airports and railways to buses and bikes. Depending on your budget and travel plans, you can opt for domestic flights, express busses, or even the good ol’ trains.

The cheapest option for getting around Kenya is generally by bus. Hundreds of Government-run express busses make regular stops in towns and cities, so you can quickly get on and off as needed. Traveling with a Kenyan-based operator can often save money on fares from international airlines.

If you’re looking for a more comfortable journey while still keeping costs reasonably low, an air safari is another great option. You don’t have to worry about getting lost in translation—small planes will fly you directly to your destination with the help of an expert local pilot.

One final option worth considering is car rental or carpooling. A few major rental companies operate in both cities and rural areas in Kenya, so if there’s a specific destination you want to reach but don’t want to take public transport, then renting a car might be the most convenient option. Carpooling is also becoming increasingly popular as young Kenyans have taken to sharing rides via social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. So why not sit back and enjoy the scenery with some local company?

Exploring the Masai Mara on a Budget

In Kenya, a safari is one of the most popular and remarkable activities people look forward to. The Masai Mara National Reserve is ideal for an unforgettable safari experience. Here are some tips on exploring the Masai Mara on a budget:

  • Opt for a shared tour with other travelers : Instead of private time, communicating with other travelers can reduce your costs significantly. You can find inexpensive tours such as our Masai mara safari and join the group with the lowest budget.
  • Look for mid-range hotels instead of luxury ones: Staying in mid-range hotels near or around the reserve can save you money while still offering excellent service and value.
  • Find an affordable transport option: You can get around quickly and cheaply in Kenya if you opt for buses and shared taxis over private ones.
  • Consider camping in reserve: For an even lower price, camping in the reserve is an excellent option as long as you’re comfortable sleeping under the stars!
  • Buy supplies before entering: Bring your snacks and drinks into the reserve to save money on food while you are there.
  • Ask your driver about lesser-known spots: Experienced safari guides will be keen to show you where animals come to feed, which could be more cost-effective than visiting more popular locations within the reserve!

Suggested Itineraries for Budget Travelers in Kenya

Do you want to make the most of your visit to Kenya without breaking the bank? With some planning, you can explore the best of what the country offers while still sticking to your budget. Here are some suggested itineraries for budget travelers in Kenya:

Safari Itinerary

If you plan to go on a safari, there are many ways to do it on a budget. Start by choosing a less expensive destination — Masai Mara is known for its rich wildlife, which can be more costly than other parks. You can also save money by staying at campgrounds instead of traditional lodges and going on self-drive safaris. And since safaris usually take three days or more, buying multiple nights upfront will usually get you a better rate.

Beach Itinerary

Diani Beach is an excellent option if you’re looking for some beach time on your trip. You can save money by staying in guesthouses instead of resorts. Public transport, such as matatus (minibusses) along the Kenyan Coast, is much cheaper than taxis or private drivers. Plus, there’s so much to do in Diani – swimming, snorkeling, and exploring local markets – that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Mountain Itinerary

For those who want to experience some high-altitude action in Kenya without emptying their wallet, Mt Kenya is an ideal stop. Start with an overnight stay at Nanyuki town before proceeding with transport provided by the Mountaineering Club of Kenya (MCK). You can also save money by bringing packed meals from home or buying food from local vendors outside MCK campsites.

Tips for Staying Safe in Kenya

When you travel to any foreign country, it pays to take some extra precautions. Kenya is undoubtedly no exception. Here are some tips to help you be safe during your stay:

Be smart about where you stay and who you hang out with. If possible, stick to reputable lodgings, and avoid known rougher neighborhoods. If you’re meeting up with friends of friends, research a bit before committing to visit.

Watch Out for Pickpockets

Pickpockets can be found in touristy areas and crowded spaces like markets or busses. Keep your valuables close, wear a money belt if possible, and leave your flashy jewelry at home.

Be Careful When Driving

Driving in another country can sometimes be quite challenging! Ensure you know the local traffic laws and customs, as they may vary from what is typical in your home country. Avoid driving at night if possible, drive defensively, and watch for animals or pedestrians who may unexpectedly cross the road in front of you.

It’s also important to note that police may stop drivers for checking purposes, so always have your documents ready when driving in Kenya!

Sample Costs of a Kenyan Getaway on a Budget

Going on a Kenyan getaway can be incredibly exciting, but knowing the sample costs you might incur during your stay is essential. As with any holiday, there can be various costs depending on multiple factors.

Here are some sample costs you might encounter when traveling to Kenya on a budget:

  • Hotel Accommodation: You can expect to pay between KES 3,000 and KES 5,000 ($30 and $50) per night for a private room in a guesthouse or backpacker hostel.
  • Transportation Costs: Busses and matatus (minibus taxis) vary in cost depending on the distance you’re traveling but are known to be very affordable. A one-way ticket to Nairobi should cost no more than KES 250 ($2.50).
  • Local Food and Drinks: You can get delicious local food for roughly KES 500 ($5) per meal. Drinks such as soda, water and beer are surprisingly cheap, with prices going for around KES 100 ($1) minimum.
  • Safari Tours: Safari tours vary significantly in price, so be sure to do your research first. However, some budget options start around $60 per person.

Keep these sample costs in mind when planning your holiday in Kenya—the good news is that it is possible to experience unique journeys without blowing your budget!

How to Find Cheap Safari Deals

Kenya is a popular destination for safari enthusiasts, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are some ways to find affordable safari deals in Kenya:

  • Plan: Booking your safari in advance can help you secure early bird discounts and other promotional offers.
  • Travel during the low season: The low season in Kenya typically runs from April to June and October to December. During this time, you can find cheaper safari deals as tour operators and lodges offer discounts to attract more visitors.
  • Compare prices: Research and compare prices from different safari operators and lodges. You can find better deals by shopping around.
  • Join a group tour: Group tours can be a cost-effective safari experience. You’ll share the costs of transportation and accommodation with other travelers, which can bring down the overall cost of your trip.
  • Consider a budget safari: Budget safaris offer a more affordable alternative to luxury safari experiences. While the accommodations and amenities may be more basic, you can still enjoy an authentic safari experience without breaking the bank.

