The Best Galápagos Island Cruises

A cruise is one of the best ways to see all that this remote Ecuadorian archipelago has to offer.

expedition cruise to galapagos

There's no better way to cover ground on your trip to the Galápagos Islands than to sail on a multiday cruise.

Galápagos National Park regulates the number and type of tourist boats that are allowed to operate in the famously biodiverse area. This helps with overcrowding, conserving the environment, and minimizing stress on the amazing wildlife of the Galápagos. Many tourist boats in the area offer five- to seven-day all-inclusive itineraries that are strictly monitored by the national park officials. There are also cruises operating illegally, so you have to take care when choosing a tour.

To help you find a cruise fit for your wildest dreams, we've rounded up 14 of the best options, whether you prefer a small ship or bigger vessel, an action-packed itinerary or a casual drift around this remote archipelago in the Pacific.

Small Galápagos Cruises

Most of the cruise ships in the Galápagos Islands carry fewer than 20 passengers. These vessels, typically motor yachts, can't provide some of the luxurious amenities available on larger ships, but they do ensure personalized service, a more intimate experience, and quicker trips on and off the boat.

Quasar Grace

The 18-passenger Grace was once owned by Grace Kelly. She and Prince Rainier spent part of their honeymoon on the motor yacht, and now you can sleep in their bedroom, the Grace Kelly Suite, which is one of nine rooms aboard. The ship sails three routes, taking eight to 15 days, and guests get plenty of snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, and panga rides along the way.

Ecoventura Letty

The Letty is one of the best full-service motor yachts in the Galápagos for value. This 20-passenger boat is a solid option with great service and comfortable accommodations. A trip on the Letty promises a 10 guest-per-guide ratio, as well as dinner with the captain. You get a choice between two seven-day itineraries, each including opportunities to snorkel, hike, and learn about the local wildlife from knowledgeable guides.

Ecoventura Origin

The 20-passenger Origin is like a floating boutique hotel. All 10 cabins are on the same deck, there’s an open-bar policy, and Wi-Fi is available on board. A unique hull design means this ship is also one of the most fuel-efficient in the Galápagos. Like the Letty , Ecoventura's Origin sails two routes around the archipelago, each lasting eight days and providing plenty of chances to get up close to nature.

Medium Galápagos Ships

If you're stuck between whether to book your cruise on a small ship or a large vessel — both have their advantages — one of these medium-sized boats accommodating 20 to 50 passengers could be the best of both worlds. You'll enjoy more space, a larger group to mingle with, and sometimes a wider variety of activities and services to accommodate more people.

Quasar Evolution

The 32-passenger Evolution was designed by Adriana Hoyos, a furniture and interior designer renowned for her work on luxury hotels across the Americas. Its cabins have a contemporary boutique-hotel aesthetic. There are indoor and outdoor lounges, a bar, and a library. Passengers can choose between three itineraries, ranging from eight to 15 days and taking different routes around the Galápagos.

Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Islander II

All cabins on the 48-passenger National Geographic Islander II have windows, and some even have private patios. The ship offers deck hammocks, Wi-Fi, and food made with ingredients sourced from farms in the Galápagos whenever possible. Itineraries range from seven to 12 days and include cultural experiences in addition to wildlife viewing and water sports.

Large Galápagos Ships

Galápagos National Park officials have set a maximum of 100 passengers per vessel, so these are some of the largest ships in the archipelago. Travelers may opt for a larger-capacity cruise ship for more space (such as bigger hallways and staircases for easier movement around the ship) and increased services like an onboard doctor. The downside of traveling on a large ship is the time it can take to complete transfers by zodiac from the boat to the islands. Also, some areas of the Galápagos may be off limits to larger ships.

Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Endeavour II

The 96-passenger National Geographic Endeavour II has Wi-Fi, a doctor, SUP gear, a clear-bottom zodiac, a free digital photo kiosk with iMacs, and a spa. Like the Islander II, food brought from the mainland is carefully prepared and packaged to prevent the introduction of invasive species to the Galápagos Islands.

Celebrity Flora

The 100-passenger Celebrity Flora features all of the design elements, amenities, and services of its sibling ships and then some. It has two 1,288-square-foot penthouse suites (the largest in the Galápagos), naturalist-guided stargazing sessions, and outdoor cabanas that you can reserve for a unique glamping experience.

Silversea Silver Origin

The 100-passenger Silver Origin is an all-suite ship with accommodations up to 1,722 square feet, some with in-room espresso machines and mini-bars, private verandas, and butler service. Tips are included in the price. The ship also has a fitness center, a spa, a communal fire pit, and two restaurants. There are more than 100 cruise options, some lasting as long as 18 days.

Galápagos Catamarans

These small boats have a unique hull design, like the dual parallel runners of a sled, that many believe makes catamarans more stable in the water.

Celebrity Xploration

The 16-passenger Celebrity Xploration is arguably the most luxurious catamaran in the Galápagos. Its eight suites and junior suites feature extras like binoculars, personal refrigerators, a pillow menu, and room service. The catamaran cruises two routes, a northern route and a southern route, both lasting seven nights.

Anahi Yacht Catamaran

The Anahi has eight rooms accommodating up to 16 passengers, including two spacious suites. Travelers can expect traditional yacht design details, like polished wooden floors and portrait windows. There are multiple itineraries to choose from, each stopping off at different islands and exploring different parts of the Galápagos. The cruises range in duration from four to 15 days.

Royal Galapagos Cormorant II

The Cormorant II can carry 16 passengers in nine cabins, all with private balconies. Some of the suites even come with walk-in closets and their own Jacuzzi tubs. Travelers can opt for a four- to eight-day cruise with inclusive excursions such as snorkeling, kayaking, and glass-bottom boat tours.

Live-aboard Dive Boats

If you’re a certified scuba diver, a live-aboard dive boat might be for you. These boats are built to accommodate the specific needs (and gear) of divers, and they navigate special routes and itineraries that include top dive sites. The Galápagos is home to whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, spotted eagle rays, manta rays, sunfish, and many other marine creatures.

