Based in Orlando, Florida, Alter Bridge formed out of the remnants of popular hard rock act Creed, offering a more melodic, metal sound than the post-grunge of their past act.

After Creed came to an end in 2004, members Mark Tremonti (lead guitar), Brian Marshall (bass) and Scott Phillips (drums) joined forces with ex-The Mayfield Four singer and guitarist, Myles Kennedy. Forming Alter Bridge, the band quickly got to work on their debut album, "One Day Remains," which found great success, eventually being certified Gold. The virtuosic guitar talent of Tremonti and the powerful vocals of Kennedy helped the album stand apart from Creed's discography.

After touring globally in support of the album, the band left their label, Wind Up, and moved to Universal imprint, Republic. Returning to the studio for their second effort, 2007's "Blackbird," Alter Bridge found success with the lead single, "Rise Today," finding widespread positive critical acclaim, displaying a greater songwriting influence of Kennedy.

In 2009, Creed reformed and Alter Bridge was put on the back burner by the members, with Kennedy joining Slash's touring band. Yet a year later, Alter Bridge was back in full force, returning with the album, "AB III." A live album of their stadium-sized performance, "Live at Wembley: European Tour" soon followed, which displayed their anthemic abilities. Praise continued for Alter Bridge with their fourth record, "Fortress," which was released to positive acclaim in 2013.

Live reviews

Reports that straightforward, no-frills hard rock is dead have been greatly exaggerated; if you need proof of that, Alter Bridge would be more than happy to provide it. They’ve only been going for a decade, and they’re hardly household names, but they’re already veterans of the UK arena circuit, and were second only to the mighty Aerosmith on the bill for this year’s final day of Download Festival. Frontman Myles Kennedy has a prodigious work ethic; his other job, if you can call it that, is fronting Slash’s band, and he tours extensively with both outfits. Despite everything he puts it through, though, his voice remains as fierce as ever; he has one of the finest deliveries in modern rock, with the kind of classic sound that allows him to pull of Guns n’ Roses classics with Slash as well as sound genuinely aggressive and forward-thinking on Bridge material. Last year, the band’s fourth record, Fortress, met with superb reviews, with an average of 81 on Metacritic; it also saw them solidify their reputation as one of the finest live acts in rock, with a UK arena tour enjoying a rapturous reception in October of last year. Kennedy will be back on Slash duty in those same huge rooms later this year, putting Alter Bridge temporarily on the back burner; rumour has it, though, that they’re already lining up UK dates for 2015.

The Raven Age standing in for Sevendust gave an energetic but altogether forgettable performance.

Shinedown excelled with crowd pleasing hits and incredible stage presence connecting with the audience in a unique way.

But the crown goes to the main guys AB for most incredible and memorable performance, possibly of the year for most of us. Electrifying the crowd with the sheer magnitude of their presence they filled the gigantic arena effortlessly. They tore the atmosphere with heavy classics such as Cry of Achilles, tore our heartstrings with light acoustic numbers such as Watch Over You, brought us to the present with new fan favourites such as Native Son from their latest album Walk the Sky before sealing the deal with the immortal Blackbird and a beautiful encore including the very apt Godspeed.

These guys are already known for their humble and friendly manner on stage and off and this was greater emphasized with this engaging appearance. With such times as Myles' controlling the audience to 'Santa Tremonti' giving away his signature PRS guitar to the crowd member who 'went the wildest' during Pay No Mind this band cannot be more loveable nor revered.

The perfect way to end such a busy and exciting year for rock, Alter Bridge have quite nicely cemented their place as the greatest active rock band of our times.

Wow, Alter Bridge were amazing to see live. My wife and I got the VIP upgrade. There was a delay for the VIP part (about 1.5 hours late which at the time was annoying), but after that it was fantastic. The meet and greet part was pretty quick, but shaking hands with my idols was amazing. The photo with the band was also pretty quick so make sure you have your game face ready (I sort of look like a dork with a smile from ear to ear). Our venue nearly forgot (or did forget) about the sound check, but then we ended up getting in to hear it before the opening band (Like A Storm) came onstage. Sound check was great as well. Myles and the band had a bit of a laugh with us here.

The opening band Like A Storm were really good. They had a short set list, and also played T.N.T from Australian rock heroes AC/DC which got the crowd involved.

When Alter bridge came out, the crowd went crazy. They are amazing entertainers, and really know how to put on a good show.

I would definitely go to another Alter abridge show, and would also do the VIP upgrade again.

Cheers Alter Bridge.

I've seen Alter Bridge several times now since discovering them 4 or 5 years ago and this was the best of the lot. They are a band currently at the top of their game as regards performing. The new album is great and it's good to see Myles playing more lead. He's a great lead player. But then there's Tremonti, who is absolutely incredible. His playing is effortless. Between them they are among the best front pair out there today in my opinion.

Some different songs in the set list this year and one or two of my favourites didn't make it in, but overall it was bloody great. Kennedy is a perfect gentleman and all round nice bloke and whilst he might not run around like Axl Rose, he is engaging and interacts well with the crowd.

This show also had Like A Storm ,Gojira and Volbeat on the bill, so an incredible night's entertainment. 10/10

What can I say...... A fantastic evening of live music topped off by Myles & co..... I watched them 2 weeks earlier in Manchester which I'd have to rate as 7 out of 10..... But seeing them in the first direct arena at Leeds I'd rate at 9 out of 10...... Only negative for me was having gojira as one of the support acts whose music genre was completely at odds with the rest of the other bands...... Which inc " like a storm" & "volbeat" who were fabulous and could probably healined the venue..... Excellent value for money and would encourage all those fledgling rockers to go see these bands.....

