Best Cruise Excursions in Tortola on a Day in Port

Included on many eastern Caribbean cruises, Tortola offers plenty of cruise port excursions to choose. From beautiful beaches and mountain drives to shopping or sipping rum, there’s something for everyone.

Here are our recommendations for cruise excursions on your day in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

Take a Shore Excursion to Tortola Beaches

In This Post...

If you’re looking for the perfect tropical beach, many cruise ship excursions head to the north side of Tortola for some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Laid-back and picturesque, these soft sand beaches offer swimming, snorkeling and in winter, surfing.

Apple Bay is located on the north-western end of Tortola. It’s a great beach for surfing or boogie boarding especially in the winter months.

Cane Garden Bay isn’t a secluded hideaway but it’s not to be missed, either. Nestled against a lush green hillside, the sand is like sugar and the water, calm. It’s also close to the port so you could find other cruise passengers enjoying the beach and the few restaurants and bars.

Brewers Bay beckons you to its hidden shores on the north side of the island. Accessible by taxi or car, it’s a haven for locals and those looking for something off the beaten path. Not filled with tourist-y restaurants, you may want to bring water and a snack.

Taste the Local Food in Tortola

Cultures come together in the BVI to create a flavorful mélange of Caribbean cuisine . Tortola food tours are fun shore excursions. Locals love their roti, a flatbread stuffed with barbecued meat and folded like a burrito.

Fragrant spices include curry, allspice and hot peppers and they are used in abundance. Feel daring? Try curried goat meat soup (tastes like chicken of course).

Fresh seafood and just-caught fish plus colorful tropical fruits round out the culinary experience. Close to the port, the main thoroughfare in Road Town, Main Street, is dotted with lively restaurants, cafés and open-air bars.

Stop in for lunch and try a fresh fruit rum punch, one of the most popular (and potent!) drinks on the island.

Go Shopping in Tortola

St. Thomas this isn’t. And for sure not St. John’s, USVI . And you’re in the British Virgin Islands not the US Virgin Islands. Prices will be a bit higher here.

Tortola is smaller and less touristy but there’s wonderful shopping that’s walking distance to the port. You’ll find most of the shops along and just off of Main Street, which parallels the waterfront. Wander the little side streets and you’ll find art galleries, spice stores and of course tropical clothing boutiques.

If you like to cook, be sure to take home some local spices and a Caribbean cookbook. Several stores sell only spices, hot pepper sauces and condiments. Where are these shops? Your nose will lead you there, once you’re in the vicinity. (Hint: Sunny Caribee is one of the popular spice stores.)

Wickhams Cay: Near to the marina and not far from where the tender will dock, this new waterfront development has yet more stores to burn up your cash or credit card.

Crafts Alive Village: This “village” recently opened at the lower end of Road Town to replace the tent vendors. Rows of brightly-colored tiny “houses” with gingerbread trim (sort of like enclosed kiosks), comprise this new shopping area. Here you’ll find unique and beautiful arts and crafts, handmade in the British Virgin Islands.

Chances are your ship will offer shore tours for those who just want to shop for souvenirs, too.

Historic Sights in Tortola

Sage Mountain National Park: This first National Park in the British Virgin Islands was established in 1964 to preserve and regrow what was lost through decades of deforestation. Sage Mountain, at a stunning 1,716 feet, is the highest point in all of the Virgin Islands.

On a clear day, there’s a breathtaking view of neighboring islands including St. Croix. A dozen trails begin at the parking lot for the hike to the summit and through the park. The easiest way for this excursion is to hire a taxi from Road Town or rent a car to reach the park, located in the center of the island.

Old Government House Museum: Located in Road Town, this historic building is just a short walk from where your ship’s tender will dock. Originally the Governor’s residence from1880 until 1996, you’ll find an interesting display of British memorabilia, maritime antiques and original furniture. A nice detour when strolling along Waterfront Drive.

Virgin Islands Folk Museum: From the dock, head towards downtown Road Town along Main Street. Moved to its historic second location in 1993, the museum is located in the Penn House built in 1911. The West Indies-style house is a showcase for artifacts dating from over two thousand years ago, belonging to the Amerindians, the first known inhabitants. Old photographs, pottery and carvings highlight life on this island and surrounding area.

More Cruise Excursions in Tortola on Your Own

On an eastern Caribbean cruise, there’s always a nearby island to visit. From Tortola, take a ferry boat across the bay to Virgin Gorda, also in the British Virgin Islands.

Giant rock and boulders at The Baths National Park in Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands.

Visit the mysterious Baths formed by giant boulders that seem to have dropped from the sky. Explore winding caves, snake your way through narrow passageways and take a dip in one of the hidden, crystal-clear pools.

After wandering through the caves, head up the stone stairs to the souvenir store before returning to your ship. Available by cruise excursion or on your own.

If you’ve always wanted to play with Flipper, Tortola has a cruise excursion over to Dolphin Discovery and just jump into the water. Watch as the trainer and dolphin go through their paces.

Then, you’ll get onto a platform in the water and have 30 minutes to interact, play and even get your photo taken while getting a kiss from a dolphin. Life aquatic isn’t cheap; tickets for adults and children are over $100 each. But it’s an amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity.

Tiptoe through the tulips at J.R. O’Neal Botanic Garden, just a short walk from the harbor, across Waterfront Drive. Just kidding about the tulips, this is the tropics, after all.

