Key art for Star Trek: Resurgence featuring the game’s logo.

There was a time when you couldn’t turn around without tripping over a game set in the Star Trek universe, but those games slowly fell out of style in the wake of the Enterprise TV series. Games like Star Trek : Timelines and Star Trek Online have been filling that void somewhat, but Star Trek: Resurgence aims to provide a more substantial, narrative-driven entry than what’s offered by current Trek titles. Resurgence releases on May 23 for PlayStation 5 , Windows , and Xbox Series X .

Star Trek: Resurgence is being developed by Dramatic Labs, a studio formed by several Telltale Games veterans, and it clearly draws from their experience crafting dramatic stories shaped by player choice. Resurgence takes place after Star Trek: The Next Generation , but additional details regarding the story have been sparse.

A gameplay screenshot of Star Trek: Resurgence featuring Jara Rydek.

We do know that the story follows two characters stationed on the U.S.S. Resolute. First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineer Carter Diaz provide contrasting viewpoints of life on board a Starfleet vessel.

A screenshot of gameplay from Star Trek: Resurgence featuring Carter Diaz

While Resurgence is sure to feature its fair share of phasers and photon torpedoes, it appears to be revisiting a grand tradition of narrative-driven adventure games set in the Star Trek franchise. Past Star Trek games like Judgment Rites , Hidden Evil , and Star Trek: The Next Generation – A Final Unity did a great job of capturing the essence of Star Trek without needing to lean on non-stop action to keep players invested.

Given the variety of takes we’ve seen with new Star Trek media in recent years, I’m excited to see where Dramatic Labs takes the franchise when Star Trek: Resurgence launches next month.

Star Trek: Infinite announced for fall 2023 release on PC and Mac

Paradox Interactive, the famed maker of Europa Universalis , Hearts of Iron , Crusader Kings , and other games in the grand strategy genre, announced today Star Trek: Infinite — a strategy title aiming for a fall 2023 release on PC and MacOS and set in the decades before Star Trek: The Next Generation .

The game’s press release notes players “will run an entire fleet within the Star Trek universe,” and players will “command one of four major powers in the galaxy: the United Federation of Planets, Romulan Star Empire, Cardassian Union, or Klingon Empire.” Each faction has “individualized traits, stories, quests, and more to make their play feel distinct.” The developer promises more information during Captain Picard Day on June 16 .

A short trailer accompanied the announcement and showcased a fleet of Federation ships encountering a Borg Cube. You can check out the official teaser trailer below.

“It is an honor to bring one of entertainment’s most iconic properties to life for our players and Star Trek’s multigenerational fanbase,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “We know how much this franchise means to fans all over the world, and we are working closely with Nimble Giant and Paramount Consumer Products to create a faithful and fulfilling game that lives up to their expectations.”

Infinite is developed in collaboration with Nimble Giant Entertainment, a studio based in Argentina and responsible for titles such as 2021’s Hellbound and 2020’s Quantum League and Rocket Arena .

Star Trek: Resurgence , an interactive narrative adventure game set in the Next Generation era, finally has a release date.

Star Trek: Resurgence

Dramatic Labs announced the game arrives May 23 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. Originally set for a Spring 2022 release, Dramatic Labs is confident now to set a specific date. This is the first game from the publisher formed by a team of industry veterans, including twenty former Telltale developers that have worked on critically acclaimed narrative games such as The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series , and The Wolf Among Us .

The USS Resolute

Resurgence is set shortly after the events of Star Trek Nemesis and it is set on board the USS Resolute. It tells an original story with players assuming the role of two principal characters, First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz. Here is the official game synopsis:

A worker uprising threatens the tenuous peace between two alien civilizations, and Starfleet is forced to intervene. Players experience the conflict and larger mystery from two key perspectives. The U.S.S. RESOLUTE’s First Officer Jara Rydek is part of the diplomatic envoy led by Ambassador Spock that’s tasked with finding a resolution – and uncovering the ultimate source of this tense situation. Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz highlights how the mission plays out from the lower decks, caught up in the events in his own unique way. Throughout the gripping story, players can interact with the Star Trek universe like never before, with moments of authentic action and critical decisions that shape the broader narrative in subtle and unexpected ways.

Throughout the game, players will immerse themselves in the Star Trek universe, interacting with new and returning characters through a variety of dialogue and action gameplay to determine the course of the story. One of the key features of the game is players making choices that have important consequences for how the story progresses.

Looking good.

Will definitely check this out with our teens. I’ve been looking for something new to play with them on our gaming PCs.

Looks like they redesigned the ship, as evidenced by the comic adaptation. She’s got a deflector dish, where before it looked like a horrible backwards kit bash Franken-ship. Alright, I appreciate the attention to detail. I question the lack of fanfare though, and dropping the game in May when the new Zelda is going to be sucking up all of the attention.

100% on the zelda competition – but Zelda will suck the air out of the room for months

Soooo…the mission is to put down a labor uprising?

I guess we’ll see but if it is, that’s a bad look there

I’m hoping that the ethical dilemmas will click in quickly.

As in “Surely, there is more than what’s on the surface…”

Let’s see. i want definitely to play this game. You know, in today you could use this medium to tell some stories, too. i am currently playing CP2077 and feels like some “Strange Days 2” (Strange Days 1995) from Kathryn Bigelow. I know that they do not have so many Budget. But it is possible

Looking forward to this. Can someone tell me, if it’s still that case, that Epic exclusive games usually arrive on Steam about a year later?

That would be disappointing. And pretty daft marketing.

It says PC release is coming in May, so I had assumed that would include Steam. We hesitate to install outside that platform.

As an aside, the gaming market is one of the key ways to drive teens to a franchise. It’s not just licensing for more revenue. It’s licensing to build demand for the original television and film content.

This is all the more so because GenZ were so physically isolated by COVID and are all the more socially engaged through their gaming and related chat groups. One of our teens got into SW this way.

Resurgence doesn’t look to be massively multiplayer, but it may still be able to match up with one player cooperatively. These kinds of things have a place in the dynamic.

