“Better days are coming – they are called Saturday and Sunday!” So said rail firm LNER in a social media post on Friday morning.
In fact, weekend services on the main train operator on the East Coast main line will be far worse than usual – even though a planned train drivers’ strike has been called off .
The planned series of 11 successive weekend strikes was abandoned by the train drivers’ union, Aslef , on Thursday evening.
The union’s general secretary, Mick Whelan, said: “We are pleased to have finally resolved this long-standing issue with LNER of abuse of our agreements. We look forward to normal working resuming.”
But because of the way that train drivers’ rosters are organised, there is no prospect of reinstating the vast majority of cancelled trains on 31 August and 1 September.
LNER said: “Due to the late-notice cancellation of the strike action, a significantly reduced timetable will still be operating.”
A skeleton schedule will run on the main London-York-Newcastle-Edinburgh route with departures roughly between 8am and 5pm.
At 8.30am on Friday, only one seat is shown as available on any direct LNER train from Edinburgh to London through the weekend. The single seat, priced at £119, is on the 4.30pm train on Saturday which arrives at King’s Cross in the English capital five hours later.
The state-run rail firm said: “Where possible we will attempt to run a small number of additional trains over the weekend.”
Passengers who want to travel on LNER trains between Edinburgh and London are free to do so. But because of the way the rail firm retails its seats they will need to buy a Super Off Peak ticket from Haymarket station , a mile from the main Edinburgh Waverley hub, and hope to find a seat on board. The fare is £91.20.
The planned strikes were unconnected with the long-running pay dispute that was settled earlier this month. Aslef accused LNER of operating “inappropriately”, citing:
- Paying driver managers a premium to drive trains.
- Not recruiting enough drivers to run a full service.
- Trying to push drivers to work outside of agreed rostering systems.
Mr Whelan had accused LNER of “boorish behaviour and bullying tactics”.
An LNER spokesperson said: “After constructive talks with Aslef, we are pleased that strikes planned to commence from this Saturday 31 August have now been called off.
“We will be looking to strengthen the timetable published for this weekend and advise customers to check for the latest information in advance of their journey.”
As with a strike by members of the RMT that was called off at short notice in 2022 , it appears that most staff will be paid as normal even though there is no work for them to do.

Motorway closes in both directions after serious crash on the M49
Share this with
The Friday rush hour is off to a difficult start after a crash on the M49 has closed the motorway in both directions near Bristol.
The M49 shut for traffic after a serious crash between M5 junction 18 Avonmouth Docks and M4 J22 Severn Road Bridge at rush hour. Footage appears to show an overturned vehicle.
It comes after a lorry burst into flames on the A282 near Dartford Crossing, forcing the firefighters to empty the load onto the carriageway, followed by another major crash on the M25 in Hertfordshire.

Long delays after major crash closes M49
The M49 outside Bristol near the Severn Bridge has shut in both directions after a serious collision.
The #M49 in #Gloucestershire remains closed in both directions between #M5 J18 #Avonmouth Docks and #M4 J22 #Severn Road Bridge due to a serious collision. We have approached the emergency services for a comment.
Serious crash on the M25 in Hertfordshire
Traffic ground to a halt on the M25 between J16 Uxbridge and J17 Rickmansworth after a serious crash.
While all lanes have now reopened, congestion and tailbacks are building in the area in both directions.
National Highways warned previously of up to 90-minute delay.
All lanes reopen after lorry fire near Dartford
All lanes have now reopened after the lorry fire which forced the firefighters to empty its load onto the carriageway.
Here is the latest from National Highways.
All lanes have re-opened on the #A282 northbound between J2 and J1B in #Kent on the approach to the #DartfordCrossing following a vehicle fire. Thank you for your patience, please have a safe onward journey. pic.twitter.com/zAuktVbQv0 — National Highways: South-East (@HighwaysSEAST) August 30, 2024
Rotherhithe Tunnel closure after crash
The Rotherhithe Tunnel A101 in east London has closed in both directions after a crash shortly before 3pm.