Explorer Ventures Humboldt Explorer and Tiburon Explorer

Explorer Ventures ' two live-aboard vessels, the Humboldt Explorer and Tiburon Explorer , accommodate 16 passengers each. The Humboldt has a large dive deck, which makes it easier to get into and out of your dive gear. The eight-day excursion includes up to 19 dives and the 11-day excursion includes up to 28.

Galápagos Nortada

The 84-foot Nortada has only four cabins and can sleep eight guests. Passengers can congregate on the bridge, the galley, or in the dining room and lounge. Dive trips last either seven or 14 nights, and itineraries include up to four dives a day.

Galápagos Aggressor III

The Aggressor ships have been cruising around the Galápagos Islands since 1993. The Galápagos Aggressor III accommodates 16 passengers. Charters last a week and include four dives a day plus two land excursions.

6 Best Galapagos Cruises For Every Kind of Traveler

Galapagos cruises are the best way to experience the collection of remote, mostly uninhabited islands about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. But cruises in the Galapagos Islands aren’t like cruises anyplace else. The ships here are smaller, with some carrying as few as 16 passengers. There are no water slides, elaborate Broadway shows, casinos, or wild nightclubs. And don’t expect big bus tours in port either.

Galapagos cruises are about experiencing nature and wildlife while limiting environmental impact as much as possible. Ships are built for sustainability and toting items like kayaks, paddleboards, and scuba gear. Itineraries may feature two active excursions a day, limiting downtime on board the ship. Instead of museums and historic sights, you’ll visit uninhabited islands to encounter marine iguanas, sea lions, unspoiled beaches, and the adventures of a lifetime.

Trips to the Galapagos Islands are logistically complicated, making cruises an especially good way to experience the area. Travelers to the Galapagos Islands must first fly to Quito or Guayaquil, Ecuador, for a night before flying to the Galapagos to board their ships. All travelers must also be accompanied by National Parks Guides who can help them navigate these largely undeveloped islands.

Galapagos cruise itineraries are typically a week long and cover a portion of the islands, sometimes more. Here's everything to know about cruising in the Galapagos, from frequently asked questions to the best itineraries to book now.

Best Galapagos cruises for families

When is the best time to cruise the galapagos islands .

With pleasant temperatures all year long, the best time to visit the Galapagos Islands is whenever you’re ready to go. Several cruise lines sail to the Galapagos Islands all year long. While you can see wildlife all year, December is hatching season for the giant tortoises, and July is mating season for blue-footed boobies and short-eared owls. Sea turtles lay their eggs early in the year and fully formed marine iguanas typically hatch in April and May.

Are Galapagos cruises expensive?

The Galapagos Islands aren’t a bargain destination. Expect to pay somewhere between $5,000 and $12,000 per traveler depending on the ship, itinerary, and length of the voyage.

One thing’s for sure: Whatever your preference, there’s a Galapagos Islands cruise for you. These are six of the best Galapagos cruises for every type of traveler.

Best luxury Galapagos cruise

There’s no more luxurious way to sail the Galapagos Islands than on  Silversea's Silver Origin , a ship custom-built for cruising these islands. Silver Origin is Silversea’s first destination-specific ship and includes several features meant to minimize its environmental impact. The all-suite ship can carry up to 100 passengers, is all-inclusive down to the premium spirits in your stateroom's minibar, and includes the luxury cruise line’s signature butler service. There’s also a salon and fitness center on board, a rarity for ships sailing in this region. Most itineraries on the Silver Origin are seven nights, but longer cruises are typically scheduled around winter holidays. The Silver Origin sails the north, central, and western loops of the Galapagos Islands.

Best Galapagos cruise for stargazing

This region may be better known for its landscapes and wildlife, but the Galapagos Islands are also an excellent place for stargazing. And there’s no better Galapagos cruise ship for stargazing than the  Celebrity Flora . The 100-passenger vessel feels more like a luxury yacht than an expedition ship. It has a stargazing platform on its top deck and provides binoculars to help guests spot constellations as the ship cruises along the equator. The modern expedition ship also offers a glamping experience that includes a naturalist-guided stargazing session and a luxurious night of glamping under the stars. Prefer to sleep in your bed on board? Have dinner under the stars at the ship’s restaurant before heading back to your suite. The Celebrity Flora ’s Galapagos itineraries range from seven to 16 nights.

Best Galapagos cruise for adventure seekers

Lindblad Expeditions has been cruising the Galapagos Islands for more than 50 years. It now sails to the Galapagos year-round in partnership with National Geographic, giving guests the chance to encounter giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, penguins, sea lions, marine iguanas, and more. A staff of expert guides is on board to help travelers spot wildlife and better understand the volcanic landscapes, mangrove thickets, and seagrasses they encounter. Activities include unforgettable snorkeling adventures, hikes through pristine wilderness, and walks along remote beaches. Lindblad’s newest Galapagos Islands cruise ship, the National Geographic Islander II , feels more like a boutique hotel than an expedition ship and carries just 48 passengers in 26 suites. Some itineraries offer advanced divers the chance to commune with a variety of marine life. And while rugged adventures may await travelers off the ship, each suite offers travelers plenty of comfort: They come equipped with flat-screen TVs, in-room espresso machines, and bathrooms with double sinks.

Best Galapagos cruises for solo travelers

Galapagos cruises aren’t cheap, especially if you’re sailing solo. Hurtigruten makes cruising the Galapagos Islands more affordable by waiving the single supplement on several of its Galapagos cruises. Hurtigruten Galapagos cruises range from seven to 14 days in length and take place on the MS Santa Cruz II , a ship that comes equipped with panga boats, kayaks, snorkeling gear, paddleboards, and a glass-bottom boat for viewing marine life. The ship carries a maximum of 90 passengers, and its operations are carbon-neutral. There’s a small gym and a hot tub on board. Regular prices start around $8,500 for a one-week cruise. Look for sales to bring your price down even further.

