Canvas Collective Africa is fortunate to be situated in the beautiful Overberg Region. And if you’re travelling from Cape Town to stay with us or even simply visiting the charming Hermanus or Hemel-en-Aarde areas for the day – there are plenty of wonderful places to discover along the way.

In this post, we look at some of the best stops to enjoy when road tripping from Cape Town to Hermanus:

Choose Your Route

When travelling to Hermanus – South Africa’s famous whale capital and one of the core coastal towns in the Overberg Region – you have a few route options.

The main route is travelling via the N2 – or N2 and R43.

Otherwise, travellers can alternatively head to Stellenbosch (taking the N1 from Cape Town) and make their way to Hermanus from there. This route is a slightly more scenic option but it is also fractionally longer.

Either way, Hermanus is roughly a two-hour drive from Cape Town, give or take a few minutes’ drive time.

Cape Town > Stellenbosch > Hermanus

If you decide to enjoy road tripping from Cape Town to Hermanus via Stellenbosch, you’ll pass many excellent stops along the way.

What’s more, the Stellenbosch route provides you with the chance to really acquaint yourself with the Cape Winelands, as you’ll first travel through Stellenbosch Winelands, then the Helderberg Wine Route, Elgin Valley, Bot Rivier and more before you reach Hermanus (also home to some excellent wine estates).

So, if you aren’t pressed for time, it’s certainly a winning road trip experience.

Some of the stops to savour along the way (once you head out of Stellenbosch proper, which, of course, overflows with an abundance of eateries, coffee shops and nearby wine farms) include wine farms like Blaauwklippen, Cavalli and Avontuur, as well as local eateries and attractions like Thirsty Scarecrow and the popular Root44 Market.

Once you reach Somerset West side, your route essentially lines up with the N2 route so you’ll find many of the same attractions – so we’ll explore these in more detail below.

Cape Town to Hermanus (via N2 or N2 and R43)

(Both routes (N2 or N2 and R43) are quite similar in nature (and in travel time) – so we’re going to focus on the main highlights for both.)

Once you have headed out of Cape Town along the N2, you’ll come to Somerset West and after it, Strand.

In this lovely Helderberg Region, there are some lovely wine farms, shopping malls and of course, beautiful beaches to enjoy a little off the beaten track.

After the Helderberg, you climb the impressive, twisty Sir Lowry’s Pass. It famously has a great viewpoint at the top of the pass so you can stop to soak up the views, snap photos or even grab a bite to eat (just remember to pack in some padkos !).

Thereafter, you enter Elgin and Grabouw. These country towns offer everything from wine farms to roadside farm stalls and the pumping Elgin Railway Market.

If you pass through Elgin on a weekend, don’t miss experiencing the full Elgin Railway Market. This chic, steampunk market offers everything from incredible food- and drink-stalls to arts and crafts wares, a kiddies’ outdoor play area, a cute book bus, homeware and vintage clothing.

But one of the market’s biggest drawcards is the Ceres Railway Company steam train that famously stops here each weekend. It’s quite a sight watching this grand old dame pull into the humble Elgin train station.

Other unmissable foodie spots in and around Elgin and Grabouw include either Peregrine Farm Stall or Houw Hoek Farm Stall.

Both farm stalls are known and loved for their wholesome food options and they make great pit-stops for those road tripping from Cape Town to Hermanus in need of a quick stop.

After Elgin Valley, you eventually reach another glorious farming region and small town called Botrivier. This Overberg town may be small but it is mighty and oh-so-beautiful.

Best of all, there are some lovely eateries and wine farms to enjoy in and around the Botrivier Wine Route. Another roadside gem is Ou Meul Bakery and Farmstall; perfect for topping up your “tanks” with some tasty treats or delicious coffee!

After Botrivier, you’ll reach the Hermanus and Hemel-en-Aarde regions. Here, wine farms (like Rivendell Wines and Benguela Cove to name only a few), local eateries, beaches, shops and more provide ample opportunity to stretch your legs or to experience the beautiful Overberg Region more fully.

Plus, if you visit during the annual whale season (which generally runs from June to December), you may even spot some whales!

Oh and if you drive through on a Saturday, don’t forget to check out the much-loved Hermanus Country Market; it runs from 9am – 2pm.

So, there you have it, these are some fun stops to enjoy when you road trip from the Mother City to Hermanus!

