The tea estates are high on my list and now I need to add spice plantations. The smaller owned plantations would be ideal to see the entire process, without crowds of people. The map really helps demonstrate how far apart everything is.

Thanks Ann. There are many treasures of India that people are unaware of. Nothing to be ashamed of. As far as I know the best quality tea and coffee produced in India are exported to the West because they are way too expensive for Indian markets.

India is really starting to grow on me, I am getting more and more intrigued. And to be honest, if I could afford one more, longer trip in 2020, it would probobly be to India 🙂

How did I manage a trip to Kerala but not know about Wayanad? Roaming around lakes, forests and tea plantations sounds heavenly. Would love to stay on a coffee plantation. If you can’t get a proper coffee there, where can you!

Hi Reshal, If you have 8 days you can easily spend 3 full days in Wayanad. After that you drive to Oooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal if you are into forests and hills. Or you can head south to the beaches. Feel free to reach out to me with more questions.

How to Plan a Trip to Wayanad

How to reach wayanad.

There is no railway station in Wayanad. The nearest junction is in Nilambur, 90KM away. The nearest major railhead is in Calicut, at 110KM. There are frequent trains to Calicut from all major towns of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, and other Indian metro cities. From Nilambur or Calicut, you can book a cab to reach the place.

The hill station is well-connected to all major cities in South India by road like Bangalore, Mysore, Coimbatore, Kozhikode, Kochi, Thrissur etc. There are regular state-run and private buses from Kozhikode to Wayanad , Mysore to Wayanad, and similarly to Wayanad from Chennai, Coimbatore etc. However, the safest and the most convenient way to reach this hill station is by booking a cab from your nearest city.

The nearest airport to the town is Calicut International Airport, at 93KM from the main town. You can travel from any other major city/town in India to Calicut. From there, you can book an airport taxi or rent a car to reach Wayanad.

Tucked in the hills of Western Ghats, the weather is enjoyable and conducive all through the year. However, the rainy season from July to September can be dangerous to travel the steep terrain. About Wayanad

Wayanad is regarded as the most refreshing mountain destination in Kerala. An extension of the Mysore Plateau, Wayanad is the sole plateau region of Kerala. Nestled on the steep slopes of the Western Ghats, the altitude of Wayanad ranges from 700 to 1200 meters , with the highest point at Chembra Peak (2100 meters). 6 best places to visit in Wayanad in two days

I had never heard of Wayanad before I arrived in India! So, I was excited to explore this untouched beauty in the north of Kerala. Although it was a short time, we discovered 6 best places to visit in wayanad in two days!

If you are new here, I was one of the winners for Kerala Blog Express Season 5 and was exploring Kerala with Kerala Tourism and 28 other bloggers.

Wayanad does not only have the relaxing calmness of green beauty; but also amazing treks in the mountains to safaris in Wildlife Parks, there’s some adventure in every activity Wayanad offers. This the green paradise is nestled among the mountains and is home to some of the friendliest people I met during my India trip. Though there are many adventure activities that one must try while in Wayanad, here are a few that I would personally recommend.

For someone with the fear of deep water, I was not feeling safe going on a bamboo raft tied with ropes! I was terrified but the adventurer in me was like go-go-go. In the end, it was all, okay. It was my first-time bamboo rafting and amazed to see that long stick was all the guidance needed to maneuver bamboo raft. We also took turns to give it a go, was fun, glad I participated. You can do it in Kuruva Island or Pozhuthana River in Kerala. During the rafting experience, you can even try your hands in steering the bamboo raft with the help of the rafting guide.

If you know me, I am a hiker in the heart. Whether I am traveling or at home, I go hiking at least once a month. I love the fitness aspect of it and also the view from the top. So, when the opportunity came around to go hiking with Kerala tourism I was thrilled. Although it was a short hike, the view didn’t disappoint.

