Breathtaking…

There are only a handful of experiences in life that can be described as such – a moment so awe-inspiring that you take pause.

In 1992, we were captivated by just such a moment, as we stood atop a ridge overlooking 710 acres of breathtaking, rolling hills of Sonoma County countryside. This incredible landscape forged over eons would one day fulfill our vision as the Notre Vue Estate. We have established an agrarian heritage through thoughtful determination. The estate vineyards are tenderly cared for and are the foundation for our wines.

Preserving the natural beauty of the land has always been at the heart of our vision. For this reason, the estate includes 350 acres of protected open space land, preserving the beauty of Notre Vue Estate for generations to come. This synergy creates a harmony that supports the abundant wildlife as well as the natural flora and fauna.

Inman Family Wines – Santa Rosa

3900 Piner Rd. Santa Rosa, CA 95401 – (707) 395-0689

Purchase Wines – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Blend-Sparkling, Proprietary Blend, Rose, Pinot Gris

Inman Family Wines is the go-to destination for Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs

Certified “Sonoma Sustainable” since 2016, Inman Family is passionate about growing grapes and making wines as naturally as possible, to ensure they embody not only the pure personality of the fruit, but also the singular character of the place where the grapes are grown.

Renowned for their OGV Estate Pinot Noir and an intentional direct-to-press Endless Crush® Rosé of Pinot Noir, guests are invited to taste wines among the vines, often with the winemaker Kathleen Inman.

In addition to single vineyard Pinot Noirs, Inman Family produces Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Extra Brut Luxe Cuvée, Brut Rosé, and a Blanc de Noir.

Croix Estate – Santa Rosa

5700 River Rd. Santa Rosa, CA 95401 – (707) 887-2703

Purchase Wines – Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Red Rhone Blend, Chardonnay

Croix Estate began with the founding vintage of 2012, followed by the opening of our winery in 2018, and the steadfast continuance to achieve perfection in the glass annually.

The initial concept of Croix was a quixotic collage of random ideas and wines: shock art labels, uncommon grape varieties, uncommon wine regions, no wine made more than one vintage, and on it went from idea to idea, most of which were done, being done, or being re-conceptualized by many others in search of repurposed uniqueness within the winemaking community. Rather than chase a creative, newly used concept, we determined to distill the purpose of Croix Estate into a fundamental pursuit of perfection.

Hook & Ladder Winery – Santa Rosa

2134 Olivet Road Santa Rosa, CA 95401 – (707) 526-2255

Purchase Wines – Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Red Blend, Zinfandel, Rose, Sangiovese

The Next Generation of Russian River Valley Wines

Hook & Ladder Winery continues the legacy of one of Russian River Valley’s most influential wine families. Founded in 2003 by pioneering growers and vintners Cecil and Christine De Loach, and helmed today by their grandson, winemaker Jason De Loach, Hook & Ladder showcases the diversity of the appellation the family helped to define, in a portfolio of limited-production bottling’s from their Russian River Valley estate vineyards. The name Hook & Ladder pays homage to Cecil De Loach’s 17- year career as a San Francisco firefighter.

Enriquez Estate Wines

5960 Eastside Rd, Forestville, CA 95436 – (707) 347-9719

Purchase Wines – Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Muscat, Rose, Blend-White, Cabernet Franc, Port, Tanna

Enriquez Estate Wines is a family-owned and operated micro-winery specializing in small-batch Pinot Noir, Tempranillo and unique white varietals. Their beautiful 8.5-acre vineyard estate is in the heart of the Russian River Valley. When visiting the winery, guests can expect a welcoming and intimate experience, designed to be both accessible and personal. Enriquez Estate Winery prides itself on ensuring that visitors leave with newfound knowledge and a sense of joy, without feeling overwhelmed. The facilities strike a perfect balance between rustic charm and natural beauty, mirroring the hands-on and down-to-earth nature of winemaking itself. Each tasting is thoughtfully conducted one at a time, providing a personalized and intimate interaction. At Enriquez Estate Winery, wine is celebrated in an inclusive and engaging manner, making it approachable, unpretentious, and, above all, fun.

Enriquez Estate Wines is currently producing fewer than 1,000 cases annually. Having a smaller production allows them the opportunity to truly craft the wines. Respecting the challenge that comes with the property’s delicate vines and complex micro-climate, a hands-on approach is taken.

Top 7 Russian River Valley Wineries to Visit

Russian River Valley

The Russian River Valley has a viticulture history unlike any other in California. Grapevines were first planted by immigrants from the Mediterranean region in the 19th century. Most were “gardens” that families used for personal consumption, using cuttings brought from their European homesteads. This is how Zinfandel, now a flagship US grape, first appeared in the country.  By the early 20th century over 200 wineries were in operation. However, Prohibition devastated the nascent winemaking industry. Nearly all wineries closed. Those few that remained officially open were allowed by the government to produce “sacrificial” wine for religious purposes. And even after prohibition, most growers sold off their grapes to bulk jug wine producers. It would take until the 1970s for the Russian River Valley to return to the preeminence of former times.

Now, the wines of the Russian River Valley are continually among the favorites of California wine aficionados and novices alike. If you’re looking to taste great cool-climate California red wines, check out our Red Wine Lover’s Guide to Russian River Valley Pinot Noir for more detail about this particular varietal. But if you’re looking for the best Russian River Valley wineries to visit, read on.

Established as an AVA in 1983, the region now hosts over 70 wineries producing over 30 different varieties. The region’s close proximity to the Pacific Ocean allows for the cooling influence of morning fog. This contributes to the very important diurnal temperature variations that facilitates a long, slow ripening period for the grapes. When combined with the sandy loam “Goldridge Soil” and clay-based “Sebastopol soil” one can see how this region was able to blossom out of obscurity into excellence.  All this contributes to the perfection of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. While Russian River Chardonnay and Zinfandel are equally fantastic here, it’s Pinot Noir that is king. Arguably, this is where California’s New World style earned its accolades and set the standard. Here are 7 top Russian River Wineries every vino lover should have on their wine tasting rooms to visit list.

Just minutes from downtown Healdsburg, enjoy a memorable wine tasting on the patio at the Merriam Estate House, in the heart of their 11 acre vineyard. It’s designed with the comfort and warmth of a cozy New England farmhouse. The patio has surrounding views of Merriam’s vineyards, and plenty of outdoor seating, with large umbrellas for shade. Choose between the Russian River Tasting or the Single Vineyard Tasting.  The Single Vineyard Tasting highlights the very best blocks of vines the estate has to offer. Each tasting includes five estate-grown, award-winning wines. For the enthusiast looking to go behind the scenes, take the guided estate vineyard and winery tour. It will give greater insight into the history of Merriam Vineyards, as well as the Eastern Hills of the Russian River Valley.  Stroll around the organic estate and investigate the winery and cellar operations. This is followed by a seated tasting of some of their Single Vineyard wines and includes a charcuterie and cheese board with delightful vegetable snacks. All items are hand selected and sourced from local purveyors or made in house.