Hermanus, South Africa: The Complete Guide

travel from cape town to hermanus

On the south coast of South Africa ’s Western Cape province lies Hermanus, a tourist hotspot that’s part luxury holiday resort, part old-fashioned fishermen’s village. The town overlooks Walker Bay, where southern right whales congregate every year between June and December. Consequently, Hermanus has earned a reputation as the best land-based whale-watching destination in Africa ; if not the world. Whales aren’t the only reason to visit, however. Hermanus is also known for its gourmet restaurants, fertile winelands, and impressive selection of boutique shops and galleries. All of its many charms combine to make it one of the highlights on the road between Cape Town and the start of the Garden Route in Mossel Bay.

Whale Watching in Hermanus

The number one reason to visit Hermanus is to catch a glimpse of the southern right whales that populate Walker Bay from June to early December. The whales migrate annually to South Africa’s Cape Whale Coast from their feeding grounds in Antarctica , and spend their time here mating, calving, and raising their young. The Hermanus Cliff Path and Gearing’s Point both provide elevated vantage points where spectators watch as whales play just a few hundred feet from shore. The town even has its own Whale Crier , who alerts locals and tourists whenever a whale is spotted by blowing into a kelp horn.

Land-based whale watching is both rewarding and free, but if you want to get even closer to the whales it’s worth paying for a boat tour with a licensed company like Southern Right Charters . As well as the southern right whales, you’ll also have the opportunity to look for other South African marine life including humpback and Bryde’s whales, two species of dolphin, Cape fur seals, and the endangered African penguin. Aerial whale watching is another unforgettable option.

Every September, the Hermanus Whale Festival celebrates the town’s most famous residents with three days of environmental talks, film presentations, beach clean-ups, street parades, food stalls, and performers. There are also plenty of fun activities for kids, including the Pirates & Mermaids Treasure Hunt. If your visit doesn’t coincide with the festival, you can learn more about the whales and the whaling industry that once operated out of nearby Betty’s Bay either at the Old Harbour Museum or the Whale House Museum . The latter includes a full-size southern right whale skeleton.

Other Things to Do in Hermanus

Hermanus also has more than its fair share of beautiful beaches . The largest and most visited is Grotto Beach, which stretches for over 11 miles. Part of the beach has earned Blue Flag status for its superior cleanliness and facilities, which include easy parking, lifeguards, and braai (barbecue) facilities around the lagoon mouth. The lagoon is an ideal spot for families, providing a safe space for children to swim and play. Other top options include Onrus Beach and Voelklip Beach, both of which are great for surfers . In December, Onrus Beach hosts the annual Onrus Classic Surfing and Bodyboarding Competition.

There are many other ways to make the most of Hermanus’ awe-inspiring location in between mountains and sea. The Hermanus Cliff Path is a 7.5-mile coastal trail that runs from New Harbour to Grotto Beach, offering astonishing views of Walker Bay and its whales along the way. Hikers will also love Fernkloof Nature Reserve , which has 37 miles of hiking trails. As part of the Cape Floristic Region, the reserve is a botanist’s paradise with more than 1,250 species of plant including many different types of endemic fynbos. Keep an eye out for wildlife ranging from grey rhebok and Cape grysbok antelope to baboons and rock hyraxes.

Walker Bay Nature Reserve offers a plethora of different outdoor activities like whale watching, birding, hiking, 4x4 trails, and angling. If you want to fish, you will need a permit; these can be purchased from any South African post office. Other options for watersports lovers include canoeing and kayaking tours on Klein River Lagoon, or sea kayaking on Walker Bay. For golf enthusiasts, Hermanus Golf Course boasts 27 holes interspersed with panoramic coastal and mountain vistas.

Where to Eat

If you love good food, you’ll love Hermanus. The town is full of gourmet restaurants, most of which focus on farm-to-table dining that showcases South Africa’s bountiful produce. Often, dishes are paired with local wines from the nearby Hemel en Aarde valley, which fittingly translates to "Heaven and Earth." For breakfast, try the specialty sweet and savory pancakes at Betty Blue Bistro , a light-filled, minimalist space on Main Road. For lunch and dinner, The Wine Glass and Pear Tree are tried-and-true favorites. The former serves artisanal small plates and close to 100 local wines sold by the glass. The latter is known for its seafood dishes, served al fresco.

Both restaurants are very close to Gearing’s Point, so if the Whale Crier’s horn sounds, you can go and watch whales in between courses. If you’re in Hermanus over the weekend, head to the Hermanus Country Market (held every Saturday morning) to stock up on organic, gourmet treats and local wines ahead of a picnic on the Cliff Path.