Following these tips, you can find cheap safari deals in Kenya and enjoy an unforgettable experience without breaking the bank.

In conclusion, visiting Kenya on a budget can be an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience. You don’t have to break the bank to enjoy all that Kenya has to offer – with a few tips and tricks and some research, you can find affordable accommodation and ways to see the country’s unique natural beauty on a budget. From Masai Mara to Lake Naivasha, Kenya is a destination gem; you don’t need to spend a lot to enjoy it. Happy travels!

The 8 most unmissable places in Kenya

Maasai in the Grass

A trip to Kenya is synonymous with safari, and rightfully so. Its national parks teem with wildlife, with the most famous being the Masai Mara Game Reserve, famous for the Big Five – lion, leopard, black rhino, elephant and buffalo – and the Nilotic Maasai tribe with their distinct red traditional shuka (checkered cloth).

But Kenya has much more to offer than national parks . There are forested mountains begging to be clambered up and sprawling cities teeming with vibrant social and cultural scenes. You can relax on pristine beaches, dive into underwater wonderlands in the Indian Ocean, or go on a thrilling off-road adventure.

No matter what type of trip you seek, Kenya will provide it. Here are the best places to add to your itinerary.

Fruits stacked at a local fruit and vegetable market in bustling Nairobi, Kenya

Best place for culture and nightlife

A city at the center of it all, Kenya’s capital is a great stopover if you’re looking to head off on safari, hit the beach or visit incredible restaurants.

Unpack your bags and spend a couple of days eating and drinking your way across the array of bars and restaurants in Nairobi  – buzzy spots such as Cultiva , where the chef’s South American roots can be tasted in each farm-to-table dish, or  Unseen Nairobi , an independent art house and rooftop bar, where signature sandwiches serve as the perfect side to indie films.

With art galleries, open-air cinemas showcasing African films, shopping, stand-up comedy shows and museums, Nairobi is rich in cultural experiences.

Planning tip: Even in the capital, you can get up close with wildlife. Options include seeing orphaned baby elephants at Sheldrick Wildlife Trust , feeding Rothschild giraffes at the  Giraffe Centre  and spotting four of the Big Five (not elephants) at Nairobi National Park against an unlikely backdrop of billboards, traffic and skyscrapers.

Best place for rugged exploration

Remote, inhospitable and historically drought-stricken, Turkana looks like a vast empty area on a map of Kenya, but it’s a big draw for adventurers who thrive on challenge. Although the region has an airport, the thrill is in driving, which requires a reliable 4x4 to navigate the craggy roads.

Given how hot and arid the region is, jade-blue Lake Turkana, the largest desert lake in the world, is a wonderful surprise. Visit Eliye Springs with its sandy beaches and towering green palm trees, and you'll think you’re on Diani Beach on the Kenyan coast, or rent a speedboat and zip to Central Island , where a short hike leads up to a volcanic crater lake. Don’t forget your swimming trunks, and be wary of Nile crocodiles camouflaged on the rocks.

Fast-developing Lodwar town bursts with lively nightlife and also features its own replica of Brazil’s famous Christ the Redeemer statue. For a real glimpse into the past, drive 129km (80 miles) west to see a replica of the archeological fossil remains of Turkana Boy, which is how this region came to be known as the “cradle of mankind.”

Planning tip: Time your visit with the annual Lake Turkana Cultural Festival in June for better insight into northern tribes such as the Borana, Rendille, Turkana and Samburu. Drive east of Lake Turkana, and you’ll get to the Chalbi Desert, which has salt pans that spread to the Ethiopian border. You can sandboard the dunes and meet villagers at North Horr to gain an insight into their culture.

Cheetah interacts with a safari vehicle in Maasai Mara, Kenya

3. Masai Mara

Best place for safari

One of Africa’s great bucket-list safari destinations, Masai Mara lies in Kenya’s southwestern region and stretches for 1510 sq km (583 sq miles) into Tanzania’s Serengeti. Spot all the Big Five and other wildlife here, as well as more than 450 species of birds.

Choose your own adventure and observe wildlife from a safari vehicle, aboard a hot air balloon with a champagne breakfast, on horseback or on a guided walking safari.

You can also visit Maasai villages for a first-hand insight into this legendary tribe’s way of life and their historical and spiritual bond with the land.

Planning tip:   The best time to visit  is between July and October when millions of wildebeest migrate across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem in search of verdant pasture and to calve, an action-packed scene that often involves them being hunted down by crocodiles and big cats.

Best place for birdwatching

Kisumu is the gateway into western Kenya and boasts an idyllic proximity to one of the African Great Lakes, Lake Victoria .

Boat rides and bird-watching are the big draws here. Head to Le Pearl or Dunga Hill Camp to try tilapia, either deep-fried or slathered in a thick and delicious fried tomato and onion base, served with ugali (a local staple similar to a thick porridge).

The sunsets over the water in Kisumu are worth the trip, but you can also dance until morning to popular ohangla music at various spots in town, explore the  Impala Sanctuary or visit out-of-town caves and rock formations, such as Kit-Mikayi and the lesser-known Abindu Caves.

Zip down to the lake’s most popular islands: Mbita, Rusinga and Takawiri, where the beaches are powder white and the sunsets glow. As the sun sets, you'll see the “ghost cities” formed by hundreds of lanterns hoisted on wooden canoes by fishermen heading off to fish by night.

Planning tip:  Getting here from Nairobi requires either a 45-minute flight or at least six hours on the road, but your best bet is the passenger train service .

The sand of Shela beach in Lamu, Kenya

5. Lamu Island

Best place for relaxing beach breaks

If you’re looking for a laid-back destination with gorgeous beaches in Kenya, the Lamu archipelago is the place.

History buffs should head to ancient Lamu Town – as the oldest Swahili settlement along East Africa’s coastline, everything from the architecture to the food is storied. The streets are so narrow that it’s inaccessible by car; donkeys or walking were once the only mode of transport, but in recent years, motorbike taxis called boda-boda  have changed the vibe of the town, whizzing through the corridors blasting the latest hits.

