Kofu is surrounded by mountains, with Mount Fuji, Mount Kimpu, Mount Shirane and Mount Kai-koma enclosing Yamanashi Prefecture's capital. An easy day trip, Kofu is only 90 minutes by train from Tokyo.

Visitors can savor the city's renowned local fruits and fine wine, and take a dip in hot springs such as Yumura Spa within the city to rejuvenate the body.

Kofu Castle lies just a short distance from Kofu Station — cherry blossom trees transform the usual lush greenery around the castle into a pink sea, making the 16th century castle even more impressive.

For students looking for success in studies, Takeda Shrine is the go-to place. The shrine is dedicated to Takeda Shingen, who was a feudal lord in the area during the 1500s and revered as a determined historical figure. A festival is held annually on the first weekend of April and is one of the biggest events in Kofu.

East of the city is Kai-Zenkoji Temple, a Buddhist Jodo sect temple that was said to have been founded by Shingen in 1558. Its main attractions are its large entrance gate, a great bell and imposing pagoda.

Apart from historical attractions, Kofu is also home to the Yamanashi Prefectural Science Center and Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art. The former is an observatory with interactive displays that are well-suited for a family day out, while the latter is filled with paintings and sculptures from international and local artists alike.

Kofu is not limited to urban sights, as the Shosenkyo Gorge is only 30 minutes away by bus. It offers spectacular views of the Sen-ga-Taki Falls and the Arakawa River cutting through the steep gorge.

Kofu City and Shosenkyo Valley: A Journey in the Mountains of Yamanashi Prefecture

The city of Kofu (甲府市), located in the northeast of Yamanashi Prefecture, is known for its deep nature and its many nearby mountains. A 1.5-hour express train ride from Shinjuku Station, Kofu is an ideal day trip (or more) away from Tokyo. However, despite its proximity to the capital, Kofu remains somewhat unknown to foreign tourists, making it an easy destination to venture off the beaten track.

Kofu is famous for its Shosenkyo valley and its breathtaking view of Mount Fuji . It will delight hiking and nature lovers. History buffs will also find happiness as this city is still linked to feudal Japan, seen today through the Shingen-ko festival or the gorgeous Maizuru castle. At last, the gourmets will appreciate the local agriculture, with its numerous vineyards and orchards, a good opportunity to taste delicious fresh fruits, or even to participate in their picking. Follow me in the heart of the mountains of Yamanashi prefecture!

Best Places to Visit in Kofu

There are many sightseeing options in Kofu city. Though I didn’t have enough time to visit as many places as I would have liked, here are my favorite spots I’d like to share with you below:

Mount Fuji and the Chureido Pagoda in Japan

Tokyo Wide Pass

3 days of unlimited train rides in Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures with this discount pass! Perfect for day trips from Tokyo to nearby attractions like Mt. Fuji, Nikko, and Karuizawa.

Walking in the Footsteps of the Tokugawa Samurai Clan at Kofu Maizuru Castle Park

Did you know that there is a castle in Kofu? Follow me and let’s return to the past!

Maizuru Kofu castle in Japan

Let’s talk a bit about history to understand why this place is so important. Maizuru Castle was built by the Tokugawa clan by order of the famous daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi around 1583. At that time, it was the second-largest castle in the Kanto area after the capital. However, around 1877, it was partially destroyed by fire and remained abandoned for a while at the end of the shogunate. Rebuilt in the 20th century, it was moved to make room for the current Kofu station, built on the ruins of the old castle wall. The park of Maizuru Castle is now located right next to the station. Although the castle’s location has changed, the walls are still original, erected more than 400 years ago, and are considered a national treasure.

The view from Maizuru Kofu castle

The particularity of this castle lies in its location: the site offers a beautiful view of the famous Mount Fuji, the city, and its surrounding mountains. It is a particularly photogenic place not to be missed during your visit. Of course, you have to be lucky and have a sunny day to enjoy the view fully, but the show is breathtaking when the sky is clear!

Fuji view from Maizuru Kofu castle

The park also contains the Yamanote-gomon gate on the north side of the castle and station, where there is a small exhibition hall with a viewing platform where you can see Mount Fuji and Yagura Tower. And guess what? Admission to the park is free , and the castle grounds are home to many cherry trees , which will make your visit unforgettable if you go during the cherry blossom season .

Takeda Shrine, Following in the Footsteps of the Great Takeda Shingen

Takeda Shrine is an important historical spot related to, you probably guessed because of his name: Takeda Shingen.

Takeda shrine, a traditional Japanese shrine in Japan

This Shinto shrine was built in 1919 in honor of Takeda Shingen, the protector samurai of the Kai region (now Yamanashi Prefecture) who is best known as one of the most valiant samurai of the Clan Wars era (1477-1573). He was the only one who was able to compete with Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu in their efforts to conquer Japan, and many wonder what would have happened if he had not died suddenly, as the unification of Japan might have taken a completely different direction. The Takeda Shrine was specifically built on the remains of the fortified residence of the Takeda clan, which gives this place great historical significance. Inside the shrine, there is a real treasure room. There are many artifacts of the period (armor, fans, etc.), including the Yoshioka-Ichimonji sword designated a national treasure.