$15-20 per person tasting (707) 568-2455 5700 Occidental Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95401 Seated Tastings Daily from 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm, by reservation only

Balletto Vineyards is one of a handful of Russian River Valley wineries that have 100% control from vineyard to bottle. After the founder John Balletto transformed the land from a vegetable farm to a fully functioning vineyard, their reputation for producing exceptional fruit has soared. They sell most of their grapes to other winemakers, however, they keep the best vineyards and blocks for themselves.  Try a four or five wine flight on their patio garden outside. Don’t pass up the snappy dry Gewürztraminer, or bright and fresh Zinfandel. There’s no “wine babble” here, just interesting and amusing tales of the winery itself told by friendly and welcoming staff.  A large, calming water fountain in the center of the patio and the breeze flowing through the surrounding vineyards is pretty much the definition of relaxation. Tasting fee waived with the purchase of two or more bottles.

Enjoy the cool breezes and sweeping views of the rolling hills of Sonoma countryside.  For the wine tasting, sit on the terrace perched high above their prized vineyard, and savor a flight of 5 gourmet estate wines, including Zinfandel and sparkling Rosé. Their wines are made in the European style, which focuses more on finesse and purity, rather than over-extracted, over-ripe grapes, and heavy-handed oak.  The terrace is decorated with chandeliers, plush sofas, wine fridges, coolers and is fully covered. There’s an optional Charcuterie Board for $15 per plate (serves 1-2 people) which includes local cheeses from Point Reyes and cured meats.  They also offer a wine tasting at the lakeside pavilion. It’s a secluded spot with comfy couches, and a great view where it’s common to see herons, otters, ducks, deer, and other wildlife.

With oversized leather chairs, great artwork on the walls, and a wide selection of tasting options, Siduri lives up to their motto, “serious wine and serious fun.” Although they offer wines by the glass, full bottles, and beer on tap, pick out one of their guided tasting to get the full experience.  There’s the “Sonoma County Exploration” which focuses on specific, notable vineyard sites throughout the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. The “North-to-South” tasting is an educational experience showcasing six of Siduri’s single-vineyard Pinot Noirs that span 1,000 miles from Oregon to Santa Barbara.  Finally, there’s the “Reserve” experience which combines the best Siduri has to offer from Oregon down to Santa Barbara. For something a little different, stop by Jeff Cohn Cellars along the Healdsburg plaza square. Trellised root vines hang on the walls, along with engaging modern artwork. Taste some highly-acclaimed, small-production Rhône varietals and single-vineyard Zinfandel wines. The Iris Reserve flight offers a unique GSM blend (Grenache-Syrah-Mouvedre) and the hard-to-find Petite Sirah. The Great Rhône Whites tasting is a fabulous introduction to the wines of that region, including Viognier and Marsanne. And the best of the bunch is the Private Vault Tasting.  Try eight coveted, limited production wines and dig deeper into Jeff’s process, learning more about where he sources his grapes. This wine tasting includes an opportunity to purchase highly allocated wines. Or savor five of highly-acclaimed, small-production Rhône and single-vineyard Zinfandel wines.  The tasting room features small and large wooden tables around a cozy fireplace. Voted the best winery in Sonoma by the San Francisco Magazine in 2017. MacRostie Winery is a place to slow down and soak in the beauty of the Russian River Valley. It’s set against the stunning backdrop of the valley, and designed by the internationally acclaimed architecture firm of Gould Evans.  Light, airy, and built with natural materials, the winery features multiple indoor venues for seated wine tastings, and three expansive patio terraces. MacRostie’s Wine Ambassadors are knowledgeable and enthusiastic, without being overly pedantic. They’ll craft an engaging and memorable experience — sharing fascinating details about their winemaking and vineyards. Very much recommended if interested in the local viticulture.  Each tasting highlights five wines, with a focus on single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. Explore the sustainable building design, admire the nearby sycamores, and gaze at the large floor plan elegantly framed on the wall. Don’t forget to reserve the best seat on the property: The Corner Table on the North Terrace. This panoramic view overlooks the Westside Road that runs through some of the most picturesque vineyards in Sonoma.

Top Russian River Wineries Wrap-Up

Russian River Valley wineries typically don’t have expansive crowds or the level of snobbery you may find in Napa Valley. And the wines don’t disappoint. In fact, some of the top Napa wineries source their cool-climate grapes from Russian River Valley vineyards.  Russian River wineries are not as isolated as the more northern parts of Sonoma County. There’s an untroubled attitude to this lush and bountiful land that is steeped in tradition, yet open to new trends.  Old farm sheds, modern urban warehouses, sprawling ranch homes, redwood groves, apple orchards, and a majestic flowing river through the heart of it all. It’s clear that the top Russian River wineries are among the best destinations for wine tasting in the state.

Russian River Valley Wineries: A Taste of World Class Excellence

Russian River Valley Wineries: A Taste of World Class Excellence

When you hear the words “wine country,” do you automatically think of California? It’s hard to imagine that once upon a time, The Golden State wasn’t the same wine destination it is today. Fifty years ago, the only “fine wines” were French, and everyone else was considered a distant second-place at best. Thankfully, a few of the extraordinary Russian River Valley wineries helped put California on the map and show the rest of the world what they were missing!

The 1976 Judgement of Paris is easily the most famous blind taste test to ever take place, and it’s an iconic, pivotal moment for the wine world. When a selection of California’s best Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons went up against French Chardonnays and Bordeauxs – considered to be the best wines in the world – no one expected any change from the status quo. Except, California’s Chardonnay from Chateau Montelena – made with grapes from Bacigalupi Vineyards in Russian River Valley – beat out every other wine in the tasting!

Best Russian River Valley Wineries

The Russian River Valley AVA lies at the heart of Sonoma Valley . It’s home to world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, along with Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. These grapes thrive in the Russian River Valley – where the mornings are warm and sunny, but the late afternoons are nice and cool, thanks to all the fog that rolls in from the Petaluma Gap .

If you’re looking for some of the best Russian River Valley wineries, keep reading! In this blog post, you’ll find all the best experiences and tastings in the heart of Sonoma Valley.

The Bacigalupi Family posing for a photo at their vineyard in Russian River Valley

Bacigalupi Vineyards

The Chardonnay made from Bacigalupi Vineyards put California on the map as a premiere wine travel destination for wine enthusiasts and aficionados alike! It’s historic, pivotal, iconic, and not to be missed when you visit Russian River Valley! It’s hard to believe, but when Charles and Helen Bacigalupi moved to Westside Road in 1956, they’d never even heard about Chardonnay. Eventually, thanks in large part to his friend Paul Heck of Korbel Winery, the couple planted six acres of Chardonnay and six acres of Pinot Noir in 1964.

The rest, as they say, is history.

The wine and cheese pairing flight is by appointment only, but I promise it’s worth planning ahead for. You’ll enjoy four, small production estate wines that have each been carefully curated and paired with delicious cheeses.

Bruliam Wines

The only thing better than the delicious small-lot, single vineyard Pinot Noir at Bruliam Wines is the fantastic story that comes with it! I have a lot of respect and admonition for Kerith Overstreet – a doctor and mother of three who decided she was ready for a new act in life. After years of higher education, multiple residencies, and fellowships, she went back to school to study enology at UC Davis. In the years since, she’s been able to source from top vineyards and growers to craft extraordinarily beautiful wines.

She’s incredibly passionate about what she does, and you’ll be able to taste that in every glass! Getting to know Kerith when I visited Bruliam was an absolute pleasure, and I’m sure you’ll agree that her wines are absolutely divine!

