Samsonite has been manufacturing quality suitcases since 1910 as one of the most trusted luggage brands in the travel industry, and it’s one of the oldest luggage brands, too. From carry-ons to backpacks, Samsonite makes a variety of luggage for any type of traveler.

After dozens of luggage tests — including a Samsonite-specific lab test — our Travel + Leisure editors evaluated 41 pieces of Samsonite luggage like carry-ons, checked bags, backpacks, duffels, and weekender bags, evaluating each one. We packed the bags full to check capacity, rolled the bags through obstacle courses to test maneuverability, lifted them into overhead bins on our airplane set to see how portable they are, and hit them with baseball bats to check durability. Thirteen bags made it on our list of top Samsonite luggage pieces — keep reading to see what our editors love most about each bag.

Best Carry-on

Samsonite freeform carry-on spinner.

The wheels roll smoothly and the exterior is lightweight yet durable.

We wish there were a few more interior pockets.

The Samsonite Freeform Hardside Expandable Carry-on is the best carry-on we’ve ever tried , sweeping every testing category with positive feedback. In order to make sure we still adored the bag as much as we did when we originally tried it out two years ago, we recently retested it a second time in our lab and found that we were just as impressed. During our durability tests, the impact-resistant plastic exterior proved to be exceptionally durable after we hit it with a metal baseball bat several times and saw zero signs of scuffing or denting. We love the simple design of the exterior, and there is a TSA-approved lock on the side that’s easy to use. The interior has several pockets and compression straps, but we would have liked to see one or two more pockets for additional organization.

We were able to fit enough clothes for a four-day trip without having to use the helpful expandable zippers, and even when it was packed full, the wheels rolled easily and the sturdy handle was comfortable to grip. "The wheels glide like a dream," T+L editor Taylor Fox says. "They're really smooth and went over the curb without a problem, back and forth. The 360-degree wheels also worked well around all of the obstacles."

After six months of regularly traveling with this bag, it shows no signs of wear and tear, other than the occasional scuff we can remove with our fingers. We think this is a great bag for frequent fliers who value durability and a fair price.

Best Checked

Samsonite winfield 2 hardside.

This large suitcase is lightweight but very durable.

The exterior might get scratched over time.

Our reigning champion for the best checked bag we tried, the Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside Luggage wowed us during testing in every category. The exterior is made with a lightweight polycarbonate material, but the outside didn't get dented or damaged at all after we threw it and hit it with a baseball bat multiple times. However, when we traveled with the bag over the course of three months, the corners scuffed up pretty quickly, so you can expect some scratches when you check it.

We were able to fit outfits and shoes for nearly a week of traveling, and we love the compression straps and dividers on the inside compartments that secure the clothing once it’s packed, and you can expand it if you need more room. We think this is the perfect checked bag for maneuvering busy airports or streets because the wheels work so well that you can push the suitcase in an upright position or pull it behind you without struggling. During real-world testing, we found that it was easy to maneuver thanks to the lightweight shell, which we appreciate in a fairly large bag.

The Details: 31 x 20 x 12.75 inches | 11.5 pounds | Expandable (1.5 inches) | Polycarbonate | 4 spinner wheels

Best Underseater

Samsonite spinner underseater.

It can fit enough clothes for a two-day trip, and it’s easy to maneuver around obstacles.

The bag fits under an airplane seat, but it’s a tight squeeze.

If you’re flying an airline with strict luggage restrictions or traveling for a quick business trip, a piece of underseat luggage like this one is convenient and functional. We were able to fit enough clothes for a two-day trip between the main compartment, the front zippered pocket, and the two side pockets. Plus, there is a USB charging port on the side of the bag so you can easily charge your device in an airport.

During our tests for maneuverability, we wheeled the bag around cones set up as an obstacle course, and we were impressed with how smoothly the wheels rolled and turned around tight corners. The extendable handles are incredibly sturdy so you would be able to transition to different types of flooring or onto elevators, escalators, or stairs seamlessly. While it took an extra push to get the suitcase under an airplane seat, it was able to fit without too much effort. Of all the smart luggage we tested , this was our favorite underseater.