However, if you are big into the trekking, you can do Chembra Peak Trek. 2100 meters above sea level, Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad. It is a challenging mountaineering endeavor and would take a full day. The scenic beauty of Wayanad, which is visible from the top of Chembra, is very exhilarating. The surrounding areas offer exceptional photo opportunities and camping at the peak is an unforgettable experience. You can also hire guides, sleeping bags, canvases, huts, and trekking things.

3.  Rappelling

This is another adventure activity I recommend in Wayanad. My first abseiling and rock climbing experience was in the Blue Mountains in Sydney back in 2012, followed by one Saree Beach in Thailand back in 2014.

Besides that, I used to love going to an indoor climbing scene in Sydney. So, yes I love this sport and totally enjoy it even though it does scare me a little bit. Basically, I climbed down a vertical rock face while being securely tied to a rope and passing over a big rock. If taken adequate precautions, rock (or waterfall) rappelling is a safe and extremely thrilling adventure.

Although I had seen it online before, this was my first tea plantation experience in Munnar. The name Munnar is pronounced “Moon-aar” meaning “Three rivers” which is derived so, as it lies in the confluence of three mountain rivers Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala. There are waterfalls en-route along with beautiful greenery all along the way. I was also pleased to be there because I love tea and what great place to learn more about tea than tea estate in India!

There are 15 factories and tea leaves are usually handpicked by women. They pick approximately 100-120 kg a day. 100 kg picked tea leaves to yield down to 25 kg of finished tea. Then after leaves are picked, they are taken to the factory for withering, rolling. fermentation, drying, sorting and packing. The high-quality tea is always hand-picked, and the medium quality tea is picked with a tool. While there I also discovered a premium tea called “white -tea” and from the first sip I was a fan. So, I bought two big packets which I am drinking as I’m writing this blog. Good memories! PS: Munnar in Kerala is preparing to welcome the ‘Neelakurinji blooming season’ in 2018 after waiting for 12 long years.

5.  Ezhuthapara Caves

Although I was expecting a tiring hike, it was 10 minutes steep downhill hike to get to Ezhuthapara Caves. Despite the name, the Edakkal Caves are not actually caves. They are part of a prehistoric rock shelter, formed naturally.  It is among the oldest human settlements ever discovered. 

Inside the caves are pictorial drawings and engravings that indicate the presence of ancient human settlements in the region. Such as Stone Age rock engravings of human figures, animals, tools, vehicles, day-to-day occurrences and more. You can make it a day of exploring Ezhuthapara Caves, short hike and surrounding areas in a day. Above is our guide showing us some unusual engravings.

6. Waterfalls, Zip-lining & Kayaking

Lastly, one of the places to visit in wayanad in two days is visiting Meenmutty waterfalls. It is the second largest in the State and nestled in the greenery of the Mepadi forest range, the waterfalls are breathtaking! Adventure-seekers and nature lovers are absolutely in love with the locale and the sight.

You can also contact MuddyBoots, one of the longest operators in the Kerala state, who can help you organize activities like Zip lining,  Kayaking, and Quad-biking or I assume your hotel manager would be able to sort it out for you as well. One of the other travelers I met, also mentioned you can do the cliff jump around the area but please do your research first.

If you are not into hardcore adventure, I suggest exploring the Wayanad Heritage Museum and the beautiful nature of Wayanad.

Something worth mentioning is, you can take a bus or a car from Wayanad and you can get to the Taj Mahal in a day! Now, that would be a great side trip to add if you have time in your Wayanad trip.

Wow! These are really great adventure activities to do in Wayanad. I’m yet to explore the southern parts of India and Kerala is indeed on my bucket list. I’m glad I came across this post before my visit. Bamboo rafting sounds great, although I would also not feel safe on that bamboo raft. I would love to visit the rock shelter of Ezhuthapara Caves – sounds interesting.