I’ll give you a heads up that, at first glance, this shrine may not be as spectacular as other shrines. If you are not particularly interested in the history of Japan, this may not be the place to visit.

takeda shrine, a great place to know more about Takeda Shingen

However, the more curious will find happiness in the museum opened recently in front of the shrine. There you can find more explanations about Takeda Shingen and the life he lived. The museum puts the history of the Takeda clan into perspective. I recommend that you start visiting the museum before the shrine. This way, you will understand better the context and will leave you with the impression of walking in the footsteps of the samurai.

The permanent exhibition is free, and the temporary exhibition costs only a few hundred yen . There is even a cafe and a souvenir store inside the museum, ideal for a short break.

In the end, even if a visit to the shrine is not necessarily a “must” visit, I’d say it’s worth the time to stop by the museum — especially during the springtime when the road leading to the shrine is strewn with cherry trees, making the visit very pleasant.

Not far from the shrine, you will find on your way several food stalls where you can enjoy delicious Shingen mochi with kinako (glutinous rice cake with roasted soybean powder) or cool down with mochi ice cream in the summertime.

Best Things to Do in Kofu

If you are tired of sightseeing and would like to take the time to enjoy some activities, here is a list of my favorite activities to do in Kofu!

Hiking in the Shosenkyo Valley, One of the Most Beautiful Natural Parks in Japan

If you are not a big fan of hiking (like me) you might want to skip this spot, but this part was actually the highlight of my whole trip, and it was definitely worth it.

Shosenkyo Gorge and autumn colors in Japan

Officially listed as a national heritage site in June 2020, Shosenkyo Valley is a real hidden treasure and very popular for Japanese hikers. Here, you will virtually be in the heart of the mountains and forest, in a world close to the magical forest of Mononoke Princess. Not as famous to foreign tourists, Shosenkyo Valley is a real peaceful haven, especially during its famous red and orange autumn leaves. We had the chance to visit the valley in the fall, and it was such a great experience!

Shosenkyo Gorge and its wonderful fall leaves during autumn in Japan

There are three bus stops to get to the Shosenkyo Valley: “Shosenkyo-guchi” at the beginning of the gorge, “Greenline Shosenkyo” where the most picturesque part of the gorge begins, and finally “Shosenkyo taki ue” near the falls. Although it was tempting to take the bus to the end of the route, we motivated ourselves and chose the hiking path because it is the best way to discover the valley. Especially since the climb only takes about two hours (for about 4 kilometers).

We started our journey at Nagatoro bridge. On the road, we met all kinds of rocks in the shape of animals (bear, monkey, etc.) which we found very humorous before quickly finding ourselves on the Ai no Hashi, also known as the Bridge of Love. Legend says that if you cross this bridge with the person you love, you will spend a long and happy life with this person. Personally, I’m a romantic who likes these kinds of legends, so my husband and I had lots of fun crossing this bridge.

We also enjoyed the Yakumo shrine at the top of the cable car, which is also known to bring luck in love. Many people come here to pray for their happiness in marriage. An anecdote that will perhaps make beautiful stories to tell when you will come back home!

Yakumo shrine, a traditional religious site in Japan with autumn leaves

After walking a few minutes, we arrived at the Sengataki waterfall . It is about 30 meters high, and it is one of the most famous sites of the hike in the Shosenkyo valley. Lost in the heart of the forest, we let ourselves be lulled by the sound of the water. We even had the chance to see a rainbow appear over the water. Such a magical atmosphere! There is a staircase leading to a small shopping alley not far from the waterfall, an ideal place to buy souvenirs or to take a break for a snack or meal.

Sengataki falls in Japan and its rainbow

After a few more minutes of climbing, we took the cable car to reach the observation platform of Mount Rakanji, more than 1000 meters high. The round trip costs 1300 yens, and the journey takes about 5 minutes.

From the observatory, the view of Mount Fuji and the surrounding mountains is stunning. I was motivated during the hike by telling myself that with some more effort and a little bit of luck, I would see Mount Fuji. After the effort, the view was the most beautiful reward, made even more so until I reached Yasaburo-dake peak. On a rocky platform, we feel like we were on top of the world with a 360° panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, including Mount Fuji.

Mount Fuji view from Yasaburo-dake in Japan

I must confess that I am usually not a big fan of hiking. But believe me when I tell you that Shosenkyo Valley is a must if you pass by Kofu. The various hiking trails are easily accessible (with good hiking shoes, of course), and the scenery is truly amazing. The day passes without you even noticing it. There are a few rest areas, restaurants, and souvenir stores along the way, where you can take a break at a reasonable price. If you come to Kofu, give it a try!