Best small ship Galapagos cruise

Avalon Waterways may be better known for its European river cruises , but it also sails the Galapagos Islands. Avalon sails this region on two ships, the Treasure of the Galapagos and the Delfin III . The Delfin III , which also sails the Amazon in Peru, is its newest and most luxurious Galapagos cruise ship. The ship has just 22 suites, almost guaranteeing you’ll make new friends along the journey. The Treasure of the Galapagos is even smaller, carrying a maximum of 16 guests. And while there’s no long list of restaurants on board either ship, there are creative, locally inspired menus featuring seasonal ingredients and lots of vegetarian options. On board both ships, you’ll find daily natural history lectures, a team of multilingual naturalists, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, and plunge pools.

For an adventure your kids will never forget, hop on board an Adventures by Disney cruise of the Galapagos Islands. Just be sure to wait until your kids are at least seven years old. This is the minimum age for most Galapagos cruises, though Disney recommends this itinerary for children eight and older. This isn’t your typical Disney cruise. It’s a small ship expedition itinerary with a hint of Disney magic in a setting fit for a fairy tale. Adventures by Disney's Galapagos itineraries span nine days and visit about 15 sites.

Galapagos Cruises: The Complete Guide

Galapagos map

Making up part of the Republic of Ecuador, the Galapagos is an archipelago of volcanic islands that are known for their vast array of endemic species. Made famous by Charles Darwin during his second voyage, the Galapagos was a central pillar in his theory of evolution by means of natural selection. "A little world within itself' was how the famous naturalist described them.

The islands are one of the few parts of the world not to have an indigenous population. Even today there are only 25,000 residents living on only five of the islands. Most are still uninhabited to protect the wildlife.

Nowadays the Galapagos is a haven for both wildlife and tourists . With the exception of perhaps Antarctica , no where else on earth is the wildlife so unconcerned with humans. You can literally stand next to seals, iguanas and giant tortoise without any change in the animal's demeanours.

However, whilst the wildlife on the islands is unforgettable in itself, it's beneath the waters where the real magic happens! Swim with sharks, sea turtles, seals, penguins and much more without even diving! All you need is a good snorkel and mask.

Because the wildlife of the Galapagos is so important, most islands have heavy restrictions on them and you cannot visit without a certified guide. You are also restricted in what you can and can't do and how many people are ashore at one time. This fact means that cruises to the Galapagos are hugely popular as you will have a certified guide with you at all times to show you the best spots.

There are literally countless itineraries, agencies and ships to choose from in the Galapagos. Although having a wide range of choice is good, it can also feel a little daunting. Below we have answered all the questions you need to make the right choice.

Best Time To Cruise The Galapagos

best time to cruise Galapagos

Unlike other parts of South America , such as Patagonia, the Galapagos is blessed with year-round warm temperatures. This means you can cruise during any period.

Unlike many other islands, the wildlife on the Galapagos are generally not migratory and stay all year.

Despite these facts, there are clear differences between the cooler ad warmer seasons and the chances you have of seeing certain wildlife. Below we explain this in a little more detail.

Warm Season

January through to May is considered the warm period in the Galapagos. During this time temperatures tend to stay around the 80-90 degree mark.

Although warmer, this is also the wetter period and short daily showers are fairly common. During the summer the seas are more calm, and for people who suffer from sea sickness, this can really make a difference.

Sea temperatures are also warmer, making snorkelling extremely pleasant. Diving is slightly better during this period also as the calmer waters means better visibility.

Much of the Galapagos use February, March and April as their breeding season. Giant tortoise eggs hatch during this period and sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Blue-footed boobies are doing their courtship dances, and the magnificent frigate birds are inflating their large red sacs to attract mates.

Cool Season

The cool season in the Galapagos runs from June through to December and is actually the drier season of the two.

Temperatures range from about 70 - 85 degrees, making land-based activities like bike riding and hiking very comfortable.

Trade winds during this period mean that the ocean is slightly rougher and underwater visibility can be reduced sometimes. This is not a major factor as most stops are within protected bays.

The cooler Humbolt Current during this period allows the plankton to thrive. This in turns attracts the larger marine species such as whale sharks, humpback and even blue whales! Ideal for serious divers wanting epic encounters.

Baby sea lions are born in October and you can swim with them in November when their finding their sea legs.

Types of Cruise Ships

types of Galapagos cruise ships

Because of heavy restrictions (which more places should have), mega ships are not allowed within the Galapagos. Only ships carrying less than 100 passengers can sail the islands.

There is also land restrictions with only 20 people allowed ashore at one time. These restrictions are essential in protecting the wildlife that lives here.

Because of this restrictions, cruise goers have three choices when it comes to ship type - small yachts, motor yachts, and expedition ships. Below we discuss each.

expedition cruise to galapagos

Small yachts and sail boats generally carry no more than 16 passengers.

Because there are so few passengers, there will be hardly any queuing time to get ashore. This means you'll get maximum time on the islands which is a great.

However, smaller sail boats obviously have far less space which can feel a little constricting. Your cabin will be smaller, bathrooms tighter and there will be less public space and private areas.

Saying this, many people love the tight-knit atmosphere and getting to know their fellow passengers.

Be aware that smaller boats will feel the motion of the sea more, especially when sailing to another island across open water.

Motor Yachts

Moto yachts are the next step up and carry between 16 and 20 passengers.

Often a good trade-off between the larger ships and small sail boats, motor yachts are now very popular as they provide intimacy without compromising hugely on space.

Although each class of Galapagos ship offers boats from rustic/basic style, through to luxurious, motor yachts tend to have the most luxurious options.

The La Pinta and Isabela II  and the National Geographic Islander are probably three of the best. Each offer class and elegance with excellent guides and activity options.

Expedition Ships

Expedition ships operating within the islands carry between 40-100 passengers.

Expedition ships offer plenty of cabin space, public facilities and home luxuries.

These ships are as close as you'll get in the Galapagos to main line cruise ships (although still far smaller).

These ships are great for families because of the space and options for adjoining cabins. They're also the go-to ship for people who suffer from sea sickness as the motion is considerably less.

The Santa Cruz II, the Legend, and the National Geographic Endeavour II are very popular options.

Galapagos Cruise Cost

Galapagos cruise cost

Obviously with so many ship types, itineraries, and operators, costs can vary quite significantly.