Where to Stay

Accommodation options in Hermanus are dominated by boutique hotels and luxury guesthouses. Of them all, One Marine Drive Boutique Hotel is a fan-favorite. It has five exquisitely decorated guest rooms (all with sea-facing private balconies), a roaring fireplace in the living room and a full homemade breakfast every morning. 5-star Birkenhead House is another excellent choice. It perches atop the cliffs and boasts jaw-dropping views from all 11 rooms, the infinity pool and the fine-dining restaurant. This hotel offers spa treatments and all-inclusive rates.

For a more affordable place to rest your head, consider Hermanus Backpackers . This budget pick enjoys an exceptional location in the town center, just 15 minutes’ walk from Gearing’s Point. You can choose from a range of dormitories and private rooms, some with en-suite bathrooms; while other amenities include a welcoming living room, a communal kitchen, and a garden with a swimming pool.

Weather and When to Go

Hermanus is a year-round destination and no matter when you travel, there’s always something to see and do. If you want to see whales, you’ll need to time your visit to coincide with the June to December whale season. Activity typically peaks in August and September. Weather-wise, Hermanus has a mild Mediterranean climate and follows the same weather patterns as the rest of the Western Cape. Winter (June to August) is the coldest and wettest time of year, with an average of six rainy days per month and temperatures that range from 50 to 66 degrees F (10 to 19 degrees C). Summer (November to January) is the hottest and driest time of year, with just two days of rain per month and temperatures that range from 59 to 77 degrees F (15 to 25 degrees C).

Therefore, even though winter is the best time for spotting whales, summer brings plenty of sunshine and is the best season for basking on the beach. For the best of both worlds, plan your trip for November. Note that accommodation and tours book up quickly during the Hermanus Whale Festival (in September) and during the December holidays.

Getting There

Hermanus is located approximately 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Cape Town. The quickest way to get there from the Mother City is on the N2 motorway, a journey of just over 1.5 hours. The more scenic route detours along the coastal R44 highway and takes just over 2 hours. If you’re traveling west from the Garden Route , Hermanus is 3.5 hours from Mossel Bay, 1 hour and 45 minutes from Cape Agulhas (the most southerly point in Africa), and 40 minutes from Gansbaai, the great white shark diving capital.

Most tourists travel to Hermanus using a rental car . However, if you don’t have your own wheels, there are other options. The Baz Bus is a hop-on/hop-off backpacker bus that stops in Hermanus en route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth (and vice versa). Local tour company Hotspots2c offers highly recommended, small-group itineraries, many of which include a visit to Hermanus.

For most travelers, the best time to visit Cape Town is between December and April, when it's warm and dry, which means you can mix outdoor activities like hiking Table Mountain with blissing out on beautiful beaches. That said, there are plenty of good reasons to visit the city around the year, as revealed in our guide to the best time to visit Cape Town.

Best time to visit Cape Town at a glance

When is the best time to visit cape town, december — march: best for beaches and buzz, spring and autumn: best for hiking and wine, june and july: best for budget breaks and culture, august—october: best for whale-watching.

  • Visit Cape Town from December to Apri l for optimal beach weather. Average temperatures of 18°C to 28°C (64°F to 82°F) are also ideal for outdoor activities like hiking Table Mountain.
  • April to May is shoulder season, offering smaller crowds and cooler, pleasant temperatures that average 20°C (68°F).
  • June to August is low season with cooler, wet weather averaging 18°C (64°F), and prices that'll please budget travelers.

For beach bums and anyone keen on enjoying the city's great outdoor life, the best time to visit Cape Town is December through to April.

This season provides just the right amount of warmth and sunny days with temperatures at around 23°C (73°F) — ideal for sunbathing at Clifton's or Llandudno beaches, or hiking Table Mountain.

For the most part, the April-May shoulder season heralds cooler temperatures that average 20°C (68°F) through the daylight hours. It's a great time to explore the Winelands, and enjoy easy strolls in Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden just as the landscape bursts into autumnal colors.

Meanwhile, June to August marks the low season, with cooler, wetter weather, and temperatures averaging 18°C (64°F). Being wet, it's a good time to visit if you want to explore indoor cultural attractions such as Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art.

It's also a good time to visit if you're travelling on a budget, or into photography — the surrounding countryside is lush and green at this time of year.

Warm and dry, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 27°C (59°F to 81°F), December to March is summer in Cape Town.

Given the gloriously warm weather and low rainfall, this is the best time to visit Cape Town to make the most of the beaches, including Clifton and Camps Bay.

