Continue the tour and visit the famous Areni-1 cave situated near the village of Areni. It is a complex of caves connected by narrow passages where in 2010, the oldest known leather shoe was found (almost 5500 years old), and in 2011, the world’s oldest known winery (5th millennium BC) was discovered.

A hearty lunch at a local winery-restaurant will include tasting of Armenian wines as well. Areni village is a famous center of wine making and is known as the wine capital of Armenia.

Here at the monastery, enjoy a haunting performance of Armenian spiritual songs.

At the nearby Garni village, visit the 1st century Garni pagan temple, the only temple of its kind in the region. It is the best-known structure and symbol of pre-Christian Armenia. During the tour at Garni temple enjoy a short performance of Armenian duduk.

Afterwards, visit a local rustic house where you will have a chance to participate in the making of Armenian bread called lavash, a soft, unleavened flatbread cooked in a ground oven, tonir . Lunch at the rustic house.

What to Pack for Your Tour From Yerevan

Armenia experiences hot summers and fairly cold winters, so pack accordingly based on the season! We do recommend bringing a few of the items below regardless of the season (but, of course, sunscreen is more useful in the shoulder seasons and summer).

If you have additional questions on what to bring to Armenia, please feel free to ask!

During the high season, Armenia can be a very hot destination; with temperatures reaching 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) regularly.

So, make sure you have your sunscreen with you because there are many sites that are sitting under the open skies such as Khor Virap or Tatev Monastery where you need some protection from the scorching sun.

Power bank

The item that every traveler needs is a good power bank . We definitely recommend taking one with you so you can be in reach and have the ability to take photos with your devices.

Some tours might take an entire day and you may not have a place to charge your phone throughout the day, making a power bank essential!

Walking shoes

All tours that you will take have comfortable transportation, but during the exploration of different sites, you will need some good walking shoes.

Armenia is a very rocky country, especially outside of Yerevan. These Yerevan day tours will likely involve a lot of walking around when you’re at the sights and we can not recommend wearing good and comfortable shoes enough!

Water bottle

Armenia has great quality mountain water and for the most part, the water is free and comes from water fountains known as a Pulpulak .

In the hot season, take your water bottle with you so you can fill up it from the many water fountains throughout the country and can stay hydrated.

Yerevan to host conference on effective approaches to rehabilitation in criminal justice

Photo of Siranush Ghazanchyan

On Tuesday 11 June, the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan will organize a conference on exploring effective approaches to rehabilitation in criminal justice: international insights bringing together professionals and experts from different countries.

Organised under the projects “Strengthening the Protection of the Rights of Persons in Detention” and “Strengthening the Probation Service in Armenia” in cooperation with the Pompidou Group and Confederation of European Probation the conference aims to foster insightful discussions and share international perspectives on rehabilitation practices in the view of the key goals for criminal justice systems worldwide – increasing public safety and reducing recidivism rates.

Both projects are part of the Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Armenia (2023-2026).

Council of Europe experts will share experiences and best practices on topics such as the importance of rehabilitation in reducing recidivism and promoting social inclusion, addressing the unique challenges and needs of specific offender groups, and measuring impact and evaluating programme effectiveness.

The participants will include representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Probation and Penitentiary Services and civil society organizations.

The agenda will include keynote addresses by Maxime Longangué, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan; Levon Balyan, Deputy Minister of Justice of RA; Denis Huber, Executive Secretary of the Council of Europe International Cooperation Group on Drugs and Addictions (Pompidou Group),  as well as panel discussions, and Q&A sessions.

The event will take place on Tuesday, 11 June 2024, at DoubleTree by Hilton Yerevan Hotel (4/2 Grigor Lusavorich Street, Yerevan) starting at 2 p.m. local time. The opening part of the conference will be open to media between 2 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. local time, upon prior registration. No separate press briefing is foreseen. English-Armenian interpretation will be provided.