Discover Local Agriculture and Fresh Fruit Picking in Yamanashi

Would you like to put on a straw hat, enjoy the sun and put yourself in a farmer’s shoes to collect some delicious fruits? You are in the right place!

Misaka Farm Grape House and its delicious peaches for picking in Japan

Yamanashi Prefecture is famous for the variety and quality of its fruits. Located in a topographic basin, the region has a special sunny climate. Did you know that Kofu has one of the longest daily sunshine hours in Japan? This is very conducive to the local production of wine and orchards. Blueberries, strawberries, peaches, cherries, plums, pears, grapes, and more, there is so much choice! One of our writers, Todd, even discovered the peach blossoms in Yamanashi prefecture.

We decided to get some peaches during our visit and participate in picking them to learn more about the local agriculture. We headed to Misaka Farm Grape House in Fuefuki town (known as the “peach city” of the region). Accessible in only 35 minutes by direct bus from Kofu station to Natsume stop, Misaka Farm Grape House is primarily specialized in grape production but is also widely known for its peach picking open to the public. There is no need to book in advance (except for groups of more than 10 people), and the staff can even accommodate you on rainy days.

Misaka Farm Grape House, a great occasion for fruits picking

First, the staff will ask you to choose a course, from 900 to 3500 yens per adult. The most common one is the 1300 yen fee, which allows you to pick two peaches and take them home. This fee also gives you access to the all-you-can-eat peach buffet available on-site , where you can enjoy peaches as much as you want. The higher rates also include a meal, with some souvenirs to take home.

Misaka Farm Grape House and its lovely peaches

After choosing your course, the staff will explain how to choose and pick your peaches. They ripen on the tree and fill up with sugar when in contact with the sun, so it is better to pick on high branches using the ladders and steps provided on the site. It is also preferable to pick peaches that are well-scented, round, and symmetrical, with reddish skin. However, it is important to avoid touching several peaches to gauge their “quality,” at the risk of damaging them over time. So the picking is done according to your eyes and the peaches’ smell.

Peach picking, a great activity to share with friends

The fruits are of such high quality that you can even eat the skin! The fruit in close contact with the skin is the sweetest, which you can enjoy after the peach is washed with the appropriate tubs and cut up as it is. This experience is enjoyable and allows you to spend a good time outdoors and enjoy nature while feasting on delicious fresh fruit. We recommend you avoid coming around noon, when it’s jam-packed, and come earlier in the morning if you want to take your time picking the best peaches.

The Shingen-ko Festival: The Largest Samurai Parade in the World

Every year in Kofu, it is actually possible to return to the past and assist in one of the biggest samurai battles that happened a few hundred years ago.

The biggest samurai festival in the world!

Every year in early April, an event of a colossal scale is held in Kofu city. The Shingen-ko Festival , officially recognized in the Guinness World Records as the largest samurai parade in the world, honors the previously mentioned Takeda Shigen. Kofu is one of the few cities in Japan to celebrate such an event in honor of its former lord. This shows the respect that the locals still have for him today! Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the festival was canceled in 2020, but it successfully happened in April 2021 for its 500th-anniversary celebration of Takeda Shigen.

Shingen-ko festival is the world's largest samurai festival in Japan

More than 1000 participants dressed in samurai costumes embodying the Takeda clan who parade in the city to pay tribute to their former lord for this special occasion. The parade starts from Kofu station and goes through the clan’s old estate before arriving at Maizuru Castle Park.

Even the cutest dogs can join the Shingen-ko festival in Japan

The event normally lasts three days and consists of several parts, including a reenactment of the battle of Kawanakajima at the Takeda Shrine. The scene is amusing because it is extremely theatrical. For many Japanese, it’s not a game, and it is a significant act to honor the memory of their former ruler.

Show of a battle with Takeda Shingen

Each year, the festival attracts more than 100,000 Japanese and international visitors and is a real pride for Kofu city. Foreigners are welcome to participate in the parade if they apply in advance and pay a registration fee. Would you like to be a samurai during a festival?

Best Local Food to Eat in Kofu

Would you like to try Kofu’s local cuisine? If you would like to try something a bit different, this is the right place to be!

traditional Japanese food a tasty place to share in Kofu

If you are not a fruit person, you should know that Kofu’s local specialty is actually hôtô (ほうとう), a dish of thick noodles in miso (fermented soybean paste) broth accompanied by seasonal vegetables. The broth also has several variations, with or without meat.

traditional Japanese food and hot pot

The texture of the noodles is very similar to udon but flatter. As for the broth, it is quite salty, and the texture is delightful. It’s enough to fill you up after a hike in the Shosenkyo valley! This dish is an ideal way to warm you up and is especially nice to share with friends. It is even said that hôtô was the dish eaten by Takeda Shingen and his soldiers before a battle. This dish is not very expensive (about 1000 yens) and is worth it.

traditional Japanese restaurant in Japan with statue of Godzilla

Another interesting local dish to try is torimotsuni (鳥もつ煮), chicken giblets fried in soy sauce, which won the B-1 Grand Prix (an award for the best local dishes in Japan) a few years ago. The texture is unique and goes very well with soy sauce. I recommend going to Kiri (きり), in the north area of Kofu station, which is a very good place to sample torimotsuni with soba noodles.