A walk through this 4-acre garden leads you through a wide range of indigenous vegetation, from cacti to herbs and orchids. Learn about the plants and trees native to this area or sit in the shade under a massive banyan tree.

Meander along the paths past fountains and exotics ferns and take a break from the blazing Caribbean sun. A small admission fee is charged.

Your day in Tortola will go by quicker than you’d like. Choose the best Tortola shore excursion for your time in port before you leave home so you don’t miss a thing.

The Baths at Virgin Gorda – Excursion Review

The Baths at Virgin Gorda is a great shore excursion option during a stop in Tortola. Part adventure hike, part photo tour, and part beach break, exploring this natural wonder is truly a unique experience.

The Baths at Virgin Gorda

Excursion review: the baths at virgin gorda.

When on vacation, the Princess wants to do, see, and experience as much as possible. I too like to experience a new port of call, but to me, sometimes that means just relaxing on a beach. After all, it is a cruise vacation!

The Baths at Virgin Gorda was a great shore excursion option to satisfy both of us during our recent stop in Tortola onboard Norwegian Escape . Part adventure hike, part photo tour, and part beach break, exploring this natural wonder is truly a unique experience.

Our visit 8 years ago

We first visited the Baths about 8 years ago during our second cruise together as a couple. Since the details were a bit fuzzy, we took this opportunity to visit the The Baths at Virgin Gorda again. Our recent stop at this picturesque locale reminded us of why we enjoyed this place so much.

The Baths at Virgin Gorda are easily accessible from your cruise ship via a ferry ride from Road Town, Tortola. You can choose to book an organized excursion through the cruise line or simply take the ferry over to Spanishtown on your own. Speedy’s and Smith’s are two ferry services offering trips over to Virgin Gorda every couple of hours. Given our time in port and the ferry schedule, we chose to play it safe and book the organized tour through Norwegian Cruise Line.

View of Tortola from the ferry

After an approximately 35 minute ferry ride followed by a 10 minute bus ride, we arrived at The Baths at Virgin Gorda with about 2.5 hours to explore and enjoy the area.

Arriving at The Baths

The path down to the baths at virgin gorda.

When you first arrive at The Baths at Virgin Gorda , you are located about 300 meters above sea level. From here, you can get some great panoramic shots of the neighboring islands and boulders below from the Top of the Baths Restaurant . After your day down at the Baths, you may want to stop in for a bite to eat or a drink, or perhaps utilize the free Wi-Fi for social media posts like we did. A few shops can also be found here, including a local art gallery and your typical souvenir shop, as well as a restroom.

Top of the Baths Restaurant

After taking a needed restroom break, you are greeted with two options: a path to Devil’s Bay and a path to the Baths. We suggest taking the main path down to the Baths, which is about a 10-15 minute walk depending on how many pictures you stop to take during the descent. This path through the desert-like terrain should be manageable for most, with natural stairs guiding you down to the beach. Be sure to capture a photo of the skull rock formation along the way.

Path down to The Baths

When you finally arrive, you are greeted with a beautiful white sand beach with large granite boulders strewn throughout the Caribbean Sea creating a small perimeter where you can enjoy a quick swim. You do need to be careful as the tides can be rough though. During our visit, the “red flag” was up when we first arrived at the beach, indicating it was not advised to swim or snorkel. Even if you plan to continue along the path to Devil’s Bay, be sure to pause for a few minutes to admire the beauty and take a few selfies of course.

The Baths beach

Additional restrooms can be found at the beach, as well as lockers and the Poor Man’s Bar. Keep in mind that if you do plan on continuing along the path to Devil’s Bay, you will have to back track to pick up your belongings from the locker later. While you could relax and enjoy the warm waters at this beach, this is only the beginning of the adventure at The Baths at Virgin Gorda .

Heading to the Devil’s Bay Trail

Making your way to devil’s bay.

After taking in the sights at the beach, follow the signs to Devil’s Bay Trail. Before embarking along the cavernous path, be sure to grab a few photos of the “shelf” boulder. Now, the journey begins as you enter by crawling through a narrow cleft opening. Keep in mind that you do need to be somewhat agile to make it all the way through the Baths.

The “shelf” boulder

Along the way you will encounter varying water levels depending on tide, slippery rocks with rope handholds, ladders, and narrow openings between boulders that you will need to maneuver. Water shoes are recommended. We personally like our Columbia Drainmakers .

DB enjoying the water

Take your time and don’t worry about the crowds as they will also be in awe of the natural beauty of the caverns and sea pools. If you are like the Princess and can’t swim, you can make it through the path with water that is less than knee height. However, for those who love to swim, take advantage of these natural pools especially in the opening right before Devil’s Bay.

Sea pools and “anvil” formation

There are plenty of nooks and crannies to discover, so be sure to explore them all. You can easily make it through the path in 30-45 minutes stopping along the way to take as many pictures as we did. Do have your imagination and camera ready as there are several formations that are said to resemble a lion’s head, an anvil, and more.

The Princess stopping for some pictures along the way

Once you reach Devil’s Bay, you are greeted with more amazing views. After capturing the beauty on camera, now is your time to relax, snorkel, or swim in this area that is protected by the natural rocks.

Luckily, by the time we made it to Devil’s Bay, the swimming conditions had improved, and now it was only a yellow flag advisory. So, while the Princess relaxed on the beach, I spent the next 45 minutes floating in the refreshing, lukewarm water.

