Tom Cruise will “hopefully” become “the first civilian to do a spacewalk” outside of the International Space Station when he blasts off to space to shoot a new action movie with director Doug Liman . Donna Langley , the head of Universal Pictures , teased as much during a recent BBC interview . Universal is backing the Cruise space project, which reportedly carries a budget in the $200 million range. While it was already known the movie would shoot scenes on the ISS, Langley said the plan is to also have Cruise perform a spacewalk.

Popular on Variety

Liman and Cruise previously collaborated on films such as “Edge of Tomorrow” (2014) and “American Made” (2017). Further plot details about the duo’s space movie are being kept under wraps, although they are working with both NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX company. No Hollywood studio has ever filmed a narrative feature film in space before.

“When a producer proposes something crazy to you, like, let’s try to shoot a movie in outer space, and NASA and SpaceX sign on, and Tom Cruise signs on… you’re just a little bit more receptive,” Liman told Thrillist last year about boarding the project.

Sources previously told Variety the film’s production budget has been set at $200 million. Cruise could earn somewhere between $30 million and $60 million, according to insiders. This would cover his services as a producer and star, and also be comprised of significant first-dollar gross participation.

Remember Tom Cruise's Space Movie? We Finally Have Some New Details

It’s about time we got an update!

Tom Cruise as Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise will be keeping movie fans entertained in the coming years with Top Gun: Maverick , Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 , but let’s not forget that he’ll also be leaving Earth at some point to provide us with cinematic entertainment. Back in 2020, it was reported that Cruise was teaming with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Doug Liman and Christopher McQuarrie for a movie that will be shot in outer space . It’s been a while since we’ve received any updates on the project, but now we finally have some new details to take in.

Starting off, Universal Pictures is reportedly intending to begin production on this untitled space movie sometime next year, and the studio is waiting for director Doug Liman to deliver the script he’s co-writing with Christopher McQuarrie . The studio is specifically expecting the space movie to be what Cruise tackles next after he and McQuarrie finish shooting Mission: Impossible 8 , which began production not long after Mission: Impossible 7 wrapped up filming in September .

Variety also mentioned in its report that this Universal Pictures feature will only be “partially shot” on the International Space Station, with most of the footage being shot on Earth and some also being obtained on a rocket. Furthermore, rather than being a sci-fi movie, this project is described as an “action-adventure story” that sees Tom Cruise playing a “down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth.”

So now we have a bit of a clearer picture on what to expect from Tom Cruise’s space movie, both with production plans and finally having a basic premise. Unfortunately, Cruise and the gang lost the big screen space race last year , as footage was shot on the International Space Station for a Russian film called The Challenge last October. However, with Cruise’s space outing being a Hollywood production, you can be sure that it’ll rank among the more widely-viewed new movie releases .

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie go way back to when the latter started leading the charge in the Mission: Impossible film series starting with Rogue Nation , and the actor previously worked with Doug Liman on Edge of Tomorrow . While it would have been understandable if either of these men had to exit this space-set project due to scheduling conflicts or other reasons, as of now, they’re still guiding it along. Funny enough, when Cruise, McQuarrie and Liman pitched the space movie to Universal, they didn’t even have a draft of the script , but the studio was impressed enough to pour $200 million into the project .

Hopefully we won’t have to wait a long time again to learn more about Tom Cruise’s space movie, but whenever major updates do arrive, CinemaBlend will pass the along. In the meantime, Cruise can next be seen in Top Gun : Maverick starting May 27, while Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 were recently pushed back to July 14, 2023 and June 28, 2024, respectively.

Tom Cruise Might Become the First Civilian to Spacewalk at the ISS

Universal is game to send Cruise into space for a proposed action film, but plans aren’t official yet

Astronaut on spacewalk

Astronauts spend years undergoing rigorous training before they make their first trip into space. And before becoming astronauts, they usually already have years of experience in related fields, such as engineering, geology, aeronautics, physics, medicine and biology; many have doctorates or have seen military combat.

But for actor Tom Cruise , a trip to space might just be another day at the office. Cruise hopes to shoot scenes for an as-yet-untitled action film at the International Space Station (ISS) in the near future. If he succeeds, he’d become “the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station,” according to Donna Langley , chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group.

In a lengthy interview with the BBC ’s Katie Razzall, Langley reveals a few more details about the proposed movie, which is “still an aspiration at this stage,” per the BBC.

“Tom Cruise is taking us to space, he’s taking the world to space,” Langley tells the BBC. “That’s the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom.”

Tom Cruise at press conference

Cruise and director Doug Liman , who worked together on the 2014 movie Edge of Tomorrow , pitched the idea for the new film to Langley on a Zoom call during the pandemic. Though she didn’t share too many specific details about the plot, the general gist is that the storyline “actually takes place on earth, and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day.”

Cruise is already known for doing many of his own stunts, including some potentially dangerous ones , so it comes as no surprise that he’s willing to take a rocket to the space station for the sake of cinema. As Daniel Kreps writes for Rolling Stone , it’s unclear whether Cruise would actually go inside the ISS or just walk around outside of the orbiting laboratory.

NASA, for its part, seems willing to collaborate on the movie. Though he has since deleted the tweet, former NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine wrote in May 2020 that the agency is looking forward to working with Cruise. “We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make NASA’s ambitious plans a reality,” he wrote. Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, which is working with NASA on a number of projects, replied that the project “should be a lot of fun!” As Deadline ’s Mike Fleming Jr. reported at the time, Musk, Cruise and NASA were all reportedly working together to make the film a reality.

Despite his lack of official astronaut training, Cruise does have some cinematic experience with space and aviation. In 2013, he played a futuristic drone technician who must defend Earth against alien invaders in Oblivion . He also narrated the 2002 Imax documentary Space Station 3D . One of his most popular air-and-space-related films, of course, is Top Gun , the 1986 flick about Navy fighter pilots. Cruise also recently starred in the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick .

Astronaut underwater

Since the space station’s launch nearly 24 years ago in 1998, ISS crewmembers have made just 253 spacewalks —in other words, they’re not something NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), Roscosmos or any of the other major space station partners take lightly. Spacewalks are inherently dangerous and, as such, NASA has a whole slew of rules and guidelines around them. As Paola Rosa-Aquino writes for Space.com , they’re also expensive and time-consuming—whenever possible, crewmembers try to use robotic arms to work outside the ISS.

