What Are Singles Cruises for Seniors?

If you’re a senior who enjoys solo travel and meeting new people, you might want to book a singles cruise. These adventures can be a great way for older adults to enjoy traveling alone at surprisingly affordable prices. Beyond singles cruises, you can also look into general cruise lines that cater to the older set.

Pro Tip: To learn more about my favorite cruises, read my guide to the best cruises for seniors .

The Advantages of Singles Cruises for Seniors

Singles cruises for seniors offer many benefits, such as discounted room prices, wine tasting, and onboard entertainment –– not to mention plenty of opportunities to meet other singles.

Less planning

Since most singles cruises are all-inclusive, you don’t have to worry about last-minute itinerary planning. Most singles cruises provide a day-by-day itinerary with information on daily activities, events, and excursions. For those who want an adventurous time without having to plan, a cruise is a great option. Personally, planning travel makes me anxious, so I love handing the process over to the professionals.

Meeting new people

A singles cruise is designed to cater to people of all ages who are looking to meet new people. If you’re recently divorced or looking for a new relationship, a singles cruise offers an opportunity to meet others in a similar position. These cruises will often have programs like speed dating and dances to help facilitate interactions. Plus, some cruises cater to singles specifically, giving you a discount or “single supplement.”

Courses and events

Singles cruises offer plenty of great activities, such as wine tastings, chef-prepared meals, dancing, pool parties, concerts, and group exercises. All of this helps make it easier to meet new people.

1. Viking Ocean Cruises - Best Overall Value

What we like most:.

  • Wide range of trips
  • Luxurious suites
  • Excellent customer service
  • Risk-free guarantee

Cost: $799+ per person

Viking offers river, ocean, and expedition voyages on all seven continents. I could choose from a variety of cruise destinations, including Scandinavia, Northern Europe, Asia, and Australia. As the world’s leading small-ship cruise line, Viking Ocean Cruises has a fleet of new, state-of-the-art ocean ships, ranging from Viking Star to Viking Saturn. Each ocean ship can carry up to 930 adult guests for an intimate experience and longer overnight stays at ports. With so many adults on a boat, it was easy for me to meet people, especially at meal times.

To book a cruise, I simply visited the Viking website and selected the region, departure date, and duration of my stay. If you’re looking to travel to Scandinavia and Northern Europe for a duration of 12 days, you can choose your sail date and include a promo code to get the best deals. You can also select the number of guests and specify the type of stateroom or suite you would like to book.

Viking Ocean Cruises offers a risk-free guarantee for guests, allowing you to change your cruise date up to 14 days before your departure. Viking will also waive any change fees. Other features of this cruise include spacious veranda staterooms and suites. In addition to a variety of destinations, Viking Ocean Cruises offers special savings on both airfare and cruise costs.

FYI: Cruises aren’t the only way to meet that special someone. Consider trying one of the best dating websites for seniors .

2. Singles Travel International - Made for Singles

  • Made specifically for singles
  • Worldwide destinations
  • Meet-and-greets onboard

With affordable (comparatively speaking) cruises starting at $2,398 per person, Singles Travel International is a tour agency that offers fun cruise destination trips for single seniors over the age of 50. With several destination options ranging from Antarctica, Africa, and South America, seniors can enjoy a fun solo getaway at affordable prices.

With over 28 years in business, Singles Travel International offers great savings on single supplements, free membership, and fun singles cruise meet-and-greets and cocktail hours. Other benefits include an option to find a travel companion and ongoing promotions and discounts.  For example, when I was booking my trip, I could’ve saved thousands by getting a premium membership. This is a good option if you think you want to take cruises more regularly.

Plus, when I signed up for a free membership, I got a $50 discount on my first vacation and free access to its online community for senior singles over the age of 50.

3. Silversea - Luxurious and All-Inclusive

  • Made specifically for seniors
  • Generous all-inclusive options
  • Onboard spas and fitness centers
  • Gourmet dining

Cost: $3,600+ per person

If you’re looking to pamper yourself with a luxury cruise, Silversea provides amazing shore excursions and all-inclusive service covering 900 destinations. Although pricing is on the high side, you can still find plenty of great deals on both airfare and transfers. With Silversea, you can travel and explore new destinations like the Galapagos Islands, Asia, and Alaska –– all while enjoying the views from your luxury oceanview suite.

Booking as a solo traveler, I received a 25 percent single supplement on some voyages, which means a 25 percent discount. Not every cruise line offers this discount, as each room can support two people, typically.

You can choose from all-inclusive cruises or special Silversea Expeditions luxury cruises if you’re looking to travel to remote regions. Some of the benefits of choosing Silversea include complimentary beverages, gourmet dining, shore excursions, and educational lectures on the places you’re visiting. As someone who loves to learn, I found this trip both educational and fun, not to mention delicious.

With Silversea’s all-inclusive offerings, you’ll also enjoy personalized services with butler service for all its suites. Additionally, you’ll have access to a luxurious spa and fitness center, along with a beauty salon and acupuncture services for older adults with arthritis or back pain. It was lovely to have a spa to come home to after a long day exploring!

4. Tauck World Discovery - Great Expeditions

Tauck World Discovery

  • Extensive guided land tours
  • River and ocean cruises
  • Fine dining
  • Panoramic sun decks

Cost: $3,990+ per person

Looking for a solo getaway? Tauck World Discovery offers solo cruise adventures for older adults. Consider booking a solo trip on one of its European River Cruises, with prices starting at $4,390 per person for eight- to 25-day tours. In addition to river and small-ship cruises, Tauck offers guided land tours in destinations like Africa, Canada, Israel and Jordan, and Latin America.

We recommend solo travelers book one of the European River Cruises. For example, I was interested in the longest, Grand European Cruise, a 25-day cruise that hits Amsterdam, Budapest, Vienna, Nuremberg, Regensburg, and Koln. It starts at $13,990. I like this cruise because it will allow me to see nine European countries and stay three nights in Bucharest. Altogether, I am going to see these countries:

  • Netherlands

Other features and benefits of booking a cruise through Tauck is that you’ll enjoy unlimited complimentary beverages, fine dining, and amenities such as a fitness center, spa, and sun deck featuring panoramic views of the river. For the European River Cruises, some of the destinations include the Danube, Douro, and Rhone rivers.

5. Holland America Line - 35-Day Trips

Holland America Line

  • Trips up to 133 days long
  • Helpful smartphone app
  • Onboard casinos
  • Wine tastings

Cost: $499+ per person

With 149 years in business, Holland America Line offers 19 cruise destinations with over 473 ports. If you’re looking for an affordable cruise option, I recommend traveling with Holland America Line. Its Worry-Free Promise program gives guests the chance to change their cruise plans or cancel for any reason up to 30 days before departure if you or a travel party tests positive for COVID-19.

Holland America Line has a fleet of 11 classic ships with destinations and ports in Alaska, Europe, the Panama Canal, Asia, and more. You can choose from seven- to 133-day cruise trips, depending on your destination and travel needs. The longest cruise goes from pole to pole, leaving and departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. If you’re a single senior, you’ll love the amenities the cruise ship offers, such as classical cruise ship music, theatrical shows, concerts, and other live entertainment.

Some of the additional features of this cruise line include spacious suites and staterooms, along with unique dining options and a casino. You can also use its free mobile-friendly app to personalize your cruise experience and browse your planned activities for the day. Depending on the cruise ship you choose, you can also participate in wine tastings and cooking demonstrations.

Did You Know: Before you head for the sea, be sure to have your travel insurance in order.

6. Solos Holidays - Social Activities

Solos Holidays

  • Caters to solo travelers
  • Great onboard entertainment
  • Spacious rooms
  • Ample social activities

Cost: $261+ per person

Solos Holidays caters to solo travelers who enjoy going to exciting destinations while meeting new people. Based in London, this company focuses on “singles holidays” and offers a wide selection of destinations across the globe. Some of the cruise destinations include Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa.

I recommend going on A Taste of the Fjords. I departed from London and spent seven nights in Norway (prices start at $1,420 per person). On the ship, dining and entertainment options were plentiful, and the destinations — Bergen, Flam, and Stavanger —  were beautiful and picturesque. Plus, as a single, it was nice being with a group of eight and a tour leader, as I didn’t feel lonely. This is one of the more affordable cruise options, which is always appreciated.

7. Cunard - Great Onboard Entertainment

Cunard

  • Low starting prices
  • Orchestra performances
  • Onboard libraries and gyms
  • Planetarium shows

Cost: $699+ per person

Cunard provides luxury cruise services across the globe. In fact, in the past, it has had esteemed guests like Elizabeth Taylor and Charlie Chaplain onboard its ships. Depending on the type of vacation and travel experience you’re looking for, you can anticipate spending around $699 per person for an English cruise to up to $2,199 per person for a Caribbean cruise. This is incredibly affordable, as cruises can cost tens of thousands of dollars, which is not in my budget. Here are the prices I saw when I looked in October 2023:

When you book a cruise with Cunard, you’ll enjoy amenities such as afternoon tea, live orchestra performances, and events moderated by prolific speakers. In addition to spacious open decks and Broadway-style shows, seniors will enjoy a packed itinerary of events and activities.

Other features include twice-daily turndown services, concierge services, personal butlers, great dining options, and complimentary room service. Guests can also enjoy group dance classes, planetarium shows, and access to the library and gym facilities.

We recommend choosing one of its seven-day transatlantic cruises onboard its Queen Mary 2. The best part is you’ll have access to live performances from the Royal Shakespeare Company, along with various accommodations to make your stay enjoyable. Cruises start at $849 per person for a Christmas 2023 voyage.

8. Riviera River Cruises - Great for Solo Travelers

Riviera River Cruises

  • Luxurious amenities
  • Niche destinations
  • Flexible trips

Cost: $899+ per month

Riviera River Cruises offers several river cruises in Europe and other destinations around the world. Solo travelers can expect to pay around $899 to $5,479 for longer-duration trips.

If you enjoy solo traveling without sharing a room, then we’d recommend the Rhine, Strasbourg & Heidelberg River Cruise for Solo Travelers. This eight-day cruise starts at $2,449 per person and features eight guided tours, a live classical quartet recital, daily meals, and five-star services. For this particular cruise, you’ll embark in Cologne and visit destinations like the Rhine Gorge and the historic Mainz port. Plus, there are departures aimed at solo travelers specifically, which start at $2,749 per person. Unfortunately, there’s no single supplement, but there are also no additional fees; I paid the listed price, which was a welcome departure from other cruise lines and their many hidden fees.

When you choose Riviera River Cruises, you’ll enjoy amenities and features like daily morning and afternoon tea and coffee, along with full daily meals, complimentary Wi-Fi, and the option to extend your cruise. Other benefits include access to an expert cruise director and concierge services to help make for an enjoyable stay.