Devil’s Bay

As the morning wore on, more and more travelers were making their way to this beach. Although we had to wake up early, we were thankful for our 7am arrival in Tortola, as we were able to beat the crowds to The Baths at Virgin Gorda and enjoy a relatively quiet morning.

The beach at Devil’s Bay

Knowing that we had to be back for our bus pick-up at 10:45am, we decided to begin our walk back slightly after 10am to allow some time to peruse the gift shop and capture some panoramic views from The Top of the Baths Restaurant.

While you can venture back through the boulders and retrace your steps back to the top, the most direct route is a separate dirt path directly from Devil’s Bay to the parking lot, making a full circle from beginning to end. While still an uphill climb, this path is easier (and drier), and walking at a leisurely pace, it takes only about fifteen minutes to get back to the top.

The path back to the top

Once back to the parking lot area, we dried off, rinsed out our water shoes, and made another quick restroom pit stop (as there are no restrooms located at Devil’s Bay). With a bit of time to spare, we headed over to the restaurant’s patio area to grab some photos and utilize the Wi-Fi for a few minutes before hopping a bus for the transport back to the ferry.

View from the patio at Top of the Baths Restaurant

With an action packed morning including some thrills, pictures, and even some beach time, we were happy to relax during our ferry ride back to Tortola. The ferry ride did take slightly longer on the return trip, approximately 45 minutes, but still left us plenty of time to explore Road Town upon our return.

Overview of an Excursion to The Baths at Virgin Gorda

All cruise lines stopping in Tortola will offer a beach break to The Baths at Virgin Gorda , but as mentioned above, you can also get there on your own via local ferries. The cruise lines use the same ferry companies but have chartered service. Once on the island of Virgin Gorda, it is about a 10 minute cab ride through Spanishtown to reach The Baths. If you purchase the excursion through your cruise line all additional costs are included, but if you choose to venture there on your own, the cost of a taxi ride is about $6-8 a person each way, and there is a $3.00 entrance fee to the Baths.

The Baths at Virgin Gorda  are a great departure from your typical beach break. You can experience all the Baths have to offer in an action packed morning and still have time to see some of the sights in Tortola later in the afternoon. You can choose to swim, explore the terrain, or just relax at the Top of the Baths restaurant which has a patio and a pool during your visit.

What’s Missing

Booking the tour through the cruise line does limit how much time you get to spend at The Baths at Virgin Gorda (Although, we did not feel rushed). Depending on how long your ship is docked, you may want to head there on your own to maximize your time at the Baths. While you can find some websites with details on the different rock formations, you are on your own once you get to the Baths. There are a few staff members to assist travelers climbing over the boulders in the more difficult locations, but there are no guided tours.

Main Takeaway

This was our second trip to The Baths at Virgin Gorda, and we are glad we visited the beach again. It is certainly an exciting time and one of the best things to do in Tortola on a cruise . The excursion is ideal for families and solo travelers alike. The beaches are small, so getting there early is recommended. The best part is, you can still find time to explore the main island of Tortola if you do a morning excursion. Also, if you must see The Baths at Virgin Gorda , but are not traveling to Tortola, there are ferries that run from St. Thomas to Virgin Gorda. Albeit, they are limited, and the total travel time one-way is 1.5 hours.

Have you visited The Baths at Virgin Gorda during your stop in Tortola? Did you venture through the caves and boulders to make your way to Devil’s Bay? Drop us an anchor to tell us about your experiences at The Baths at Virgin Gorda or any other activity you enjoy to help your fellow cruisers make the most of their visit to Tortola.

Popular Things to Do in Tortola

Food and drink in tortola, beaches in tortola, find things to do in tortola on viator.

ncl excursions british virgin islands

Dishes often include a variety of seafood, chicken, and goat. Saltfish is also popular. Common side dishes include rice and peas, sweet potatoes, fried plantains, beans and lentils. Fresh fruits abound, like passion fruit, mango and soursop. A favorite dish is fungi, which is similar to polenta and is made from cornmeal and okra. Also popular is roti, a flatbread that is deep fried or stuffed with other ingredients, like lentils, curry and vegetables.

And don't forget the rum. The Painkiller -- a concoction of dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple and orange juices, topped with nutmeg -- is the signature drink of BVI. It originated at the Soggy Dollar Bar at White Bay on Jost Van Dyke.

Located steps from the port in Tortola Pier Park, you can enjoy lunch and drinks at Myett's Chill Zone (tacos, wings, pizza and the like), Mac's Restaurant (wraps, rotis and salads), Seven at the Pier (upscale spot with mainly Caribbean and Asian fare) or at a number of casual food stands located along the waterfront, offering everything from samosas to French fries.

Other popular spots to dine on the island include Pusser's Road Town Pub and Company Store , where visitors can enjoy casual dining in a fun atmosphere at this chain, which has outposts throughout the BVI. Sit on the outdoor porch and enjoy jerk pork and chicken, burgers and fish and chips. Make sure you order the Painkiller, the national drink of the BVI (284-494-2467; open from 9 a.m. daily).

Located at Cane Garden Bay, Quito's Gazebo serves excellent salads and grilled seafood, but the superstar on the menu is the roti (a West Indian wrap with a curried filling of chicken, conch or vegetables), considered by locals to be one of the best in the islands (Quito Luxury Inn; 284-495-4837; open from 11:30 a.m. Tuesday to Sunday).