I'd never seen a didgeridoo used in a metal band until that evening! Like a storm

Well, the line up was pretty great. Not a fan of anything as heavy as Gojira but the others were great.

Alter Bridge rattled through a large catalogue of tracks with great professionalism and style. There was only one problem - the sound quality. Frankly it was crap. I've seen other bands at Leeds First Direct and never had this problem so can only assume it was the setup on this occasion. Overly loud and distorted. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with loud, but there was no clarity at all. Myles's vocals were lost in a bass ridden mess of sound, and Mark's lightening work on the frets was frankly lost.

Really disappointed as I'd so looked forward to this concert.

Alter Bridge was awesome. They put on a kick ass show. The meet and greet however, feels a little bit impersonal. The access to the soundcheck is awesome and I loved that part, but meeting the band was super quick, like less than a minute. I didn’t expect much, but not even a handshake? I just decided to enjoy it for what it was. They were awesome dudes and I will see them again.

I saw them at the Wiltern in L.A. The staff was nice for the most part. When my friend needed medical attention because she full blown passed out and fell on the floor, they weren’t very prepared, but the medic was a very nice guy who I 10 out of 10 would see if I was dying.

It wasn’t my first AB show and for sure tours after new album pay the need to play new not so famous songs.

And for sure Myles Kennedy (have seen him many times also with Slash) isn’t a “showman”....

But he’s just one of the best singer in the story of rock and Tremonti has written and play “hard” so beautiful songs that the audience seems ecstatic .. and honestly me with them. The audience chorus after “open your eyes” made Myles thrill to the point of making him say that he was experiencing one of his most beautiful performances.

Would definitely like a refund or another show put on WITHOUT the glaring IN YOUR FACE lights throughout the concert. I came to see the band perform...not just hear them which I could have done at home listening to their albums. Many of the other concert goers had the same complaint. Very disappointed that the lights shined on us and not the performers. I have attended many of their past concerts from the beginning of their existance and totally enjoyed them but this was a waste of money and irritating to say the least. Shame on you Alter bridge!

Two months ago, ALTER BRIDGE announced a May run of headline tour dates in support of its recent album "Pawns & Kings" . The new headline dates will kick off on May 6 in Greensboro, North Carolina and wrap up on May 19 in Dothan, Alabama. Special guests SEVENDUST will be joining ALTER BRIDGE on the tour that will make stops in Charlotte, North Carolina (May 9); Chattanooga, Tennessee (May 14) and New Orleans, Louisiana (May 17),to name a few.

ALTER BRIDGE 's "Pawns & Kings" album came out last October. The follow-up to 2019's "Walk The Sky" was once again recorded at Studio Barbarosa in Gotha, Florida with producer Michael "Elvis" Baskette , who has previously worked with SEVENDUST , MAMMOTH WVH and SLASH , among others.

"Pawns & Kings" is comprised of 10 all-new epic tracks that are sure to garner ALTER BRIDGE new fans around the globe while satiating their fervent supporters that have been patiently waiting for new music from the band.

In a recent interview with Consequence , ALTER BRIDGE guitarist Mark Tremonti said that the lyrical inspiration for "Pawns & Kings" didn't come from the COVID-19 shutdown of 2020 and 2021.

"I don't think the album was influenced by the pandemic too much, because for me, I was already on tour with [my eponymous band] TREMONTI and we did a whole album cycle, and I was writing during that tour," he explained. "So, I was out in the world, and the pandemic didn't really effect this record, but maybe the TREMONTI one."

In a separate interview with Louder Than War , Tremonti said about the musical direction of "Pawns & Kings" : "We deliberately tried to do a record where everything was stripped away but the instruments, and I think it worked. The guitars and everything in there just seemed to fill more space. It's funny how there seems to be more atmosphere on a record without all the atmospheric effects. Just the instruments themselves have all this space to breathe, which gives it more room to just be a fuller sound. So that's the only thing that we wanted to do with this record. Other than that, me and Myles [ Kennedy , vocals/guitar] were, again, competing almost to write as many songs as we could before pre-production. I would turn in two songs and he would turn in two songs, and he would turn in three songs and I would turn in three songs. And it was pretty much like a nine-month race to the finish line."

Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed there are “no plans” to take the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv despite tens of thousands of his forces having recently stormed across the border into the region and getting within artillery range of the city.

Speaking on the second day of his two-day tour of China , Putin claimed he had ordered the attack to create a “buffer zone” between Ukrainian soldiers and the Russian region of Belgorod.

When asked if Russian forces planned to take control of Kharkiv city, some 20 miles from the current fighting, Putin said: “As for Kharkiv, there are no such plans as of today.”

While Ukrainian officials and military analysts maintain that Russian forces in the Kharkiv region do not have the manpower or weaponry to take its namesake capital, and that the attack is likely an attempt to create a “buffer zone”, as Putin puts it, as well as draw Ukrainian forces away from other battles further east, there is little doubt that Russia would try to invade the city if it had the capability.

Russia's Putin arrives in China for state visit in a show of unity between the authoritarian allies

Vladimir Putin landed in Beijing on Thursday for a two-day state visit to China in a show of unity between the authoritarian allies.

