Avenged Sevenfold

In 2023, Avenged Sevenfold is playing like it has something to prove.

The metal quintet — singer M. Shadows, rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance, lead guitarist Synyster Gates, bassist Johnny Christ and drummer Brooks Wackerman — released its first new record in seven years on June 2, “Life Is but a Dream…” This project, the group’s eighth full-length, pushes proggier instincts to the surface, in a departure from the more straightforward work that brought them millions of listeners and a reputation for an energy-forward live act.

Popular on Variety

The standouts of the new material were first single “Nobody,” with its lurching guitars and unconventional structure, and “We Love You,” a hypnotizing anti-capitalism anthem with its propulsive lyrics running over the giant screens: “More power, more pace / More money, more taste / More sex, more pills / More skin, more shills / Build tall, build higher.” The screens added a fun texture to the night, mixing great closeups of the musicians with some wonderfully METAL imagery, such as burning houses, band members caught on fire, cartoon lovers killing each other and, incredibly, a skeleton playing saxophone.

Perhaps the night’s only misstep was the sequencing of the encore, which only consisted of the new three-song suite “G,” “(O)rdinary” and “(D)eath” from “Dream.” After the blistering fan service of the latter half of their set, the relatively low-key, moderately-paced cluster of songs was the only new material that felt othered from the rest of the Avenged Sevenfold songbook, and it ended the night on a bit of a whimper, with fans confused once the band left the stage and the instrumental “Dream” title track piped in through the speakers for several minutes.

Luckily as the audience exited into the Manhattan summer, they were squarely focused on the many high points, air-guitaring away into the night.

Watch AVENGED SEVENFOLD's Entire Madison Square Garden Concert

Fan-filmed video of AVENGED SEVENFOLD 's entire June 23 concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City can be seen below. The group's 16-song set included five songs from AVENGED SEVENFOLD 's latest album, "Life Is But A Dream…" : "Game Over" , "Mattel" , "We Love You" , "Nobody" and the three-track run of "G" , "(O)rdinary" and "(D)eath" . The latter has been described in one review as by far the most left-field sounding part of the LP, ranging in style from metal/country [ "G" ], to full-blown DAFT PUNK impersonation [ "(O)rdinary" ] to lounge jazz [ "(D)eath" ].

AVENGED SEVENFOLD 's setlist for the Madison Square Garden concert was as follows:

01. Game Over 02. Mattel 03. Afterlife 04. Hail To The King 05. We Love You 06. Buried Alive 07. The Stage 08. So Far Away 09. Nobody 10. Nightmare 11. Bat Country 12. Unholy Confessions 13. A Little Piece Of Heaven

14. G 15. (O)rdinary 16. (D)eath

In a recent interview with Lou Brutus of HardDrive Radio , AVENGED SEVENFOLD singer M. Shadows discussed the experimental nature of "Life Is But A Dream…" Written and recorded over the span of four years, it was produced by Joe Barresi and AVENGED SEVENFOLD in Los Angeles and mixed by Andy Wallace in the Poconos, Pennsylvania. The album is a journey through an existential crisis; a very personal exploration into the meaning, purpose and value of human existence with the anxiety of death always looming.

"We were just looking for really bold moments — in life, in art, in film," M. Shadows explained. "Things that we could sort of wrap our minds around an audio representation of how we were feeling about certain things.

"At this point, playing around with melody, playing around with tones, playing around with left turns, curveballs was really appealing to us.

"I think we've proven to everyone, whether they like the band or not, that we kind of know the rules of music, and this record, we were able to just go break all the rules," he continued.

" Mike Shinoda [of LINKIN PARK ] put it to me really perfectly — I love his insight on a lot of things — and he said, 'This record is like you guys throwing paint at the wall, but if a fourth-grader was doing it, you'd say that's just paint on the wall. But because of everything you've done before, we all know you know how to make a beautiful painting, so this record is actually really special because it's not just paint on the wall. You guys have broken all the rules and done things in an abstract way. But we wanna listen and pay attention because we know what you guys have done before.' And I thought it was an interesting way of putting it, 'cause those [ LINKIN PARK ] guys — Dave [ 'Phoenix' Farrell ] and Mike — have been big fans of this record. And I think that was a cool way of putting it."