Gary Farrell Vineyards & Winery

Forty years ago, before the Russian River Valley AVA even existed, Gary Farrell crafted his first Pinot Noir from fruit grown in the now-legendary Rochioli Vineyard. Today, Gary Farrell Vineyards and Winery continues to carry that pioneer spirit with each wine they craft. And at the helm, Winemaker Theresa Heredia adds her own signature to small-lot single vineyard Pinot Noirs and while still embodying Gary Farrell’s hallmark style of balance and elegance.

I’m a big believer of everyday magic and not waiting for big occasions to enjoy a wonderful glass of wine. Rodney Strong

Before Sonoma Valley became synonymous with Wine Country, there was Rodney Strong. He was a true visionary and pioneer of the region, who began producing wines here more than 60 years ago. Although the winery has been run by the Klein Family for the past three decades, the wines grown here are still made with the same strong commitment to history, excellence, and sustainability.

Come learn about the character, weight and layer of each wine from owners James and Kerry MacPhail, and see how the flavors dance across your tongue.

Ernest Vineyards

You’ll never want to leave these chic, private, open-air salons. Come enjoy award-winning wines and delectable small bites from local purveyors.

The winery was lovingly named after Todd Gottula, Ernest, who’s remembered by his family as an entroper, risk-taker, and role model. Todd and his wife, Erin, are passionate about sourcing varietals from carefully selected vineyards around Sonoma County, and the proof is in the wine.

DaVero Farm & Vineyards

Before they made wines, DeVero Farm made olive oil! This charming, little estate is home to a handful of red and white varieties just waiting to be appreciated! The signature winery experience at DeVero Farm includes getting to explore the estate, vineyards, and garden, and learning a little bit about how the wines are grown and harvested. The sit-down tasting afterwards allows you to try a number of handcrafted wines, as well as the olive oils! One of the best parts is that each wine is complemented by seasonal bites from the farm and local purveyors!

Russian River Valley Wine Tours

Russian River Valley wine tours… visit the heart of Sonoma County. Growers and winemakers not only produce world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but also many other cool-climate-loving varietals that express themselves beautifully in this cooler region.

Morning fog that meanders up the valley from the ocean plus the cooling effects of the river itself make the Russian River Valley ideal for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Zinfandel is grown in the warmer, flatter portions of the Russian River Valley. This natural air-conditioning that the ocean and river provide allow for longer hang times and full flavored complexity.

Our personalized Russian River Valley wine tours will help you decide which of the more than 15,000 acres of grapevines, 35 varieties of wine and 110 wineries are the right match for you.

While all those vines, varieties and wineries provide for Russian River Valley tours of incredible diversity, there is a common thread among all the properties: hand-crafted wines of exceptional quality, richness and bright natural acidity and wineries made up of passionate and dedicated people who love the region.

Add to your visit by stopping at some of the diverse local shops in Healdsburg, Windsor, Guerneville or Sebastopol. Or perhaps dining at one of the many restaurants, catching a live performance on the Plaza or sampling some of the local gourmet products like artisan cheese will round out your experience.

With its coastal proximity and roadside tie-dye peddlers, Russian River Valley in West Sonoma County is cooler than neighboring Napa both in climate and laid-back style. Known for its fog-fed vineyards, abundant farms, and eclectic restaurants, no wonder people have been exploring the towns along the conifer-rimmed Russian River since the 1870s. The native Pomo called the river Shabakai, meaning “long snake,” before the Russians ever laid eyes on it. Always good to bring a towel just in case — there are as many swimming spots as there are places to refuel and refresh afterwards.

What follows is a mere sampling of the wineries and eateries in the greater Russian River Valley, with all manner of palate-pleasers: from Old World tapas to all-star biscuit sandwiches to award-winning food truck barbecue. Pack a sweater and linger over earthy pinot noir or a hoppy IPA — or one of many flavors of handmade ice cream.

The latest CDC guidance for vaccinated diners during the COVID-19 outbreak is here ; dining out still carries risks for unvaccinated diners and workers. Please be aware of changing local rules, and check individual restaurant websites for any additional restrictions such as mask requirements. Find a local vaccination site here .

Big Bottom Market

Hailed as one of Oprah’s favorite things in 2016, Big Bottom’s biscuits are delicious enough to eat on their own, but also serve as the perfect vehicle for anything from honey and butter to salmon, crème fraiche, pickled onions, and capers. Grab a picnic lunch and hit nearby Johnson’s Beach (spots available by reservation), which has been a favorite among boaters and swimmers since the 1920s. Big Bottom also carries three exclusive wine labels, including a Perpetual Indulgence rose and pinot noir—a dollar per bottle is donated to the beloved Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the charity of drag queen nuns who raise awareness and funds for gender equality and sex education.

Mirroring its clean and simple aesthetic, Brot (German for bread ) serves unpretentious German food done right. Teeming with purple cabbage and haus -made kraut, this might be the most beautiful hamburger in the county. Chef Crista Luedtke also slings classics like Bavarian pretzels, spatzle with speck, schnitzel, and wurst plates. Fresh salat with little gems or kohlrabi and apple nicely balance the meat, which is mostly organic and locally procured.

Stumptown Brewery

A trip to Guerneville is not complete without a stop at Stumptown, which has been keeping river folks fueled with Pale Ale and IPAs since 1997. Currently on tap are their Squirrel Tickler Cream Ale, Rat Bastard Pale Ale, and Donkey Punch Pils. Enjoy burgers and beers on the huge deck overlooking the Russian River, seven days a week. Patrons have access to their private beach and the still-swimmable water beyond.

The Farmhand

Opened in 2017 next door to Riverside Wellness Collective, Sonoma County’s first cannabis dispensary, The Farmhand is a perfect place to lose a few hours. Generous sandwiches are big enough to split — build your own or try standards like the veggie-packed Greek or the BLAST, a dressed-up BLT with avocado and sprouts. Hard to find a better setting: their wide grassy backyard includes picnic tables and an open area big enough for kids to play paddle ball while parents lounge in comfy Adirondack chairs.

Rio Nido Roadhouse

Tucked into the redwoods just off River Road, the resort community of Rio Nido occupies just one tenth of a square mile, but the Roadhouse, with its big lawn, shaded picnic tables, swimming pool, and outdoor stage, makes it worth a stop. For 14 years, through flooding and fires, owners Raena and Brad Jones Metzger have continued to serve classic pub fare, craft cocktails, and 16 mostly locally brewed beers on tap. Nachos get an upgrade with pulled pork or tri tip, and the popular artichoke-jalapeno dip comes with house-made chips. The scene is laid back and super family friendly.

The Altamont General Store

Newly renovated and opened, this bright, airy market and community space is housed in charming Occidental’s oldest building. The perfect spot to grab a quick nosh before heading out to the coast or the river, the Altamont also sells locally made jewelry, art, and novelty kitsch. Salads and sandwiches share the menu with hearty bowls like the Boho, a nourishing mix of stewed French lentils, roasted Brussels sprouts, arugula, chimichurri, kraut, and crème fraiche (rotisserie chicken or Kiawe smoked pork are also available for meat lovers). All manner of delightful pick-me-ups are available at their full coffee bar.