You will also need to consider how long the itinerary is as this will invariably increase or decrease the price. Once on-board though, everything is all-inclusive and there are very few other costs.

For a budget cruise on the shortest itinerary possible (4 days), you should expect to pay between $800 - 1,200. For the same itinerary aboard a luxury boat you will be looking at around $1,700.

For longer itineraries the price increases. For 7 night itineraries, prices start around $2,000 and go up to $3,800 for the luxury options. For 2 week itineraries, you will have to pay at least $4,000 for a budget boat. If you want the ultimate 2 week luxury experience then you'll be looking at atlas $6,200.

We find the most popular itineraries are generally the 7 night options aboard mid-range vessels. For this you'll need to pay between $2,000 - 3,500. We seriously suggest looking at itineraries before looking at prices. It's always worth paying that little bit more if it get you the itinerary of your dreams!

Other Cost Considerations

Beside the main cruise cost, there are also a number of other cost factors to consider.

Solo Travelers

Many of the larger vessels will have solo options, however, you will likely have to pay a supplement fee. Obviously this is not ideal and it's generally cheaper if you can find someone to share with you.

Some operators will be happy to share you with another solo traveler of the same sex. You will need to check this prior to booking.

The Galapagos islands are not particularly easy to reach and this can seriously add to the costs of your trip.

You'll first need to take a flight to Ecuador in either Guayaquil or Quito. You then need to take an internal flight to the Galapagos.

How much this costs you really depends on where you're flying from and how early you book your flights. Click here for more information .

Visa and other Misc. Expenses

There is a $100 entry fee to the Galapagos for ALL tourists. You will also need to factor in Eqcuadorian visas and vaccinations (should you need them).

Other costs to consider are hotels either side of your cruise, airport transfers, laundry expenses, tips, and general spending ashore.

Last Minute Deals

Like many cruise destinations, the option of grabbing a last minute deal can be very enticing.

There is certainly no denying that last minute cruises to the Galapagos are offered frequently. They can often save you 20-40% on your cruise cost. HOWEVER, last minute cruises are a nightmare to plan around as you won't know until the last minute which ship and itinerary you'll be on, let alone the dates of your cruise. You'll also need to be able to drop everything and fly to the Galapagos.

Personally, we believe last minute cruises suit people who are taking a land-based holiday to the Galapagos and decide on the spot to take a cruise on top of their holiday. Otherwise, it's just too risky and difficult to plan. Click here for more information .

Your cruise guides are actually a very important element to consider when choosing your cruise and can have a major impact on your enjoyment. Although the Galapagos strictly regulate and train their guides, many do not actually speak English which can put a slight dampener on the shore excursions.

Guides also vary considerably in their knowledge levels and their ability to communicate their knowledge. You'll often find it's the guides with charisma and ability to communicate ideas that are the best, even if they don't have an encyclopedic knowledge base.

Of course, like everything, the best guides tend to work on the most expensive boats. People like National Geographic only employ the best, but the prices reflect this. Make sure your guide speaks English and has a good reputation. Click here for more information .

Galapagos Wildlife

The wildlife of the Galapagos is without doubt the reason behind the archiplego's popularity. More curious than frightened, most species will happily be within close proximity of humans, including seals, penguins, giant tortoise, iguanas, and sea birds.

For wildlife lovers and photographers, this is a real dream. Your guides will show you these best spot, give you information on the species and make sure that everyone follows the guidelines and has a great time.

Below is a list of the star species and where to see them.

Most shark species can be seen literally anywhere, however, for hammerheads you'll wan to visit  Darwin Island or Wold Islands.

A fair amount of your cruise will be taken up with simply watching the amazing wildlife. Dancing boobies, swimming iguana, playful seals and lumbering tortoises all make wildlife watching super fun. Make sure you bring an awesome pair of binoculars though!

The Galapagos is probably one of the best dive sites in the world for marine life. Most cruises will included several hikes per day, often in the region of 2 hours. These give you a chance to stretch your legs and meet the wildlife up close! You can also take special hikes like climbing the Sierra Negra volcanoes for epic views!

Best Islands To Visit In The Galapagos

Galapagos cruise highlights - Bartolome

Bartolome Island is one of the most photographed islands in the Galapagos thanks to the iconic Pinnacle Rock. Snoreling around the rock is incredibly good with most visitors seeing penguins, green sea turtles, tropical fish, and white-tipped reef sharks.

Galapagos cruise highlights - santa cruz

The capital island of the Galapagos, Santa Cruz is the starting point of many cruises and land-based tours. Las Bachas Beach is great for bird watching and sea turtles, whilst the highlands are the best place to see giant tortoise. Also visit the Charles Darwin Research Centre here.

Galapagos cruise highlights - Espanola

Over 4 million years old, Espanola is one of the oldest islands in the Galapagos. Its also the archipelago’s southernmost island and offer a variety of wildlife unsurpassed in the region! Without doubt the best place to see albatross nesting and taking flight.

Galapagos cruise highlights - Floreana

One of the most fascinating islands thanks to its rich wildlife and even richer history! Murderers, pirates, aristocracy and more make the human history of this island come to life. Its also one of the best places to snorkel - expect to see sea lions, penguins, and rays. There is also a great giant tortoise reserve.

Galapagos cruise highlights -Genovesa

Often termed 'Bird Island', Genovesa is a lovely island thanks to its nazca and red-footed booby colonies. You can also spot mockingbirds, Darwin finches, frigatebirds,  and red-billed tropicbirds. Genovesa is also a great spot to swim with hammerhead sharks should you wish it!

San Cristobal

Galapagos cruise highlights - San Cristobal

The oldest of all the archipelago's islands, San Cristobal has the only other airport in the Galapagos. It's also home to some beautiful bird colonies including red and blue-footed boobies and large friagtebirds. Surfers and beach lovers will also love this island.

Galapagos cruise highlights - Santa Fe

Santa Fe hosts the largest forest of Opuntia cactus in the archipelago. More commonly known as the Galapagos prickly pear, these forests are perfect for a unique hike. The island is also home to sea lions, manta rays, sea turtles, and giant iguanas.