Best for Families:  Cane Garden Bay Beach is a beautiful stretch of white sand on Tortola's north shore, about a 25-minute taxi ride from the pier in Road Town. It's a popular spot for families because of its clear, calm water, restaurants and water sports. You can rent chairs, umbrellas, standup paddleboards, kayaks and Jet Skis on the beach. There are several spots to dine and drink, as well. It gets crowded around midday, so the earlier you arrive, the better.

Best for Snorkeling:  Taxi drivers are familiar with snorkeling hot-spot Brewer's Bay. It is lovely and secluded; however, the bay can sometimes see dangerously high surf and rip currents during winter months. You'll also spot an old sugar mill and the ruins of a rum distillery there.

Best for Beach Bums:  Smuggler's Cove is the perfect beach for quiet relaxation because it's located on the far western end of the island and a bit difficult to get to. Many visitors opt for a more convenient beach, so it might be just you and the locals.

Best for Surfing:  For the dedicated surfer, try Apple Bay. Surfing conditions vary but are generally best in January and February. It's a small beach that gets crowded when the surf is good. Boards can be rented at HIHO (284-494-7694) in Road Town.

Don't Miss in Tortola

Jost Van Dyke:  Named for a pirate (as legend has it), this pristine island lies to the northwest of Tortola. It has a lovely sand beach at White Bay and a popular beachside bar. Ferry service is offered from West End by New Horizon Ferry Service (284-499-0952). It takes about 45 minutes each way to Jost Van Dyke.

Once on the island, many people head to Foxy's Bar in Great Harbour, a renowned beachside hangout serving West Indian specialties. Try the Sly Fox and Dread Fox, specialty house drinks made with Foxy's own rum. A major draw is Foxy Callwood himself, a legend in the BVI. A prolific songwriter and storyteller, he holds court most afternoons - offering, in addition to his regular repertoire, calypso tunes improvised on the spot, featuring specifics about his individual audience members, maybe even you.

Due to damage from Hurricane Irma, Sandcastle, a hotel on White Bay remains closed, but its world-famous watering hole, the Soggy Dollar Bar, has reopened. The Soggy Dollar is the birthplace of the Painkiller. You can also grab flying fish sandwiches and rotis here for lunch.

Virgin Gorda:  The main draws there are Virgin Gorda's yacht clubs, natural beauty and upscale resorts, including the famous Bitter End Yacht Club, which while still not open due to hurricane damage, is in the process of rebuilding. Virgin Gorda is also home to the famous rock formations called the Baths. A popular tourist destination, these large volcanic boulders sit on a stretch of beach on the southern end of the island. They form grottos, caves and pools where visitors can snorkel and explore.

Speedy's Ferry Service (284-495-5235) and Smith's Tortola Fast Ferry run frequent ferries between Road Town and Spanish Town, Virgin Gorda. Depending on the vessel and weather, allow between an hour and 90 minutes for passage.

Helicopter Tours:  For a different perspective, see Tortola and the BVI by air. Antilles Helicopter Services is a BVI-based company that provides scenic helicopter tours starting at $90/person. (Beef Island Airport 284-441-7335)

Private Yachts:  There is no shortage of sailing yachts available for full-day or half-day trips. These excursions usually include a sail across the Sir Francis Drake Channel to one of the islands to the south of Tortola and normally feature snorkeling, beach time and lunch either onboard or at a shoreside restaurant.

Prominent charter operators sail from Road Harbour or the nearby Village Cay Marina. Patouche Charters (Road Harbour; 284-443-9763) offers sailings on a 50-foot schooner, a 36-foot catamaran or a 28-foot Bertram power boat. Aristocat Charters (Soper's Hole, West End, or Village Cay, Road Town; 284-499-1249) offers day sails and snorkel trips to the surrounding islands on its two 45-foot catamarans.

Scuba Diving:  Operators offer two-tank morning dives. Contact individual dive operators for the availability of "discover Scuba" programs for non-certified divers. The British Virgin Islands offer some of the best Scuba diving in the Caribbean. Of special interest is the wreck of the RMS Rhone, sunk in a hurricane in 1867 and considered by many to be among the top 10 wreck dives in the world.

Also worthy of exploration are the many reefs off the coast of Tortola and the neighboring islands. Dive operators serving the Road Harbour area include Blue Water Divers (Nanny Cay, West End; 284-494-2847 and Sail Caribbean Divers (Hodges Creek, East End; 284-541-3483).

Sage Mountain:  Tortola's national park, Sage Mountain, is crisscrossed with well-marked hiking trails. Hook up with a ranger for a guided walking tour to explore great scenery and views of the sea.

Mount Sage is set at the highest point of the island, some 1,716 feet (523 meters) above sea level. Hike up Sage Mountain to the peak, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the neighboring islands and the Caribbean’s turquoise waters.

The path provides a well-marked and moderately challenging route, making it suitable for people of all fitness levels. Make sure to wear suitable hiking shoes and bring water with you to remain hydrated on your hike.

Popular activities at Sage Mountain include not only the thrilling hike but also the opportunity to discover the unique ecosystem of the national park. The trail winds through lush rainforests, showcasing a variety of plant species, including exotic orchids and towering mahogany trees. Birdwatchers will surely appreciate the chance to spot local and migratory birds along the way.

