The essence of volunteerism stems from the very core of human kindness. It reminds us that within each of us lies the power to foster change, support growth, and provide comfort to those in need. For the Calgary Dream Centre , volunteers allow us to continue our mission of helping vulnerable individuals on their journey towards recovery and personal stability.

Why Should I Volunteer My Time?

Why is volunteering so important? It’s more than just lending a hand; it’s about giving a piece of your heart. It’s about making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals who yearn for understanding and a chance to rewrite their stories.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of many organizations in the city, providing essential support that aids in delivering life-changing services. When you volunteer, you’re doing more than just filling a role—you’re igniting hope.

In addition, volunteering fosters a 2-way street of growth and learning. Volunteers acquire new skills, expand their social networks, and often experience a profound sense of fulfillment. While they contribute to the lives of others, they also gain a deeper appreciation for the diversity and complexity within their own city.

Why We Need Volunteers

The Calgary Dream Centre strives to create personal and systemic change, but we can’t do it without the participation of the community.

Volunteers offer a diverse range of skills and insights that enrich an organization’s programs and reach. By engaging more hands, the Calgary Dream Centre can extend our outreach and deepen the impact of our services, enabling holistic support structures for those embarking on a fresh start.

The Calgary Dream Centre provides programs that support:

Engagement in these wider activities reflects the spirit of the Calgary Dream Centre by highlighting a collective desire to enhance our surroundings and support one another. It’s a reminder that every action, no matter the setting, contributes to the growth and vitality of Calgary as a whole.

Giving Back & Moving Forward

Meaningful volunteering is a shared journey—it brings together volunteers and beneficiaries in a mutual narrative of progress.

Volunteering is more than an act of charity; it’s a commitment to the well-being of our larger human family. It represents the best of what we can do together, and at the Calgary Dream Centre, the opportunities to be part of this are both abundant and profoundly rewarding.

Through volunteerism, you play a critical role in crafting a narrative of hope and empowerment for the most vulnerable people in our society.

YOUTH VOLUNTEER CORPS OF CALGARY

About the program.

tourism calgary volunteer

Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) began in 1987 as a summer service program for Kansas City youth. Today, YVC is a network of affiliated organizations across the U.S. and Canada running that same program. Mission: We engage youth in team-based service experiences that build life and work skills while inspiring a lifetime ethic of service. Vision: Communities defined by compassion, selflessness, and respect for others.

Engage youth in service projects that are challenging, rewarding and educational.

Serve the needs of the community and its residents.

Cultivate a greater understanding and appreciation for diversity.

Promote a lifetime ethic of service in youth.

Youth Central’s YVC program started in 1993, and has grown to be one of YVC’s largest affiliate. Youth Central collaborates with over 100 organizations in Calgary to create hundreds of youth-approved service opportunities year-round for youth volunteers. The focus of each volunteer opportunity is to create meaningful, educational and engaging projects that address a wide variety of community needs while providing thoughtful leadership opportunities. The YVC Steering Committee is a group of like-minded youth who work on initiatives to improve the YVC program. This is an opportunity to become more involved in the YVC program through event planning, project improvements, and getting to know other youth volunteers. The Steering Committee runs from October- June of each year.

HOW IT WORKS

YVC is open to any youth in Calgary between the ages of 12-18. Once a month, Youth Central posts carefully reviewed volunteer opportunities on our project database. YVC registered volunteers can continuously view the database to search and sign up for opportunities that interest them. A Youth Central staff member (Team Leader) will connect with signed up youth volunteers approximately one week before the event to communicate important information. On the day of the volunteer opportunity, the Team Leader will run an ice-breaker activity, guide the youth in their volunteer role, and facilitate a reflection at the end. Your volunteer hours will also be recorded within 48 hours of your volunteer project on your account, so you’ll be able to keep track of your completed hours.

With the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Calgary 2024 just a little more than two weeks away, nearly 1,000 volunteers gathered for a pre-game rally on Sunday.

The Special Olympics will draw athletes and volunteers from across Canada to Calgary for the games at the end of this month.

Tourism Calgary says it’s one of the largest volunteer driven events the city has had since the 1988 Winter Olympics.

"The outreach from the community and the excitement for the event has been fantastic and it hasn't been a hard sell," said Carson Ackroyd of Tourism Calgary. "People really want to step up and make this experience for the athletes across Canada. We actually think that the volunteers are going to have an equally amazing experience by becoming volunteers as the athletes will experiencing the games."

Monday night on CTV News at Six we will introduce you to members of the Special Olympics Alberta bowling team as they prepare for the games.

The Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Calgary 2024 begin in Calgary February 27.

About 1,500 volunteers are expected to take part.