Hop on a speedboat and explore other spots across the archipelago, such as Kiwayu Island. Sitting in Kiunga Marine National Reserve, it’s ideal for diving or sport fishing. In Shela village, holiday homes with infinity pools that gaze out to the sea are the norm. The annual Lamu Yoga Festival in October draws students from across the world.

An evening sunset cruise aboard a traditional Mozambican-style dhow (wooden boat) is a must. The island has lots of great restaurants, such as those at Peponi Hotel and Kijani Hotel, or have a drink at the Floating Bar.

Planning tip: Clothing that covers shoulders and chests is expected; Lamu is a largely Muslim town.

6. Amboseli National Park

Best place to see elephants up close

With miles of dusty semi-arid grassland unexpectedly dotted with acacia trees and green marsh fed by underground water sources, Amboseli National Park features large herds of elephants wallowing in the shallows, dust-bathing or coming so close to your vehicle that you can see their eyelashes.

Africa’s tallest mountain might be in Tanzania, but the best views of Mt Kilimanjaro are undoubtedly from Kenya. On a clear day, you can see its snowcapped peak jutting out into the sky, making an incredible shot for photographers. Come evening, kick back with a sundowner and enjoy the views, which are even better at sunrise from the vantage point of a hot air balloon.

Wildlife use the neighboring Kimana Sanctuary as a corridor to move from the park to the Chyulu Hills and Tsavo , and your visit supports a community-owned conservancy – Kenya’s first, set up in 1996. To champion the shift from hunting to conservation in a community where killing lions was once a rite of passage, they also host a fun biennial Maasai Olympics, in which young men compete in club- and spear-throwing, high jumping and sprinting races.

7. Matthews Range

Best place for hiking

Getting to the far-flung Matthews Range in Samburu is no easy feat. Hikers can choose from various scenic routes , each just as serene as the next, but for the best experience, pick a trail that leads through a canopy of trees with emerald undergrowth so thick you'll need a machete to clear the pathway, emerging at an icy cold rock pool on River Ngeng.

The highest peak in these mountains is 2688m (8819ft), and temperatures get as low as 10ºC (50ºF). You can camp or stay at remote lodges, like Kitich Forest Camp , where you'll be paired up with a Samburu guide who will help you navigate the area and point out wildlife by their tracks and sounds.

On your way down from the peak, try to spot Hartlaub's turaco, a bird that may as well be the Kenyan mascot because it has the same colors as the flag, and De Brazza’s monkey, a master at camouflage.

Three camels walking on the beach in Diani Beach, Kenya

Best place for marine life

Watamu is a great hub for exploring the north coast, and the culture has such a distinct Italian influence that several locals speak the language; improbably, Italians first came here in the 1960s to work at the nearby Luigi Broglio Space Center. Many restaurants offer pasta, pizza and gelato, and even some street signs are in Italian.

Go diving or snorkeling in the marine park , join the Saturday evening parties at Papa Remo Beach , visit the striking canyons at Marafa Hell’s Kitchen (just not in the middle of the day because you might pass out from the heat), sign up for boozy sunset cruises down Mida Creek or kite surf at Che Shale .

Planning tip: If you’re here in October, watch huge humpback whales launch themselves into the air before landing back in the sea a few feet away from your boat.

But what you’ll spend on car rental and petrol, you’ll make up with cheap accommodation.

I visited Malawi for my 29th birthday, and I’d go back in a heartbeat.

For 7 days, I called Mumbo Island my home. It’s an uninhabited island in the middle of Lake Malawi, and it’s considered one of the top eco-lodges in the world.

You would think that means you’d have to drop some serious $$$ to stay there, right?

If you’re not looking for something more backpacker-friendly, Malawi delivers.

Go scuba diving for R700.00 ($45) per dive, hike to the summit of Lake Mulanje or attend the iconic Lake of Stars music festival.

While Malawi isn’t a safari destination, you can easily hire a car or join a group tour and hop the border over to Zambia’s world-renowned South Luangwa National Park .

Plus, you don’t need to hire a car to explore Mozambique. There are local buses running from Maputo to Tofo for as little as R80.00 ($5), and short tuk-tuk rides cost even less.

You’ll have more than enough room in your budget for all the adventure activities with cheap eats and dorm rooms in abundance.

One thing I will say about Rwanda is that the gorilla permits are in fact expensive. The most expensive between the three countries to see the Mountain gorillas. Uganda is less and has almost a guarantee of seeing them at Bwindi and Virunga has a pretty good success rate and is even less.

March 18, 2018 at 3:39 am

True. I did the Dian Fossey hike in Rwanda and managed to see three gorillas on the way back down 🙂 But I’d love to go and do gorilla trekking on the Congo side and hike their volcano one day. They are even cheaper than Uganda and there’s a tour company that runs pickups from Kigali International Airport. It’s on my bucket list!

Budget Tours & Trips to Kenya Reviews

It was definitely an experience of a lifetime and you would not regret it.
Michael and the team are just amazing and made the trip as comfortable as possible. Michael the guide had so much knowledge about the animals and vegetation. The porters are super friendly and the chef made some amazing meals I didn’t expect to get on the mountain. The route was spectacular from start to finish, the last lodge was a an amazing place to finish off the trip.
My first time camping and I had a blast! David was a fantastic CEO: helpful, patient, informative and good natured. The people, places and animals I’ve seen will stay will me for a long time.

We really got to be "on vacation" and just take it all in, knowing that you had everything planned and organised.

Lapped by the Indian Ocean, straddling the equator, and with Mount Kenya rising above a magnificent landscape of forested hills, patchwork farms and wooded savanna, Kenya is a richly rewarding place to travel. The country’s dramatic geography has resulted in a great range of natural habitats, harbouring a huge variety of wildlife, while its history of migration and conquest has brought about a fascinating social panorama, which includes the Swahili city-states of the coast and the Maasai of the Rift Valley.

