Why book a shore excursion with us?

I have selected the highest quality shore excursion from Southampton delivered by a local in the most cost-effective manner for my customers. Since we are not a large cruise line catering to thousands of customers per day, our cruise excursion package allows you to travel as a private group offering a more personalized experience.

Private Shore Excursions  allow you to travel with your party alone and to fully customize your shore tour.  We have a recommended itinerary for your tour with us but we are happy to work with you to create the perfect itinerary customized to you.

Why tour with us?

What makes us different.

At Southampton Tours we know where to go to get off the beaten track so that you get to experience places that only the locals know about. We are also very passionate about the service that we provide and always try to go the extra mile wherever we can. We genuinely enjoy doing what we do and meeting people from all over the world. We are very flexible on tours. We know that some people may prefer to go at a slow relaxed pace soaking up the atmosphere. Whereas others may prefer to go at a faster pace in order to see more places. We know that everyone is different and so we work with you before and during the tour to guarantee the experience is truly memorable.

LOWER PRICES THAN THE CRUISE LINES

Cruise line tours are notoriously expensive, and for groups of 4 or more, we can usually arrange a private shore excursion for less than the cost of a large cruise line tour.

HIGHER QUALITY THAN THE CRUISE LINES

We are fully focused on delivering excellent experiences and our excursions are higher quality than those offered by the Cruise Lines that routinely travel with more than 50 people per tour. In contrast we offer private tours with a maximum of 8 individuals per guide, offering a far more personalized and enjoyable experience. We are committed to offering you the best excursions at the best prices so you will thoroughly enjoy your journey with us.

GUARANTEED RETURN TO SHIP

We are very experienced in running shore excursions and have never had a customer miss their ship. In the extremely unlikely event that you miss your ship due to the late arrival of one of our tours, we will arrange and pay for your accommodations, meals, and transportation to the next port of call.

PRIVATE TOURS FROM SOUTHAMPTON CRUISE TERMINAL

Booking a private tour with Southampton Tours gives you the flexibility to visit your chosen destinations at your own pace, with the benefit of expert advice and guidance when planning your trip.

LOCAL GUIDES

Ian has lived and worked in Southern England for many years. During that time he has discovered many fascinating places and stories which only a local would know about. He would love to share these with you! He has also been lucky to travel the world living in many countries abroad. He has met many different types of people and cultures. He has also worked as tour operators for one of the worlds most discerning travel agents Audley Travel.

He knows that a tour is not just a case of tick off as many places as you can, so that you can update Facebook. This may be part of it but the difference comes in understanding the pace of a tour and the comfort. We won’t be rushing around stressed. We will be taking it at the right pace for you, giving time to enjoy each village and area we see.

If that’s not enough then how about because you can get to spend time with me – Ian. I run the business and I am very passionate with many an interesting story to tell. You can ask me how I survived on my cycle from London to Cape Town? I genuinely want you to have a wonderful time so I work as hard for you as I can to make it a day to remember. I always do my best to go the extra mile

Testimonials

Blown away by the breathtaking beauty of it all.

I'm buzzing about this fantastic company & highly recommend you book a tour before they're all sold out! After the partying (to celebrate passing my uni course) the tour really was the perfect way to unwind & explore. Now feeling energised, happy & totally ready to smash the week ahead at work. Thank you once again Graham & Ian for an incredible experience. I loved every moment of it! xx

The highlight of our trip to England!

We had a spectacular private tour in the Cotswolds by our guide Ian, who was friendly and knowledgable and willing to meet the needs of our diverse 9 person group! Besides the main tourist stops we requested, he brought us to a few other charming villages he thought we would like, which turned out to be our favorites! Absolutely beautiful! We were fortunate to have a sunny gorgeous day, add to that a luxury minivan (upcharge but so worth it), with door to door service from our Oxford hotel, and we couldn't have asked for anything more! It was a perfect ending on our last day in England! Our entire group was extremely happy and wishing we had more time! We will definitely recommend this tour to anyone, and will be sure to contact Ian and Graham again for any future bookings!