If you are curious, give it a try!

Best Places to Stay in Kofu

I would like to recommend Shiro no Hotel (城のホテル). This brand new hotel has a convenient location between the train station and Kofu Castle. Prices are relatively affordable, and even if the hotel itself is a bit classic, it offers a very nice view from the top floor, overlooking the whole city. A great spot to see the sumptuous Mount Fuji! There is also an onsen where you can take a dip, ideal for relaxing after a day of sightseeing.

Fuji view from Shiro no Hotel in Kofu

If you want something a bit more authentic, there are many ryokans in Yumura Onsenkyo spa area . This thermal district was often visited by the writer Dazai Osamu , and it is said that it is here that Takeda Shingen came to treat his wounds. The area is composed of about ten onsens and you can buy a pass which grants you access to try different onsen of the area. There are several pass options to consider depending on your budget.

A historic city ringed by mountains, renowned for its abundant orchards and wineries

A natural basin close to Mt Fuji and easily accessible from Tokyo, the Kofu area is blessed with orchards and vineyards. Its Yamanashi peaches and cherries are famous throughout Japan. The city has castle ruins for exploring and hot springs for relaxing.

  • The Lord Shingen Festival in spring: the largest parade of samurai warriors in Japan
  • Hiking through Shosenkyo Valley, which is considered one of the most beautiful valleys in Japan
  • Visiting one of the many local wineries
  • Picking peaches in the summer

How to Get There

Kofu is located in Central Yamanashi. There is easy rail access from Shinjuku Station to Kofu Station.

Take an express train from Shinjuku Station to Kofu Station on the JR Chuo Line. The journey takes about 90 minutes. Highway buses from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal reach Kofu in just over two hours.

Spectacular samurai

Relax in a bath with a view.

When it comes to hot springs, Kofu offers an abundance of pleasant options. Yumura Onsen to the west and Isawa Onsen to the east offer many different bathing experiences. Isawa Onsen Kagetsu is one of the most luxurious traditional inns in the area, with around 8,000 carp in the ornamental ponds of its extensive traditional gardens.

Mitama no Yu in the mountains to the south of Kofu is famous for its outdoor baths and night views.

Fruits Onsen Pukupuku to the east offers lovely night views from its fruit and flower-infused baths.

Discover the local vintages

There are many wineries open to the public around the Kofu Basin area, where wine has been produced for around 150 years. The first grapes arrived in the area via the Silk Road in the sixth century. Nowadays the Koshu grape variety is the most common, which is said to pair well with Japanese cuisine.

Eat more fruit

The Kofu Basin is renowned for its year-round fruit production, including peaches, grapes, persimmons, cherries, plums, pears, apples, kiwi fruits and strawberries. Many farms provide the chance to pick and eat your own fruit. To get a view of the abundant blossoms, the orchards around Kofu burst into color every spring. The view of a snow-capped Mt. Fuji framed by peach blossoms at one of Misaka Town's peach orchards is truly unforgettable.

Kōfu Travel Guide: Best Time to Go & Attractions

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases

In the central north of the prefecture of Yamanashi, Japan; at the heart of Honshu, lies the ancient city of Kōfu.

Steeped in history, initial records show that it was established around 100 BCE. At approximately three hundred meters above Sea level, it is enveloped by mountainous terrain.

Kofu travelers guide

Such basins tend to create their own subtropical climates, being shielded from the shoreline, making Kōfu one of the warmest places to visit in Summer and a much sought after holiday destination.

What to Expect? We will provide you with a detailed travel guide to this historic city, and the surrounding area, looking at travel, tourist attractions, local events, cuisine, and entertainment in order to provide you with an inclusive guide to Kōfu, from which you can begin to plan your perfect trip.

Table of Contents

What is Kōfu known for?

Kōfu has its roots in feudal Japan, rendering it one of the oldest across the whole archipelago.

The Land of the Rising Sun’s most famous mountain can be seen in what are described as breath-taking panoramic views.

The majestic Mount Fuji stands to the south and can be seen from Shosenkyo Gorge, a canyon by River Arakawa.

What is Kōfu known for?

Kōfu’s unique mountainous enclosure surrounds the capital of Yamanashi with beautiful countryside areas, incredible for hiking and outdoor adventures.

As with every city in Japan, Kōfu also hosts its own festivals and has an array of historical buildings like ancient castles.