Putin‘s visit comes as Russia has become more economically dependent on China following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago.

On the eve of the visit, Putin said in an interview with Chinese media that the Kremlin is prepared to negotiate over the conflict in Ukraine. “We are open to a dialogue on Ukraine, but such negotiations must take into account the interests of all countries involved in the conflict, including ours,” Putin was quoted as saying by the official Xinhua News Agency.

The Russian leader’s two-day trip comes as his country’s forces have pressed an offensive in northeastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region that began last week in the most significant border incursion since the full-scale invasion began, forcing almost 8,000 people to flee their homes.

Along with Moscow’s efforts to build on its gains in the nearby Donetsk region, the 2-year-old war has entered a critical stage for Ukraine’s depleted military that is awaiting new supplies of anti-aircraft missiles and artillery shells from the United States.

“We have never refused to negotiate,” Putin was quoted as saying by Xinhua. “We are seeking a comprehensive, sustainable and just settlement of this conflict through peaceful means. We are open to a dialogue on Ukraine, but such negotiations must take into account the interests of all countries involved in the conflict, including ours.”

Ukrainian military moves out troops due to ‘intensive’ enemy fire'

Heavy enemy fire has prompted Ukraine’s military to reposition some troops in the Kupiansk direction to the east of the country’s second largest city, Kharkiv, the General Staff said today.

“In certain districts, as a result of intensive enemy fire, our units regrouped to more advantages positions,” the late-night report said.

Kupiansk was occupied by Russian troops in the first weeks of the February 2022 invasion, but recaptured by Ukrainian forces later in the year. The area has seen heavy fighting in recent months.

Putin says he is ‘grateful to China' for peace efforts on Ukraine war

Vladimir Putin said he spoke to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping about Russian invasion of Ukraine after he reached Beijing for a two-day visit.

“We are grateful to China for its efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis,” he said. The Russian president said he would brief the Chinese leader on the situation in Ukraine where Russian forces are advancing on several fronts.

China had issued a proposal for peace in Ukraine last year but the bid did not conclude and Kyiv has put forth its own peace agreement, seeking ejection of Russian troops from its territory.

Mr Putin’s visit to Beijing comes as Moscow presses forward on a new offensive in Ukraine.

What’s the latest in Ukraine and Russia? Day 813

Good morning.

Intense fighting has continued in the northeast Kharkiv region in what British Defence Minister Grant Shapps said should be a “wake up call” to Ukraine’s allies who have become “distracted” from the war.

“We must back [the Ukrainians] all the time, not just periodically,” Mr Shapps said, adding that a $60bn US military package “took too long to get through Congress”. It was blocked for seven months by Donald Trump-supporting Republicans keen to shore up more funds for securing their border with Mexico.

Ukrainian war tracker DeepState said Russian forces had advanced into a stretch of land between the villages of Hlyboke and Lyptsi, which is less than 20 miles from the region’s capital Kharkiv, home to some 1.3 million civilians.

An aid worker in Kharkiv city running a shelter for evacuees from Lyptsi told me on Wednesday that the civilians could hear the bombs “coming closer and closer” as they fled the village.

In the fight next-door, a local Ukrainian official said Russian forces had entered the streets of Vovchansk, a town some 35 miles from Kharkiv city.

In southern Ukraine, Russia fired three deadly glide bombs, nicknamed “building destroyers”, at the centre of Kherson city, injuring at least 19 people and destroying several homes.

“The city centre of Kherson. In the middle of the day, three Russian aerial bombs hit a residential area,” regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on Telegram yesterday.

In China, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, where the Russian leader said he was “grateful” to China for its efforts to end the war in Ukraine, referring to their peace proposal that was dismissed by Ukraine as simply a recital of the Kremlin’s demands.

Xi lauds China-Russia ties as Putin arrives in Beijing

Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged to work with counterpart Vladimir Putin to “rejuvenate” their countries as the pair started a day of talks in Beijing, saying China would “always be a good partner” of Russia, according to Chinese state media.

Putin arrived on Thursday for a two-day state visit that will include detailed talks on Ukraine, Asia, energy and trade with Xi, his most powerful political backer and fellow geopolitical rival of the United States.

“The China-Russia relationship today is hard-earned, and the two sides need to cherish and nurture it,” Xi told Putin as they met in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.

“China is willing to ... jointly achieve the development and rejuvenation of our respective countries, and work together to uphold fairness and justice in the world.”

China and Russia declared a “no limits” partnership in February 2022 when Putin visited Beijing just days before he sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine, triggering the deadliest land war in Europe since World War Two.

A compilation of Russia’s latest propaganda claims …

Below is a compilation of the latest Russian claims regarding its war in Ukraine.

The claims cannot be verified but we repost them to show you the mood inside Moscow and the messages they are trying to convey to their own public. Much of the propaganda they push is intended to give the impression to the Russian population that the West is funding a proxy war against Russia in Ukraine and that, despite this, Russia is nevertheless succeeding in its war.

Russia’s Federal Security Service has claimed it has detained Ukrainian agents in Crimea, and that one of them admitted to having transferred information on air defence systems protecting the Crimean bridge, state news agency RIA reported.

The speaker of Russia’s State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, meanwhile, said this morning that Ukraine was dragging the US and Europe into a big war, and Western leaders needed to avoid a major global catastrophe.

Vladimir Putin arrives in China to meet Xi Jinping as West watches with growing concern

China has rolled out the red carpet to welcome Russian president Vladimir Putin for a potentially consequential and heavily symbolic state visit that will be closely watched in the West.