  • Great discounts
  • Spacious accommodations
  • Tours up to 21 days in length

Cost: $6,074+ per person

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers all-inclusive luxury travel around the world, with over 450 ports of call. Each ship can carry up to 750 guests, with destinations in Africa, Arabia, Alaska, Asia, and the Mediterranean. The average price with the single supplement ranges from $6,074 per person from Cape Town to Rio De Janeiro to as high as $12,562 for an 18-day cruise from Sydney to Singapore.

Not every cruise line offers discounted prices for singles, so although these prices are on the higher side, they’re a good option for singles who want a more luxurious experience and have the funds for it.

Some of the benefits of choosing a cruise from Regent Seven Seas Cruises include all-inclusive fares, free open bars, and unlimited beverages, along with free access to specialty restaurants. You’ll also receive free unlimited internet and up to a 50 percent discount for a reduced single supplement for select suite categories.

Exploring Cabin Options: Solo Cabins and Single Supplements

Navigating the cruising world as a single traveler often involves tackling single supplements and understanding the available cabin options. Single supplements are charges imposed by cruise companies on solo travelers when they occupy a double occupancy cabin alone, often making the cruising experience significantly more expensive.

However, many cruise lines have adapted to the rise of single travelers, offering solo cabins – accommodations specifically designed for one. These staterooms provide all the amenities of a standard cabin without the extra costs associated with double occupancy.

Companies like Norwegian Cruise Line have pioneered in this area, offering cozy, single-occupancy studio staterooms. Similarly, Celebrity Cruises presents single staterooms with private verandas for a blend of solitude and luxury. On Cunard, solo travelers can luxuriate in well-appointed Britannia single staterooms. Holland America Line even pairs solo travelers who wish to share a room.

Some cruises occasionally reduce or even waive single supplements on standard cabins, making solo cruising more affordable. Ultimately, these offerings provide solo cruisers more choices in cruise fare , allowing them to embark on their adventure without additional financial strain.

Navigating Dining and Social Events as a Solo Cruiser

Dining options on Norwegian cruise ship

Charting the course through the bustling dining scene and vibrant social events onboard a cruise ship as a solo cruiser is a voyage itself. Thankfully, cruises have made great strides in accommodating the unique needs and preferences of solo travelers.

For the culinary enthusiast, dining options on the high seas are plentiful and varied. Most cruise lines offer flexible dining plans that cater to singles who prefer dining alone or with the company. Be it a quiet dinner at a specialty restaurant on the Virgin Voyages or a group dinner with fellow solo travelers at the Test Kitchen, there’s a place setting for every palate.

In terms of social activities, cruise lines curate programs that foster connection and camaraderie. From wine tastings on Azamara to meet-and-greet parties on Celebrity Cruises, solo cruisers are provided myriad opportunities to mingle. Onboard activities such as culinary workshops on Holland America Line or music events on Norwegian Cruise Line serve as excellent ice-breakers.

Participation in such events isn’t mandatory but highly encouraged. After all, sharing experiences with fellow travelers can lead to friendships that last long after the voyage ends. Solo cruising isn’t just about sailing alone; it’s about becoming new friends, creating shared memories, embracing new experiences, and forging connections on the vast expanse of the ocean.

Safety Considerations for Solo Travelers

Safety Considerations for Solo Travelers

Embarking on a cruise as a solo traveler is a liberating experience, yet it calls for mindful considerations around personal safety. Especially for singles over the age group 50, the assurance of a secure journey goes hand in hand with enjoyment.

When cruising alone, it’s crucial to be conscious of your surroundings. Familiarize yourself with the ship’s layout early in the voyage, locate the emergency exits, and attend the mandatory safety drills. Maintain an open line of communication with family or friends back home and keep them informed about your itinerary.

Several other cruise lines also prioritize the safety of their solo guests. For instance, Silversea Cruises maintains a 1:1 staff-to-passenger ratio , ensuring personalized attention. Similarly, Cunard’s cruise line offers ‘gentleman dance hosts’ who are thoroughly vetted by the cruise line, providing a secure environment for solo women travelers interested in social dancing.

During shore excursions and river cruising, it’s wise to stick to the group or designated areas and respect the local customs and rules . Always remember, your safety lies in your hands; staying alert and informed contributes to a memorable and worry-free cruising experience.

Solo cruising offers singles over 50 more than just a vacation—it’s a journey of self-discovery. Cruise lines like Virgin Voyages and Silversea Cruises provide a variety of experiences tailored to individual tastes. Whether you’re into onboard activities, gourmet dining, or the solitude of a single cabin, there’s something for everyone.

Safety concerns are also mitigated through rigorous measures, allowing travelers to explore with ease. The real allure lies not in the destination, but in the experience—the ocean’s beauty, connections with fellow cruisers, and the joy of new hobbies create an unforgettable tapestry of travel. If you’re over 50 and single, your next adventure is just a port away.

Which cruise line is best for senior singles?

Choosing the perfect cruise for senior singles depends on personal tastes and activities. For those desiring luxury and intimacy, Silversea Cruises and Azamara stand out. Holland America Line offers a mature vibe and diverse activities, appealing to the 50-plus demographic. Alternatively, Virgin Voyages and Norwegian Cruise Line excel in solo-friendly amenities and single cabins, catering to socially active seniors.

Can you go on a cruise if you’re single?

Absolutely! Cruising as a single traveler is not only possible but can be a rewarding experience. Many cruise lines now offer accommodations, dining options, and activities specifically catered to solo travelers. Some provide solo traveler discounts to make cruising more affordable for single passengers. Whether you’re looking to meet new people, explore new places, or simply enjoy your own company, cruising as a single traveler offers a world of possibilities.

10 Best Cruises for Singles of All Ages

From expeditions to around-the-world voyages, these sailings are perfect for solo travelers.

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

best cruise lines for singles over 50

Traveling the world without having to pack and unpack multiple times is ideal. And on a cruise, that's a reality as you head from destination to destination on what is basically a moving luxury hotel (or a floating city, in some cases).

Being able to sleep in Bratislava and wake up in Budapest in five-star accommodations without having to drag all your stuff with you is as convenient as it is luxurious. But cruises aren't just for couples or families — they're great for singles as well.

Colleen McDaniel, the editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic , tells Travel + Leisure that cruises are a great place to meet new people. Some ships have single cabins, host parties for single passengers, or even waive the single supplement fee (river cruises tend to do that most often).

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line offers studio cabins for single travelers that include access to an exclusive lounge with complimentary espresso and snacks. "One of the benefits of sailing as a single is cruises are generally social. That's how they're designed," McDaniel says. "If you're somebody who's comfortable traveling by themselves and looks to make friends on vacation, there's no shortage of people you're going to meet."

But while younger travelers might want to hop around Europe and party every night, someone in their 50s may be interested in a longer cruise with opportunities for cultural immersion. Whatever your travel style, here are the best cruises for singles of any age.

Cruises for Singles in Their 20s

Cruises that last three to five nights are great for singles in their 20s, in part because they're less expensive, McDaniel says. If you do end up having to pay for a single supplement, "it's a little bit less of a hit to your wallet."

Cruise line Virgin Voyages offers exciting journeys aboard their ultra-instagrammable ship, Scarlet Lady . The four-night Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise from Miami is ideal for travelers in their 20s or 30s looking for a healthy mix of party and wellness.

Another great option is a three-day cruise to the Bahamas from Miami on Norwegian Sky . The ship was refurbished in 2019 and offers 10 dining options, a full-service Starbucks, and a casino for late-night bonding around the blackjack table with your new shipmates.

Cruises for Singles in Their 30s

According to McDaniel, cruisers in their 30s are likely looking for a good mix of "bustling nightlife and engaging in classes, but they also really want to explore and experience culture." She says river cruises that offer things like silent discos and paint-and-wine classes appeal to this age group.

Expedition cruise line Atlas Ocean does not charge a single supplement fee for certain staterooms on its luxury yachts, making it a great fit for solo travelers. The cruise line is known for its culturally immersive sailings, which include tours with local guides, artisanal workshops, and even drone photography classes. Consider the Folklore & Waterfalls cruise from Reykjavik to Dublin for a chance to capture jaw-dropping landscapes while meeting like-minded travelers.

Other travelers might want to opt for a South American adventure with National Geographic. The 10-day Upper Amazon river cruise aboard the Delfin II offers a chance to spot diverse wildlife within this impressive ecosystem.

Cruises for Singles in Their 40s

Upscale, bigger cruises on ships from Princess , Holland America , and Celebrity will likely appeal to cruisers in their 40s, McDaniel says. These cruises tend to be a bit more expensive, but "appeal because they have some really great excursions and might go off the beaten path. They're destination-immersive experiences."

The seven-night Galapagos Southern Loop on Celebrity Xpedition is one fantastic option. The Galapagos Islands are a great destination for solo travelers and this cruise is a solid way to see them. Search for sea turtles, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies during the day, and spend the evening in the ship's hot tub or take in one of the nightly lectures by certified naturalists from the Galapagos National Park.

A seven-day Mediterranean with Greek Isles and Turkey cruise aboard Princess Cruises' Sun Princess is an additional option for travelers hoping to see another part of the world best explored by ship.

Cruises for Singles in Their 50s

McDaniel says that a river cruise is a great option for someone in their 50s, with some lines waiving the single supplement fee and putting age restrictions on passengers (since you may not want little kids running around). Some companies, she notes, do a great job of hosting single mixers, which adds to the social experience. A cruise along the Danube or Rhine rivers is always a great choice, and there are several lines to choose from.

Sail along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers on Viking's Grand European Tour , which starts in Amsterdam and ends in Budapest. Along the way, the ship stops in charming towns and major European capitals for a well-rounded trip through continental Europe.

The twelve-day Cities of Light cruise , also from Viking River Cruises, carries passengers between Paris and Prague with several stops in Germany along the way. On board, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the sight of the cities slipping by.

Cruises for Single Seniors

A world cruise is a great option for seniors, McDaniel says, as they tend to have more free time. These cruises visit multiple countries over a longer period of time, and after a while, the boat feels like home.

"One of the great things about being a senior is you tend to have a far more flexible schedule," she says. "You also likely have a bit more disposable income."

The 133-day Grand Voyage Pole to Pole from Holland America Line offers a round-trip journey from Fort Lauderdale, covering Antarctica, South America, Europe, and Canada. Overnight stops include Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Lisbon, and Reykjavik, Iceland, among others.