Kenya’s world-famous national parks, tribal peoples and superb beaches lend the country an exotic image with magnetic appeal. Treating it as a succession of tourist sights, however, is not the most stimulating way to experience Kenya. If you get off the beaten track, you can enter the world inhabited by most Kenyans: a ceaselessly active scene of muddy farm tracks, corrugated-iron huts, tea shops and lodging houses, crammed buses and streets wandered by goats and children. Both on and off the tourist routes, you’ll find warmth and openness, and an abundance of superb scenery – rolling savanna dotted with Maasai herds and wild animals, high Kikuyu moorlands grazed by cattle and sheep, and dense forests full of monkeys and birdsong. Of course the country is not all postcard-perfect: Kenya’s role in fighting Al-Shabaab terrorists in Somalia has resulted in reprisal attacks, while if you start a conversation with any local you’ll soon find out about the country’s deep economic and social tensions.

The coast and major game parks are the most obvious targets. If you come to Kenya on an organized tour, you’re likely to have your time divided between these two attractions. Despite the impact of human population pressures, Kenya’s wildlife spectacle remains a compelling experience. The million-odd annual visitors are easily absorbed in such a large country, and there’s nothing to prevent you escaping the predictable tourist bottlenecks: even on an organized trip, you should not feel tied down.

The major national parks and reserves, watered by seasonal streams, are mostly located in savanna on the fringes of the highlands that take up much of the southwest quarter of the country. The vast majority of Kenyans live in these rugged hills, where the ridges are a mix of smallholdings and plantations. Through the heart of the highlands sprawls the Great Rift Valley, an archetypal East African scene of dry, thorn-tree savanna, splashed with lakes and studded by volcanoes.

The hills and grasslands on either side of the valley – Laikipia and the Mara conservancies, for example – are great walking country, as are the high forests and moors of the Central Highlands and Mount Kenya itself – a major target and a feasible climb if you’re reasonably fit and take your time.

Nairobi, at the southern edge of the highlands, is most often used just as a gateway, but the capital has plenty of diversions to occupy your time while arranging your travels and some very worthwhile natural and cultural attractions in its own right.

In the far west, towards Lake Victoria, lies gentler countryside, where you can travel for days without seeing another foreign visitor and immerse yourself in Kenyan life and culture. Beyond the rolling tea plantations of Kericho and the hot plains around the port of Kisumu lies the steep volcanic massif of Mount Elgon, astride the Ugandan border. The Kakamega Forest, with its unique wildlife, is nearby, and more than enough reason to strike out west.

In the north, the land is desert or semi-desert, broken only by the highlight of gigantic Lake Turkana in the northwest, almost unnaturally blue in the brown wilderness and one of the most spectacular and memorable of all African regions.

Kenya’s “upcountry” interior is separated from the Indian Ocean by the arid plains around Tsavo East National Park. Historically, these have formed a barrier that accounts in part for the distinctive culture around Mombasa and the coastal region. Here, the historical record, preserved in mosques, tombs and the ruins of ancient towns cut from the jungle, marks out the area’s Swahili civilization. An almost continuous coral reef runs along the length of the coast, beyond the white-sand beaches, protecting a shallow, safe lagoon from the Indian Ocean.

Local overpopulation of elephants is usually the result of old migration routes being cut off, forcing the elephants into reserves – like the Maasai Mara and its neighbouring conservancies – where their massive appetites can appear destructive. Adults may consume up to 170kg of plant material daily, so it’s estimated that several thousand tonnes of foliage pass through the Maasai Mara elephant population’s collective gut each month. This foliage destruction puts new life into the soil, however, as acacia seeds dunged by elephants are released when dung beetles tackle the football-sized droppings, breaking them into pellets and pulling them into their burrows where the seeds germinate. Elephants also dig up dried-out waterholes with their tusks, providing moisture for other animals. Elephants are architects of their environment , setting the inter-species agenda by knocking over trees, creating deadwood habitats for invertebrates and causing hundreds of other impacts, all of which are natural functions in a dynamic ecosystem. The jury is still out on how it works when the wildlife corridors are closed, or the parks fenced in. What is not in doubt is that their ivory is increasingly valuable and poaching is on the rise again. And when they are closely managed and secured in safe sanctuaries, the elephant populations quickly reach unsustainable levels. The Kenya Wildlife Service is getting proficient at translocating elephants, moving them around to balance the numbers.

• With an area of 580,400 square kilometres, Kenya is about two and a half times the size of the UK and nearly one and a half times the size of California. The population , which for many years had a growth rate higher than that of any other country, is now beginning to stabilize and currently stands at around 44 million.

• Kenya regained independence in 1963 after nearly eighty years of British occupation and colonial rule. The Republic of Kenya is a multiparty democracy with more than fifty registered political parties.

• With few mineral resources (though potentially viable oil reserves were confirmed recently), most of the foreign currency Kenya needs for vital imports is earned from coffee and tea exports, and tourism. Most Kenyans scrape a living through subsistence agriculture and remittances from one or two family members in paid employment.

• Kenyan society consists of a huge, impoverished underclass, a small but growing middle class and a tiny elite whose success often owes much to nepotism and bribery. Unbridled corruption percolates every corner of the country and affects every aspect of the economy.

• More positively, more than 93 percent of Kenyans have a mobile phone , an exceptionally high figure for a developing country. The mobile money service M-Pesa, allowing anyone with a mobile phone to send money to another phone user, is one of the most advanced in the world, and has transformed the lives of many poor Kenyans working far away from their families.

For Kenya’s forty-plus ethnic groups, the most important social marker is language and the best definition of a tribe (a term with no pejorative connotation) is people sharing a common first language. It’s not uncommon for people to speak three languages – their own, Swahili and English – or even four if they have mixed parentage.

The largest tribe, the Kikuyu , based in the central highlands, make up about 20 percent of the population; the Kalenjin from the Rift Valley 15 percent; the Luhya of western Kenya 14 percent; the Luo from the Nyanza region around Kisumu 12 percent; and the Kamba from east of Nairobi 11 percent. Many people from these big ethnic groups have had a largely Westernized orientation for two or three generations and their economic and political influence is considerable. Which isn’t to say you won’t come across highly educated and articulate people from every tribal background. “Tribes” have never been closed units and families often include members of different ethnic background, nowadays more than ever. Politics still tends to have an ethnic dimension, however: people retain a strong sense of whether they are locals or newcomers. Inter-tribal prejudice, although often regarded as taboo, or at best an excuse for humour, is still quite commonplace and occasionally becomes violent.