Sometimes, though, astronauts (and Russian cosmonauts) have to go on spacewalks as a last resort. They typically have very specific reasons for leaving the space station, such as performing maintenance or installing new equipment. NASA calls these adventures “extravehicular activities.”

Wearing highly specialized suits outfitted with life support gear, crewmembers depart the space station through a special set of airlock doors. They remain attached to the space station via tethers, and they usually spend five to eight hours in space while completing their objectives.

Astronauts must complete special training before they undertake spacewalks. They spend a lot of time at NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory near the Johnson Space Center in Houston. There, they practice spacewalks in a  6.2-million-gallon pool  in which they neither sink nor float. For every hour a crewmember will spend on an ISS spacewalk, they must spend seven hours in the pool, per NASA . They also train via virtual reality technologies that simulate extravehicular activities.

If Cruise ever does make it into orbit, there is another thing he’ll have to keep in mind: remembering to focus in the face of the vast cosmos. And that’s not necessarily an easy feat, as NASA astronaut Mike Fincke told CNN ’s Ashley Strickland last year.

“It’s really truly breathtaking,” he told the publication. “The only thing between you and the rest of the universe, seeing the whole cosmos of creation, is the glass faceplate of your visor on your helmet, and it’s just awe-inspiring.”

Tom Cruise's space movie: Release date, cast, plot for Cruise's Space Station movie

Turns out, the sky isn't the limit for cruise.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Seemingly not content with chucking himself off scarily high places, stunt-loving star Tom Cruise looks set to become the first Hollywood actor to shoot a major motion picture in space.

News of Cruise’s as-yet-untitled space movie initially arrived online in 2020 and since then, the actor has delivered a double-punch of huge hits including 2021’s Top Gun: Maverick and the first instalment of Missing: Impossible’s latest two-parter Dead Reckoning.

Both were massive hits with fans and critics alike — and if you believe filmmaking icon Steven Spielberg — the latter even saved cinema during its darkest hour.

Read more: Tom Cruise's most daring stunts

In fact, with his addiction to death-defying stunts showing no signs of slowing, it sometimes feels like there’s nothing Cruise can’t do. With that in mind, what better actor is there to go where no actor has ever gone before and embark on the first American feature film ever made in the inky void above our heads?

Here’s everything we know about Cruise’s space flick so far.

Tom Cruise space movie release date

Despite being announced back in 2020 and with those close to the project delivering a steady stream of updates, Cruise’s high-flying space movie doesn’t have a solid release date yet.

With the film yet to enter production, it’s unlikely that one will be unveiled anytime soon. Plus, Cruise has a second Mission to un-Impossible before he starts work on anything new, with Dead Reckoning Part Two coming to cinemas in 2024.

With this in mind, it could be 2025 or 2026 before Cruise’s space epic lands in our orbit.

What is the plot of Tom Cruise’s space movie?

When the project was first announced, Variety billed it as a film that would “make history” as the “first narrative feature shot in space.” However, as more time has passed, a few more details have come to light that clue us in on what this groundbreaking space adventure might look like.

The project will be produced by Universal Pictures and helmed by Doug Liman , a filmmaker that Cruise has collaborated with before on 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow and 2017’s American Made. The film reportedly has a budget of around $200 million (£153million) and has recruited the assistance of Elon Musk ’s SpaceX and NASA who will allow the production to shoot on the International Space Station.

Additional details were unveiled by the head of Universal Pictures, Donna Langley, who told the BBC “Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He’s taking the world to space. That’s the plan.

“We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”

Langley also spilt some beans regarding the film’s plot, revealing that the movie “actually [mostly] takes place on Earth, and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day.” According to Universal, Cruise will play a down-on-his-luck everyman that soon discovers he’s the only person who can save the world via a quick trip to space.

If all goes to plan, the movie will be a landmark, as no Hollywood production has ever attempted to helm a movie in the dangerous surroundings of outer space.

Liman spoke to Thrillist about being the person responsible for helming such a project, explaining that “when a producer proposes something crazy to you, like, let’s try to shoot a movie in outer space, and NASA and SpaceX sign on, and Tom Cruise signs on… you’re just a little bit more receptive.”

Cut to 2023 and during a red carpet premiere of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One , Cruise confirmed that he and Liman were “working on it diligently and we’ll see where we go” but noted that the movie did not yet have an official start date.

These comments were similarly confirmed by ITV, who captured Cruise saying : "We're working on that. I'm working on that, definitely,” when asked about his space movie.

"I've always wanted to do that... We've been doing a lot of research for years.”

While no American-made film production has ever captured a movie in space, the blank void has been used as a backdrop for a film before. Russian-made feature The Challenge came out earlier this year and reportedly took its cast for a 12-day shoot in space.

Tom Cruise space movie cast

With the movie still firmly in pre-production, it’s currently unclear who might join Cruise on his latest nail-biting adventure.

The project’s official IMDB page currently only lists the Top Gun actor as its sole star. However, we’re sure more faces will join him as the film prepares for takeoff.

Tom Cruise space movie trailer

If you came here looking for a stunt-filled trailer for Cruise’s new space movie, then unfortunately we can’t show you the money. Much like details of the movie's cast, it’s just a bit too early to expect any video clips or full trailers for this one. However, as soon as they land, you’ll find them here.

The Tom Cruise space movie is coming soon.

Tom Cruise Might Actually Go to Space for Upcoming Film

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Over two years after it was first reported that Tom Cruise might shoot a film aboard the International Space Station, it appears that the actor is inching closer to becoming “the first civilian to do a spacewalk.”

Back in May 2020, NASA confirmed that they were in talks with Cruise and SpaceX on some sort of film project that was unrelated to the actor’s Mission: Impossible films. “We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality,” NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine wrote at the time.

With Top Gun: Maverick released and the next M: I installments on the way, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Donna Langley told the BBC that sending Cruise to space is among the studio’s mission, and shared more details about the project.

Rather than relying on boring old CGI technology like every other space movie, Cruise — known for doing his own increasingly death-defying stunts — will actually rocket up to the ISS and become “the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station”; it’s unclear whether he’ll stroll around outside the station, as Langley said, or if he’ll actually enter the ISS, as NASA previously stated.

However, the movie is still in the dream phase and hasn’t begun production yet. Cruise does have some previous ISS experience having narrated, via Earth, the 2002 IMAX documentary Space Station 3D .