Star Trek Online is at a point of maturity where it can be intimidating to get into and hard to find a group of younger players to team with.

Kurtzman and Paramount really need to think about finding a licensing partner that can create a popular massively multiplayer game for the younger crowd.

I tried to play STO, really couldn’t get into it. (Plus parts of the storylines made me mad, like the Dominion one.) I ended up settling for Star Trek Fleet Command but even then that player base skews older, I’m one of the youngest people in my alliance. So I absolutely agree with this, it would be nice to get another mmo.

I think Epic get it for a few months then it appears on Steam. I can’t see PC version selling as well while its on Epic

Does anyone know why there is no Nintendo Switch release? It’s the only console I own and wombat to play when it’s released!

Your wombat will need to get a PC or another console. The switch which I love is a woefully underpowered machine at this point and it takes a lot of work to port if you aren’t developing natively from the start

I’ll be on the lookout for reviews on this. There’s a boatload of great games out there competing for our dollars and time, and historically Trek games are pretty lame, imo. Depending on reviews, maybe I’ll grab it on digital sale at the PS store.

I’m excited for this. But it feels weird that they’ve shoe horned Spock into some relatively minor diplomatic dispute. Feel like he’s just there for name recognition and nothing else.

Now that liked a season of Picard I guess I got to say that I saw Spock and then couldn’t stop crying. Lol Kidding (not 6 watching the Big E go down over Genesis), nice thought to see what he is up to though pre destruction of Romulus. Sounds like had he had not gone missing he could have told Starfleet to not build robots programmed to act as slaves and saved Utopia Planetia. Would Picard under the influence of the Borg might have overruled him or noticed his illogic? Either way hope this game is good. Haven’t seen a good Trek game since Starfleet Command brought SFB to the comp, what happened to those?!?

Picard was not under the influence of the Borg. And Spock didn’t disappear until two years after the attack on Mars.

Well you’d think that Picard then would know better than to use robots programmed to act like slaves to build his evacuation fleet. Not a good idea. I’d attribute that to Borg actively communicating with his subconscious pushing AI research vs. unethical stupidity. Spock must have been too busy on Romulus? You’d think he would have been all “this is illogical”.

It was working fine until the Zhat Vash reprogrammed the Synths. I’m not sure how much Picard was in charge of running things on Utopia Planitia anyway.

Well given he seems to have ditched his friends to the point he doesn’t even know Crusher had a kid, you hope he’d be doing his job managing the fleet and not too lazy to have noticed the ethical dilemma. Or… Borg were manipulating his subconsciousness given they made him into a receiver..

Who do they have doing Spock’s voice?

Whoever they are wow, what a great job!! It sounds just like Leonard Nimoy!

SOME of the lines sound just like Leonard Nimoy to me, and some of them sound a bit off. I wondered in the beginning if they were using clips from when Mr. Nimoy was alive, but by the end, I didn’t think that.

Somewhere out there appearently are all the recorded lines for Star Trek: The Secret of Vulcan Fury by Nimoy and even Deforest Kelly. I don’t know it that is an interplay rumor but if it is not someone has to CGI that game finally and release it.

Resurgence was first announced during The Game Awards 2021 and is a choice-driven adventure game that follows a similar design template to Telltale Games’ titles (Dramatic Labs consists of ex-Telltale employees). The story unfolds shortly after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation as players control two original characters, an officer and a commander, to solve a mystery aboard the U.S.S. Resolute . The narrative and your relationships change depending on your choices, and gameplay features light combat and puzzle-solving. Resurgence is currently slated to launch on PlayStation and Xbox consoles and PC.

Star Trek Infinite

Star Trek: Infinite review

It's stellaris, but not as we know it., our verdict.

Compelling, but not quite there yet. Needs two seasons to grow the beard.

PC Gamer's got your back Our experienced team dedicates many hours to every review, to really get to the heart of what matters most to you. Find out more about how we evaluate games and hardware.

What is it?  Paradox style grand strategy, but Star Trek. Release date October 12, 2023 Expect to pay $30/£27 Developer Nimble Giant Publisher Paradox Interactive Reviewed on  Intel i5, 16GB RAM, GTX 1660 Link Official site

I am opening this review with a warning: I am going to spend a lot of time here talking about a different game. This isn't something I usually do, but as you may have guessed from the screenshots, Infinite is very much built on the chassis of Stellaris with some appropriately Star Trek twists. Consider it the Napoleon: Total War to Stellaris's Empire: Total War: a more focused, narrative spin off from a larger and more sprawling game.

The game is set firmly in the Next Generation/Deep Space Nine era (it actually begins with the Romulan attack on Khitomer, where Worf's family were killed) and portrays the Federation, Klingons, Romulans and Cardassians as four superpowers locked in constant competition. In my game for example, an early decision brought the Federation and the Klingons closer together, and the Romulans and Cardassians immediately responded by forming a counter-alliance to stop the perceived threat.

Star Trek Infinite

Unlike Stellaris, Infinite is only semi-random. The four great powers collide in the middle of the map in roughly the same way every game while the rest of the galaxy is full of randomly placed "minor powers". So a classic Federation member like Trill can feasibly spawn on the opposite side of the galaxy and end up getting invaded by Romulans. It's not unlike joining a Stellaris game a third of the way in, after the big power blocks have formed. For the most part this works surprisingly well, but there are some oddities: for example playing as the Federation I was prompted to colonise the uninhabited planet of Denobula. I know, Nimble Giant, I like to pretend Enterprise never existed sometimes too.

Here's the good news: Star Trek: Infinite expresses the Federation fantasy far better than Stellaris ever did. You can genuinely expand by diplomacy here, buttering up minor species and inviting them, one by one. The other playable factions have their own spin on this, with the Romulans setting up puppet governments and the Cardassians using something similar to Stellaris's overlord system. The Klingons just invade people, they don't really do subtle.

