WHERE YOU MAY GO

  • Chevron down BENTSPOKE BREWING CO.

Award-winning brewer, Richard Watkins and partner Tracy Margrain opened Canberra’s newest brewery in 2014. Stainless steel dominates the dĂ©cor of their Braddon premises, with a distinctive bicycle theme giving away the owner’s other passion. With 18 different beers, including rotating seasonals, there’s sure to be something to suit all tastes at BentSpoke . Their beer-infused food is quickly gaining legendary status as well!

  • Chevron down CAPITAL BREWING CO.

Capital Brewing Co. are all about the nation’s capital region and the lifestyle it provides. They celebrate the four seasons and brew beers that pay homage to the weather and great outdoors. With a spirit for adventure, and being 100% employee owned, Capital Brewing co is all about taking care of each other, their customers, communities and their environment. And it’s also a rocking place for a few beers.

  • Chevron down OLD CANBERRA INN

Step inside a living piece of pioneer history built in 1857. The Old Canberra Inn (or OCI to Canberrans) is now a family-friendly pub with regular live music, fresh locally-sourced food and regularly rotating craft beer taps. A perfect lunch stop on the tour; sit back and enjoy some top-notch grub and some local pub hospitality in a truly unique setting.

  • Chevron down ZIERHOLZ PREMIUM BREWERY

Head brewer Christoph Zierholz has been crafting German-inspired beers with a special Canberra twist since 2005. Located in the heart of Fyshwick, Zierholz Brewery brings a little bit of European class to the industrial suburb. Don’t know a Dunkel from a Dopplebock or a Schankbier from a Schwartzbier? Christoph is your man!

  • Chevron down THE DURHAM CASTLE ARMS

An iconic location of the Canberra pub scene, The Durham specialises in sourcing the best of Australia’s craft beers and serving them up with hearty, traditional pub grub. Known for regular tap takeovers and “craft beer fight clubs”, the Durham is the perfect location to fill the belly before the tour continues.

SOMETIMES THINGS CHANGE – Because our Canberra brewery tours are truly behind the scenes experiences sometimes our plans need to change to accommodate brewery operations. And sometimes we just know about beer goings on around town that are worth checking out, so we may change some parts of our tours. Whilst these changes are rare, we do reserve the right to make them. If you do have a MUST-SEE beer spot, please let us know when making your booking and we’ll do all we can to make it happen.

It was an enjoyable day with a small group (6 guests plus guide/driver). Part of the tour, as advertised, was a behind the scenes look at a local winery, but this did not take place. We visited three wineries in total (one for lunch but this included a tasting as well!). Two of the wineries - Shaw and Four Winds - were very good, but the third was below average - the wines were not as good and there were no tasting notes provided. Lunch at Four Winds was exceptional. Merry Heart CBR Canberra Winery Tours logo open to customisations

Half-Day Canberra brewery, wineries & distillery tour

Depart from Jolimont Tourist Centre, outside Novotel on Northbourne Ave.

Arrive at Clonakilla

No wineries tour is complete without tasting the famous Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier, amongst other excellent wines.

The Wall Street Journal: “Some argue this is Australia’s greatest red wine, it is certainly one of the greatest Shirazs”

James Halliday: “an icon wine, one of the best in Australia”

It has been a remarkable journey for Clonakilla. When John Kirk planted the first vines in 1971 he had no idea that his vineyard would one day be celebrated as one of the best in the country. Along the way there have been trials and tribulations as well as moments of unprecedented success.

Over time something important has become clear: Murrumbateman and Shiraz are one of those rare combinations in the world of wine that can produce something truly exciting.

Arrive at Four Winds Vineyard for a pizza lunch.

The Four Winds Story began with a miner and his wife who lived on the property in a slab-hut. Her name was Scheherazade, after the story telling character in The Arabian Nights. Her favourite story described a magic carpet being borne by the four winds of good fortune. She named this small farm in Murrumbateman ‘Four Winds’ in the hope it would carry their good fortunes.

Four Winds planted their thirty-three acre vineyard in 1998 and 1999 with five varieties: Shiraz, Riesling, Cabernet, Merlot and Sangiovese.