A talk with Tom Cruise as the astronauts cruise around the planet.

will tom cruise go to space

By Kenneth Chang

  • Sept. 17, 2021

Maverick has called space.

The Inspiration4 crew has talked to the actor Tom Cruise: Maverick was the call sign of his fighter pilot character in the 1986 movie “Top Gun.”

Rook, Nova, Hanks, and Leo spoke to @TomCruise sharing their experience from space. Maverick, you can be our wingman anytime. pic.twitter.com/5YTfyRZhrd — Inspiration4 (@inspiration4x) September 17, 2021

Like the Top Gun character, the four astronauts orbiting Earth have their own call signs. Jared Isaacman, the billionaire underwriting the mission, has flown fighter jets and already had a call sign: Rook, short for rookie. As part of the training for flying to orbit, Mr. Isaacman took his crewmates up in the air for fighter jet flights so they could experience high-G forces during sharp turns.

The other three crew members chose their own call signs. Hayley Arceneaux is Nova, Sian Proctor is Leo and Christopher Sembroski is Hanks.

Mr. Cruise also has space dreams. In May 2020, Jim Bridenstine, then the administrator of NASA, confirmed that the space agency had talked with Mr. Cruise about shooting a film on the International Space Station.

Since then, there has been no update about the progress of the movie or when Mr. Cruise may blast off. But he will return to the cockpit in a sequel called “Top Gun: Maverick,” now expected to be released in May 2022.

But if he does go, he will probably not be the first actor shooting a movie in space. A Russian actress and a director are scheduled to visit the space station next month to make a movie named “Challenge,” about a surgeon sent to orbit to save the life of a Russian astronaut.

UK company behind Tom Cruise space film unveils plans to launch space movie studio

Introducing see-1, reportedly coming in 2024.

An animation of the SEE-1 module attached to Axiom’s space station on the ISS.

On Thursday, a UK-based company that claims to be producing Tom Cruise’s upcoming film in space said it plans to attach the first-ever space movie studio and sports arena to the International Space Station as early as 2024.

Called Space Entertainment Enterprise, or S.E.E., the company also announced it is working with commercial space station builder Axiom Space, which has its own partnership with NASA to build and attach an experimental space station to the ISS. That station is called Axiom Station, and Axiom hopes to launch its first module, called Axiom Hub 1, to the ISS by 2024. The company will then build out the space station before eventually separating it from the ISS in 2028 and making it a free-flying vehicle.

S.E.E. plans to attach its own module to the new growing space station in December of 2024

But while Axiom Station is attached to the ISS, S.E.E. plans to attach its own module to the growing space station in December of 2024. Dubbed SEE-1, the module will be available to individuals who want to film or live stream content in space, “including films, television, music, and sports events,” according to a press release announcing the news. Animated videos and images of SEE-1 on the company’s website show the module as a giant white sphere, though there were no available designs of what the interior will look like.

Though the module will belong to S.E.E., it is being built by Axiom Space. According to the S.E.E. press release, it will be an inflatable module that will stretch up to 6 meters, or nearly 20 feet, in diameter. S.E.E. says that it will allow third parties to also use the studio for their own projects. No costs or estimated budgets were provided for the project, nor did S.E.E. detail how much it would charge others to use the studio.

“Adding a dedicated entertainment venue to Axiom Station’s commercial capabilities in the form of SEE-1 will expand the station’s utility as a platform for a global user base and highlight the range of opportunities the new space economy offers,” Michael Suffredini, Axiom’s CEO, said in a statement.

S.E.E. also revealed itself to be the production company behind Tom Cruise’s mystery space movie

With today’s announcement, S.E.E. also revealed itself to be the production company behind Tom Cruise’s mystery space movie. In 2020, NASA announced that it was working with the famous actor to potentially send him to the International Space Station to film a project. The actor’s ride to space is reportedly SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule, which is used to ferry NASA astronauts to and from the ISS.

Later, NASA confirmed in a podcast that Axiom was going to be involved in getting Tom Cruise to orbit . While Axiom builds space stations, it has also contracted with NASA and SpaceX to buy rides on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon to send private individuals to the ISS. Axiom’s first private astronaut mission on a Crew Dragon, called Axiom-1, is scheduled to take flight in March . However, there’s no set date or confirmation for Tom Cruise’s flight. As for what Cruise plans to film up in the cosmos, all that’s been reported so far is that director Doug Liman is involved and that the film will not be a Mission: Impossible movie.

S.E.E. was co-founded by producers Elena and Dmitry Lesnevsky. Their company boasts an impressive list of consultants of former Viacom and HBO executives. The company says it’s currently looking for investors on the Tom Cruise space project, which Deadline reported in 2020 would have a budget of at least $200 million.

However, it’s possible the budget could be even higher, given how much going to space costs. Just one seat on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is thought to run around $55 million , plus NASA charges additional fees for private astronauts using the space station’s facilities while in orbit. S.E.E. says it plans to conduct a fundraising round soon.

Tom Cruise is known for doing his own wild stunts in movies like the "Mission: Impossible" series, so it's not surprising that he might walk in space for an upcoming movie.

"Tom Cruise is taking us to space, he's taking the world to space. That's the plan," Donna Langley, the head of Universal Pictures, recently told the BBC . "We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the [International Space Station] and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station."

The project was first announced in 2020 as an action-adventure film that would be the first scripted feature to film in space. NASA and Elon Musk's company SpaceX were involved with the effort, and it's set to be directed by "The Bourne Identity" and "Edge of Tomorrow" director Doug Liman.

Few details have been revealed since, though multiple outlets, including Deadline and Variety , have reported the estimated production cost to be around $200 million — a hefty pricetag for a non-franchise movie today.

But Cruise's star power remains strong, especially after the massive success of "Top Gun: Maverick," which is currently the highest-grossing movie of the year with $1.48 billion worldwide, including $715 million in the US.

When reached for comment by Insider on SpaceX's involvement and the production budget, Universal said there weren't any new details to share. SpaceX did not return a request for comment on whether it was still involved in the film.

Cruise is no stranger to death-defying stunts. He jumped out of a plane at 30,000 feet 106 times to get the perfect shot for a sequence in 2018's "Mission: Impossible — Fallout." And for the next installment in the franchise, due for theatrical release next year, he rode a motorcycle off a cliff .