Those looking to explore both the Eastern and Western Hemisphere might enjoy Cunard's 98-night New York to Southhampton cruise. The World Voyage aboard the Queen Anne includes stops in the Caribbean and Central America before crossing the International Date Line to Samoa, New Zealand, and Australia. The ship visits various countries in Asia, such as Vietnam and Malaysia, before heading to South Africa, Spain, and England. On a cruise this long, even the shiest solo traveler is bound to make a few friends.

Great singles cruises to book and meet fascinating people

Melinda Crow

Start humming the theme song to "The Love Boat" because we're going to do a deep dive into how to find the perfect singles cruises to book if you want to meet people.

Is it possible to meet your forever match on a cruise ship? Absolutely.

An editor I once knew found her true love on an expedition-style cruise. They married within months of returning home and now have two children. Whether it was the thrill of the expedition, the forced digital detox of a remote destination or the close quarters of a small ship, their relationship clearly blossomed on board.

Cruise ships offer a unique way to meet new and often fascinating people, whether you're looking for romance or simply want to enjoy the company of other people vacationing the same way you do.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

There are single cruisers on almost every ship. Some sail solo; others are in friend or family groups. Dining arrangements, onboard activities and port tours make meeting like-minded people easy. Also, it's socially acceptable to strike up conversations with others throughout the ship.

Some cruise lines make it even easier for singles to find each other with solo cabins clustered together and scheduled events for singles.

If you'd like to find companionship at sea, here are our top tips for making the most of a singles cruise.

Tips for making the most of a singles cruise

best cruise lines for singles over 50

As on dry land, activities are often the best way to meet people on a cruise. If you love to dance, go where the music is. If water sports are your thing, book a tropical cruise with a schedule of shore excursions that involve snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving and similar activities. Choose tours focused on wildlife watching, historical sites or food and beverage to meet shipmates who enjoy the same.

You'll often find other singles within shore excursion tour groups . However, you can increase your odds by joining social media groups specific to your cruise dates where you can connect pre-cruise with anyone cruising single.

In fact, there are dozens of social media groups dedicated to singles who love to cruise. Some groups focus on specific cruise lines, while others are broader in scope. Either way, they provide an easy opportunity to start a conversation with other singles before you ever set foot on the ship.

Your vessel's daily activity schedule is also a good place to find other singles. Check on the cruise line's app , on the interactive TV in your cabin or in the printed version (if there is one) for planned gatherings of singles, which are often pre-dinner meetups at bars.

A theme cruise is another way to meet people with similar interests. Sailings focus on country music, popular TV shows, wine tasting, crafting and other hobbies and interests. Not only will you likely find plenty of singles ready to mingle, but it might also be easier to strike up a conversation, knowing you have at least one thing in common.

Chartered singles cruises take the work out of finding other singles because you'll travel together in a group, often with a host to organize everyone. On larger ships, the charter will connect you with other group members through planned onboard meals, gatherings and activities. On smaller vessels, the tour company might charter the entire ship, so every passenger is single.

One word of caution here: It's easy to think that meeting someone on a cruise ship takes all the inherent danger out of hanging out with strangers. You're in a confined space surrounded by lots of other people. Sounds safe, right?

While cruising is, overall, incredibly safe, crime on board can happen. Like any form of travel, it's best not to let your guard down, especially if you go off alone with someone you've just met.

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when seeking other singles on cruise ships is to start with an appropriate cruise line for your age and lifestyle . Here are some great singles cruises for various age groups to help you get started.

Best cruises for singles over 20

best cruise lines for singles over 50

For young singles, cruising can sometimes feel like an expensive way to meet people. To avoid the high cost of single supplements charged to solo travelers in standard cabins meant for at least two people, single cruisers can travel with friends and share a room. (Many cabins can sleep up to four.) Also, you might feel more confident heading to the ship's bars or nightclubs in a group.

Try short three- to five-night cruises on low-cost mainstream lines like Carnival , Norwegian Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean , where you'll find more young adults and more of a party scene . Singles on a budget can also save money cruising on older, smaller ships across the mainstream fleets, which typically have lower cruise fares.

Margaritaville at Sea is another good choice for quick and affordable two-night trips to the Bahamas, though you'll need to find love quickly on such a short cruise.

Twentysomethings who have a larger travel budget and wish to cruise on their own can look for cruise lines with solo cabins. These rooms for one are in limited supply, so they can be priced at a premium and sell out quickly.

Our top pick for this age group would be a short Carnival cruise from almost any U.S. departure port.

The price is right, there's plenty of onboard fun designed for this age group (great live bands, nightly karaoke, poolside games, trivia and deck parties). It's also a good way to get your feet wet when it comes to cruising as a young single. Carnival ships have many cabins that can sleep several of your besties if you choose not to go alone.

Cruising singles in their 30s have slightly different vacation needs from their younger peers. Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Carnival are all still great choices for this age group, whether you're traveling on your own or with a group of friends.

Another cruise line that works well for young singles is Virgin Voyages , which is child-free and has rooms and activities designed for singles. Its cheeky, nontraditional vibe is a plus for thirtysomethings.

Use the tattoo you got at the onboard tattoo studio as a conversation starter, make friends at an '80s-themed workout class, or chat up your neighbor at an after-hours cabaret or at a communal table in one of the line's many complimentary restaurants.

Single parents who vacation with their youngsters might want to add Disney Cruise Line to the list. The kids can enjoy amazing supervised programming in the expansive kids club while mom or dad enjoys adult pleasures like wine tastings, fine dining and dancing — all of which could lead to meetups with other single parents on board.

A warm-climate Royal Caribbean cruise with your best buds can be an ideal option for the over-30 set. We recommend one of the line's newest and biggest ships so you have plenty of options for food, entertainment and hangouts to try. From slides and water attractions that get your heart racing to dance clubs open until the wee hours of the night, these ships have plenty to offer young singles and plenty of places to meet new friends.

Singles in their 40s generally are ready for a little less party and a little more romance on a singles cruise. This age group won't be out of place among festive singles on board Virgin Voyages or Carnival, but Celebrity Cruises is another cruise line to consider.

The line's newer Edge Class ships have a younger, hipper ambience than their older ships. Think martini bars, foodie havens and jazz clubs, all with decor that looks nothing like your parents' cruise ships.

For those who like to gamble, try the mainstream cruise lines. The large casinos offer yet another opportunity to meet other singles on board — particularly at the table games. Margaritaville at Sea is another line to consider with plenty of gambling singles on board.

For fortysomething singles looking for onboard romance, we suggest a studio cabin for seven nights on NCL's new Norwegian Viva bound for the Caribbean . There's plenty to do on board and in port to help you meet people.

Additionally, the solo cabins, which have been redone in a more elegant style than on some of the line's older ships, provide access to the Studio Lounge for socializing. The lounge has also been revamped, giving it an upscale feel with free daily snacks and drinks. (Note that Norwegian's cabins for one sell out quickly, so you'll want to book early.)

Another great pick would be Virgin Voyages' four-night Fire and Sunset Soiree sailings from Miami on Scarlet Lady . They include stops at Key West and a private beach club on Bimini , plus a sea day to get to know your fellow passengers. The cost for a single "sailor," as Virgin calls them, starts at around $700.

For senior singles cruises, all the previous options are still reasonable choices. However, some lines cater a bit more to this age group. The caveat is that cruise lines that cater to mature travelers are often targeted at couples, with solo travelers skewing older.

Oceania , Azamara and Holland America are tops on this list, especially on their shorter cruises that attract still-working professionals. The ships are large enough to have a mix of singles among the usual crowd of couples but small enough to provide a strong chance of actually meeting those other singles on board.

These lines offer port-intensive itineraries, so book ship tours to connect with like-minded folks on board since you likely won't spend as much time lounging around the pool.

For singles over 50, a Celebrity Cruises itinerary in the Mediterranean will likely include many other singles with whom you can mingle. Mediterranean cruises are popular with active mid-lifers looking to see more of the world. What could be more romantic than cruising the Greek Isles or the Italian coastline?

Best cruises for singles over 60

best cruise lines for singles over 50

Single retirees with the freedom to enjoy longer and often more expensive cruises have loads of options for meeting people. The list starts with premium lines like Holland America, Oceania and Cunard , but also Viking and Princess Cruises .

Single travelers in their 60s and older with a large travel budget should consider luxury cruise lines like Seabourn Cruise Line , Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises . All of these cater to singles with reduced supplement charges and singles meet-and-greets.

Visit the maitre d' on the first day of your cruise to ensure you are seated at the same table or group of tables with other singles for dinner in the main dining room. Dance classes, trivia games and port tours also put you in the right place at the right time to strike up conversations with others looking to make new connections. Social hostesses on luxury lines can introduce you to other solo travelers, too.

Related: Why it's easier to meet new people on a smaller cruise ship

River cruises in Europe are another possibility for singles in this age group. River cruises are inherently social, in part because of the small size of the ships, but also because daily tours put people with shared interests in proximity during walking and bus excursions. There are also choices of specialty theme cruises for LGBTQ+ cruisers , wine lovers, golfers and ancestry seekers, all of which make it easier for singles to meet people on board.

Lines to consider include AmaWaterways , Viking River Cruises, Avalon River Cruises, Emerald Cruises and Uniworld River Cruises. River cruises also sometimes offer reduced single supplements, making them more affordable for those traveling alone.

A top pick for this age group would be an Alaska sailing on Silversea Cruises. This luxury line includes everything in one fare — even many fabulous Alaska excursions you would pay hundreds of dollars for on any other line. The ships are small enough that you can easily meet your fellow travelers, and the excursions make it easy to share experiences with other singles on board.

Bottom line

The romance of a cruise is undeniable. From dressy dinners to the moon's glow on the ocean waves, cruising can feel like a setting straight from a Hollywood film. Though not as simple as swiping right, cruising to meet other singles has appeal.

Choosing the right cruise line and activities can help you narrow your potential candidates. Looking for an outdoor adventurer? Choose active tours in port. Want to share your love of music, wine or Blackjack with someone? Pick a theme cruise focused on your passion.

If you just want to dance the night away with singles in your own age group, there's a ship for you — whether your jam is rock 'n' roll, hip hop or a classic waltz.

Also, you lose nothing by trying. Even if you don't meet the partner of your dreams, you'll enjoy a fantastic cruise vacation.

An Alaskan cruise offers a unique and unforgettable experience, providing travelers with a chance to explore some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes on Earth.  Alaska is renowned for its awe-inspiring scenery, including majestic glaciers, towering snow-capped mountains, pristine fjords, and abundant wildlife. Senior singles cruises to Alaska’s Inside Passage allow you to witness this breathtaking beauty from the comfort of your ship. During your cruise, you may have the opportunity to spot humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, bald eagles, bears, and other fascinating creatures in their natural habitats. If you are looking for a singles cruise with a high level of comfort and luxury, Alaska is a great choice.