Mr Putin’s second visit in less than a year comes as Western nations, led by the US, are putting pressure on China to stop throwing its economic and industrial weight behind Russia’s war in Ukraine .

The two-day trip is Mr Putin’s first abroad since starting his new term as president earlier this month.

Russian forces trying to take Lyptsi village in Ukraine's Kharkiv region -RIA

Russian forces are on the approaches to the village of Lyptsi, in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, and have started work to seize it, Russian state news agency RIA reported, citing a local Russian-installed official.

The claim cannot be verified and Russian officials often issue premature reports - but civilians fleeing Lyptsi over the past few days told aid workers in Kharkiv city that they could hear the bombs coming “closer and closer”.

The latest update from Ukrainian war tracker DeepState, known to have close ties to the military, suggests Russia forces are still more than three miles away from the village.

The small village of Lyptsi is around 16 miles north of the city centre of Kharkiv, the region’s namesake capital that is home to some 1.3 million citizens.

Ukraine’s Zelensky cancels foreign visits as Putin’s forces advance around Kharkiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has cancelled all his upcoming foreign trips as he looks to concentrate on Russia’s advance in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region .

It comes as US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced a new $2 billion (£1.6bn) weapons deal during a visit to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv , before suggesting Washington could sign a bilateral agreement with Ukraine in the coming weeks.

Mr Blinken did not go into detail about what would be included in the latest pledge, which will be drawn from the $61bn package passed by Congress last month.

A cinema tour of Moscow - tips for true film buffs

New Delhi [India], May 25: The beautiful, eclectic and colourful city of Moscow , witness to so many historical epochs, is always taking part in movie shoots - its streets, squares and buildings in a range of architectural styes are being used as settings for Russian and international films. In April, a film crew led by director Venkat Prabhu was at work on Moscow 's streets: scenes from the Russian capital will be used in his action film "The Greatest of All Time". Moscow has also attracted the attention of other Indian producers looking for a film set: following several business missions to the city held by Moscow Agency of Creative Industries, Indian filmmakers are planning their first shoots in the city. Below, we describe some of the Moscow sights which will soon be seen by Indian viewers and the most interesting locations in the city for committed cinephiles.

Cult film locations

The Russian capital very recently became the setting of the Indian action film "The Greatest of All Time" by director Venkat Prabhu: it was shot on Manezhnaya Square, the chase and gun-fight scenes were filmed in Lyalin, Barashevsky and Maly Kazenny Lanes, on Patriarch Bridge and in other Moscow streets. A spy thriller starring Vijay in the role of an Indian secret agent, it will be the first foreign film produced via the Moscow digital film platform, a new service for filmmakers. Foreign directors can use it to select filming locations, equipment and props online. In the words of Venkat Prabhu, working with Moscow colleagues is an absolute delight. "Here in Moscow , they have a really good team", he said. "They are brilliant. For example, we were filming a motorcycle chase here and it worked out really well: watch out for it in the movie, you'll love it". The film crew of "The Greatest of All Time" spent around two weeks in Moscow . In the film, a retired secret agent returns to Moscow to complete an unfinished mission from the past. "To be honest, few Indian films have been shot in Moscow , and I wanted to give our viewers this experience", said Prabhu, explaining his choice of location for the main action. "We all studied Russian culture and history at school, and it is so nice to be here now and to show this city to our viewers. Moscow plays a very important role in our film".

Moscow has repeatedly been chosen as a film set by foreign directors who prefer real locations to studio mockups. For example, part of "The Bourne Supremacy" - the sequel to the thriller "The Bourne Identity" - was filmed in Kiev railway station, and the stunning car chase was filmed around the Moscow Youth Palace near the Frunzenskaya metro station. The villains in the film race through Ivanovskaya Hill, Rozhdestvensky Boulevard, Trubnaya Square and along the Raushkaya and Taras Shevchenko Embankments.

In the late 1980s, on Red Square, Arnold Schwarzenegger played an incorruptible policeman in Walter Hill's movie "Red Heat". It was still quite difficult to get filming permission at that time, and a result the scene was shot from handheld cameras in a bit of a rush. But the two main heroes, Red Square and the great Arnie, went down in history together.

By 1994, it was easier for Alan Metter to get the Moscow government's approval to film the final episode "Police Academy" in the city. While the "good cops" together with the Russian police track down a villain, the viewers can enjoy views of Red Square and the Mausoleum, the Bolshoi Theatre, Novodevichi Monastery, Gorky Park and other famous Moscow landmarks.

In 2014, Paul Anderson went further - quite literally: his film crew was not only given five hours of creative access to Red Square but was also permitted to film in the Moscow Metro. His film "Resident Evil: Retribution" features shots of the Arbatskaya station. Some film critics to this day believe that Andersen owed his good luck to Milla Jovovich and her Russan roots.

