Perhaps the best way to get to Toledo, though, is the tourist bus that picks passengers up from their hotel with only one morning departure time. Either bus service is cheaper than the train. Whether you take the bus or the train should depend on whether you are close to the train station or one of the hotel pick-ups.

The  high-speed train  from Toledo to Madrid takes about 30 minutes and costs about 14 euros, so if you are staying near Atocha train station, this is the best way to get to the tourist city. However, there is now a bus service that will pick you up from your hotel and take you straight to Toledo. This is the easiest, cheapest, and probably the quickest way to get to Toledo unless your hotel is right next to the Atocha train station. 

The high-speed train from Madrid to Toledo departs from Atocha, Madrid's main train station. Trains depart every hour or half hour in the morning and every hour in the evening, with the journey taking about half an hour. 

Train times are subject to change, so check the latest train times at Rail Europe before you depart for the day. This is a good option if you are staying close to the train station. Toll fees are based on distance but if you happen to be driving on AP-41 from midnight to 6 a.m. there won't be any tolls charged.

If you're traveling in a bus or car, try to avoid leaving Madrid during the morning and evening rush hour. But if that's not possible, expect the journey to take a bit longer than an hour and expect some heavy traffic in the city. In terms of weather, Toledo is at it's most pleasant in May, June, September, and October. Days are warm without being sweltering and crowds are smaller, especially if you travel in the spring.

What Is There to Do in Toledo?

Most visitors explore Toledo on a day trip from Madrid and there are plenty of tours that can whisk you around the local highlights. However, there's plenty to do on your own in the city. Your main reference point will be Plaza Zocodover which is close to the Puerta Nuvea de Disagra, our recommended point of entry into Toldeo from the bus or train station. Once in the Plaza, you'll see an archway which is a statue of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote. Cervantes wrote a part of his most famous book in the vicinity of this statue.

South from Zocodover is the Alcázar. Turn left from here and you will approach the cathedral, once one of the most important in all of Spain. Walk around it and veer off to the left to get to the old Jewish quarter. Also nearby is the Iglesia de Santo Tomé.

On your way out of the city, don't forget to stop off at the Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz, not far from Bisagra, which was where you entered the city. You can also take a guided walking tour or even take a balloon ride over the city if you have enough time while in Toledo to truly adventure around and explore.

Just because most visitors to Toledo only visit for the day doesn't mean it's not a great place to stay. Apart from allowing you to take your time and see everything you want without feeling rushed, getting accommodations in Toledo and venturing out on a day trip is a great way to experience the region.

The best of these day trips is a journey to see the windmills of Consuegra, similar to the ones made famous by the novel Don Quixote. There are regular buses from Toledo that leave every hour or so and take approximately 90 minutes to complete the journey through these little La Mancha villages. 

There are also buses to Cuenca, Aranjuez and, sometimes, to Granada. But, check with bus operators because not all of them, especially the Granada route, will run throughout the year.

• Toledo to Aranjuez —This is a great alternative to going straight back to Madrid (or straight to Toledo from Madrid) with service run by Aisa (not ALSA).
• Toledo to Consuegra —Offers several trains per day run by Samar .
• Toledo to Cuenca —There is only one train per day that usually departs in the evenings and is run by Aisa.

You can also travel in your own form of transportation by renting a car or scooter and taking a self-guided tour of Madrid, Toledo, and Segovia instead, which provides a lot more flexibility to your itinerary as well as more room for error in timing.

Unfortunately, public transport from Toledo to the south of Spain is limited and you will usually need to go back to Madrid in order to travel elsewhere. However, if you have your own car, it is easy to go south from Toledo to Cordoba, perhaps stopping by in Consuegra on the way to see the windmills. Bag yourself an air-conditioned seat and oodles of leg room all the way from Madrid to Toledo by booking a private taxi. The beauty of this mode of transport is that you can organise to be picked up pretty much anywhere in the capital you want. The lobby of your hotel on the Puerta del Sol? Easy. The terminals of the Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suarez Airport? That can be arranged. All you have to do is sling the luggage in the trunk and you’ll be Toledo bound in a no time.

The drive isn’t particularly pretty. You’re likely to follow the main A-42 motorway all the way there. However, it should take just an hour maximum, and probably even less than that. You can also be dropped off wherever you want in Toledo, so there’s no stress reaching that charming boutique hotel overlooking the Rio Tagus. Prices do shoot up for private taxis, but bear in mind that rates are for full vehicles. Big groups or families could actually save money by sharing the cost between them.

