Everything You Need to Know About the Borg Queen

Long live the Queen!

Star Trek: Picard

StarTrek.com

“I am the beginning, the end, the one who is many. I am the Borg.”

The central locus of the Borg Collective is the amoral Borg Queen . Through her, like the queen of an insect colony, the Hive mind is granted order and common direction.

As the Villain Showdown enter its fourth week, pitting the Borg Queen against Gul Dukat , we’ve put together this handy guide on everything you need to know about the Queen.

Star Trek: First Contact

The One Who is Many

Throughout the history of the Borg Collective, there have been a number of Queens. Only one Queen exists at any given time; when she is destroyed, a new Queen takes her place. In Star Trek: Voyager, it's revealed that the Borg Queen isn't a singular entity, but the name given to any that serves as its host, possessing all previous Queen's collective consciousness.

The Borg , a fusion of organic and synthetic matter, and their relentless pursuit of perfection brought fear to all quadrants of the galaxy. Residing primarily at Unimatrix One in the Delta Quadrant , the Borg Queen is the only one able to think independently from the Collective; possessing a unique personality and sense of individuality — traits not seen within the Borg.

The first Borg Queen (Alice Krige) made her debut with Star Trek: First Contact (1996) as the Borg sought to erase a historical moment in Starfleet history— First Contact Day —traveling back in time to prevent the creation and need of the Federation .

The Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact

In her lair, the Borg Queen remains disembodied with just her head and spinal column — the epitome of perfection — with no remnants of her humanoid form. When she leaves her home base for assimilation efforts, she will reassemble herself into a predominantly artificial body.

Your Culture Will Adapt to Service Us.

The Borg doesn’t value the Federation’s belief in individuality – its mission is to add others’ biological and technological distinctiveness to their own, strengthening the Collective in its pursuit of perfection. Defeating their opponents isn’t enough; they sought to assimilate their enemies’ minds and flesh.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard still endures residual trauma decades later following his assimilation into the Borg . As Locutus of the Borg, selected to be their voice to facilitate their introduction into human society, Picard believed he never fully regained himself after they striped away his humanity and sense of self.

The Borg Queen in Star Trek: Voyager -

There is No 'Me,' Only 'Us'

It is in Star Trek: Voyager where we learn that the Borg Queen, obsessed with power, didn’t create the Borg; she was just tasked with leading the Collective. The collective consciousness, where each drone is linked through the subspace network, allows for the Borg to adapt quickly and eliminate threats as they arise.

In the episode " Dark Frontier " of Star Trek: Voyager, the Borg Queen believes Seven of Nine 's presence is vital to their path forward in their approach to assimilate Earth, seeing value in Seven's knowledge of humanity. The Borg Queen tries to lure her back to the Collective by "allowing" her to remain an individual instead of reverting to a drone. The Queen's seduction involved telling Seven she's "unique," and her experience will add to their perfection. However, she can't be selfish and only think of just her individual self.

Resistance is Futile.

When a Borg Queen is destroyed, another Queen is propped up. Susanna Thompson portrays the Borg Queen in Star Trek: Voyager ’s two-parter, “ Dark Frontier ” and “ Unimatrix Zero .”

Most recently, the Borg Queen was played by Annie Wersching in Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard .

Secrets of the Borg Queen, The

Bringing Order to Chaos

In Star Trek: Picard , the Borg Queen is cut off from the Borg Collective due the actions of Q and a divergence in time. As a result, she becomes wholly and fully obsessed with Agnes Jurati.

Star Trek: Picard -

Seen as the last of the Borg, instead of finding the Collective, she sets her sights on Agnes in hopes of building out a new Borg collective.

Everything We Know About the Borg Queen After 'Star Trek: Picard' Season 2

Now that 'Star Trek: Picard' Season 2 has come to a close, let's unpack everything we know about the long-lost Borg Queen.

Star Trek: Picard has ended its strong, focused second season, having tossed the principal characters first into a dark alternate timeline and then several centuries into the past, all thanks to Jean-Luc Picard’s ( Patrick Stewart ) trickster-god nemesis, Q ( John DeLancie ). The major Season 1 characters returned: Captain Rios ( Santiago Cabrera ) now commands a new version of Picard’s old ship the Stargazer ; Raffi ( Michelle Hurd ) and Elnor ( Evan Evagora ) now serve together on a new Excelsior , and Seven of Nine is once again a Fenris Ranger and caretaker of Rios’ beloved La Sirena .

Dr. Agnes Jurati ( Alison Pill ) is another returning character, and for most of this second season, it seemed like the show did not know what to do with her . Then, at about the halfway mark, Jurati’s fate intertwines with one other character, who Star Trek fans haven’t seen in a long time: the Borg Queen ( Annie Wersching ). So who is the Borg Queen? Let’s take a look at her legacy and her current incarnation.

RELATED: How 'Star Trek: Picard' Squandered the Potential of Its New Characters

The One Who Is Many

1997’s Star Trek: First Contact establishes several updates to the Borg which carried over into later series, including Picard. They have the ability to assimilate via retractable cybernetic tentacles, and while we knew they were a decentralized collective, First Contact reveals the singular entity controlling this collective: the Borg Queen, played in that film by Alice Krige .

Krige would go on to portray the character in several episodes of Star Trek: Voyager , including the series finale. Susanna Thompson stepped in to play the Queen in the crucial "Unimatrix Zero" two-parter, setting up a strange mystery that to date has not been directly addressed. At the end of First Contact , the Queen is killed by Captain Picard, who severs her cybernetic spinal cord after Data ( Brent Spiner ) is able to destroy her organic components. The crew of the Voyager encounter the Borg and the Queen in the Delta Quadrant, and the show does not attempt to explain how the Queen can be alive following the events of First Contact .

The Voyager crew encounter the Borg many times during the show’s run, with the series finale centering around a future Janeway ( Kathryn Mulgrew ), who travels back in time to guide her younger self in battle against the Borg. Future Janeway knows that a Borg transwarp hub can propel the ship back to the Alpha Quadrant, and sacrifices herself to poison the Borg Queen and clear the way for Voyager ’s return.

The Borg Slayer

Fast forward to the second season of Picard , which deposits the admiral and company into a dark alternate timeline. Picard himself is a galactically-feared conqueror of countless alien species, and is set to exterminate yet another: the Borg Queen.