The quaint little town of Forestville is surrounded by towering redwoods and anchored by the delightful Canneti, the dream come true of Chef Francesco Torre, formerly of Fish in Sausalito. Seafood is well represented here — wild Alaskan salmon carpaccio, pasta with grilled Mediterranean octopus, and roasted sturgeon with Brussels sprouts and peas all grace the menu — as well as unexpected appetizers like the crispy beef heart tomato skins with house caper mayo. Save room for sugar cookie cannoli or tiramisu with espresso sauce, perfect with or without a sweet Vin Santo del Chianti on the shaded back deck.

Bravas Bar de Tapas

Arguably the most visionary restaurateurs in Sonoma County, the Starks operate seven distinct, wildly popular restaurants— but the crown jewel just might be Bravas. One of downtown Healdsburg’s hot spots, here you’ll find a nice mix of chilled and warm tapas like roasted escarole salad, gazpacho, tuna belly salad, creamy chicken croquetas, crispy pig ears, and Dungeness crab–stuffed piquillo peppers, as well as a ham and cheese station, family-style paella, and perfectly fried rum balls for dessert. The cocktail menu is foolproof — from the kicky Feel the Bern (with habanero tequila, ginger agave, lime, orange, and mezcal) to the sublime Strawberry Fields Forever (with tequila, elderflower liqueur, strawberry agave, lime, and basil salt).

Davis Family Vineyards

Guy and Judy Davis founded their vineyard in 1997, and together with sons Cole and Cooper, the family maintains an organic farm and produces mostly pinot noir from five different vineyards throughout Sonoma County. Visitors to their tasting room can enjoy the garden lounge and bocce ball court just steps away from the Russian River. They are open for outdoor, socially distanced tastings every Thursday through Sunday.

The Black Piglet at Davis Family Vineyards

The food truck of celebrity chefs and also downright cool people Duskie Estes and John Stewart of Zazu restaurant (now closed), the Black Piglet features their award-winning pasture-raised pork, which cures for some three weeks with brown sugar before finishing with a 12-hour applewood smoking. The menu is short, and yet still it’s hard to choose between a BLT with Tabasco aioli or pulled pork with apple slaw and chicharron; when it comes to the kimchi fries and  bacon caramel popcorn, might as well try both. Find them Saturdays and Sundays at Davis Family Vineyards all summer long.

Wicked Slush

Right across from Veterans Memorial Beach, Amy’s Wicked Slush has almost always had a line (luckily swift-moving) since it opened in 2017. Sometimes called Italian ice, slush is creamy and lick-able, a friendlier version of a sno-cone, and pairs nicely with Straus Creamery soft serve (known as a “split”). With enough flavors to make your head spin, the combinations are endless, but you can’t go wrong with classics like root beer slush and vanilla soft serve. Try the Spumoni (cherry slush with pistachio soft serve) for a taste of owner Amy’s Bostonian childhood.

Horse & Plow Tasting Room

Winemakers Suzanne and Chris offer outdoor tastings on their pleasant two-acre garden property just off Highway 116 as it leads out of Sebastopol. In addition to a wide variety of wines, including their lovely organic dry rose of Carignane, their fermented ciders made with locally grown apples perfectly embody Sebastopol’s long history of apple production. Kick back to the live music on lazy Sunday afternoons.

Martinelli Vineyards & Winery

Founded by two young elopers from Tuscany in the 1880s, Martinelli is a six-generation family-owned winery. Their descendants are still farming “Jackass Hill,” the steepest non-terraced vineyard in the county planted by the original couple. From a more classically crisp Chardonnay to their old-vine Zinfandel to their rare Syrah with gamey notes of leather and tobacco, there’s something here for everyone. They offer tastings Thursday through Sunday on their outdoor terrace and inside the red hop barn. Walk-ins welcome, but reservations are highly recommended.

The Fertile Russian River

The Russian River is a main water supply for this amazing AVA. Marine, river and volcanic influences set the stage for the many variations of soil – a fertile magical foundation for the wine growers. The range of soil types: clay, volcanic, sandy loam and silt-clay-sediment churned by the river current. Pinot Noir. Zinfandel and Chardonnay fruit grows very well in the existing microclimates. The fog belt created by the coast parades the mornings. After it subsides and it becomes hot in the afternoon. This is a perfect table for these sometimes finicky grapes. The evenings cool so the grapes can recover from the afternoon heat. The weather cycle is consistent through harvest. A Little Russian River History

The Russian River Valley wine country evolved in the nineteenth century into the twentieth. Prohibition put the bung in the hole as many wineries closed under the pressure. Like the other Sonoma AVA’s – Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley, bootlegging and Sacramental wine was the market. Many wineries sold or went out of business. In the 1970’s , nearly 50 years later it was booming again. The industry has recovered and wine tours in Sonoma is a daily occurrence. Since then it has grown to over 140 wineries and over 30 wine grape varieties of wine grapes are planted. Wine tasting in Russian River is a sought after pastime of wine tasters around the world. The Russian River Valley is the closet wine valley to San Francisco. It is a great place to do a wine tour and has achieved recognition like the Napa and Sonoma Valleys.

Landmark Vineyards

One of Sonoma County ’s 19 AVAs (American Viticultural Areas), the Russian River Valley AVA spans over 150 miles and 15,000 acres. Home to 90+ wineries, the Russian River Valley AVA makes up close to one-sixth of Sonoma County’s total planted vineyard acreage. Within the larger Russian River Valley appellation there are two sub-appellations or sub AVAs: the Chalk Hill AVA and the Green Valley AVA.

The Russian River Valley is best known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It’s really this region that put California (and Sonoma County) on the map as a world-class quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producing region, and the wineries below have played no small part in contributing to that reputation.

Pick and choose from the below wineries to craft the perfect Russian River Valley Pinot Noir weekend itinerary.

Landmark Vineyards at Hopkiln Estate

Landmark Vineyards

Landmark ’s Hop Kiln Estate tasting room is housed inside the winery’s historic stone hop kiln building, a registered California historical landmark. Offering unique indoor and outdoor tasting experiences in their historic stone building or out on the lawn and courtyard, which feature expansive views of the estate, Hop Kiln Estate is recognized for being one of the most unique historic sites in Sonoma County.

Landmark sources fruit from vineyards that each claim a unique microclimate and soil composition, laying the groundwork for great wines that start with stellar fruit that express the terroir of the sites where they were grown. In addition to Landmark’s estate grown Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, the winery also offers Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays made with fruit sourced from cool vineyard sites in Santa Barbara County, Monterey County, and the Sonoma Coast.

Insider Tip: Not sure if you’ll have time for lunch between tastings? Landmark’s Hop Kiln estate tasting room offers curated cheese and/or charcuterie platters to enjoy with your tasting. Reserving ahead is advised.

Bacigalupi Vineyards

Bacigalupi Vineyards

Crafting wines sourced from hallmark Russian River Valley Pinot Noir vineyards, Gary Farrell Vineyards & Winery was established in 1982. Considered one of a few quintessential Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers, the winery is known for producing wines of balance and elegance, made with fruit sourced from some of the most iconic vineyards in the Russian River Valley . The winery’s focus on vineyard sites is evidenced in the large number of single vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs they produce (more than 10 of each though many are members-only wines).

Gary Farrell made Wine Enthusiast ’s Top 100 wineries list in 2020 and has won numerous other awards and accolades over the decades, including regularly being awarded with very high scores for their Pinot Noirs by publications like Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator .

Insider Tip: The Exploration Tour & Tasting offers a unique, behind-the-scenes look at how Gary Farrell Vineyards produces their wines. The experience begins with a guided tour of the winemaking facilities and grounds before the star of the show—a tasting of five wines paired with artisan cheese .

Williams-Selyem

Williams-Selyem

Established in 1979 by Burt Williams and Ed Selyem, Williams-Selyem was founded in a garage (and known by another name) as a home winemaking project before growing into one of the most highly regarded wineries and Pinot Noir producers in the U.S. over the following decades. Williams-Selyem wines have been served at some of the most prestigious events in the U.S. including at the White House. The winery was also the first in U.S history (and in North America) to have a Pinot Noir awarded a perfect score by a major wine publication in 2009 (for their 2007 Litton Estate Pinot Noir).

Today, Williams-Selyem is home to a state-of-the-art winery and vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast.

Insider Tip: Tasting appointments at Williams-Selyem are exclusive to those on their “list” as the wines are highly allocated. Getting on said list requires purchasing wine from their twice-yearly allocations. There’s always a chance that non-list visitors can sneak in to a tasting reservation if you call or use the contact form on their website 48 hours in advance.

Pellegrini-Olivet Lane

Pellegrini-Olivet Lane

The Pellegrini family, having worked with grapes and wine since the 1920s in San Francisco, arrived on their Olivet Lane property (then a plum and apple orchard) in the 1970s. They were among the first in the Russian River to plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay using heirloom clones. Fifty years later, the winery has some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the Valley and enjoys a reputation for both crafting iconic Russian River Pinot Noirs and farming grapes that are used by many of Sonoma County’s most prestigious Pinot Noir producers (Williams-Selyem, Merry Edwards, etc.).

Guests can reserve a casual tasting in Pellegrini’s tasting barn or opt for a catered lunch tasting to enjoy five wines served alongside a cheese and charcuterie lunch board catered.

Insider tip: Keep an eye out for the winery’s friendly pet sheep, Nello, who thinks he’s a dog (loves to be petted and to be near people who have food) and roams around with a bell around his neck.

4055 West Olivet Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95401, (707) 545-8680

Dutton-Goldfield Winery

Dutton-Goldfield Winery

Located on the west side of the Russian River Valley, Dutton-Goldfield Winery started as a partnership between local grapegrower and fifth generation farmer Steve Dutton and winemaker Dan Goldfield in the late ‘90s. The winery is still independently owned and operated (something that is becoming increasingly rare in Sonoma County).

The focus at Dutton-Goldfield is on crafting wines made with fruit grown in cool, coastal vineyards that reflect the characters of these unique sites. The winery’s Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are made from fruit grown on sites within the Sonoma Coast, Petaluma Gap, Russian River Valley, and Green Valley AVAs.

Insider Tip: Try the Dutton-Goldfield Riesling and/or Pinot Blanc if they are available to sample. These are wines produced in very small amounts and that are less common to find in the Russian River Valley, but are wonderful examples of what the appellation is capable of.

3100 Gravenstein Highway N, Sebastopol, CA 95472, (707) 823-3887

Merry Edwards Winery

Merry Edwards Winery

While Merry Edwards Winery only opened its doors in the Russian River Valley in 2008, the Merry Edwards brand was established more than a decade earlier and the winery’s vineyards in the Russian River Valley were purchased in the late ‘90s. Since the advent of the Merry Edwards brand, the winery has been lauded as one of the most iconic Russian River Valley producers in the history of Sonoma County.

The success of the brand can be credited to the dedication, passion, and talent of founder and winemaker Merry Edwards (one of the first female winemakers in California that graduated from the U.C. Davis winemaking program) who spent decades making wines (primarily Pinot Noirs) and consulting for other wineries while slowly building her own brand. The wines that Merry Edwards has been best known for (and that have graced wine lists of many of the most prestigious restaurants in the country for decades) are their Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noirs.

Insider Tip: While in Sebastopol, we recommend visiting The Barlow (just 10 minutes from Merry Edwards Winery), for craft cocktails at Fern Bar or dinner at Blue Ridge Kitchen.

Balletto Vineyards is a family-owned and operated winery that sources all their fruit from their own vineyards, producing consistent, reliable, elegant wines that over-deliver. The family started grape-growing in the mid 1990s, and launched the Balletto brand in 2001 with the select top 10% of fruit grown on their vineyards. Today Balletto Vineyards farms 16 unique estate vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley AVA, all planted mostly to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The winery and tasting room is located to the northeast of Sebastopol. You'll enjoy this visit for the great wines and friendly people, with both indoor and outdoor spaces to spread out and enjoy your wine flight.

best wine tours in russian river valley

Nestled in the historic heart of the Russian River Valley, the property at Russian River Vineyards is truly one of a kind. With origins dating back to the 1890s, the iconic estate was built on the foundations of small-scale family farming. Over time, the old family farmhouse became a roadhouse. An old Hop Kiln style building became a winery. And as the burgeoning wine industry entered California, the pioneering property became home to one of the region’s first vineyards.

Today the vibrant property at Russian River Vineyards offers guests an unparalleled experience of “terroir” with world-class wines, served from the newly-renovated Tasting Lounge and surrounding winery grounds.

Wines Produced: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Charbono, Barbera, Merlot, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Red Blend

This is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the Russian River Valley! Great wine, great views and wonderful people. You can get a Cheese board, Deli board or a Mediterranean board and make a lunch out of these items. I highly recommended this spot! -GK, Google Review

As you venture into the beautiful Russian River Valley wine region, you'll find yourself surrounded by stunning vineyards and picturesque landscapes that will leave you in awe. But what sets this region apart is the world-class wineries that call it home.

As someone who has personally explored the Russian River Valley and its wineries, I can tell you that the experience is unforgettable.

Where Is the Russian River Valley?

Emeritus vineyards, merriam vineyards, russian river vineyards, bacigalupi vineyards, what makes russian river valley wineries so special.

The Russian River Valley AVA is a world-renowned wine region in Sonoma County, California, USA.

This region is known for its exceptional Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zinfandel grapes, which are highly sought after by winemakers and wine enthusiasts alike.

The unique combination of a cool climate, diverse soils, and a long growing season makes the Russian River Valley an ideal location for producing high-quality grapes.

The region's cool climate is influenced by the Pacific Ocean and the Russian River, which brings in cool fog from the Sonoma coast that moderates the temperatures.

The diverse soils in the region range from sandy loam to volcanic ash and provide a unique terroir for the grapes to grow in.

The long growing season in the Russian River Valley, with warm days and cool nights, allows the grapes to develop rich flavors and complex aromas.

Russian River Valley Top-Rated Wineries

So let's dive into some of the best Russian River Valley wineries I've had the pleasure of visiting and give you a taste of what makes each so impressive.

Emeritus Vineyards wine tasting (photo: Sarah Stierch)

The Russian River Valley is home to some of the finest wineries in California, and Emeritus Vineyards stands out as a true gem in the region.

This small winery is renowned for its exquisite Pinot Noir wines, crafted using sustainable farming practices and the latest winemaking techniques.

The first thing that struck me when I visited Emeritus Vineyards was the beautiful landscapes.