Film art masterpieces from around the world in their original languages

Moscow plays host to one of the oldest international film shows - the Moscow International Film Festival, which has been held since 1935. The first chairman of the Festival jury was the great director Sergey Eisenstein, and since then it has featured Richard Geer, Luc Besson, Robert de Niro, Theo Angelopoulos, Kim Ki-duk, Alan Parker, Emir Kusturica and other global cinema stars. MFF's red carpet has been graced by Michelangelo Atonioni, Sophia Loren and Elisabeth Taylor. Since 1999, the festival has been held annually, and this year presented its 46th international film show programme. This year, India was represented by the Tamil melodrama "Seven Seas Seven Hills" from producer Ram, and by film critic Indu Shrikent, who was a member of the festival jury. One of the awards made by the jury was went to "Need to Shoot Movie s About Love", a film which was shot in India and got a special mention "For reflecting gentleness in the waters of the River Ganges". True connoisseurs of festival cinema strive to attend the Moscow International Film Festival year after year, and often time their visits to Moscow to coincide with famous film shows. In recent years, MIFF has been held every April, but it is best to keep an eye on the festival announcements. The films are traditionally shown in their original language with subtitles, so that foreign visitors can enjoy watching moves in their own language.

An alternative to guided tours - Moscow 's cinemas

Tour ists rarely visit Moscow 's cinemas, which is such a shame, because many of them have retained their historic appeal, unique decor and atmosphere. Furthermore, many of them show films in foreign languages, so you could well spend a cold, rainy day in a cozy cinema hall like a real Muscovite. Amongst the cinema must-sees are Moskino Fakel (Shosse Entuziastov 15/16) - one of the oldest cinemas in the city, which is reviving and maintaining the arthouse cinema tradition. It was originally opened on the ground floor of a residential Stalin-era skyscraper, and since being refurbished it has retained its charm as an urban haunt for fans of arthouse films.

Another strategic meeting place for Moscow cinephiles is the Illusion cinema, located inside one of the Stalin-era towers (Kotelnicheskaya Naberezhnaya 1/15). Here, in historical interiors amongst stucco moldings and bar-reliefs, you can watch unique archive films from the State Cinema Fund, international classics and contemporary indie and festival films in their original languages. The building is stylized as a Soviet cinema and decorated with copies of old posters and photographs from famous movies.

GUM - the Main Department Store - is a wonderful place for guided tours and shopping, but film lovers know it and love it for its vintage cinema in the heart of Moscow (Red Square 3). The cinema was created by special order of GUM's architects, applying the very highest acoustic standards and refined theatre decoration. And there is plenty to admire while you wait for your film to start: early 20th century stucco moldings and the famous crystal chandeliers, which have been treated with a special chemical to stop them reverberating in tune with high- or low-frequency sounds. During film showings, the cinema's enormous windows are covered by stately velvet curtains, and instead of the usual seats, visitors recline in soft velvet chairs or spacious velvet sofas. In one hall, there in a bar where they serve Soviet-style cakes, sandwiches, champagne and lemonade in place of the usual fast-food snacks.

Moscow 's legendary Khudozhestvenny cinema (Arbatskaya Square 14) can be regarded as an architectural landmark, a place for guided tours, and as a unique and memorable place to watch a film during a visit to the city. Tickets can cost as much as $100, because here you are not only watching an ordinary film while you fiddle with your popcorn - you are in a place visited by Lev Tolstoy and Sergey Yesenin, and were Sergey Eisenstein's film "Battleship Potemkin" was first shown. Several years ago, the building was thoroughly renovated using the blueprints from architect Franz Shechtel. Inside the cinema, they run specially designed tours, and visitors are thrilled to get their photos taken against the backdrop of the famous undulating staircase and the cinema's trademark bright-scarlet chairs.

Moscow 's film sets - complete immersion in the world of cinema

For a true movie buff, no trip to Moscow could be complete without a visit to Mosfilm (Ulitsa Mosfilmovskaya 1) - the huge film company spread across an area of 30 hectares, where wonderful Soviet films were shot and which continues to make Russian movies today. The grounds of Mosfilm are like a fantasy town with streets and squares from different historical epochs, its own piece of old-world Saint Petersburg and old Moscow , provincial Russian towns and even Paris. Mosfilm's museum contains some genuine rarities, including a collection of retro cars, vintage carriages, movies props, costumers and bits of scenery, stands with rare camera equipment and even the original Worker and Kolkhoz Woman sculpture by Vera Mukhina, familiar to all fans of Soviet film. This duo of Soviet heroes became the film studio's emblem and features in the intro sequence to every film it has made.

You can now complete your fascinating film tour in Moscow 's recently created Moskino cinema park (Krasnaya Pakhra, Quarter 107). The outdoor film set area is still under construction, but once complete it will extend across approximately 320 hectares and become the biggest cinema complex in Europe. The first phase is already open to filmmakers and tourists, however. Here you can take a walk around the streets of a 1940s town on the outskirts of Moscow , imagine yourself as a peasant in a little Russan village or a fisherman in a fishing port, or else as a resident of Wild West cowboy town. The Reichstag still stands on one cinema street, along with the still-intact wall dividing East and West Germany, and "bits" of European cities indistinguishable from the originals. In the near future, a 12th-century Kremlin will be added, along with medieval structures and pavilions representing a railway station and an airport.

Film buffs cannot leave Moscow without taking a look at the reconstruction of film director Sergey Eisenstein's office in the Cinema Museum at the National Economic Achievements #exhibition (Prospekt Mira 119, Pavilion 36, Dziga Vertov cinema hall). The museum space itself is a real journey through the history of Russian cinema, from the fairground era via avant-garde experiments to the Stalinist period and wartime cinema, followed by the thaw years, indie cinema and the perestroika cinema boom of the 1980s. You will be guided along the way by manuscripts, posters, commemorative items and drawings, and vintage cinema equipment. Eisenstein's office occupies a separate room in the museum. The historic building where the director lived in Moscow has not survived, but his room has been recreated using household items and personal effects from his Moscow home, along with the classical engravings and books amongst which he grew up. The eclectic furniture, coloured walls and interior design have all been faithfully reproduced to convey the vivid artistic atmosphere that Eisenstein created in his office.