Absolutely the best tour we have taken

We were an adult family of 8. M husband and I have travelled extensively all over the world, with and without family members, by far, this was the absolute best tour we have taken, not just because the Cotswolds are beautiful (and we have been here before), but the overall quality of this private tour.

You must see this place!

Be sure to see the Cotswolds! This was my favorite place during my recent three-week tour of the UK. I'd read about the Cotswolds and was excited to see the area, but it really surpassed all my expectations! My initial inclination was to spend a few nights at a B&B although I decided against this due to the lack of public transportation...such an option is only good if you have a car. Our bus was a small one - only eight passengers plus the driver, Graham. Big buses apparently aren't allowed into many Cotswold locations, so this turned out to be a real benefit (in additional to the personal attention and ease of getting around)., I'd worried that we wouldn't see much in the course of a day but we did get a really good taste of it. Graham was quite knowledgeable and personable. Strongly recommended! Graham will likely show you the burial place for some of the Mitford Sisters and will give you a most interesting discourse on them. One of the first things I did upon returning home was to research them on the web. It would be good to know something about them before you go to the Cotswolds as they are a fascinating bunch and you'll really appreciate seeing where they grew up! As for Graham and the tour company, everything was wonderful!

                  Stonehenge

English Heritage. A World heritage Site

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Stonehenge -  Probably one of the most recognisable monuments in the world. The 5000 year old henge monument became a  World Heritage Site in 1986 and is managed by English Heritage. Despite years of research and study the reason behind the construction of Stonehenge remains a mystery.

Stonehenge is a perfect shore excursion and a favourite tour for cruise ship passengers.

Location and route - Most other operators, including coaches, use the direct and sterile main highway A to B route. Your tour with Southampton Cruise Tours starts, from the time you board, not when you arrive at Stonehenge.

Travel Time   Southampton Cruise Termina l -  About an hour. The Southampton cruise ship excursion route offers a relax and countryside scenic experience with plenty to see on the way. Via Salisbury, Old Sarum and pretty thatched cottaged villages that line the River Avon that offer a great stop for a photo opportunity and to see the swans and ducks.

Heathrow - About an hour and a half travel using the direct main highway route. The relaxing scenic route awaits to Southampton.

Central London - Two to three hours.

Old Sarum & The Woodfords

Old Sarum

Discover the story of the original Salisbury, 2 miles north of where the city stands now. The mighty Iron Age hill fort at Old Sarum was where the first cathedral once stood and the Romans, Normans and Saxons have all left their mark.

Old Sarum is on route from Southampton to Stonehenge via Salisbury.

Generally a tour of Stonehenge does not stop at the site due to due to available time and time sensitive entry to Stonehenge.

However, if time allows and weather permitting, you may wish to pay a visit for photos and views across to Salisbury. The Old Sarum site is subject to an entry fee and operated by English heritage.

Of course, your tour can be adapted to fit a visit by adding it to the itinerary.

The Southampton Cruise Tour route passes Old Sarum and then deviates from the main route through the villages that make up the Woodfords and line the River Avon.

Visitors' Centre

Visitors' Centre Shuttle Bus Service

In 2014 the whole Stonehenge experience was transformed with a new Visitors' Centre located about a mile and a half from the stones. Incorporating modern technology to educate and inform making the Stonehenge learning experience interesting and engaging.

Knowledgable staff are on hand to enhance your visit. Ample shuttle buses adds continuity to and from the stones with audio commentary of adjacent historical points of interest.

A path around the Stonehenge give a 360 degree view with informative notices, plenty of photo opportunities and audi prompts for multi lingual tours.

I'm sure you will gain lots of additional questions for the return shuttle bus ride back to the Visitors' Centre.

The Visitors' Centre comprises of all that you will need to compliment your experience.

