Better Views from the Water

Lake Tahoe Kayaking

Ask any local and they’ll tell you that the best way to experience the magic of Lake Tahoe is by boat. Lake Tahoe is known for its deep blue, crystal-clear waters, epic alpine views and 300+ sunny days per year making it a world-class kayaking destination. Lake Tahoe’s South Shore has some of the most scenic places to kayak in the United States, bringing people from all over the world to experience its many nooks and crannies by boat. Take your Tahoe adventure in a new direction, step away from the crowds, get on the water, and discover the top places to rent a kayak and explore Lake Tahoe by boat.

Kayaking Lake Tahoe

Where Should You Go Kayaking on Lake Tahoe?

Explore and discover the South Shore of Lake Tahoe by kayak. From Emerald Bay’s clear, shallow waters holding the secrets of Vikingsholm Castle to the white sands and calm waters of Baldwin Beach, you’ll find Awe and then Some in every cove.

See 61-feet deep into some of the clearest freshwater in the world.

Baldwin Beach

lake tahoe kayaking

Known for its half-mile strip of white sandy beach that features gorgeous panoramic views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra Nevada Range, Baldwin Beach welcomes all ages to dive in. Whether you’re looking to casually float along the shoreline or launch from this beach to more adventurous waters, Baldwin Beach offers on-site rentals and access to Emerald Bay in paddling distance.

Emerald Bay

Kayakers looking for a slightly longer paddle with an exciting destination can launch their boats from Baldwin Beach and head Northwest along the shoreline toward Emerald Bay . This glacially-carved inlet is known as the crown jewel of Lake Tahoe. Emerald Bay was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1969, and for good reason. The deep clear blue waters of the bay are unlike any other part of the lake and offer amazing views of the surrounding mountains and waterfalls. Paddle your way into the bay and take a tour of Vikingsholm Castle, holding features reminiscent of 11th-century stone churches in southern Sweden. Emerald Bay also features a small picturesque island called Fannette Island in the middle with a small “Tea House” that can be accessed by a short hike. Be sure to pack and enjoy lunch on one of the many small secluded beaches in the bay!

D.L. Bliss State Park

Located just a few miles north of Emerald Bay lies D.L. Bliss State Park . Kayakers can launch their boats from Lester Beach, but it is important to keep in mind that trailers are not allowed in the day-use parking lots. This state park features Rubicon Point, which quickly drops off to one of the deepest points in the lake at a depth of 1,645 feet. The point also features the highest elevation lighthouse in the United States, which can be viewed from the water and even toured. This part of the lake is largely undeveloped and leaving you to enjoy peace on the water.

Zephyr Cove

Located just 15 minutes from South Lake Tahoe, Zephyr Cove ’s energetic vibe and calm waters make it an excellent spot to rent or launch your boat. Take in the breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains as you paddle along this vibrant and exciting shoreline. Whether you want to play in the bay, paddle south to miles of sandy beaches, or head north and explore Lake Tahoe’s more rugged shoreline, Zephyr Cove has it all.