One of the other big changes from Stellaris will be familiar to players of other Paradox games. There's now a narrative structure to the game in the form of a branching mission tree, where events can be triggered by objectives as exciting as "have Bajor join the federation" or as banal as "survey 10 systems". Some of these events follow classic Trek storylines, but others present compelling 'what if' moments, like Romulan and Vulcan reunification. They're as much about steering your playstyle as getting the rewards, and I ended up enjoying them a great deal.

Star Trek Infinite

Continuing mission

One of the best of these mission chains is the Enterprise itself. Completing the first step will reward you with a jack of all trades super ship that is equally adept at science, war and diplomacy. Sending the Enterprise out to do various tasks will reward you with a Next Generation crew member, who might give you a generic empire bonus, or might physically appear as a recruitable leader. Other major and minor Trek characters can also emerge in this fashion, meaning that, entirely organically, I once ended up in a situation where the Enterprise was valiantly holding the line against an unstoppable Borg sphere, only to be rescued by Benjamin Sisko commanding a fleet of Voyagers.

I once ended up in a situation where the Enterprise was valiantly holding the line against an unstoppable Borg sphere, only to be rescued by Benjamin Sisko commanding a fleet of Voyagers.

At this point I have to talk about the targ in the room. Stellaris already has a Star Trek mod, so why should you pay for a game when a mod is free? Well Stellaris's New Horizons mod is a sprawling epic that covers the entirety of Star Trek history and every faction in the galaxy, while Infinite is focused on the Alpha and Beta quadrants of the Next Generation era, and frankly I think it's better for it. This means, for example, that the Borg are more akin to the terrifying invader from nowhere they are in the show, rather than another player faction. It's also, paradoxically, the cheaper option if you don't already own a full deck of Stellaris DLC.

Something Infinite should have over any mod is polish, and while it does feel less clunky than New Horizons, there are still more issues than there should be at launch. Like a decidedly un-silent notification for a "silent alarm", or the strange bug that caused the voiceover to claim a character had died every five minutes, or the time I ended up with two Rikers. Although to be fair that last one also happened in the show.

Star Trek Infinite

It's things like this, and the more direct ports from Stellaris, that make Infinite feel a little unfinished. I don't mind that Nimble Giant haven't really changed the planet building interface, but I feel like I probably shouldn't be trading energy credits for alloys as the famously post capitalist Federation. There's also a disappointing lack of interactions with pre-FTL civilisations, a Prime Directive dilemma or two would've been nice. In the end I stopped playing well before the victory conditions, but that's also frequently true of Stellaris, a game I've played for hundreds of hours.

Nevertheless at the end of every review I ask myself "do I still want to play this game some more, now that I'm not being paid?" and the answer here is yes. I really do want to try that reunification story arc, I want to see if I can evacuate the Romulans before their sun explodes this time (sorry guys), I want to actually get the Enterprise E before Jean Luc Picard dies of old age.

I don't mark games on what they could be, but I certainly hope that Infinite gets the same kind of post release support as its bigger brother. I think it would be fascinating (captain) to see how the two games grow and inform one another over the years. Now that would be the best of both worlds.

Star Trek is one of the most popular and well-known stories of all time. When it first premiered on television in 1966, there was nothing else like it. And since its birth, few other shows have even come close to matching the story in terms of scientific accuracy and appeal. Today, one of the ways that Star Trek lovers engage with the story is through video games, which can be more immersive than a show or movie. And the best Star Trek video games are accurate, they depict likenesses, and they come with an unbeatable plot. Here are some of our favorite Star Trek video game picks.

1. Star Trek: Bridge Crew (PSVR)

Star Trek: Bridge Crew was specifically developed as a virtual reality game, allowing Trekkies to interact with their favorite characters in a realistic, authentic way. If desired, players can operate in the co-op mode, designing a team of four to tackle their latest adventures. The team will consist of the Captain, Helm, Tactical, and Engineer as they travel through the galaxy.

Based on the 2009 Star Trek film timeline, the new ship, the USS Aegis begins searching for a home for the Vulcans. And, to do so, they head into Klingon territory. Players should keep in mind that the Captain’s role is the only one that displays the details of the mission. And the captain must communicate their latest endeavors to the rest of the crew in order to succeed.

The qualities that set this game apart from other Star Trek games are its dynamic gameplay and ongoing missions. Those who play Star Trek: Bridge Crew could really play indefinitely on a solo or co-op mission, which results in a captivating and valuable story. This game also stands apart from others in terms of its realism. As a virtual reality game, players should expect to feel completely immersed in the story.

2. Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force Expansion - PC

Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force Expansion is a first-person shooter game that is set in the fourth Star Trek television series. The game follows a number of different missions on the USS Voyager — some of which take place 70,000 miles away from home. The game incorporates a large number of original characters into the gameplay, and each character features the actual voice from the television series. So, you can expect authentic results from iconic characters like Captain Kathyrn Janeway and Lieutenant Commander Tuvok.

The game starts with holodeck training that the team fails. It shows the characters attempting to complete a task on a Borg ship. But the end result is that the majority of those characters fail, becoming captured by the enemy. After the holodeck training, the Voyager is attacked by an unknown force. And, ultimately, the ship is teleported to a mysterious place. Characters within the game have to attempt to determine where they are, and what threats lie ahead in order to keep the crew and the future of the Voyager protected. This game was an extreme success as far as Star Trek games go. In fact, it received an 86 percent approval rate, attesting to its production and bugless gameplay.

  • Created by Raven Software
  • Stranded in Delta Quadrant
  • Set on USS Voyager
  • Tour mode or multiplayer mode
  • Rich colors
  • Varied architecture
  • Great single player option
  • Nice graphics
  • Really challenging end boss

3. Star Trek Encounters - PlayStation 2

One of the interesting things about the Star Trek universe is that it’s incredibly developed. Over the past 60 years, artists of multiple kinds have had the chance to add to the universe, creating new environments and challenges along the way. And this often comes out in video games. In Star Trek: Encounters, for example, gamers control five generations of ships including the Original Series ship, the Next Generation, the Deep Space Nine, the Voyager, and even the most iconic ship: the Enterprise. While some Star Trek games fabricate new worlds and destinations, Encounters features destinations that you’ve probably seen before. And you can even play based on real TV show events.

