TOP-RATED YELLOWSTONE TOURS FROM CODY, WY ★★★★★

We needed a couple of BAT snowmobiles for a three day unguided tour of Yellowstone park. Gary Fales Outfitting provided the equipment and clothing required for the trip. The staff was excellent to work with, very accommodating, and the equipment was top notch. The trip was awesome, would recommend Gary Fales Outfitting to anyone considering the same type of trip.

If you’re looking for a fun, safe, and exciting winter trip through Yellowstone, go with Gary Fales. Trips from Cody offer the most dramatic and stunning scenery and the most bang for your buck on day trips or custom shorter routes. Well worth it!

I’ve made a number of trips into Yellowstone with Gary Fales Outfitting, and each time was a special event that I feel lucky to have experienced. The guides are knowledgeable and friendly, and the trip through the East Gate is the best way to experience the wildest way into Yellowstone.

I live in Bozeman, Mont., and spend a lot of time around Yellowstone Park enjoying the great outdoors. There are lots of amazing experiences to be had around here, but not much can compare to a snowmobile trip through the park with Gary Fales Outfitting.

Yellowstone Geysers Tour

Old faithful winter tour.

snowmobile tours of yellowstone national park

Destination

Enjoy a catered experience of Yellowstone National Park’s interior, where incredible volcanic features such as geysers and hot springs create a mystical world amidst the backdrop of winter’s beauty.

  • Old Faithful
  • Snowcoach Excursion to Yellowstone’s Interior
  • Winter Landscapes & Geothermal Wonders

Yellowstone is unique year-round, but perhaps most notably in the wintertime. This high-elevation volcanic plateau experiences deep cold and heavy snowfall, but simultaneously exhibits some of the most visible volcanic features on the planet. Hot water rises from geysers, springs, vents and gurgling pots creating tornadoes of steam and a sense of surrealism. Eighty percent of Yellowstone is closed to the public in winter, and this tour allows us to visit these remote regions on specialized vehicles that roll over the snow.

*Tour availability is based on snowcoach availability with our partner. We will verify availability before confirming the tour.

Our full-day tour (accessing the interior of Yellowstone National Park from the north entrance or the west entrance) is led by our naturalist guides according to guest abilities and interests. Our guide will escort you in a Yellowstone Safari Co vehicle from your lodging to either Gardiner or West Yellowstone where we will join our group headed towards Old Faithful, by snowcoach. Our guide will provide educated and passionate interpretation of everything you encounter throughout the day including walks around several geyser basins, wildlife sightings, historic buildings and geologic features.  As our guest, you will be provided healthy and hearty snacks, a full picnic lunch, as well as the ultimate decadence of a steaming hot cocoa or coffee when you need it the most. Whether this is your first or tenth time to Yellowstone National Park, visiting in the winter will undoubtedly be an enjoyable and memorable experience.

On your journey to the park entrance and throughout the day, you may see some of North America’s largest mammals exhibiting some fascinating behaviors as they attempt to survive the harsh winter. Herbivores such as bison, elk, deer, moose and sheep, range openly throughout valleys, gorges and cliff-sides. Many raptors such as bald and golden eagles, falcons and hawks perch on trees or circle the skies searching for their next meal. Predators like wolves, coyotes and foxes are especially active in winter when their prey are at their weakest. Our guides will provide binoculars for you to use throughout your day in order to appreciate the beauty of these wild creatures safely from a distance.

Yellowstone Safari Company is incredible. They are extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife, the ecosystem and everything in-between. I had been to Yellowstone a dozen times with friends and family before going on a safari with them, and their trips are next level. You see things that you've never noticed before and are way more likely to see wildlife since they are in the park everyday and know the animals patterns. I can't recommend them enough!

All photography has been shot by our talented tour guides .

Will we be in a group with other people?

You’ll have a private tour from your pickup location to the snowcoach departure site at either the north or west entrance.  Then, your group and your Yellowstone Safari Company guide will join others on the snowcoach, which seat groups of up to 20 people. Your guide will offer you a personalized experience with information throughout the day, as well as transport to and from the snowcoach departure site.

How cold will it be in Yellowstone National Park in winter?

Yellowstone in winter can be very cold. We recommend wearing synthetic layers, including a very warm insulating layer and a waterproof/repellent wind layer, as well as warm wool hats and gloves. We will provide hand and foot warmers for you as well as hot drinks and food to keep you warm throughout the day.