Being a capital, it is and can be very busy, but in comparison to other cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, it is reportedly much quieter and calmer in its general atmosphere. It is, additionally, the most famous place for winemaking in the country.

What’s the best time to visit Kōfu?

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, the best time to visit Japan for good weather and much sunshine and heat, is between April and June.

This period coincides with the months which have the least rain.

The hottest and most popular months include, unsurprisingly, July, August, and September, although there is quite a lot of humid rainy weather throughout the latter.

As for Tourism – The quieter months are both January and February, should you prefer a less occupied destination. If you don’t mind it busy, then festival season is in Springtime and Kōfu hosts Japan’s largest Samurai festival: Shingen-ko.

Mitake Shōsenkyō (Shosenkyo Gorge)

Understandably unmissable and the most pertinent sight to see in the north of Kōfu, lies Shosenkyo Gorge: a large canyon and one of just 3 across all of Japan.

Residing within the grounds of Chichibu Tama Kai National Park, this stunningly scenic place contains rocks which seem sculpted in the shape of animals, boasts a sixty-foot waterfall (Sengataki), and brilliant views of a distant Mt. Fuji that you can enjoy from a specific vantage point, accessible only via a ropeway.

Mitake Shōsenkyō Japan

There is a small village consisting of places to eat, grab a drink, and a gift or two before paying a visit to the Shadow Art Museum located in the south end.

Easy to access by public transport, buses run regularly from Kōfu’s bus station to Shosenkyo-guchi and then another bus takes you to Shosenkyo Taki Ue.

The second bus does not run in Winter, but taxi services are available throughout this time.

Nishizawa Keikoku

Also situated within Chichibu Tama Kai National Park, is the enchanting valley of Nishizawa Keikoku.

Home to a 5-level waterfall, with a number of smaller ones leading up to it, there is a stream to follow along the mountain path.

Nishizawa Keikoku Japan

It does take a good hour and a half to hike to, and the path can be a little steep and difficult to manage, but it is a more accessible trail upon your return.

Logically at its most picturesque in both Spring and Autumn, it is one of the must-see destinations in Yamanashi prefecture.

Aligning with blossoming cherry trees , the Shingen-ko Matsuri is the most colossal gathering of both Samurai and Samurai enthusiasts in the entire world.

A festival with three days of historic re-enactments of cultural traditions, Shingen-ko takes place on one of the two first weekends of April.

Shingen-ko Matsuri Kofu

It celebrates Takeda Shingen (1521-1573).

A prominent figure in Japan’s history, Shingen was a daimyō: a victorious feudal warlord and ruler held in high esteem.

Running for over fifty years, in excess of 1500 Kōfu locals don actual Samurai armour and proudly come together in the iconic Maizuru Castle’s surrounding parklands.

Making a circular journey, via the streets of the city, they are led by someone dressed as Shingen in a march watched by thousands of locals and tourists each year.

With martial arts demonstrations, Kendo competitions, mini-Samurai youth parades for the kids, drum and other musical performances, and so much more, it is definitely something worth marrying up with the time that you visit.

Maizuri Castle

Named for its ancient stronghold, the park is literally a few minutes’ walk from Kōfu Station’s southern exit.

Once reduced to a mere pile of rocks, the castle suffered a catastrophic fire in the 18 th century and was demolished by the late 1870s.

Maizuri castle in Japan

In its early days, it was second only to Edo Castle and stood as one of the strongest and most strategically placed buildings in Japan.

Parts have been reconstructed using modern materials, but with the guidance of original and very ancient plans.

Arguably a very interesting place to visit, without the surrounding scenic parklands to explore.

Kanazakura Shrine

Being such an historical city, it is no surprise that local Shinto shrines date back thousands of years.

Kanazakura was reportedly established two millennia ago and is one of the most ancient in the prefecture of Yanamashi.

Kanazakura Shrine Kofu

An enchanting place to visit, even the steps leading up to the shrine are lined with ancient trees which are believed to be close to a thousand years old.

In the sanctuary’s grounds, stands the cherry tree for which the shrine is named.

Kanazakura tree is a sacred cherry tree, blossoming in a majestic golden shade.

The tree itself is enough to attract visitors, but there are also some fantastic dragon sculptures: notably gripping locally famous crystal balls with each of their tails.

Meotogi Shrine: Mount. Kinpu

Dedicated to the celebration of Fertility, Meotogi Shrine is located on the slopes of Mount. Kinpu and within the vicinity of Shosenkyo Gorge.

Another ancient tree stands within the grounds, but this one is a one-thousand-year-old, towering chestnut tree; the immediate grounds of which can be accessed for a small cost.

Mount. Kinpu Japan

The tree itself is said to grant the benefits of prosperous marriage, family safety and the blessing of safe birthing.

Just a 45-minute bus journey from Kōfu Station, this shrine is coupled with the awe-inspiring beauty of the mountainous terrain.

