Thousands Join Virtual Mosque Tours as Part of The Great Get Together Weekend

Over the weekend, thousands of Britons took part in virtual mosque tours across the UK as part of the Muslim Council of Britain’s Visit My Mosque Day and The Great Get Together. Whilst Visit My Mosque Day is held every year for mosques across Britain to open their doors to the public, this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this took place digitally instead with mosques hosting online interactive sessions.

Visitors were able to register online to “visit” mosques of their choosing, and ask questions to members of the mosques about their facilities, congregation and work in the community, particularly during the pandemic. The tours, hosted over Zoom, Facebook Live and YouTube, were viewed by thousands of people, this being the first time many had ever seen the inside of a mosque.

One of the mosques participating was Cambridge Central Mosque, Europe’s first eco-mosque, which has also delivered more than 1,000 food packages to staff at the local Royal Papworth Hospital during lockdown. In addition, Old Kent Road Mosque in South London, home to London’s oldest Nigerian Muslim community offered insights into the #BlackLivesMatter movement and how the mosque positively impacts on the local community.

Samer Haque, Head of Youth at UKIM Masjid Ibrahim, one of the participating mosques, said:

“Alhumdulillah [praise be to God] we are honoured to be a service to the community working towards all-inclusiveness. We firmly believe in providing a space for our people, those from all backgrounds, special educational needs and the youth. The virtual mosque tour enables us to invite members of our society to our Masjid [mosque], so we can work together holistically to achieve our goal and vision.”

One of the attendees of the tours, Rachel Choo, a PhD student from York, said:

“I signed up for my first tour by Finsbury Park Mosque not knowing what to expect and was completely blown away. There was a wide selection of activities – videos that show what they have been doing over the past few years as well as in the past few months, short speeches from members of the community as well as timely discussion of racism around us. I was especially heartened to see that women also hold prominent roles in the mosque.”

Notes to Editors:

#VisitMyMosque Day is a national initiative where mosques across the UK hold open days annually to welcome in their neighbours of all faiths and none. Further information is available at www.visitmymosque.org

This year due to lockdown, mosques instead offered virtual tours between Friday 19 and Sunday 21 June, sharing with visitors how they have been supporting their local communities during lockdown and their hopes for a post-lockdown future.

#VisitMyMosque is facilitated by the Muslim Council of Britain, the country’s largest and most-diverse Muslim umbrella body with over 500 affiliated mosques, educational and charitable associations.

This year’s initiative was supported by British Muslim-led charities Penny Appeal, Euro Quality Foundation and the Aziz Foundation, and was also timed to take place during the same weekend as The Great Get Together campaign, inspired by the late MP Jo Cox.

UK Mosques Offer Virtual Tours during Lockdown

For five consecutive years, British Muslims have organized the annual Visit My Mosque Day event across the UK, taking huge steps to bring British community closer to Muslims and demystify myths about Islam.

This year, despite the lockdown, #VisitMyMosque is going virtual with a series of live virtual tours.

“This year, rather than communities visiting their local mosques, mosques have been visiting their local communities, through food bank collections, cooking hot meals, delivering free PPE and more,” Harun Khan, MCB Secretary General said in a statement online.

“The role that faith communities have played in supporting the most vulnerable in society during the past three months of the coronavirus lockdown has been formidable.

“As the full impact of the lockdown begins to be felt, mosques and Muslim communities stand ready to continue playing their part in post-lockdown Britain.”

This year’s virtual tour program is in collaboration with The Great Get Together , inspired by the late MP Jo Cox, which is taking place during the same weekend.

Those interested will register for a 60-90 minute live virtual mosque tour from June 19-21.

Visit my mosque 2019: aboutislam talks to mcb coordinator.

Mosques in the UK have been holding open days for their local communities for decades.

At the national initiative, #VisitMyMosque was first conceived in February 2015 with about 20 mosques taking part.

Held under the auspices of Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), the initiative grew to over 250 mosques last year. Now, MPs and other senior politicians take parts too, including the PM, Leader of the Opposition, and the Mayor of London.

Not only in the United Kingdom .

Muslims across the world usually open mosque doors to guests to enable them to have a glimpse of Islam.

For example, a number of countries host Visit My Mosque Day annually, including Australia, , Norway, and France.

Researching places of worship near you

A simple project for your students to take on is to use the Internet to research places of worship. They can use Google Maps or platforms like What’s Near Me to find spiritual sites in their local area or other places. Some places have virtual tours within Google Maps, so look out for these.

Ask them to try Googling ‘virtual tours’ of a specific place of worship, for example a church, mosque, mandir, gurdwara, synagogue, temple or sacred space (eg a stone circle).  Some places of worship have their own website with photographs of the building and special features, which can give a good impression of what it is like inside and the atmosphere that exists within the building or site.

There are also websites with search engines for a specific place of worship (see below). Many places of worship also offer virtual opportunities to attend worship.

Wales becomes first UK nation to join metaverse

Tourism body Visit Wales hopes the new initiative will attract those visiting the "virtual Wales" to also visit the country in the real world in future.

Wales has become the first UK nation to join the metaverse.

The launch of Wales in the metaverse hopes to give virtual visitors from all over the world the chance to see what the country has to offer.

Tourism body Visit Wales has created the immersive experience with the aim of platforming some of Wales's experiences and attractions.

Around 600 million people visit the metaverse each year, across a number of platforms.

The Welsh metaverse is being hosted on platform Spatial.

Organisers say they believe Wales is also the first European nation to use this approach to market itself as a tourism destination.

The announcement comes after a report by a committee of MPs published last July found Wales "lacked a coherent brand" to attract overseas visitors.

Presenter of Doctor Who Unleashed and former gaming journalist Steffan Powell attended the launch.

He said the metaverse experience would give potential visitors to Wales "a flavour of all the exciting things you can see and do on a holiday in Wales".

The Welsh government's tourism minister, Hannah Blythyn, said the metaverse had been created "to reach new audiences".

"By showcasing some of the best Wales has to offer visitors in this incredibly innovative way, we're putting Wales in an online sphere where millions of people already meet every day," she added.

Visitors to the virtual Wales can take on quests including building an interactive itinerary which includes real-life Wales-based activities.

It's a world created in partnership with a firm based in Swansea - iCreate.

"Wales punches above its weight when it comes to innovation and technology," said iCreate founder Dawn Lyle.

"We're excited to be a part of this initiative, with the virtual space opening up new worlds of possibility to reach new audiences."

The Wales metaverse has now opened to the public and can be entered on smartphones, tablets, laptops, computers and via Meta Quest headsets.

The 2024 Giro d'Italia racers have officially passed the halfway point of the iconic course, and the competition is heating up. We'll show you everything you need to know about where to watch Giro d'Italia live streams, including free options that will also work for this summer's Tour de France.

The Giro d'Italia spans the length of Italy and is the first of the three famous Grand Tour races that define the spring and summer cycling season. It began on May 4 and will run until May 26. The Tour de France picks up in July, followed by the Vuelta a España in August. The Italian race is broken up into 21 long, grueling stages, with a particularly intense stretch through the Alps. Last year's victor, Primož Roglič, is sitting out this year's race to train for the Tour de France, so a new champion will emerge on May 26.

The race is held almost every day, except a few Mondays, so it's a busy viewing schedule for fans. If you're in the US, the races start pretty early. Luckily, the American streaming option we've highlighted saves the races on-demand, so you can always watch them later if you'd rather sleep in. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about live streaming the 2024 Giro d'Italia.