Will we see Old Faithful erupt on this tour?

Yes, every trip includes an eruption of Old Faithful, which happens every 90 minutes or so. We will plan lunch around watching it erupt!

Will we see other geysers and hot springs on this tour?

Yes, you will have the opportunity to walk around several geyser basins to see these features up close.  We are able to observe many of these geothermal features in one area, and we will take time to explore and educate as we walk around, but we will not touch or enter any springs – it’s illegal to do so in the park!

One of the most common responses that I hear when I tell my summer-time clients about our winter wildlife safaris is: I didn’t even know that Yellowstone was open in the winter!  Not only is Yellowstone open, but winter is arguably one of the most spectacular times to visit!

Yellowstone in Winter

Feb 27, 2023.

As November approaches, a dramatic transformation occurs- the days shorten, the temperatures drop, the chance of snow escalates, and eventually, over 200 miles of roadway in the park will close to regular vehicle traffic.  Fortunately, this does not mean the entire park is inaccessible.

Old faithful via snowmobile.

Prepare to get up close and personal with Yellowstone National Park from the seat of a snowmobile. Even if you’re new to snow machines, our experienced guides will have you feeling like a seasoned pro from the moment you depart West Yellowstone on your all-day adventure. You’ll see:

  • Old Faithful , the star of Yellowstone and the best-known geyser in the world. You can almost set your watch by the eruptions that occur about every 90 minutes—you won’t want to miss it.
  • Lower Geyser Basin , home to geysers, hot springs and mud pools—including the often-photographed Fountain Paint Pots.
  • Firehole Canyon, cut through 800-foot lava flows. In the summer, park visitors are drawn to the waterfall and swimming hole, but in winter it’s a quiet, beautiful place to explore.

On your journey, you’ll stop at Madison Junction . It’s an ideal spot to get off your snowmobile, hang out in a warming hut, and enjoy a break along your journey.

“Grand Canyon” of Yellowstone by Snowmobile

Although Yellowstone National Park is known for Old Faithful, there are many beautiful natural sights to see year-round, including “the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.” They become even more memorable when you view them via snowmobile. Never driven a snowmobile?  No problem. We will teach you everything you need to know. During your full-day tour, you’ll see:

  • Norris Geyser Basin , which features Steamboat Geyser. While it doesn’t run “on time” as much as Old Faithful, Steamboat is the tallest geyser anywhere on the globe. It’s spectacular any time of year.
  • The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a must-see phenomenon in winter. You’ll be captivated by the snow clinging to the canyon walls and the ice bridge that forms at the bottom. It’s definitely a “bucket list” location.
  • If time allows, Hayden Valley will also be a stop on your route. It is here that you will often find photo-worthy bison herds, elk and other animals.

All of our winter tours include a stop at Madison Junction . You can stretch your legs, take a bathroom break and talk with other Park visitors in a warming hut.

Take a Snowcoach Through Yellowstone in the Winter

One of the two ways to explore yellowstone in the winter is by snowcoach. this is everything you need to know..

When snow blankets Yellowstone National Park, there’s only two ways to get into the heart of the park: by snowmobile or snowcoach.

In early November each year Yellowstone closes all but one road to normal vehicle traffic. As the snow begins to fly and cover our first national park, a different sort of vehicle gets ready to transport visitors through a winter wonderland. A snowcoach is a shuttle van either on extra large (picture a monster truck) tires or tracks like a snowmobile. These specially designed vehicles are perfect for navigating the park’s unplowed roads and, other than snowmobiles, are the only way to access the interior of the park in the winter. With big picture windows, you’ll be able to see all the sights from the park’s abundant winter wildlife to steaming geysers.

Snowcoaches are a great way to see the park since you’ll stay warm and cozy inside the vehicle, unlike a snowmobile tour where you’ll have to bundle up. Your driver will also be able to share fun facts about the park and easily point out wildlife as you drive. Tours range from half-day scenic drives to full-day excursions to packages where you’ll do both a scenic drive and ski or snowshoe in the park.

A snowcoach is also the only transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge , the park’s only hotel other than Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel , open in the winter (note: Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel will be closed winter 2022/23). A stay in the heart of the park in winter is magical. From spending the day skiing or snowshoeing past geysers to curling up next to the fire with a book to ice skating under the stars, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Yellowstone Snowcoach Options

West entrance tours.