Toledo is layered in Roman, Visigoth, Christian and Moorish history and culture. Some say it’s the single most atmospheric stop in Spain. Don’t miss it. Book your travel there from the capital and start dreaming of Gothic churches and filigreed mosques today.

Madrid to Toledo FAQ

The local ALSA buses charge a mere $5.50 for the one-way trip from Madrid to Toledo. Sadly, they leave from the multi-storey Plaza Eliptica station. That’s on the south side of the city, linked to the popular tourist hotspots by Line 3 and Line 6 of the metro network – have a few euros handy to pay for that.

Train is probably the quickest way to go from Madrid to Toledo. You’ll roll out of big Atocha Station and arrive into the platforms below the cobbled old town just 35 minutes later. Be sure to get there early for the ride and book tickets in advance using 12Go.co for the top deals.

That’s easy. There’s a direct connection between the two courtesy of Spain’s fast AVE trains. All you need to do is pre-book tickets on 12Go.co and then rock up to Atocha Station at the time you’ve chosen to leave. The ride is about 35 minutes from start to finish.

Trains bound for the historic wonders of Toledo shouldn’t put you too much out of pocket. Advance tickets – the ones you should easily find by searching on 12Go.co – are usually priced at a little over €12 ($13). You can also get small discounts by booking a return to Madrid at the same time.

The local bus is just $5.50. However, it’s not the comfiest way to get to Toledo, mainly on account of all the stops it makes. You’ll also need to get down to Plaza Eliptica station to board, which adds about 30 minutes or so to the trip.

Be ready to fork out around $120 or more for a private taxi straight from Madrid to Toledo. Expensive, yep. But there are caveats. For one, the taxi is comfy, with air-conditioning and plenty of space. Most importantly, it can be arranged to collect you from any spot in the capital – the airport, your hotel, the main Puerta del Sol – and drop you right at the door of your next stay down in Toledo itself. Easy.

Renting a car is my favorite way to travel, because it gives me total flexibility. If you’re planning to visit other places after/before Toledo, I definitely recommend renting a car. If you’re only doing a day trip Madrid to Toledo, then it’s probably not the best option, since you won’t really need your car to explore Toledo.

To get from Madrid to Toledo by car, it’s very easy; the A-42 goes straight to Toledo, and it doesn’t even have tolls.

If you use the freeway , it will take you around 1h  to reach Toledo.

The cost to get from Madrid to Toledo by car includes car rental and gas.

Renting a car from the Madrid airport for 1 day is really cheap, and unless you want a really fancy car, you’ll find one for around 10€, including unlimited mileage and insurance.

The autobus Madrid Toledo takes a little longer than the other transportation options, but it’s the cheapest option. What I love about the bus is that it takes you right in the old center, ready to explore the city.

The bus Madrid to Toledo takes around 50 minutes to do the trip, and leaves from the Plaza Eliptica station. The station is in the south of Madrid, and you’ll need to account for additional time to reach it.

The bus is the cheapest option to go from Madrid to Toledo, costing around 12€ for a return trip.

To train Madrid to Toledo takes exactly 33 minutes to reach its destination. The train will drop you in Toledo main station, which is only a short walk to the old center (15 minutes).

It’s absolutely huge, and filled with things to discover: more than 20 chapels, a cloister, the bell tower, and even a museum. Plan at least 2 hours if you want to see all the beauty of the place.

Mirador del Valle

The mirador del Valle is the best view over the city of Toledo, and the perfect postcard view you have probably already seen everywhere.

Definitely a must-see in Toledo, it will give you an incredible view over the city, and it’s the perfect place to catch the sunrise or the sunset.

What to Eat in Toledo

So you’re thinking about visiting Madrid ? You’ve made an excellent choice. Spain’s capital is an extremely friendly destination that happily accommodates tourists while still retaining its unique identity.

Duck down any side street, away from the souvenir stalls selling magnets and flammable flamenco frocks, and you’ll discover pretty little squares, dusty 100-year-old artisanal shops and the somber doors of cloistered convents. 

Although I’ve been living here for 10 years, I continue to be surprised by the city, which, though small, seems to contain infinities. It’s particularly magical at sunset, when residents come out in force to walk their dogs, nip into the shops or have a caña – a small, chilled glass of beer with a good head of foam. 

While other cities might feel frenetic, Madrileños always take life at their own pace. This is particularly important to bear in mind when you’re waiting to order a drink! Service is invariably slow, yet delivered with a winning smile. Still, it’s nice to feel that in the heart of a busy metropolis, nobody is rushing things. Here's everything you need to know ahead of your trip to Madrid. 