Popular for hiking and close to Shosenkyo Gorge Ropeway, it is a quick visit which can be added to any day’s itinerary.

Mount. Kinpu

Sporting a 7-hour return hiking trail, Mt. Kinpu stands at a height of 2599 meters and is the second highest peak in the area.

Held as sacred, part of the grounds has been built upon and much of it preserved.

With patches of flowers of varying breeds and colors, humongous rocks, and cliff faces, camping grounds, and stunning views of the surrounding area, and Mt. Fuji, it is categorised in the top 100 peaks of Japan.

Neighbouring Mount. Mizugaki, as well, it truly provides some uniquely astonishing views.

Geijutsunomori Park

With a stunning backdrop of the distant Mount. Fuji, the park is home to culture and arts museums stood within flower-filled gardens, spotted with a number of sculptures.

Geijutsunomori park Kofu

On the western side, lies Yamanashi’s Prefectural Museum of Art or the Museum of Millet after a 19 th century French painter with the same name.

Jean Francois Millet’s works are on consistent display, along with modern Japanese artwork.

To the East – Lies the Museum of Literature, which exhibits details of the and works of prominent historical authors with connections to the local area. These include Ryunosuke Akatagawa and Osamu Dazai, to name just two of the many displayed.

Yamanashi Science Center and Museum

This is a perfect place for any Space enthusiast.

Boasting a huge, twenty-meter diameter projector screen on which an incredible show is displayed, take a galactic journey through the stars as part of you visit.

According to visitors, it can be difficult to find, but with a bus directly from Kōfu station it is recommended that you ask for current information there.

Exhibiting a number of scientific and technological gadgets to play with, it is reportedly worth the effort making the trip, should you have the time to do so.

Kai Choshizuka Tumulus

With a modern bird’s-eye view, these ancient burial mounds resemble the shape of a keyhole.

Now surrounded by road, it is the most prominent example in the East of Japan with an encompassing length of almost 170 meters.

Considered to be an equivalent to the ancient Egyptian pyramids, it is dated to the Kofun era (c. 250-552 CE).

The tomb beneath is some fifteen meters in height and excavations have uncovered treasures of Japan’s ancient past buried deep below the mound’s surface.

Any of these finds can be viewed in the Yamanashi Prefectural Archaeological Museum, one of many such museums to enjoy within the region.

Katsunuma Wineries

Katsanuma in the basin of Kōfu, is the heart of winemaking and foundation of the whole industry in Japan.

Katsunuma wineries Japan

It is no coincidence that the area is well-known for the cultivation of grapes; specifically, the Koshu grape which is believed to have been imported over a millennium ago.

The creation of wine was started sometime in the nineteenth century, on the back of skills acquired from across Europe.

Since then, a large number of wineries have been established in and around the region, making it a great destination for wine connoisseurs.

Thanks to a now thriving industry, you can learn all about Japanese wine, as you taste your way through history.

Hottarakashi Onsen

There is no shortage of onsen throughout the many islands of Japan.

Few, however, have what this particular site has to offer. In the northern area of Kōfu, there lies a public hot spring which is uniquely out in the open mountain air.

Hottarakashi onsen Kofu

There, surrounded by eye-watering panoramic scenes including Mt. Fuji, you can soak yourself in the naturally heated, mineral-filled waters and relax as the sky rolls by.

Open quite late and open as early as just an hour before Dawn, this place can provide a magical experience for its guests should you plan your visit in time for either sunset or sunrise.

Having two separate baths available, there are two distinct prices as there is one which provides more advantageous views. There are even a few sheltered seating areas and vending machines close by.

Daizenji Temple

An impressive and historic site, this temple has sections which find their roots in the Kamakura era (1192-1333).

It is also referred to as the “Grape Temple” or “Temple of Grapes”, due to the idea that cultivation of the wine-bearing fruit first began there way back in the eighth century.

Along with Buddhist Artifacts – It is also part of a large vineyard area, up on an elevated plane overlooking the Kōfu landscape. This can be accessed via a bus service from Enzan Station which runs directly to the temple grounds.

Final Thoughts

When staying in the city, Japanese public transport is both easy to access and reasonably priced.

Some bus services are less frequent than others, and bus routes and numbers have been known to change, so it is always best to check near to the time of your departure, that all your plans are still executable.

With a vast number of things to both see and do, in Kōfu and the Yamanashi prefecture as a whole, you will need at least a fortnight to cover it all, if indeed that is even enough!

However long you plan to stay for, you will be sure to fill your itinerary with a wealth of interesting and exciting excursions, immersing yourself in one of Japan’s most historically cultural cities.

Kofu Castle

kofu tourist attractions

Kofu Castle (b{, Kōfu-jō) is a ruined and partially reconstructed castle in central Kofu that has been made into a public park, named Maizurujo Park. It features reconstructions of a castle turret and multiple gates, as well as a Japanese garden . The surviving stone walls make it easy for visitors to appreciate the original layout of the castle, and the park affords nice views of the city and nearby mountains.