It’s also perfect for visiting the vibrant V&A Waterfront, and enjoying outdoor activities such as hiking Table Mountain or picnicking in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.

Note that this is also peak tourist season, which means it’s the most expensive time to visit Cape Town, with high demand for accommodation. You can also expect top attractions to be crowded.

Cape Town’s autumn (March- May) and spring (September-November) shoulder seasons are the best time to visit Cape Town to enjoy the great outdoors, and soak up local wineries.

With low rainfall, and warm weather that’s much more comfortable than during the peak of summer, there’s no better time to get active around Cape Town.

For example, you could hike to Table Mountain’s Platteklip Gorge — a moderate-to-challenging route that takes 2-23 hours to ascend.

The most direct route to the top of Table Mountain, this is steep and strenuous but very rewarding, courtesy of it offering panoramic views of the city and the Atlantic Seaboard.

Or how about exploring Silvermine Nature Reserve? With tonnes of trails to choose from according to your fitness level, this is part of Table Mountain National Park.

Into active trips? Check out our cycling trip that kicks off in Cape Town.

With fewer crowds than December to February, the spring and autumn shoulder seasons are also top times to explore the Cape Winelands, with vineyards and wineries offering wine-tasting experiences.

Stellenbosch is a great place to start. One of the oldest and most prestigious wine regions in South Africa, it boasts 170+ wine estates that produce everything from rich reds to crisp whites.

Then there’s Franschhoek. Known as the food and wine capital of South Africa, this picturesque town offers opportunities to sample wine from over 50 vineyards, while also enjoying fine food in award-winning restaurants.

Can’t decide how to focus your trip? Our customisable Complete Cape Town itinerary includes wine, whales and other wildlife.

June and July are winter months in Cape Town, which means it’s cool and pretty rainy, with temperatures ranging from 7°C to 20°C (45°F to 68°F).

Given the likelihood of rain — though note it usually comes in short, intense showers that are quick to clear —these months are a great time for culture vultures to explore museums and galleries.

You won’t want to miss the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), District Six Museum, or the South African Jewish Museum.

This being low season, you can also expect to have more space in such attractions, and you’ll be able to bag yourself a bargain on flights and accommodation.

June and July are also good months to enjoy Cape Town’s food scene, or to head to the Winelands for cosy tasting sessions

These months are also the start of whale-watching season, though August, September and October see the biggest numbers of whales, as detailed below.

Before you head to South Africa , also be sure to read our guide on whether South Africa is safe , which contains everything you need to know about travel safety.

While whale-watching season runs from July to November, the highest number of sightings around these parts tend to happen in late-August through to October.

At this time, whales are more active near the surface, making sightings more frequent and dramatic.

Southern right whales are the most commonly sighted species, and come very close to the shore.

At this time of year humpback whales —   known for their spectacular breaching — are frequently seen as they migrate through the region to their breeding grounds further north.

As for where to see them, Hermanus is renowned as one of the best whale-watching locations in the world.

About a 90-minute drive from Cape Town, September sees the town hosts the annual Hermanus Whale Festival to celebrate the return of the whales.

Your best bet is to book a guided boat trip from Hermanus. Prefer to stay on land? Head to the coastal paths and cliffs around Hermanus and Walker Bay.

Cape Town cruise port

Region Africa - Indian Ocean Islands

Local Time 2024-06-10 20:12

Port Cape Town cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Cape Town, South Africa. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Cape Town is a port city in South Africa, which has one of the world’s most beautiful harbours. It is located at Table Bay, has total area approx 400 km2 (155 mi2) and population around 435,000 (metro over 1,74 million). The list of major cruise lines with seasonal homeporting in Cape Town includes MSC, NCL-Norwegian, Azamara, Crystal, Silversea, Hapag-Lloyd.

Cape Town is South Africa's oldest city, legislative capital, country's 2nd-most populous metro area (following Johannesburg / 9,6+ million) and is best-known for its scenic harbor and the landmarks Cape Point and Table Mountain. Cape Town is Afrika's 10th largest city and one of world's most multicultural cities. In 2014, it was named "World Design Capital" by Icsid (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design).

The city was first developed by VOC (United East India Company, aka Dutch East India Company / 1602-1799) as a supply station for Dutch trade vessels to India, East Africa, and the Far East. On April 6, 1652, here was established South Africa's first permanent European settlement as an outpost (at Castle of Good Hope), which soon became Cape Colony's economic hub. Until Witwatersrand Gold Rush (1886) that resulted in Johannesburg's development, Cape Town was the country's largest town.