Come to Moscow , study its cinema life and make your own film here about your trip around Russia's surprising and diverse capital city!

Excellent tour guide - Joelle. Our group had an excellent time and learned so much about San Francisco. She kept it safe and fun. Thank you!

Guy (white, young, tall, maybe new to working there) who helped us out didn't introduce himself, and had a condescending tone when talking to us when he thought we were tourists. We mentioned how we were from East Bay when he asked us that. He didn't mention the deposit and when another girl worker took over, she brought it up ($100 for one person, $400 for 4 of us..). Thankfully this was only if we lost the bike. The guy went out to get the bikes for us and we saw the bikes had bald wheels...This definitely made it more difficult to get to the Golden Gate Bridge. Make sure to do some research before going to this place, or any have bikes that you can rent.

What a phenomenal experience to experience San Francisco and all the sights it has to offer via electric bike! Our tour guide was amazing and we thank him for that. We learned a lot about the city and got to take some amazing quality pictures. Took a ferry ride back at the end of our journey as well. Would totally do this again!

No reservations needed, although we did get a discount for ordering online in advance. Set up was straight forward - they showed us a short video about how to bike from Fisherman's Wharf to Sausalito and then we took off and did it. Place is across the street from bike path so super simple. The bikes are sturdy and durable, which means they are easy to get comfortable with but not fast. There was a front pack for stuff and a lock as well. It was a simple, short ride to go over the Golden Gate Bridge and take the ferry back from Sausalito although it took longer than we expected due to the wind. Check in was also simple - we were out of there in less than five minutes.

Did no prior search and spontaneously rented two bikes. Staff was very nice and energetic people, however, I had an "ok" experience. Almost got charged an extra hour due to a mistake from the staff, make sure to double check your receipt and how long you've ridden the bike. We rode for about 2 hours and 20 minutes, I guess they round up to the 3rd hour. Whatever, probably won't be coming back as this location is very far from golden gate bridge, go head over to sports basement.

This is our second time using Blazing Saddles, both times we have had a great experience. Mikey is awesome! Everyone is super nice and helpful. Would definitely recommend this company for biking over the bridge!

We rented bikes from here and cycled across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito. It was a pleasant ride about ten miles long. The hills to get to the bridge were pretty challenging, although I have only biked a handful of times in the past decade. Helmets are included with the rental, which is great. They also provide ferry tickets to get back to SF, which you can choose to use. We were able to drop off our bikes after hours with the garage code. A cable that did not serve a functional purpose and was attached to my bike broke off pretty soon into the ride. The staff were okay. They don't have a restroom for customers, which is ridiculous considering we are paying a decent fee for the rental and about to embark on a ride that is possibly all day long. I would expect a restroom and water fountain to be the bare minimum for a bike rental shop. They are clearly getting a steady stream of business.

The rental was smooth an reasonable. I grabbed a mountain bike for a couple of days, it was a great bike in great condition. Only real complaint: it was challenging to drive over and pick up a bike due to parking. Maybe have a curbside delivery option.

Best of the Best.. This place rents very expensive Ebikes for a decent price for those of us who need a little help. I really enjoyed my experience with this company and it's staff. Speaking of the staff, they were GREAT... The ease of renting, the ease of paying, the quality of the bike I rented, this place deserves 6 stars..

I didn't want this to come this far, but the manager ignored my refund request. So I requested one over email, and all the manager wanted to do was talk it over the phone, but I put everything that needed to be said and they still ignored it. I'll try to keep it short: We had a two hour rental with a trailer. Not a lot of time, and we made it clear we didn't need ferry tickets nor to cross the Golden Gate Bridge yet there was pressure for that and even some water. After choosing the bikes, they didn't explain the controls/speeds. Also they didn't explain how to fasten out our child into the trailer because of the many straps. They had an attitude of "you should know the deal" but we didn't and they walked away, we lost time outside trying to fiddle with the straps outside the place. The worst part is this: After coming back, they did not help hold this heavy trailer going down the ramp into their garage. 2 employees. Not one, but TWO! They were completely oblivious, my wife said she heard that someone told them to help but if help is just walking alongside that's not help at all because when the trailer went down the ramp, the weight of this hit me on the leg, twisted the bike and I got pushed to the ground and fell. I was trying to get my son out of the trailer but all they cared about at this point was the bike. They didn't hold anything. I was furious and beyond pissed not a shred of consideration, regard of safety (for my son), and sympathy. This wasn't outside, this was in their property, in their workplace. After that, and no apology they had the nerve to call us up to finish off the process only to ask us if we had gotten water from them. If they had a record of that, or at the least were somewhat of decent human beings they would've remember. But no... No heart, sympathy, concern, regard for safety, and care for your experience. It's a shame that this cocky place represents San Francisco to tourists. Look for other small family owned shops instead.

The Kinks’ Ray Davies on the song he wants played at his funeral

Since the 1980s, Ray Davies has intermittently led a seminar for aspiring songwriters through England’s Arvon Foundation — a side hustle he landed, of course, as a result of the dozens of classic tunes he penned as frontman of the Kinks, including “You Really Got Me,” “All Day and All of the Night,” “Tired of Waiting for You,” “Stop Your Sobbing,” “Sunny Afternoon,” “Waterloo Sunset,” “Lola” and “Come Dancing,” among many others.