A modern Exhibition Area filled with a variety of artifacts, information boards and interactive displays.

Cafe for lights snacks (hot and cold) with Rest Rooms.

Souvenir Shop.

An hour is normally adequate at the Visitors' Centre.

Stone Circle & Henge

southampton tour stonehenge

Shuttle buses run every few minutes from and to the 'stones' taking about five minutes along the private road to the Stop at the entrance.

Take your time around a one way walkway for photos and look out for the numbered posts located at points of interest. Your Audio Guide will tell you all about particular points of interest.

Generally access is all around the Stone Circle with about 75% covered surface suitable for wheelchairs.

An hour at the 'stones' is normally adequate.

Your Local Personal Chauffeur

Whilst personal drivers are not qualified guides they have nonetheless accrued interesting knowledge and experience from frequent visits. Tripadvisor Customer Feedback will, hopefully, reassure prospective passengers of an enjoyable and informative driver experience.

Your local personal driver will be available for recommendations and guidance of how to make the best of your Stonehenge visit.

Generally, your personal driver will familiarise guests with facilities at the Visitors' Centre before boarding the shuttle bus. Remaining at the centre the driver will await your return.

An ideal tour on route to London City and Heathrow Airport.

Tips & Recommendations

Booking your tickets - Pre-book using the English Heritage website. This guarantees entry at your arrival time. Tickets not included in the Southampton Cruise Tour Price.

Time of Visit -  Stonehenge is very popular at certain times of the year and visitor volume can affect your enjoyment. Southampton Cruise Tours can advice for best visiting times.

Dress up for the Cold -  Stoenhenge is located on exposed open countryside on top of a hill. At certain times of the year it can be cold wet and windy. Always bring warm clothing and wet weather gear. You can always leave them in the car if not needed. Umbrellas can be supplied but not much use in the wind.

Audio Guide or Not - Audio Guides are supplied with an added charge. Often, guests are happy not to use them but reply upon the information supplied at the Exhibition Area. You could share an Audio Guide between you. Alternatively, download the free Stonehenge app on your phone.

What to do first -  Upon arrival your personal driver will introduce you to the Visitors' Centre facilities rest rooms, ticket kiosk and Audio Guides, cafe, souvenir shop, Exhibition Area and shuttle bus stop.

At all times you will know where your driver is or where he can be found.

After presenting your printed website take the shuttle bus to the 'stones' as avoiding the lines and crowds makes for a better experience. Upon your return, the Exhibition Area can answer any questions you may have and provide more to the story of the history of Stonehenge.

Combination Tours -  The most popular tour combination is Stoenhenge with Salisbury Cathedral and city. A 6 hour hire period from Southampton. Ideal for returning to your cruise ship for 3-4pm.

Experts claim breakthrough in ancient 4000-Year-Old Stonehenge tool kit puzzle

' src=

Archaeologists say a 4,000-year-old tool kit found among the grave of a Bronze Age spiritual leader was used for working with gold.

  • A Bronze Age burial site in Wiltshire contained the skeletons of two people
  • One was buried with stone and metal artefacts indicating they were a shaman
  • Scientists have analysed these and found traces of gold on the surface
  • This suggests the shaman was also a skilled goldsmith and metalworker

The stone tool kit was found near Stonehenge more than two centuries ago but its use until now has been unknown.

Archaeologists from the University of Leicester detected traces of gold on their surface, indicating they were once used as hammers or anvils for metalworking. Pictured: Gold traces on stone used for polishing and smoothing

Researchers at the University of Leicester have re-examined grave goods discovered within the burial and found they were gold-working tools.

Has the mystery of Stonehenge finally been solved? A new study suggests that Stonehenge once served as a solar calendar.

