GITF Guangzhou International Travel Fair 2024

In May 2024, the GITF Guangzhou International Travel Fair will open as the main tourism fair for South China and the Greater Bay Area. This time, COTRI will organise not only the International Chinese Outbound Tourism Conference, but also four thematic villages.

Founded in 1993, GITF started as the first international tourism fair in China With now more than 30 years of history it has become the most important tourism exhibition for South China and the Greater Bay Area, the starting point for more than half of all international trips in Chinese outbound tourism

GITF 2024 will offer from May 16-18, 2024 the first opportunity in the year of China‘s outbound tourism revival to meet old and new Chinese business partners from all over China, with a focus on South China, Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR.

Extended floor space, more featured themes and new villages for well-being, education, outdoor activities and sustainable tourism provide different formats to choose from for exhibitors.

The International Chinese Outbound Tourism Conference, organised by COTRI China Outbound Tourism Research Institute, will bring together the major experts and stakeholders to analyse the ways Chinese travellers want to be informed, inspired and satisfied in their search for new destinations and new experience.

The village format is based on significant changes in both the demand and the supply side of China’s outbound tourism.

On the demand side, Chinese outbound travellers in the post-pandemic period are looking for „discoveries“ of new destinations and activities to show their sophistication to their online and offline friends, they have developed more interest in nature and outdoor activities and for authentic experiences, closer to the local culture. Sustainable tourism and overseas education attract especially younger customers.

Many Chinese follow their special interests in their travels, they choose the activity first, from golf to staying with a local family, from wine-tasting to hiking, not saying: Lets go to Australia and see what I can do there, but: I love National Parks, every year I want to visit another one in a different country. So it make sense to put all National Parks together in one stand.

On the supply side many national tourism organisation are less likely to organise a national stand at a Chinese tourism fair for a number of reasons, including high numbers of visitors from within the region for main destinations and main seasons, strained political relations and concerns about pollution from long-distance air travel. Some still have not noticed the change from low-spending package groups to thematic smaller customised groups providing higher margins.

That’s why villages at the GITF 2024 are providing special interest offers all in one place, creating an easy and affordable way to profit from the new business opportunities in the Chinese market.

Village exhibitors will enjoy free online trainings on how to prepare for the participation in a Chinese fair, support in the production of Chinese language business cards etc. For bookings before the end of the year 2023 a special Early Bird discount applies.

Guangzhou is a busy trade center with hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world (pre-COVID-19), and it is perhaps China's most multi-national city. Though this makes it more complex to control than other cities in China, in comparison with cities of a similar size in the world, the safety of Guangzhou must be among the top .

China is a country with strict gun controls and penalties for crime, and, now CCTV is everywhere on the streets, crime has decreased even more. Though pickpocketing and theft can still happen occasionally, Guangzhou is a heaven for tourists in terms of general safety.

However, in recent decades, with large numbers of migrants settling and increasing nationalization, Mandarin has become more and more popular in Guangzhou.

English is the "first foreign language" and a required core subject in China's schools and universities, so young people should be able to communicate in simple English.

Guangzhou has a humid subtropical climate with plenty of sunshine and rainfall and no snow. Summers are long, humid, and hot, and winters are short, mild, and sunny.

From May to October daytime temperatures often exceed 30°C (86°F). Even in the coolest time, from December to February, the temperature still climbs to around 20°C (68°F) and seldom drops under 10°C (50°F) at night.

As Guangzhou is an international metropolis, the accommodation costs are generally higher than in more provincial areas, however visitors can select from a huge range of options : from high-grade star hotels to all kinds of chain hotels, youth hostels, etc.

The high-end hotels include many internationally famous 5-star or even "super-5-star" hotel brands, e.g. The Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons Hotel. Most of these hotels are located in the most prosperous business districts of Guangzhou: Tianhe and Haizhu. These hotels' management level and service quality maintain a leading position in China.

In recent years, various budget chain hotels have developed rapidly in Guangzhou. Among them, Home Inns, Hanting, Motel, Jinjiang Star, and 7 Days are all well-known hotel brands in China, with moderate rates (standard rooms are usually under 300 yuan). They offer comfortable and safe stays and are widely distributed across Guangzhou's districts.

The best place to stay in Guangzhou depends on who you are and why you're visiting:

  • If you are paying your first visit to Guangzhou: Yuexiu District is attraction packed.
  • If you are traveling with your family: Liwan District is quieter.
  • If you want a metropolis atmosphere: head for Tianhe District, especially Zhujiang New Town.
  • If you are traveling with the one you love: relax on Shamian Island.
  • If you are visiting Guangzhou for the Canton Fair: stay near the site or in Haizhu District.
  • If you only have a one-night layover: stay near Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport

It seems that you are coming from Malaysia and are planning to buy RMB in Malaysia as well. In case of you are running out of RMB you could either use an ATM from the Bank of China or the China Construction Bank to withdraw more RMB or exchange some money at the money exchange machine at the Garden Hotel near the Taojin MRT station. That currency exchange machine is only exchanging about maybe 7-8 different currencies though and not MYR.

While it’s possible to use cash it would be more convenient to use Alipay and WeChat Pay. About 3-4 days prior to your trip to China you could download Alipay and/or WeChat and try to install Alipay and WeChat Pay. After a few days when your identity is verified you could then use Alipay and/or WeChat Pay in China. Credit cards mostly can’t be used in China at all unless if they are UnionPay credit cards.

Cash is accepted everywhere in Guangzhou and in China, it is the law. I was in China and Guangzhou in November 23, April 24 and again next week June 24. Cash is accepted everywhere.

Not credit card, only at hotels and tourist places, if a shop accepts foreign credit card, you instantly know it is catering to tourists. Don’t even try foreign credit card at normal Chinese places.

My first time to Guangzhou was Jan this year and second time was last month. I used cash most of the time, but it is good that you set up your Alipay, very easy to get it done, just link your credit card to it. Good to stay near to a metro station. Just note that not all the ticket machines at the metro station accept cash, but there will be at least one nearby that does accept cash

Thanks for your info

Nice to hear that cash payment is still accepted in Guang Zhou/China.

For me it’s will more comfortable to use cash payment instead when travelling instead.

Thanks for your information.

Believe me or not but Alipay and WeChat Pay payments are better than cash payments. As long as there is no limit on the side of your own bank or credit card company - and I believe only my Taiwanese credit card company has a strange limit of 20 payments each month for each shop and each online entity - then you could pay just everything by Alipay and/or WeChat Pay. As my credit card company has such a stupid limit I’m forced to use mostly cash. Actually you almost never see somebody paying by cash in China anymore nowadays except some Russian tourists and retirees. But even retirees are often using Alipay and WeChat Pay.