The Details: 16.5 x 13.8 x 9 inches | 5.6 pounds | USB port | Polyester | 4 spinner wheels

Best Zipperless

Samsonite tru-frame carry-on spinner.

The trunk latches are secure, sleek, and stylish.

It's a compact carry-on without expandable features.

When zippers break on luggage, it's usually game over. With latches, you'll never have to worry about a snagged or broken zipper ever again, so we love the Tru-frame Carry-on. According to our testing editor Jackie Cucco , the polycarbonate material proved to be especially durable during testing when the shell and the latches were not phased after she hit it with a baseball bat or tossed it off a table. Our packing list had a variety of clothing items on it, but we were only able to fit about half of the packing list inside the carry-on, which included several tops, one pair of pants, undergarments, one pair of shoes, and a toiletry case.

While we couldn't fit everything on the list, Cucco noted that the various pockets and compression flap helped with maximizing the space. Because of the compact size, we found that the suitcase is easy to roll around obstacles and over rough surfaces like carpet and stones. After testing wrapped, we determined that the suitcase is best suited for shorter trips, meticulous packers, or as a supplement to a larger checked bag due to the smaller capacity, but we still love it for how portable it is when you are looking for something light. After traveling with it for three months, our thoughts remained the same: it's a compact carry-on, but it does the job if you don't need a lot of space.

The Details: 22.6 x 15.3 x 9.7 inches | 7.5 pounds | Polycarbonate | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best With a Laptop Compartment

Samsonite just right carry-on spinner.

It has a ton of pockets for storage and comes with packing cubes and a toiletry case.

The material scratched and dented more easily than we hoped.

The Samsonite Just Right Carry-on has an impressive number of pockets and compartments for storing every travel essential you need. Senior editor Lydia Price 's favorite part of the suitcase is the spacious and protective front pocket that can store a laptop , phone, wallet, and tablet, and there's even a built-in toiletry case on the opening flap. "When it comes to hardside rollers, the laptop computer adds a really great element of accessibility," Price notes. Plus, the suitcase comes with two large packing cubes for extra organization while packing.

While the expandable zippers help add more space, the suitcase was able to fit our designated packing list with room to spare, so the capacity is quite generous despite the front pocket taking up a good chunk of one clamshell compartment. Similar to most of the Samsonite bags on this list, the bag was a breeze to wheel around, and the handle felt perfectly sturdy. We did notice that the polycarbonate scuffed and dented during our durability tests, so we wish the material was a bit more hardy.

When we took this bag out in the real world during our extended three months of long-term testing, we noticed the size of the bag was on the compact size, better suited for weekend trips than a full week. This likely won't be an issue if you're a light packer, but you might prefer a larger bag if you want a carry-on that can hold it all.

The Details: 22 x 14 x 9.3 inches | 7.9 pounds | Expandable | USB port | 15-inch laptop pocket | Polycarbonate | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Softside

Samsonite elevation plus carry-on spinner.

This softside carry-on has tons of pockets and organizational features that make packing easy.

The handle has many different height options, but they're so close together that it was difficult to adjust.

The Samsonite Elevation Plus Global Carry-on Spinner earned the top spot as our favorite softside suitcase for its interesting design and how durable it felt. Softside bags offer more flexibility when packing because even if they're not expandable, the material has more give if you need to overstuff it. This bag has plenty of organizational features, including two large zipper pockets on the outside, a wet pouch, a laundry bag, a built-in AirTag pocket, and a removable pocket panel that you can snap on or off. You can adjust the handle with multiple 1-inch increments; we counted seven different height levels in total, but they were so close together that it was a bit difficult to adjust. After using this bag for three months, we noticed how lightweight it felt and how easy it was to lift into overhead bins and roll around the airport. At the moment, it's only available in one navy blue color.

The Details: 22.5 x 14 x 9 inches | 6.7 pounds | Recyclex polyethylene terephthalate | 4 dual spinner wheels

Most Durable

Samsonite proxis medium spinner.