River cruises are also fantastic options for lone travelers. These ships offer a relaxed and enriching way to explore destinations along picturesque rivers, making them an excellent option for solo travelers seeking a friendly, inclusive, and culturally immersive travel experience. In addition, river cruises typically accommodate a smaller number of passengers compared to ocean cruises, creating a more intimate and friendly atmosphere. This makes it easy for solo travelers to interact with fellow passengers and form connections. Another benefit is for those concerned about getting seasick. Singles river cruises navigate calmer waters, avoiding the possibility of illness that can occur on ocean cruises.

Mediterranean Cruises

Mediterranean cruises offer an exciting and enriching travel experience, allowing older solo travelers to explore the stunning and culturally diverse regions surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. These cruises visit a wide range of captivating ports in countries such as Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Turkey, France, and many more. Each destination offers its unique history, culture, and culinary delights, providing ample opportunities for exploration and enrichment.  Develop friendships with others who share a similar thirst for this type of culturally enriching experience. When selecting a Mediterranean cruise for older adults traveling alone, consider the cruise itinerary, the duration of the trip, the cruise line’s amenities and offerings, and any specific interests or activities that you would like to experience during the journey for a memorable and fulfilling travel experience, offering a mix of relaxation, cultural enrichment, and exciting adventures.

Caribbean Cruises

Singles Caribbean cruises provide absolutely amazing experiences. From thrilling shore excursions exploring the beauty of tropical islands to onboard events like dance parties, karaoke nights, and themed gatherings – there’s never a dull moment. And you’ll have many opportunities to interact with the other passengers. Not only is a Caribbean cruise safe and convenient, but it also offers you the chance to relax and unwind amidst stunning ocean views. You can soak up the sun by the pool, indulge in rejuvenating spa treatments, or take part in invigorating fitness classes – all designed to make your journey a blissful escape.

A cruise to Bahamas is a particularly popular destination. Other wonderful locations often visited on Caribbean cruises include Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Ocho Rios, St. Thomas, St. Marteen/St. Martin, Barbados, Antigua, St. Lucia, and Puerto Rico. The specific destinations and ports of call on a Caribbean cruise vary depending on the cruise line, ship, and itinerary. Find the journey that best fits your vision of a dream vacation and provides opportunities to do what you want to do whether it is sightseeing, hiking, snorkeling, or relaxing on the beach. You can look forward to making lifelong friends and having an unforgettable adventure when you book a Caribbean cruise!

Which Cruise Lines Offer Trips for Singles Over 50?

Many cruise lines offer trips for singles over 50. Royal Caribbean, Viking, Princess, Norwegian, Silversea, and Holland America cruise lines are the most popular options. We left Carnival Cruise Line off the list because they seem to cater more to singles in their 20s and 30s as of this writing.

Some people hesitate to travel alone, but when you choose to cruise, the cruise line takes care of almost all of the planning. All you need to do is book the cruise, show up on time, and enjoy the journey! Singles cruises are often on more luxurious ships and may offer roommate matching services or cabins specifically designed for solo cruisers. Here are some of the cruise lines that we recommend if you’re looking for cruises for unattached individuals over 50:

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

While popular with families, the Royal Caribbean cruise line also offers wonderful options for seniors traveling alone. They offer a wide variety of onboard activities, entertainment options, and excursions providing excellent opportunities for solo travelers to meet new people.

The best Royal Caribbean senior singles cruises for you likely will depend on your age or the age of the passengers you prefer mixing with.  For example, an excellent cruise option for senior singles is the Royal Caribbean Radiance Class. With a smaller ship size, passengers enjoy a more personalized and intimate experience. This offers great opportunities to connect with fellow travelers. And despite its smaller size, the Radiance Class still provides all the signature features this cruise line is known for such as exceptional entertainment, luxurious accommodations, and excellent dining options. There are four ships in the Radiance Class: Brilliance of the Seas, Jewel of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, and Serenade of the Seas. All offer solo cabins, though these may not be the least expensive accommodations on the ship.

Princess Cruise Line

With Princess Cruises , it’s never too late to embark on an unforgettable journey. Whether you prefer domestic adventures or international experiences, traveling on Princess solo cruises will provide a journey you always dreamed about. For onboard mingling, Princess plans singles-only nights with music and dancing that provide ample opportunity to connect with other travelers. They also offer tennis courts and yoga classes, so passengers traveling alone can meet new friends while working up a sweat, as well as cooking classes and wine tastings. Off the ship, the comfortable and well-planned shore excursions provide yet another avenue to meet like-minded people on your cruise.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruises provide plenty of fabulous options to plan your cruise vacation. It used to cost a small fortune if you wanted to cruise solo as you had to pay the double occupancy cost to bunk in a stateroom by yourself. Norwegian offers award-winning studio staterooms where no single supplement applies. In fact, they were the first cruise line to build staterooms and common areas specifically for the single cruiser. The studios are the perfect size for solo cruising. Norwegian cruises for unattached seniors go to interesting destinations all over the world. And there is an abundance of opportunities to meet fellow passengers. For example, they offer their “Studio Lounge”, which is a great way to meet other single cruisers. And most sailings have singles meet-ups for those cruising alone.

Holland America Cruise Line

Holland America cruises are popular with solo travelers. The average passenger age on this cruise line is the mid-60s, and they cater to this age group, offering plenty of onboard activities such as yoga, wine tastings, culinary programs, singles mixers, dance lessons, and more. They also provide opportunities for exceptional offboard activities and excursions. Holland America is particularly good for solo travelers to its “Singles Partners Program” which provides over 40 activities dedicated to solo guests. They also provide a “Share a Room” option which travelers can opt into. Certain ships on this cruise line, such as the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam, offer single cabins.

Silversea Cruise Line

Silversea cruises  are yet another great choice for solo travelers. This cruise line is known for its social atmosphere and all exclusive luxury. Though they do not have specifically dedicated solo cabins, they do offer regular deals aimed at older adults cruising alone. The smaller size of the Silversea ships allows for a more intimate setting than you might find with a larger ship. Silversea has a relatively high percentage of solo travelers who are open to getting to know new people and participating in activities together.

Viking Cruise Line

Viking Ocean Cruises attract mostly an over 50 clientele, and this cruise line tailors experiences to this demographic. The luxurious ships are on a smaller scale, with only 930 passenger capacity. Designed with sophisticated decor and inclusive value, your cruise fare includes everything including excursions and specialty dining and tips. Viking cruises for senior singles offer plenty of opportunities to mix and mingle with other passengers. Keep your eyes open for their special deals where there are no single supplements on selected ocean and river sailings.

When choosing a cruise line, consider factors such as the itinerary, onboard amenities, dining options, and the atmosphere that best suits your preferences and interests as a single senior traveler.

What to Look for in a Cruise Line for Single Seniors

When single seniors are choosing a cruise line, several factors must be considered to ensure an enjoyable and comfortable experience.

Solo Cabins

Some cruise lines offer cabins designed specifically for solo travelers. These can be more affordable than paying a single supplement on a regular double cabin. Check if the cruise line provides these and what the associated costs are.

Single Supplements

Many cruise lines charge a single supplement fee, which can sometimes be up to 100% of the cabin cost. Look for cruise lines that offer reduced or no single supplement fees, which can make cruising more affordable for solo travelers.

Age Demographic

Choose a cruise line that caters to a mature audience or offers specific cruises for seniors. This can enhance your social experience, providing you with opportunities to meet other travelers in your age group.

Onboard Activities and Programs

Look for ships that offer programs and activities suited to your interests. Enrichment programs, lectures, workshops, cultural tours, and gentle physical activities are popular among senior travelers.

Social Opportunities

Some cruise lines organize events specifically for solo travelers, such as welcome receptions or group dining options. These can help you meet other solo travelers and create a sense of community on board.

Itinerary and Duration

Consider the length of the cruise and the destinations. Some seniors prefer longer cruises that visit multiple or exotic locations, while others might prefer shorter, more relaxed itineraries.

Accessibility and Medical Facilities

Check the ship’s accessibility features, especially if you have mobility challenges. Also, ensure that there are medical facilities onboard, which is crucial for older travelers.

Dining Options

Flexible dining options, including open seating and multiple venues, are important to seniors. Some appreciate gourmet dining experiences, while others might prefer more casual options.

Ship Size and Amenities

The size of the ship can impact your experience. Smaller ships often provide a more intimate and less crowded experience, which might appeal to those who prefer a quieter environment. Larger ships might offer more amenities and activities.

Cost and Inclusions

Finally, consider what is included in the price of your cruise. Some luxury lines offer all-inclusive pricing that covers meals, beverages, and even excursions, which can be very convenient and help manage your budget.

  • High-Quality Dining – With a variety of dining options including partnerships with Relais & Châteaux, Silversea offers exceptional culinary experiences that are included in the cruise fare.

  • Less Varied Nightlife and Entertainment – Compared to larger ships, the entertainment onboard is more subdued, focusing more on enrichment than on high-energy shows or parties.
  • Older Ships – Some of the ships are older, which might not appeal to those looking for the latest onboard technologies or brand-new facilities, although they are well-maintained and luxurious.

Best Adult-Only Cruise Line – Viking Cruises

Viking Ocean Cruises is known for its modern, elegant ships and emphasis on cultural enrichment and destination-focused itineraries. It maintains an adults-only policy, which provides a calm atmosphere, particularly appealing to those seeking a quiet and sophisticated cruise experience.

  • High-Quality, Varied Dining Options – Viking’s cuisine is widely praised. It features ingredients sourced from destinations along the itinerary and multiple dining venues that are all included in the cruise fare.
  • Limited Entertainment Options – The entertainment onboard Viking is more low-key, lacking the large-scale shows or casino facilities found on bigger cruise ships, which might not appeal to those seeking a vibrant nightlife.
  • Higher Price Point – While offering considerable value through its inclusive pricing, Viking’s upfront cost can be higher than some other cruise lines, which might be a deterrent for budget-conscious travelers.

Its commitment to a refined cruise experience makes it ideal for those seeking a peaceful and enriching vacation on the seas.

