Warped Tour ’00

Hazy warm sunshine and a steady light sea breeze made for a superb day to enjoy live outdoor music at this ocean-facing open lot at Ventura County Fairgrounds, where a pleasing array of punk, ska and hip-hop bands performed on four stages in an all-day testament to the ongoing vitality of alternative music.

Each act — from newcomers like ranting rockers Papa Roach and hip-hoppers Jurassic 5 to popular bands like Green Day and Mighty Mighty Bosstones — played equal 30-minute sets that segued one to the next, making for a swiftly paced eight-hour event. Bigger groups alternated on two main side-by-side stages while newer acts used smaller platforms.

Bookers managed to avoid including any truly awful bands, and, with more than 35 groups in the mix there was something for just about any young rock fan, though it was unfortunate that J-5 was the only notable rap act on the bill.

Popular on Variety

The recommissioned pop-punks of Weezer, that hadn’t played a major L.A.-area show in a couple of years, turned in one of the strongest sets of the day, starting with the piercing “My Name Is Jonah.” Old-school L.A. veterans TSOL were also impressive.

Papa Roach, whose debut album “Infest” (DreamWorks) is currently No. 11, played a passable eight-song set, including hit “Last Resort,” that showed the band is still learning to play for auds bigger than club-sized. Gotham riot grrls the Lunachicks, dressed in military-style fatigue outfits, turned in one of the day’s most musically aggressive perfs.

NOFX singer Fat Mike, clearly feeling the effects of beer and sun, said, “I’m in no condition to play music right now,” then led his band of merry punk pranksters through a charged set including fan fave “Linoleum.”

Green Day, who played at dusk, were the best-received band of the day and treated the kids to a veritable greatest-hits set featuring “Welcome to Paradise,” “Longview” and “When I Come Around.” Another punk trio, MxPx, from Bremerton, Wash., ably closed the show with songs from their new Interscope entry “The Ever Passing Moment.”

Halfpipes for skaters and bikers and jump ramps for trick motorcyclists ringed the perimeter of the site, while booth-bound merchants hawking the usual clothing, food, jewelry and smoking goods occupied the center area of the venue.

Seaside Park, Ventura; 7,500 capacity; $25

Q&a: aaron bruno on new awolnation music, hacrdore side project.

Emily Armstrong (L) and Aaron Bruno (R) in the video for the new AWOLNATION track, 'Jump Sit Stand ... [+] Marhch.'

At the end of March, AWOLNATION, the band masterminded by frontman Aaron Bruno, heralded their return due later this summer, with the gorgeous single “Panoramic View.” Yesterday (May 31), the band unveiled a second new song, “Jump Sit Stand March,” and announced their new album, The Phantom Five.

The single, featuring Dead Sara frontwoman Emily Armstong, starts off almost like a kids’ chant, before morphing into an engaging hybrid of styles reflecting Bruno’s array of musical loves. After all, as he informed me in our conversation, in addition to The Phantom Five , Bruno has a hardcore project, The Barbarians Of California, coming later this year as well.

But first back to “Jump Sit Stand March.” Armstrong explained to me her involvement in the track. “We’ve known each other for a while, going back to 2012 I believe. It was I think when his song (‘Sail’) was big and ‘Weatherman was big. We knew each other from Warped tour, we did a show, I think it was in Europe, the one show they did in London. Since then we talked about how we were fans of each other and we actually worked together once before. We wrote a song or two, nothing ever happened of it,” Armstrong told me.

“Then this actually came out of left field. For some reason, at that time when I was recording, I was doing a lot of collabs. I was working with a lot of people, it was fun. That was one of the things that happened. It was super quick. It was like, ‘Come to the house.’ I was like, ‘Of course, I know exactly where it is.’ So, it was just easy. He’s like, ‘Yeah, we’ve just got to write a verse for this part you’re going to sing.’ We bounced some ideas around and really quickly, but he already kind of had the song there. I was like, ‘This is a sick song. I would love to sing this part.’ So, we went in, did it, sang the song, did some things at the end and it was really easy.”

I also spoke exclusively with Bruno about his two new albums, why he originally thought The Phantom Five might be the end of the AWOLNATION journey, fatherhood, making this his first truly independent album and much more.

NSA Warns iPhone And Android Users To Turn It Off And On Again

‘godzilla minus one’ is coming to netflix this weekend, but there’s a catch, sudden u s dollar collapse fear predicted to trigger a 15 7 trillion etf bitcoin price gold flip as countries go dual currency.

Steve Baltin: I love that you did a track with Emily Armstrong. Incredible singer.

Aaron Bruno\: Yeah, incredible singer and lucky to have her on the song. I created the song probably towards the latter half of the creation of this album The Phantom Five . The second verse, I just didn't want to hear myself again. I was thinking, “Who could I get?” I toyed around with a few other possible features and I landed on Emily. We had done some stuff before. Of course, Dead Sara is a great L.A. band. Even my bass player, Marc[Walloch] has played a few shows with them as well. Then I'm like, “Okay, she is an incredible screamer, for starters, and a great singer.” It's almost like vocally her and I are related in some other parallel world. I was just happy she said yes, and it sounds great.

Baltin: I'm sure it's fun for you because we've talked so much about it over the years. When you get to work with different people, it infuses you with new energy .

Bruno: It does. And it gives you an opportunity to take a break from yourself, which is a nice vacation sonically and vocally. So, it's nice to hear her on there. It's nice to hear anyone that's a good singer sing your ideas. II's a really wonderful experience.

Baltin: T ake me through Phantom Fiv e.