As you play, you can combat your enemies using a variety of different weapons like Phasers, Pulse Cannons, and Torpedoes. There are also three different modes in the game. So, you can play in a multiplayer mode, in the episode mode of the skirmish mode. The result is a captivating and realistic version of the Star Trek universe that is likely to keep you entertained for many hours to come. Finally, the game style is similar to that which you would find in a conventional arcade – or a shooter game.

  • 5 generations of ships available
  • Authentic Star Trek locations
  • Choose from three modes
  • Multiplayer options
  • Fun process
  • Can increase the challenge
  • Reminiscent of the arcade
  • Challenging gameplay
  • Anticlimactic finish

4. Star Trek - Playstation 3

For the first time ever, Star Trek for the Playstation 3 allowed players to adopt the characters of Captain Kirk and Spock in a new, and unique storyline. Set after the events of 2009 in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot, was the first in-house game developed by Paramount Studios. This game is set in the Kelvin universe. It follows Captain Kirk, Spock, and the Starfleet crew as they evaluate and track a theft that took place. Captain Kirk and Spock head to Gorn territories in order to right the wrongs that were done to them.

One thing that sets this game apart from other Star Trek games is that the development of it relied on collaborative efforts from the film team and the video game producers. This means that the production team emphasized authenticity in the making of this game. And it shows. The likenesses of Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are used throughout this game, making players feel entirely immersed in the plot of one of their favorite films. At the same time, the game allows you to travel to parts of the universe that have never yet been seen. The result is one of the most unforgettable Star Trek gaming experiences yet.

  • Available on PS3, Xbox 360, PC
  • Takes place after the events of 2009
  • Never before seen sectors
  • Includes two of the most well-known characters
  • New visuals
  • Lots of items to find
  • Voice acting
  • A handful of glitches

5. Star Trek: Legacy - Xbox 360

Star Trek: Legacy hit the shelves in 2006, and quickly became a fan favorite due to the varied gameplay. Those who integrate themselves in this Trekkie world will be quick to notice that they have full access to the Star Trek universe in all of its glory. Along the way, they can command one to four ships, and battle others in the galaxy. Even when you’re in charge of multiple starships, you only command one at a time, allowing you to focus on the task at hand. You control features like weapons, repairs, and travel. And you can adjust the viewpoint, if desired.

Those who jump into the world of Star Trek: Legacy can also use the customized skirmish mode. You choose which way you’ll play, giving yourself the ideal gaming environment. And the PC version of this game has a few additional modes. The single-player version of this game operates in three different eras, switching between Star Trek: Enterprise, The Original Series, and The Next Generation. Or in 2159, 2270, and 2333. As graphically rich as it is engaging, Star Trek: Legacy is a collector's item if we’ve ever seen one. And the challenge that it presents to gamers is full of entertainment.

  • Spans the whole universe
  • Large-scale combat
  • 3D battlefields
  • Ships with full-damage modeling
  • Easier to control than PC version
  • Kid-friendly
  • Repetitive phrases

6. Star Trek: Conquest - Nintendo Wii

Developed by 4J Studios, Star Trek: Conquest is a single-player action game that uses both turn-based strategy and real-time strategy to captivate your attention. The game is set in the Next Generation chapter of Star Trek. And it allows the player to choose from groups that exist in that chapter like the Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Breen, Cardassian and Dominion groups. In this game, everyone is at war. Alliances that previously existed between groups have faded or been disrupted due to recent events. And all of this makes for a rather chaotic and dangerous universe. Everyone wants to capture more territories, outlining themselves as universe dominators.

Upon its release, Star Trek: Conquest received mixed reviews. Those who played on the Wii tended to be more skeptical of the game than those that played on other

platforms. We’re a fan of this particular Star Trek game because of its limitless possibilities. Interested in joining the gruff Klingon world for a while? No problem. Would you rather wear Romulan attire? If so, you can do just that in this Next Generation game. While this game is less linear than other Star Trek games, it comes with unique challenges and it requires strategy to win.

  • Nintendo Wii, Playstation 2
  • Single-player
  • Can take direct control of any ship
  • 6 playable races
  • Strategy based
  • Challenging
  • Gets boring after a few conquers
  • Clunky controls

7. Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova - PlayStation 4

Trekkies that picture the most notorious and shocking Star Trek movies and shows typically point to those with Captain Kirk or the Next Generation. These are the most well-known chapters of Star Trek. But there are others. Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is based on an animated Star Trek series. It debuted recently, in 2021 as an attempt to grow the universe that Paramount+ depicts. In the game, the year is 2383. The Voyager has already made its way home to earth when a group of aliens stumbles upon the USS Protostar and takes it as their own. Players have to figure out how to work with their team and make it out of Delta Quadrant in order to be successful.

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is a great game for those who love to explore new alien worlds instead of existing in old ones. Along the way, you’re likely to make it to places like Orisi, Mirios, and Taresse. And each place features its own culture, challenges, and puzzles. The goal is to meet with the aliens in each place and learn about their history. But those who make it far enough to do so are likely to run into the enemy.

  • Play as Dal R’El and Gwyndala
  • Takes you to alien worlds
  • Make first contact with new species
  • A new nemesis

8. Star Trek: Away Team - PC

One thing that we love about Star Trek games is that they come in different styles. Some options might be first-person shooter games. Others might be more strategic or puzzle driven. Star Trek: Away Team is a real-time tactics game that was originally released for computers in 2001. Set after the Dominion War, the game hosts a variety of new characters in order to keep things interesting. But it also includes some fan favorites like Data, Michael Dorn, and Brent Spiner.