In Season 1 of Picard , former Borg drone and Voyager crew member Seven of Nine accessed a Queencell in the massive, abandoned Borg cube known as the Artifact. The concept of a chamber in each Borg cube which could only be accessed by the Queen was made canon. Seven of Nine then relinked herself to the rest of the collective, taking control of them all and allowing the La Sirena crew chance to escape.

The Season 2 premiere ends with a version of the Borg Queen appearing on the bridge of Rios’s Stargazer. Drawn to yet another massive spatial anomaly, Picard’s presence has been requested by an unknown species looking to formally join the United Federation of Planets. This turns out to be a previously-unknown Borg Queen, and as her massive cybernetic tentacles bury themselves in the Stargazer’s consoles and take over her systems, Picard orders the ship to self-destruct.

Jump ahead to this alternate timeline. As the main characters adjust to their surroundings, we learn that Seven was never assimilated by the Borg here. This Annika Hansen has no implants and is in fact the President of the Federation. She is about to honor Picard with the title “Borg Slayer” as he executes the Borg Queen before presumably the entire galaxy.

Echoing Timelines

The misplaced crew quickly comes together, and they learn that they're path back home runs right through the Borg Queen. In this timeline, Agnes Jurati is a scientist working for the Dark Federation and has access to the Queen, who is held in some kind of storage unit. We learn that the Borg have some kind of extrasensory perception of alternate timelines. This Borg Queen understands that the timeline has shifted, and knows who they all are and what they're doing.

Given Seven's reveal that the Queencells were not necessarily created for any one Borg Queen, the notion of a time-shift-sensitive Queen suggests that the Borg Queen could perhaps split her consciousness into many different avatars at once, allowing her to exist as simultaneous incarnations of herself. This could also explain her ability to inhabit the consciousness of Dr. Agnes Jurati. The Queen infiltrates Jurait's mind and in short order finds herself loose on the streets of L.A. in the early 21st century. The Queen needs a certain amount of elements and endorphins to grow her strength, and soon Jurati and the Queen are locked in a battle for control of Jurati's body.

The Star Gazer

The survival of our main characters depends on an internal debate which Jurati eventually wins. She convinces the Borg Queen that no matter the timeline, the Borg are always eventually defeated, whether by "a lone Borg slayer or United Federation." She convinces the Borg Queen that she and her drones will never able to overcome and achieve the perfection she seeks.

Before the season's ultimate dénouement, we watch Jurati and the Borg Queen find a common ground. Borg Queen Jurati then takes off in La Sirena, theoretically giving the Borg a 400-year head start on assimilating the galaxy. Picard and company wrap up their business in the past, repairing the timeline. With what is presumably the equivalent of his final breath, Q sends everyone save Rios (who elects to stay in the past) back to the bridge of the Stargazer, where all of this started.

Picard orders the bridge crew to stand down, cancels the self-destruct sequence, and waits. Borg Queen Jurati reveals herself, and the entire narrative comes full circle. The Borg now openly offer species the opportunity to assimilate. The Borg's request to join the Federation may not have been a ruse, after all. The finale reveal, Borg Queen Jurati tells Picard that there is a much bigger threat out there, one that will necessitate the Federation and the Borg working together. With the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation all officially returning for Season 3, we can expect the ramifications of Picard 's continuity-breaking overhaul fo the Borg to become the focal point of the show's third and final season.

Doctor Agnes P. Jurati was a female Human cyberneticist who worked at the Daystrom Institute during the late 24th century . ( PIC : " Remembrance ")

After an encounter with the defeated Borg Queen of an alternate timeline , a trip into the past, and her own assimilation, Jurati returned four hundred years later, and reunited with her friends, now as the Queen of a small Borg Cooperative. ( PIC : " Farewell ")

Daystrom Institute career [ ]

Jurati was recruited out of Starfleet by Bruce Maddox to aid in his android research, and characterized their work as "coming close" to being able to create an advanced android similar to Data . However, after the banning of synthetic lifeforms following the Attack on Mars , as well as the disappearance of Maddox, much of her research was stalled and ground to a halt.

She was approached by retired Admiral Jean-Luc Picard at the Institute's Division of Advanced Synthetic Research in 2399 , and they discussed the possibilities of creating a new, flesh-and-blood android comparable with previous Soong-types via fractal neuronic cloning . ( PIC : " Remembrance ")

After Picard related his experiences with Dahj Asha to Jurati, she researched Dahj, who had recently been offered a fellowship at the Daystrom institute. Jurati told Picard that Dahj's identity, including records of education on Regulus , appeared to have been fabricated only three years prior . ( PIC : " Maps and Legends ")

Joining Picard [ ]

Shortly after her second meeting with Picard, Jurati received a visit from Commodore Oh , the head of Starfleet Security . Oh questioned Jurati about the latter's communications with the retired Admiral, and told her that Picard was likely to go looking for Bruce Maddox and Dahj's twin sister Soji . Via mind meld , Oh showed Jurati the Admonition , leading her to believe it was a record of a long-dead civilization that was destroyed after they built sentient synths. With this, Oh convinced Jurati that the creation of sentient synths would once again bring about the end of all organic life in the Galaxy, and Jurati needed to "atone" for her role in developing these synths. Oh ordered Jurati to join Picard on his mission, and to kill Maddox and Soji. Oh also placed a psychic block to prevent Jurati from revealing exactly what she saw. Finally, Oh gave Jurati a viridium tracker . ( PIC : " Nepenthe ", " Broken Pieces ")

Jurati subsequently appeared at Château Picard in the midst of an attack by Romulan assassins . Jurati shot one of the assassins, then insisted on joining Picard on La Sirena for his mission. She found the first part of the journey "boring", and kept herself entertained with academic journals and flirting with Cristobal Rios , the captain of La Sirena . ( PIC : " The End is the Beginning ", " Absolute Candor ")

At Freecloud , Jurati manned the transporter while the others rescued Maddox from Bjayzl . However, after Maddox was in La Sirena 's sickbay , she turned off the hematic microrepair unit keeping him alive. When the ship's EMH , Emil , tried to intervene, Jurati deactivated him. ( PIC : " Stardust City Rag ")

Jurati was able to convince the others that Maddox died of the injuries Bjayzl and her cronies had inflicted, but she grew increasingly distressed. Needing a distraction and some company en route to The Artifact , Jurati had an intimate encounter with Captain Cristóbal Rios . ( PIC : " The Impossible Box ")