Port's cruise ship schedule has vessels booked for docking the whole year-round. The cruise port is also homeport (serving turnarounds/roundtrips) but mainly attractive embarkation and disembarkation port of call for seasonal relocation (RepositionCruises.com) and Around the World voyages. Port Cape Town statistics show steady growth in cruise shipping volumes. In 2012, it handled 6050 passengers, in 2013 - 14754, in 2016 - 29269.

The local economy's main revenues from the cruise industry are crew and passenger ashore spending, cruise line-sponsored shore excursions/tours (staffing), cruise company spending (on vessel supplies and services), as well as in-port spending (ship repairs and maintenance). It was estimated that on relocation cruise itineraries stopping in South African ports, cruise tourists spend an average USD 100 pp on land-based activities, services and goods.

Cape Town City's water crisis began in 2015, resulting in severe water shortage in Western Cape but most notably affecting the city.

  • In response to the shortage, the region's agriculture reduced water consumption by 50%. This nationally contributed to job loss of 37,000 in the sector. Around 50,000 people were pushed below the poverty line due to job losses and food-price inflation.
  • Despite all water-saving measures, dam levels declined to critically low levels. The city planned its "Day Zero" on April 12, 2018, when most water supply will be shut off.
  • When "Day Zero" is declared (dam's water level reaches 13,5%), municipal water supplies will be switched off. The city's residents will rely on a total of 149 points to collect a daily water ration per person (25 liters pp). If this happens, Cape Town will become world's first-ever large city running out of water.

The decreased water usage and strong rains in June 2018 steadily increased dam levels (up to 70% in September 2018) and the city eased water restrictions. In May 2019, Cape Town's total dam storage was 45,9% or combined 411849 megalitres (out of max capacity 898221).

Port Cape Town's cargo and cruise shipping operations are managed by TNPA (Transnet National Ports Authority). This is Africa's largest port authority company that manages 7 large seaports in South Africa - Cape Town, Durban , Richards Bay ,  East London ,  Mossel Bay ,   Port Elizabeth , and Saldanha .

Cape Town cruise terminal

Cape Town cruise port is located approx 220 km (140 mi) away from Cape Agulhas, direction northwest. Due to its strategical place on the route between the Dutch East Indies and Europe, the port was among the most important in the mid-17th century.

Currently, Cape Town is one of the most interesting cruise ports of call in the world. The basins Victoria and Alfred are visited by smaller cruise ships. These used to be the port's main wharves located in the original harbour of Cape Town. Alfred Basin was the harbour's first section added, followed by the building of the Victoria Basin. Larger cruise ships berth at Duncan Dock. It has several multi-purpose terminals, also repair quay and a dry dock facility.

The driving distance from the cruise port to downtown is ~10 minutes. Africa's second-largest airport - Cape Town International Airport, is located 22 km (14 mi) away from the city center. Other transportation options from and to the cruise port are bus shuttles, metered taxis, car rental services.

The next photo shows the old cruise terminal at "E Berth" (Duncan docks).

(new) Cape Town Cruise Terminal (Waterfront)

In July 2015 was announced an agreement for building a new cruise ship terminal at Port Cape Town, built by TNPA (Transnet National Ports Authority) as the preferred bidder. The project's cost was around USD 14,5 million. The agreement included terminal facility maintenance, operation and transfer of ownership back to TNPA in 20 years after completion.

The plan for a new Waterfront passenger terminal was announced in 2012. The initial issue started when local cruise tourism started to decline after South Africa's Department of Home Affairs banned from docking at Waterfront vessels with LOA length over 200 m / 656 ft.

The Victoria and Alfred / ) V&A Waterfront investment will result in a new cruise ship terminal facility able to accommodate larger vessels. The new terminal facility will also create local jobs, will increase ship calls and strengthen the country's cruise industry as a whole. Until then, cruise ships are required to dock at Port Cape Town as first port of call based on a Directive from the Minister of Home Affairs (Immigration Act 13 of 2011).

South Africa's cruising season is October through April.

Cape Town Travel Guide: Where To Stay, Eat Drink And Safari In The South African City

C ape Town is a cultural melting pot, increasingly celebrated for its art, food and fashion, as well as being a natural wonder, home to stunning scenery - mostly associated with the ever-dominating Table Mountain that looks out over the city - incredible land and ocean wildlife, which offer the opportunity to get up close with safari options and beautiful beaches just a stone's throw from the metropolis.