Located in West Yellowstone, Mont. , the park’s West Entrance is closed to normal vehicles in the winter months, but is known as the “Snowmobiling Capital of the World.” You can take a guided snowmobile tour in the park from West Yellowstone, but you can also depart on a day tour from this town to see the park from the comfort of a snowcoach. These tour operators offer day trips into the park, usually to either Old Faithful or Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone :

Backcountry Adventures – backcountry-adventures.com

Yellowstone Vacations – www.yellowstonevacations.com

Yellowstone Expeditions (Ski camping tours) – yellowstoneexpeditions.com

South Entrance Tours

Yellowstone’s South Entrance is located closest to Jackson, Wyo. , a famous winter ski destination thanks to Jackson Hole Resort. Nearby Grand Teton National Park is also home to lots of winter fun including snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. From Jackson, you can head north with one of these tour operators to spend the day seeing Yellowstone by snowcoach, or be dropped off at Old Faithful Snow Lodge for a stay:

Scenic Safaris – www.scenic-safaris.com

North Entrance Tours and Transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge

The North Entrance, just outside of Gardiner, Mont. , is where you’ll find the only year-round road open to normal vehicles through the park. In winter, you can drive plowed roads to the Mammoth Hot Springs area and through Lamar Valley to the Northeast Entrance where the tiny Montana towns of Silver Gate and Cooke City await. You can also book a snowcoach day tour into the park, or transportation to the only hotel inside the park besides Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel that offers winter lodging: Old Faithful Snow Lodge.

Yellowstone National Park Lodges (day tours from Mammoth and Old Faithful, transportation to Old Faithful Snow Lodge) – www.yellowstonenationalparklodges.com/adventures/winter-adventures/

How Far in Advance Do I Need to Book a Snowcoach Tour?

If you’re using a snowcoach as transportation to the Snow Lodge, it’s best to book your ride as soon as you book your stay since there is only one company at the North Entrance and one company at the South Entrance that offers transportation.

Day tours are more flexible since there are more operators, but it’s best to book as far in advance as possible in order to ensure you get a seat. Last minute reservations may be available, but don’t count on them.

How Much Are Yellowstone Snowcoach Tours?

Yellowstone snowcoach tours range in price depending on which company and tour you choose. In Winter 2022/23 half-day scenic snowcoach tours could be found for less than $100 for adults and less than $50 for children. Transportation, including two pieces of luggage, between Mammoth and Old Faithful Snow Lodge cost $144 for adults and $72 for children each way for the 2022/23 season. While tipping is not required, it’s expected. Be prepared to tip your driver 15-20% in cash.

Be sure to note whether or not your snowcoach operator includes your park pass in your tour price. If they do not, you’ll need to purchase a pass in advance. On guided tours, a 7-day, annual or lifetime pass is only good for one person, so be sure to have a pass for each individual in your group. These passes cost $20 in 2022/23 for adults 16 and over. Children 15 and under are free.

What Do You Wear on a Snowcoach Tour?

While snowcoaches are heated, it’s important to be properly dressed for winter conditions as you’ll be entering and exiting the snowcoach in snowy and cold weather and will likely get out and explore at certain stops along the way.

Dress in layers so that you can be comfortable on the drive but quickly gear up to get out in the cold. A waterproof and insulated jacket, a warm hat, warm gloves and snow boots or other waterproof boots with good tread are recommended. Wool or synthetic fabrics are better than cotton for winter trips as they wick away moisture more quickly.

★★★★★ REVIEWS FOR OUR GUIDES, TOURS & RENTAL!

"First, our guides did an awesome job!! Second, it was a blast - perfect day, perfect weather, perfect snow even with mild temp, and gorgeous scenery!! Third, the snowmobiles were great machines: in great shape and performed flawlessly!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Teton Valley Adventures! Scratched it off my bucket list!"

"A group of us rented snowmobiles and we were given great advice on where to ride, what to look out for, and how to get unstuck (which we needed to do several times because it was DUMPING!!). Victor was a great liaison, was accommodating to some challenges we had driving to the drop-off location, and arrived on time to pick us up. If I get the opportunity to return to Driggs and want to snowmobile, I will go back to Teton Valley Adventures."

