Profiles Deutschland Tour 2022

The Deutschland Tour (24-28th August) is the final chapter of the German high-level calendar which included the European Championships and the BEMER Cyclassics this year. The five-day stage-race will have a prologue and four hilly and mountainous days, which will see some exciting racing, and plenty riders looking to prepare the World championships and late-season World Tour calendar.

The race starts with a short 2.5-kilometer long prologue in the town of Weimar which will set the early lead of the race. Stage one will see the peloton go on it's first hilly stage with a finale in Meiningen, which includes a sequence of climbs, the final of which having 2.5 kilometers at 6.2% with bonifications available at the top with just under 20 kilometers.

Final startlist Deutschland Tour with Bernal, Ganna, Jakobsen, Ewan, Bilbao and Bardet

Stage two sees the ascents closer to the finish, with a combination of several short but explosive climbs towards the end. Summits with 22.5, 13 and 5 kilometers to go, which include an intermediate sprint and a bonified sprint aswell will set the race alight. Stage three will be the queen stage, with the hills of the previous days having little influence in comparison to the summit finish at Schauinsland. The day is relatively calmer in it's majority, but the end gets tough, and the summit finish alone will see 11.7 kilometers at 6.5%, a true test for the climbers and those looking to succeed in the GC.

The final day will lead the riders into Stuttgart, an equally hard day with barely a flat meter in it's first half. However the urban inside the German city won't be any easier, with three ascents of the Herdweg (1.3Km; 7.8%) finishing with 27, 16.5 and 6.5 kilometers to go which will then wrap up the race.

How to watch the Tour de France live stream 2024

All the information you need in order to tune into the biggest race of the year

The final podium of the 2023 Tour de France on the Champs-Elysées in Paris

The wait is nearly over for the biggest bike race of the year, the Tour de France 2024 . Like us, you'll probably be wanting to tune in and watch, so we've put together a comprehensive guide to exactly how you can watch everything from live coverage to highlights of this iconic Grand Tour.

It should be an exciting battle for overall victory, with four potential winners all vying for the maillot jaune. Reigning champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike), Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) and Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) are the men most likely, although newly-anointed Giro d'Italia champion Pogačar is the only rider to have come through the early season unscathed. The other three have missed training time after tangling with each other in the same crash in Itzulia Basque Country in April.

Vingegaard was the worst affected , and in early June there was still a question mark over whether he would definitely be at the Tour de France.

There are plenty of sprinting opportunities scattered throughout the race. Last year's green jersey Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) will be the man to beat, pushed hard others including Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Fabio Jakobsen (dsm-firmenich-PostNL). Many eyes will also be on Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), who returns for his last Tour de France in the hope of finally beating the all-time 35-stage-win record that he is currently tied on with Eddy Merckx.

The final stage sees the race make way for the Paris Olympic Games and finish outside the capital for the first time in history, with a time trial from Monaco to Nice.

When is the Tour de France?

The Tour de France will begin in Florence on June 29, and finish three weeks later on July 21 in Nice. Individual stages will be broadcast in full on Discovery+ .

After cutting his teeth on local and national newspapers, James began at Cycling Weekly as a sub-editor in 2000 when the current office was literally all fields.

Eventually becoming chief sub-editor, in 2016 he switched to the job of full-time writer, and covers news, racing and features.

A lifelong cyclist and cycling fan, James's racing days (and most of his fitness) are now behind him. But he still rides regularly, both on the road and on the gravelly stuff.

Tour of Norway: Axel Laurance tops Ethan Hayter to win stage 2

Alpecin-Deceuninck rider takes race lead off Thibau Nys

Axel Laurance

How it unfolded

Axel Laurance (Alpecin-Deceuninck) secured the stage 2 victory at the Tour of Norway, sprinting over the line from a front group that emerged on the final climb to Gullingen.

Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) was part of a chase group that managed to close the gap to the front group in the final, and he finished in second place, ahead of runner-up Bart Lemmen (Visma-Lease a Bike).

Laurance moved into the overall race lead as stage 1 winner, and overnight leader Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek) struggled to hold the pace on the final ascent. Laurance now leads the race by 12 seconds over Lemmen and 13 seconds ahead of Ådne Holter (Uno-X Mobility).

The second stage at the Tour of Norway was a 204.8km race that started in Odda and finished on the summit in Gullingen.

The breakaway emerged after the first 40km of racing that included Sean Flynn (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), Filip Řeha (ATT Investments), Hugo Scala Jr (Project Echelon Racing), and Anton Stensby (Team Coop-Repsol).

The quartet extended their lead to over three minutes at the halfway mark of the race, which included the Hogganvikbakken climb and the roads to Gullingen.

Lidl-Trek set the pace from behind the peloton for their overall race leader, Thibau Nys. ATT Investments also contributed to the efforts to keep the breakaway in check.

Wout Van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) was involved in a crash in the peloton with 45km to go, but the Belgian was quickly back on his bike and in the race a kilometre later.

Up in the breakaway, Scala was distanced from the move with 37km out, leaving Stensby, Řeha and Flynn to continue forward as the gap fell to two minutes.

Stensby surged into the base for the final ascent, distancing Řeha and Flynn and holding onto a slim 20 seconds on the chasing field, but he, too, was caught on the lower slopes.

Nys showed signs of struggle on the upper slopes of the climb as a small group of riders surged ahead. Axel Laurance (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Ben Zwiehoff (Bora-hansgrohe), Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek), Bart Lemmen (Visma-Lease a Bike), Carl Fredrik Hagen (Q36.5 Pro Cycling), Marco Brenner (Tudor Pro Cycling) and Ådne Holter (Uno-X Mobility).

Inside the final kilometre, the front group swelled to 11 riders, including Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers).

Laurance started his sprint from the front group and claimed the win, narrowly holding off the rest of the field, with Hayter finishing in second place and Lemmen holding on for third.