1. Give yourself at least two days

Madrid is a compact, walkable city, but you’ll still need at least two or three days to get a proper handle on it. If you want to add in day trips to nearby Toledo , Segovia and Cuenca , give yourself at least a week. 

2. Know how to get into the city

While  the metro is the best way around town , it’s not necessarily the best way in, especially if you have a lot of luggage. From the Madrid airport's Terminal 4, you can catch the Cercanias train to Atocha via Chamartín and Nuevos Ministerios. From T1, T2 and T3, look out for the bus that takes you to Atocha. This will save you a long walk to the metro station. A taxi from the airport to the city center costs a fixed €30 rate. 

3. Be ready for all seasons

Outside of summer, Madrid’s weather is notoriously changeable. This is particularly true in autumn and spring, when you might find yourself in shorts and a T-shirt only to start shivering when the sun sets.

In terms of style, anything goes. Spaniards are easygoing about fashion, though they will have a good laugh at your expense if they spot you wearing short sleeves in winter. Men should be aware that going topless in the city is frowned upon, even in the hottest months.  

4. Pack some earplugs

Madrid is unapologetically noisy: conversations in bars are loud and dramatic, train carriages buzz to the beat of tinny speakers and on weekends citizens party way into the wee hours. 

The best way to cope is to bring earplugs and make sure you book a room facing away from busy roads. Check reviews to ensure your hotel isn’t right next to a bar. That being said, night owls will have a blast . 

5. Go exploring on foot

Madrid’s metro is efficient, clean and cheap. However, you can walk to most places within the center. It’s a great way to get to know the city, and you’ll find Spaniards more than happy to point you in the right direction. Unfortunately, many are so keen to show off their local knowledge that they might confidently give you incorrect information when unsure. If you spot a flicker of hesitation, take what they say with a pinch of salt!

6. Don’t stress about tips

Tipping is not the norm for most Spaniards, though some like to leave a euro or two. Understandably, this means that waiters don’t go the extra mile to please. If you are happy with the service, don’t be afraid to tip generously. When paying by card, you can ask taxi drivers and waiters to add the tip to the bill. 

7. Go ahead and bring the kids

Madrid is a child-friendly city. Restaurant owners go out of their way to accommodate children, and you’ll often be offered a high chair if you come with a toddler in tow. You can also find playgrounds scattered around the city beside bars with outdoor seating, where parents can have a grown-up drink while keeping an eye on their kids. Plaza de la Luna is particularly good for this. 

8. Spread the love

Spaniards love to gush over cute dogs and babies alike. So if you’re traveling with a child or a pooch, expect to get a lot of attention. Conversely, don’t be afraid to coo over other people’s adorable offspring/pets – part of the joy of visiting Madrid is striking up conversations with friendly locals. 

Madrileños are also really relaxed about PDA, and you’ll often see oblivious young lovers in intimate clinches. In the town center, gay couples can walk down the street hand in hand and kiss publicly without anyone batting an eyelid. 

9. Don’t take offense

Happily, Madrid doesn’t have the same problem with overtourism as Barcelona, though you might see angry graffiti railing against tourists in some areas. This is especially true in Lavapiés , which has been particularly badly hit by gentrification. If you’re worried about your impact on the local economy, avoid Airbnb. 

Generally you’ll find most businesses are pleased to deal with tourists. Don't be offended, however, if they don’t respond in English to your questions; while younger staff tend to be confident speakers, the older generation was not taught the language and can be shy to engage. They may well get over their reticence if you have a bash at some basic Spanish. 

10. Do take some safety precautions

Be wary of pickpockets on the metro: opportunistic thefts are common, and clueless tourists are a prime target.

As long as you keep an eye on your valuables, you should be fine to walk the city streets at any time of day or night. But be extra vigilant on the narrow sloping streets down towards Lavapiés, near Tirso de Molina metro and the tunnels by Plaza de los Cubos. There's been a spate of muggings targeting victims out alone and drunk late at night. 

Lastly, watch out for daylight robbery in restaurants and bars. Make sure you see a menu before going in. Bill padding is the most common scam here, and without a price list to check, you may find yourself losing out to unscrupulous establishments.  

11. Don't be afraid to drink the water

The first line of Madrid’s motto is, “I was built on water.” This is a reference to the abundant underground springs that used to bubble up underfoot. These may be long gone, but the excellent water pumped in from the nearby mountains is a source of pride to Madrileños. To me, it tastes much better than the bottled variety.