Smaller ethnic groups include the closely related Maasai and Samburu peoples, who make up little more than two percent of the population. Well known for their distinctive and still commonly worn traditional dress and associated with the national reserves named after them, they herd their animals across vast reaches of savanna and, when access to water demands it, drive them onto private land and even into the big towns. Many Turkana and some of the other remote northern groups also retain their traditional garb and rather tooled-up appearance, with spears and other weapons much in evidence.

Kenya has a large and diverse Asian population (perhaps more than 100,000 people), predominantly Punjabi- and Gujarati-speakers from northwest India and Pakistan, mostly based in the cities and larger towns. Descendants in part of the labourers who came to build the Uganda railway, they also include many whose ancestors arrived in its wake, to trade and set up businesses. There’s also a dispersed Christian Goan community, identified by their Portuguese surnames, and a diminishing Arabic community, largely on the coast.

Lastly, there are still an estimated 30,000 European residents – from British ex-servicemen to Italian aristocrats – and another 30,000 temporary expats. Some European Kenyans maintain a scaled-down version of the old farming and ranching life, and a few still hold senior civil service positions. Increasingly, however, the community is turning to the tourist industry for a more secure future.

9 cheapest countries to travel in africa.

9 Budget Friendly Countries to Travel in Africa

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I really think that most people have a strong perception that travelling in Africa is cheap.

And I’m guessing this is something to do with the economic disadvantage many of the countries in this continent suffer, coupled with the presumption that places where less tourists go tend to be cheaper.

But sadly, I’m here to bring you the news that it’s just not the case. Or at least not always.

Indeed many travellers tend to be shocked by the costs of travelling in Africa, where lack of infrastructure, remote locations, few tourist numbers, a high risk backdrop and let’s be honest, often corruption, can all hike the prices.

This isn’t to say if you do many things the local way, such as buses and food, you can travel cheaply in Africa.

It’s just that if you want to enjoy some of the experiences that are more geared towards tourists – like hotel or lodge stays, safaris or adrenaline sports (which let’s be honest most of us do) this can really send your budget soaring.

But fear not!

As you know, I love Africa travel and have adventured across 16 nations in this continent (with more planned of course).

What this means, is that I have a fair idea of the real costs of travelling this continent, and with that experience behind me I’m bringing you this list of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa… so here’s my top 9!

Morocco, Chefchaouen, Mountains

We’re going to kick off this list in Northern Africa because, for tourists at least, this can be the cheapest end of the continent.

And straight into number 1, it’s that classic budget traveller favourite, Morocco.

Edging the Mediterranean, Morocco is only a short distance from Spain and, as such, is incredibly cheap to get to, either care of a budget flight or a (more ecological) train and boat journey from Europe .

TOP BUDGET TIP: I always use Skyscanner to find the cheapest flights, including via budget airlines, and use Trainline to find the cheapest trains / buses across Europe.

This is the first reason Morocco is on this list.

But the bargains don’t end there, because Morocco is also super cheap to travel in once you arrive.

Dorm beds in hostels can be picked up across the country for as little as £5 / $6 USD and usually include a free breakfast.

In addition, local food in restaurants and cafes, such a delicious vegetable tagine, can be found for around 40-80 Dirham, which is about £2 / $3 USD, while a delicious mint tea or coffee will set you back just 5-10 Dirham, aka under a pound / dollar.

Trains and local buses are easy and cheap to use across the country too and even car rental is affordable, which makes exploring the diverse landscape and ancient cities of this country very accessible.

Learning more about Morocco’s rich culture is also easy with museum entries and local hammam experiences cost only around 10-20 Dirham – again around a pound or a dollar.

What can start to hike prices in Morocco however are tours, such as those to the Sahara or into the Atlas Mountains. The key here is joining a budget group tour, doing as much as you can via local transport and then haggling as much as you can!

Here’s a well priced tour overnight camel tour to Erg Chebbi Dunes that will give you some idea of costs

And the haggling doesn’t stop there!

No one can visit Morocco without picking a few souvenirs, so hone those skills well enough and you can pick up some real bargains!

All in all, Morocco is definitely one of the cheapest countries to visit in Africa and here’s my list of the 21 best things to do in this fabulously diverse country.

Morocco Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £30 / $40 USD

Tunisia, El Djem, Architecture

And sticking with the North African theme, although moving slightly east, we come to Tunisia, another definite spot on any list of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa.

Long a preferred package destination for many European travellers, Tunisia has sadly experienced a great amount of civil and political unrest in recent years that seriously put traditional tourists off.

As such the industry near-collapsed and despite peace and stability once again having been largely restored, Tunisia’s travel title as a safe destination has not.

While extremely unfortunate, this does mean travel to and within Tunisia is extremely cheap right now and budget travellers can have an amazing time discovering this nation’s beautiful landscapes and dazzling deserts.

Cheap airline flights can be picked up from across Europe, or for those looking to cut their carbon footprints, boats to Sicily in Italy are an easy and short ride.

Budget guesthouses in Tunisia can be found for as little as £10 / $12 USD per night per double, while food at local eateries costs around only £1-3 / $2-4 USD.

Visits to some of the historical sights in Tunisia are a bargain, with entrance to El Jem, for example, setting you back just £6 / $5 USD and you can easily take local shared minibuses, known as a louage, around the country for a few dollars.

It’s totally possible to avoid more expensive organised tours in Tunisia and you should do this if you want to keep your budget low, because they normally involve a private driver which can cost up to £100 / $130 USD day.

Instead, tour guides for specific attractions can be sought out in local areas for around £15 / $13 USD.

Tunisia Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £30 / $35 USD

Egypt, Luxor, Temple of Hatshepsut

And moving further east still, we come to Egypt, absolutely one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa, if not the whole world!

Seriously, out of all the places I’ve been, there’s no question Egypt comes in as one of the biggest bargains going.