"Our guide, Matt, drove us safely up the West entrance, unloaded everything, and took us into the park for an amazing 6-hour ride. We saw an Elk up close, Bison, Eagles, Swans, Trout, and Old Faithful, and simply had one of the best adventures ever!! They provided us with a nice warm suit, a helmet, and a fast and scrappy snow machine!! Worth EVERY penny we paid!!"

"Went Snowmobiling in Yellowstone with my family and it was one of the BEST experience we had. Matt was our tour guide and was amazing. He was helpful and knowledgeable which made our trip even more memorable. Melissa handled the booking and helped us when we arrived. She made booking our trip effortless. We want to come back next year and do the Mesa Falls. Truly one of better trips."

"Had a blast on a full day tour of Mesa Falls! The Falls was stunning and the full day of views were jaw dropping! Walker was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and very patient with this first-timer from Florida! Travis too was extremely helpful and friendly. Would highly recommend!"

"We spent 3-3.5 hours on the side of the mountain snowmobiling and I never felt like the guide rushed us to be done. He stopped and allowed us to just free drive in a couple of open fields, took us to the top (as far as we could get), scenery was amazing. I cannot post enough positive about this trip. Our guide was Hope and if I ever go back I will specifically ask for him!!"

"It was an awesome trip through the park and Old Faithful was spectacular. Our guide, Shawn, was perfect!! He stopped often to show us wildlife, take pictures, and explain all of the geysers. It was our first time ever to see Yellowstone; Shawn told us we picked the coldest day of the year thus far to take the tour... memorable!! Thank you, Shawn, for an awesome experience and for your friendship!"

"Sam, our guide, was so informative and knew the park so well!! We saw Bisons, Coyotes, and Old Faithful erupt. What a great experience for old and young. I went with my 4 friends. We got amazing gopro footage and saw a part of the US in the winter we would not normally. We would highly recommend to anyone that has an opportunity to snowmobile Yellowstone, this is the group to go with!"

"I had a group with 9 machines, 11 people, and we did the Mesa Falls. They managed the diversity of the group by allowing those that wanted to be more aggressive to do that and those that wanted to be slower to do that. Our guides were Hope and Jeremy and they were great."

"Just got back from the most incredible snowmobile experience with Matt. Our family tried to get a reservation in Jackson Hole, but luckily they were already all booked up!! We would have not found this great place in Driggs, ID!! We are so glad we decided to stay in Driggs and Teton Valley was exceptionally accommodating even with our two young boys."

"Our guide, Hope was attentive and shared lots of interesting info. He was also an amazing van driver and got us back to Driggs through a big snow storm. The suits and helmets were great and were were all warm and comfy all day. The snow machines worked well and we had no break downs or issues. I have gone on 2 prior Yellowstone snowmobile trips and this was by far the best!!"

"From booking with Melissa to the actual snowmobiling, this was the experience of a lifetime. 3 in our group had never been snowmobiling before. Kerry was very thorough with safety instructions and checked in with us frequently to make sure we were doing well. My favorite thing was that on the drive to the mountain, Kerry asked us what we were hoping to get out of our trip and then tailored it specifically to us."

"My husband, son, and I did the full day tour to Mesa Falls. Sam was our guide and he was amazing. He was patient with us as first time snowmobilers, and very encouraging to me when I expressed my nervousness. His safety lesson was thorough, his directions clear, and we never felt unsafe. He was also very knowledgeable about the area and answered all of our questions during the drive to the site."

"We had an amazing time on our snowmobile trip to Old Faithful! There were 7 of us and our son is a quadriplegic but they were so willing to accommodate all of us. Our guide was wonderful too! He took us on some back roads and made lots of stops (per our request) to warm up and explore and he carried our son’s wheelchair on his sled so he’d have it for lunch and exploring ventures."

"During a trip to Idaho/Wyoming to ski, we took a snowmobile tour with Teton Valley Adventures. There were several snowmobile tour operators in the area, but from the initial review of their Web site then a call to their office speaking with Melissa & the Cave Falls destination just inside Yellowstone National Park, we felt great about booking with TVA."

"We cannot say enough great things about our guide or our trip. This past weekend we had booked a trip through Teton Valley Adventures to snowmobile. We were greeted by the friendliest, laid back staff when we arrived. They got straight to getting us suited up in the included warm attire and got us on our way for our scheduled adventure."