Tom Cruise Is Making a Movie in Space With SpaceX and NASA

Scientologist Tom Cruise in a tuxedo

Greetings, earthlings. Welcome to another edition of The Monitor , WIRED’s entertainment news roundup. This time around we have news about a Labyrinth sequel (nearly 35 years later, but we’ll take it), a new pandemic-ready movie that was shot on an iPhone, and Tom Cruise's plans to film in space. Here, let us explain.

As you might recall, a few weeks ago we told you about some rumors flying around Hollywood suggesting that Tom Cruise wanted to shoot a movie in space with the help of NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX . Turns out, there was something to them after all. Per a report on Deadline , director Doug Liman, who directed Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow , is on board to helm a new action film that will enlist the help of NASA and SpaceX for at least some of the filming.

Little is known about the plot, but Deadline’s report notes that Liman wrote the first draft of the script and Cruise is a producer on the film. Given the current pandemic and the training Cruise and others will likely have to go through, there’s no telling exactly when the film could start production, but it looks like this one might actually happen. Let’s see if we can get #SendTomCruiseToSpace trending.

Speaking of surprising news, Labyrinth is getting a sequel. Deadline is reporting that Scott Derrickson will direct the follow-up to the 1986 Jim Henson classic. The movie, which has the backing of the Jim Henson Company, will be written by Maggie Levin, who wrote and directed the “My Valentine” installment of Hulu’s Into the Dark . Derrickson recently stepped away from the sequel to his Marvel film Doctor Strange over creative differences.

If there’s one movie that encompasses Right Now, it might be IWeirDo . The rom-com and debut feature from Taiwan’s Liao Ming-Yi was filmed entirely using an iPhone XS and features two soulmates—a girl who is a germophobe and a guy who is almost constantly washing his hands. Oh, also you’ll be able to watch its premiere online due to the coronavirus . The film is opening the Far East Film Festival , which typically takes place in Udine, Italy, but this year is happening online as that country continues to deal with Covid-19. The festival will take place June 26 to July 4, and IWeirDo will premiere on Italian site MyMovies .

Everything to Know About Tom Cruise’s New Movie Set in Actual Space

US actor Tom Cruise attends a press conference for the film 'Top Gun: Maverick'

CGI won’t be necessary when it comes to Tom Cruise’s newest project. The actor has fought aliens in robot suits, traveled to the depths of the galaxy, and has flown numerous types of planes and jets, all with the help of movie magic. But when it comes to the space walk he’s set to take for his new film with director Doug Liman, the plan is this time for it to be the real deal.

Universal Pictures is backing Cruise and Liman’s new movie, which plans to film at least some scene in actual space. Donna Langley, the chairman of Universal told the BBC that the hope is for Cruise to head up in a rocket to the International Space Station and from there, to be “the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”

To help with that goal, Liman and Universal have enlisted both SpaceX and NASA. Liman also reportedly has a budget of around $200 million, according to Variety . Cruise, apparently, is said to be getting anywhere from $30 to $60 million for his role as the star and producer of the film.

Cruise and Liman originally pitched the film, which doesn’t yet have a name, to Langley during the pandemic over Zoom. Langley clarified that the majority of the movie will actually take place on earth. Cruise will play “a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth” and he will eventually have to “go up to space to save the day.” As of now, there isn’t much more information on the plot of the movie, or the timeline for its filming.

Tom Cruise is still charting his work trip to space.

Back in 2020 it was revealed that the actor was planning to film a movie in outer space .

While at the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One premiere in New York City this week, Cruise, 61, was asked about the status of the space-exploring film.

“We’ve been working on it diligently,” he teased to Variety . “We’ll see where we go.”

The project was first announced by NASA back in 2020, days after a report came out claiming Cruise was looking to space for cinematic inspiration.

NASA director Jim Bridenstein led the charge: “NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station! We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.”

Elon Musk , founder of SpaceX , tacked onto the excitement. “Should be a lot of fun!" Musk replied in a tweet.

Weeks later, Deadline reported that the project had confirmed Doug Liman to direct . Cruise and Liman previously worked together on 2014's Edge of Tomorrow and 2017's American Made .

Two years later, Universal Pictures executive Donna Langley confirmed the movie’s production in an interview with BBC News .

“I think Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He's taking the world to space," Langley said. "That's the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom that does contemplate him doing just that, taking a rocket up to the Space Station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a space walk outside of the Space Station."

The upcoming film, which Langley said Cruise pitched to her over a Zoom call during the pandemic, has a budget in the area of $200 million, according to Variety .

“During the pandemic he asked for a Zoom call with us and got onto the call and said, 'Guys, I've got this great project and here it is,' " Langley said. "The majority of the story actually takes place on Earth and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day.”

While Cruise works “diligently” on his space film, he is currently rolling out his latest Mission: Impossible movie. While Dead Reckoning Part One can be found in theaters now, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie admitted that Part Two is yet to be completed. “We finish this tour, and on our way back to the U.K. we stop to scout along the way. We hit the ground running as soon as we get back,” McQuarrie told Variety . “I get two days of vacation between here and Tokyo and I’m back on.”

Tom Cruise plans to film a movie in space — and could be the first civilian to do a spacewalk

By Li Cohen

October 11, 2022 / 11:57 AM EDT / CBS News

Tom Cruise's next mission could make history. If the plans for an upcoming film come through, he would fly to space to film the moment where he helps save the planet.

Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Film Entertainment Group, told the BBC in an interview last week that the 60-year-old "Mission Impossible" and "Top Gun" actor will be "taking the world to space."

"That's the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom that does contemplate him doing just that," she said, "taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station."

She said the film request came from Cruise directly and that he is in close collaboration with director Doug Liman, who previously worked with Cruise in 2014's "Edge of Tomorrow" and is also known for "The Bourne Identity" franchise, "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" and "Jumper."

"During the pandemic, he asked for a Zoom call with us and got onto the call and said, 'Guys, I have this great project and here it is,'" Langley recalled in the interview.

The title and details of the film have not been announced, but Langley said the majority of the story will take place on Earth before Cruise's character "needs to go up to space to save the day."

The project was first confirmed in 2020 by NASA's then-director Jim Bridenstine. Deadline reported at that time that Elon Musk's SpaceX was also going to collaborate on the film.