Even private rooms in hostels and budget guesthouses here can be picked up for as little as £6 / $7 USD and long-distance trains between major cities such as Luxor and Cairo are only £11 / $13 USD in first class!

While I have to admit I didn’t find Egyptian cuisine the best, it is certainly cheap and the national favourite of Koshari (essentially a mix of rice, lentils, macaroni and tomato sauce) can be wolfed down for as little as £2 / $3 USD.

Then, of course, there’s the sightseeing, because who can come to a country like Egypt and miss out on some of the major historical treasures they have here?!

Seriously when you get to somewhere like the pyramids, where entrance costs just £5 / $6 USD, it’s to hard believe you can really access this site for so little!

Another reason Egypt is one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa is the fact you don’t need to take tours or guides to see the sights, sometimes, as in the case of Abu Simbel, they are even included in the ticket price.

But if you do want to take a day tour of the tombs and temples, for example, it’s good to know these can be picked up for as little as £13 / £15 USD.

I even scored an amazingly cheap Nile cruise when I was in Egypt – found out how here – and also got to dive the red sea for as little as £20 / $23 USD per dive.

No question therefore, that Egypt is definitely one of the cheapest countries to visit in Africa.

Egypt Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £25 / $30 USD

Sudan, Karima, Pyramids at Sunset

And now we start on our journey south, as we move from Egypt overland into Sudan!

Yes this is exactly what I did back in 2018 (albeit in the other direction i.e. from Sudan to Egypt ) before president Bashir was overthrown, but from what I hear from other travellers, Sudan is just as safe and cheap as ever for travellers.

Seriously rivalling Egypt for the title of the cheapest country to travel in Africa, if not the world, things in Sudan are insanely cheap – a sad reflection of the desperate economic situation that has engulfed the country.

When I was in Sudan, I actually found a guesthouse where the price for a bed was £0.75 / $1 USD and with a limited menu (especially for vegetarians) the national dish of ful – basically beans with bread and peanut oil – also costs less than $1 everywhere you go.

Buses in Sudan are amazingly comfortable and still crazy cheap, setting you back just a few dollars for rides that take several hours. There are also trains in the country, but as they cost much the same and are slower and dirtier, why bother?!

Many people, myself included come to see the amazing Nubian pyramids in Sudan, which are free to enter – lying semi-abandoned in the desert – and there’s no need to take a tour.

In fact, I didn’t take any tours while in Sudan, saw everything independently and only spent money on food, coffee, water, guesthouses, buses and the odd camel ride.

There’s literally nothing else to spend your money on in this country, including alcohol, which is illegal under Sudan’s strict Sharia law.

Does it get any cheaper than Sudan? I think not!

Sudan Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller:£10-20 / $13-25 USD

Kenya, Masai Mara, Cheetah Trio

And now we really begin moving south into one of my favourite African countries, the mighty Kenya.

With so much diversity contained within its borders, Kenya is a feast for those looking to sample this continent for the first time, with hiking mountains, discovering amazing national parks, spotting insane wildlife and strolling along beautiful beaches all easy to experience.

Due to recent political disruption, Kenya tourism has slumped… and so too have the prices.

This is now one of the cheapest countries to safari in and with choices as fabulous as Amboseli National Park, Nakuru National Park and the world-famous Masai Mara – found out why it’s my favourite safari destination here – there’s no question Kenya is one of the best too.

3 day / 2 night safari trips to some of these big name parks can be found for around £350 / $410 USD and this includes food, safari drives, guides, entrance and accommodation – usually of the budget camping variety!

If you’re not camping in Kenya, because you’re basing yourself in cities or towns, then dorm beds in this country cost around £8 / $10 USD a night, which is a bargain, especially at the coast, given you’ll be nestled among some posh resorts at some beautiful beachy spots like Diani.

Read More: Full Review of Diani Beach Backpackers

Local food on the street or from small shops in Kenya will set you back around £10-15 / $15-20 per day if you’re doing it cheaply, and local buses / boats are even less.

Don’t forget budget flights can also be snapped up in Kenya – as an example, you can get flights between Nairobi and Mombasa for around £35 / $45 USD – and tuk-tuks or motorbike taxis (called boda-boda) will take you everywhere within small cities or towns for just a few Kenyan shillings.

Yes, Kenya is definitely one of the cheapest countries in Africa and a great option if you are looking to combine safari with the sea!

Kenya Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £45 / $55 USD – activity dependent

Uganda, Bwindi, Gorilla Eating

And just next door to Kenya, is the equally amazing safari destination of Uganda, which is also one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa if you want to enjoy the amazing wildlife and landscapes.

With similar pricing to Kenya in terms of accommodation, food and transport, it’s once again the case that your budget will massively be determined by how many other activities, tours and adventures you undertake in this country – how long they last and of what travel style they are!

The cheapest way to bag safaris to the most famous national parks in Uganda, such as Queen Elizabeth and Murchison River, is to head to the capital Kampala and arrange them from there… although you need to be flexible on dates for this.

Again, a 3 day / 2 night safari excursion will likely set you back around £300-350 / $430-500 USD.

Otherwise, self-drive safaris in Uganda are possible and another way to keep the budget low.

The other place to organise activities and tours from in this country is Jinja – the adventure sports capital of East Africa.

This town is set on the River Nile (in fact it marks the start of half of it) and offers a host of activities including rafting, horseback riding and quad-biking that can definitely hike up the price of travel in Uganda, costing from £35 / $40 USD an hour up to £110 / $140 USD for a full day.

Check out my article about Jinja, Uganda for more information, otherwise, if you want to makes this one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa, make sure you do your research and choose your activities carefully!

If fact, you might want to hold back on all activities in lieu of the big daddy in Uganda, which is gorilla trekking.

Yes Uganda is the cheapest place (within the limits of safety) to see these amazing creatures and while it is still a huge ticket item, you can’t do it for less anywhere else in the world.

Check out my full guide to gorilla trekking in Uganda, including everything you need to know, pack and expect, here or learn more about some top-rated tours that include gorilla trekking in Uganda here .

Uganda Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £55 / $70 USD – activity-dependent (and more with gorillas!)