Key Features of Holland America Line

  • Mid-sized Ships – HAL’s ships are designed to be larger than boutique vessels but smaller than mega-ships, striking a balance that allows for a more intimate feel without sacrificing amenities. This size allows for easier navigation of the ship and a more personal level of service.
  • Enrichment Programs and Activities – Holland America places a strong emphasis on cultural enrichment and lifelong learning, offering culinary demonstrations in the Culinary Arts Center modeled after the setup of a broadcast kitchen, digital workshops powered by Windows, and BBC Earth Experiences presentations. • Excellent Service – Known for attentive and high-quality service, the staff on HAL’s ships ensure that each guest feels cared for and valued. This is particularly appealing to older adults who appreciate recognition and personal interaction.
  • Quieter Nightlife – Those looking for vibrant nightlife might find HAL’s entertainment offerings a bit subdued. The nightlife focuses more on relaxation and conversation rather than high-energy parties or late-night dance clubs.
  • Decor and Amenities May Feel Dated – Some passengers feel that the ships, while elegant, could benefit from updates and renovations to match the more modern amenities found on newer ships from competing lines.

Best Over 50 – Saga Cruises

Saga Cruises is a British-based cruise line that specifically caters to travelers aged 50 and over, making it an ideal choice for mature adults and single seniors seeking a comfortable and enjoyable cruise experience tailored to their interests.

Saga Cruises provides an excellent option for single seniors and older travelers who appreciate an environment that caters exclusively to their age group. With a focus on comfort, accessibility, and tailored activities, Saga ensures a relaxed and enriching cruise experience in a friendly, like-minded community atmosphere.

Key Features of Saga Cruises

  • Age-Specific Cruising – Saga Cruises requires at least one guest per cabin to be aged 50 years or older, with a companion over the age of 40 if not traveling solo. This age policy ensures that the onboard experience, activities, and entertainment are specifically tailored to the preferences of mature adults.
  • Smaller Ship Size – Saga’s fleet consists of smaller ships, which not only allows access to less-trafficked ports of call but also facilitates a more personal and less crowded experience onboard. This setup enhances the quality of service and allows for easier socializing among passengers.

  • Comprehensive Medical Support – Understanding the needs of its demographic, Saga ships are well equipped with medical facilities, and there are qualified medical professionals onboard to handle any health-related issues that may arise.
  • Designed for Accessibility – The ships and their programs are designed with accessibility in mind, which is a crucial consideration for seniors. Facilities are easily navigable for those with mobility issues, and special accommodations can be arranged as needed.
  • Limited Ship and Itinerary Choices – Being a smaller cruise line, Saga offers fewer ships and itineraries compared to larger global operators. This might limit options for those looking for more exotic or varied routes.
  • British Focus –  With a primarily British passenger base and operations, the onboard culture, entertainment, and food might be heavily UK-centric, which might not appeal to non-British travelers looking for a more international experience.

Whether choosing the luxurious intimacy of Silversea, the culturally immersive Viking Ocean Cruises, the traditional elegance of Cunard, the enriching environments of Holland America, or the senior-specific offerings of Saga Cruises, each line provides unique advantages that cater to mature adults. These cruise lines prioritize comfort, accessibility, and refined entertainment, ensuring that single seniors can enjoy a fulfilling and hassle-free voyage.

This was a really informative blog. Thank you. I am quite new to cruising but have been on 4 in the past year. I always choose an inside cabin as I have the same facilities as everyone else, but for about half the price (another cruise!). Out of the four cruises, three had no single supplement at all. One was on P and O and two on MSC, so it is always worth looking around x

Choosing the Best Cruise for Singles over 50

When it comes to finding the perfect cruise experience for singles over 50, there are several types of cruises that cater to different interests and preferences.

In this section, we will explore three popular cruise options: River Cruises, Alaska Cruises, and Theme Cruises.

River Cruises

River cruises offer a more intimate and immersive experience compared to traditional ocean cruises. Solo travelers can enjoy the beauty and culture of cities along famous rivers like the Rhine and Danube.

Some river cruise lines, such as Avalon Waterways and AmaWaterways, are known to waive or significantly lower single supplement charges, making them attractive options for singles over 50.

River cruises provide opportunities for solo travelers to:

  • Explore historic cities and charming towns along the riverbanks
  • Participate in guided walking tours and tastings at local vineyards
  • Enjoy onboard enrichment programs and lectures related to the cruise’s destination

Alaska Cruises

Navigating Single Supplements and Special Offers

Navigating single supplements and special offers can quickly become overwhelming when trying to identify the best cruise for singles over 50.

However, there are a number of cruise lines that either reduce single supplements or waive them altogether for solo travelers.

Reduced single supplements can make a significant difference in the cost of a cruise for solo travelers. Luxury cruise lines like Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas, and Silversea cater to singles by offering reduced supplement charges and singles meet-and-greets.

These cruise lines provide their guests with a unique experience, as they sail to over 900 destinations and focus on a more intimate atmosphere.

In addition to reduced single supplements, some cruise lines offer single partners program . A single partners program allows solo travelers to share a cabin with another guest of the same gender, which can make the cruise even more affordable.

This also provides an opportunity for travelers to meet like-minded individuals and form friendships during their journey.

River cruise lines are another popular choice for solo cruisers, as they often feature low or no single supplements. Companies such as AmaWaterways, Tauck, and Uniworld provide attractive options for singles over 50 who are interested in river cruises.

Tauck even eliminates its single supplement completely on its least-expensive cabins and reduces single supplements for other categories, with savings up to $1,000 in select categories.

When searching for the best cruise deals for singles over 50, it is wise to keep an eye out for special offers and promotions that cater to this demographic. These may include exclusive solo traveler events, group excursions, or onboard activities specifically tailored for individuals traveling alone.

By doing thorough research and comparing various cruise lines’ single supplement policies and special offers, singles over 50 can find an enjoyable and budget-friendly cruising experience.

Life on Board: Activities and Experiences

One of the most enjoyable activities for singles over 50 on a cruise is participating in dance classes. These classes cater to various skill levels, so even beginners can join in the fun. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn new dance styles like ballroom, salsa, or tango while meeting new people and staying active.

Wine Tastings

Cruise lines often organize wine tastings, which offer a relaxed and informative setting for singles to socialize. These events typically feature a range of wines from different regions, providing a chance for passengers to expand their palate while engaging in conversations with fellow travelers.

Wine tastings cater to various levels of wine knowledge, providing something for everyone to enjoy.

Fitness Activities

For those who prioritize maintaining their health and fitness, most cruise ships have well-equipped fitness centers onboard. Additionally, several fitness activities, such as yoga classes, Pilates, and aerobics, are available that cater to the needs of singles over 50.

9 bucket list cruises for seniors and retirees.

These cruise lines appeal to older travelers with adults-only sailings, accessible staterooms and more.

Cruises for Seniors and Retirees

Make the memories of a lifetime on a cruise for seniors and retirees.

Cruises are an often dreamt-about retirement goal, especially for long-time cruise lovers who have always been short on time. Retirement can be the ideal season of life to sail off into the sunset for several weeks, whether to far-off lands like Antarctica or a peaceful journey down the Danube. In some cases, seniors embrace their golden years by booking epic, monthslong voyages around the world.

Many small- and medium-sized ships cater to the over-60 crowd, but that doesn't mean guests will be relegated to shuffleboard and bingo games. Today's seniors still have plenty of adventures to experience and memories to make, both on board and on shore. The following cruise lines offer the top bucket list sailings for seniors and retirees.

Windstar Cruises

Uniworld boutique river cruises, oceania cruises, holland america line, cunard line, aurora expeditions.

Anyone who has ever fancied a near-private yacht-style cruise experience will love the vibe of Windstar Cruises. Each of its yachts holds between 148 and 342 guests, with a 1-to-1.5 crew-to-guest ratio. This makes for more intimate sailings – not only because there's simply less ship to maneuver on foot, but also because Windstar ships have access to ports that megaships aren't permitted to enter. The end result is the unique ability to explore lesser-known destinations and smaller cities. While Windstar is not a strictly adults-only cruise line , you won't see any little ones on board, either. Children must be at least 8 years old to sail on the line, which further adds to the high-end ambiance.

In 2021 and 2022, Windstar's Star Breeze, Star Pride and Star Legend ships received a refresh. The three all-suite yachts were cut in half and enhanced with new suites and amenities, bringing the capacity to 312 passengers on each vessel. These Star Plus Class ships also boast new restaurants, a reimagined spa and fitness center, and more efficient engines, among other improvements. Elevators help make the Star Plus Class ships more accessible for anyone with limited mobility (note that Wind Class ships Wind Star and Wind Spirit do not have elevators). Additionally, Star Breeze, Star Pride and Star Legend each have four wheelchair-accessible suites, which feature a smaller queen bed and reduced "wheel around" space.

On board, passengers can drop by the Open Bridge anytime for an impromptu lesson in chart reading, listen to live music in the Lounge or jump directly into the water from the Watersports Platform. Culinary highlights include restaurant Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso, which serves a twist on modern Spanish cuisine by the 10-time Michelin-starred chef, as well as culinary shore excursions with hands-on cooking classes and chef-led market tours to explore fresh local ingredients.

The cruise industry is abuzz with interest in one of Windstar's newest itineraries, which introduces passengers to the Middle East. The Inaugural Sparkling Sands & Cities itinerary sets sail in November 2023, visiting Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates; Doha, Qatar; and Muscat, Oman, among others. Foodies will be especially interested in the James Beard Foundation's Sparkling Sands & Cities of the Persian Gulf itinerary, scheduled to embark in February 2024. Windstar's other destinations include Asia, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the South Pacific and more.

Spanning seven continents via river, ocean and expedition vessels, Viking is considered a quintessential high-end cruise experience. For more than 25 years, it has provided destination-focused sailings designed to allow its guests to explore the world in supreme comfort. Its voyages particularly appeal to travelers older than 50 who are interested in science, history, culture and cuisine.

Every Viking cruise fare includes a complimentary shore excursion in each port of call, onboard meals, beer and wine (with lunch and dinner service), Wi-Fi access, and all port charges and government taxes. On Viking's ocean and expedition vessels, guests also enjoy complimentary self-service laundry, access to the Thermal Suite in The Spa, high tea service, alternative restaurant dining and 24-hour room service. But the best part for older cruisers may be what's not included on Viking sailings: kids. This adults-only cruise line is dedicated to guests 18 and older.

Viking's fleet – with capacities ranging from 80 to 998 passengers (on river and ocean cruises, respectively) – feature elegant Scandinavian-style decor. The small ship cruises get closer to their destinations, spend more time in port and include more overnight stays, too.

One of Viking's newest ocean vessels, the all-veranda Viking Saturn, debuted in 2023 and focuses on European sailings. Its 10-day Empires of the Mediterranean route from Venice to Athens is particular popular, with stops in Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Greece. Another in-demand route is the Danube Christmas Delights itinerary on the Viking Longships, which visits enchanting villages, cultural capitals and iconic Christmas markets for a festive holiday cruise .