Galapagos cruise highlights - Isabela

Isabele Island is the largest island within the Galapagos and the second most volcanically active place in the world thanks to it's 6 volcanoes. Swim with marine iguanas and penguins or Hike across the barren lava fields - maybe even climb one!

North Seymour

Galapagos cruise highlights - North Seymour

North Seymour Island is a paradise for bird lovers. Wander along the dirt paths and see frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies nesting in the barren rocks. Beautiful yellow land iguanas and pink flamingos are very common here and you can also snorkel with sea turtles.

Choosing The Right Galapagos Itinerary

Because there are so many operators and itineraries, it can be a nightmare deciding which cruise is the best option! You'll first need to decide how long you have. Galapagos cruises range from 4 - 4 nights and this will affect your itinerary significantly.

Because of regulations implemented by the Galapagos National Park, you must choose an itinerary over 10 nights to see all the islands. Shorter cruises can not visit all the islands and habitats on offer.

You'll see many Galapagos cruises named different things like 'Wild Galapagos' or 'Classic Galapagos'. However, you need to look at the map to see where the cruise goes as pretty much every Galapagos cruise can be separated into four categories - North, South, East, and West.

The only variations on these come when you do a super short cruise or a very long cruise. Below we discus each in more detail.  Click here for more information .

Northern Itineraries

Galapagos cruise itineraries - Northern

The Northern itineraries cover islands such as Santiago, Rabid, Bartolome, North Seymour and Genovesa. The longer cruise will also visit the northern parts of Isabela and Fernandina. One of the most popular regions thanks to Bartolome and North Seymour.

Southern Itineraries

Galapagos cruise itineraries - Southern

The Southern itineraries cover the  islands of San Cristobal, Santa Fe, Floreana and Espanola. Shorter itineraries in this region often don't visit Santa Fe or Espanola. Great for people wanting to swim with sea lions, rays, sharks etc.

Western Itineraries

Galapagos cruise itineraries - Western

The Western itineraries generally cover Isabela and Fernandina islands. Because both a quite large (especially Isabela), there is more than enough to see on both. Longer itineraries will often include Santiago and Floreana. Isabela is a fantastically diverse and volcanic island than visitors absolutely love.

Eastern Itineraries

Galapagos cruise itineraries - Eastern

The Eastern itineraries cover the islands of Santa Cruz, Genovesa, Santa Fe, San Cristobal, Baltra Island, and Espanola. The longer itineraries will include all the islands, whilst the shorter ones tend to leave out either Genovesa or San Cristobal. Eastern itineraries are great for land iguanas and giant tortoise.

Short/Brief Itineraries

Galapagos cruise itineraries - Brief

Most regions also offer what is called 'Brief itineraries'. These are generally 4 nights long and visit 2 or 3 islands, depending on region. Some of these cruises visit just as many islands as the longer itineraries, but you won't get to explore as many spots. Perfect for people with not a lot of time on their hands.

Longer Itineraries

Galapagos cruise itineraries - Longer

Although most itineraries stick to one of the four regions - North, South, East and West, there are a number of longer itineraries that combine several regions or more. Some of the longest itineraries visit all the main islands which allow passengers to get a wonderful sense of the habitat and species of the islands.

Galapagos Packing List

Galapagos cruise packing list

Although the weather in the Galapagos is very good all year-round, you'll still ned to consider what you pack quite carefully.

You'll need to take into account things like extra activities, temperature, swim gear and lots more.

Below we have given a quick rundown of each packing list element to think about prior to leaving.

Items To Consider

Clothing: The weather will be quite warm no matter the you travel. Make sure you wear lightweight, breathable clothing. Also bring a lightweight rain jacker for this common Summer showers.

Swimwear: You'll be snorkelling every day during your cruise, so make sure you bring some comfortable swimmer. Wetsuits are generally not needed, unless you really feel the cold.

Sunglasses: Wearing a good pair of polarised sunglasses is going to make it far easier to spot wildlife!

Footwear: You're going to make a number of wet landings during your Galapagos cruise. We suggest bringing some good-quality water boots with you. Good for snorkelling also.

Bags and Daypacks: When ashore you'll want access to your camera, water bottle, towel, snacks etc. Make sure you have a good quality day pack with you.

Why Galapagos?

Because of the magical and pristine of the islands. As this is the home of the most fantastic land and marine species. Animals of features and behaviors unique, which shows what life was like before humans. But the Galapagos Islands are not only landscapes, colors, diversity of types of beaches, pristine ecosystems or amazing animals, […]

Because of the magical and pristine of the islands. As...

Its pristine terrestrial and marine ecosystems, amid captivating landscapes, are a sanctuary for the most wonderful land and sea creatures. The unique characteristics of these islands (isolation, weather, ocean currents, geology) created the perfect natural conditions for them to become a “living laboratory of evolution”.

The Islands

The Islands

Islands and beaches of all colors, cliffs and stunning geological formations, bays and coves lapped by very rich ocean waters. With unique landscapes and magical corners, each of the islands has its own character. The Galapagos Islands are a natural sanctuary of pristine land and marine ecosystems isolated in the vast ocean. Visiting them is like being transported to a bygone era.

Unique Wildlife

Unique Wildlife

The islands where their unusual high percentage of endemic animals (animals found nowhere else on the planet) will captivate you with their truly unique and fascinating forms, behavior and fearlessness. Animals that after arriving from far away distances have evolved to create new species, and will teach you what it means to adapt to a change. They were, in fact, Charles Darwin’s inspiration for his Theory of Evolution.

Adventure Time: Things You Need To Know Before Taking An Expedition Cruise

“Leave your suitcase on the dock, grab a life jacket, and jump on the boat.”

Instead of using a walkway to get to our ship, we had to take a short boat ride, so I dutifully snapped the clasps of the bright red life jacket, found a spot on the edge of an inflatable zodiac boat (holding on to the rope behind me for dear life), and wondered what I had gotten myself into.