Space Entertainment Enterprise announced in January this year that it would work with Axiom Space to build a content and entertainment studio and "multi-purpose arena" space station module. The venture, called SEE-1, is planned to launch in late 2024 and would be connected to the Axiom Station, a commercial module planned for the International Space Station.

Last year, Russian actress Julia Peresild and filmmaker Klim Shipenko  spent 12 days aboard the International Space Station working on the first feature film shot in space , with Peresild playing s a doctor making an emergency house call in orbit.

Tom Cruise asks NASA astronaut Victor Glover all about spaceflight (video)

The "Mission: Impossible" and "Top Gun" star appears to be prepping for his own voyage to space in 2024.

"Top Gun" star Tom Cruise and NASA astronaut Victor Glover bonded virtually over fast planes and SpaceX spaceships in a wide-ranging conversation about astronaut training.

NASA's Johnson Space Flight Center posted the hour-long conversation on YouTube on Friday (Jan. 28), rebroadcasting a November 2021 conversation during the World Extreme Medicine conference.

Cruise is the one asking most of the questions, as he appears to be mentally preparing himself for his own spaceflight in a few years, during which he will be the first Hollywood star to go to space for real with a visit to the International Space Station.

Tom Cruise calls NASA astronaut Victor Glover at the International Space Station.

"I have a few questions for you, if you don't mind," Cruise says near the beginning of the conversation, encouraging Glover right away to "call me Tom."

Tom Cruise's upcoming unnamed space movie , co-produced by U.K.-based Space Entertainment Enterprise, may also benefit from a newly announced inflatable space station module with a production studio commissioned from Houston-based  Axiom Space .

Meanwhile, for Glover, it was a chance to showcase astronaut training along with what it's really like to be on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft. Glover flew on the first operational SpaceX taxi for astronauts, a mission known as Crew-1 , that landed in May 2021 after 167 days in space.

The company Axiom Space is taking reservations for space tourist trips to a private habitat on the International Space Station (shown here in an artist's view). But it's not cheap: the trip costs $55 million.

"The Dragon has a touchscreen. The displays are also where the controls are. That's quite different than flying an aircraft with a stick and a throttle," Glover said, admitting he was skeptical at first about the design.

"I was like, 'I don't know guys, I need my interceptors. I need something to move around," Glover, who is also a U.S. Navy Captain with more than 3,000 flight hours of experience, recalled of his reaction. "But as I learned more about what the vehicle does, and what its purpose was, the touchscreen actually was wonderful. It worked great."

Glover shared some anecdotes about "pulling Gs," or experiencing several times the force of Earth's gravity , in both fighter jets and aircraft.

"In the fighter, the Gs go from your head to your toe," he explained to Cruise, "and that's why we practice these specific maneuvers to keep blood flow to your brain. You stay conscious and you don't gray out or blackout, but the Gs on a rocket launch goes into your chest. And so you naturally can can sustain more Gs in that direction."

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the company's Crew Dragon spacecraft is launched on NASA’s SpaceX Crew-1 mission to the International Space Station with NASA astronauts Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Soichi Noguchi onboard, Sunday, Nov. 15, 2020, at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Cruise is a certified pilot himself, with many fans of the action star likely already aware that he did many of the helicopter stunts in 2018's "Mission Impossible: Fallout," according to Screen Rant .

While he sat in the passenger seat of an F-14 during the blockbuster 1986 hit "Top Gun," Cruise recalled in the interview with Glover briefly pulling 9.5 Gs, or 9.5 times the force of Earth's gravity. But after discussing G-forces during launch (the Falcon 9 forced about 4 Gs on the crew for a few minutes), Cruise then asked Glover what he would consider the most demanding part of the mission.

Glover said it depends on how you frame the question, whether it is a short-term thing or a long-term thing, but he would pick the four spacewalks he performed during his mission .

"You're moving around in a suit that can weigh, with your body, as much as 1,000 pounds [450 kilograms] — and you very rarely use your legs," Glovers aid. "It's like running two marathons, but on your hands the whole time. Your hands and fingers are very sore when you're done with this."

NASA astronaut Victor Glover is pictured outside the International Space Station on Jan. 27, 2021, on his first-ever spacewalk.

Cruise added that he's been fitted for a spacesuit, but he didn't mention if his upcoming mission would include a spacewalk . No non-professional astronaut has been on a spacewalk, although Cruise fans might bet that he would try — given he has done other high-profile stunts for movies like actually climbing the massive Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai for 2011's "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol."

In the conversation, however, Cruise shifted to asking Glover about countermeasures the astronauts usually take in space, which commonly includes things like a couple of hours of cardiovascular and weightlifting exercise daily. Astronauts also get some "time off" to pursue hobbies and enjoy festive meals with their crewmates, among other mental health items.

Cruise also asked if Glover felt any weaker across his four spacewalks, given he was losing bone mass in space , as is usual for long-duration space missions. Glover said no, and noted he actually gained a little muscle mass thanks to regular exercise with the space station's Advanced Exercise Resistive Device that uses pistons for weightlifting.

"By the time we went out the door," Glover explained, "I felt stronger, actually, over my mission. [But] I did lose a little bit of bone mass. I lost about 2% of my bone mass, and they [doctors] say I'll have that recovered in about a year."

Astronaut Sandra Magnus, Expedition 18 flight engineer, exercises on the Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED) in the Unity node of the International Space Station.

Most of the conversation, in fact, covered health in space . The two pilots go over everything from how to deal with routine itches in your spacesuit, the menu items astronauts get to pick, readjusting to Earth's gravity after splashdown, and smaller changes in how the body functions after a long period of time in space. (When Cruise heard that basic astronaut training does not include skydiving, Cruise promised Glover that the two of them would jump out a plane together sometime.)

They also chatted about the view from space. Glover said during his time in the capsule on the way to the ISS, he did have to stay focused on the mission. But he did have some time to relax and take in the views as he took off his spacesuit, went to the bathroom and otherwise made himself comfortable for the 27-hour journey to the station.

"I went to the to the window and looked out," Glover recalled, adding that he was at first surprised to see the Earth was sideways due to the orientation of the spacecraft. "I felt like I was underneath the Earth," he added. "I was just amazed at the view, how much detail that I could see ... so I just grabbed my iPad, and I started recording a video. It wasn't that I wanted to share the imagery with people. I wanted to capture the feeling that I was just awestruck."