Arrive at a Distillery, such as:

Ambrosia Distillery

Get to taste around 5 gins and a vodka. From the owner: ““I wanted to make a spirit of the highest quality, using the most effective purification and flavor infusion techniques, without being ridiculously priced. After working behind a bar for more than 10 years, I saw a gap in the market for high quality and uniquely flavored spirits that can be the star in creating exciting new and bespoke cocktails, mixed drinks, or a fun and enjoyable shot. Once I had an idea of what flavors I wanted to create, I used my previous distilling experience and knowledge in semi permeable membranes gained from a medical science degree to bring the dream to life.”

Big River Distillery

Distilling is an exact science, combining flavours and inspiration. Curious and independent, we are guided but not bound by tradition. We create spirits that reflect the unique Canberra environs. They enliven your senses and evoke a sense of time and space.

Our gin is produced using a 420 L stainless-steel pot still fitted with a copper botanical basket in a “single -shot” distillation. Neutral grain spirit (from a wheat based feedstock) of the highest purity (96.0% ABV or higher) is used as the base to ensure the botanical flavours are not muddied by any dirty spirit character. This spirit is cut back with filtered, beautiful water fresh from the Brindabella mountains.

Depending on the spirits we’ll either macerate the botanicals, vapor infuse them, or use a combination of both. The distiller then makes a heads and tails cut, by nose, keeping only the middle fraction of the distillate, known as the hearts, and the spirit is bottled at its designated strength. After bottling we give our spirits a few weeks rest to allow for flavour reformation.

Arrive at a Brewery, such as:

Capital Brewery

Capital Brewing Co. is 100 per cent independently employee owned, formed by a close group of mates who froth on delicious brews, surfing waves and good vibes. They in making great brews, looking after people and the environment.

They also believe that the most important piece of brewing equipment is the stereo!

BentSpoke Brewing Co.

Craft beers that everyone can enjoy. Not just beer aficionados with hop crumbs in their moustaches. ‘Good Natured’ is the lens that we put across every beer we brew, and everything we do. We always use fresh, natural ingredients that we source locally wherever possible to minimise our impact on the environment. For more info on how seriously we take this responsibility click here. And being located at the base of Brindabellas makes it easy to source some of the cleanest water on the planet to make our beer.

Head back to Jolimont Tourist Centre

  • Your wellbeing is at the heart of Merry Heart CBR.
  • Whilst it is a non-judgmental setting: if you are prone to binge drinking or had any recent alcohol use disorders, then please do not put yourself into a tempting environment such as this.

Some further discouragements:

  • Note that alcohol or other illicit substances do not provide rest, as your body goes into overdrive to clear out the toxins. True rest/relief may be better achieved by taking small steps towards completing your tasks or solving the problems you are facing.
  • “Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long at the wine, Those who go in search of mixed wine. Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it swirls around smoothly; At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a viper. Your eyes will see strange things, And your heart will utter perverse things. Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying: “They have struck me, but I was not hurt; They have beaten me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?” (Proverbs 23:29-35 NKJV)

From big names like Parliament House and the National Museum of Australia to hidden gems like the Arboretum and Little Burley Market, you’ll have no problem filling your three-day weekend with incredible and inspiring activities. Just follow our guide to the ultimate long weekend in Canberra.

Only have two days? Here's how to spend the perfect weekend in Canberra .

An email you’ll actually love

Three days in Canberra

Friday

With a long weekend in your pocket, we recommend staying at the historic  Hotel Kurrajong for utmost comfort, manicured gardens and country club vibes. The 1920s Art Deco building is an attraction in itself, and perfectly located for exploring all of Canberra’s icons.

Enjoy a ‘Prime Minster’s Breakfast’ in the sunny courtyard, then launch straight into the day by wandering around the National Triangle. You can skip between all the key icons by foot on a self-guided walking tour, including the stunning National Carillon, peaceful Old Parliament House Gardens and historic Blundells Cottage.

A stone’s throw from the cottage is sleek café Intra , where you’ll find Euro-Japanese remixes, like chashu bacon and egg rolls and kimchi jaffles. Sip on housemade sodas or rare Chinese teas before heading to the Australian War Memorial , which was named one of the world’s top ten free tourist attractions in 2023.

As the sun sets, amble over to the award-winning Bar Rochford in the city for natural wines, or stick around for delicious snacks à la anchovy toast with gribiche and Szechuan-peppered lamb ribs. Keep the night going by jumping between several excellent bars in the vicinity, including the speakeasy-inspired Molly and the vibey Bar Beirut .