The winery's estate vineyards are on the hillsides above the valley floor, surrounded by majestic oak trees and vibrant wildflowers.

The rows of grapevines stretch out as far as the eye can see, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere perfect for a relaxing day of wine tasting.

The wine tasting itself was an experience like no other. The staff took the time to explain the history of the winery and the unique characteristics of their wines.

I was particularly impressed that they served us slightly chilled Pinot Noir , and the wine tasted much better than at room temperature.

I could taste the passion and dedication that went into every bottle of wine, from the careful selection of grapes to the meticulous aging process.

Iron Horse Vineyard in the Russian River Valley AVA, Sonoma County, CA (photo: Naotake Murayama)

As a wine enthusiast, I was eager to visit Iron Horse Winery in Sonoma County, California, and I was not disappointed.

The scenic drive up to the winery was breathtaking, and the views from the top were even more spectacular.

Iron Horse Winery is famous for its sparkling wines, crafted using the traditional method, also known as méthode champenoise.

As I sipped on their delicious sparkling rosé, I couldn't help but feel like I was on top of the world, surrounded by scenic vineyards and rolling hills.

But what really stood out to me about Iron Horse Winery was its commitment to sustainability.

To minimize their environmental impact, they have implemented numerous eco-friendly practices, such as solar power and natural pest control.

Clearly, the Iron Horse Winery team takes their responsibility to the planet seriously.

Merriam Vineyards is a beautiful winery nestled in the heart of the Russian River Valley.

This family-owned winery is dedicated to producing exceptional wines that reflect the region's unique terroir.

The tasting room was cozy and inviting, with large windows that provided incredible views of the vineyards and surrounding hills.

One of the standout wines at Merriam Vineyards is their Sauvignon Blanc. This crisp and refreshing wine is perfect for sipping on a warm summer day, with tropical fruit and citrus notes.

Their Chardonnay is also noteworthy, with green apple and pear flavors and a hint of vanilla from the oak barrel aging.

But the real star of the show at Merriam Vineyards is their red wines. Their Pinot Noir is elegant and complex, with aromas of cherry, vanilla, and spice.

The Bordeaux varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, are full-bodied and rich, with flavors of black fruit and chocolate.

Russian River Vineyards has a long history in the region, with the property dating back to the early 1900s.

Today, the winery is owned by Giovanni Balistreri, who is dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the property while also producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique character of the Russian River Valley.

The winery produces a range of varietals, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

They also produce a popular Rosé and sparkling wine. All of their wines are made with a focus on quality and terroir expression, with minimal intervention in the winemaking process.

Visitors to Russian River Vineyards can enjoy tastings in the winery's historic tasting room or outside on the beautiful patio overlooking acres of vineyards.

The winery also offers a variety of events throughout the year, including live music and food pairings.

Located in the heart of the Russian River Valley, Bacigalupi Vineyards is a beautiful and peaceful winery that offers a unique wine-tasting experience.

Bacigalupi Vineyards gained fame in 1976 when their Chardonnay grapes were used to produce the winning wine in the “Judgment of Paris” blind-tasting competition.

As you approach the winery, you'll see rows of grapevines stretching out as far as the eye can see, with the rolling hills of Sonoma County in the background.

Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by friendly staff who will guide you through a range of tasting experiences.

One of the highlights is the vineyard tour , where you'll get to walk among the vines and learn about the history and techniques of winemaking.

You'll also get to taste their unique Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and experience the terroir that makes Bacigalupi Vineyards' wines special.

Russian River Valley wine grapes (photo: Naotake Murayama)

The morning fog and cool climate make the perfect environment to grow some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes.

These wineries are even more remarkable because many are family-owned and run. When you visit, you can feel the personal touch and care that goes into every bottle.

The winemakers have a true passion for their craft, which shows in their wines' exceptional quality.

But it's not just the wine growers that make these wineries unique; it's also the soil.

The sand, loam, and clay mix provides the perfect drainage for the vines to grow deep roots and produce exceptional wine grapes.

If you're a wine lover like me, you must visit the Russian River Valley in Northern California.

The lovely views, warm hospitality, and delicious wines can make for an unforgettable experience that will stay with you long after you've left.

Trust me. This is one wine country destination you don't want to miss!

Russian River Wine Tours

best wine tours in russian river valley

The Russian River Valley is a beautiful play land in Sonoma wine country. The Russian River speckled by rafts and kayaks and well appointed by majestic redwoods is the main water supply for this wonderful American viticulture area. Grape growers delight in the range of soil types: sandy loam, clay, volcanic and silt-clay-sediment created by the river. All are perfect growing soils for a variety of grapes but love to kiss the vines of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit. The fog belt created by coastal access dominates the mornings. It burns off and it becomes hot in the afternoon, the perfect venue for these sometimes temperamental grapes. The evenings are also cool so the grapes can recover and relax. Consistent from spring through harvest time it is probably what makes this appellation terroir a special place to craft wine.

Like it’s other sister AVA’s , Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley, it was planted in the nineteenth century only to be guzzled up by prohibition. Sacramental wine and a bit of bootlegging were the varieties and many wineries went out of business. It was replanted in the 1970’s and became the home to some big boys like Gallo and Kendall Jackson. Since then it has grown to over 130 wineries and 30 different varietals of wine grapes are planted. The Bohemian Club, a big secret of the rich and powerful, is nestled here amongst the trees and along the river. You can’t get in unless you know the secret password and have a five star security clearance. There is plenty to see and taste if you don’t.

Russian River Valley extends from Santa Rosa to Forestville just adjacent to Healdsburg. It is the closest to San Francisco other than Napa and Sonoma Valleys. It is a great place to do a wine tour because it has so many great elements. Great wine, unmatched beauty, coastal accents and a relaxed feeling. The people of this region are welcoming and their hospitality will have you coming back for more.

Our staff can assist when planning your day in the Russian River Valley. We have a diverse fleet of limousines, towncars, SUV’s and limo vans to fit your party. If you love Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, big redwood trees, rivers, coastal beauty…you are right…it is too obvious. This is wine country at it’s very best. Let us help hone your choices, plan your path through this wine country and make some appointments to do wine tasting at your favorite wineries.

2021’s Top 10 Winery Picks off Russian River Valley’s Iconic Westside Road

July 5, 2021 by Deborah Mines

best wine tours in russian river valley

Thought I’d share my favorite Top 10 , most fun, top notch wineries along Russian River’s highly touted Westside Road.  If you’re new to Russian River Valley and love artisanal Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel or Cabernet Sauvignon, I highly recommend planning a few days wine tasting on Westside Road.  Starting from the far west end of Westside Road, moving toward Healdsburg, here are my top 10 picks for 2021 ~ Cheers!

best wine tours in russian river valley

1.  Moshin Vineyards –  One of my all-time favorite wineries at the far west end of Westside Road!  Look for the giant metal hummingbird hovering over the treetops to guide the way to the tasting room.   Moshin is always fun and funky, with unique local art displayed in the tasting room.  There’s a wide range of of small production wines available for tasting, including sparkling wine and a great line up of Pinot Noir.  Friendly wine hosts engage with the guests and are eager to share their stories.