But by the end of the week, I was grateful that I had signed up for the expedition cruise. Though I had researched what to expect on the trip, experience is truly the best teacher. As the week unfolded, I learned a lot about this form of exploration and the type of people who take such cruises. Below are the most important takeaways.

Expedition ships are much smaller than traditional cruise ships

One of the first things to know before signing up for an expedition cruise is the ship size will pale in comparison to what you’re used to. While ships will vary in size, the MS Santa Cruz II holds up to 90 passengers, and our sailing had a little more than 60 passengers. I stayed in an explorer cabin, which had a comfortable double-size bed, wide window, and crisp navy and white nautical-inspired decor.

Since the ship is smaller, you can feel more movement, and we did experience some intense swaying one night, which made me nauseous. The crew provided me with anti-nausea medication, and I spent a few hours on the observation deck getting fresh air. Sea sickness is more common on a smaller ship, and if it’s your first time on a smaller cruise ship, it may take some time to get your “sea legs.”

And though the ship was small, the food was a big highlight. Hurtigruten Expeditions is a top-of-the-line cruise company, and the food they provided did not disappoint. Breakfast was a buffet of traditional dishes like bacon, eggs, pastries, waffles, and fresh fruit, and lunch and dinner were made-to-order three-course meals and included ceviche, roasted chicken, and prime rib. Alcoholic drinks were complimentary during mealtimes and there also was a bar for ordering drinks at night.

Your packing list is going to look a little different

The dress code on an expedition cruise is very casual. For most of the cruise, we wore our expedition gear (for me that meant leggings or shorts and a T-shirt). For a warm-weather voyage, it’s important to bring clothes that are going to get wet and possibly dirty and lots of sun protection because you’ll spend 90 percent of your day outdoors.

Be sure to pack a sunhat, water shoes, swimsuits, or a rash guard. I purchased a long-sleeve swimsuit at the airport in Quito, which turned out to be one of my best travel purchases. It’s also important to bring a backpack to store a change of clothes. In order to get to our expeditions, we had to disembark on the zodiac boat (sometimes two or three times a day) and we spent most of our time hiking, snorkeling, or swimming.

Off-ship activities are the focus

Expedition cruises are all about, well, you guessed it, expeditions. I had come with the sole purpose of seeing the Galápagos Islands, which are made up of 13 main islands and several small islands and islets. People flock here for the biodiversity and remoteness of the islands; most are uninhabited, and when we landed on an island, we were the only ones there.

Each day, there was a full itinerary waiting for us, and I explored several islands during the cruise. The first was Isabela, the largest of the Galápagos Islands. The volcanic island was covered in lush vegetation and it looked like something from a Jurassic Park movie. We sailed around the perimeter of the island, and I saw penguins, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies. Later that afternoon, I went for a glass-bottom boat ride where giant stingrays and sea turtles greeted us.

On Fernandina Island, we hiked the rocky terrain, dodged cacti, and took photos of sea otters just inches from us. My favorite stop was Santa Cruz, the most populated island, which is home to Galápagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Research Center. After visiting both centers, we headed to a tortoise farm, where we had close encounters with giant 100-year-old tortoises. Our last stop was Floreana Island, home to pink flamingos and white sand beaches.

An open mind and sense of adventure are necessary

Though you could carve out time to relax, an expedition cruise isn’t necessarily for travelers who want to lie by a pool with a cocktail in hand or who need non-stop entertainment. On our cruise, nightly activities included our tour guides hosting educational lectures, and our schedule was packed with activities (some that started as early as 7:30 a.m.).

An expedition cruise is great for those who have already done a bit of traveling and want to go deeper into exploring a location. My cruise was made up of a mix of families, retirees, and professionals in search of adventure. Though it wasn’t a typical cruise experience, this trip ended up making a significant impression on me. The wilderness of the Galápagos Islands coupled with up-close encounters with the wildlife is something I’ll never forget.

Small Ship Adventure Cruising

  • Ways to travel

Forget shuffleboard and cabaret—adventure cruising is all about the destination.

Cruising is an adventure in itself, but the beauty of travelling on a small ship with less than 50 passengers means the real fun begins when we pull into port or drop anchor at an island. It means you'll get to know the locals, rather than outnumber them. You'll still be looked after by your crew and get to relax on the deck, but you'll also get to kayak along the rivers of  Krka National Park , explore Montenegro ’s surprising fjordic landscapes, or snorkel with giant  Galapagos tortoises . It's about going where the big ships can't so you can swim in hidden coves, buy fish at local markets to barbeque for dinner, and wander through little Croatian laneways with your leader. This is cruising—Intrepid style.

Our Adventure Cruising trips operate on a Motor Yacht that carries between 16-36 passengers, and the primary propulsion method is motorised. The decor varies between ships with some contemporary and some more traditional in their styling.

View all ships

What are the cabins like? Why are they different prices?

All cabins are air-conditioned and our ship generators provide an electric current of 220v. Cabins are equipped with European type plugs so please remember to bring an adaptor if necessary.

Please be aware that cabins are compact in size, with wardrobe and storage space also compact. All cabins on all ships have private bathrooms with hairdryers and come with some toiletries such as shampoo and shower gel. A safe and minibar (containing water) are in every cabin. Pricing depends on the cabin type - similar to a hotel, some cabins offer superior views, larger windows/portholes and larger or additional living space. You can view cabin types on our ships  page.

How long will be spent between sailing and port?

As much as possible, most relocation sailing will take place at night, allowing for more time to be spent at port and exploring. The majority of itineraries have at least one port stop or swim stop every day. In places of particular interest the ship will moor all day, allowing additional time for shore excursions and off-ship activities. It’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the trip itinerary in order to be aware of what time is scheduled at port and what excursions are on offer. However, please be aware that weather conditions may prompt a change to published itineraries.

How much time will I have on shore at each stop?

The amount of time you spend ashore at each stop will vary depending on the stop and each individual itinerary. It is not always possible to give accurate arrival and departure times from each port. Travelling on a small ship means we are more affected by changes to the winds and tides. If conditions are in our favour we may make excellent time and arrive in port earlier than expected. But if conditions are against us, it may take longer to reach our next stop. One of the charms of small ship cruising is letting nature be part of your journey.