5. Jost Van Dyke Island

Embark on a nautical adventure to Jost Van Dyke, a serene island paradise and an oasis of laid-back charm located north of Tortola. One of the main attractions of Jost Van Dyke is the renowned White Bay , a stretch of pristine beach known for its powdery white sands and crystal-clear waters.

Spend your day unwinding on the beach, basking in the sun, and taking refreshing dips in the Caribbean Sea. The tranquil ambiance of White Bay will surely give you the perfect setting for relaxation and rejuvenation.

The island is also famous for its iconic beach bars, with the Soggy Dollar Bar standing out as a must-visit destination. This iconic bar earned its name from the tradition of customers paying for drinks with wet banknotes after swimming ashore at the bar.

For those looking for a little adventure, consider hiking to the Bubbly Pool , a natural rock formation where waves crash into a shallow pool, creating bubbly bubbles. It’s a unique and delightful spot that adds a touch of adventure to your Jost Van Dyke experience.

To get to Jost Van Dyke, you can either book a guided excursion or take a ferry from the West End (West End is a peninsula located on Tortola’s southwestern tip, about a 30-minute drive from Tortola cruise terminal). The New Horizon Ferry runs ferries between the West End and Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke and the ride takes about 30 minutes one way.

6. Callwood Rum Distillery

A visit to the Callwood Rum Distillery, a hidden gem about 20-30 minutes away from the Tortola cruise port, will take you on an adventure through Caribbean history. Callwood, one of the region’s oldest distilleries, welcomes you to experience the intriguing world of rum production against the backdrop of magnificent island surroundings.

Immerse yourself in the rich history of this distillery, where traditional rum-making processes have been passed down through generations. Stroll through the rural settings and observe the historic copper stills and barrels that have been used in the production of the famed Callwood rum.

One of the best things to do at Callwood is to take a guided tour, where knowledgeable staff members share insights into the distillation process and the distillery’s historical significance. Learn about the art of aging rum in oak barrels, the selection of local sugarcane, and the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into every bottle.

Finish your tour with a tasting session where you may sample all of the flavors of Callwood rum. From smooth and aged varieties to spiced and flavored options, the distillery has something for everyone! Don’t forget to purchase a bottle of your favorite mix to take home as a tasty souvenir of your Caribbean adventure!

7. Road Town

Last but not least, explore the vibrant capital of Tortola, Road Town, which is within an easy 5-10 minute walk from the Tortola cruise dock. Here, a wide range of experiences awaits, blending local culture, history, and shopping delights.

Start your exploration with a leisurely stroll along Main Street , where you’ll encounter a charming collection of shops, boutiques, and cafés. From stylish boutiques offering unique fashions to charming cafes serving local delights, Main Street provides a diverse range of experiences for every visitor.

For a taste of local arts and crafts, make sure to visit the Crafts Alive Village . This bustling market showcases the talents of local artisans, offering a vibrant array of handmade souvenirs, jewelry, and traditional Caribbean crafts. Engage with the artisans, discover unique pieces, and take home a souvenir of your time in Road Town.

Ultimate Guide to a Caribbean Cruise with NCL

adventure couple snorkeling with underwater sculpture at clifton heritage national park in the carribean

Whether you’re a tropical destination lover, or you’re just trying to escape the winter snow, a Caribbean cruise should be added to you adventure bucket list. We had both never been on a cruise together, and never really considered ourselves avid cruise fans, but after this week on the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Encore, we definitely agree that cruising is an awesome way to go about adventure travel.

Getting on the Ship from Miami

Covid testing & cruising requirements .

It’s important to note, every cruise line and every port of call is handling embarkation procedures with the pandemic differently and requirements are constantly changing. Make sure to keep your eyes on the updated regulations as your cruise dates near. As of our Caribbean cruise dates back in early December 2021, everyone on board the ship was required to be vaccinated.

Norwegian Cruise Line had partnered with CVS at the Miami port as well where everyone received a rapid COVID-19 Test before embarking. We didn’t have to wear masks as the whole cruise was vaccinated, however, requirements are changing in 2022 where you will have to wear a mask indoors regardless of vaccination status in January.

You simply fill out the paperwork when completing your e-documents once you purchase your cruise to schedule your on port appointment. Once you take your test, you wait for about 10-15 minutes for your results and then you finish up the embarkation process. It was super easy and seamless!

Sailing on the Norwegian Encore

Our Favorite Caribbean Cruise Shore Excursions & Activities

For our exact cruise itinerary, check out NCL’s website . They have an incredible array of options available in the Caribbean alone, let alone other destinations. We did the 7 Day Caribbean: Great Stirrup Cay & Tortola Sailing from Miami along the Norwegian Encore, the newest ship in their fleet. Check out the full list of available shore excursions for this cruise itinerary here .

Day #1: Embarkation in Miami (Half Day)

We highly recommend booking your Caribbean cruise shore excursions as the first thing you do once you get on the ship if you didn’t do so already! They fill up really quickly. Then, once you get all your bags to your rooms, we’d highly suggest walking around the whole ship and getting yourself acquainted with the layout of everything. Make sure to head up to the pool deck areas for Sail Away!

Day #2: Nassau, Bahamas

ncl excursions british virgin islands

We opted to take our own adventure for our first day at port from Nassau, Bahamas, Right next to the cruise ship, there are tons of options for transportation via taxi, scooter, etc. but we decided to rent a car from Budget Car Rental and drive to the other side of the island to Clifton Heritage National Park. If you make the trek over to this side of the island, make sure to allot yourself about 30-45 minutes of driving time each way. We decided to split a rental car so we knew we could get back to the cruise port with no problems, and it actually was cheaper than taking a taxi between four of us.