  • Researchers argues that the design of Stonehenge was one big solar calendar
  • The entire site was the physical representation of one month, lasting 30 days
  • One theory is Stonehenge served as an ancient calendar, although others exist

Research showed the stones were added about 2500BC and remained in the same formation, indicating they worked as a single unit such as a calendar. Join us on a Stonehenge tour and hear all the latest theories

southampton tour stonehenge

Professor Timothy Darvill said the Wiltshire stone circle’s layout served as a physical representation of the year.

He said the research indicated “the site was a calendar based on a tropical solar year of 365.25 days”.

Although the origins of the site remain a mystery, in a paper published in the journal Antiquity, Prof Darvill deduced that the stones are displayed to represent a solar year of 365.25 days and were once used to help people keep track of time.

His analysis also includes new finds about the site’s history, along with analysis of other ancient calendar systems.

The prehistorian, who works at Bournemouth University, said that “the clear solstitial alignment of Stonehenge has prompted people to suggest that the site included some kind of calendar since the antiquarian William Stukeley.

“Now, discoveries brought the issue into sharper focus and indicate the site was a calendar based on a tropical solar year of 365.25 days.”

The significance of the layout is highlighted during the Winter and Summer solstices, when the sun is framed by the same stones every time.

The solstitial alignment helps to calibrate the calendar and any errors would be easily detectable as the sun would be in the wrong place during the biannual event.

Professor Darvill said: “The proposed calendar works in a very straightforward way. Each of the 30 stones in the sarsen circle represents a day within a month, itself divided into three weeks each of 10 days.”

The solar calendar was developed in eastern Mediterranean countries after 3000BC and adopted in Egypt as the Civil Calendar around 2700BC. It was widely used around 2600BC, at the start of the Old Kingdom.

This information raises the possibility that the calendar that Stonehenge tracks may be influenced by other cultures.  SOURCE

The World of Stonehenge. A must-see exhibition featuring stunning treasures from the British Neolithic. Visit the exhibition and Stonehenge on the same day.

British museum unveils treasures at centre of new exhibition on neolithic period.

The forthcoming exhibition at the  British Museum  will celebrate the iconic megalithic monument Stonehenge in what the institution promises to be a “landmark show.” It can’t include Stonehenge, of course, but our private guided Stonehenge tours can depart from the museum and take you directly to the monument itself.

The World of Stonehenge  is at the British Museum, London, from 17th February to 17th July 2022 and will surprisingly be the first time ever that the legendary site has served as the subject of a major event at the massive and prestigious museum. In keeping with that momentous occasion, curators putting the exhibition together have reportedly amassed a staggering array of artifacts, including approximately 250 pieces that have been loaned to the event from institutions throughout Europe and the UK.

A key part of the collection, this 4,000-year-old Bronze Age timber structure has been nicknamed the Stonehenge of the Sea after it re-emerged on a Norfolk beach in 1998. It consists of a large upturned tree stump surrounded by 54 wooden posts. The oak posts, some up to 3m tall and form a 6.6m-diameter circle around the upturned oak, creating a giant tree-like spectacle. A narrow entranceway was built aligning to the rising midsummer sun and it is speculated the monument was used for ritual purposes.

The aim is to set the stone monument – built 4,500 years ago, and one of the most recognisable sights in Europe – into the context of an era during which there was huge social and technological change.

This is a fiercely emotional exhibition, full of love for the people of the distant past. It even wants us to learn from them. The early agriculturalists who built the henges were communal, sharing feasts at a camp called  Durrington Walls  near Stonehenge. There are even remains from a party when early farmers and the last hunter-gatherers ate together, the hunters cooking venison they caught, the farmers serving beef from their herd. Many of our guided tours include Durrington Walls and Woodhenge as part of the package.

Visit Stonehenge on the Winter Solstice 2021 and mix with the Druids and Pagans. A truly magical experience!