The gamer controls between four and six characters while immersed in this universe. Everyone has their own abilities and strengths, making them complementary and useful in specific environments. It’s up to the gamer to use them accordingly. Specialties that they might have could include a strength in science, health, or even engineering. And it’s fairly easy to see how those strengths could impact the mission. As a special operations group, this gang of characters can face as many as 18 different missions that require sharp faculties, attention, and strategy. You might find your team working against the Klingon race, the Borg, or even the Romulans, depending on that mission. What is certain is that there are plenty of challenges for you and your team to navigate as you make your way through the universe.

  • Strategy game
  • Chronicle missions of the USS Incursion
  • Experimental Starfleet ship
  • Holographic masking technology
  • Easy to play
  • No likenesses

9. Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Fallen - PC

Most Star Trek games exist within worlds with which Trekkies are very familiar. We might find ourselves fighting against the Borg in one iteration of the game. Or perhaps the Romulans. But Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Fallen presents a new reality to gamers that is both interesting and involved with Star Trek during a different chapter of its existence. At one point in Star Trek history, the Pah-Wraiths were banished from the Alpha Quadrant. But in this game, they’re attempting to come back in pursuit of three powerful orbs that could allow them to not only live within the quadrant but to rule it. If they succeed, life as the Alpha Quadrant will likely change for the worse.

In order to avoid this reality, the gamer adopts the character of Captain Sisko, Major Kira, or Lieutenant Worf in order to beat the Pah-Wraiths to the red orbs. Your goal is to find and contain them to protect the future of the Alpha Quadrant. Along the way, each character is prone to having its own mission and challenge. But they must also be available to coordinate with the team at large, or face ruin. What’s certain is that Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Fallen offers new and memorable challenges for gamers.

  • Can play as multiple characters
  • Special missions
  • 3D adventure
  • Different side of Star Trek
  • Fast reload
  • Great quality
  • Not always user friendly

10. Star Trek: Tactical Assault

Serious Trekkies know what the Star Trek universe is like. It’s complicated, and often chaotic and conflicted, which means that those on Star Trek ships are often in dangerous settings. Star Trek: Tactical Assault shows this reality since it features a variety of warships that are frequently under fire or headed for fire. But one thing that the game also demonstrates is that the captain (or the gamer, in some cases) can best prove their value and ability to exist within the Star Trek universe by either combating the enemy and winning or maneuvering their ship in a way that keeps their fleet safe. This game comes with two campaign modes to offer the gamer variety and multiple types of challenges. And, as the acting captain, it’s up to you to make the choices that will keep your ship healthy and fighting in the future.

In this game, you can also play from the lines of 5 different races, meaning that you can be the captain of a Federation ship, Klingon, Romulan, Gorn, and Orion ship. The altered perspective gives you a greater depth of understanding of the Star Trek universe. This multiplayer game is both entertaining and challenging, support Trekkies in their journeys to become the best captains possible.

  • Five playable races
  • Two full campaign modes
  • Real-time combat
  • Involves multiple war ships
  • Multiplayer option
  • Full-length campaigns
  • Teen-friendly
  • Classic game
  • Gameplay could be improved

Star Trek is an incredibly popular franchise that captivates full generations even today. And since it has been around for nearly 60 years, the story has had the opportunity to go through many different iterations and visual appearances. From the iconic Captain Kirk stories to the Next Generation, the story gets really deep and fascinating to those who stick with it long enough to learn about it. As a result of the story’s popularity, it's made its way into video games. And, over time, those video games have become more and more diverse. Today, you can choose from options like first-person shooter games, strategy, and even management options. And they are likely to satisfy even the most dedicated Star Trek fans.

A Brief History of Star Trek Video Games

Did you know that the first Star Trek game was first released in 1971? Titled Star Trek, this game featured turn-based battles, a text-based design, and tons of potential choices for gamers. Together, these key components teamed up to offer a game with nearly endless options. Although gaming has come a long way in the past 50 years, true Star Trek fanatics could benefit from dipping their toes back into iconic games like the original Star Trek to witness the progression of the story and the birth of Star Trek video games.

After the original Star Trek became popular, several other video games followed in its tracks. While many of the newer variations were slow to captivate audiences, there were a few that truly stood out for their gameplay and plot. Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, for example, allows players to embody Captain Kirk, who is in charge of the Enterprise.

After Activision acquired the rights to Star Trek in 1998, some of the most popular Star Trek games in history came to fruition. Titles like Star Trek: Armada, Star Trek Voyager - Elite Force, and Star Trek: Bridge Commander took Trekkies by surprise because of their improved graphics, likenesses, and storylines. And this solidified these games in history as some of the best video games ever to be released.

Star Trek continues to captivate gamers and story-lovers alike for its depth and realism. Who wouldn’t want to gain a greater understanding of the breadth of the universe, right? And since video games offer users an immersive experience into the universe of their choosing, it's no wonder why these Star Trek titles have become permanent fixtures in gaming history.

Star Trek Fleet Command: 2023 Roadmap Update

By Star Trek 16 December 2022

star trek game 2023

Commanders,

Star Trek Fleet Command has celebrated its 4th Anniversary! As we fly into 2023, it’s time to review the passing year and share some of our roadmap plans for what lies ahead. In 2022 we released four new arcs, featuring both new and classic IPs:

  • D’Vor Feesha ship
  • Treasury building
  • Cross Server Leaderboards
  • U.S.S. Cerritos ship
  • “Below Deck Officers”
  • Infinite Incursions
  • Mantis ship
  • Galaxy Tree Expansion
  • Alliance Starbase
  • U.S.S. Defiant
  • Automated Defenses
  • Armory building
  • Espionage spy event!

Overall, it was a busy year, and we look ahead for an even bigger one in 2023! To that end, it’s time to share some more details on what we have been working on and what can be expected to arrive in your quadrant next year!