Traffic has ground to a halt on approach to the tunnel in both directions, the latest TfL alert says.
The crash happened on the Tunnel Approach A101 at the junction of A13 Commercial Road in Limehouse.
Drivers were told to use other routes.
Moorgate station has reopened
Following an earlier fire alert at Moorgate, the station has fully reopened.
However Great Northern Rail are warning that there will still be some cancellations and delays while services return to normal.
The latest on the M25 lane closures
2 lanes (of 4) are closed on the #A282 northbound between J2 and J1B in #Kent on the approach to the #DartfordCrossing . @kentfirerescue have decided to empty the load onto the carrigeway to tackle the blaze. The lane closures are likely to be in place for some time. pic.twitter.com/3Q6Oa44Z6n — National Highways: South-East (@HighwaysSEAST) August 30, 2024
Fire alarm forces Moorgate station to evacuate
All lines have been closed following the station evacuation, affecting all Great Northern services to and from Moorgate.
Services will be cancelled, altered or diverted away from the area.
Where services are diverted, this will affect those which usually run towards Moorgate. After Finsbury Park, diverted trains will serve Kings Cross only.
Trains which usually start from Moorgate may start from Finsbury Park instead.
Because of these changes, there will be no Great Northern services at Old Street, Essex Road, Highbury & Islington or Drayton Park.
Drivers on the M25 once again seeing delays
As today is a day with ‘day’ in it, the M25 is experiencing delays.
There’s congestion on the motorway anti-clockwise between J3 (M20 J1/Swanley), traffic cameras show .
While highway officials haven’t made an official alert warning about congestion, RAC is showing delays Kent-way too due to construction works and a lane being closed.
‘Delays of nine minutes on M25 anticlockwise between J26 A121 Honey Lane (Waltham Abbey) and J24 A111 Stagg Hill (Potters Bar). Average speed 20mph,’ it says.
Getting to Heathrow is a little easier now
Things are looking up when it comes to getting to Heathrow.
TfL is reporting that service on the Elizabeth line – a major way to get to the west London airport – is running smoothly.
There are ‘no disruptions’ either on the Heathrow Express .
However National Rail is warning that there is still some residual disruption.
M5 clogged with congestion
Traffic is being reported from drivers along the M5, which stretches from the Midlands to the South West.
The motorway was already congested this morning around Bristol, with traffic backing up by about three miles.
Congestion was reported earlier on the M5 southbound J2 (Dudley/Oldbury) and J3 (Quinton) as well as northbound within J27 (Halberton/Culmstock) by the monitoring service Motorway Cameras .

Southeastern lines have reopened after signal fault at Lenham
The line was blocked from 10.10am until about 11am so staff could carry out repairs.
This work has now been completed and the signalling problem has been fixed.
Trains can now stop at Lenham as scheduled, but it’s been warned that trains towards London via Maidstone East could still be cancelled or revised while service recovers.
No trains between London Bridge and Charing Cross for 90 minutes
There’s another signalling system fault this morning, this time between London Bridge and Charing Cross, which is blocking all lines while repairs take place.
It’s affecting Southeastern Services from Charing Cross to Dover Priory/Ashford International/Hastings/Tunbridge Wells/Maidstone East/Faversham/Gravesend/Dartford/Sevenoaks/Hayes.
Services will be unable to serve Waterloo East or Charing Cross, with trains being diverted into Cannon Street or Victoria, or terminated and restarted at London Bridge.
From 11am for around 45 minutes the line between London Bridge and Charing Cross will be blocked to allow Network Rail to carry out this repair work.
Two incidents on the M25 causing issues
Overall the M25 has been behaving itself fairly well today, but there are a couple of incidents drivers should be aware of.
- There’s one lane closed on the anticlockwise carriageway at junction 10 for the A3 after an accident
- There’s a broken down vehicle on the junction 3 exit slip road for the M20

Crew shortages lead to cancellations between Euston and St Albans Abbey
Disruption is expected between 1.45-3.15pm, with four services already cancelled and the possibility of more cancellations.
It’s affecting trains between London Euston or Watford Junction and St Albans Abbey.