How accessible are the ships?

It’s important to be aware that none of the ships have lifts, and moving between decks will involve climbing fairly steep stairways. To disembark the ship in port, you will need to walk down a narrow gangway lowered to the dock. It’s important to be aware that none of the ships have lifts and moving between decks will involve climbing fairly steep stairways. To disembark the ship in port, you will need to walk down a narrow gangway lowered to the dock. On our Croatian cruises, you will usually dock at all ports, and tenders (small dinghies) are rarely used. On our Galapagos cruises, we use zodiacs to transport you between the boat and land. You will need to be comfortable getting in and out of the zodiacs to enjoy all the included activities throughout the itinerary. Our crew are always at hand to assist you.

Will I get seasick?

How often the ship sails in open waters depends on the itinerary. The itineraries that sail along the coast should experience sheltered conditions on most days, but those that sail between islands will cross open waters and may sail through heavier seas. Unless you are certain that you’re impervious to seasickness, it is necessary to come prepared with precautionary medication or other methods of combatting seasickness. Please be aware that there are no doctors aboard the ships.

Who will I be travelling with?

Our Adventure Cruises in the Galapagos have a maximum of 16 passengers and Croatia cruises have a maximum of 36 passengers.

What if I’m travelling solo?

On all our Intrepid itineraries, if you’re travelling solo, it is possible to share a twin share cabin with another passenger of the same gender, depending on availability. If you would like your own cabin, you can choose to pay a single supplement and receive a cabin to yourself.

What language is spoken on the ship?

The language on board is English (with fluent staff).

Is the itinerary always the same?

By its nature, all travel by sea is subject to the weather, winds, and tides. Occasionally the order in which we visit destinations may need to change to accommodate weather conditions and, sometimes, other ports may be substituted. Safety is always our first priority. All ships are operated by an experienced captain and crew.

What will the weather be like?

For the comfort and pleasure of our guests, our itineraries generally follow warm rather than hot weather patterns. The world's climate being at times unpredictable, our small ships are seldom far from a sheltered bay or port.

What is the official currency on board?

On our Croatia cruises, the Euro is the official currency on board. On our Galapagos Islands cruises, USD is the official currency onboard.  There is an optional credit system for expenses on board that may be paid/settled at the end of the cruise. Credit card payment is not always accepted on board. Please refer to the essential trip information” for further information

What if I have dietary requirements?

Most dietary requirements can be catered for on all ships, except for kosher and halal. Please advise us at the time of booking and we will do all that we can.

Are alcoholic drinks available on board?

Alcoholic drinks are available on all ships and are reasonably priced. For example, EUR5 for the cocktail of the day or EUR3.50 for a glass of wine. The bar runs on a chit system where you sign for drinks as you purchase them, with the amount added to your on-board account. This account is settled at the end of the voyage.

Is there a dress code on board?

Dress aboard the boat is very casual – it is a holiday after all. However, you may wish to bring a smarter outfit, such as a sundress or a shirt with a collar, for the final night’s Captain’s Dinner or if you plan to eat off the ship in port.

Is there Internet available on board?

Wifi is available on our ships at an additional cost. Please note, it may be unavailable in more remote locations or when sailing.

Can I combine an Adventure Cruise with another land tour?

Yes definitely, and it's a popular option for many. While dates might not always align perfectly, there are plenty of options like day tours  to bridge the time between the tours. Contact us or your local travel agent to find out more.

Are the Adventure Cruises guaranteed departures?

If you've found a tour you like, we can request space and confirm availability within 2-4 days.  Once availability is confirmed, a deposit is required within 7 days.  We suggest not booking other things like flights until availability is confirmed.

Once the space is confirmed by our local team and your deposit has been paid, your tour is guaranteed to depart - meaning you can book your airfares and additional accommodation with confidence. Please note that like all of our tours, this is subject to our regular booking conditions.

Why are the cabins different prices?

Pricing depends on the cabin type. Similar to how hotel room pricing works, some cabins offer superior views, larger windows/portholes and larger or additional living space. You can view cabin types on our ships  page. Contact us  to find out more

Are flights included?

While International flights aren't included in the tour cost, we can assist with booking these. Our partnerships with the major airlines mean we can get you the best price on flights for your intended travel dates. Sometimes it can be challenging organising flights. Some destinations are harder to get to than others, and we know it can be tricky trying to negotiate dates, transfers and prices. So speak to us  about how we can get you there easier.

Can you book additional accommodation, day tours and transfers?

Yes, we can generally assist with all of this when you're ready to book your trip. Contact us  to find out more.

Can I go swimming from the ship?

Of course! All ships have a swimming platform which is usually located at the back of the ship. The crew will always be present to monitor the safety of swimmers, watching either from the ship or a small zodiac safety boat. Additional towels are available during swim stops. All ships are equipped with snorkelling equipment that you are free to use. Some ships also offer kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for use at swim stops.

What is included in my cruise cost?

We include: a minimum of two meals daily, activities and land excursions (as per the itinerary), Comfortable accommodation on the boat, all port fees, services of local tour leaders, airport arrival transfer, drinking water, 24-hour coffee station with fruit and snacks, and snorkelling equipment. Some trips have kayaks and stand-up paddleboards available for use.

What is not included in my cruise cost?

We do not include: International flights, travel insurance, discretionary tips for leaders and crew, some meals, onboard purchases (such as beverages), hotel-to-port transfer (if arriving prior to the day of embarkation), airport departure transfer (unless pre-booked), any additional hotel accommodation not outlined in trip itinerary, personal expenses.

Are tips included in the price?

Tips for all crew and services are at your discretion

Where can I find the joining point/hotel details for my trip?

Your agent or sales representative will provide you with all the necessary joining point details once you have booked, along with other essential trip information. This information can also be found on the web page for your trip – scroll down past the itinerary until you see the Essential Trip Information link.