 2.  Porter Creek Vineyards –  No trip is complete without a visit to Porter Creek .  The dollhouse-like tasting room holds about six people comfortably but long-time wine host Jonathan will always make room for more.  The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines are meticulously crafted by winemaker Alex Davis, who studied viticulture at the Université de Bourgogne before taking the reins at the family winery.  Other varietals produced include Viognier, Syrah, Zinfandel and Carignane.

3.  Thomas George Estates – Plan ahead and reserve a cave wine tasting or take a wine safari aboard a vintage Pinzgauer to the top of Baker Ridge vineyard to revel at the panoramic view.  Enjoy an estate four course picnic lunch, complete with a select bottle of estate Pinot Noir.  T homas George was originally a hop kiln in the 1920s, later owned by the late wine pioneer Davis Bynum who planted some of the first Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Grenache Noir in Russian River Valley.  Truly a spectacular property with gorgeous lush gardens and towering trees, and of course, a wine cave.

4.  Landmark Vineyards at Hop Kiln Estate –  Heading toward Healdsburg at a hairpin turn, you’ll find the historic Walters Hop Kiln.   Built in 1905 by a crew of Italian stonemasons, it represents the finest existing example of its type, consisting of three stone kilns for drying hops, a wooden cooler, and a two-story press for bailing hops.  In the late 1890’s, the property was a stagecoach stop.  Here you’ll find mostly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Grenache and Pinot Gris.  Now corporate-owned by Landmark, the ambience is still rustic and worthy of a quick stop to grab a glass and marvel at the restored hop kilns.

5.  MacRostie Winery & Vineyards –  Hands down, some of the best views along Westside Road, looking out to Mount Saint Helena and the Mayacamas.  One of the newer wineries, MacRostie, is always packed to capacity, so reserve days ahead.  The tastings are seated and not rushed, with great individual interaction with entertaining and knowledgeable wine hosts.  Guests are greeted with a cold glass of Rosé or Sauvignon Blanc, depending on the season, and escorted to a view table. Side by side tastings are common with the many single vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines.  Can’t say enough about MacRostie ~ it’s top of the list for me!

6.  Bacigalupi Vineyards –  Best known for the grapes in the 1973 award-winning Chateau Montelena Chardonnay in the movie Bottle Shock.  Still family-owned, Bacigalupi is a nice respite off the main road.  The twin adult granddaughters work in the tasting room occasionally, while father John , renown RRV grower, can be found in the vineyards. Most of the grapes are sold to other producers nowadays, however, there’s always pristine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to taste in the vintage tasting room.  Other varietals include Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and late harvest Muscat.

best wine tours in russian river valley

8.  Matrix Winery –  Another fun stop on Westside Road, is Matrix ,where Pinot Noir is king.  Family-owned by Ken and Diane Wilson, Matrix always has a dizzying array of Dijon clonal Pinot Noirs.  It was here that my love for the 667 Dijon clone was discovered!  Like many wineries in Russian River, winemaking is a family affair, with daughter Victoria at the helm.  In addition to the small lot handcrafted Pinot Noir wines, Matrix offers Chardonnay, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel, all native grapes sourced from the RRV AVA.

best wine tours in russian river valley

10. Flanagan Vineyards –  Just a slight jog off Westside Road, is a little known gem, but definitely worthy of a sip and stay.   Flanagan is another family-owned winery, with father Eric and daughter Riley as the stewards of winemaking.  Grapes are sourced from Russian River Valley, Bennett Valley and the Sonoma Coast for the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir , Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.  Ask to try Riley’s Rows wines too.  These wines are over the top.  Riley started winemaking before she was even of legal drinking age.  Talent runs deep in the Flanagan family and shows in every wine.

New reviews of outstanding-rated reds from top Golden State terroirs in Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley, Napa Valley and beyond, up to 92 points

  • Aaron Romano

Senior editor James Molesworth is wrapping up his annual report on California Pinot Noir . On the heels of the classic 2021 vintage , many of the wines in the forthcoming report will be from 2022. While not quite of the same caliber as the previous vintage, many of these reds are exceptional, as this lineup of recently reviewed wines demonstrates. (All have scored at least 90 points on our 100-point scale !)

Among the top-scoring wines is a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir from Vivier . Founder and winemaker Stéphane Vivier was born and raised in Burgundy (where Pinot Noir originates), but he has been based in Napa Valley since 2002. His red, below, blends grapes from various coastal locales, including notable vineyards such as Gaps Crown. The result is a racy wine with rooibos tea, bitter cherry and blood orange notes, as well as a savory finish.

This lineup also includes J. Wilkes' Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley 2021, a pretty red with tea, damson plum and raspberry notes. Read on to get our score and full tasting note for this California Pinot Noir and seven others!

Tasting Highlights' wine reviews are fresh out of the tasting room, offering a sneak peek of our editors' most recent ratings—including scores and full tasting notes—to WineSpectator.com members.

wine and caviar tasting

While harvest is the busiest season for the people who make wine in Napa Valley, or any wine region for that matter, summer is the region’s tourism fully comes to life. Route 29 and Silverado Trail, the parallel roads that run up and down the valley, will be backed up in both directions with wine lovers, while tasting rooms, restaurants, and hotels will be bursting at the seams as oenophiles flock to America’s favorite wine region. We have our go-to spots and activities, like sharing a private cabana with friends at Louis M. Martini for a food and wine tasting, enjoying a glass of Quintessa while taking in the winery’s panoramic views, or savoring a mezze plate alongside a flight of wine at Darioush , but we’re always on the lookout for something new. With more than 400 wineries and tasting rooms to choose from, planning a visit to Napa Valley can seem overwhelming, but if you have to be the first one to experience the latest thing, you don’t want to miss out on these new additions to the Napa scene.

Maison Fayard

best wine tours in russian river valley

French born winemaker Julien Fayard has just made it easier than ever for wine lovers who like his style to find bottles that have felt his touch. Maison Fayard in downtown Napa is the first of its kind wine shop, featuring Fayard’s own labels Les Vins Julien, Julian Fayard Wines, and Covert Estate, plus juice from two dozen boutique wineries that he works with in Napa and Sonoma and beyond. No other renowned winery consultant has yet to launch a dedicated bottle shop and tasting room. Fayard is also making grape-based brandy in response to climate change and is focusing on small lot, artisanal Napa Valley spirits. Maison Fayard hosts private tastings by appointment and features several lines of fine glassware.

If you’ve already been there and done that with the wine train and hot air ballooning, the next step is gathering your gang for a custom three-hour cruise up and down the Napa River. The 55-foot power catamaran Kiwi Kat is one of a kind, designed to navigate the river’s shallows while you and a party of up to twelve enjoy pours from small, family-owned wineries alongside appetizers and small bites made with local ingredients. With fully customizable options, you can bring in a chef for a food and wine extravaganza or go all out and hire a justice of the peace for a wedding on the water. You will truly be in the lap of luxury as you cruise past rolling vineyards and majestic mountains. No matter how many times you have been to Napa, you’ve never seen it like this.