To suit their needs, guests can choose between different activity levels for walking tour-focused shore excursions. For bibliophiles, The Library on each ship is curated by acclaimed London bookshop Heywood Hill, as well as Cambridge University's Scott Polar Research Institute on the expedition vessels. Viking also holds exclusive partnerships with prestigious scientific institutions, which makes it possible for at least 36 experts – including field research scientists, mountain guides, submarine pilots and other specialists – to accompany passengers on each expedition journey.

A pavlova dessert served on board Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Uniworld ships are akin to floating boutique hotels, designed to reflect the destinations in which they sail – a vast list that includes ports in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. The Aquamar Spa on Oceania Cruises

Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

Seniors with a penchant for epicurean delights tend to gravitate toward Oceania Cruises for their cruise vacations – it's known for having one of the finest culinary programs at sea. This cruise line focuses on small ship luxury, with seven ships currently in service carrying between 670 and 1,250 passengers each. An eighth ship, Allura, is set to debut in 2025.

Newer ships like the Vista – the first of the Allura class vessels, which joined the fleet in May 2023 – have wheelchair-accessible rooms and a plethora of onboard culinary venues. A few highlights include Aquamar Kitchen, offering an array of wellness-inspired dishes; The Bakery at Baristas, serving freshly baked pastries; and new signature restaurant Ember, an upscale American eatery. Don't miss the Cellar Master's Wine Luncheon: a two-hour, hand-selected tasting led by the head sommelier that features a five-course menu paired with premium wines for each dish.

Senior cruisers will enjoy the Aquamar Spa's signature massage therapies, which use natural ingredients and modern techniques to release stress and tension. The Vitality Center offers a steam room, a thalassotherapy pool and heated lounge beds for extra relief. Holland America Line's Westerdam ship sails through Yakutat Bay in Alaska

Courtesy of Holland America Line

As a premium, midsize cruise line, Holland America Line offers plenty of destinations, excursions and activities aligned to an older audience. The smaller ship size, which averages around 2,000 passengers per sailing, allows for many of the ships to dock in ports that are inaccessible to larger ships, getting passengers even closer to the destinations they're visiting. For older passengers who may have limited mobility, the option to simply disembark the ship without waiting for a tender or other means of transportation can make or break a trip.

Holland America Line, though family-friendly, offers myriad excursions that are primarily adult-oriented and open to all types of adventurers. Shore excursions are clearly marked with an activity level ranging from easy to strenuous, from leisurely wine tastings and relaxing strolls through ancient towns to ATV rides through the jungle and dog-sledding on a glacier only accessible via helicopter.

Onboard entertainment and activities are plentiful; guests often enjoy the multiple music lounges and venues on each ship, along with hosted programs such as bingo and trivia. For seniors who can't get enough of the pickleball trend, Holland America Line has partnered with the Professional Pickleball Association to bring branded courts and equipment on board. After all that action on the court, unwind in the Greenhouse Spa & Salon with a rejuvenating treatment. (Pro tip: Add on the Thermal Suite for access to the healing hydrotherapy circuit and heated, tiled loungers that will melt all your cares away.)

The numerous onboard dining options bring together cuisines and flavors from all over the world, with specialty restaurants featuring menus developed by a team of master chefs known as Holland America's Culinary Council. In addition to casual dining in the Lido Market and multicourse affairs in The Dining Room, each ship also features the Pinnacle Grill, an onboard steakhouse offering high-end meats and seafood. Other specialty restaurants vary by ship and may include Italian eatery Canaletto and the French-inspired Rudi's Sel de Mer.

Holland America Line sails all over the world. It does an especially nice job with its Greek island cruises and Adriatic Sea adventures. One of the line's newest ships, Rotterdam , is a crowd-pleaser with its sleek design details and an onboard art collection valued at more than $4.1 million. Still, longtime favorites like the refurbished Oosterdam and Eurodam host plenty of happy guests.

Cunard Line's ocean liners have sailed between the U.K. and New York since 1840 – and the brand's relationship with the British monarchy is integral to its heritage. As such, each ship is named after a British queen. The newest ship, Queen Anne, joins the fleet in 2024.

In keeping with its history, Cunard Line has several signature experiences that help set the brand apart. Afternoon tea is a Cunard tradition observed daily in the Queen's Room; expect white-gloved waiters serving scones and finger sandwiches alongside infused teas in silver teapots (add Champagne for an additional fee). During gala evenings, guests don tuxedos and ballgowns for a sophisticated celebration you won't soon forget. Scott Portelli | Courtesy of Aurora Expeditions

Nothing says "once-in-a-lifetime" quite like embarking on an expedition to the world's most remote destinations – and, specifically, to Antarctica. For cruisers looking to explore this far-off land, Aurora Expeditions is one of the most trusted names in the industry. Founded by legendary adventurer Greg Mortimer, the brand sends an education-focused expedition team on each voyage, with a ratio of about one team member per every eight passengers. With an average of just 132 cruisers on these sailings, you'll get more one-on-one time with your expedition team.

Seniors can climb aboard Aurora Expeditions' Greg Mortimer or Sylvia Earle ship for innovative itineraries to the Great White Continent. When the ship isn't pausing to watch breaching whales, passengers can kayak between icebergs, visit penguin colonies or take guided hikes across the tundra. Aurora describes its cruises as "100% climate neutral," with a commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

All of Aurora Expeditions' voyages let travelers explore at their own pace, making it a great option for all ages. There are many included activities on each expedition, such as bird-watching, photography, lectures on wildlife, Zodiac cruises and near-shore excursions. The line will even outfit you with Muck boots and waterproof polar jackets. The entire voyage is laid-back, with an informal dress code.

On board, all cabins have a view of the ocean, and most have their own balcony. Tips are included in the cost of your cruise, and guests can enjoy a complimentary house wine or beer with dinner. Single Travelers Guide to Planning a Solo Cruise.

There’s never been a better time to try something new. and doing so on your own terms..

A solo cruise isn't just a vacation; it's a chance for self-discovery and the creation of unforgettable memories on the open seas.

The idea of going on a cruise alone can be daunting — but solo travel is the way of the future. Luckily, US News & World Report named Virgin Voyages “among the best cruises for solo travelers ” in 2022.

Solo Travel is on the Rise

Solo cruises are the new norm in 2024, as people are increasingly willing to take on adventure themselves if their friends or family can’t be convinced to join. “There is a really wonderful circular relationship between self-esteem and traveling ,” licensed psychologist Dr. Chloe Carmichael Peet told NBC News. “Traveling in itself is an act of confidence. The fact that you went somewhere by yourself demonstrates strength.”

We’re inclined to agree — although between the bounty of onboard entertainment shows and events we curate and our carefully compiled list of Shore Things for when you dock, you won’t need to demonstrate too much strength on a voyage.

A study by MMGY found that one in four travelers plans to travel solo in the next six months. Will you be among them? Whether it’s with a classic, relaxing 4-night jaunt through the Caribbean or a sprawling 15-night getaway across the Mediterranean, you deserve some “you” time. See you on board for a solo cruise, Sailor!

Plan a Solo Cruise, Reconnect and Meet other Singles

Planning and going on a solo cruise can be a liberating and empowering experience, especially if it is your first cruise and you have no set expectations. Traveling on a cruise ship with like minded people who may also be traveling solo provides plenty of opportunity to meet new people. When traveling solo whether you’re over 30, 40, or 50, it’s your time to explore on your terms. You’ll be able to set your own schedule, or if you happen to meet someone on board you can schedule activities you’re both interested in through our Mobile App. We are an adult only cruise line that caters to solo travelers, with our cruise ships having a sociable atmosphere and plenty of social events. As a solo traveler, you may want relaxation, or adventure, or a bit of both, regardless if you are a solo traveler that likes quiet time, or to be in the mix of social fun you’ll find plenty of activities on board our cruise ships, and on shore excursions. Remember when planning your solo cruise to pack wisely. Consider what to wear on your cruise , although we don’t have a dress policy onboard our cruise ships, nor do we force you into a formal night, you still want to consider our cruise activities and dressing for shore excursions.

A Solo Cruise for Singles, and everyone in between

People of any relationship status can find fun aboard one of our voyages, and our exclusively adult philosophy creates an alluring onboard atmosphere that draws like-minded people to one another.

Our Crew has put a lot of thought into inclusive activities and spaces on board the ship, from a “grog walk” (Virginese for “pub crawl”) through our many bars to the shared table concept at Gunbae, our convivial, first-to-sea Korean BBQ restaurant — where diners mingle while seated around a table, all sharing the same grill.

“I came expecting to relax, eat some great food and have fun. What I didn’t expect was to meet such an amazing group of humans while traveling alone,” posted Braunwyn Windham-Burke of The Real Housewives of Orange County about her experience cruising single on Scarlet Lady. “I’m coming back different than I left, healing through joy, stronger and more aware of myself.”

Booking a Single Cabin for Solo Travelers

Our adult only cruise ships aren’t just retreats for the rich and reality TV-famous, though. The Insider and Sea View cabins are priced attractively for people traveling alone — and subscribers to the Virgin Voyages email list are often notified of promotions on double occupancy rooms with no single supplement, meaning you can spread out without the customary extra charge.

Take advantage of booking a single cabin on board a Virgin Voyage cruise ship, find a solo cruise deal and start saving. Our cruise cabins are super-yacht inspired cabins, built to optimize space and views . Perfect for solo travelers yearning for sophistication, relaxation, with VIP service! Enjoy comfort and privacy to your heart's desire in your own space, but if you ever feel need for a guest, our cabin beds are designed to be converted to give that living room vibe while making for a welcoming space of enjoyment.

Best Cruise Line for Singles and Solo Travelers

Our adults-only cruises make the perfect atmosphere for single cruisers to meet new friends. With plenty of onboard activities and entertainment, you won’t lack for excitement or things to do. From bar crawls to adult games, and cruise karaoke you’ll have plenty of laughs and fun. We also provide the Virgin Voyages mobile App, it’s no Facebook group, but gives you options to easily connect virtually with other sailors on board while providing options of sharing activities as well. Feel free to explore our App once you’ve booked your cruise, and no worries, we have free WiFi onboard so that you can stay connected with friends and family at home, so even when you’re traveling solo, you won’t be too far from loved ones. These and more make Virgin Voyages stand out as an excellent choice for solo/single travelers. If you’re truly craving for a solo cruise, pick Virgin Voyages for a memorable voyage on the high seas.

Guaranteed No Stress: The Best Singles Cruises For Over 50

  • Jul 29, 2022
  • Amy Spencer

There is nothing a wonderful cruise can’t fix, especially if you are a woman in midlife who has recently faced a breakup. Whether you need peace of mind, new adventures or activities to try, singles cruises for over 50 are very popular and anything but boring with plenty of evening cocktail parties and singles-only events for those who want to connect with someone during their vacation.