The following trains have already been cancelled:
- 13:45 Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey
- 14:08 St Albans Abbey to Watford Junction
- 14:45 Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey
- 15:08 St Albans Abbey to Watford Junction
Disruption to Southeastern services between Ashford International and London
A signal fault at Lenham has blocked the line towards London in Kent.
Routes between Ashford International and Maidstone East/London Victoria/London Charing Cross, and between Ramsgate/Minster and London Victoria are being disrupted.
A Southeastern spokesperson explained: ‘During overnight inspections, a fault with the signalling system has been discovered at Lenham, which means trains towards London cannot call at the station.
‘Trains towards London via Maidstone East will not call at Lenham station.
‘Services from Ashford International can use an alternative section of track to travel towards Maidstone East.
‘Services towards Ashford are unaffected.’
Reduced service between Bedford and Bletchley this afternoon
There’s a shortage of London Northwestern Railway train crew which will impact services between Bedford and Bletchley between 3.45pm until around 10.30pm.
So far, the services cancelled include:
- 15:47 Bedford to Bletchley
- 17:45 Bletchley to Bedford
- 18:47 Bedford to Bletchley
- 20:45 Bletchley to Bedford
- 21:47 Bedford to Bletchley
Lines reopen after trespasser at Shepherds Bush
National Rail warns that services could still be cancelled or delayed by up to half an hour while things return to normal now that the trespass incident has been dealt with.
The delay in switching the power back on after the trespasser was removed from the track was caused by a fault in the system allowing the power to be reinstated.
Power supply to the electric third rail had to be turned off while the trespasser was still on the line.
Man fighting for his life after ‘road rage’ incident in Bexleyheath
The incident happened at around 5.25am last Tuesday, August 20 and a man was found with a head injury at traffic lights on Erith Road.
He’s still in critical condition in hospital and his family has been informed.
Met officers arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm on the same day, and he’s been bailed pending further enquiries.
Police are now appealing for anyone who saw the assault or has dashcam footage.
Detective Constable Katie McGinn said: ‘We believe that the victim sustained his injuries following a traffic incident, and subsequent altercation, involving a man from another vehicle.
‘If you saw any part of this sequence of events, or if you have footage, please do get in touch.’
Southern customer advice after trespasser at Shepherds Bush
Even though the trespasser has now been removed, Southern says the railway hasn’t been able to reopen as soon as expected.
A spokesperson said: ‘This means there will be a number of service changes and cancellations on the Southern route between East Croydon, Clapham Junction and Watford Junction.
‘You will need to use an alternative route. We’d advise allowing at least an extra 30-45 minutes of travel time.’
Tickets will be accepted on the following alternative routes at no extra cost:
- London Underground via any reasonable route
- London Buses between Clapham Junction and Watford Junction
- Southern between Clapham Junction and London Victoria
- London Northwestern Railway services between London Euston, Harrow & Wealdstone and Watford Junction
- London Euston, Harrow & Wealdstone and Watford Junction
- Watford Junction and St Albans Abbey
- Thameslink services between St Albans City, London St Pancras International, London Blackfriars and East Croydon
- London Overground services between London Euston, Willesden Junction, Wembley Central, Harrow & Wealdstone and Watford Junction

Eurostar delays to and from London after train hits tractor-trailer at crossing
Eurostar services were disrupted on Tuesday after a train collided with a tractor trailer on a level crossing.
Video showed the moment the high-speed train - which is not run by Eurostar - hit the trailer, which appeared to have broken down on a railway crossing between Lille in France and Brussels.
Belgian news outlet VRT News reported two train passengers were injured.
Eurostar passengers travelling to and from London have been urged not to travel to avoid the chaos.
Eurostar said that part of the track between Lille and Brussels was shut following the crash, leaving “severe” delays and cancellations across its network.
It later said the track had opened again, and “minor” delays were persisting.
A spokesperson said: “Due to an external incident on the Belgian network, Eurostar trains between London and Brussels/Amsterdam have experienced some disruption today with delays.