11 Ways to Find a Cheap Cruise: The Secrets of Cruise Discounts in 2024

By Tamara Hinson

May 31, 2024

Bag a shoulder season deal

In travel, shoulder season is the period between peak season and low season, and you’ll find it in cruising, too. Cruise lines don’t only offer consistently lower prices during shoulder season sailings—they’ll typically offer regular flash sales during these times, too.

“Keep an eye out for flash sales during shoulder seasons,” says Elaine Warren, founder of specialist cruise travel agency FamilyCruiseCompanion.com . “Cruise lines are desperate to fill ships during these times. I've found some real steals by being ready to book as soon as I see a great offer pop up.”

Bear in mind that different regions have different shoulder seasons. In Alaska, for example, the main shoulder seasons are April and early May, and then at the end of summer between September and mid-October. Europe’s shoulder seasons are April and May, and then again in September to November. For Caribbean cruises, it’s May, June, and July and then in December, January, and March.

Try to book at least six months in advance

Passionate cruisers Don and Heidi Bucolo, founders of top cruise blog EatSleepCruise.com , say that advance booking can be a key to great deals.

“Our advice is to book cruises between 6 and 12 months in advance. Typically, cruise prices tend to go up closer to the sail date, especially for newer ships or for more desirable travel dates.”

Consider repositioning cruises

Repositioning cruises are one-way sailings during which ships relocate from one region to another, like when they switch between summer Europe sailings to a winter Caribbean schedule. Because these voyages typically cross entire oceans, they’re a great way to see multiple regions.

You’ll need to brush up on shoulder seasons to find the best deals. For example, autumn is when ships based in the Mediterranean are most likely to head to the Caribbean’s sunnier shores, while spring is when ships based in the Middle East often reposition to the Mediterranean. But when you find a good repositioning run the savings can be huge.

“Repositioning cruises can be 50% cheaper than regular sailings, offering great value and the chance to discover destinations many travelers overlook,” says Jeremy Clubb, founder of Antarctica Cruises .

Consider an itinerary with fewer port days

On the itinerary of the cruise you’re considering, pay extra attention to the number of in-port days and the number of sea days. Doing so can help make your money go further while also making sure you get the most out of your sailing.

“I always try to weigh up port days versus sea days based on the [client’s] interests and budget,” says travel advisor Elaine Warren, founder of FamilyCruiseCompanion.com . “Extra time on board means fewer shore excursions, and excursion costs can really add up over a week.”

Leverage your loyalty

If you’re considering booking with a cruise line you’ve sailed with before, ask for a loyalty discount. Remember that it always pays to ask. "Even if your preferred cruise line doesn’t explicitly promote loyalty discounts, there’s absolutely no harm in asking for one,” says Jeremy Clubb at Antarctica Cruises . “More often than not, you’ll be successful because cruise lines prefer to incentivize repeat business rather than spend more attracting new customers.”

Book your next cruise while you’re still aboard

When you’re still on a cruise, you’ll almost always be able to get a discount off future sailings on the same cruise line, and many ships have special booking desks set up expressly to handle new reservations. Some lines will also give you onboard credits to use for expenses on your next voyage. So if you’re planning another vacation with the same cruise line, don’t wait until you’re on dry land.

Ask about special discounts

You may not know that many cruise lines offer fixed discounts to shareholders, military personnel, senior citizens, and members of the armed forces. And the reason you may not know is they’re usually poorly advertised, and when they are, details are often vague at best.

For example, Royal Caribbean promotes discounts for anyone aged 55 and over ( RoyalCaribbean.com ) but only on selected cruises, while Cunard touts onboard credit offers to members of the armed forces ( Cunard.com/en-us/military ). Norwegian Cruise Line gets bonus points for clearly laying out its discounts for shareholders on a dedicated page ( NCLhltd.com ) although there’s no information relating to other discounts.

It’s important to bear in mind that cruise lines won’t necessarily shout about available discounts—if you don’t ask, you won’t get them.

Don’t hold out for last-minute bargains

These days, waiting for last-minute cruise discounts can end up costing you more.

“While cruise lines once used last-minute reductions to fill their ships, there’s not currently any need for them,” says Chris Owen, founder of ChrisCruises.com ). “This is because, currently, post-pandemic, there’s no need as there’s still this huge pent-up demand.”

Hold off booking that expedition cruise

If you dream of exploring Antarctica or gawping at the Galapagos’ sea lions but you’re put off by the high prices associated with this type of cruise, don’t despair. Cruise lines are constructing an ever-growing number of expedition-style ships serving these destinations, and as availability to these regions increases with time, prices are likely to fall.

“More cruise lines are starting to offer expedition voyages,” say Don and Heidi at EatSleepCruise.com . “In the coming years, there will be an increase in the number of cruises being offered to places once considered remote—destinations like Antarctica, the Arctic Circle and the Galapagos are all becoming more accessible.”

Consider older ships

Only looking at new ships could cost you dearly, and the rewards aren’t necessarily worth it.

“Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas , the world's largest cruise ship, has cruise fares which are close to double what you might pay for similar sailings on other megaships from the brand's older Oasis-class ships, which were once record-breaking ships and still have loads of onboard attractions and amenities,” says the team behind  EatSleepCruise.com . “To get the most value for your money, we’d suggest looking at ships which are between 5 and 7 years old. These will still offer some of the best on-board options in terms of restaurants, entertainment, and nightlife but will be considerably cheaper than ships which are 1 or 2 years old.”

Use a trusted travel advisor

As tempting as it might be to go it alone, booking through a travel agency—ideally, one specializing in cruises—will frequently result in the best deals. Because they deal with the cruise lines often, travel advisors may know how to find the best discounts, too.

“Travel advisors can access the best perks, like on-board credit and free gratuities, as well as other promotions in addition to the deals the cruise line might be offering at that time,” say Don and Heidi of EatSleepCruise.com . “Additionally, they’ll be able to help with any issues that may arise before or during your trip.”

If you know the specific line and departure date you want to take but don’t know a good travel agent to book it with,  CruiseCompete.com , which has been running since 2003, allows travelers to obtain free price quotes from multiple travel agents at the same time. Many of them will throw in upgrades or onboard credits to earn your business.