The singer, whose real name is Matt Sanders , added: "We kind of just really wanted to push the boundaries — the musical boundaries, the lyrical boundaries, the themes — and we didn't want anything on the record to sound generic or phoned in or not exciting. We wanted to redo everything we've ever done, where even the song lengths and the way we kind of put these little pieces of ear candy, but we get away from it quick. Or staying away from three choruses, or if there is three choruses, they're all vastly different. And really thinking about turning the traditional landscape of how you would normally put a song together on its head, but do it in an interesting way — not just to do it, but just to do it in a way that we think people will enjoy and give them sort of a reason to get to the end of songs or get to the next song on the record. And I think that was just a mindset this time, was just a little different — really looking at those things."

AVENGED SEVENFOLD made its first festival appearance in five years on May 19 at Welcome To Rockville at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. The band's setlist included three songs from "Life Is But A Dream…" : "Game Over" , "We Love You" and "Nobody" .

AVENGED SEVENFOLD 's first concert since June 2018 took place on May 12 at AREA15 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In April, AVENGED SEVENFOLD announced the second leg of its extensive "Life is But A Dream…" North American tour featuring support from FALLING IN REVERSE . Produced by Live Nation , leg two includes stops in Nashville, Denver, Austin, and more before concluding at Fort Worth's Dickies Arena on October 15. Fans will have the opportunity to hear the group's first single in seven years, "Nobody" , and their new album "Life Is But A Dream…" for the first time live during the 30-show outing.

The first leg with support from ALEXISONFIRE includes thirteen cities across the U.S. and Canada, such as Mansfield, Québec City, Tinley Park, Calgary, and more.

Avenged Sevenfold's first ever show at Madison Square Garden is a mixed bag for a band with such lofty ambitions

Dodgy sound, strange lighting choices and a misfired attempt to integrate their new music undermines an otherwise solid showing at the world's most famous arena.

Twenty or so minutes into his band’s first ever performance at Madison Square Garden, M. Shadows decides to cast light upon magic. Avenged Sevenfold , he explains, almost didn’t make their appointment at the “world’s most famous arena” on account of cancelled flights and other travel snafus. As if this weren’t quite enough, the singer’s admission that their very presence onstage is attributable entirely to the genius of their road crew ensuring the show goes on begs numerous questions. Here’s two of them: is the often-muddy sound attributable to the acoustics of an ageing arena, or has half of the backline gone missing in transit? And is the decision to light the musicians so dimly (and almost never from above) the result of an art-house aesthetic, or is this the best the riggers could do with only limited equipment?

Either way, Avenged Sevenfold at Madison Square Garden is not quite the triumph it ought to have been. And, for sure, it’s not a fitting showcase for the Orange County quintet’s brand new album. Because as well as being the band’s best and most ambitious LP, Life Is But A Dream… , unveiled at the start of the month, is perhaps the most inventive and fearless creation of its kind released this century . Certainly, as a statement of intent from one of the world’s most popular loud bands, its qualities are such that it is neither idealistic nor optimistic to envisage its 11 songs being performed in their entirety, front to back, by music-makers who must surely know they have created something truly special. Instead of this, though, New York gets half the LP smattered (overwhelmingly and confusingly) at the front and back of the set. Worse still, the vocals for night’s opening two songs – Game Over and Mattel – are lost to a PA that sounds as if it’s been salvaged from the Staten Island Ferry. “Turn your fucking mic up!” screams an exasperated audience member near the front of the stage. And so say all of us…

The evening comes up short elsewhere too. For a band with eight studio albums to their name – and who are happy to smash into the three-figure price-range for the better seats in the house – an evening comprising 16-songs proper seems like scant reward indeed. After taking to the stage at 21:25, Avenged Sevenfold are done for the night by 11pm. And while it goes without saying that much of what lies in-between is superior fare – the pairing of Unholy Confessions and A Little Piece Of Heaven especially so – the nagging notion that the band onstage aren’t wholly comfortable in this kind of space, at least not tonight, continues to tug at the sleeve. Those who enjoy being in the proximity of master-craftsmen likely enjoy watching drummer Brooks Wackerman and guitarist Synyster Gates tear through time-signatures and styles as if genre, too, was but a dream. But as the houselights cast their sickly yellow upon a dispersing crowd that seems a touch confused by the overall experience, one wonders whether it would really have killed them to have played an encore.