The unique outer shell material is flexible and durable.

We wish the interior had more organizational features.

Samsonite bags are known for their durability, and the Proxis Medium Spinner was one of the most durable we've tested. The hardside shell is made with Roxkin, a multilayered material designed by the brand that promises to be flexible and durable. We found that it holds up to this promise, as we saw no signs of damage after hitting it with a baseball bat during testing.

"What's great about this bag is that although it's a hardside, the outer shell has a lot of give to it which helped it stand up to the bat test way better than other bags I tested," explains senior editor Jasmine Grant . "This will definitely come in handy when your luggage is recklessly being tossed around through baggage claim." The bag also has a chic design that Grant loved, remarking that the suitcase was an "absolute stunner" thanks to the unique texture.

In addition to its durability, this bag is incredibly lightweight for a checked suitcase, coming in at just 6.9 pounds. There is also plenty of room for packing, due to the thin mesh lining sewn close to the shell, as opposed to the billowy nylon you see in most suitcases. This means there isn't an inch of space wasted, so we were able to fit our entire packing list with room to spare. Everything worked smoothly during testing, from the wheels to the zippers. We think this is a great option from Samsonite for anyone who values durability.

The Details: 27.2 x 18.9 x 11.4 inches | 6.9 pounds | Roxkin outer shell | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Expandable

Samsonite elevation plus large softside spinner.

Unzip the expander to add an additional 2 inches of space to this checked suitcase, giving you plenty of room to pack.

The wheels have a bit of a delay when making sharp turns.

Though many Samsonite suitcases on this list have an expandable zipper, this checked bag offers the largest expansion, increasing the depth of the bag by 2 inches instead of the typical 1 inch. We thought it was an incredibly spacious suitcase, with multiple interior and exterior pockets and a divider that all help with organization. It also has a built-in AirTag holder and a wet pocket to store toiletries.

We thought the bag felt light for its size and found it relatively easy to push and pull the luggage through our obstacle course, though the wheels delayed a little when we tried to maneuver the bag through cones at different angles. However, the weight felt evenly distributed, and the wheels performed well when we rolled the bag over different types of terrain. The softside material also held up well to baseball bat hits and even when we've checked this bag in real life during our long-term testing period. We think it's a great option if you're looking for an expandable, softside, checked bag.

The Details: 29.8 x 20 x 11.5 inches | 10 pounds | Expandable (2 inches) | Recyclex polyethylene terephthalate | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Laptop Backpack

Samsonite elevation plus backpack.

The backpack is already quite spacious, and it has an expandable zipper.

We wish the zipper wrapped all the way down both sides of the pack, not just one.

I have high standards when it comes to backpacks, and this one hit it out of the park for me in the lab when I personally tested it. I was able to pack everyday essentials like a laptop, water bottle, and an extra jacket, and once I discovered the expandable zipper, I added a pair of pants and several shirts. The capacity is sneakily large, which is ideal for various types of trips when you may need more or fewer items — or if you buy one too many souvenirs to fit in your carry-on.

Lined with thick padding in the back and on the shoulder straps, the backpack is comfortable to carry around, and it has excellent portability since it can fit underneath an airplane seat. The recycled polyester material didn't get damaged during our durability tests, so I expect this bag to last a long time, which only adds to the value. The only thing that could make this bag better is if the zipper went down both sides of the bag (not just one) to be able to pack easier, but otherwise, the bag got a perfect score (quite a rarity for me).

We also tested this bag on a trip to Italy during our three-month real-world period and continued to be impressed with its size and durability. It fit all the essentials for a day out without being too bulky or awkward to carry.

The Details: 17.8 x 12 x 6.5 inches | 2.2 pounds | Expandable (1.5 inches) | Laptop pouch | Recycled polyester

Best Duffel

Samsonite elevation plus duffel.

The nylon material is superdurable and can withstand rough handling.

It fits in an overhead bin but not quite underneath an airplane seat.