The view of Earth from space as seen by the Crew-1 astronauts on the SpaceX Crew Dragon Resilience.

We also learned about how the space station smells , as long as you're not right beside the toilet. "It smells very much like a factory; it has this machine sterile metallic quality to it, and it very much smells like a workspace," Glover said. "You know, when you walk into a hospital, you sense that? Yeah, it smells like a hospital, it's got this antiseptic, germ-free quality."

Toward the conversation's end, Cruise told Glover that he was conducting the conversation from England's Duxford Aerodrome, south of Cambridge. "This is a Spitfire behind me right here," he said, referring to a single-seater British warplane used during World War II.

"We're flying a bunch of stuff," he added, saying it was in support of the new movie "Top Gun: Maverick," currently expected to be released in May 2022. "We're gonna be flying this thing when I get off here," Cruise said of the Spitfire. "We're gonna go fly some Spitfires [and we've] got a Mustang here, too."

Cruise also promised Glover a ride in the Mustang sometime, which Glover said was always a "bucket list" item for him as he has not yet had the opportunity to fly that aircraft type. "You had me at hello," Glover joked. "Yes, sign me up."

Tom cruise set to become first actor to shoot movie in outer space.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Tom Cruise is set to become the first actor to shoot a movie in space.

Just when you thought Tom Cruise achieved his greatest possible cinematic triumph with the success of the Top Gun sequel, the blockbuster star comes up with an idea that is, quite literally, out of this world.

The 60-year-old Hollywood veteran has reportedly teamed up with  The Bourne Identity  director Doug Liman on a movie pitch that involves filming in space, which was first tabled in 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic halted plans.

Cruise and Liman are said to have reached out to Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG) on an idea which will see the actor take a rocket up to the International Space Station.

Tom Cruise has done nearly every possible stunt on Earth, and space is next on the list.

“I think Tom Cruise is taking us to space, he’s taking the world to space,” UFEG Chairman Donna Langley said, per BBC News.

“That’s the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom … Taking a rocket up to the Space Station and shooting.”

Langley revealed most of the movie would be shot on earth, culminating in “the character [going] up to space to save the day”, adding she is hopeful Cruise will become “the first civilian to do a space walk outside of the space station.”

Doug Liman, who directed The Bourne Identity, is teaming up with Tom Cruise for the actor's next blockbuster.

If the film gets off the ground, Cruise would be the first movie star to shoot in outer space on the International Space Station.

While the move is certainly unprecedented, it’s fair to say it’s unsurprising Cruise is setting his sights for space, with the  Jerry Maguire  actor renowned for his ambitious stunt work.

On Cruise’s 60th birthday in July,  Mission: Impossible  director Christopher McQuarrie  shared a rare photo of the US actor performing a truly insane stunt .

In the image, Cruise can be seen dangling from an airborne red biplane with very little – if any – assistance.

He made headlines when he was injured on the set of  Mission Impossible 6  in 2017, with leaked video footage showing his death-defying leap onto a rooftop go horribly wrong.

Cruise was seen slamming into a building, hanging mid-air in his harness before pulling himself up onto the roof and stumbling towards crew members.

The logistics are not clear yet, but Cruise would utilize the ISS as the background for the movie.

Just a few months later, he was back on-set in London shooting stunts again.

Cruise was recently asked at the Cannes Film Festival why he chooses to forgo a stunt actor, reportedly responding: “No one asked Gene Kelly, ‘Why do you dance?’”

Appreciation for Cruise, who has been working in Hollywood since the early ’80s, is at a fever pitch after the huge success of the long-awaited sequel , Top Gun: Maverick .

It became the fifth highest-grossing film in Australia just a few weeks after its May release, having since rocketed to third place and notched over $1.4 billion at the global box office.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

When is Tom Cruise going to space?

Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise is known for his ridiculously high-stakes stunts, which he insists on doing himself in movies like the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Previously he aced stunts such as hanging out of an airplane with his bare hands while the aircraft was taking off, and for the upcoming seventh and eighth movies in the action franchise, he reportedly learned to fly a WWII fighter jet .

But his most out of this world stunt is yet to come, with the actor space-bound to film his next project.

Last year it was confirmed Cruise would be heading to the International Space Station with the help of Nasa and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, alongside director Doug Linman, to film a project.

While details of the plot are unknown, it was reported Universal gave the green light for a $200 million (£156 million) budget.

While no exact date has been set yet, the SpaceX flight was initially scheduled for October 2021 .

However, the mission on which Cruise was supposed to fly out, the Crew Dragon Axiom Mission 1, was delayed to early 2022 .

Hollywood actor Tom Cruise parachutes.

It was previously reported the mission will send the crew on the International Space Station for an eight-day stay, with speculation it’s a preliminary run for Cruise and Linman to scope out the extra-terrestrial territory.

Nasa and  Elon Musk ’s company are reportedly pouring $200 million (£140m) into this project.

While on the station next year, the Hollywood duo will likely bump into another film crew as the Russians successfully sent their first actor and director to the ISS last week.

Boarding the Soyuz MS-19 on October 5, actress Yulia Peresild was joined by director and co-star Klim Shipenko alongside a crew of two cosmonauts when they blasted off into space.

Russian actress Yulia Peresild attends a training session ahead of the expedition to the International Space Station (ISS) in Star City, Russia.

The Challenge is the title of what will become the first movie shot in space as the Russians take the win over the Americans in this 21st century space race.

‘It will not be on the same level as on Earth, but we will do our best. We are ready for it,’ said Peresild.

‘It is a bit too late to be afraid because we’ve come so far, there is Baikonur [Cosmodrome] ahead and a lot of things (to do) and to be honest, there is just no time left for fear.’

Yulia Peresild.

‘This movie is built around a story of an ordinary person… a doctor who had nothing to do with space exploration and never thought about it is offered to travel to the ISS… and save a cosmonaut’s life,’ said Shipenko.

The project, which is being produced with the help of Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, will also see the cosmonauts take a part in it.

Commander Anton Shkaplerov added: ‘I won’t be starring in it but still I will need to figure out how a movie is produced in such an unusual place as outer space.’

The mission is supposed to end on March 28 of next year which is when we can expect to see some of the first footage.

Tom Cruise Will Go To Space For Upcoming Movie

Tom Cruise might be cruising to space to save the world from bad guys.