Bamboo rafting and rappelling seems like hell of an adventure! I would be a little scared of balancing on a “boat” like this, but it definitely sounds cool and I guess I just have to overcome my fears like you did. 🙂 Rappelling on the other hand is something I would enjoy a lot, as I am interested in Via Ferrata as well. I have never done Bamboo rafting and this must be amazing as it is a nature adventure. You have lots of adventure in Wayanad with kayaking, zipline and many more. Thanks for recommendations for camera equipment which you have used during this trip.

Rafting is definitely not easy. The upper body strength required, man! Or maybe I just tend to move the pole from one side to the other more than required, due to a lack of skill!

At a distance of 3 km from Vythiri, and 13 km from Kalpetta, Pookote Lake, also known as Pookode Lake is a natural freshwater lake situated close to the Kalpetta - Kozhikode main road in the Wayanad district of Kerala. It is one of the must-visit Wayanad sightseeing places . At an altitude of about 2500 feet, this fascinating natural freshwater lake is surrounded by evergreen forests and rolling hills. The lake has the shape of India's map. The lake is spread across an area of 13 acres with a maximum depth of 6.5 m. The Panamaram stream, one of the main tributaries of the Kabani River, originates from Pookote Lake. The lake has an abundance of blue lotus and freshwater fishes. Pethia pookodensis is a species of cyprinid fish known to occur only in Pookode Lake. The forests surrounding the lake hold many wild animals, birds, and flies. The view of this vast expanse of water in the picturesque backdrop .....

At a distance of 16 km from Kalpetta & 4 km from Pookote Lake, Lakkidi is small hill station situated at the highest point in the Wayanad district. Located at an altitude of about 700 m, Lakkidi gets about 600 cm rainfall annually, making it one of the highest rainfall regions in Kerala and also one of the prime Wayanad tourist places to visit. Often referred as 'the gateway of Wayanad', Lakkidi is located at the crest of the serpentine Thamarassery ghat pass, which features over 9 hairpin curves that start at Adivaram (downhill). The 12 km long ghat road from Adivaram to Lakkidi passing through thick forest leaves a wonderful experience. At a distance of 11 km from Sulthan Bathery & 5 km from Edakkal Caves, 22 km from Kalpetta, Wayanad Heritage Museum is located in Ambalavayal village. This is one of the best heritage museums in Kerala. The museum houses fascinating items from tribal communities dating back to the second century AD. It has a rare collection of several ancient instruments & tribal artifacts like jewellery, hunting and fishing weapons, farming instruments, a fine collection of 14th - 16th century sculptures, etc. Ancient terra cottas, stone weapons and local art are also on display at the museum. A series of pictorial rock edicts referred to as Hero Stones, memorialize a bygone age of warriors. There is a fine figure of the Goddess of fertility, Urvara, also displayed here. Most of the artifacts are collected from the Wayanad and surrounding regions. 3 Jain Temple - Sulthan Bathery

At a distance of 24 km from Kalpetta & 1 km from Sulthan Bathery Bus Station, Jain Temple is an ancient temple located in the heart of Sulthan Bathery town in Wayanad district. This is one of the most important amongst a series of ruins spread across Kerala that testify to a period of a strong Jain presence in this region and also one of the best heritage places to visit in Wayanad . The Jain Temple at Sultan Bathery is believed to have been built in 13th century AD. The temple has an interesting history. It first served as a shrine, and then became an important center of commercial activity. Later in 18th century, it became a dumping ground of ammunitions by Tipu Sultan. The town of Sulthan Bathery was earlier known as Ganapathi Vattam and had 12 traditional Jain streets in and around the town. After Tipu's vandalism, the temple was deserted for about 150 years. Jain temple.

Although the Jain Temple is an important pilgrimage center for Jains, it is visited by people of all faiths. The temple is a fine exposition of Jain architecture. Located near to Sulthan Bathery, the place of worship is alternatively called as the Ananthanatha Swami Shrine. Thirunelli Temple
