Meet Your Guide

strips-04.png

My name is Andrew Christmas and I'm lucky enough to share with you one of my greatest passions, hunting in New Zealand.

For the past ten years I have had the privilege to own and operate one of the North Islands most successful trout guiding businesses based in Lake Taupo,  taupotroutguides.co.nz . It is with great enthusiasm that we can now offer fair chase guided hunting for big game animals such as red deer, fallow deer, pigs, wild rams and goats. This in conjunction with Trout Hunting NZ means we can offer our clients something very unique for the keen outdoors person while in New Zealand.

I was brought up living a simple but rich in experiences life on a small farm in New Zealand. Like many young kiwi boys I remember catching eels, going trout fishing, rabbit hunting, pig hunting and deer stalking with my father like it was yesterday. Somehow all the hours of fencing, moving stock, feeding animals on cold frosty mornings, I have managed to forget. Little did I know the friendship and skills I was picking up along the way would be the foundations of which my future and my family's future would be based around. The relationship formed through the outdoors between me and my father and mother nature will be one which is never broken. I was taught about sustainable hunting and fishing, selecting the right animal for a mature trophy, productive meat hunting and having a high regard for the environment around us. I would like to think those qualities passed to me as a young outdoorsman - from my father, nature and my elders - are ones in which I am teaching and passing onto my clients and my own children.

I am grateful for every day spent on the hill hunting whether it be with friends, by myself or working with clients as I know some would give their right arm to swap opportunities with me. I hope that my enthusiasm, knowledge, desire to get results are passed onto my clients. I'm hoping my guiding helps build relationships similar to those that I have made along the way but also helps construct good, honest, safe, ethical hunters throughout New Zealand. I still live on a farm just out of Taupo in the central North Island with my wife and kids where we raise cattle, pigs and a few sheep so life has done a full circle for me.

If you are looking for a professional, true, unfiltered kiwi experience in stunning scenery with a good bloke, please take the time to give me a ring or an email to arrange a trip you won't forget.

BLUE DUCK STATION HUNTING

Hunting for conservation.

New Zealand’s only native land mammals are pekapeka or the short tailed and the long tailed bat. Humans have introduced all the other land mammals that now call New Zealand home. As these mammals are introduced there are often no predators, add in mild winters and an abundance of food resulting in unsustainable high numbers. Hunting plays an important part of controlling numbers so that our native flora and fauna are not destroyed.

At Blue Duck Station we believe in utilising the whole animal that we have hunted. We feed ourselves and our dogs and service our small mammal traps with the animal. Nothing is wasted and we know our meat is free range, fresh and organic.  Our knowledgeable guides will ensure you have a fantastic learning experience in our remote NZ bush.

Uncontrolled deer numbers can be detrimental for the forest. Problems include lack of regeneration, cleared undergrowth, trampled ground cover, compacted subsoils, exposed tree roots and stripped bark.

We offer guided hunting for both red and fallow deer; the first hunt here is always guided, repeat guests to our lodges are welcome to hunt without a guide by prearrangement and provided they have a valid New Zealand firearms licence. Please ensure that you book early for the roar.

Prices: $295 for a guided hunt or $500 full day (maximum 2 people per guide). Red deer: $500 for a meat deer or spiker. 8 pointers are $800 plus $100 for every additional point. Fallow deer: $250, for a meat deer or spiker. Stags are priced from $800 depending on the head.

Goats are browsers and will eat a wide range of plant material including shrubs, trees, grasses and weeds. They are also agile and can accelerate erosion and push holes in fences. Goats are in abundance on the station and hunting them with a guide is the perfect introduction to larger game for the inexperienced hunter or young fella who wants to learn stalking and bush skills.

Prices: $175 per person for a guided hunt (minimum two people – includes the animal)

Rabbits and hares are primarily an agricultural pest, competing with livestock for pasture and causing extensive damage to erosion prone soil to the point that land can be rendered useless. They can also cause damage to vulnerable native plant communities. Small game are the ideal introduction to shooting and processing your own meat.

Price: $120 per person including all animals

small_game_hunting

Feral pigs can cause long term impacts to the ecosystem, compete for food with native animals, can cause damage to kiwi feeding areas and they also kill lambs and cast sheep. Our pig hunting  includes a guide, ATV transport and experienced pig dogs.