How Do Singles Cruises Work?

Specially catered to a more adult audience, cruises for mature solo travellers can give you the freedom to explore the world at a slow pace, while meeting new people, sunbathing, getting fit and relaxing . Thanks to a variety of shore excursions, discounts, chic single cabins (often at no extra cost) or roommate-matching services, as well as lots of entertainment, you can be sure to have a very enjoyable time.

The number of people choosing to sail on their own continues to grow – says Andy Harmer,   Senior VP of the Cruise Lines International Association (UK & Ireland) -. Offering both spaces for solitude and opportunities for social interaction, cruise holidays are a fantastic option for solo travel, as they take away the stress that can come with travelling alone on a land-based trip. Itineraries are organised by the cruise line, meaning guests can explore even the most far-reaching destinations without worrying about the logistics.

You can choose from an all-inclusive cruise line or a mid-range larger ship. Of course, small ships offer more intimacy, fewer guests, small-group excursions and more of a chance to get to know your fellow passengers . And once on board, all you have to do is enjoy yourself by following a program of events. But, don’t worry if you are a bit of an introvert, you can always set your own schedule or have no schedule at all.

What Cruise Lines Are Best For Singles?

Norwegian Cruise Line , Azamara , Saga Ocean and SinglesCruises are amongst the most popular choices for solo travellers. However, there are plenty of options when it comes to selecting a solo cruise , especially for those women over 50 interested in exploring itineraries off the beaten path on their own (rather than finding a new partner on board).

If you haven’t made up your mind about your next holidays yet, here are some inspirations to note down for a great experience on the sea or on the river .

Tauck – River Cruises

A cruise along the Danube or Rhine rivers is always a great choice. Tauck’s river cruises immerse you into the life of medieval villages and gracious cities along Europe’s inland waterways. Offering an intimate ambience and personalized service, their boats  host as few as 84 guests (and a max of just 130), ensuring a more relaxing, more intimate and less intimidating environment that many solo travellers appreciate .

A perfect choice for singles on a budget because the company also waives the normal single supplement on every Category 1 cabin, aboard every ship, and on every sailing of every Tauck River cruise itinerary. Included in their prices are all shore excursions, all gratuities, all onboard beverages (adult and otherwise), meals, airport transfers, luggage handling and more.

Heritage Expeditions -Adventurous Cruises

If you are an adventurous person then Heritage Expeditions are for you, especially if you’ve always wished to explore New Zealand or Australia and never dared to go. Every year, they offer voyages (ranging from 5 – 29 days) with small groups of between 18 and 140 intrepid travellers to some of the most unique and remote islands , coasts and shorelines on earth aboard their purpose-built expedition ships Heritage Adventurer and Heritage Explorer.

“ As an expedition cruise company, our voyages are non-traditional and attract lots of lone travellers – says Marketing Manager Isaac Wilson -. Guests on board become a sort of family as they share incredible wilderness experiences and wildlife encounters with the option to travel in single cabins or share a cabin with another solo traveller “.

APTouring – Iconic Waterways Cruises

A great way to experience a seamless and carefree journey, with everything included , making the perfect holiday. Known as the floating boutique hotel along iconic waterways , APTouring and its flexible four-star sister brand Travelmarvel , have waived single supplements on all their  European river cruises .

Amongst their signature cruises is their 15-day European Gems itinerary   sailing from Amsterdam to Budapest . Prices include return flights, accommodation aboard one of Travelmarvel’s new Contemporary River Ships, dining, drinks and sightseeing.

Not convinced yet? Remember, being alone does not have to be lonely. “ Enjoy the solace of a private balcony, eat a meal lost in your own thoughts, and explore each port on your own terms – suggests experts at Cruise Critic -. You are not forced to interact with your shipmates to have a great time on a cruise “.

Before starting your journey, just make sure to pack light, add a couple of gorgeous cocktail dresses and find a suitable and convenient accessory to keep your important personal items safe and close at hand. You can’t go wrong with high-quality and stylish custom lanyards . For many travellers, lanyards have turned out to be incredibly useful as they can  be worn around your neck to tuck your phone in a waterproof bag, hang your keys, hold your tickets etc. A fuss-free way to fully enjoy your next adventure on the sea.

The 10 Best Cruise Lines for Adults, According to a Kid-Free Cruiser

A kids-free zone.

Author image: about face matte fluid eye paint review chelsea candelario

Even though I’ve noticed a trend in the cruise industry leaning towards more family-friendly fleets (I’m looking at you, Royal Caribbean ), a lot of us still see the perks of a kid-free vacation. And while many (if not all) cruises have dedicated spaces for adults on board, sometimes you don’t want to be pigeon-holed into one area for the entirety of your trip in order to get some peace and quiet. So, I went on the hunt to find the best cruise lines for adults, so you can relax and have fun with the 21-and-over crowd.

Oceania cruises, how i chose the best cruise lines for adults.

I’ve been on seven cruises since 2018, including Princess, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. I have firsthand experience on each cruise line’s amenities, food, entertainment and more. I also spent time researching all the cruise lines on this list (especially the ones I’ve never been on) and did a deep dive to find out key destinations, ship information and star perks aboard their vessels. I even took it a step further and checked out reviews straight from the people—i.e., on places like Reddit, TikTok and travel blogs.

1. Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages came on the scene in 2021 and promised to create a cruise line for adults. In four years, it launched three ships: Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady and gave guests full access to all its amenities. Per their website, the cruise line strives to let passengers try out over 20 eateries, participate in unlimited group fitness classes, enjoy free Wi-Fi and check live entertainment at an affordable price.

Speaking of entertainment, the cruise line takes it up a notch with their theme nights like PJ Party (aka a cool pajama party) and We Fancy (dress code: elegant), along with epic dance parties like Heartbeat inspired by Brooklyn’s own House of Yes , performances like Duel Reality which tells a modern interpretation of Romeo & Juliet and immersive experiences to get you involved in the show. Let’s not forget other fun activities to surely make a vacation a memorable one: ala private karaoke booths, casinos and a multi-story nightclub.

Viking Cruises

If you’re searching for a cruise line for adults, Viking should be on the top of your list. The cruise line is best known for their ocean, river and expedition cruises for adults 18 and over. According to  their website , “All guests must be 18 years old on or before the day they are scheduled to embark on their cruise; we do not maintain facilities or services on board for younger individuals.” Since 2000, Viking has always made it their mission to target older travelers, more specifically those over 55 to join their ships, so don’t expect to see any kiddos running around.

Viking currently has over 60 ships in their fleet that travel all around the world. You can take an iconic Western Mediterranean trip (Barcelona to Rome), a Grand  European  tour (Budapest to Amsterdam) or a Great Lakes voyage (Toronto to Minnesota). While many of the ships feature pools, restaurants, a library room and theater, most travelers go for the thrilling excursions and even participate in lectures specifically found on the expedition ships (Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris) that are great for the curious scientist or animal lover.

  • Best for:  adventure seekers
  • Popular Destinations:  Rome, Athens, Sydney, Vancouver, Shanghai
  • Amenities:  restaurants, fitness center, hair salon, shops, bars, spa, pools
  • Price Range:  $1,999 to $79,995 per person

3. Seabourn

This luxurious cruise line provides an intimate and personalized experience that will make you feel like you’re vacationing on a yacht. Per their website, their ships can carry between 264 and 600 guests at time (compared to Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas can hold over 5,000 passengers). As a result, the bookings are extremely popular and limited. (In fact, it appears that most of their summer dates are already sold out.) While the minimum age is 6 years old, the target audience is around 35 and older, according to  Travel Weekly.  So, whether you’re looking for a traditional cruise or an expedition, Seabourn offers trips all around the world for seven to 30 days at sea—which gives you ample time to enjoy a relaxing massage at their spa, try to win big at the casino or have a dip in the pool. All of their ships also include live entertainment, fine dining and an all-inclusive package.

  • Best for:  smaller crowds
  • Minimum Age:  6+
  • Popular Destinations:  Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Monte Carlo, Alaska
  • Amenities:  restaurants, fitness center, hair salon, shops, bars, spa, pools, casino
  • Price Range:  $7,436 to $10,299 per person

best cruise lines for adults a photo of inside of celebrity ship pool deck

4. Celebrity

While Celebrity allows travelers of all ages to board their ships, travel site  Sophisticated Travel  found that most passengers are between their 40s and 50s. As  one redditor commented , “[I] have cruised Celebrity a few times. They have a few amenities for kids, so there are [a] few kids. [However] if [there] were any kids they were not really noticeable. In our experience no waterslides/waterparks equal very few kids on board.” The cruise line has been around since the ‘90s and currently has 16 ships in its fleet, traveling to port stops  like  Key West, Florida  to Athens,  Greece . The best part is you can schedule a weekend getaway or a long holiday for the entire season.

The cruise line prides itself on its extensive food and beverage options, using world-renowned chef dishes in their specialty restaurants and a wide selection of cocktails at your disposal. Plus, fun entertainment and  nightlife events  exclusively for adults like the Undercover, which is an exhibition inspired by the 1920s, and the Jazz Joint that turns the ship’s signature club into a speakeasy. Plus, most ships feature the Solarium, a space only for adults to lounge around and explore the inside pool minus kids.

  • Best for:  entertainment
  • Minimum Age:  6 months
  • Popular Destinations:  Bahamas, Barcelona, Vancouver, Florence, St. Kitts & Nevis
  • Amenities:  globally inspired cuisines, fitness center, shops, bars, spa, pools, casino
  • Price Range:  $237 to $17,535 per person

best cruise lines for adults a photo of oceania cruise ship

5. Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises only has six ships, but it’s been around since the early aughts. They sail around the world with destinations to New Zealand, Asia, Africa and 130 other locations. In fact, Oceania offers some of the longest stays on this list. Sure, you can cruise for a weekend or seven days, but the cruise line also offers long durations like a 200 days vacation—departing from Miami, Florida and visiting Caribbean islands (St. Maarten, Barbados) and parts of Brazil before arriving to New York. The cruise line is also known for its culinary experiences and enrichment programs. They have a dedicated library room so you can read comfortably as you sail, as well as guest lectures to learn more about the destinations you’re visiting and classes to learn how the meals are prepared.

And if you’re wondering if the cruise line is ‘adult-enough,’  one Tripadvisor commenter  believes it a huge hit for the 50+ crowd: “I would not recommend it unless it’s a port intensive trip. There are no activities for kids. The average age on board is 60s and above. They have trivia, bingo [and] needlepoint (cooking classes and art classes are hard to get). The entertainment is usually a string quartet and maybe a magician if you’re lucky. I wouldn’t take my adult children in their 30s for fear of their boredom. I would try Disney or Celebrity.”