Most Caribbean cruises stopped offering this area as a shore excursion a few years ago due to an oil spill in the area, but the park is back and better than ever. It even has new conservation efforts in place to help save the remaining coral reefs and bringing about new ones through sinking sculptures. Although there’s no official excursion, it’s definitely easy to get over to the national park yourself!

Clifton Heritage National Park

ncl excursions british virgin islands

Clifton Heritage National Park is home to the largest underwater sculpture in the world. It also has some incredible cliff jumping, pristine beaches, and some of the bluest water in the world for snorkeling and swimming. We absolutely loved the staff at Clifton Heritage National Park, the guides there were a highlight of our visit. This was probably our favorite shore adventure throughout our whole cruise. If you get the chance, we’d definitely recommend checking out this National Park.

There is an entrance fee to enter and park. If you want to snorkel at the underwater sculpture park, you will have to pay an additional fee to go out there with a guide. You are no longer allowed to bring your own snorkel equipment and take off from their beach for a self guided tour since the water conditions can be dangerous. Even if you bring your own gear, you will have to pay the full snorkel tour fee, and you will be required to have a life safety device with you. You definitely need to be a strong swimmer to be able to be wading out in the ocean for an hour and for the 5-10 minute swims in and out from the beach.

Make sure to bring lots of sunscreen, a towel, water, swimsuits, and if you are wanting photos in the underwater sculpture garden, bring a GoPro or a waterproof phone case!

For all of our camera gear we brought with us on this trip, check out our camera gear blog .

Day 3 & 6 – Best Things to Do On Your Caribbean Cruise Sea Days

If you ever get the chance to take a trip along the Norwegian Encore for your Caribbean cruise, you are in for a special treat. The ship is the newest from NCL and has such a variety of activities on board that you almost forget you’re on a ship moving in the middle of the ocean on your sea days. On top of all the amazing Cruise Director led activities throughout everyday, we loved the specialty activities all throughout the ship.

ncl excursions british virgin islands

Go-Karting

The Go-Karting on board was honestly so cool. It’s pretty crazy to think you can just go go-kart racing in the middle of the ocean. We did about 3 rounds together around the race track and it was so much fun. You can watch from above on the Observation Deck even if you aren’t racing and shoot lasers at the karts to slow them down as they go by too.

Speaking of lasers, our favorite specialty activity they had on board hands down was Laser Tag. The NCL Encore has an outdoor Laser Tag arena that’s fairly large in size with a ton of cool areas to hide and sneak around. We opted to make our reservations at sunset which was so cool to watch the clouds light up while out playing laser tag with all of our new friends on board.

Visit the Spa for a Massage

Stephen and I opted to get a Couple’s Hot Rock Massage while on board and it was magical. We’d definitely recommend checking out the spa. But, beware, as the staff will try to hard sell you on things after you are all done.

Check out the Thermal Spa

ncl excursions british virgin islands

The Thermal Spa reminded us so much of the Sky Lagoon in Iceland. It features jacuzzis, hot chairs to relax, two different saunas, a steam room, a salt room, and a snow room. It’s almost impossible to not feel relaxed in the Thermal Spa on the Encore.

Ride the Waterslides (*Free)

The waterslides are not only for the kids! The NCL Encore has two on board, one that is more for those that like thrills, and one that is a relaxing tube slide. Giselle got stuck on the extreme one, but they do have an emergency door if for some reason you get stuck on the slide (aka you don’t have enough momentum going into the turns). Overall, Stephen rode these things like 10 times and loved every time.

Participate in a Game Show (*Free)

Although we didn’t get selected for the couples game show on board, we were drawn to participate in a Trivia Game Show in the ship’s Atrium. Every night, they always have some sort of game show or quiz/trivia activity in the main gathering area.

Our Favorite Restaurants & Bars On Board the Ship

When dining on board a cruise ship, the nice thing is that it’s an all inclusive dining package for the most basic buffet (which includes A LOT of really great food!). The one thing we loved about NCL was how amazing the food and drinks were consistently. We would highly recommend investing in the Premium Plus Beverage Package because you can really get a bang for your buck on a 7 day cruise. We also bought the 7 day specialty dining package, so we could try 1 specialty restaurant on board per day. Here were our favorites!

Teppanyaki Grill

This was by far our favorite restaurant on board. The energy of the chefs was contagious and the food was so delicious. Come hungry, you’ll get a ton of food!

Food Republic

This is the Norwegian Encore’s sushi restaurant on board and it did not disappoint. The dishes are served tapas style so you will not have a shortage of food to choose from. You get 5 items included in your Specialty Dining package if you choose to buy one, and there’s a range of selections from edamame, rolls, teriyaki chicken, and more.

French Restaurant

This restaurant is a little bit fancier than the other specialty restaurants, so it makes for a nice date night dinner. I had the French Onion Soup and the Chicken and Stephen had the Escargot and Veal and it was all amazing. We would recommend going here over the Steakhouse on Board if you’re looking for delicious, flavorful meat that melts in your mouth.

Mojito Bar

The Mojito Bar was probably our favorite bar on board. They have a variety of flavor options and everyone we tried was fantastic. We highly recommend trying the Jalapeno Cucumber, Pineapple, and/or the Classic Mojito.