As always, details are subject to change, as may the order and timing of their eventual release, but we hope you’ll be excited by this current roadmap:

Fleet Commanders

Hailing Frequencies

Galaxy chat is a great place to communicate with your fellow Commanders but have you ever wished you could hail some of those ships you meet in the vast galaxy? The Hailing Frequencies feature that will arrive early next year will include special animated emotes that you can use from your ships to communicate with other commanders in your vicinity. You can probably guess some of the obvious ideas we plan to introduce near launch

Game Lag/Performance

An issue this year has been the game performance/lag, especially during events like Infinite Incursions and competitive Territory Captures. Improving lag and performance is a major focus for our team, and something we have constantly been working to improve. We don’t want to introduce awesome new content and features every month if the gameplay experience for our players is suboptimal. To give you all some context, lag and performance in general are not simple things we can fix in an instant. They are complex and involve many different code paths on both the client (game app) and back-end servers. We wanted to share with you some of the improvements our dedicated engineering team has been working on and where those changes are in the pipeline (see image below). As you can see, we recently released several improvements like the revised battle engine and alliance contributions changes that had significant performance impacts plus daily reset scaling improvements that helped with the event refreshes at 9am PT.

More improvements are planned for 2023, and we hope you will start feeling a positive change in performance in the next few months.

Game Grind/Loops

Another topic we have been hearing from you (and especially our longer time players) is the amount of loops/grind that a Commander needs to do daily. We recognize that over the years, we have added a lot for dedicated commanders to do on a daily basis. Many ships, features, options, resources, and factions await you each day. These new gameplay features have also increased the time needed to complete daily hostiles and armadas kills. To that end, a big priority for us in 2023 is to help reduce this grind, especially for older content. This will also allow us to provide new fun and engaging content throughout the year!

Rite of Ascension (name might change) ‘etlh QorghHa’lu’chugh ragh ‘etlh nIvqu’ ‘ej jejHa’choH’ (Even the best blade will rust and grow dull unless it is cared for) – Klingon Proverb

In mid 2023, we plan to unleash a new challenge: the Rite of Ascension. This will involve testing the strength of your fleet against increasingly difficult enemy attacks. Commanders will be presented with a series of progressively tougher challenges which they can complete in order to earn rewards. Push as far as you can to show your fellow commanders just how powerful you are.

Can you prove that you have the heart of a warrior? Will you be victorious? Assert your dominance in the galaxy. Qapla’!

2023 IP/Shows

Lastly, the arcs we have planned for next year include some fan favorite shows and movies from the Star Trek catalog, plus some new more recent ones which we are sure all fans would enjoy. We can’t share a lot of details quite yet, but the one small hint we have for the first arc in 2023 will bring back an old geometrically-obsessed enemy you faced before 😀

TNG First Season Stories for Trek Games The game, "Star Trek: Resurgence", came to various platforms in 2023. It introduced several new characters (as well as some old favorites) in its post-Nemesis 24th Century storyline. At the heart of the game's story was a sequel to the first season Next Gen episode "The Last Outpost." Since the trio are revisiting the beginnings of TNG, they look at what other episodes could be mined for stories for new Trek games. Join this round-robin pitch of ideas that takes one first season episode, one of its storylines, and applies it to a new Trek game based on an existing (or entirely new) Trek series. How does "Home Soil" continue in game form? How can "Lower Decks" go further into the ideas of "Haven"? Grab your console of choice and let us know your favorite Trek game pitch.

Summer Game Fest 2023: All the games announced

Who needs e3.

After dozens of stories, we’re just about wrapped with our coverage of Summer Game Fest 2023. Following the cancellation of E3 back in March, we had a smaller, stripped-back experience at SGF. It began... before it all began, with Sony holding its own PlayStation Showcase livestream on May 24th. It was a pretty packed show, featuring Bungie's Marathon , Haven's Fairgame$ , a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, more info on Final Fantasy XVI and Spider-Man 2 , and a release date for Alan Wake II . There was also the Project Q handheld streaming device.

Then came Summer Game Fest with an opening night event on Thursday, June 8th. We got a gameplay reveal for Mortal Kombat 1 , a new (delayed to 2024) release date for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth ,   and a handful of smaller reveals like Sand Land and Sonic Superstars . There were a lot of sequels and free-to-play MMO trailers, but it was a generally low-key affair, with fewer big names than we've come to expect from the team behind The Game Awards.

The Day of the Devs and Devolver streams immediately following Summer Game Fest's live show were a little more successful, with interesting games from smaller studios, including Baby Steps , Beastieball , Cocoon , Hauntii , Helskate , Simpler Times and Viewfinder .

It wasn't until Sunday's Xbox event that we got an event filled with the AAA announcements you'd expect out of E3. Microsoft had a customarily dense show that featured new announcements and some release dates (or windows) for known games. Among the games featured were Avowed , Fable , South of Midnight , Persona 3 Reload , Forza Motorsport , Senua's Saga: Hellblade II , Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty , Metaphor: ReFantazio and Clockwork Revolution . We also finally got an Xbox Series S that has 1TB of built-in storage.

On Monday, we saw a pair of smaller shows. First up was Ubisoft, which featured Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora , a trio of Assassin's Creed games, a new Crew game and a fresh Prince of Persia title. Later that day it was Capcom's turn, and they showed off Exoprimal , again, and offered an intriguing look at Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess , which looks like a unique third-person action game. Finally, because it's 2023, there was also an indefinite delay to the company's almost-forgotten AAA sci-fi game, Pragmata . That's a game that was announced for PlayStation 5 way back in June 2020 — before we even knew what the PS5 looked like — and this is its second delay after initially being expected in 2022.

We’ll have more coverage in the coming weeks, and will update this post with links when they go live. For now, enjoy our analysis, previews and all the other big announcements from SGF 2023.

Summer Game Fest 2023 and the stagnant state of the industry

I published this story about the state of AAA gaming on the eve of Summer Game Fest. After a week stuffed full of gaming announcements, I feel exactly the same way. — Jessica Conditt, Senior Reporter

Generative AI can help bring tomorrow's gaming NPCs to life

This story from senior reporter (and Engadget's AI expert) Andrew Tarantola looks at the history of NPCs from if-then programming through to finite-state-machines, decision and behavior trees, GOAPs, and modern AIs in games like The Last of Us , and then looks to the future to see how generative AI might impact the future of gaming.