After La Sirena departed the Artifact, Rios discovered that they were being followed by Narek in a Romulan Snakehead . Jurati began to realize that Commodore Oh must have been working with the Romulans and the scout ship was following them because of her. Rios told her he suspected Raffi was the one being tracked, and Jurati could not bring herself to tell him about her situation before he was called away. Left alone in sickbay, Jurati injected herself with noranium hydride hoping it would neutralize the viridium tracker in her bloodstream , though this also sent her into a coma . ( PIC : " Nepenthe ")

Emil saved Jurati's life, and he and Raffi informed Picard about their suspicion that Jurati had killed Maddox. Upon waking up, Jurati was confronted by Picard, who declared she should turn herself in for the murder of Maddox once they reached Deep Space 12 . Jurati agreed and when prompted, told Picard about Oh forcing the Admonition on her and giving her the tracker and a directive to kill Maddox and Soji to prevent a repetition of the apocalypse Oh had seen in her vision. However, Jurati's resolve to go through with that mission had already been weakening, and once she met Soji in person, she decided that she would no longer carry out Oh's orders. Afterwards, Jurati gathered with the others to pool their knowledge of the situation and uncover the mystery surrounding Oh, the Zhat Vash , and the Attack on Mars . ( PIC : " Broken Pieces ")

Jurati traveled to Coppelius with the rest of the crew on La Sirena , though she thought they were still headed for DS12. When she arrived on the bridge with her bag packed, ready to turn herself in, she was delighted to find they were about to meet Soji's people instead. After the ship was drained of power by one of the orchids making up the planet's orbital defense and crash-landed on the surface, Jurati took care of Picard, who had fallen unconscious. Scanning him, she found the abnormality in his brain that meant he only had a short time left to live, prompting Picard to admit as much to the others.

Jurati joined the rest of the crew as they traveled first to the crashed Artifact, which Seven of Nine had piloted to Coppelius, and then to Coppelius Station . There, she met Dr. Altan Soong , son of Noonien Soong , and the synths he had created together with Bruce Maddox. They warned the synths they were about to be attacked by Oh's Romulan fleet. Jurati shared the Admonition with Sutra , the leader of the synths, who realized it was a message only a synthetic mind could decipher. While Rios and Raffi Musiker headed back to La Sirena to repair the ship, Jurati stayed behind with Picard, saying she wanted to help Soong finish some of Maddox's work.

When Soong and Sutra told their people that they were going to contact the extra-galactic Alliance of synthetic life who had created the Admonition, which in effect would mean the end of all organic life in the galaxy, Jurati convinced them she was on their side. While Sutra ordered for Picard to be put under house arrest, she allowed Jurati to continue working, ostensibly to help Soong transfer his mind into an artificial body, a golem , thus allowing him to be spared from the impending genocide. ( PIC : " Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1 ")

Instead of helping Soong, however, Jurati found a way to occupy him and broke out Picard. Together, they headed back to La Sirena , looking for the others, but they found the ship deserted. Picard and Jurati discussed their next steps and decided they needed to stall the Romulan fleet until Starfleet coul catch up with them. Picard also wanted to set an example to the synths by protecting them, so they would reconsider their plan to exterminate all organic life in the galaxy. Picard managed to fly La Sirena into orbit, just as the Romulan fleet arrived, and Agnes used the fundamental field replicator to execute a version of the Picard Maneuver , projecting dozens of images of La Sirena into space as decoys. After Starfleet arrived and Picard managed to convince Soji to power down the beacon, proving she was not the threat the Romulans believed her to be, the standoff was resolved and the Romulan Fleet left, escorted by Starfleet.

Picard collapsed, and Soji beamed him and Jurati down to the surface, where Picard died of his neurological disease. Just before he passed away, however, Jurati, working with Soong and Soji, was able to transfer Picard's consciousness into the golem originally built for Soong himself. When Picard, Rios, and the crew they assembled along the way left Coppelius some time later aboard La Sirena , Jurati was with them, sharing a kiss with Rios on the bridge. ( PIC : " Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2 ")

Joining the Stargazer crew [ ]

By the year 2401 , two years after the Coppelius incident, Jurati had been acquitted of the murder of Dr. Maddox due to "alien-induced temporary insanity." Her romantic relationship with Rios had also ended, but the two remained friendly, despite some awkwardness.

While on Raritan IV with Soji, Jurati was summoned by Rios, now captain of the USS Stargazer , for assistance in deciphering an unknown signal coming from a spatial anomaly. After she decoded the signal, it was revealed that it was an urgent message requesting Picard's presence and an appeal to join the Federation . When Picard arrived, a Borg vessel emerged from the anomaly and a Borg Queen beamed onto the bridge of the Stargazer and began to assimilate the ship. In order to prevent the ship from falling into the hands of the Borg, Picard initiated a self-destruct sequence , which moments later destroyed the vessel and seemingly everyone onboard. ( PIC : " The Star Gazer ")

Miraculously, after the explosion, Jurati woke up in a laboratory on Earth being greeted by a talking virtual pet cat . Unbeknownst to her, Q had created an alternate timeline and replaced the alternate version of Jurati with the Jurati from the prime timeline as part of his ongoing trial of Humanity .

With the assistance of that timeline's Borg Queen, Jurati joined Picard and the others as the time traveled into the past aboard the CSS La Sirena .

Agnes Jurati is assimilated

Agnes is assimilated.

After arriving in the early 21st century , Jurati was assimilated by the Borg Queen, as she attempted to use Jurati to gain a 400 year advantage on the galaxy. ( PIC : " Fly Me to the Moon ", " Two of One ", " Monsters ")

Jurati and the Borg Queen would eventually agree to share Jurati's body and create a new Borg Collective that would not forcefully assimilate people and would embrace the distinctiveness and individuality of its members. Now together as one, she left Earth aboard the CSS La Sirena and traveled to the Delta Quadrant . ( PIC : " Hide and Seek ")

Queen of the Borg [ ]

In 2401 , the Borg contacted the Federation, claiming to want to join it. Unbeknownst at the time, the evolved Jurati/Borg Queen, who was clearly different than was previously encountered beamed aboard the USS Stargazer and began assimilating the ship and its fleet. In response, Jean-Luc Picard activated the Stargazer 's auto-destruct , stopping the assimilation and destroying the vessel. ( PIC : " The Star Gazer ")

In an alternate timeline where Picard self-destructed the USS Stargazer , Agnes, as the Borg Queen, was killed in the explosion. ( PIC : " The Star Gazer ") This timeline was averted when Q returned Picard's crew to moments before the explosion and Picard cancelled the self-destruct upon realizing that the Borg Queen was actually Agnes. ( PIC : " Farewell ")

Borg Queen Jurati, 2401

Jurati returns as the Borg Queen.