Interestingly, the original castle was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the late 16th century and not by the Takeda clan who ruled the area in preceding centuries when the construction of castles inside cities was not a common practice yet. Following the battle of Sekigahara in 1600, the castle fell into the hands of the Tokugawa clan, in which it remained for the rest of the Edo Period . After the Meiji Restoration the castle was abandoned and dismantled before being opened as a public park in 1904.

Of the castle park's various features, highlights include the Inari Yagura, a reconstructed turret which can be entered for free and contains a small exhibition room with a diorama of the castle's former appearance. Good views can be enjoyed from the turret's upper floor and the castle's elevated former honmaru (main citadel) in the center of the park. Finally, a Japanese garden compliments the park's tranquil atmosphere.

Kofu has very hot summers and cold winters. The large difference in seasonal temperatures is due to the region’s geographic location within a basin surrounded by mountains on either side. Despite the area’s elevation average temperatures remain relatively high thanks to these geographical surroundings. The city is easily accessible from Tokyo via a two-hour journey by the JR Chuo express train or expressway coach.

The city once ruled by the legendary warrior Shingen Takeda, a towering figure for domestic and international samurai fans

Shingen Takeda commanded the strongest cavalry unit in Japan’s civil war period. His forces were said to surpass the combined strength of two of the three unifiers of Japan, Nobunaga Oda and Ieyasu Tokugawa. Locals adored Shingen who was a considerate ruler of Kofu and admired his military and political strength. He was believed to be the only warrior capable of matching the power of the feudal lord Nobunaga Oda. Shingen passed away during his fight to rule the unified nation, leaving this ambition to his son Katsuyori.

From iconic islands to major cities to the lesser-known, wild region of Epiros, our list of essential Greek destinations has a bit of everything © Georgios Tsichlis / Shutterstock

As its mythical Sirens were reputed to do, Greece has long lured travelers to its scintillating shores.

Across an expansive island archipelago, traditional whitewashed villages, azure seas and waterfront tavernas enchant visitors. Greece’s mountainous mainland, rich in UNESCO World Heritage–listed ancient sites, treasure-filled museums and spirited cities, is no less fascinating. As you contemplate your dream Greece itinerary, consider these 10 favorite places to add to it.

The Caryatids of the Parthenon at sunset, the Acropolis, Athens, Greece

Wherever you walk in Greece’s storied capital, the ancients have walked before – whether you see the evidence or not. From the Acropolis  (whose jewel in the crown is the fifth-century BCE Parthenon ) to the underground metro (where some stations feature archaic finds), Athens  is teeming with historical sites , monuments and museums. A combo card affords entry to the Acropolis and six more sites; the Acropolis Museum is also a must-see.

Easy to tackle on foot, Athens is also one of Europe’s liveliest metropolises – and strolls through neighborhoods like old-town Plaka , flea market–famous Monastiraki and hip Pangrati are highlights. By night, catch a live band in gritty Gazi , catch a movie at an outdoor cinema in Thission or go bar-hopping off the main commercial street Ermou.

Local tip: Book tickets online for a reinvented Greek tragedy or dance troupe performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus amphitheater as part of the  Epidaurus Festival , which takes place each summer.

Stunning photograph of a young woman diving in the deep and crystalline waters of the Cyclades islands, Milos,

A collection of over 70 beaches, sea caves hidden beneath limestone cliffs and technicolor traditional boat houses are just some of the reasons why mineral-rich Milos has won the hearts of many travelers. Evidence of its volcanic origins can be seen in the almost lunar landscape of Sarakiniko , where the more daring dive into a jade-colored Aegean. Arrive early at Gerondas beach to nab the generous shade of caves and enjoy floating silently in still waters.

Planning tip: Save a couple of days to spend on Kimolos, a small island northeast of Milos reachable by ferry. One of its most impressive beaches is Prassa, where coarse, blindingly white sand shows off shallow, aquamarine waters to full effect.

The medieval old town of Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece

Rhodes has long been the Dodecanese ’s biggest draw thanks to its atmospheric UNESCO World Heritage–listed medieval old town . Transformed in the Middle Ages by the Knights of the Order of St John into a formidable fortified city, it fell to the Ottomans, who erected mosques, baths and houses, many of which have been restored. Youngsters might envision armored men on horseback thundering down the cobblestoned Street of the Knights .

Make sure you visit the Palace of the Grand Master , which features stunning Roman and Early Christian floor mosaics, and the Church of Our Lady of the Castle.

Planning tip: Book a state-licensed tour guide to show you around the old town for a full picture of its long and fascinating history.

A couple walks among the iconic white buildings of Oia, Santorini, Cyclades, Greece

4. Santorini

Whether you’re coupled up or not, it’s hard not to fall for Santorini ’s charms. Whitewashed and pastel-hued, cube-shaped homes cling to steep cliffsides above a cobalt Aegean and the island’s famed caldera, formed by volcanic eruptions over millennia.