Ubisoft needs a reboot

At some point in the last console generation, Ubisoft lost its soul. It was a piecemeal erosion process that started in 2015, and it finally resulted in a complete identity collapse somewhere between the studio’s unironic rollout of in-game NFTs and its sixth delay of Skull & Bones . Ubisoft has 40 years of AAA hits and weird licensing deals to its name, and it used to be a pillar of European innovation — but in 2023, it’s selling live-service blandness, mobile ports with microtransactions and unreliable release dates. What even is Ubisoft anymore? — Jessica Conditt

The Starfield direct has me excited for Bethesda's new ambitious RPG

Senior video producer Brandon Quintana shot this video immediately after Microsoft's Starfield Direct on Sunday, outlining why, after a fuller look at the game, he's more excited than ever for Bethesda's new ambitious RPG.

Why the 'Oxenfree II' team became Netflix's first game studio

In early 2021, Night School was in the market for a partnership. It ended up being acquired by Netflix, becoming the company's first game studio. Now, Night School is gearing up to launch its first game for the streaming giant. But that's not the end of Netflix's ambitions.

Game previews

'alan wake ii' stands out in a sea of sequels.

I’m nervous about Saga’s fate in Alan Wake II — and that only makes me more excited for the full game. This is first-and-foremost a linear, narrative-driven experience, and it looks spooky as hell. – Jessica Conditt

‘Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon’ has fast battles with customizable mechs

Armored Core, one of the longest-running mech battle series ever, hasn’t been seen in over a decade. Now, developer FromSoftware, flying high from Elden Ring and Dark Souls glory, is returning to mechs, with what it says is a remastered, reimagined take on robot combat. It’s time for a mech gaming boom. – Mat Smith, UK Bureau Chief

‘Cocoon’ is worth getting excited about

Cocoon is a game that makes perfect sense while you're playing it. That would be an unremarkable achievement if it wasn't also a game that forces you to use its levels to solve themselves. It’s the debut title from Geometric Interactive, a studio from folks that previously worked on the award-winning puzzle platformers Limbo and Inside . At Summer Game Fest 2023 I had around half an hour to play through the game’s opening, and it has stuck with me more than anything else I saw at the show. In my mind it’s the game of the show. – Aaron Souppouris, Executive Editor

'Forza Motorsport' wants you to drive forever

The long-overdue next title in the Motorsport series (it’s been over five years since the last!) has a bunch of new features, improved physics, better AI and looks absolutely fantastic at 4K/60. The most interesting thing about it to me is that it could well be the last distinct Motorsport game, as Microsoft is moving the series to a game-as-a-service model. In the age of Game Pass, that makes perfect sense to me, and I can’t wait to start driving this October. – Aaron Souppouris

'Immortals of Aveum' first look: A little more magic and this might be wonderful

When I saw the announcement trailer for Immortals of Aveum in the winter of 2022, I was surprised by my own interest in the game. Today, I remain interested in Immortals of Aveum and I think I’ve figured out why. There aren’t a ton of first-person action games that rely on mechanics other than guns — Dishonored , Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hexen come to mind, but it’s a small field overall. That might be one reason Immortals stands out as something fresh, but it’s also nice to see a new, AAA-level game that’s single-player and narrative-driven with a contained campaign, rather than an open world of live-service features. – Jessica Conditt

‘Lysfanga’ is what happens when hack-and-slash meets tactical time travel

Lysfanga ’s isometric views may conjure up memories of Hades, but this is a different kind of game. While you’ll still be slicing and dicing monsters and enemies, protagonist Imë combines her spells and weapon combos with the ability to revert time and do it all over again, differently. The second time around, her shadow from the previous timeline will continue to rush into the enemies. While some action-game prowess helps, you’ll only beat most levels by thinking them through before you act. The controls and play style aren’t remotely similar, but Lysfanga reminded me of old Fire Emblem games, where careful planning decided a fight before it even begins. Even in this early demo, the game offers some incredibly satisfying moments when all your attacking clones come together to wipe out all the enemies in mere seconds. – Mat Smith

‘Mortal Kombat 1’ made a great first impression

Ed Boon's on-stage gameplay reveal of Mortal Kombat 1 , the latest entry in the storied fighting game franchise, was one of the stand-out moments of an otherwise subdued opening event. At a private event after the show, Brandon Quintana and Mat Smith sat down to play some MK1 and came away impressed.

'Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown' is a Metroidvania-style platformer coming in 2024

After a small reveal at Summer Game Fest’s opening night event, Ubisoft did a deeper dive into the game during Monday’s “Forward” stream. After that, senior video producer Brandon Quintana got his hands on an early build of the game and had a blast.

'33 Immortals' first look: Defying a god is more fun with friends

Can you imagine assembling 33 players for a 25-minute raid? 33 Immortals plans to do exactly that. Channeling the animation style of retro cartoons (and a little Banner Saga), 33 Immortals is a multiplayer roguelike top-down action game from the creators of Spiritfarer . In this early build of the game I played with five others and had a lot of fun, even if some technical issues spoiled the party a little. I’m excited to play a roguelike as part of a mob, and I'm curious to see what the other character types will be. – Mat Smith

‘Under the Waves’ is a sad but relaxing oceanic adventure

Parallel Studio’s Under the Waves is a calming game. Between the cheers and jeers from Crash Team Rumble players (possibly employees) nearby, I was diving. Diving deeper and deeper into the inky blue, chasing a jettisoned shipping container as it bounced off rocks, spilling soft toys and revealing a mysteriously abandoned submarine hidden deeper still. While I might have been relaxed, I also felt a little unsettled. In a lot of ways, whether it’s the story yet to be revealed or the uneasy tension that is touched on regularly, it reminds me of Firewatch , even if it’s all set undersea. – Mat Smith

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Will Tackle Big Original Series Canon Questions

Kirk and La'an in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2

This article appears in the new issue of  DEN OF GEEK  magazine. Get your copy  here .