Yet ask Davies, 78, which of these was the first to make him feel like he was a real songwriter, and he’ll tell you he’s not sure he’s one even now.

“What I usually say to the students before I start the course is, ‘I can’t teach you anything,’” he says, chuckling dryly, over Zoom from his home in the U.K. “‘Real songwriter’ gives me an image of a guy from Tin Pan Alley or the Brill Building — like Neil Sedaka. I think I’m still trying to find out if I’m that good.”

An English rock group in the 1960s

Caveat thus offered, Davies agreed to look back at — and to classify — some of the high points of his career with the Kinks, which he formed in 1963 with his younger brother Dave Davies on guitar and which became one of the key acts of the British Invasion (at least until they were temporarily banned from entering the U.S. in 1965 amid a dispute with the American musicians’ union).

Though never as popular as the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, the Kinks covered no less musical ground, blending elements of rock, folk, pop, country, R&B and British music hall in detailed songs about the lives of English people; the band, rounded out at the beginning by drummer Mick Avory and bassist Pete Quaife, also helped lay the groundwork for garage rock and heavy metal, thanks in large part to Dave’s blistering guitar work. Among their punk successors were the Buzzcocks and most famously the Jam; later inheritors include Yo La Tengo, Fountains of Wayne and any number of acts associated with the Britpop movement of the mid-1990s.

The Kinks, who broke up in 1996 but who seem always on the verge of reuniting, collect 36 of their songs on a new compilation titled “The Journey — Part 1.” A second volume is due later this year.

The most British song in the Kinks’ catalog: “A Well Respected Man” (1965)

alter bridge tour

In an era when many of his peers had their sights set on America, Davies wrote with remarkable sympathy about working-class Brits — about their goals and their resentments and about the sometimes-crushing weight of the country’s traditions. “While lots of bands sang in American accents, we were singing in London accents,” he says. He could also rail against the U.K.’s upper crust, as in this crisp but savage portrait of a privileged guy eager to “grab his father’s loot when pater passes on.”

The song that makes Davies think of his mother: “Waterloo Sunset” (1967)

alter bridge tour

“Unlike many other rockers, I always cared what my parents thought of my music,” says Davies, who adds that, even as a younger man, “I was writing songs for older people.” He recalls playing “Waterloo Sunset” — a gently psychedelic pop tune in which the narrator watches two lovers cross a bridge over the River Thames — for his mother and his older sister Rose and being buoyed by their enthusiasm. The song, which paints a modest scene in almost unbearably pretty colors, “says a lot about people of [my mother’s] postwar generation living in austerity in London. I was a strange kid, not very sociable, but I think with this song she finally understood me a bit.”

The song that makes him think of his father: “ Alcohol ” (1971) A “true Kinkophile,” the singer says, Davies’ father “would have related to this tale of the decline of a philanderer” from the Kinks’ bluesy-rootsy “Muswell Hillbillies” album, which was inspired by the North London neighborhood in which the Davies brothers grew up.

The song that most rips off one of Davies’ heroes: “ So Mystifying ” (1964) To Davies’ ears, this propulsive cut from the Kinks’ self-titled debut makes clear the debt he and his brother owed Chuck Berry, whom he calls “one of the underrated poets in American culture.”

The most depressing song he ever wrote: “Dead End Street” (1966)

alter bridge tour

“What are we living for? / Two-roomed apartment on the second floor,” Davies sings in this stark hard-times lament. “Yet it’s not actually meant to be depressing,” he clarifies, adding that he thinks of the song as “musical journalism: You’re conveying the bleakness of a real situation through an art form.”

Two long-haired brothers perform in a rock band in the 1970s

The most misanthropic song he ever wrote: “ 20th Century Man ” (1971) Davies came up with “Muswell Hillbillies’” stomping opener — “I’m a 20th century man but I don’t wanna die here,” he sings — while pondering the “breakdown of community,” as he puts it, that led to London’s bombardment during World War II. “Communities are still breaking down now but for other reasons,” he says. “You go into a restaurant expecting to see people having dinner with one another and they’re all looking at their iPhones.” He laughs. “That’s me being a bit grumpy.”

The best riff Davies ever created: “You Really Got Me” (1964)

alter bridge tour

“Gotta be that one, right?” he says of the indelible two-note figure — composed by Ray on piano before Dave brought it to guitar — that not only took the Kinks to No. 1 on the British singles chart but also launched the career of Van Halen when the L.A. band covered “You Really Got Me” a decade and a half later.

The easiest song he ever wrote: “You Really Got Me” (1964) “As a songwriter, I’d probably write more lyrics today,” Davies says. “What’s it saying? She’s really got him going, and he’s crazy about her. Very unsubtle in many respects. But that’s the whole point. I didn’t think about the lyrics. I just made them up and sang them.”

The song he never expected to become a hit: “ Tired of Waiting for You ” (1965) Davies remembers having a severe chest cold the day he recorded the vocal for this wistful chart-topper. “So I went in thinking I’d just satisfy the commitment to the record label,” he says. “But I’m pleased with the performance, don’t get me wrong. If I’d tried too hard, maybe it would’ve gone over the top.”