“There were some cancellations. The line has been reopened and our traffic is resuming with only small delays, no more cancellations.
“Eurostar asked people who are travelling the London route and able to reschedule their journey to travel another day, with an exchange or cancellation free of charge. Passengers have been informed.
“Trains between Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels and Cologne are not impacted.”
Passengers shared photos of huge crowds at Brussels station amid the disruption, where the scene was described as “chaos”, and Eurostar was accused of “dire” communication.
Harriet Yudkin wrote on X: “This is appalling - complete lack of organisation or clear communication. Where are your staff? Security staff at Brussels station are having to try and placate the crowd of tired, frustrated and angry passengers who are having to stand for hours without any information.”
Bruce Greig described Brussels as “a complete omnishambles”, adding there was “zero organisation of passengers and even less communication”.
The Eurostar website showed at least four trains from Brussels to London St Pancras had been cancelled on Wednesday, while others had been delayed by as long as four hours.

Honkai: Star Rail Introduces Character Rappa
Honkai: star rail banner tier list, 10 most overpowered honkai: star rail characters according to lore, key takeaways.
- Honkai: Star Rail introduces the Garden of Plenty event for double ascension material rewards.
- Golden and Crimson Calyxes provide essential ascension materials for character progression.
- The Garden of Plenty event offers opportunities to collect materials for new character reruns in upcoming versions.
Honkai: Star Rai l has announced a new event, Garden of Plenty, which offers players additional upgrade materials. Honkai: Star Rail allows players to farm ascension materials by collecting flower-shaped nodes, Golden and Crimson Calyxes, spread across the game's world. These embedded nodes require Trailblazers to complete combat gauntlets to obtain rewards.
Golden and Crimson Calyxes are a mechanism that contributes to the character's progression. They provide various ascension materials for Honkai: Star Rail 's Light Cones , units, and traces. As players increase their Trailblazer level, Golden and Crimson Calyxes offer harder challenges. It's worth noting that players may run out of energy while collecting nodes because they consume 10 Trailblaze Power.
Honkai: Star Rail officially reveals the long-rumored character Rappa and confirms her rarity, indicating she will debut in Version 2.6.
Honkai: Star Rail has revealed a new double reward event, Garden of Plenty , which allows players to obtain additional ascension materials. In the event, Trailblazers will get double the amount of ascension material when they beat Golden and Crimson Calyx challenges. However, the number of daily double-reward opportunities will be limited. Honkai: Star Rail players must finish the Calyx: Bud of Memories mission to take part in the Garden of Plenty.
Honkai: Star Rail's New Double Reward Event Starts Today
- Name: Garden of Plenty
- Time: August 30–October 6
- Requirement: Finish the Calyx: Bud of Memories mission.
This time-limited event is an opportunity for players to obtain some ascension materials, such as Flower of Eternity and Obsidian of Obsession, which can be used to level up traces of Honkai: Star Rail 's Natasha , Luka, and Guinaifen. For the unaware, these characters will receive their reruns in version 2.5. Based on the schedule, Luka will appear in the first phase of version 2.5, while Natasha and Guinaifen will arrive in the second phase.
Some ascension materials players can obtain from Golden and Crimson Clayxes include Exquisite Colored Draft, Countertemporal Shot, Divine Amber, Moon Madness Fang, Heavenly Melody, Celestial Section, and Refined Aether.
Honkai: Star Rail introduces several time-limited events in every version, allowing players to clear combat stages and complete tasks to obtain bountiful rewards. Some events give Trailblazers free copies of characters, while others offer Light Cones, Stellar Jades, and upgrade materials. In Honkai: Star Rail , these festivities usually remain available for several weeks.
Speaking of temporary events, a recent leak has suggested Honkai: Star Rail 's version 2.5 will add the Gift of Odyssey, which gives players various free rewards. According to early leaks, it will provide Stellar Jades, Fuel, and Tears of Dreams. In addition to the Gift of Odyssey, version 2.5 will reportedly introduce a small event, during which Honkai: Star Rail 's Silver Wolf will make an appearance.