Although Starbucks is available on land, it was so nice to have on board. The best part was if you have the Premium Plus Beverage Package, you can get as many Starbucks drinks as you want on board the ship without any additional cost. This was the most fun way to be able to try a ton of different new drinks without having to feel bad about paying the extra penny each time you get a coffee.

Day #4: St. Thomas

St. Thomas is a gem of the Caribbean. It’s definitely our favorite island in terms of things to do along our Caribbean cruise itinerary. We’d highly recommend checking out a snorkel, Discovery Scuba, or SNUBA shore excursion with NCL on this island. St. Thomas has some of the bluest and warmest water in the world so it’s the perfect spot to jump in the water.

Checkout NCL’s St. Thomas Shore Excursions Here

If you are looking for more of a day of relaxing, St. Thomas has a plethora of incredible beaches for you.

Top Beaches in St. Thomas

Magens Bay was probably our favorite beach to snorkel around St. Thomas. There were tons of people there since it’s a very popular beach, but if you walk all the way down to the end of the beach, you will basically have it all to yourself! You can either visit through one of Norweigian’s Shore Excursions, or, you can rent a car and drive over to the beach by yourself.

ncl excursions british virgin islands

Coki Beach definitely had the most beautiful water on the whole island that we encountered, BUT it was also the most busy beach we went to. Make sure to get there right away when you disembark if you want to find a spot to chill out and lounge all day. We arrived after we checked out Magen’s Bay and it was really packed. The water is to die for though. The clarity is truly something else and it’s so warm for swimming and snorkeling around. They offer tons of activities off of this beach like snorkeling and scuba diving.

Sapphire Beach

Sapphire Beach was really nice for snorkeling as well. It was much less busy than Coki Beach and Magen’s Bay when we visited too.

ncl excursions british virgin islands

Or, if you have hitting the beautiful beaches of U.S. Virgin Islands National Park on your bucket list, you can take a short ferry over to the neighboring island of St. John to go explore over there!

Other Things To Do in St. Thomas

ncl excursions british virgin islands

Take A Ride Up The Sky Tram

If you want great views without the extra effort of a hike or drive around the island, check out the St. Thomas Sky Tram! It provides incredible panoramic views of the whole island, especially for sunset.

Enjoy the Views at Drake’s Seat

Drake’s Seat is one of the tallest points on the island and also makes for a great overlook for sunset and photos. You can either rent a car or get a taxi up here.

Day #5: Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Top 2 things to do in tortola.

ncl excursions british virgin islands

Check out the Virgin Gorda Baths

We didn’t get the chance to make it out to Virgin Gorda Baths because the Shore Excursion was so popular it was booked before we could do so. However, it’s an incredible national park area with stunning water and cool rock formations.

Sail out to Treasure Island (aka Norman Island) & Snorkel

We had a great time on our Sail & Snorkel Excursion at Tortola. As we were sailing, we booked this one through the Shore Excursion Desk last minute and were really happy we ended up going! It took about an hour to sail out to Treasure Island, but it was beautiful sunny weather all the way out there. We got to snorkel in about 3 caves and then made a second stop at a private cove where we snorkeled with turtles and stingrays!

ncl excursions british virgin islands

Day 7: Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s Private Island

Snorkel out to ncl’s own underwater sculpture garden.

Similar to the underwater sculpture garden in Nassau, NCL has their very own one right in the island’s backyard! It’s about a 5 minute snorkel from the shore to get out to the garden. If you don’t bring your own snorkel equipment (which we highly recommend you do, it saves you a ton of money throughout your cruise), you can rent some from the shore excursions desk on land! We highly recommend doing this and there’s no additional fee, plus, you can see tons of fish and even stingrays.

ncl excursions british virgin islands

SUP & Kayak Around the Cay

For those that aren’t as keen on snorkeling and swimming, NCL offers SUP and Kayak rentals as well! Enjoy the pristine turquoise waters of the island via paddling around!

Go Swimming with the Pigs

This was a super fun, family-friendly experience on Norwegian’s Private Island. You take a short little water taxi from Great Stirrup Cay to the other side of the island where there is a pig sanctuary. You can feed them apples and swim around with them for about an hour! It was honestly pretty crowded and there were only 9-10 pigs, but we still had a great time and if you love animals, you’d have a lot of fun on this shore excursion .

ncl excursions british virgin islands

Rent a Cabana or Villa

Chill out in luxury with one of the private Cabanas or Villas on the island. There are tons of chairs on the public beaches as well, but you will have more access to the other lagoons on the island with a cabana rental.

ncl excursions british virgin islands

Check out the Moet & Chandon Bar

For a range of delicious cocktails and ultimate relaxation, order a drink from the Moet & Chandon Bar!

Disembarkation in Miami

Disembarkation of our Caribbean Cruise was super smooth. Everyone gets off the ship based on luggage tag colors and the process was really seamless. We had our last breakfast on board the ship and said goodbye to a wonderful week at sea.

Overall, we had an amazing experience on our 7 Day Miami to Caribbean Cruise and would absolutely recommend anyone who is looking to explore the Caribbean islands to book a cruise with NCL for a guaranteed fun time.