Saturday

Canberra has a pretty serious coffee scene these days, and you’ll experience the best of it at Barrio Collective, where they roast their own beans and press their own nut milk. Sip your morning brew with Barrio’s cheese toasties, then make your way to The Little Burley Market on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin to buy beautiful blooms, pastries and gourmet goodies for later.

From here, make your way to  Parliament House , the beating heart of Australian democracy. You can explore the public areas at your leisure (and watch the House of Representatives and the Senate from the galleries on sitting days), but we’d highly recommend hopping on a  Yeribee tour to hear the stories of Aboriginal parliamentarians and see celebrated First Nations art.

Next, saunter down the road to the National Portrait Gallery for a squiz at the countless artistic renderings of our country’s most famed characters. Take an afternoon tea break at the Portrait Café for freshly made sandwiches and pastries before hopping over to  Questacon . The spectacular science and technology centre delights young and old with interactive displays and whiz-bang exhibits (plus a quirky gift shop perfect for the future STEM star in your life). Alternatively, while away the afternoon in the National Library of Australia , checking out the extraordinary Treasures Gallery or discovering your next read at the bookstore.

Call it a day with dinner at local Cantonese institution, Chairman and Yip , and drink in the views while enjoying a nightcap at rooftop bar, Leyla .

Sunday

Close out your long weekend with brunch at the Fyshwick coffee house of legendary Canberra roasters, Ona . Nab a chair outside and dive into an extensive list of specialty brews and wholesome dishes, including banoffee French toast and seasonal bowls overflowing with greenery.

Make time for some retail therapy at the Old Bus Depot Markets in Kingston where every Sunday, you’ll find clothing, jewellery and handcrafted wares that’ll brighten up your home. While in the area, make sure to stop in at the Glassworks Workshop to peruse the onsite gallery or even try your hand at glassblowing.

Wind down the arvo on two wheels by hiring a bike from one of the handy self-service stations around the city and glide around Lake Burley Griffin as the sun lowers into the horizon.

Reward your efforts with a casual tipple in the beer garden at Capital Brewing Co , plus a burger or hot dog from the legends at Brodburger.

Five top Aussie pale ales you’ve never heard of

Thanks to established classics from Coopers and Little Creatures, the pale ale is most loved craft beer style in Australia. Here’s five top drops worth trying.

The fight to save beer

Don't miss out on the headlines from Drinks. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Among Australian craft beer lovers, any way you slice it, the pale ale reigns supreme.

According to a 2022 study of 14,000 Australian craft beer drinkers conducted by Beer Cartel, pale out came out on top with 82% of respondents saying they were fans, just ahead of Hazy/New England IPA and IPA/Double IPA, and way in front of the wider nation’s most popular style, lager.

Add to that the fact that the No.1 spot on the 2023 GABS Hottest 100 was Mountain Culture’s Status Quo Pale Ale (for the second year running) and five of the top 10 fell into the same category.

Pale ale was also arguably responsible for the whole craft beer boom in this country, thanks to Coopers’ long running and much loved Original Pale Ale and Little Creatures’ trailblazing drop, which proved to be an inspiration and a gateway for many brewers.

Dave Padden, owner and head brewer at Sydney’s Akasha Brewery, says those two stalwarts of the local industry played a big part in his career path and should be recognised for helping to broaden the country’s beer tastes.

Akasha Brewery founder Dave Padden.

“When people first venture away from macro lager it was definitely into Coopers and I think they absolutely are trailblazers in this country in terms of getting people into better beer,” Padden says.

“But in terms of craft – and particularly American style craft beers – the trailblazers were definitely Little Creatures. That was my introduction to craft many moons ago and it’s still considered one of the classics, no different to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in the States in that both have been given the mantle of that intro to craft for so many people, particularly right at the beginning. Little Creatures for me really was the trailblazer for the current craft movement, but Coopers was there a long, long time before, trying to show people what a real, expertly crafted beer tasted like.”

Akasha Brewery Freshwater Pale Ale.

Padden says his company’s Freshwater Pale Ale has been its biggest seller ever since it opened nine years ago and the style is a winner for craft novices and veterans alike.

“Pale ale is right in that slot that really appeals to most craft beer drinkers, new and old,” he says. “It’s just a classic style that pretty easy to drink, but has that much more accentuated flavour profile. You can taste the beer as opposed to macro lager, which is pretty basic, and it doesn’t have a lot of flavours. Most craft drinkers appreciate the flavour aspect.”