For fans who loved Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1, there’s some good news: the second season isn’t trying to reinvent the show. In fact, in some ways, Strange New Worlds season 2 might feel even more like what the first season promised to be. Debuting just two months after the conclusion of one of the most tightly serialized Star Trek seasons ever, Picard season 3 , Strange New Worlds returns with the same goal it had in its first season: to tell throwback, self-contained stories with a different tone, every single week.

But that doesn’t mean the scope is the same. In 2022, Strange New Worlds left two unresolved cliffhangers dangling — the departure of La’an (Christian Chong) and the arrest of Una (Rebecca Romijn) while also hinting at the idea that we will see way more of James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) in 2259, well before he takes command of the Enterprise in 2265. More than any other ongoing Trek show, Strange New Worlds is playing with a lot of Star Trek toys at the same time, and within the first few episodes, fans will see a lot of familiar things, not just from The Original Series but the larger canon, too. For co-creator and co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman, the goal of Strange New Worlds isn’t just about doing cool Star Trek stuff, but instead, trying to use a more traditional Trek format to tell brave and interesting stories about our culture now.

Den of Geek magazine caught up with Goldsman to get a sense of the next 10 episodes and the overall future of the series, including the tantalizing idea that this show could eventually “overlap” with the continuity of The Original Series .

Ad – content continues below

“Season one was, if you really think about it, kind of an experiment,” Goldsman says. “Not for us, but you know, for the audience. We believed that hewing closely to that genre-hopping thing that is very consistent in The Original Series , but also Star Trek in general, were good ideas. But there was some pushback when we were developing it. ‘What, they’re suddenly in a children’s story?’ Things like that. This type of TV isn’t exactly what people are doing today. So, because we got such a great response from people out there in the world, our brief for season two became: let’s do season one but bigger and better.”

Just like seasons of TOS in the ’60s or The Next Generation in the ‘90s, the second season of Strange New Worlds will feel familiar, albeit with some surprising new characters and situations. For Goldsman, it’s within these self-contained morality tales that Star Trek continues to be unique. And, again, right off the bat, the new Strange New Worlds season tackles contemporary problems like war profiteering, performance-enhancing drugs, and biological discrimination.

“One thing we try to do is to use science fiction as a lens on a modern dilemma,” Goldsman says. “And in the ‘60s, Star Trek was the first among equals to really do that well. But it owed a great deal to The Twilight Zone in that respect, creating these kinds of O. Henry-style stories for science fiction. I think the original Star Trek owes a small debt to Rod Serling , and all the Trek series after that owe a debt to both.”

Unlike the vast majority of new prestige TV, and the majority of the rest of the Star Trek series, Strange New Worlds season 2 will continue to feel like a throwback, at least in terms of the format. In theory, a casual viewer could watch a random episode of Strange New Worlds season 2, which isn’t even true of the kid-friendly series Prodigy . So, does that mean fans should expect Strange New Worlds to be totally disconnected from canon concerns? Well, no. This is still a modern Trek show, and in the first episode, two very familiar alien enemies are either seen outright or referenced. By episode 3, a few more familiar names are mentioned while some very old canon questions are addressed. In fact, Goldsman tells us that several kinds of crossover episodes are always on the table when new seasons begin brainstorming.

“At the beginning of each season, we blue-sky the hell out of it,” Goldsman says. “And we always leave so many episodes on the table, and many of them are [crossovers]. I mean, there are different ways, depending on the species or technology, that folks from Enterprise [the prequel series] could still be around. Obviously, we could time-travel into the future. What if we brought back John de Lancie as Q…or as Trelane? We think about those crossovers all the time. And, as you know, this season, one of those episodes is coming.”

Here, Goldsman is referring to the much-talked-about crossover episode with Lower Decks directed by Jonathan Frakes , which will be partly animated, and partly live-action. Back in 2022, Frakes told Den of Geek he considered the crossover episode to be “proof of concept” that Star Trek could do a live-action sitcom. But within the first few episodes, the show is taking other risks, too.

Strange New Worlds is already greenlit for a third season, but how much longer can the series go on? The canon of The Original Series is getting closer and closer, and certain elements of continuity may not entirely match up. Goldsman points out that Spock’s journey is a big part of Strange New Worlds , and the existence of “smiling Spock” in the original Star Trek pilot, “The Cage,” has been a gift to the writers.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

Essentially, before the character of Spock was fully formed by Gene Roddenberry and Leonard Nimoy, and before Star Trek found its footing, Spock was not meant to be as coldly logical as he became. As a result, Spock’s smile in “The Cage” and his general emotionalism have become a canonical mystery. Starting with Short Treks in 2019, it’s a mystery that Strange New Worlds is still untangling. Goldsman says “something happened between ‘The Cage’ and ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before’” in terms of Spock’s demeanor. Part of season 2 does begin to acknowledge very openly just how different the Spock of this series is right now from what most fans know. While the show isn’t ignoring the differences between Ethan Peck’s Spock and Nimoy’s Spock, it isn’t going for a quick fix retcon, either. In fact, Goldsman thinks that if the show were able to run for a decent amount of time, something even more interesting than a retcon could occur.

“Look, when it comes to canon, we’re screwing with it a little bit,” Goldsman admits. “There was no indication that Uhura served on Pike’s Enterprise . We’ve invented that from whole cloth. We’ve retconned Spock and Chapel’s relationship. But, I think it is our job to get there. The closer we get to that moment, just after ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before,’ we have to acknowledge canon. And the closer we get, we have to start to resemble The Original Series .” Why after “Where No Man Has Gone Before?” Well, for Goldsman, The Original Series as we know it doesn’t really start until we get the core cast (including Dr. McCoy) and everybody else in their “correct” uniform colors, which wasn’t really the case until a few episodes into the show’s production run.

That said, Goldsman knows not everything can stay in this nebulous in-between stage forever, and firmly believes the series could safely continue for seven years before hitting real TOS problems.

“If we were so lucky as to continue, I think we could even overlap. I think that would really be interesting to actually rub up against The Original Series .”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 debuts June 15 on Paramount+.