Of course, by headlining Madison Square Garden, Avenged Sevenfold have realised a dream peculiar to almost every serious rock band. For such a notable achievement, allowances can be made. As the ugliest large venue in the New York area, not to mention one of the oldest of its kind in the country, it is often overlooked that a night at “the world’s most famous arena” these days tends to be a happier experience for those holding guitars than for those bearing tickets. On other nights, though, when the traffic flows both ways, there is disappointment enough to be felt by all.

Avenged sevenfold unveil life is but a dream… at madison square garden.

Avenged Sevenfold are having quite a celebration this June. Releasing their first new album in seven years and selling out Madison Square Garden has kicked off a brand new era in the band’s history. On June 2, the Huntington Beach metalheads unleashed Life Is But A Dream… via Warner Records. They followed that up a week later with their first proper Los Angeles headline show since 2009. And last Friday, June 23, the band hit NYC’s Madison Square Garden for their first gig in the city since 2007.

Back in March, Avenged Sevenfold launched an updated website with a countdown timer, fueling speculation of new music. Online scavenger hunts, AI-driven puzzles, and voice modifiers all led to the release of Life Is But A Dream… lead single “ Nobody “. The song presents a swirling array of shrieking guitar chords, dense arpeggios, and vocalist M. Shadows ’ absurdist lyrics. As each layer is added, the mysterious apprehension continues to build before the song transitions into meditative, dueling guitar leads backed by a creepy, cinematic bass line. The song itself feels like the soundtrack to an ill-fated hero’s battle against evil. On “Nobody,” Avenged Sevenfold trade more traditional songwriting for moments of discomfort shrouded in a new graphic tension.

Shortly after the initial rollout, M. Shadows and company revealed the full Life Is But A Dream… North American tour spanning from mid-July through October . The preview shows in LA and NYC this June provided fans with an early chance to see the band return to the stage after a 5-year absence, as well as debut new songs. At The Garden, the band was already in mid-tour form. Cruising through a career-spanning setlist and commanding the sold-out crowd from start to finish, they felt unstoppable.

M. Shadows is no stranger to teasing fans, both online and in person, and he was not going to skip the opportunity to do so at these shows. Right before the band took the stage, the house lights went out, and “ I Want It That Way ” by Backstreet Boys played in full over the PA. The MSG crowd adequately clapped back, lighting the room with their cell phone lights and singing every word of the song in a vibrant chorus. The band followed this up by playing “ Nightcall ” by Kavinsky as they walked on stage to a thunderous reception.

The setlist at Madison Square Garden repeated the LA show, leaning heavily into Life Is But A Dream… with eight of the 11 tracks. The show kicked off with the album’s opening track, “ Game Over ”. The song starts with a delicate acoustic guitar intro before quickly devolving into driving guitar riffs and M. Shadows’ relentless vocal delivery. A wailing guitar solo takes over the track, creating a frenetic energy that the crowd was ready for. “ Mattel ” came next, with a groovier feel to the guitars and a mosh pit expanding breakdown laced with cinematic organs. Larger-than-life flames projected around the band made the concert feel like a 3D horror movie experience.

Changing gears and going back to their roots, they then treated the room to fan favorites “ Afterlife ” and “ Hail To The King ”. The setlist continued to mix songs from across the band’s discography, with the new tracks fitting in seamlessly. The sold-out Garden brought peak energy throughout the night, singing along to new songs that are only a couple of weeks old.

Avenged Sevenfold is sporting an interesting stage design for this new tour. A very large, bare stage juts out into the crowd, creating more front rail space for fans without the isolating effects of a long catwalk. The band members constantly move about the stage. Engaging with fans on the floor and in seats, they even find time to dance and mosh with each other. Then there were the dynamic visuals projected onto three massive semi-transparent panels backing the stage. Showing themes from the new album as well as classic imagery from the band’s history, it combined the two seamlessly.