Upon returning from 2024 moments before the explosion, Picard canceled the auto-destruct and allowed the Borg Queen to proceed after realizing that it was the same Queen from an alternate timeline who had merged with Dr. Jurati.

The Borg Queen revealed that a powerful energy wave was approaching and she needed the shields of the fleet combined with that of her own ship to block it. This Borg Queen had come to Picard both because he was someone in charge with whom she shared a mutual trust and because they needed the help of a friend. The Borg Queen's efforts were successful, saving countless lives, although she didn't know who was behind the creation of the massive transwarp conduit aside from it being a threat that required close observation. Picard agreed to grant the Borg provisional membership in the Federation so that they could remain there, "the Guardian at the Gates." ( PIC : " Farewell ")

Personal life [ ]

Dr. Jurati was a leading academic in her field. When she was bored during the early days of her journey on La Sirena , she read through two years of back-issues of the Journal of Theoretical Cybernetics , "including the Festschrift for Professor Kwok ", proving she was a voracious reader. She also remarked that her father had read many paper books when she was a child, and she had used to annoy him about it. ( PIC : " Absolute Candor ")

Like Picard, Jurati was fond of Earl Grey tea . She enjoyed Kasseelian opera , sushi , and red velvet cake . However, the concept of baking cookies from scratch was somewhat foreign to her. ( PIC : " Maps and Legends ", " The End is the Beginning ", " Stardust City Rag ", " Broken Pieces ")

Before joining Picard on his quest, Jurati told Commodore Oh that she had never been off-world, implying she left Starfleet Academy to join Maddox at the Daystrom Institute before she ever got substantial space flight training. When she did spend some time in space, she found it to be boring, later saying " it's cold and empty and wants to kill you. " ( PIC : " Nepenthe ", " Absolute Candor ", " The Impossible Box ")

After she saved his life in the Romulan attack on the Château, Jurati told Picard she was a "terrible liar". Towards the end of their adventure, however, after she manipulated Soong and managed to free Picard from his house arrest, she had changed her mind: " I honestly thought I was the worst secret agent ever, but I'm starting to believe I may have a gift. " ( PIC : " The End is the Beginning ", " Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2 ") Something else Jurati considered a gift (somewhat jokingly) was her ability to sense when she was about to make a mistake. She called it a "superpower", though she agreed with Rios it was not a particularly useful one. ( PIC : " The Impossible Box ")

Jurati could be very talkative and often made witty comments. By 2401 , this had turned into a habit to babble when she was nervous, which could get her into trouble. However, she was also quick-witted enough to talk herself out of trouble again. ( PIC : " Absolute Candor ", " Penance ")

Relationships [ ]

Jurati developed friendships with the people she met on her mission with Picard. Although she had been manipulated into joining them under false pretenses, especially Raffi Musiker and Cristóbal Rios continued to be kind to her after they discovered the truth. By 2401, Jurati had a close relationship and easy rapport with Soji, whom she had told not to let her drunkenly call her ex. She happily greeted Seven of Nine from the bridge of the Stargazer , and she gave Elnor a delighted hug when they reunited in the dystopian alternate reality. Jurati also developed a strong friendship with Picard, often affectionately calling him "Mister". ( PIC : " Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1 ", " The Star Gazer ", " Penance ", " Assimilation ")

Over the course of their time together on La Sirena , Jurati developed a romantic relationship with Cristóbal Rios . The two shared a lot of light-hearted banter, but also grew closer when Jurati was starting to feel the weight of her secret mission. After she killed Maddox, Jurati happened upon Rios practicing soccer late at night. After some conversation, the two started kissing and were about to go off to sleep together, but Jurati pulled back because she felt like she was about to make a mistake. When Rios continued to be kind and understanding, however, she opened up to him about feeling hollow and lonely, and they decided to sleep together after all, since it might at least help her for the night. ( PIC : " Absolute Candor ", " Stardust City Rag ", " The Impossible Box ")

When Sutra tried to mindmeld with Jurati on Coppelius to learn more about the Admonition, Rios tried to stop her, since he worried about the trauma the vision had caused Jurati. Later, when he told Jurati he was headed back to the ship with Raffi, he continued to be deeply concerned about her, and the two shared a tender moment. A while later, when they were getting ready to leave Coppelius, Jurati and Rios kissed on the bridge of La Sirena , while the rest of the crew was still occupied elsewhere. ( PIC : " Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1 ", " Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2 ")

The relationship with Rios ended after less than a year, just like all of Jurati's past intimate relationships had. Nevertheless, and despite their occasional bickering, the two remained friendly and Rios was deeply concerned for Jurati when she was behaving strangely after letting herself be assimilated by the Borg Queen. ( PIC : " The Star Gazer ", " Penance ", " Two of One ")

Memorable quotes [ ]

" How can I help you? " " You can tell me if it is possible to make a sentient android out of flesh and blood. " (Jurati laughs) " No, really. How can I… Is that why you've come here? " " It is. " " Even before the ban, that was… Well… W-Well a flesh and blood android was in our sights, but a sentient one? Not for a thousand years. " " That makes it even more curious that recently, I had tea with one. "

" So... space turns out to be super boring. Go figure. " " What were you expecting? " " I don't know. It's so... empty. I mean, of course, right? It's right there in the name. 'Space.' It's not like it's called 'vast quantities of stuff.' Although, come to think of it, there are over three billion stars in our galaxy alone and ours is one of two trillion. There are a septillion known planets, so maybe it should be called 'vast quantities of stuff.' Like, why focus on the negative? "

Jurati was played by Alison Pill .

She was the only character besides Jean-Luc Picard to appear in every episode of the first and second seasons of the series.

Early in the character's development, Dr. Jurati was named "Dr. Sarton," after a roboticist in the Isaac Asimov novel The Caves of Steel . [1]

The Borg Queen is in-fact, not the leader of the collective per say, as the collective can, has and does function completely without her intervention and presence. The Queen acts as more as a high level adviser with nigh to absolute control over the collective in times of necessity.