JCB St. Helena

best wine tours in russian river valley

At the pre-opening party of this latest addition to Jean-Charles Boisset’s collection of tasting rooms and wineries, one of us said that it looks like a cross between a high-class bordello and the Sistine Chapel. We mean this in the best possible way. On Main Street in St. Helena, this is the perfect spot to savor wine from the Boisset family’s properties in Napa, Sonoma, Burgundy, Champagne, and Chablis among Baccarat chandeliers, red velvet and tiger-striped upholstery, and a combination of original art and repurposed works from museums around the world. The extensive menu of wines by the glass, flight, or bottle is only available at this location and one unique option is a comparative tasting of wines from California and Burgundy. Decadent food pairings, including cheese, charcuterie, and exclusive JCB caviar perfectly complement the diverse portfolio of wines.

Outdoor Estate Tasting at Baldacci Family Vineyards

best wine tours in russian river valley

As we roll into summer, Baldacci Family Vineyards has opened up the terrace for its brand-new Outdoor Estate Tasting . Hosted on the open-air Estate House Terrace, this experience begins with a welcome splash of Pops sparkling, a delicious blanc de noirs from Carneros, followed by a taste of three limited-production, single-vineyard, estate-grown wines, including two new Cabernet Sauvignons, paired with seasonal small bites. Guests may choose either Chardonnay or Pinot Noir and then enjoy Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon and Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon. Set among Baldacci’s organically farmed vineyards, this tasting allows you to relax and take in the natural surroundings in the heart of Stags Leap District on Silverado Trail.

White Wine and Caviar Experience at Silverado Vineyards

wine and caviar tasting

Tasting in Napa Valley can seem like an all red wine, all the time marathon for those who prefer a lighter shade in their glass. White wine connoisseurs are in luck with Silverado Vineyards’s newly launched White Wine and Caviar Experience. Available in the morning or afternoon, it features a hosted white wine and caviar tasting offering Silverado’s portfolio of white wines paired with caviar, house-made potato chips, and crème fraîche. Guests will learn about Silverado’s history and winemaking styles while tasting four white wines and a special pour of the newest vintage of the Stags Leap SOLO Cabernet Sauvignon. This is just one of the new tasting options at Silverado, which has been completely updated since its acquisition by Foley Family Wines two years ago.

Best Things to do in Douro Valley Portugal

L isted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Douro Valley Portugal is the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. Nestled in Northern Portugal, the valley is known for its beautiful lookout points, charming villages and abundant wineries. About an hour from the city of Porto, the Douro wine region can easily be visited on a day trip or a long weekend trip while visiting Portugal . Viking River Cruises also offers an intimate longship journey through the Douro.

Table wine and port wine are produced here and shipped all over the world. Spend the day exploring vineyards, crushing grapes with your feet or sampling local wines. In addition to wine tasting , visitors can take a river cruise on the Douro River, go hiking and visit a natural park. Plus, be sure to explore the valley’s villages. Read about these activities, and more, with our roundup of the 6 best things to do in Douro Valley Portugal.

1. Visit a winery

A trip to Douro Valley would be incomplete without a visit to a winery. Quinta da Pacheca in Lamego sits in the heart of the Douro Valley. One of the region’s oldest wine estates, Quinta da Pacheca is a winery, hotel and olive producer all-in-one. Wine lovers can take a guided tour of the winery, book a tasting, go grape stomping, participate in an olive harvesting experience and more. The wine hotel features traditional guest rooms or for something a little more adventurous, guests can go glamping in huge wine barrels.

In addition, Quinta Nova is another hotel and winery that goes way back. Here, visitors can go wine tasting, take a wine-making class, enjoy a vineyard tour at sunset and order traditional Portuguese food at the winery restaurant. Plus, there is a museum associated with the winery that preserves its history.

Quinta do Seixo

Visit Quinta do Seixo for beautiful views over the valley. This winery is part of the Sandeman brand, a popular port wine producer. Here, visitors can have a picnic in the vineyard, take a guided tour of the estate or book a tasting. Quinta do Vale Meao is another famous winery. In the city of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, this winery is family-owned and a great place to learn about Douro Valley wine production.

2. Take a boat tour through the Douro River

One of the easiest ways to see the Douro Valley is from a boat trip down the Douro River, which stretches from the Soria Province in Spain to Porto. In fact, wine was traditionally carried down this river in Rabelo boats, long flat boats, recognizable by the long oar protruding from the back. The wine was then stored in Porto wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, many boats make the same journey, this time carrying tourists as part of organized river cruises.

There are short boat trips that depart from Pinhão or longer ones that leave from Porto. Many tours include wine tasting and lunch. The longer tours from Porto typically make stops at some of the smaller villages along the river valley. Click here  to select the right tour for you.

3. Go to a lookout

The Douro Valley is known for its amazing lookout points. São Leonardo da Galafura is one of the most famous lookouts. Here, visitors will be greeted by stunning views of terraced vineyards, rolling hills and the meandering Douro River. There is also a chapel and a picnic area.

São Salvador do Mundo is another breathtaking viewpoint. It’s perched at the top of a hill, and although you can drive up part of the way, you’ll have to walk the rest, but the views are certainly worth the walk. The Valeira Dam, open countryside, lush greenery, rugged slopes and the beautiful Douro River are all visible from the viewpoint.

The Miradouro de Casal de Loivos is another amazing place to soak up the Douro Valley’s natural beauty. It’s located near the village of Casal de Loivos and can be reached by car. From here, viewers can look over Pinhão, the Douro River and several wineries spanning the hillside.

4. Visit the Douro International Natural Park

Immerse yourself in the valley’s untouched nature while hiking in the Douro International Natural Park. This protected area is close to the Spanish border and features a deep river canyon, majestic cliffs, olive trees and many different animal species, including wolves, wild boar, cave bats and Egyptian vultures.

For panoramic views of the canyon, head to one of the park’s many beautiful viewpoints. Penedo Durão is the best viewpoint for birdwatching and Miradouro de Penha das Torres is a great place to see the sunrise. If you’re not sure where to start your adventure to the Douro International Natural Park, book a guided tour, such as this one with Ambieduc .

5. Visit the Douro Museum

Dive into the valley’s history at the Douro Museu or the Museu do Douro. Located in the small town of Régua, the museum is housed in a historic wine warehouse on the riverfront. Exhibits showcase the history of the wine-making industry in the Douro Valley, and its impact on the local community. In addition, you’ll learn about the geographical features of the valley and why these are so well suited for producing wine.

After exploring the museum, enjoy a glass of wine at the on-site wine bar. Visitors receive one complimentary glass of port or table wine with their ticket. For those based in Porto, the museum can be reached by train from the São Bento Station or through a boat tour from Porto.

6. Visit the small towns

When you’re not wine tasting or soaking up the views, explore the charming towns scattered throughout the valley. The town of Lamego boasts a beautiful historic chapel sitting atop a grand staircase. The chapel, called the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, was constructed between the 18th and 20th centuries. It features a variety of architectural styles, including Baroque, Romantic and Gothic. The outside of the chapel is decorated in stunning blue and white tiles, called azulejos. Lamego is also home to other historical sites and museums, located just down the hill from the chapel.

Travel Train

If you love azulejos, be sure to visit Pinhão train station, built in 1937. Pinhão is also centrally located, close to many of the most popular wineries, making it a convenient place to stop. There is also a historical train that stops in Pinhão. There is wine and often entertainment on the train.

The train departs from Peso da Régua, another popular town in the Douro Valley. Since many boat tours also depart here, there’s plenty to do for tourists. for example, walk along the Régua pier, check out the town’s churches and grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.