Tom Cruise is no stranger to stunts and dangerous scenes in movies, as we have seen time and time again with projects like Mission Impossible and Top Gun . However, Cruise’s speculated upcoming stunt is set to overshadow anything the daredevil has done before.

For his up-and-coming 2024 project, Cruise will be going to the International Space Station and is set to not only be the first to film a movie in outer space but also to be the first civilian to ever spacewalk outside the space station in history.

will tom cruise go to space

The person behind the plans to send Cruise to space is Donna Langley. Langley is the chair of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group and also one of the most powerful people in Hollywood.

She told BBC News that “Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He’s taking the world to space. That’s the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”

The movie is set to be an action film, of course, and will see most of the scenes play out on earth before the actor takes a rocket ship to the International Space Station to save the day from whoever his enemy this time around will be. Langley says the film “actually takes place on earth, and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day.”

Back in 2020, NASA confirmed they were in talks with the movie star to film the first movie in outer space. Now it is speculated that the actor will catch a ride to the International Space Station on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule. Which is regularly used to get NASA astronauts to and from the space station.

Deadline has reported that the budget for the film is possibly around $200 million dollars. Which, for a movie involving rocket ships, SpaceX, NASA, and Tom Cruise, seems like a light estimate. Especially when space-set movies completely shot on Earth have cost more than that to produce.

Currently, the movie is still in scripting and development. But, since Cruise’s latest Top Gun film saw major box office and commercial success, this film, if approved for space filming, will surely follow that trend. If, of course, it doesn’t just top it.

Tom Cruise Is Facing 'the Most Stress' in His Career Ahead of 'Mission: Impossible 8' Release

In Hollywood, one minute you are up, and the next minute you are down. That's what Tom Cruise is facing right now as he's at a crossroads in his storied career. In the summer of 2022, he was riding the wave of Top Gun: Maverick ‘s success at the box office, but last summer, fans stayed away in droves from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One .

Now, Mission: Impossible 8 is reportedly facing more delays after an over $29 million submarine set piece malfunctioned, according to the Mirror . "They're not happy as it puts production behind, which costs a lot of money per day," an on-set insider shared. The May 2025 release is likely in jeopardy because they won't be able to finish the film in time for the scheduled premiere. This setback puts "the weight of the world on [Cruise's] shoulders" because there are "hundreds of millions of dollars on the line," per an In Touch source.

The insider noted that tensions are high and that nobody wants to get on the 61-year-old actor's "bad side between now and next summer." They added, "Sure, he can still flash his famous ‘million-dollar smile' when the cameras are rolling but more frequently he's stone-faced and on edge as he tries to finally bring this production to a close." It's " the most stress and adversity he's ever faced on a production" which is saying a lot after filing the seventh installment of Mission: Impossible "at the height of the pandemic."

Fans will remember "Tom's infamous audio rant recording from that time showed the whole world how stressed he was." It showed a darker side to the star, who rarely lets his A-list image slip . "They're back there in Hollywood making movies right now because of us. We are creating thousands of jobs, you motherf-ers," he yelled in the clip in audio obtained by The Sun in 2020. "I don't ever want to see it again! Ever! If I see you do it again, you're f-ing gone."

Cruise knows he needs to deliver big time for the studios and theater owners in 2025 because the summer of 2024, so far, has been abysmal at the box office. Anyone who has worked with the Days of Thunder star knows that he aims for perfection. Miles Teller recalled to Page Six that while filming Top Gun: Maverick , Cruise would tell his fellow actors, "‘We're trying to hit a bullet with a bullet.'" Those are some pretty high expectations to live up to.

Tom Cruise’s New ‘Mission: Impossible’ Movie Delayed Again After His Appearance Shocks Fans

The movie was already pushed to next year, but now a release date it uncertain amid huge production delays.

  • The new Mission: Impossible movie has been delayed due to issues with a $29 million submarine, pushing back filming and increasing costs.
  • Fans eagerly awaiting the latest installment starring Tom Cruise may have to wait longer, with the release date still uncertain.
  • Concerns about Cruise's appearance have surfaced, with medical experts suggesting his saggy skin might be due to liposuction or simply aging.

Tom Cruise shocked fans earlier this month with his so-called saggy appearance, leading medical experts to chime in, but now his fan base is facing a new surprise – his latest Mission: Impossible has been delayed again.

A broken submarine has delayed cruise’s new movie.

The Mirror reports that the eighth installment of Tom Cruise's blockbuster series has encountered further delays due to an issue with a £23 million ($29 million USD) submarine. According to insiders, the gimbal, which is responsible for lowering the 120-foot-high structure, became jammed under its weight and required repairs.

"They’re not happy as it puts production behind, which costs a lot of money per day," a source revealed, explaining the technical glitch has pushed the filming schedule back by several weeks and increased production costs.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the new movie, which will see Cruise reprise his famous role of secret agent Ethan Hunt. The film was initially slated for a summer release, but persistent delays have plagued the project. This includes last year's Hollywood writers' strike, which had already caused significant disruptions to the film's production schedule.

Initially planned for a summer release, the movie was subsequently postponed to May 2025. However, with these new complications, the exact release date remains uncertain.

The majority of the movie has been filmed in the UK, with a significant portion shot at Longcross Studios in Surrey. But some fans wonder if it’ll live up to the hype – and not only because of the production problems and release date delay. New images of Tom left the Internet shocked, as his usually toned physique didn’t live up to fan expectations.

Why Tom Shocked Fans With His Recent Appearance

Tom Cruise

The photos, which depict Cruise going shirtless, had some people accuse of him having saggy skin. Multiple medical experts chimed in , with some saying he appears to have plastic surgery, while others think his appearance is mostly the result of ageing. But they do agree that Tom looks good for being in his 60s.

Dr. David Hill, a plastic surgeon from Chicago, mentioned to the Daily Mail that Tom's loose skin around his midsection might be a result of undergoing liposuction.

“Usually, if you lose weight naturally over time, you get less of that skin rippling and irregularity, because it's gradual,” he claimed. “With liposuction, because it's more immediate, the skin doesn't have time to contract as much... so Tom's Cruise's saggy skin could be a hallmark of [liposuction].”

However, Dr Howard Sobel, a cosmetic dermatologic surgeon, told the publication he thinks Tom’s changing appearance is just due to age, explaining, “The areas of your chest, and the areas below your chest, the skin around your ribs and your abs are very often the first to lose the elasticity, especially in a man.”