The Queen is typically housed in the Unicomplex, where she coordinates and controls the entire Borg Collective. When direct intervention may be neccesary or there's a risk of a potential loss of communications is a factor, the Borg Queen is capable of leaving the Unicomplex entirely. Despite typically traveling in a Diamond class vessel she has also travelled on a variety of other ship classes such as: a Cube and Sphere class.

The Borg Queen joined the Collective at a very early stage during their initial rise to power around the year 1778 at the age of 7 or 8. Originating from Species 125.

Function [ ]

Whilst drones show no emotion, the Queen herself does. This emphasises her role in the collective a she an intermediary between the unrelentingly logical and efficiency driven approach of the hive mind and a less rational, more emotional and creative approach to problem solving. When necessary she would employ psychological tactics, like extortion, bluffing, seduction, plain intimidation and in rare cases even diplomacy to get what she wanted. Not stopping at commanding infected vessels to self-destruct on a whim without hesitation and with absolutely no remorse for loss of life. (ST:V "Unimatrix Zero")

The Collectives typical direct confrontational routine of assaulting, analysing, inevitably adapting and overpowering their target (st:tng bobw) is overridden during crucial situations in which their direct approach has previously failed or might potentially fail. At this point the Borg Queen assumes direct control over every element of the encounter, from coordinating the drones, ships and tactics involved in the encounter to calling in reinforcements and in rare cases she has even been known to resort to diplomacy. (swv:scorpion, dark frontier)

Physiology [ ]

The Queen's skull and spinal chord have been completely replaced by technological replacements, protecting and enhancing cognitive capabilities and drastically increasing the speed at which the brain signals are sent and received. The tritanium skull houses her large, superior brain capable of limitless multi-tasking, inconvievably complex calculations and capable of easily coordinating the entire population of the Collective with relative effortlessness. The components also are capable of maintaining brain activity even after the loss of the organic tissue and is capable of withstanding warpcore plasma coolant, the spinal chord is however very fragile and may be torn apart by hand.

Whilst concentrating on coordinating the Collective the Queen is interpreted directly in-to the computer core, further increasing her coordinative efforts within the Collective. She is however unable to communicate in this form and thus must be intergrated in-to a body in order to communicate with other species personally, typically verbally. Whilst intergrated in-to a body she is succeptable to being distracted and damaged and can not tap directly in-to the corical array of other drones to see through them, thus she is often required to use holographic viewscreens for observational purposes.

Theoretical Clarification [ ]

"The Borg Queen is in-fact, not the leader of the collective per say, as the collective can, has and does function completely without her intervention and presence. The Queen acts as more as a high level adviser with nigh to absolute control over the collective in times of necessity."

This has been concluded as a result of a number of canon facts and additionally Picard's comments during First Contact.

  • Firstly, the Queen herself said she originated from species 125. So at the very least we know for certain that 124 species were assimilated in to the collective without her direct control meaning it has functioned as it does now in some way, shape or form prior to her "reign" as Queen. Leaving us with two options: either the Borg operated without a Queen prior to the assimilation of species 125 or there was a Queen prior to the current Queen.
  • Secondly, Picard's comments that she intended him to "bridge the gap between humanity and the Borg" and act as a "counterpart" indicates he would have become an entity within th collective Wirth equal power to her own. A Borg King? Meaning that at the very least it is confirmed to be possible to have more than one commanding entity in the collective at any one time, sharing power equally thus making the presumption she is not the hard-coded, unchangable, irreplacable, one and only absolute supreme controller of the collective seem vastly more canon.
  • Thirdly with the death of the Borg Queen during first contact the collective in the should be essentially leaderless. Had she been the one and only Queen, that would mean that in the events following first contact such as Scorpion and Endgame the Borg should either be extinct, in disarray or be without a Queen. As we've seen this isn't the case we can only conclude the Queen is a replaceable entity and the existence of the hive mind is not entirely dependent upon her involvement.

Respecting Canon and Perfect Organisms: ‘Star Trek: Picard’s Borg Queen

The Borg Queen made a big impression from the first time we met her in Star Trek: First Contact , where she was played by Alice Krige . Subsequent appearances by the Borg Queen had her played by Krige again but also by Susanna Thompson  (on Star Trek: Voyager ), as we learned there was more than one version of the Queen. Now, she has returned once more on Star Trek: Picard , with Annie Wersching ( 24 , Runaways ) — who’d previously played  Liana  in the  Star Trek: Enterprise   Season 1  episode “ Oasis ”  — taking over the role.

Wersching was on hand at WonderCon this past weekend, joined by Picard’s James Mackinnon (Makeup Designer and Department Head of Prosthetics) and Neville Page (Senior Creative Designer) for a panel focused on how the Picard team approached reinterpreting this iconic Trek villain.

PAST AND FUTURE

star trek wiki borg queen

Page said that when it comes to designing anything for an established franchise based on previous work, “You have to be mindful of the legacy. Those of you who are familiar with the Borg Queen know that she has a significant place in Star Trek , so there’s going to be a major legacy and canon to be mindful of.” Page added he felt “You’re obligated to refresh, whatever that may mean, but absolutely respect the canon.”

Given the Borg Queen’s previous appearances, Page remarked, “I don’t want someone to look at our Queen and not recognize her as the Queen. So you start to get familiar with what makes the Queen.” Page ultimately observed, “There’s this thing that’s on her head that sort of defines her beyond just the necrotizing flesh and decay she’s going through. That’s an interesting juxtaposition. So there’s this element on the back of her head, so I thought, okay, we can work with that and possibly turn it into something special.” In fact, Page would call that headpiece her crown, which is only fitting given she is, after all, a Queen.

As far as her performance goes and following the previous actresses who played the role, Wersching noted it all goes back to Krige, with the crowd applauding as she declared, “For starters, all hail the Queen to Alice, right?”

Recalled Wersching, “Before I booked the job, when I was first putting myself on tape and kind of figured out that maybe it was the Borg Queen that I was auditioning for — because I didn’t really know! — I watched First Contact. Then, once I got the role, I just watched all things Borg , even random things on YouTube that were like ‘The History of the Borg.’”

That being said, Wersching noted, “I didn’t watch Alice and Susanna and completely study them and try to mimic them or anything like that. I watched them and let it in there but then I never once was thinking about them when I was performing. I wanted to learn [the history] and then do my own take on it. “

“I NEEDED YOUR SKULL IN MY COMPUTER”

star trek wiki borg queen

During the development process, Page noted they spent a lot of time with different potential designs, asking, “Is this too much? Is this too little? We were playing with costume ideas at the same time because we wanted to get a sense of the cohesiveness of the Queen.”