If you're traveling on a multileg trip, a carry-on duffel like this one might be the best option for portability purposes. The size is perfect for replacing a carry-on suitcase since it has a spacious capacity and plenty of storage solutions to stay organized on the go. Senior editor Jasmine Grant tested the duffel and loved the extra special features like the AirTag holder , wide trolley sleeve, and stunning sage green color for aesthetic purposes. Grant noted that the bag could fit all of the items on our packing list, and the handles were comfortable to use when the duffel was packed to the brim and heavy.

Since duffel bags often end up on the ground and tossed around during travels, Grant shared that her favorite part of the bag is the durable nylon material that didn't get scratched, scuffed, or damaged at all during our tests — even when we threw the fully packed bag off of a table multiple times — so we think it's ideal for carrying it on an airplane (although it can't fit all the way underneath an airplane seat, only in an overhead bin). During our three-month real-world testing period, we saw no signs of wear and tear after multiple uses.

The Details: 22 x 12 x 9 inches | 2.6 pounds | Expandable (3 inches) | Recycled polyester

Most Stylish

Samsonite virtuosa expandable carry-on.

It has sleek faux-leather accents that add a touch of elegance.

The handle got jammed when the suitcase was packed full.

Luggage can be just as stylish as it is functional, so we turn to the Samsonite Virtuosa carry-on to get the best of both worlds after testing it out in the lab. It's effortlessly chic and elegant thanks to the matte polycarbonate material that comes in pine green, navy, or cream — all colors that scream quiet luxury. It was a breeze to fill this spacious carry-on with enough items to last a week, and although we didn't have to use the expandable zippers, we appreciate that the option is there for adding an extra inch of space.

Hands down the best part of the packing process was using the WetPak pocket for storing toiletries or a wet swimsuit for the journey home. The only gripe we had with this suitcase was that the handle got a bit jammed when it was packed with clothes, so we had to jostle it to adjust the height. However, if we had used the expandable zipper, this likely wouldn't be a problem. The suitcase rolled like a dream around cones and over carpet, and we think this is still an excellent bag to bring with you on any trip.

We took this bag on one trip so far and were not required to check it at the gate like you sometimes have to do with carry-ons, but the bag is large enough that we aren't sure this will be the case on every flight, especially international flights that have smaller bag restrictions . We would definitely recommend checking with your airline before bringing this as a carry-on.

The Details: 23 x 15 x 10 inches | 6.4 pounds | Expandable (1 inch) | Polycarbonate | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Convertible Bag

Samsonite ecodiver small duffel.

You can either carry this bag as a duffel or wear it as a backpack.

We wish it came with a longer crossbody strap for even more ways to carry it.

Sometimes you need a bag that can do it all, and Samsonite’s Ecodiver Small Duffel comes pretty close. Thanks to removable backpack straps and top handles, you can carry it as a duffel bag or a backpack, making it ideal for weekend trips and shorter vacations. You can stow the backpack straps away when they're not in use, which allows this bag to keep its sleek, minimalist design regardless of how you use it. Made from postconsumer recycled PET outer material and black trim nylon, this bag felt durable during testing and didn't show any signs of damage after being tossed around. It's quite spacious and has plenty of compartments and pockets inside for organization. Our only complaint is that we wish it had a longer shoulder strap to make it easier to carry in duffel bag form as opposed to just the top handles. Otherwise, we think it's a solid option for travelers who want a convertible bag with great organizational features.

The Details:  21.6 x 12.2 x 9.4 inches | 2.2 pounds | Recycled PET, nylon

Other Samsonite Luggage We Liked

These Samsonite bags almost made the cut for our list of top performers but fell short during testing due to some minor inconveniences.

Samsonite Essens Carry-on Spinner : This lightweight bag is one of Samsonite's newer releases, featuring a three-point lock closing system in place of zippers. While we did find it easy to maneuver and lift, it was on the smaller side for a carry-on, and the handle kept sticking. Ultimately, we prefer the other carry-ons in our main list above.

Samsonite Just Right Standard Backpack : The backpack has a variety of pockets for organizing essentials, but the capacity is on the smaller side, which isn't always ideal for traveling.