Tom was recently accused of spending a small fortune on his looks , but given the recent reports of delays, it may be a while before fans get to see his face up-close on the big screen.

Every Upcoming DC Movie In 2024 And Beyond

Every actor cast in superman (so far), 10 weirdest x-men characters in fox's movies the mcu won't bring back.

  • Tom Cruise has a franchise deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, hinting at a potential DC role.
  • Cruise is the ideal Hal Jordan for the DC Universe.
  • The age of the DCU's Guy Gardner actor makes Cruise getting cast as Hal Jordan possible.

Tom Cruise has never been closer to joining the DC Universe than he is now, and a major career update explains why that is the case. In recent years, it has become abundantly clear how the days of movie stars — actors who could guarantee a movie would perform well simply by being in it — are behind . While Marvel Studios and DC have had plenty of successful stories of actors becoming huge names after joining their respective cinematic universes, few have had the fortune to remain consistent outside Marvel or DC over the years .

One of the last remaining bona fide movie stars in Hollywood is, without a doubt, Cruise . The actor is one of the most popular action stars to ever exist, and Top Gun: Maverick was one of the movies that helped bring the audience back to theaters after the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to his impressive skills, action experience, and charisma, Cruise has been fancast as multiple superheroes over the years. However, the actor is now closer to appearing in future DCU movies and series than ever before, and that could lead to the perfect DC role for Cruise.

Here's every new DC movie confirmed as in development by WB for 2024 and onwards, including release dates and where they belong in the franchise.

Tom Cruise Has A Franchise Deal With DC’s Parent Company

Cruise's new deal could lead to a dc debut.

While Cruise has yet to sign on for a superhero movie, the actor's new career update could lead to a DC role for him in the future. That is because Cruise has a major deal in place with DC's parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery. It was reported in January that Cruise closed an overall deal with Warner . As part of their joint venture, Cruise will star, develop, and produce " a mix of original productions and franchise fare ," as revealed by the company's press release. That mention of franchise projects is interesting.

One of the biggest franchises Warner owns is DC. With James Gunn and Peter Safran working on bringing their ten-year plan for the new DC Universe to life, Cruise's new overall deal could include developing DC movies. While the actor has not appeared in a prior DC project, Cruise did create some ties to DC Studios last year. Cruise was one of the Hollywood insiders who got to watch DC's The Flash movie before its release. The actor not only liked the movie but reached out to director Andy Muschietti to let him know about it, showing excitement for DC.

Why Tom Cruise Would Be The DCU’s Perfect Hal Jordan

Green lantern is the ideal role for tom cruise.

Cruise is perhaps the best possible actor to play Hal Jordan in the DCU. The star's time in the Top Gun franchise has cemented him as one of the most popular casting choices to play the Green Lantern over the years. While Ryan Reynolds ended up playing Hal Jordan in 2011's Green Lantern — which did not work — and the character was entirely absent from the DCEU, Hal Jordan has been confirmed to be one of the canon characters of the new DCU . In fact, the Green Lantern's debut project has already been announced, and it received a major update recently.

Described as a show in the vein of True Detective , Lanterns will focus on a major mystery with ramifications for the entire DCU.

Hal Jordan will be one of the two main Green Lanterns, alongside John Stewart, in the DCU's Lanterns series . The project has just received its biggest update yet, with the trio of Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof, Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy, and DC Comics writer Tom King serving as the creative force of the DC series . Described as a show in the vein of True Detective , Lanterns will focus on a major mystery with ramifications for the entire DCU. Cruise has plenty of roles in his career that have dealt with darker stories and shocking reveals, making him great for Lanterns .

Adding to that, Cruise's role in the Top Gun franchise showed just how perfect of a fit he is for Hal Jordan. Like the Green Lantern, Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is a fighter jet pilot who oozes charisma and has a knack for danger. Top Gun: Maverick showed a new side of the character as Maverick served in a mentor role to a new generation of pilots, which could also fit the Green Lantern, as Hal Jordan is the original Green Lantern Corps member from Earth, and Cruise could take on younger Green Lanterns under his wing in the DCU.

The DCU’s First Green Lantern Casting Makes Tom Cruise’s Hal Jordan Possible

Guy gardner will appear first.

While Hal Jordan could eventually become the most important Green Lantern in the DCU, as he is in the comics, he will not be the first to debut. Lanterns currently has no set release date or a filming start revealed. Before Hal Jordan and John Stewart arrive on the small screen, the third modern Green Lantern from Earth, Guy Gardner, will arrive on the big screen next year. Nathan Fillion is set to play Guy Gardner in 2025's Superman , with Gunn revealing the actor will sport the character's iconic red hair and bowl cut.

Superman will be the first film released in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe, and the Man of Steel reboot boasts an impressive cast.

Interestingly, Fillion is 53 years old, making him older than what would have been expected for Guy Gardner at the start of the DCU, especially since the DCU's Superman actor, David Corenswet, is only 30. Since Hal Jordan is older than Guy Gardner in the comics , if the DCU were to replicate that, then Cruise would fit the age range for Hal Jordan. At 61, Cruise's Hal Jordan could serve as the mentor to a wide array of Green Lanterns from Earth, which could include unconfirmed characters for the DCU like Kyle Rayner, Jessica Cruz, and more.

What Tom Cruise Has Said About Playing A Superhero

Cruise has made a dc future possible.

As Cruise has been the favorite among fans for a few superhero roles over the years , including the Green Lantern Hal Jordan, the actor has said his piece about the matter. Cruise is open to playing a superhero . The actor revealed that as long as he feels he can contribute to the project, and he thinks " an audience would like to see it, and they're going to be entertained by it ," then Cruise would be open to hearing ideas for superhero projects.

With his new overall deal to be part of franchises at Warner and Cruise being open to superhero roles, his casting as Hal Jordan is the closest it has ever been to happening. It remains to be seen if Lanterns will go for older stars when casting Hal and John Stewart . If that ends up being the case, then it is hard to picture a better actor to play the Green Lantern Hal Jordan than Tom Cruise .

Lanterns (DCU)

Lanterns is a detective show based on DC Comics' Green Lanterns. It started as an HBO Max series centered around Alan Scott, Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, and Simon Baz. However, James Gunn confirmed that the project was redesigned to focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart in the new interconnected DC Universe franchise.