The key crucial missing ingredient for quite some time though was Wersching, since she would be needed for the final designs to be implemented. Page recalled the period in which Wersching was on everyone’s radar for the role but hadn’t signed on yet, amusingly recalling thinking, “Give me her face! We need Annie.” The process required Wersching to be digitally scanned, before a 3D printing of her head was done to experiment with how the prosthetics would actually work, and Page turned to Wersching as he explained, “I was dying to have Annie’s head in my computer. I needed your skull in my computer.”

Page in fact had high praise for Wersching’s head – literally, as he said, “The Queen is so symmetrical and Annie, your head is so symmetrical. Once we had Annie’s head and I assessed that she’s the perfect organism, we then printed her out.”

The Borg Queen has no legs on Star Trek: Picard , but at one point, they considered not giving her arms either. Though Wersching had to spend a lot of time in a harness, Page said they always kept the actor’s comfort in mind in terms of how restrictive things might get making the show, recalling speaking with the writers and discussing, “How is Annie going to do anything? Even just the issue of what if she has to eat or go to the bathroom? All the logistics of standing inside of this thing, and you’re handcuffed, all were playing a factor of the practical plus the desired narrative. You just come up with what the appropriate balance is.”

FINAL TOUCHES

star trek wiki borg queen

Even after Wersching was cast, a lot of specifics needed to be worked out, with Mackinnon noting, “it takes a little while because we are figuring out color placement and making sure we have everything in the right spot.” That included making decisions on how much of Wersching would be covered up in makeup or not, down to whether her freckles would be part of the Borg Queen design. As Mackinnon put it, “A lot of alien makeup gets a little too thick and a little too heavy on the face. We wanted to make sure that we used her face, we used her beautiful structure, and not cover her all in silicone.”

And yes, ultimately, “We brought her freckles onto the prosthetic instead of covering those. And I think it worked really, really well. So there was a freckle treatment at the end!”

On top of that, in terms of looking at previous versions of the Borg Queen, Mackinnon noted, “There’s a little marbling on the side. I was lucky enough to be able to work on Star Trek: First Contact, so watching Scott Wheeler do the Borg Queen from that movie, I saw that marbling and I brought that with me on this.”

Even after filming with the final design had begun, Mackinnon explained, “There’s a lot of changes that happen throughout and I probably change the makeup every day a little bit differently though you guys will never see it. One, it makes it faster, two, it makes it better, and three, I go to set and see that the lights and colors that they use change the makeup.”

Wersching was in the makeup for incredibly long days – up to 16-18 hours – and said, “I’m not gonna lie… In the very, very beginning, I was a little bit like, ‘What did I get myself into?’ But it was pretty interesting how quickly I just really enjoyed the process, for whatever reason.”

After Wersching joked, “I really didn’t have to do much because I looked so cool,” Mackinnon remarked, “We can’t do it without you and you can’t do it without us. You have a combination when it comes together. There’s moments when I’m doing your makeup and I can see you change into that character, and it’s a great moment because you start kind of talking to me a little bit different, in character. So I know I’ve done my job well.”

Wersching had to arrive to work much earlier than her castmates due to her makeup and prosthetics and then leave after them and observed, “The interesting thing is that most of these people never ever saw me with just my normal face. Legitimately, because I would get there at 4:00 and they would get there at 7:00. I remember at Star Trek Day, Patrick [Stewart] was there in the green room. And I went up and said hi and he was just looking at me. I said, “I’m Annie. I’m the Borg Queen!” He was in shock! ‘Our Borg Queen!?’ Because he never, ever, ever saw me not looking like that.”

“It was a very different feel for the character.”

'Lower Decks' finally resolves a huge Star Trek villain mystery [Exclusive]

There is only one Borg Queen. Or are there several? First introduced in the 1996 film Star Trek: First Contact , the enigmatic leader of the Borg seemed to transcend time and space. She also represents a paradox: A single person speaking for an entire hivemind collective.

Played first by Alice Krige, there are now three Borg Queens in total. Susanna Thompson took on the role in several episodes of Voyager ; and in Picard Season 2 , another Borg Queen will be played by Annie Wersching.

But who is the “real” Borg Queen? In a recent surprising (and hilarious) cameo in Lower Decks , the answer seems to be that the original Borg Queen is still the canonical one — at least during Starfleet training simulations!

To get to the bottom of this classic Star Trek mystery, we spoke to the Borg Queen herself. Here’s what Alice Krige had to say about her surprise return to the Star Trek canon and why she thinks her character is always there, even when you don’t see her.

LAS VEGAS, NV - AUGUST 12: Actress Alice Krige participates in the 11th Annual Official Star Trek ...

Alice Krige at the 11th Annual Official Star Trek Convention in 2021.

In Lower Decks, Season 2, Episode 8, “I, Excretus,” Boimler ( Jack Quaid) finds himself in a holographic drill where he has to do everything he can to “resit the Borg.” After obsessively running the drill over and over, Boimler meets a holographic recreation of the Borg Queen. Cue an Easter egg from First Contact.

The Borg Queen blows gently on Boimler’s skin, referencing something similar she did to Data when his android skin was briefly grafted with human skin. It’s a hilarious scene, and all-to-brief, but there’s a degree of Trekkie legitimacy brought to it because it really is the voice of Alice Krige.

The original Borg Queen tells Inverse she never expected to return to Star Trek, especially not like this.

“They just, they just called and asked if I would do it. It was great fun,” Krige says, revealing she recorded most of her dialogue in her husband’s closet. “It has the best sound in the house. It’s so full of clothing, plenty of insulation.”

star trek wiki borg queen

Boimler (Jack Quaid) prepares to be assimilated by the Borg Queen (Alice Krige).

This isn’t the first time since First Contact that Krige has returned to her famous Star Trek role. When the Borg Queen initially crashed the Voyager party for the episode “Dark Frontier,” she was not played by Krige, but instead by Susanna Thompson (perhaps more famous for her role as Lenara Kahn in the DS9 episode “Rejoined.) But when it was time for Voyager’s big finale, Krige was asked once again to don her Borg leather. This put her in the unique position of being one of the few Star Trek villains (Q is another) who have tangoed with both Captain Picard and Captain Janeway.

Krige says that when she returned for Voyager , she realized she’d based much of her performance on the Borg Queen’s attempts to seduce Next Generation ’s leading men.