NCL Escape Virgin Gorda and the Baths review

By RobinSie , June 14, 2017 in Tortola

Recommended Posts

Cool Cruiser

Our family DH, DS10, DD 12, DS31, DS's GF and I sailed the week of 6/3 on the Escape. We chose to purchase this tour from NCL since time is very limited in Tortola. We were all supposed to go, but due to my DS10 not feeling well, he and DH stayed on the ship.

We gathered at 7am, with about a hundred or so of our shipmates, and boarded a ferry for a 35 minute ride, which took us to a port where we boarded an open-air shuttle. The ferry had open-air seating up top and comfy inside seating in a/c. When the shuttle dropped us off we took a fairly short hike to Devil's Bay. The water was beautifully clear and the sand white and fluffy. Unfortunately with not a lot of time, 20-25 minutes is all we got to spend here. It was then on to the much anticipated Baths. Since that was what all the hype was about, and Devil's Bay was so amazing, my expectations were really high...in fact they were way too high.

The description clearly explains that this excursion is for those who are fairly fit. It should also explain it is for those who can fit in tight spaces. If you have bad knees, bad hips, a bad back, claustrophobia, or extra girth, there are probably more suitable excursions. This became apparent as we spent a very long time in line waiting our turn climb up and down rocks, narrow ladders and through very tight spaces. When we finally made it through, the beach was nice, but not nearly as nice as Devil's Bay. The water was clear, but the sand was not wonderful, soft, fluffy kind that we just left. There was a small bar area for drinks, and a place to buy little souvenirs. By the time we got there, we again only had about 20 minutes.

The guide gave us the whistle signal that it was time to go. We walked up a pathway and back to the shuttle area. Our family all wished that we had just gone down the path to get to the beach in the first place. We were served rum punch, fruit punch or water at the top of the path. We then boarded the shuttle and then the ferry to get back to the ship.

Our family all agreed that this excursion was overall disappointing and not worthy of the high price tag.

Thanks for your report, and sorry your day wasn't more enjoyable! It's too bad you went in the opposite direction and couldn't enjoy Devil's Bay after exploring the grottoes, not sure why the group was directed that way? But as you said there wasn't a lot of time for that anyway. And it is unfortunate that enjoying the Baths from a cruise ship - whether through the ship or on your own - is a challenge because of the number of people. On a short port day, even going on your own you aren't able to avoid the crowds because there isn't enough time to adjust your itinerary. It's a shame NCL doesn't allow more time in port at Tortola because there are so many beautiful places to enjoy if time allows.

But thanks again for your candid report, and I hope you haven't crossed Tortola and the other islands of the BVI off your list? A future land vacation is definitely worth looking at, and that gives you the opportunity of visiting different areas at your own pace.

redmomof4

This breaks my heart because its the one excursion that my husband and daughter are excited about.

Redmomof4 there are many more rave reviews than like this one, and people tend to take the time to leave negative reports more than glowing reports. So don't be too disheartened as the Baths can be a great experience, and going on your own can be a much better choice because you are not tied to a larger group following a guide, just our opinion. The ferries are very reliable and going on your own is quite safe.

Enjoy your cruise!

  • 2 weeks later...

How much did this excursion cost through NCL? (It isn't listed for my December Escape cruise yet.)

I think it's $89 through NCL. We did it on our own, easily, for $38 pp. one of our best days. Everyone loved the Baths!

If you go to the Baths - head to side that is more commercial and (I believe it's the right side) -- walk down the path and ignore everything and start walking through the rocks to get to the other beach -- which is by far AMAZING and I would have rather spent all my time there. However, since you are going through the Baths, you must at least go through the rocks.

There are some places with tight spaces to squeeze through, so don't have a huge backpack -- I saw some people taking baby strollers, etc...

Any ways, it's a one time thing for sure. But the beach on the other side is so much nicer.

That is too funny!

We did the Baths and had an awesome time. We hooked up with a Dion on Tortola who had his own personal boat and dropped us off right on the beach in front of the Baths. From there we walked through the Baths and up to the top. We were in our late 50's when we did this. The boat came back to the beach and we had to swim back to the boat which was not difficult for us. It cost us $50 per person. The boat ride over was about 25 minutes. No need to book with ship and waste time waiting in line. Plus with the ships excursion you have to take a bus over. With going with Dion, we had a lot more time to spend exploring.

Three cruise passengers jump ship during a port stop in British Virgin Islands

Picture of Frank M

  • March 25, 2024

Mystery surrounds the whereabouts of three cruise ship guests who failed to return to their ship after a shore visit in the British Virgin Islands earlier this month.

Two cruise ships docked at a port in the British Virgin Islands with passengers walking along the pier.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force and the BVI Department of Immigration seek information from the public to locate the three Colombian nationals.

Public Advisory Issued in BVI

MIA Columbian Nationals

Earlier this week, Jean Carlo Ospina Cano, Pamela Mesa Escobar, and Yesica Yojana Marin Ramirez went ashore at Tortola but didn’t return to the Norwegian Sky cruise ship . The ship eventually departed and is currently on its next cruise.

A guest sailing on Sky during the event sent a tip line inquiry, leading us to contact NCL for validation.

The Norwegian Sky cruise ship turning around in PortMiami.

The Norwegian Sky is sailing a series of Caribbean cruises out of La Romana, Dominican Republic. The three missing guests were on a 14-night sailing trip called to numerous ports, including Aruba, Curacao, Barbados, and St. Kitts.

The British Virgin Islands is a safe destination with a relatively low crime rate.