Though it is a 12-hour flight from London, it has just a one-hour time difference meaning that it is far enough away to feel like you're exploring somewhere totally different and yet there is no jet lag to acclimatise to. This makes it an ideal long-haul location , especially if you're wanting to escape when the temperatures drop in the UK and start heating up in Cape Town (the hottest months of the year are January to March). Plus, there's no visa requirements for UK citizens.

All in all, it's very straightforward as far as far-away adventures go. Unlike other long haul trips where you might opt for multi-destination holidays to justify the lengthy travel time, there isn’t the need to do this in Cape Town. It has everything - food, beach, nature, adventure and wine - all within a short radius.

Sold yet? You're not the only one. It’s no surprise that in the aftermath of the pandemic, people have flocked to the African city, with January to June 2023 exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 104%, welcoming 1.4 million international visitors. Most visitors come from the UK, with an estimated 70,000 British tourists opting for Cape Town as their holiday destination in the first four months of 2023 alone.

Here's everything you need to know, from hotels to restaurants to safari in Cape Town:

Hotels in Cape Town

The Silo Hotel

Found in the trendy V&A waterfront area of the city, this former grain factory offers stunning 360° views of Table Mountain to across the water of Robben Island. An ideal city hotel, the rooms have everything you need and its delicious breakfast is first-class, setting you up perfectly for a day of sightseeing and exploring. The rooftop sky terrace is a must-visit for guests. In the winter, enjoy the view while cosying up with a blanket and glass of wine from the bar. In the summer, make use of the pool, which can also be found up there.

As well as boasting its own art collection - you can also have a private guided art tour by their in-house resident expert - the hotel is found on top of the Zeitz Museum Of Contemporary Art Africa, which is home to a stunning collection of art from across South Africa and the continent.

The One & Only

The Cape Town edition of the luxury chain has more of a resort feel (some rooms are accessible via a bridge over the canal where a resident otter lives), which is a great choice for travellers who like to add an element of R&R to their city escape. The rooms are minimalist, but with clear African influences on its design, such as printed curtains, beaded ornaments and natural wood decor.

Outside of the room, you can unwind in the spa, found on its own man-made island, where a pre or post-flight massage is definitely encouraged or visit the resort's wine studio for a private wine tasting session by their own expert sommelier sampling the best wine in the Cape Town region, accompanied by a delicious charcuterie board. For dining, the all-day food and drink site, Vista Bar, sits directly opposite Table Mountain for unparalleled views. The One & Only also boasts a Nobu restaurant, which until recently was the only posting of the famed Japanese eatery on the continent (Chef Nobu and Robert De Niro opened up their second African restaurant in Marrakech in spring 2023). The concierge can help arrange activities with excursions, including whale watching, hikes and even shark dives offered.

Restaurants in Cape Town

Cape Town has really put itself on the map for its dining options in recent years, with a huge variety of restaurants. From modern takes on South African cuisine to full gastronomic experiences, the city has something for everyone. As a pescatarian, there's a huge amount of non-meat options, too. Plus, Ubers are a super reliable, cheap and easy way to navigate the city and fit in as many eateries as possible.

New for 2023 is Salon , the sister restaurant of the world-renowned Pot Luck Club (and found just one floor below), which offers incredible multi-course tasting menus based on all the places across the world where chef Luke Dale-Roberts has worked. Salon's take on the Singapore Chilli, Malaysian Laksa and twist on the traditional South African Malva pudding to finish off our dinner are highlights.

Another must-visit restaurant for a full multi-course and wine-paired culinary experience is the exclusive Salsify at the Roundhouse (recently named Africa's best landmark restaurant by the World Culinary Awards), whose setting overlooks Camps Bay in one direction (which is worth a visit in itself. Head to the beach just before sunset for stunning views of the ocean in this quaint surfer setting) and Lion's Head in the other. Salsify offers a lengthy ten-course chef's menu (we loved the line fish), where for every course one of the kitchen's chefs will bring it to your table and talk you through the dish.

For a lunch or dinner option in one of the cooler parts of the city, try the new spot Club Kloof . The Italian-inspired menu specialises in small plates with Mediterranean influence. We recommend the Mac and Cheese Arancino and Mozarella-Stuffed Pizza Fritta paired with an Aperol Spritz, of course. The brightly-tiled interiors make for a dreamy dining setting, too.