Samsonite Andante 2 Wheeled Rolling Duffel Bag : We love the size of this bag as well as the durable handle for week-long trips. However, after our lab tests, the corners of the bag were already showing signs of scuffing from being dragged along the ground.

Samsonite Elevation Plus Medium Glider : This suitcase is unique with a square shape, so it can fit a ton of items, but because of the wide design, it's difficult to maneuver it.

Samsonite Hyperflex Large Spinner : It's extremely spacious, which is ideal for long trips, but the plastic feels a bit flimsy and scratched quite a bit in testing.

Samsonite Stryde 111 Carry-on Spinner : The carry-on has special features like a light on the handle and a USB port, and it includes a toiletry bag, but we expected the material to be a bit more durable with the higher price point.

We've conducted dozens of luggage tests in our T+L lab, trying out 31 total Samsonite bags across various tests. During testing, we evaluate each bag on traits like capacity, durability, design, maneuverability, and value.

Depending on the size of the piece of luggage, we pack each bag with items from a designated packing list to judge capacity and organization solutions like pockets, compartments, or compression straps. Suitcases and bags scoring highly for capacity and design are able to fit the perfect amount of items for the intended use of the luggage, with a functional amount of pockets and storage solutions throughout the bag.

Arguably the most fun part of testing is our durability portion, in which we throw each bag off of a ladder or tabletop, and then whack each suitcase with a baseball bat several times. Top-performing luggage shows little-to-no signs of damage after the tests, leading us to believe that the bag would have a long lifespan for travelers. We also set up obstacle courses with cones, carpets, and gravel to simulate different types of obstacles a traveler could encounter with a suitcase or bag. Our favorite pieces of luggage for maneuverability are easy to push, pull, or carry through the course and over a variety of surfaces thanks to a sturdy handle and tough wheels.

After we test each bag in the lab, we send it home with an editor to test during their real travels, taking notes on how it performs over the course of three to six months. We will continue to update this article with new results, especially as we test new models of bags.

Tips for Buying Samsonite Luggage

Decide if you want hardside or softside.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to the type of material a suitcase is made with, and it’s ultimately up to personal preferences. Softside luggage might hide scuffs or scratches better than hardside luggage , but if you spill something or the fabric gets wet, it could be harder to clean. On the other hand, hardside luggage can easily repel water or stains, but you might encounter more scuff marks from baggage handling and perhaps even some dents. Softside luggage is also more flexible if you end up overpacking more than you thought you would, while hardside shells are more rigid.

Decide if you want a luggage set

A luggage set can be the most cost-effective route if you’re looking to upgrade all of your luggage or if you want all of your luggage pieces to match. However, multiple suitcases can be harder to store, especially if you live in a smaller space. If you’re interested in trying multiple different brands of luggage, mixing and matching suitcases could be the better option for variety.

Know your organization preferences

Whether you’re an underpacker or overpacker, be sure to consider the type of trip you’re taking since a carry-on or a weekender bag might be better for a short trip versus a checked suitcase or a large duffel bag that’s better suited for longer trips. And, if you like to be extra organized while traveling, opt for a suitcase with plenty of storage solutions like pockets and other compartments for separating your items.

Frequently Asked Questions

Samsonite luggage is sold by a variety of retailers including Kohl’s , Amazon , Macy’s , Walmart , Bloomingdales , JCPenney , and directly from the Samsonite website . However, if you’re looking to scoop a suitcase for a discounted price, Amazon, Macy’s, and JCPenney usually have year-round deals on select Samsonite luggage pieces.

It depends on how often you travel, what kind of transportation you take, and your organizational preferences. If you’re a light packer, opt for a carry-on or underseater, whereas overpackers should consider getting a checked bag with plenty of storage solutions to optimize space. For weekend getaways , stick with a duffel bag or a carry-on backpack so you don’t have to lug a suitcase around.

One of the most popular Samsonite carry-ons, the Samsonite Leverage LTE Softside is a great piece for business travelers.

It comes in charcoal black for serious travelers and blue and maroon for those who want a bit more fun. A great feature is the 360 spinner wheels  that offer one of the smoothest rides of any suitcases you’ll ever find.