At times, however, it felt that some of the band were smothered by the large empty space. Drummer Brooks Wackerman , for example, was mostly out of sight at the back of the flat stage. It created somewhat of a diorama effect. Feeling like the band was miniature figurines on display for a large viewing audience, which could have been offset with layered tiers or some texture on the stage. Avenged Sevenfold are focused on the cinematic experience on this tour. Translating the themes of the music into large-scale graphic imagery and removing the focus from the musicians themselves. This effect was certainly achieved, feeling like you were seeing the concert in an IMAX theater.

avenged sevenfold madison square garden

The main set culminated with a classic trio of songs from the mid-2000s, turning the entire floor, and many seated areas, into mosh pits. It started with “ Bat Country ” from 2005’s City Of Evil followed by the relentless, NYC hardcore-influenced “ Unholy Confessions ”. M. Shadows shouted out their influences from the NYCHC scene that drove their earlier work, including local legends Sick Of It All . The main set ended with “ A Little Piece Of Heaven ”, a song that perfectly bridges the band’s earlier work with Life Is But A Dream… . The cinematic and structurally experimental song from their self-titled LP could very well fit on the new album. It allowed us to come full circle for one last sing-along for the night.

After a short break, the band reemerged for their encore, hitting the last three songs from Life Is But A Dream… As the titular piano outro played over the PA as they took their bows, it was clear what a special night his has been. The love in the room was enormous. Avenged Sevenfold have garnered a loyal fan base over their 20-year career. Blending elements of classic heavy metal with punk and hardcore into a signature sound that still shakes a sold-out arena. This new LP is a fresh start for the storied band. Emerging from their pandemic-driven hiatus into a new, invigorated era.

Avenged Sevenfold will take a short break as they prepare for the lengthy tour that kicks off next month. Head over to their website for full tour details. Check out our full photo gallery from Madison Square Garden below!

Avenged Sevenfold at Madison Square Garden / June 23, 2023

Avenged Sevenfold is among heavy metal’s most musically-adventurous bands. The band formed as a metalcore band in 1999 in Huntington Beach, California. Within a few years, the music gravitated to a more classic metal and hard rock sound. In recent years, the band leaned in the direction of progressive metal. The band’s eighth and most recent studio album,  Life Is but a Dream…,  released on June 2, shows the band adopting avant-garde metal arrangements.

Live, however, as in the band’s debut appearance at Madison Square Garden on June 23, the concoction was a bit of this and a bit of that. The set list touched on seven of the band’s albums, and focused heavily on the new and lesser-known product. The diversity did not always click beautifully, but the band’s attempt to bring it all together was stellar.

Ticket buyers invested in the concert based on Avenged Sevenfold’s history, as the band released  Life Is but a Dream… , its first album in seven years, only three weeks before the concert. The new material demonstrated that during the band’s extended quiet period, it quietly committed itself to not repeating any previous formulas for its next project. Vocalist M. Shadows, rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance, lead guitarist Synyster Gates, bassist Johnny Christ, and drummer Brooks Wackerman further proved that there was more to heavy metal than headbanging.

The stage at Madison Square Garden was at least twice as large as the usual stage, capable of hosting two entire orchestras. The main area was surrounding by projection screens. There were no fire pots or confetti cannons.

After sets by Living Colour and Falling in Reverse, Avenged Sevenfold came on stage in a mysterious way. As curious kinetic projections moved on the screens, the musicians paced the large stage, mostly in darkness, while Shadows sat center stage on a chair, wearing a zippered waist jacket and black ski mask. The show opener was “Game Over” from the current album.

Due to flight delays, the band was unable to do a sound check, and it showed, as the crew worked to regulate the sound mix during the initial songs. Shadows could barely be heard. As the opening song switched gears midway from thrash to mellow, Shadows left his chair and walked to the edge of the stage to work the audience, but still barely could be heard, as he switched from croons to screams.

Much the same happened with the second song, “Mattel,” also from the newest album and featuring tempo and intensity fluctuations. At least for this song, Shadows removed his ski mask. As the front line of players continually paced the large stage, Shadows often sang from the front corners of the stage, where small teleprompters rolled the complicated lyrics to his songs.

By the third song, the sound improved greatly. Shadows took off his jacket and welcomed the audience. The band’s more familiar sounds finally chimed in with twin guitar leads and crunching power chords. The audience joined in the singing as the band entered into the fan favorites, “Afterlife” and “Hail to the King.” From there, the band provided a high energy performance with numerous songs from its most successful albums.

Among the fails of the show was that the stage was unnecessarily large for a quintet; the front line musicians spent so much time pacing when a more compressed panorama would have allowed the audience to better capture what was happening musically. Also, flashing lights often partly blinded the audience while the musicians ironically played in darkness. Lastly, the band played seven songs from a new album that is perhaps forward-thinking and boundary-stretching but is also just plain weird at times. Most puzzling of all, the band closed the show with a low-key suite of three new songs, “G,” “(O)rdinary,” and “(D)eath,” instead of charging into an energized, familiar song.