  • Best for:  world travelers
  • Popular Destinations:  Lisbon, Iceland, Tokyo, Montreal, New York
  • Amenities:  globally inspired cuisines, fitness center, bars, spa, pools
  • Price Range:  $799 to $62,999 per person

best cruise lines for adults norweigan cruise

6. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian cruise line.

I’ve personally been on three Norwegian cruises ( twice on Prima ) and found very few children on board. While there are many thrill-seeking amenities fit for the whole family, there are plenty of ways to stray away from the younger folks. I found Norwegian Prima’s guests skew a bit older based on their upscale aesthetic around the ship that looks straight out of the MOMA museum. I appreciate Norwegian for its freestyle experience, with specialty and complimentary dining options that provide items outside of your usual pizza and hot dog joint.

The Norwegian Prima is also home to one of largest spas I’ve ever seen at sea. There are two gigantic pools, a few sauna rooms and a large lounge area overlooking the ocean. I spent hours in there just taking in the quiet and calming ambience. Plus, the live productions of  Summer: The Donna Summer Musical  and tribute shows that honor the like of Michael Jackson or Adele are just some of the ways they cater towards millennials, Gen Xers and boomers. Most ships even have dedicated pubs and intimate bars that play classic music from the 60s to early ‘00s, too.

  • Best for:  freestyle dining
  • Popular Destinations:  Alaska, Hawaii, Mykonos, Florence, Iceland
  • Amenities:  restaurants, fitness center, bars, spa, pools, activities
  • Price Range:  $79 to $10,799 per person

Best Entertainment

7. holland america line, holland america line.

A cruise line owned by Carnival (a popular family-friend cruise company), Holland America Line is possibly the oldest cruise line of the bunch. It dates back to 1873 and was used as cargo and transportation service. Today, the ships are used for leisure as they travel all around the world, docking in the likes of Hawaii and Japan. You can spend a day—or 53 days—sailing with each ship. According to  Reddit , cruisers have seen families and smaller children, but found the majority of guests were over 40.

A standout feature of their newer ships is the entertainment on board. If you’re a music lover, ships like the Rotterdam and Koningsdam have the B.B King’s Blues Club and Rolling Stone Lounge that cater to playing the classic hits. Holland America Line also partnered with the Professional Pickleball Association to provide state of the art pickleball courts with impeccable views, as well as a casino and a spa, so every guest can find an activity they can enjoy on vacation.

Silversea is a luxury cruise line that’s great for romantic getaways. Once you step on board, you’re treated to  personalized service  (like 24-hour butler service), part of the inclusive package for each guest. Similar to Regent, there’s unlimited shore excursions, so you can explore every port on your trip. The fleet reaches about 900 destinations, including Galápagos Island, French Polynesia and Antarctica. The cruise line also offers complimentary beverages and fine dining. The most popular is the S.A.L.T Kitchen, which provides dishes based on your destinations. There’s even a more exclusive chef option only on their Nova-class ships for a more intimate setting. best cruise lines for adults a photo inside of princess cruise pool deck

Editor's Pick

10. princess cruises, princess cruises.

I recently traveled with Princess Cruises, and I highly recommend it for adults who aren’t traveling with kids in mind. As mentioned, I’ve been on seven cruises, and this by far has been the least family-friendly cruise line—in a good way! Although there were some kids and teens, the ship was made of mostly older travelers. I was actually surprised by how much it catered to adults over kids. It didn’t have many thrilling amenities like waterslides or an expansive basketball court that usually draw the younger crowds, but there were plenty of things that made the ship thrilling and exciting for mature folks.

For instance, Spellbound, an interactive cocktail experience hat features magicians, an exclusive bar and experimental dishes. There’s also Love by Britto, a dining experience which is heart-themed (down to the utensils) and sets a romantic vibe for couples. Additionally, all Princess ships have many ways to unwind and have fun that cater toward adults, like including their spa, theaters and pool decks. In fact, their latest ship, the Sun Princess, also has the Sanctuary, a pool area set apart from the rest of the ship that’s strictly for adults, so you can lounge under the sun all day without interruption.

  • Best for:  immersive dining
  • Popular Destinations:  Sydney, Vancouver, San Juan, London, Barcelona
  • Price Range:  $127 to $23,398 per person

Don’t Want to Cruise With Kids? Sail on These Adult-Focused Cruise Ships

From cruise lines with a minimum age requirement to itineraries geared specifically to adults, on these cruises you won’t see many or any little ones..

Whether you have kids or grandkids, nieces or nephews, or not, whether you love kids or don’t, sometimes there is something very appealing about the idea of a relaxing cruise vacation minus the youngsters. That’s where adults-only cruises come in.

Back in the late 1990s when Torstein Hagen created Viking River Cruises , now by far Europe’s largest river cruise operator, it was purposely designed for adults with no kids allowed aboard . That philosophy stands as the company has moved into ocean cruises and expedition ships .

Likewise, when British billionaire Richard Branson launched the first ship of his Virgin Voyages cruise brand three years ago, it was with no one under age 18 allowed aboard. The cruise line later riffed on the subject with ads showing kids very displeased that they couldn’t get in on the fun with grown-ups.

No other major cruise lines outright ban the under-18 set, but there are ways travelers can lessen the chances there will be many or any children on their cruise.

If you really want to avoid kids, don’t cruise during a school break period (such as spring break, summer, or winter holidays), pick an itinerary for more than two weeks (length being a deterrent to the family crowd— world cruise , anyone?), or look toward an ultra-luxurious cruise or one that involves an expensive airfare—not everyone wants to splurge on an upscale experience for their progeny.

Also keep in mind the smaller the ship—and fewer experiences for kids (such as kids clubs and big water slides)—the greater the chance youngsters won’t be aboard. Here are our picks for the best cruises for adults.

Whether you cruise with Viking on one of the company’s many 190-passenger river cruise vessels in Europe, on the line’s 930-passenger ocean cruise ships that sail around the world, or on one of its two 378-passenger expedition ships, you’ll be treated to a fine-tuned cruising experience geared strictly to adults. You need to be age 18 and up to get aboard to enjoy the many perks covered in the all-inclusive fares. Those perks consist of shore excursions in every port, free wine and beer, all meals (including numerous restaurant experiences and nightly seafood buffets), engaging lectures hosted by historians and other experts, and Nordic spas complete with hot sauna, steam room, and a chilly snow grotto.

To book: Viking’s 15-day Grand European Tour sails from Amsterdam to Budapest on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers, starting from $4,999 per person.

Virgin Voyages' Razzle Dazzle restaurant features a playful mostly red interior

Head to Virgin Voyages’ Razzle Dazzle restaurant where the adults-only clientele can pick from menu items that are either “naughty” or “nice.”

Virgin Voyages

Adult-only cruises offered by Virgin Voyages take place on four 2,770-passenger ships that sail the Caribbean, Europe, and the South Pacific. The atmosphere aboard is edgy, cheeky, full of subtle—and not so subtle—sexual innuendo, and fun done in an inclusive, adult way unlike anything the cruise industry has ever seen before . Expect lots of day drinking, lively nighttime parties and entertainment, a tattoo parlor, and indulgent food, including an over-the-top molecular dining experience and the “Lick Me Till . . . Ice Cream” shop (for no extra charge)—in between trips to the wellness retreat with a mud room and ’80s-style aerobics classes for the full detox and retox Virgin experience.

To book: Virgin’s 4-night Fire & Sunset Soirées sailing , embarks Miami for Key West and then Virgin’s private Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas, from $1,564 for two.

Sail in sophistication—and likely without kids—on Azamara cruise ships.

Azamara Cruises

This upscale line with four small ships does not restrict kids but tends to attract well-traveled couples aged 50 and up who like the idea of seeing the world from the vantage point of a floating boutique hotel. The atmosphere on Azamara sailings is both convivial and sophisticated, on ships that carry a maximum of 704 guests. The vessels feature a library with a faux fireplace, an upscale steakhouse for an elevated dining experience, and a “living room” for drinking and socializing.

Itineraries focus on maximizing time in port, with cultural immersion, including small group shore excursions and “AzAmazing” experiences where, for instance, you and other guests might be treated to a complimentary private acrobatics show in Monaco. Special golf cruises with PerryGolf include play at such prestigious courses as Ireland’s Royal Portrush.

To book: Sail on the 690-passenger Azamara Journey for a 10-night Croatia Intensive Voyage , from $2,219 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

With a fleet of 490- to 750-passenger ships, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the most expensive cruise lines out there and touts that it is “the world’s most luxurious cruise line”—a status it gets by, for instance, outfitting its latest ships with Carrara marble details, crystal chandeliers, over-the-top suites, and multi-million-dollar art collections. Fares include a broad choice of shore excursions such as a mud bath experience in Lautoka, Fiji, premium wine and spirits, and business-class international airfare. While the line does not ban kids—and in fact, encourages families at holidays and on summer cruises in Alaska—not everyone wants to pay top dollar for experiences that may go over kids’ heads.

To book: An 11-night trip from Miami to the Caribbean on the 496-passenger Seven Seas Navigator starts at $5,699 for two passengers.

Silversea Cruises

With its sleek ships, a focus on cuisine and drink as a cultural experience, butlers that pamper all guests, and an overall ultra-luxury ambience, Silversea is a favorite of well-heeled adult travelers. Grandparents may bring a multigenerational group aboard for a holiday or summertime sailing (the 596-passenger Silver Muse is the only Silversea ship with a children’s playroom), but with air-inclusive fares that start at around $800 a day, and no discounts for kids, you’re unlikely to have your pool time interrupted by shouts of “Marco Polo.” Rather, you’re more likely to hear someone call an attendant over for more champagne and a side of caviar, both complimentary and available 24/7.

To book: A 10-night sailing from Civitavecchia (Rome) to Barcelona on the 596-passenger Silver Moon , is priced from $7,600 per person.

Windstar guarantees there won’t be young kids aboard—you must be age eight or up to sail. That said, it’s rare to see any kids at all. The upscale line’s 148- to 342-passenger ships deliver an intimate, adult atmosphere whether you are on a four- or five-masted ship with billowing sails or an all-suite motorized yacht. Cabins and suites are mostly designed for two and attract couples looking for romance at sea, in addition to excellent dining, enhanced by the line’s status as the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation. Borrow a kayak from your ship’s own marina by day and cap an evening of food and drink with quiet time out on deck, watching the moon reflect on the sea.

To book: The 7-day Dreams of Tahiti itinerary takes place on the 312-passenger sailing ship Star Breeze , with all-inclusive pricing starting from $3,399 per person.