Can anyone recommend a tour company for Snow Coach or Snowmobile tours in Yellowstone? I am told you must go through private tour companies due to COVID-19. It is just 3 of us and the prices I am seeing are pretty steep. We are basing our stay out of Jackson Hole 12/20-12/25. Any suggestions are appreciated.

"Can anyone recommend a tour company for Snow Coach or Snowmobile tours in Yellowstone? "

See the list from the YNP website. I will link it below.

"I am told you must go through private tour companies due to COVID-19."

No, you have to use the approved vendors (approved by YNP) every year.

Are all of those companies requiring trips due to Covid 19 this year? Maybe so. I checked Scenic Safari and they are. You are right! Very pricey!

https://www.scenic-safaris.com/index.php/winter-jackson-wy/winter-tours/old-faithful-snow-coach-tour

You can check the others on the YNP approved list, but that may be the case.

List of approved vendors -

Xanterra used to run both snowcoach for just transportation and snowcoach and snowmobile tours from other gates. In the past, snowmobile rentals were available in-park for self-touring as well. Both of those ended years ago. Now the only Xanterra option is snowcoach from Mammoth.

If your goal is to go snowmobiling, I recommend you cancel your Jackson lodging and look into staying at West Yellowstone. I can tell you, there are really no budget options when you travel to that area. It is an expensive trip. I’m not sure what the prices you’ve seen from Jackson into the park are, but here is what we paid for our snowmobile and snowcoach tours in February. Snowcoach Tour to Canyon was approximately $129 per person. Snowmobile Tour was approximately $200 per snowmobile (it didn’t matter if it was a single or double rider). Prices may have gone up this year but I wouldn’t expect they would rise more than 10 to 15 percent each year. Also, think about the tip, that is not included in the price and neither is lunch. We stayed in a house/condo and saved money by making our own lunches for the tours. The other option was to purchase boxed lunches through the tour operator. There is also an additional charge for the park fee, unless you already have your National Parks Pass. We also rented snowmobiles to ride the trails on our own for three days and the price for that was $149 per snowmobile per day. We didn’t rent clothing, but if you had to, that would be another (at least) $15 per person per day for a snowmobile suit, helmet, boots, and gloves. You only need to rent the clothes for the day you are riding snowmobiles.

If your primary reason for this trip is snowmobiling into the park, please rethink your lodging. It will be a much longer day snowmobiling from the South entrance to Old Faithful than from the West entrance. The max speed limit in the park on a snowmobile is 35 MPH. I can only speak to the West entrance, but there are lots of stops, Madison Junction warming hut (for hot chocolate), Riverside Drive, Grand Prismatic, the Fountain Paint Pots, and Firehole Falls are always stops we take. I’m not sure a snowmobile trip from the South entrance would include those stops. I also don’t know if you would have another option in the park, like the Canyon tour. I’ve done both snowcoach and snowmobile tours to the Canyon area and it is not to be missed!

I’d be happy to answer any questions you have about snowmobile/snowcoach tours into the park from the West entrance.

I think they are still sorting out what they will be doing for the upcoming season, "they" being the different approved vendors.

If a vendor is requiring a private booking, that will be much more expensive. The only way I know to verify is to check each approved vendor to see how they are handling winter trips during Covid 19 times.

Trying to help out the OP since she won't see "Xanterra" on the YNP list of approved vendors.

Personal/non-vendor guided snowmobiles are only allowed with a permit through the lottery system.

Yellowstone in winter is wonderful, but not inexpensive.

That reminds me of stopping to ask for directions in very rural areas. = "Turn where the oak tree USED to be".

True story.

Not kidding.

Things are so confusing as the current approved vendors are just now deciding what they will be doing in the upcoming 20/21 winter season. I've been checking over the last week and some are just now posting information. And the answer is....it varies.

So very different from just a few months ago. What the snow coach / snow mobile tour companies will be doing in January 2021 may be very different from when I was in the park in January 2020.

I think the best advice we can give is....check to see what the vendors* are in the process of posting on their websites. This year we can't base it on what they did even in winter 2019/2020 season.

*the approved vendors on the YNP website.

Here's the link again -

Edited to add - A first time visitor isn't concerned about what used to happen in the past. Trying to sort out what's happening in a few months is already confusing enough.

The current answer = TBD