This Samsonite luggage is already an upgrade from many other popular Samsonite softside cases. It has improved rolling wheels and a more durable 400D x 360D Nylon exterior with both a weather-resistant coating and oil-resistant coating.

Not to mention the corner protection, which will help this case endure baggage handlers the world around.

The main handle has a deluxe, super comfy cushioning and long-lasting rubber seals on ours. Not to mention it is overall wider than most.

The interior of these bags is hard to beat. On the lid, it features a removable, interior zippered suiter and a  WetPak  for toiletries or wet clothing.  In the main compartment, it has another pocket for smaller items, and it comes with a trifold suiter to protect business attire.

Best Checked Samsonite Suitcase

Samsonite etude 30”.

Samsonite Etude Hardside Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Cedar Wood, Checked-Large 30-Inch

The Etude is a great option if you need a large, checked suitcase. It is made from Makrolon Polycarbonate , a very sturdy material. It bends upon impact, and it’s actually pretty hard to break open a PC shell. It also has a TSA-friendly combination lock , which lets you secure the packing compartments.

This Samsonite luggage features  double spinner wheels  that allow for easy maneuvering of your luggage. And there’s the telescopic wheel handle,  which locks into both extended and stored positions.

The wheel handle is entirely on the outside of the suitcase, and I love that. It means that you don’t have to deal with the tubes inside the main compartment, and it’s going to be much easier to pack your stuff.

And you will have plenty of space to do that, especially in the largest Etude. It has two packing compartments, one of which has a floating divider. The other compartment has a full panel zippered divider, and the  two compartments have a total of four zippered pockets.  This is pretty great for a hard side suitcase and allows for organized packing.

In addition to that,  the floating divider is entirely removable ; you can detach it from the suitcase compartment, pack everything you want in it and then reattach it again when you’re done.

This is pretty convenient, especially because you can attach a coat hanger head to it. Which allows you to hang this in your hotel room and have easy access to your necessities without unpacking your entire suitcase.

The capacity of the Etude is not expandable, and that’s pretty much the only thing I don’t really like about this particular Samsonite suitcase.

  • Allows for organized packing
  • Durable shell
  • Exterior mounted wheel handle
  • Capacity not expandable
  • A little heavy
  • Material: 100% Makrolon Polycarbonate
  • Security: TSA approved combination lock
  • Weight: 11.6 lbs
  • Dimensions: 31.88" x 21.65" x 13”

Best Softside Samsonite Suitcase

Samsonite aspire xlite 23”.

Samsonite Aspire Xlite Softside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Black, Carry-On 20-Inch

I’ve shown you several amazing softside Samsonite luggage so far. But my favorite without a doubt is the Aspire Xlite . If you’re looking specifically for a softside suitcase, you won’t have any regrets if you get this one.

We’re featuring the carry-on version here, but you should know that it’s available in a few other sizes as well, and you can also get a 3-piece set.

The Aspire Xlite is  a lightweight suitcase made mostly from Polyester.  It has  four single spinner wheels , so it is an upright suitcase. Which is not that common for softside luggage.

This Samsonite luggage also has  a telescopic wheel handle for easy maneuvering of your suitcase, as well as  several grab handles . That includes a grab handle on the bottom of its body, so it’s really easy to pick it up and place it in the overhead compartment.

Another thing you will love about this suitcase is its expandable capacity.  The packing compartment is pretty spacious even without the expandable capacity; it features elastic straps to keep your stuff in place and two pretty big zippered pockets.

One of those pockets is waterproof and designed to hold any wet items (Wetpak). Or your toiletries – it would be a lifesaver in case of a shampoo explosion.

On top of all that, you will also get  two external compartments  on this suitcase. They are really great for items you like to have handy and easy access; the smaller top pocket is just the right size to fit your ticket, boarding pass, and passport.

  • Great for organization
  • Expandable capacity
  • Spinner wheels
  • Handle is a little flimsy when extended
  • Material: Polyester
  • Security: No lock
  • Weight: 7.5 lbs
  • Dimensions: 23” x 13.5” x 9.5”

Best Hardside Samsonite Suitcase

Samsonite centric hardside.