The  December solstice  marks the longest night and shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and this year it falls on 22nd December

winter-sols

In ancient Pagan traditions, the  winter solstice  was a time to honor the cycles of life and death and celebrate the sun’s rebirth as the days would slowly begin to lengthen in the months leading into spring. Many modern practitioners of Pagan and earth-centered spiritual traditions observe the holiday, and at Stonehenge, the celebration is particularly special.

winter-solstice-tour

There is no  acce ss to the inner circle  at Stonehenge on  between the 18th and 27th December inclusive because of the  winter solstice . There is, however, open access on the morning of the 22nd December to watch the winter solstice sunrise which happens about 8.09am.  We are are offering our usual exclusive  guided Winter Solstice tour  that departs from London or Bath, pleae visit our  Stonehenge Tour website  for full details.

THE winter solstice: the shortest day and longest night of the year.

So what is so important about this date? What about it possesses people to dress in unicorn masks and visit Stonehenge?

Here, we take a look at just what the winter solstice is – and why a day with so little sunlight is worth celebrating.

What is the Winter Solstice?

The winter solstice is a phenomenon that marks the shortest day of the year. Often referred to as the official beginning of winter, the solstice generally only occurs for a moment.

The true solstice occurs when the Earth is tilted the furthest away from the Sun on its axis. Despite it only lasting a moment, the full day is recognised.

When is the Winter Solstice?

The winter solstice generally falls between December 20th and 23rd.  This means, for the UK, the sun will rise at 8.04am and set at 3.54pm – meaning we will have just 7 hours and 49 minutes of daylight. In 2021, it will fall on Wednesday, December 22nd.

A  winter solstice  also occurs in the Southern Hemisphere, with the day occurring in late June.

How is it celebrated?

The day is one that is celebrated by  pagans and druids , with rituals of rebirth performed throughout history on the day.

One of the biggest celebrations in the UK occurs at Stonehenge with crowds gathering to watch the sunrise on the morning of the winter solstice.

The crowds of devotees, often dressed for the occasion, regularly gather at the historic site.  It is just one of the many  pagan festivals , which include midwinter, midsummer and inbolc – the day that traditionally marks the start of spring.

The importance placed on the day comes from how people were previously so ecoenomically dependent on the seasons with straveation common in the first months of winter.

Will the days start to get longer?

After the solstice, the days will start to get longer.  The process is gradual, with minutes added everyday.

Join us on a  Stonehenge guided tour from London or Bath  and join the Pagan celebrations at sunrise on the Winter Solstice. This is a popular tour and shoule be booked in advance: Stonehenge Winter Solstice Tour

Stonehenge:

The prehistoric stone circles at Stonehenge are considered to be the most architecturally sophisticated in the world. They were built over 5,000 years ago and have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will be able to walk in a full circle around the stones (from behind a rope). Lots of information panels explain how these stones were discovered and offer theories about how they were built. You can also download an audio guide from the App Store.

One of the biggest mysteries that surround Stonehenge is why they were built. Whilst nobody is quite sure, there are plenty of theories. Some believe it’s an ancient burial site, whilst others claim it to be an ancient Druid temple.

Our Stonehenge tour from London to Southampton also includes entrance to the reconstructed Neolithic Village and Visitors Centre. See what life was like during Neolithic times, with reconstructed houses furbished with replica axes, pottery, and other artifacts. In the state-of-the-art Visitors Center, explore the many archaeological finds from the area. There is also a cafe on site serving hot and cold food.

Low slung and blinding in its whiteness, the Long Island home has aluminum railings and screens, or brise-soleils, inspired by French modernist architecture. “My approach to residential design is heavily influenced by the site and functionality of the house and the way the clients want to live,” Marino said in an email interview. “For this client, it’s a seasonal home, and I find that for second homes, clients are much more willing to entertain new ideas. We embraced an indoor-outdoor aesthetic where massive expanses of glass were used to connect views directly to the ocean.”

A 20-foot-high living space anchors the interior, together with a floating stair that links the lower and upper floors and an exposed steel bridge that connects the top story’s two wings. “It’s free and easy, not complicated,” Marino said. “The house almost disappears into the landscape.”