Malawi, Lake Malawi, Local Life

And now we begin to move further south to the country known as the Warm Heart of Africa!

Yes Malawi is a long, thin-shaped country found on the cusp between Southern and East Africa.

Dominated by Lake Malawi – an African Great Lake – this is one of the best countries in the continent for chilling and one of the cheapest countries in Africa too.

Sadly Malawi’s economy is not doing the best and you’ll immediately see what I mean when you get there.

As the country’s accolade attests however, this has nothing to do with the people’s level of happiness and the friendly greeting you’ll receive.

Local food and buses can be bought for next to nothing in Malawi and accommodation costs here are some of the cheapest in this part of Africa – even at the lake where there are a number of backpacker hostels.

The lake also gives you the chance to scuba dive (around £35 / $45 USD a dive), as well as enjoy boat rides or fishing trips. There’s also some nice hiking to do in the mountains around the Lake, but outside of this, the main thing to do is chill!

With few national parks, Malawi isn’t really a safari destination here, which means just relaxing and getting into the local swing of things is the best activity around.

With this in mind, Malawi is certainly one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa as you won’t be forking out for a huge number of activities.

Malawi Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £30 / $35 USD

#8 Mozambique

Mozambique, Bazaruto Archipelago, View

And sticking with the watery theme, we now come to the coastal dream that is Mozambique – absolutely one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa.

This really is your chance to sample a slice of paradise for next to nothing.

Tragically still suffering from the blight of the civil war that devastated this country for so many years, Mozambique’s economy is not in good shape and tourism is still a fledgeling industry.

But for those who do make it here, they will find amazing ocean views, great swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and even the chance to spot some whale sharks, all for next to nothing.

The main spots to head are on the southern coast, including the backpacker mecca of Tofo.

Here a dorm bed will set you back around £8 / $10 and a meals in local cafés are between £3-7 / $4-9 USD.

Local buses to get to Tofo from the capital Maputo will only cost you around $3 USD and water-based activities start from around £35 / $45 USD.

As such, you can quickly see, Mozambique is certainly one of the cheapest countries to visit in Africa.

Mozambique Estimated Daily Budget for Shoestring Traveller: £30 / $35 USD – activity-dependent

#9 South Africa

South Africa, Cape Town, Clifton Beach

And now we come to the last entry on this list and probably the most famous country to travel in on the continent, and that is the mighty South Africa!

More economically developed than many of the other countries in this part of the world, I’m nevertheless including South Africa as one of the cheapest countries to travel in Africa because of its popularity, ease and brilliance as a backpacking / independent budget travel destination.

Yes tourism infrastructure in this country is well-established and, as such, there’s a huge competition over hostels, buses, activities and other tourism services that keep prices low.

Cape Town is probably the priciest city – stunning as it is – but even here a dorm bed is likely to only set you back £12 / $15 USD.

You really can explore this city by yourself, without a  guide – check out my Cape Town itinerary for more ideas – and use services like Uber to get around cheaply too.

Greyhound buses and budget airlines can shuffle you around this vast country for very little and if you stick to buying food in supermarkets and cooking yourself, you can get by on a food budget of around £15 / $20 USD per day.

When it comes to tours and activities (especially safari ones, which are wildly popular here) the ability to rent a car and self-drive in many of these destinations keeps them much cheaper.

Check out my post about how to enjoy a Kruger safari on a budget for more ideas.

Mini Travel Guide to Africa

Morocco, Todra Gorge, Me

When to Visit?

As a huge continent, it’s impossible to give an overall best time to visit Africa, so I’ve split this question down in sub-regions.

When it comes to North Africa, I highly recommend visiting during the spring and autumn months, ie. April to May and September to October, so that the weather is pleasant enough for sightseeing.

In West Africa, the high season runs from December through February, when the region generally experiences its lowest rainfall and humidity – definitely a good idea to visit at this time!

In East Africa, visiting during the long dry season is a great idea. In general, this runs between the months of July and September and also conveniently aligns with the Great Migration too. the short rainy season in November and December can be another good time to visit this part of the continent.

And finally, we come to Southern Africa.

If you’re heading to Cape Town, I’d visit between November and February, but for Namibia and Botswana, the best months are May through October when it’s cooler and less humid.

Top 10 Places To Visit Along the Kenya Coast

Top 10 Places To Visit Along the Kenya Coast

Anthony is a renowned Africa expert and author of the Lonely Planet guidebook to Kenya.

Running for 1,420km/880mi from Kenya’s border with Somalia in the north to Tanzania in the south, Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline is as beautiful as any in Africa. Arranged along its shore are islands and coral reefs, beach resorts and ancient spice-trading towns where the pace of life moves with sleepy tropical charm.

When talking about the Kenya coast, it’s not just a question of where to go. The Kenyan coastline is also an adventurous, highly active destination, one where you can go diving or snorkeling, travel along the coast in a dhow (traditional wooden sailboat), or simply relax on the beach. And just inland from the water’s edge, there are historic ruins, a sacred forest and a park where you can see elephants.

  • Best time to visit: June to October (cooler temperatures, less rain and good for kitesurfing), October to March or April (for diving and snorkeling)

Kenya Beach Packages

1. Diani Beach

Palm trees in a tropical garden, Diani Beach

Despite its popularity as the number one beach resort town along the Kenya coast, Diani Beach remains a fabulous place to visit. Combining terrific accommodations across all budgets, more water sports and water activities than any other coastal town, and a long and lovely arc of sand, Diani Beach is simply glorious. You can try other beaches nearby, such as Tiwi or Takaungu, and there’s even the sacred forest of Kaya Kinondo.

  • Where to stay: Great backpacker hostels and even better boutique beach hotels (such as The Maji Beach Boutique Hotel or Elewana AfroChic Diani Beach)
  • Activities: Diving, snorkeling, water sports, kitesurfing, boat excursions
  • How to get there: Flights from Nairobi, or a 2-hour drive from Mombasa (with a short car ferry en route)

Diani Beach Tours

Fort Jesus in the Old Town, Mombasa

One of the grand old cities of Africa’s Indian Ocean shore, Mombasa is big, boisterous and filled with clues to a fascinating history. Stare out to sea at Unesco World Heritage–listed Fort Jesus, which has stood guard here since the Portuguese built it back in the late 16th century. Sample the many influences that define Swahili culinary tradition. Or lose yourself as the call to prayer competes with the smell of spices in the narrow tangle of lanes in the old city.