Weave your way through the narrow alleyways of the postcard-perfect village of Oia amid blue-domed churches. Bathe in thermal springs warmed by an active volcano, splay out on black-sand beaches and don’t miss the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri , which features an advanced drainage system.

Planning tip: Book a private tour of Santorini ’s smaller wine estates, whose new generation of vintners is breathing new life into traditional wines like mezzo and Nychteri.

Path to the Hermits Cave, near Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, Monodendri, Vikos Gorge, Greece

In Greece’s west lies Epiros , a remote region of soaring mountain peaks, fast-flowing rivers and hidden rock canyons. Hike to the alpine heights of Mt Tymfi’s Dragon Lake, which freezes over in winter, or traverse the thick forests, inclines and descents of spectacular Vikos Gorge . Whitewater rafting thrills and spills await in the Voidomatis or Arachthos rivers, while canyoning enthusiasts can choose from routes of varying difficulty.

View Of a windmill at the top of the whitewashed Hora Village in Serifos, Cyclades, Greece

6. Kythnos and Serifos

If peaceful sandy shores, unassuming waterfront tavernas and sleepy villages are more your style, the low-key West Cyclades isles of Kythnos and Serifos are worth a stop. Kythnos has deep, sheltered bays and tamarisk-dotted silver-sand beaches, among them Lefkes and Naousa.

Wallet-friendly tavernas line the laid-back fishing settlements of Loutro and Meriha, while wind-whipped Serifos , a two-hour ferry ride from Piraeus , features sweeping sandy beaches, sheltered bays, ghostly mining relics and a jewel-like hilltop capital whose neoclassical town hall stands sentinel over the buzzy main square.

Inside Kapani, one of the largest and most popular markets of Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece

7. Thessaloniki

At the crossroads of East and West, where the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans have held sway over the centuries, Thessaloniki tempts serious foodies. Bougatsa , a phyllo pastry pie usually filled with semolina custard, spinach or mince meat, makes for a hearty breakfast. Pick up olives and spices at the olfactory-awakening open-air markets and Pontic cheeses from indoor food hub Modiano , which dates back to 1922. In the former oil merchant district of Ladadika, mezedopolia serve dishes revealing strong Anatolian and Middle Eastern influences, customarily with the fiery clear spirit tsipouro .

Planning tip: Thessaloniki is also renowned for its fish and seafood, served with fervor and pride whether it’s a backstreet taverna or an upscale restaurant. Bookings are recommended for the latter.

Amazing beach of Votsi in Alonnisos island, Greece

Tranquil, turquoise seas, fir-studded hillsides and a regal capital make Corfu one of the most beautiful parts of the country to go sailing. The Ionian isle is the ideal starting point for novices who can take a sailing course and gain certification.

Afterward, join a flotilla for a leisurely cruise around Corfu, dropping anchor at Kalami Bay (of The Durrells fame) and lush Paleokastritsa. In Corfu Town , admire Venetian fortresses, the French-designed Liston Arcade and The Palace of St Michael and St George , built during the island’s British administration.

Planning tip: Few venture to Erikousa island, northwest of Corfu, which is blessed with pristine beaches and shallow cerulean seas.

Venetian harbour of the Pittoresk Cretan town with colorful old houses and loads of people

Greece’s largest island, Crete  abounds in historical sites, well-preserved monuments and modern museums. A wander through the Minoan-era palaces of Knossos , Malia , Phaestos and Kato Zakros  won’t disappoint any fan of classical culture.

Stroll along the Venetian Harbour in Hania , lined with Ottoman monuments such as the Kioutsouk Hasan Mosque . Trek up to Byzantine and Venetian fortresses such as the Fortezza in Rethymno and Kastelli in Hania. In the east, the 16th-century Venetian fortress on Spinalonga islet reveals a harrowing, more recent past as a leper colony.

Among noteworthy museums are the Heraklion Archaeological Museum , Chania’s Maritime Museum of Crete , and the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna in Rethymno.

Homosexual couple watching the sunset at Mykonos

10. Mykonos

In the 1960s and 70s, Mykonos hosted roving hippies, celebrities and moneyed jet-setters who flirted and danced till the sun came up. While new five-star hotels and swanky brand-name restaurants may have altered the landscape and driven up prices, the fabled Cycladic isle still reigns supreme when it comes to summer nightlife in the Mediterranean.

Revelers can choose from the thumping bars lining Little Venice in Hora , as well as beach bars, cabaret restaurants and iconic clubs like seaside Cavo Paradiso , where illustrious music DJs fire up the crowd.

Planning tip: August is Mykonos’ busiest month. It’s also when you can witness the hottest DJs and surprise appearances by music artists, including prominent hip-hop names.