Bruno: It's the fifth AWOLNATION record. When I wrote it, I had this intention of it being the final chapter of this AWOLNATION journey. When I started making the record, it was a little bit of a different time than it is now. People were still freaked out. We were still in the middle of all that, which we don't want to speak of anymore. So, I put my head down and thought, “Okay, for starters, how many bands make great sixth albums or seventh or eighth? Very rarely is that accomplished.” I thought, “Okay, I'll wrap it up after five.” I liked the challenge of that, and it kind of put a different onus on that responsibility. If it's your last at bat, hopefully you at least get on base. I was thinking, “I like that pressure.” Now, the dust is settled and it seems highly unlikely that it'll be the last AWOL record, but I wanted to go into it with that intention. It kind of changed my whole perspective. So, The Phantom Five , the story of these characters, is hopefully explored and figured out through the lyrics and the journey of the album. I've also found, over the years, and we've talked about this before, that if you try to explain too much in an album story, it gets lost and people just want to like the songs. So once people get to know the songs and hopefully love the album, then the story of The Phantom Five as characters will reveal itself. But I don't want to force anyone to care about that story. It'll come later, I hope.

Baltin: One of the most fascinating things for me being at Forbes is what I find among all successful people is they're challenging themselves. There's an internal desire to best yourself because you always want to keep things fresh and exciting and interesting for you.

Bruno: Yeah, absolutely. Again, there was a moment where you and I talked and it was like, "Do people even want to go to shows anymore?" So, I released the last album, and then the world shut down. No one wants to talk about this anymore. I certainly don't want to either, but it was a weird experience to put out this original album that was starting to do well. Fans are excited, we're going to do this big tour, all this stuff. Then boom. So that's when I did the covers album as a placeholder, a palate cleanser, and then I started to get passionate about these new songs. I made a bunch of songs over the years because I had the time to do it. I became more motivated and more inspired when there was no touring. I used it as inspiration to dig into all the different emotions we were all feeling at the time, whether it was fear or hope, trying to lean on hope as much as I could, but it was hard, just as everybody knows. But I had the time to make enough songs that I was able to chisel it down to what feels like a greatest hits album. At the same time, I was able to create this other hardcore metal record under a different name, which is called The Barbarians of California. There are two songs out now. We're just slowly, not trying to bludgeon anyone over the head with this new project, but slowly releasing that almost simultaneously in a completely different way. That's allowed me to get the aggressive side of music out of my system in a way I never could before. I would always pepper that into the AWOLNATION records in a lot of ways, and a lot of our fans appreciate that. There's still an element of heaviness in The Phantom Five certainly. But having this other project, The Barbarians of California, and being able to have fun with it and have zero expectations, zero pressure, because we don't have any fans. Some of the AWOL people have carried over, and I appreciate that, but it's a brand new thing, so there are no expectations. So, it feels like when I started, back in 2008-9. I started creating AWOLNATION. It feels the same way for Barbarians and it's just fun. It's this hardcore thrash punk project with a tinge of metal in there. S o, in a lot of ways, The Phantom Five simultaneously with The Barbarians is kind of a double album. This is the first time I've admitted that, and you and I have a relationship, so I'm just coming out with it. But it gave me a certain freedom to focus on the AWOL songs being, I hesitate to say good, but I'm very focused. I saw Ric Ocasek in the studio right before the Weezer Green Album came out. I was in a different band. We were in some small room mixing something, I saw him in the hallway, and I thought, “I'm going to talk to this guy. He's one of my heroes.” So, I go, "Ric, how's the new Weezer sound? I'm a huge fan of The Cars. Love The Cars. Love the Blue Album .” And, he said, "Sounds like a greatest hits album." That really stuck with me because the Green Album isn't a greatest hits album, but when you listen to it front to end, you can see what he was saying. So that's always stuck with me. So that's kind of how I approached this record. “Could it be the last one? The fifth one. And could it feel like a greatest hits album?” We'll see what people think. But so far, the reaction has been great from the first song. And then the next one comes out shortly with Emily Armstrong.

Baltin: What made this the right time to do this independently?

Bruno: I suppose where I'm at in my life and being the fifth. The covers album I don't count as a real record. It was just an experiment that I did. So, this is the fifth record as far as I see it. I guess I didn't feel that there was anything a major label or any label for that matter could do to help me at this point. I felt like I've gotten to the point where I have the tools and the right team and people around me to push forward without having to ever be told why I shouldn't do something again. That was the whole point of this experiment to begin with. The other thing is I've always found that music lovers like myself don't really care too much about the business side. They just want to hear the music. I try not to dwell too much on that. But the point is it was time to answer your question. It feels fun to take full control.

Baltin: The other thing too is, look, once you've had some success, and just in general, as you get older, you get more confident, you care less what other people think and you're able to enjoy things more. Do you feel like you're in that place where you can appreciate things more?

Bruno: Yeah, no doubt. I've been surprisingly lucky with my career in a lot of ways. Not to discredit all the hard work and everything that went in to getting to this point, but there's a certain kind of freedom in not needing to rely on record sales to make or break my career at this point. With that freedom and the idea of being willing to walk away if I wanted to, I think that gave a certain kind of absolute energy to this album. I feel really grateful. I'm now a parent, so that's obviously a absolutely mind blowing shift in the way I view things and feel in general. Not to get too into that, but everything is for the family now.

Baltin: Boy or girl, how old?

Bruno: Twin boys. They're like 15 months. The timing was really nice because I had most of the album done before I went into this transformation, luckily. Then I was able to like brush up everything and look over and add a couple of songs, subtract a few. It's the greatest experience of my life. All the cliches are true, and I'm just in it.

Steve Baltin