“There's sexual energy that she kind of manipulated both Data and Picard,” Krige says. “Well, she didn't manipulate either of them, but she thought she was. So I had to decide how to play that in Voyager because instead of two men this was two women [Janeway and Seven of Nine.]”

This led Krige to a quick phone call with “the producers” of Voyager , in which it was decided the Borg Queen was “Omnisexual,” which meant, yes, she would probably have some kind of flirtation with Janeway or Seven, too, if she wanted to.

“After that, I thought great . I just went and had a great time because they're two wonderful actresses,” Krige tells Inverse . “It was a very different feel for the character because it was a very different sort of energetic exchange.”

A time-traveling Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the Borg Queen (Alice Krige)

It’s been exactly 20 years since Krige last played the Borg Queen in Voyager, and because she perished in that episode and we also saw Picard take her out in First Contact , fans have wondered for years just how many copies of the Borg Queen there are, or if the Queens are actually different characters.

With Annie Wersching’s Borg Queen coming to Picard Season 2 and Alice Krige’s delightful return to Lower Decks , could there ever be a meeting of all these Borg Queens? How does she keep coming back? Alice Krige isn’t sure, but she wouldn’t rule out a live-action return.

“She manifests in many different ways, or maybe she doesn't?” Krige says playfully. “Even if she’s not there, it doesn't mean she's not there . She’s so mysterious and endlessly interesting. Who knows how she shows up?”

Star Trek Prequel Overtakes Star Trek 4, X-Men Producer Simon Kinberg Taking Over Next Movie [UPDATED]

Star trek’s 3 efrosians in movies & discovery explained, star trek's new warp drive breaks the prime directive in a way no-one expected.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Picard Season 1, Episode 6

Star Trek: Picard episode 6 revealed new Borg technology that explains how the Borg Queen manages to escape each time she's defeated. Kicking off the second half Star Trek: Picard season 1, Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) finally came face-to-face with Soji Asha (Isa Briones), the synthetic daughter of the late Commander Data (Brent Spiner). Unfortunately for the Starfleet legend, to find Soji, Picard had to confront his greatest fear by traveling to the Artifact, the Borg Cube under the control of the Romulans . Aboard the Artifact, Jean-Luc rediscovered a secret about the Borg Queen that he once knew when he was assimilated and turned into Locutus of Borg.

The existence of the Borg Queen was discovered by Magnus and Erin Hansen, the parents of Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), but the Hansen family was assimilated before they could transmit their data to Starfleet. Trekkers met the Borg Queen (Alice Krige) for the first time in Star Trek: First Contact when the Borg attempted to assimilate Earth in 2063, before they were stopped by Captain Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise-E. Picard and Data teamed up to kill the Borg Queen but she reappeared on Star Trek: Voyager , albeit with a different organic form (portrayed by Susanna Thompson). The Borg Queen tangled with the U.S.S. Voyager's Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) on a few occasions, usually over whether Seven of Nine would be able to retain her reclaimed humanity. In Star Trek: Voyager 's series finale, "Endgame", a future version of Admiral Janeway tricked the Borg Queen and infected her with a neurolytic pathogen, which spread to the Collective. The Borg complex Unimatrix One was destroyed as the U.S.S. Voyager returned to Earth using a transwarp hub - this was the last time the Borg Queen was seen in Star Trek canon.

Related: Star Trek: Picard Subtly Used Voyager's Theme Perfectly

While Trekkers saw the Borg Queen die in "Endgame", she also perished in Star Trek: First Contact - yet the Queen manages to keep returning. While all of the Borg Queen's secrets haven't been revealed, she doesn't seem limited to her physical form and can manifest across the Collective at will - or possibly, a version of the Borg Queen exists in every Borg vessel to "bring order to chaos" . Regardless, Star Trek: Picard unveiled one of the Borg Queen's many tricks: When Picard and Soji were fleeing the Romulans aboard the Artifact, Hugh (Jonathan Del Arco), Jean-Luc's old friend from Star Trek: The Next Generation who is now the executive director of the Romulan Reclamation Project, brought them to a hidden room within the Cube. Picard recalled this place as the Queen's Cell, which contained a device called a spacial trajector, i.e. a transporter with a theoretical range of 40,000 lightyears. This is technology the Borg assimilated from the Sikarians of the Delta Quadrant, a race introduced on Star Trek: Voyager .

Picard and Soji used the spacial trajector to jump away from the Artifact, which exists for the Borg Queen alone to make a quick escape. If, in fact, there was a Borg Queen aboard the Artifact when it suffered a submatrix collapse , it's possible she used her secret transporter to flee the Cube before it was permanently severed from the Collective. The Borg Queen would find it necessary to do so, or else her physical form would have remained trapped in the Cube, and therefore the Romulans could have been able to reclaim organic parts of the Borg Queen herself and harvest her technology  when they took possession of the Artifact.

It's not clear whether the Borg Queen will appear again in an upcoming Star Trek series (or movie) but the invention of the spacial trajector answers one question about how the Borg's leader manages to travel from place to place. Even though the Borg Queen seems to be able to manifest at any point in the Collective at will, it's possible there is a secret Queen's Cell containing a spacial trajector in every Borg vessel. This would point to the Borg Queen realizing that there would be situations where she would need an emergency escape to prevent her unique technology from being captured. It's quite possible this was the scenario the Borg Queen was faced with when the Artifact fell into Romulan hands in the years before Star Trek: Picard began.

Summary [ ]

While the "Hive Mind" of the Borg Collective went around the universe assimilating thousands of species into a Collective Hive Mind the Borg Queen was a focal Queen Bee of the Borg Transwarp Collective, which enabled the Borg to travel anywhere in space. Unlike the Borg drones , the Queen consisted of a head and torso with synthetic arms and legs. Four times the Borg Queen has been in conflict with the United Federation of Planets but failed each time:

  • Star Trek: First Contact" [Movie] The Borg Queen almost succeeds in assimilating Lt Commander Data; however Data - at the cost of his Semi Human Skin destroys the Borg Queen and allows Humanity to explore space using Vulcan technology.
  • Star Trek:Yoyager episode "Dark Frontier" where the Borg Queen tries to assimilate Seven of Nine into the collective again but fails
  • Star Trek: Yoyager episode "Unimatrix 1 and 2" Captain Janeway, Tuvok, et all allow themselves to be assimilated into Borg in order to start a resistance movement against the Borg..in which the Borg drones assert being individuals--instead of being a mindless collective: the Borg Queen destroyes the "infected" Borg Qube but Janeway and the others escape.
  • Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Endgame 1 and 2" a future [33 years later] version of Captain [Now Admiral] Janeway travels back in time to Voyager in order to get the missing ship home faster; in the process Admiral Janeway is assimilated by the Borg; however she has infected herself with a pathogean deadly to the Borg Queen which causes her body to separate from her artificial limbs causing Voyager to escape within a Borg Spere [the Borg Queen and the Future Admiral Janeway are killed; while the transwarp selfdestructs]. Voyager destroys the Spere & returns home after missing for 7 years [ 2 years more out of its regular 5 year mission.]