Speaking of interiors, Upper Union is another eatery where the food is elevated by the stylised decor of the building. In the heart of Cape Town’s Kloof Street district, it is an interiors lover's dream thanks to the emerald, black and gold modern twist on the traditional Victorian heritage building. At Upper Union, you can opt for the chef's menu of a big main meal with sides (headed up by chef Amori Burger) or a sharing-style menu. Whichever you choose, pair it with a cocktail from the mixologist's menu of bespoke drinks.

Day trips from Cape Town

There is so much to see and visit in Cape Town. So much so that you probably won't get to do it all. But here are some of the essentials that you should try to tick off if possible.

You will see Table Mountain wherever you go and should definitely try and get up there to view the Mother City from the best view possible. There are cable cars which go to and from Table Mountain and we recommend downloading the app to double check the cable cars are running as they don't if there is poor visibility or difficult weather conditions. If you'd prefer to hike, there are a variety of routes to take, differing in length and ability.

A hugely important trip from Cape Town is to Robben Island, where a ticket includes the ferry over to the island where former president and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, along with countless other citizens who were held as political prisoners for their fight against the apartheid. The tour guides on Robben Island are former inmates, making the visit profoundly impactful as they present the squalid conditions where they were forced to sleep, eat and work, often with very limited outside visitation while being held under strict rules and regulations, including being forbidden from speaking to to other inmates. As well as seeing Mandela's cell, you are also shown the areas where he wrote (and hid around the prison) manuscripts for his memoir, Long Walk To Freedom.

Another day trip about an hour's drive away from the CBD (central business district) centre is the Cape of Good Hope, the most south-western point of the African continent. It's also where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean so be prepared for breathtaking scenery of lush green mountains and crashing waves on the pebbled beaches.

Have a pit stop at Kalk Bay en route to the Cape of Good Hope, for kitsch coffee shops and souvenir spots, as well as sampling the fish and chips on the waterfront before taking a stroll to where seals will be found happily sunbathing.

Another must-visit is Boulders Beach , home to the famous colony of African penguins. Adorable.

Vineyards near Cape Town

There's the option to spend day trips visiting some of the many vineyards in the nearby wine region (some are as close as 30 minutes away) or you can extend your stay with a night or two there. In which case, you will likely end up in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch.

We opted to spend a night at the majestic Lanzerac Estate, a five-star country hotel with traditional décor full of beautiful quirky china antiques. Surrounded by mountains with a grand tree-lined driveway, the estate is home to rows of lush vines. We recommend heading to the deli for a wine tasting session. Try a glass of the rosé pinotage, a cross between the Pinot Noir and Hermitage grape, which originated at Stellenbosch University.

For a gorgeous dining experience in Stellenbosch where, of course, the wine is just as good too (there are 130 bottles on offer), we recommend the appropriately named The Wine Glass restaurant.

Safari near Cape Town

Of course, safari is a must when heading to South Africa. While the more widely known Kruger National Park is located further north nearer Johannesburg and Pretoria, it's incorrect to assume there aren't beautiful safari options nearer Cape Town, too.

Gondwana game reserve is a four and a half hour drive away from Cape Town. It's an easy drive, essentially one straight long road once out of Cape Town (stop off at Tredici bakery in Swellendam en route).

Gondwana is home to the big five: lion, elephant, rhino, hippo and buffalo, as well as herds of zebra, impala, cheetah, giraffe, monkeys and more. Guests are usually taken out for a morning and late afternoon safari. Thanks to the incredibly knowledgeable and passionate safari guides, highlights range from seeing a baby rhino crossing the path with his mother, a herd of giraffes having their morning breakfast and a post-hunt pride of lions chomping on their prey.

Though it is centrally about the wildlife and ensuing unforgettable experiences you make, the experience of Gondwana is heightened by the luxury accommodation. There are a range of options for your stay, from Ulubisi House, the staffed three-bedroom private lodge with a private pool, to the Kwena Lodge suites with a shared pool, sky lights for stargazing, and a range of indoor and outdoor restaurants offering incredible food.

Well, what are you waiting for?

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

The 5 Best Hostels in Cape Town

A view overlooking the beautiful beach of Cape Town, South Africa with mountains in the distance

Cape Town has been a popular backpacker hub for years. It’s also fast becoming a favorite with digital nomads too, thanks to the city’s vibrant nightlife and rich, diverse culture.

There are plenty of budget-friendly hostels for backpackers and nomads here. Below you’ll find my list of the best hostels in Cape Town to help you have fun, meet other travelers, and have a good sleep while you spend time in what is honestly one of the greatest cities in the world.