The song he thought would be a hit but wasn’t: “Ev’rybody’s Gonna Be Happy” (1965)

alter bridge tour

The Kinks modeled this spirited dance number on the music of Motown’s house band, the Funk Brothers, and in particular the intricate drumming of Uriel Jones, who’d become friendly with the Kinks’ Avory. “I told Mick it should be written around this drum pattern like Uriel would do,” Davies says. “He could somehow make a drum part into a hook. So we tried to get Mick to do it, but he couldn’t.” The single, released as the follow-up to “Tired of Waiting for You,” stalled out at No. 17 on the British chart. Says Davies: “Maybe it was too intricate a pattern for rock ’n’ roll. It’s not Mick’s fault — I wrote the bloody song.”

A elderly man holding a medal in a case

The cover of a Kinks song he loves the most: Peggy Lee’s “ I Go to Sleep ” (1965) Davies likes Van Halen’s take on “You Really Got Me,” and he admires “Stop Your Sobbing” by the Pretenders, whose Chrissie Hynde he went on to have a child with. His favorite cover of one of his tunes, though, is Lee’s jazzy version of “I Go to Sleep,” which “made me feel kind of warm inside,” he says, not least because it impressed one of his sisters, who was a huge fan of the pre-rock pop star.

The song he’d like played at his funeral: “Days” (1968)

alter bridge tour

“Thank you for the days, those endless days / Those sacred days you gave me,” Davies sings in this chiming farewell that he wrote for (but ultimately cut from) the first of the Kinks’ several concept albums, “The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society.” “But that’s only if I have to pick one of my songs,” he says. “If not, I choose ‘SOS’ by ABBA.”

Grayson Murray, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, has died at the age of 30.

The American’s passing was announced by the PGA Tour on Saturday – 24 hours after he withdrew towards the end of his second round the Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas. He had told his playing partners he was feeling unwell.

Commissioner Jay Monahan said he was left 'lost for words' when he broke the news of Murray's death on Saturday. Murray's parents, Eric and Terry, confirmed in a statement Sunday that their son had died by suicide.

'We were devastated to learn - and are heartbroken to share - that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning,' Monahan said of the world No 58.

'The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.'

Only last month Murray's fiancée, Christiana, caddied for him during the Par 3 contest ahead of The Masters. The couple was reportedly due to marry in the spring of 2024. He  had previously spoken about his struggles with alcohol and his mental health.

'My parents have been through hell and back basically for the last six years with me, fighting some mental stuff,' he once revealed.

'It's not easy on me and the people around me that love me. They don't like to see me down and they've been my No 1 supporters and everyone has their battles.

'Sometimes people are able to hide them and function and sometimes you're not. I think our society is getting better now about accepting that it's OK to not be OK.'

He added: 'I'm not ashamed that I go through depression and anxiety. I know I've helped people out in the past just through my social media DMs - people messaging me - and I can use my platform to continue to help with things like that.'

At the Sony Open in Hawaii in January, when he won his second PGA Tour title, the North Carolina-native gave a now-poignant interview about hard times away from the course.

'My rookie year was 2017 - I was young and thought I was invincible and wasn't doing the correct stuff off the course to really give myself the best chance to succeed out here,' he said.

'Over the years, I've given in a few times and then right when I try to give up, someone gives me a little bit more inspiration, saying: "Hey you got it, you can do it"

'Those are just the people that are close to me that I really lean on in hard times and I just have to keep pushing through. That's the only way I know how.'

He admitted there were 'multiple low points,' adding: 'I've obviously been vocal about the alcohol use in the past and I'm over eight months sober and I have a beautiful fiancée that I love so much, who's so supportive of me and my parents are so supportive of me.

'My caddie, Jay (Green), is one of my biggest cheerleaders. And it just makes everything so easy when I get out here inside the ropes. When everyone in my circle is just really pulling for me and they're right there with me when I do have those hard days. And I still have hard days but I feel a lot more at peace inside the ropes now.'

Green released a heartbreaking statement shortly after Murray's death was confirmed. 'Grayson was the absolute best. Not only was he an incredible, thoughtful and generous boss, he was an even better friend,' he said.

'He truly would do anything for anyone. He has the best family, and my heart goes out to them. We will all miss him deeply.'

Earlier this week, Murray shot a two-under-par 68 in his opening round but was five over for his second round when he pulled out of the tournament.

Play continued at Colonial on Saturday, even after the devastating news, with Monahan revealing: 'I reached out to Grayson's parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play.

'They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.

'The PGA Tour has grief counselors available at both tournament sites (this week's PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour events), as well as virtually for those not in the field. I am en route to Ft. Worth and will share more information when we can.'

Murray was a brilliant prospect, winning three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships between 2006 and 2008. He made his first cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at the age of just 16 and was the top-ranked golfer in his age group.

'He has the best family, and my heart goes out to them. We will all miss him deeply,' Green said

'He has the best family, and my heart goes out to them. We will all miss him deeply,' Green said

He then turned professional back in 2015 before going on to win twice on the PGA Tour. Murray picked up his first title in 2017 at the Barbasol Championship, when he was just 24. His second and final title came in January in Hawaii.

Murray tied for 43rd at last week's PGA Championship  and ended the 2024 Masters in 51st.

European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald also paid tribute to Murray, writing on social media on Saturday: 'Truly devastating news that Grayson Murray has passed away.

'He asked me for some advice on how to play Augusta a few months ago, last week I saw him at the PGA Championship, life truly is precious. My condolences and prayers to his whole family that they may find some peace.'