Borg Triva [ ]

  • In "Star Trek The Next Generations" "Parrell" the Borg have assimilated the United Federation of Planets
  • By the time of "Star Trek:Voyager", the Borg have assimilated 10,026 species [Humans are species number 5618];The only exception to assimilation are races either too primitive to assimilate (who are ignored) or races too dangerous to assimilate (who are destroyed).
  • Despite their ability to adapt to various attempts to destroy them, the Borg can be defeated several ways:
  • Commander Data linked with the assimilated "Loctus of Borg" ( Jean-Luc Picard ) and sends a command that starts the Borg regeneration sequence and effectively put them all to sleep; the command caused the Borg power net to feed back on itself and triggered a self-destruct sequence in The Best of Both Worlds,
  • Data and La Forge came up with an invasive program designed as a geometric form that could not actually exist in physical space. In the Borg collective memory each step to understand the program would start anomalous solutions that would interact with each other, resulting in an endless, unsolvable puzzle. Eventually, the Borg neural network would collapse under the strain of attempting to solve the paradox , resulting in a total system failure across the entire Collective in I Borg,
  • A Borg experiences being an individual; this is so dangerous that the Borg Queen will destroy an entire Borg Square/or Sphere if even a hint of individuality is about to form in one Borg."I Borg"; "Unimatrix 1 and 2" and "Endgame".
  • Species 6339 developed a synthetic pathogen so that when they were assimilated by the Borg, it would be spread to the Borg vinculum. From there, it caused all drones within range to experience the Borg equivalent of multiple personality disorder , eventually leading to their self-destruction. The process would be repeated when another Borg vessel retrieved the vinculum , and so on in "Infinate Regress",
  • Future Admiral Kathryn Janeway had herself injected with a neurolytic pathogen and allowed herself to be assimilated by the Borg Queen who in turn self-destructed " along with The Borg transwarp complex and many Borg Spheres. "Endgame",
  • 1 Dr. Lane Hunter (The Resident)
  • 2 Sheila Porter (Law & Order: SVU)
  • 3 Lina (Female Special Police Officer)

Im Glad Star Trek: First Contact Didnt Ruin The Borg On Voyager

  • Star Trek: First Contact's Borg Queen death nearly made Voyager omit the Borg altogether, but the show still managed to incorporate them.
  • Voyager's creative team debated the impact of the Borg Queen's death, but ultimately expanded Borg lore in the series.
  • Voyager's later seasons thrived with Borg involvement, enhancing the show's villains, adding new characters like Seven of Nine, and evolving Borg storylines.

Star Trek: First Contact 's events almost stopped the Borg from appearing in Star Trek: Voyager , but luckily, the show was still able to use the Borg in later seasons. First Contact premiered during the airing of Voyager season 3 and was one of the more well-received movies focusing on the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation . The film heavily centered on the Borg, focusing on Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and crew traveling back in time to the birth of the Federation and introducing the Borg Queen (Alice Krige) into Star Trek lore.

Although the Borg Queen was one of First Contact 's more controversial additions, she also served as a great singular film villain where the Borg as a whole might have fallen flat . Her interactions with both Captain Picard and Data (Brent Spiner) during First Contact produced some of the most memorable scenes from all the Star Trek movies , and her defeat at the end of the film was a satisfying climactic moment. However, Picard and Data killing the Borg Queen in First Contact nearly had devastating consequences for Voyager .

Star Trek: Voyager Cast & Character Guide

In its seven seasons, Star Trek: Voyager introduced many new faces to the Trek universe. Here is a breakdown of the show's main cast and characters.

Star Trek: First Contacts Borg Queen Death Almost Ruined The Borg On Voyager

The borg question after first contact divided star trek's creative team.

Voyager 's creative team had planned to introduce the Borg as a major enemy in later seasons, but the death of the Queen in First Contact nearly stopped the Borg from ever appearing in the franchise again. Because First Contact established the Queen as the Borg's great unifier, killing her sparked debate about whether the Borg would cease to exist once she was gone . Some of Star Trek 's writers and producers, including Ronald D. Moore, felt that the Borg Queen's death should be the end of any more Borg involvement in the franchise.

Voyager ended up establishing much more history for the Borg Queen, including that the Borg could create a new Queen when the old one died.

Moore's argument makes sense logically, but it was eventually decided that the Queen's death wouldn't preclude the possibility of more Borg somewhere, especially in the Delta Quadrant where Voyager took place . Voyager ended up establishing much more history for the Borg Queen , including that the Borg could create a new Queen when the old one died. The show's series finale even implied that there could even be multiple Queens at a time. It was ultimately a good thing that Voyager was able to incorporate the Borg into later seasons, given how important they came to be on the show.

Star Trek: Voyager Season 4-7 Would Have Been Worse Without The Borg

Voyager without the borg wouldn't have made sense.

Star Trek: Voyager 's later seasons would have been unequivocally worse without the Borg involved. In its early seasons, Voyager struggled to create good Star Trek villains for the crew to face off against, but bringing in the Borg alleviated this probably completely. Voyager 's setting in the Delta Quadrant allowed the crew to meet the Borg on their home turf, and the show added so much to the Borg's backstory and lore , thanks to the inclusion of a new Borg Queen (Susanna Thompson) and the introduction of a significant character in season 4.

Along with becoming the series' main villain, the Borg enabled the character of Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) to be added to Voyager 's main cast. Although she was initially brought on for sex appeal, Seven's characterization and story arcs allowed her to become one of Voyager 's most beloved characters , and she has gone on to play a major role in other parts of the franchise like Star Trek: Picard . Given her continued importance, losing the possibility of ever introducing Seven would have been a devastating blow for the franchise if Star Trek: Voyager hadn't been allowed to use the Borg.