Prices: $595 per guided hunt for up to two people (including the animal)

Hunt Description

Wild pigs are found all over NZ and are considered pests especially by farmers. Captain Cook liberated pigs in NZ in 1773, they have developed the name Captain Cookers and are a handful to hunt with dogs. Hunting is best in evenings, night or early mornings as this will be when they travel to feed. A good boar will make an impressive trophy especially with a decent set of tusks hanging out of its jaw. Best hunting is usually done with dogs but you maybe lucky to catch one grazing in the open on change of light. Pig hunting dogs can be arranged by us on request.

We don’t sell an ‘off the shelf’ tour – every client is different. Let me know what you wish to hunt and how you want your experience to pan out and I will make it happen. If there are species which are not advertised please just ask as we can make most requests happen.

EXCLUSIVE HUNTING ACCESS FEE

Wild pigs and trophy Boars inhabit our Red Stag properties.

Trophy Boar hunting, wild pigs.

Wild pigs inhabit our red stag properties in low numbers and are generally regarded by landowners as pests. There for if wild pigs are encountered on any of our hunts they can be shot for no cost. However if you wish to target a trophy boar a trophy fee does apply. To really hunt successfully for trophy boars in New Zealand you need a team of dogs. We do not have pig dogs at Lake Hawea Hunting Safaris but we can contract professional pig hunters to help you take a trophy boar.

Trophy boar hunting makes for a great day of hunting and when the time comes it’s up to you whether you want to opt for your rifle or knife.

Boar Trophies

Trophies are best available; boars generally carry good tusks and can weigh up to and in excess of 200 pounds. Boars are a range of colours, black or tan being common colours and many boars are a mix of both.

Our Exclusive Hunting Locations

We have exclusive access to thousands of acres of stunning native bush hunting. Your idyllic hunting grounds are set across 2-3 locations at the southern end of Lake Taupō. These various hunting grounds have good representative free range stags roaming the property and trophy stags upward of 300+ SCI within our fair chase environment.

The terrain and hunting conditions are varied with large native podocarp forests, scrub lands (reverted pasture) and open grass pastures which make for a perfect landscape for both the deer and the hunter. Access around the property is on well-formed 4 x 4 tracks but a reasonable amount of fitness will certainly improve your chances. The sheer isolation brings an added edge to this wilderness escape.

When to Visit for Deer Hunting in NZ

The best time of year for deer hunting in NZ is early spring, when the deer shed their winter coats and the days are starting to get longer.

There are also a few other factors that can make deer hunting in NZ even more enjoyable, such as the fact that the deer are more active during this time of year and they are also easier to spot as they move around in search of food.

So if you’re looking for a great opportunity to deer hunt, make sure to book your guided hunt in early spring.

Take in the scenic vistas of the central North Island while stalking your prey. Finish the day off at basecamp, beer in hand!

Outstanding! Matt was an excellent guide with very in depth knowledge of the area and hunting in general. He was very professional and an excellent teacher when it came to showing a few of the lesser experienced lads how to stalk, dispatch and gut our kills.

Me and the boys can't stop talking about how much we enjoyed our trip and can't wait to start planning another one with the guys from Total Safaris NZ.

4-Day North Island Sitka Hunt

Beautiful Sika deer

Sitka Deer hunts start from $5,500 (each hunter) for two hunters with one guide. This includes 4 days guiding, accommodation/food and beverages, also transport to and from the nearest airport. Up grades on stags are totally possible and will be priced according to Wildside's list price (supplied on request), also extra days can be added at an extra cost. Bowhunting can obviously take a little more time than rifle hunting so consider hunting for more days when booking your hunt. Wildside hunting Safaris offers both rifle and bow hunters’ a world class trophy hunting experience on both North and South Islands for all of the New Zealand’s top trophy species. Specialising in professionally guided hunts on New Zealand’s forest clad North Island and the snow capped mountains of the South Island. Within a short walking distance of Wildside’s homestead is some the North Island's most outstanding trophy hunting ever to be experienced. A habitat that is perfectly suited for the thrilling "spot and stalk" hunting for which Wildside Hunting Safaris is world renown. Not only for some of New Zealand’s finest Red Stags and Fallow Bucks but also for trophy species found ONLY on the North Island like the seriously intelligent Sika Stag and the secretive Sambar and Rusa Stags. North Island hunting is typically conducted on easy rolling to hilly bush country where “up close encounters” are experienced by the “spot and stalk” method of hunting. Usually offering at least one shot opportunity per day (for the bow or rifle) and is ideally for the hunter who wants to have the “thrill of the stalk” as well as taking the trophy of a lifetime.