  • Where to stay: Numerous hotels and guesthouses are available in the city. Many visitors choose to stay in one of the nearby beach resorts and visit the city from there.
  • Activities: City tours, dhow cruises, beach visits
  • How to get there: Flights from Nairobi and elsewhere in Kenya. The Nairobi–Mombasa road can be a traffic nightmare.

Mombasa Tours

Kitesurfer, Watamu

One of the more charming small towns along the Kenya coast, Watamu is blessed by one of the loveliest white-sand beaches you can imagine, with some of the best sunrise views in Kenya as a bonus. Despite its size, Watamu has plenty of good places to stay and opportunities to get active on sea and on land. There’s even a local sea turtle conservation project.

  • Where to stay: Watamu has excellent choices across all budgets, and many have an ocean view
  • Activities: Kitesurfing, kayaking, fishing, diving, snorkeling
  • How to get there: Watamu is a 2-hour drive north of Mombasa, or 45 minutes south of Malindi

Watamu Tours

4. Wasini Island

Boats on the water, Wasini Island

Wasini is an utterly gorgeous spot where you will not see the crowds. The diving and snorkeling in the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park is world-class, and explores what could be the most beautiful reef anywhere along the Kenya coast. Throw in a pretty coastal setting, Swahili ruins and plenty of other activities, and you might just decide to stay forever.

  • Where to stay: Wasini has a small handful of low-key budget and mid-range places to stay
  • Activities: Diving, snorkeling, fishing, dhow cruises
  • How to get there: Boats connect Wasini with the mainland, around 75km/46mi south of Mombasa

Wasini Tours

5. Lamu Archipelago

Traditional Swahili food, Lamu Island

Lamu has soul. It rivaled Zanzibar as a medieval East African center for the Indian Ocean trade in spices, and captures the spirit of those prosperous days like nowhere else in Kenya. This laid-back archipelago is a world of historic architecture, timeless fishing villages, stunning beaches (Shela is an old favorite) and a host of fantastic activities that you can enjoy while bathed in the cooling breeze coming off the ocean.

  • Where to stay: Lamu has accommodations choices across the islands, from luxury boutique beachfront hideaways on Manda Island such as Manda Bay to quiet guesthouses by the sea
  • Activities: Diving, snorkeling, dhow trips, beach swimming
  • How to get there: There are daily flights between Nairobi and Lamu Airport (which is on Manda Island), and there are roads up and down the coast, which can connect you to Lamu Island by bus or private vehicle. Boats also connect all the islands of the archipelago and the mainland.

6. Shimba Hills National Reserve

Buffalo with birds on its back, Shimba Hills National Reserve

One of few places to go looking for wildlife along the Kenyan coastline, cool, green Shimba Hills National Reserve is a good place to see elephant, Roosevelt’s sable antelope, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, hippo and several monkey species. It’s a fine way to break up your beach holiday without mounting a major expedition.

  • Where to stay: There are campsites and a lodge here, but most people visit on a day trip from Diani Beach
  • Activities: Wildlife viewing
  • How to get there: Shimba Hills is around 40km/25mi south of Mombasa, and tour operators in both Mombasa and Diani Beach run day trips to the reserve

Shimba Hills Tours

Beach Scene, Malindi

When you’re deciding where to go along the Kenyan coastline, you could do worse than choose Malindi. One of the larger resort towns, Malindi is especially popular with Italians (making the town an excellent culinary choice), and it’s known for its incredible kitesurfing conditions. And, of course, it’s so popular in part because it has a long and beautiful beach backed by palm trees.

  • Where to stay: Malindi has top-notch budget and mid-range accommodations options, many of which are right by the beach
  • Activities: Kitesurfing, diving
  • How to get there: Malindi has daily flights from Nairobi and Lamu. It’s just 115km/70mi north of Mombasa (or 2 hours by road).

Malindi Tours

8. Funzi Island

Beach tent at the Funzi Keys hotel, Funzi Island

A delightful alternative to the beach-and-palm-tree combo that is such a feature of the Kenya coast, Funzi Island is a mangrove island where it’s more about looking for birds and crocodiles than lazing on the sand. Although most people visit for the day, staying overnight is a great way to meet the locals.

  • Where to stay: Apart from the high-end Funzi Keys hotel, Funzi is all about simple homestays with local families
  • Activities: Bird watching, wildlife-viewing boat excursions
  • How to get there: Funzi is 35km/20mi south of Diani Beach; the island is accessible by small boat from Bodo

9. Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve & Gede Ruins

Baby baboon on his mother's back, Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve

Just a few kilometers back (and yet worlds away) from the Mombasa–Malindi road, Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve and the nearby archaeological site make for a fantastic day away from the beach. Look for primates and some of the 230 recorded bird species in the forest, then listen for 15th-century ghosts amid the coral palaces and mosques of Gede.

  • Where to stay: There’s only basic camping (including a treehouse platform) at Arabuko Sokoke and nowhere to stay at Gede
  • Activities: Bird watching, wildlife viewing
  • How to get there: Most travelers visit on a day trip from Watamu or Malindi

Beach, Kilifi

Like nowhere else in Kenya, Kilifi is chic and ecoconscious, and it’s more than just a pretty face. It’s all about fabulous seafood, diving and boating, and the historic ruins of Mnarani. And with Vuma Cliffs, an astonishing place of giant baobabs and black coral cliffs, as well as stunning Bofa and Takaungu Beaches, it may just be the place you decide never to leave.

  • Where to stay: With smart ecolodges and a real rustic, boutique sensibility, Kilifi has fine accommodations, whatever your budget
  • Activities: Diving, boat excursions
  • How to get there: Kilifi is 73km/45mi north of Mombasa and 48km/30mi south of Malindi by road