Avenged Sevenfold is going through another phase, and the musical growth had its shining moments in concerts. The audience got a healthy helping of passionate singing, soaring guitar shreds and double bass drumming. The band’s new experimental sound is intriguing but it has not yet reached the level of finesse that would take the band into the highest level of perfection.

Avenged Sevenfold lead singer M. Shadows rocks out.

After a five-year hiatus from touring, Avenged Sevenfold is back and ready to melt their fans’ faces once again.

From June through October, the metal veterans are scheduled to rock at arenas, amphitheaters, state fair grounds, domes and pavilions in the U.S. and Canada as part of their ‘Life Is But A Dream Tour’ in support of their new album with the same name.

They didn’t forget the Northeast either.

Midway through the 32-concert run, M. Shadows and co. will to drop into New York City’s Madison Square Garden on June 23 and Camden, NJ’s Freedom Mortgage Pavilion on July 18.

And if you need tickets to catch the “Hail To The King” group live, we’re here to let you know shockingly affordable last-minute tickets are still available.

In fact, at the time of publication, we found some tickets going for as low as $25 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Considering you’ll get to see special guests Alexisonfire and Falling In Reverse on select dates, that’s a bona fide steal.

As we all know, nothing is quite as metal as a bargain.

Want to find out how much tickets cost at the show nearest you?

You’re in the right place. We’ve got all the pertinent details below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Avenged Sevenfold 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar of all upcoming ‘Life Is But A Dream’ tour dates, venues and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found right here:

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Avenged Sevenfold new music

The band’s 2023 album “Life Is But A Dream” is the group’s first since 2016’s “The Stage” and their eighth overall.

Comprised of 11 tracks, “LIBAD” is 53 minutes of uncompromising metal that Louder Sound called the “craziest album you’ll hear this year.”

If you want to experience it yourself, you can hear the record in its glorious entirety here .

Avenged Sevenfold set list

Based on what we’ve seen from their headlining gigs at festivals and one-off show in Las Vegas this May, it appears the band has a pretty pat set list ready to go.

Here’s what you can likely expect to hear at an upcoming show courtesy of Set List FM (although we hope they play more than 11 songs):

01.) “Game Over” 02.) “Afterlife” 03.) “Hail to the King” 04.) “We Love You” 05.) “Buried Alive” 06.) “So Far Away” 07.) “Nobody” 08.) “Nightmare” 09.) “Bat Country” 10.) “Unholy Confessions” 11.) “A Little Piece of Heaven”

Avenged Sevenfold Announce 2023 North American Tour, Their First in Five Years

Avenged Sevenfold have announced a set of 2023 North American tour dates, which marks the band's first time hitting the road in five years.

While the group already announced two headlining performances in Los Angeles and New York City when they released the song "Nobody" earlier this month , this will be their first official tour since 2018. The run is in support of their upcoming album  Life Is But a Dream,  which will be out June 2 and can be pre-ordered here . Alexisonfire will serve as support throughout the trek.

See the full itinerary below.

Avenged teamed up with Ticketmaster for a new form of ticketing in order to combat scalpers and bots. Members of the band's Deathbats Club have an exclusive first chance at tickets. Individuals can request tickets from now until tomorrow (March 28) at 3PM ET using Ticketmaster’s new Token-Gated Sales platform at this location , and once the window closes, they'll be notified whether or not the request was granted.

“This new capability allows artists to get special access and rewards to specific fans they want to super serve,” David Marcus, EVP of Global Music at Ticketmaster said in a statement. “Artists like Avenged Sevenfold are using Web3 and NFTs to build deeper relationships with their fans, and we’re proud to help foster that connection through live events.”

Read more about Ticketmaster's  token-gated ticketing here . Tickets go on sale to the general public Thursday, March 30 at 10AM local time, and can be purchased here .

As noted by Setlist.fm , Avenged's last concert took place on June 30, 2018 at a festival in Hungary while they were still supporting their 2016 album  The Stage.  Shortly after, the band had to cancel the rest of the dates they had scheduled for the year because frontman M. Shadows contracted a viral infection that posed potential long-term damage to his vocal chords. Thus, his doctors suggested he take a few months off from singing, and they haven't played a concert since.