“We find that with the classic pale ale, usually people who are new to craft love it and people who have been drinking craft for a number of years still love it because it’s a great beer. We would tend to direct our newer customers towards the pale ale. We certainly wouldn’t point them towards a triple IPA first up – that might scare them a little. Freshwater is one that we definitely recommend to our newer craft beer drinkers.”

Coopers Pale Ale is an old-school classic.

Padden says that the key to making a good pale ale in Australia is firstly not to overthink it, and secondly to have a “malt base that sits back and lets the hops take centre stage”.

“Most of the market don’t really appreciate a really malty beer these days,” he says,

“so some classic ale malt is what we use, which is the base of every beer, and relatively dry and not too sweet, which aids and drinkability.

“Around 30 to 40 IBUs is what we look at just to keep it nice and dry but not too bitter at the same time. And those classic fruity and pine hops that we love, like Cascade, just to give it that flavour. That light malt base allows the hops to shine through and take centre stage, which is pretty much with beer for us.”

TOP AUSSIE PALE ALES

Given the high regard that brewers hold for the pale ale, Aussie drinkers are spoiled for choice in the category, but here’s five options from slightly off the beaten track.

AKASHA PALE ALE

Dry and very drinkable, not to bitter, with the malts backed off to allow the Cascade hops to take centre stage.

Akasha Brewing Freshwater Pale Ale

FRENCHIES PALE ALE

Dry-hopped with French hops from the Alsace, bringing citrus and floral flavours, balance by a robust caramel malt. A banger with the barbie.

URBAN ALLEY SLAPSHOT PALE ALE

Gold medal winner at last year’s Australian International Beer Awards thanks to a fruity, not-too-bitter blend of citrus, mango, passionfruit and pine flavours.

Urban Alley Slapshot Pale Ale

BRIGHT PALE ALE

Crisp and smooth with the locally grown hops full of tropical flavours. Also a gold medal winner in the category – from last year’s Independent Brewer’s Association Indies Awards.

Two Mates Lovemore Hazy Pale Ale

TWO MATES LOVEMORE HAZY PALE

Deliciously hoppy, yellow hazy brew, with big tropical and citrus flavours, balanced by the pale malted barley.

The ‘boring’ capital city with hip neighbourhoods and kangaroos

Created as a compromise between sydney and melbourne, canberra has become a tourist destination in its own right.

canberra city break australia view from mt ainslie parliament kangaroos hip neighbourhoods

A glimmering expanse of water surrounds historic buildings. They are framed by a canvas of sky turning from indigo to pale gold, then pink-yellow and orange-red. The only sound is from cattle trumpeting in protest at the shadow we cast over their morning graze.

I’m on a sunrise balloon ride with Balloon Aloft Canberra and it’s from this vantage point that I begin to understand the extent to which Canberra is an urban dot in a vast, untamed landscape.

According to a 2022 Earth.org report, Canberra is one of the most sustainable cities in the world thanks, in part, to its green spaces. It’s long been known as the Bush Capital: as I drive up to Mount Ainslie Lookout, just 5km from the centre, kangaroos bound in front of me.

One of the best views in Canberra can be enjoyed from the top of the Mount Ainslie lookout at sunset. Walk or drive to the top as a solo adventurer or with a romantic partner to take in the breathtaking skyline. Canbera Australia Image via Visit Canberra

This proximity to nature has recently helped it to earn the title of the second-best city in the world for quality of life, according to the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index report – yet the choice of a capital with such an enviable backdrop rests on a petty rivalry.

When Australia , previously a loosely connected patchwork of British colonies, federated (with scant regard for its original inhabitants) in 1901, the question of a capital was hotly contested between Sydney and Melbourne. In the end, a compromise was made: it was to be a planned city , somewhere between the two Alpha-cities (although no less than 100 miles from Sydney).

For all the masculinity of the government in the early 20th century, it was, oddly enough, a woman – the Governor General’s wife, Lady Denman – who announced, in 1913, that Canberra (formerly Yass-Canberra) was to be the name of the newly federated nation’s capital.

The architectural brains behind the city was also a woman. Although American Walter Burley Griffin’s name was on the entry form for the international competition to design Canberra, it was his wife, Marion Mahony Griffin – the second woman to graduate in architecture from Massachusetts Institute of Technology – who was, in his words, “the genius” while he was “only the businessman.”