But first, here are four things you need to remember before picking a hostel in Cape Town:

  • Location – Cape Town isn’t super spread out, and it’s quick and easy to get around to most of the main areas, but to guide your decision, you may want to consider things like safety and which attractions you’d prefer to be closest to. Pick a hostel that is near the sites you want to see and/or the nightlife you want to experience, so you won’t waste time (and money) in transit.
  • Price – Most of the hostels in Cape Town are fairly inexpensive, but there are some that are cheaper than others. If you’re willing and able to pay a bit more, you can get accommodation with perks like AC. However, the cheaper options still provide lots of value.
  • Amenities – All hostels offer free Wi-Fi and a few include free breakfast, but if you want more than that, do your research to find one that best meets your needs.
  • Staff – All the hostels listed here have amazing staff! They are super friendly and knowledgeable. Even if you don’t stay at one of the places listed below, look up reviews to ensure you end up somewhere where the staff is helpful and friendly. They can make or break a hostel!

Below is my list of the best hostels in Cape Town. If you don’t want to read the longer list, however, the following are the best in each category:

Want the specifics of each hostel? Here’s my breakdown of the best hostels in Cape Town and why I love them:

Price legend (per night)

  • $ = Under 250 ZAR
  • $$ = 250-400 ZAR
  • $$$ = Over 400 EUR

1. Villa Viva

A room inside the Villa Viva hostel in Cape Town, South Africa

I really liked that the dorm beds have thick mattresses (they also have curtains so you can get a decent sleep). Beds have outlets and lights too. The highlight for me, though, was the pressurized rain shower. It was excellent!

Villa Viva at a glance :

  • Hostel Whatsapp group makes it easy to meet people
  • Lively outdoor area with a pool and garden
  • Organizes lots of events and activities

Beds from 420 ZAR, private rooms from 950 ZAR.

Book here!

2. Ashanti Lodge Gardens

A pool outside of the Ashanti Lodge in sunny Cape Town, South Africa

While the dorm beds don’t have curtains, I did appreciate that the mattresses were thick and that there were plenty of plugs and USB ports in the room. The modern bathrooms have really nice high-pressure showers too (a big plus in my book!).

Ashanti Lodge Gardens at a glance :

  • Outdoor pool
  • Great showers
  • Café/bar on-site

Beds from 460 ZAR, private rooms from 865 ZAR.

3. Never at Home Green Point

The exterior of the Never at Home Green Point hostel in Cape Town, South Africa

But what the hostel lacks in comfort it more than makes up for with its super friendly staff and energetic atmosphere. They organize daily activities and events like trivia, braais , and hikes, so it’s super easy to meet people. There’s also an active hostel WhatsApp group, daily happy hours at the bar, bike rentals, a pool, a large kitchen, and a few indoor workspaces if you work online.

Never at Home Green Point at a glance :

  • Fun bar and pool for hanging out
  • Daily events and activities
  • Dorms have AC

Beds from 372 ZAR, private rooms from 1,562 ZAR.

4. Atlantic Point

A sunny common area outside at the Atlantic Point hostel in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa

The dorms aren’t huge but they’re clean and bright and the beds have thick mattresses as well as lamps and shelves (no privacy curtains though). Only some of the rooms have AC though, so be sure to book one if you’re visiting during the sweltering summer months.

Atlantic Point at a glance :

  • Bar with a daily happy hour
  • Free breakfast
  • Chill outdoor area with a pool

Beds from 315 ZAR, private rooms from 1,403 ZAR.

5. Long Street Backpackers

A sunny courtyard at the Long Street backpacker hostel in Cape Town, South Africa

The outdoor garden area is a quiet oasis away from the booming hostel bar, which hosts nightly events like karaoke, beer pong, and open mics. Like most party hostels, the dorms have cheap metal bunks with no curtains and basic mattresses, but if you’re staying here sleep probably isn’t your priority!

Long Street Backpackers at a glance :

  • Lively parties every night
  • Central location with no load-shedding
  • Budget friendly

Beds from 195 ZAR, private rooms from 640 ZAR.

Cape Town is a large city with a lot to offer, so picking the right hostel based on what you want to see and do is important. Fortunately, there are a ton of amazing options here, ensuring that you’ll have a fun and affordable visit to this postcard-perfect destination.

Book Your Trip to Cape Town: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Use Skyscanner to find a cheap flight. They are my favorite search engine because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • Insure My Trip (for those over 70)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)