Nevertheless, Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin nods to Walter. Only in 2013 was the view from the 843m-high Mt Ainslie, from which the city’s largely symmetrical layout can be seen, named after her. And, in 2021, her likeness rendered in a bust at the mountain’s lookout.

This recognition is part of a wider shift, which also brought the first statues of women to Canberra’s Parliamentary Zone. Figures of Dame Dorothy Tangney and Dame Enid Lyons, Australia’s first female federal politicians, were unveiled on International Women’s Day 2023. Women’s role in the capital’s history is finally in the limelight.

As is the city itself. Traditionally regarded as “boring” – especially by the denizens of Sydney and Melbourne – Canberra has slowly come into its own. Of course, its visitor numbers can’t yet compete with those rivals. In 2023, both bigger cities welcomed around 10 million domestic visitors. Between them, they greeted more than five million international tourists. Canberra, meanwhile, amassed 5.4 million in total.

But the capital has seen a sustained population increase in recent years and its average cost of living is around 15 per cent less than Sydney’s. Previously, industrial neighbourhoods are now humming with boutiques and bars. Yet, with fewer than half a million residents, the pace is never urgent.

At Good Food Guide-awarded Rebel Rebel, in the artsy New Acton neighborhood, the presence of large and lively tables of diners doesn’t stop my waitperson from lingering to chat.

Among the other venues I visit is Corella, a dining space in the suburb of Braddon.

“Nobody used to come here unless they needed car parts,” says Brady Scholes, Corella’s co-owner. Across the road, Assembly, the other venture he manages with Wes Heincke, is full of after-work revellers, enjoying the sunshine. Canberra, while generally cooler than Sydney, also has lower humidity, and average summer temperatures of 27°C.

The suburb’s upmarket hotels are affordably priced. In Sydney, the average price for a double room in a four-star hotel is AU$208 (£108), as opposed to Canberra’s AU$166. Not that anybody would suggest that Canberra replace Sydney, or Melbourne, on a trip to Australia. Rather, it’s a destination that should be factored into a trip to those cities.

Braddon is not the only Canberran suburb to have had a glow up. Fyshwick, formerly infamous for its sex shops and brothels, is now better known for its fresh food market. Dating to the 60s, it has been extensively redeveloped since 2010.

Part of Canberra’s changing image is championing women. That is what Sita Sargeant’s walking tours, which highlight the spies, the secretaries, the librarians and the female owner of the city’s first ever privately owned gay club, aim to do. I join a tour to learn how female trailblazers have made the city of today.

World-class cultural institutions are among Canberra’s other lures. You can spend hours in galleries and museums exploring indigenous art and culture, and the history of Australian democracy.

She Shapes History Mandatory credit: Tourism Australia Canbera Australia Image via Visit Canberra

For the perspective of a former Sydney resident, I visit friends who relocated to Canberra. “I’d never go back,” says Amber.

“We have so many green spaces and walking trails on our doorstep. The restaurants and the second-hand shopping are great.”

She’s not wrong. When I leave Canberra, it’s with the addition of a flamingo-shaped watering can, a primrose yellow lace cocktail dress and a marabou feather vest. Not exactly what I’d have expected from a “boring” city. But then, Canberra is anything but boring.

Rising returns from June 1 to 16, bringing an eclectic festival of performance, art and music to every corner of Melbourne’s CBD. It’s chaotic in the best way and, with so much to see, do and experience, getting through a packed itinerary makes for hungry and thirsty work. This is where Moon Bites comes in.

This year, Aru is serving a set menu that includes one of the city’s best bread and butter combos and a welcome spritz, while the Parcs menu includes a Marigold highball and cured tuna. Dom’s Social Club ’s got a special pizza topped with red wine-braised beef cheek and fior di latte and, over in Fed Square, you’ve got your choice of three or five courses at [Big Esso] (https://www.broadsheet.com.au/melbourne/restaurants/mabu-mabu-big-esso) and a pre-show menu at [Victoria by Farmer’s Daughters] (https://www.broadsheet.com.au/melbourne/restaurants/victoria) that includes a Victorian wine or beer. By the river, Arbory introduces a new three-cheese fondue for two, paired with mulled wine. Over at the multi-venue Her, you can get pasta specials (baked rigatoni, clam spaghetti and casarecce with ragu) downstairs at Her Bar and wok-fried Thai hits upstairs at BKK .