Samsonite Centric Hardside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Caribbean Blue, Checked-Large 28-Inch

The Samsonite Centric is a humble hard-side suitcase that packs a punch. Like the ever-popular Omni, it is super affordable and loaded with features you will love.

It comes with 4 easy to roll spinner wheels, a TSA-friendly lock that only requires a combination, and a shell that is made from scratch-resistant Polycarbonate. Often you only find such material on more expensive cases, so having it on the Centric is a bonus. The pattern on the outside also means that it won’t show marks as easily and will look great for longer. Despite any rough treatment at the airport!

What more do you need in a suitcase? Well, it is also expandable, which is super-handy when you pack too much or buy too many gifts on your trip. And packing is very easy with the clamshell design. You have one compartment with elastic straps (I like to put larger items in there) and the other with a zippered mesh cover to keep everything in place.

There is also a small zippered pocket on the side for all those easy-to-lose items. Oh, and the easy-to-adjust telescopic handle makes it simple to whiz around the airport.

  • Wheel handle locks in multiple height positions
  • TSA friendly lock
  • Less organization pockets than some more expensive models
  • Material: 100% Scratch-resistant Polycarbonate
  • Security: TSA friendly combination lock
  • Colors: Available in 9 colors
  • Carry-on: 22.5 x 15.5 x 9.5”, 7.5 lbs
  • Medium: 26.5 x 17.75 x 11”, 9.0 lbs
  • Large: 30.4 x 20.9 x 12.4", 10.8 lbs

Best Zipperless Suitcase

Samsonite s’cure spinner 28".

Samsonite S'Cure Hardside Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Black, Checked-Large 28-Inch

Zipperless suitcases are the safest type of luggage to travel with. It is really difficult for a thief to break into your suitcase since there’s no zipper they can break open. Zipperless luggage normally features latch closure, which is true for Samsonite S’Cure Spinner .

This particular suitcase actually has  TSA-friendly latches,  so that only TSA agents are able to open up your luggage.

The S’Cure Spinner has a  shell made from Flowlite Polypropylene;  a remarkably lightweight but durable material. It’s able to withstand torture from baggage handlers, which is why we recommend this suitcase in the checked bag size.

In addition to that, this hard side luggage has  double spinner wheels  that glide smoothly and quietly. With the help of the  telescopic wheel handle , you will have zero issues maneuvering your suitcase through airport crowds.

And you can say goodbye to pain in your arms since spinner wheels mean that you never again have to tilt your suitcase just to get them rolling.

The interior of this Samsonite is divided into  two packing compartments . One of them has a full panel zippered divider, and the other has a very unique set of elastic straps that keep your clothes in place. They cover almost the entire compartment so that your stuff really can’t budge an inch.

In addition to that, the compartment with the straps is not lined. This gives you just a little extra space, but it does mean that your clothes could pick up the scent of brand new suitcase plastic.

We love many things about this suitcase, but its price is by far our favorite thing. At only a little over $120, the S’Cure Spinner is not just super safe, it’s also  extremely affordable.  Especially for a Samsonite suitcase!

  • Very secure
  • Great price tag
  • Durable exterior
  • Material: Flowlite Polypropylene
  • Security: TSA friendly latch lock
  • Weight: 10.2 lbs
  • Dimensions: 28” x 18” x 11.5”

Best Samsonite Underseat Tote

Samsonite wheeled underseater.

Samsonite Wheeled Underseater Large Navy

If you mostly go away on short business trips , you might not even need a suitcase. Consider getting an under-seat tote – they are really convenient for short trips, and they can fit all of your necessities for those few days.

The Wheeled Underseater is one of Samsonite’s best-selling pieces of luggage. It’s remarkably convenient for short travel  since it is small enough to fit under the seat on any airline. But it’s still large enough that you can pack everything you need, and do it in an organized manner.

The  interior of this bag features five pockets,  one of which is a  Wetpak . And the actual packing compartment is pretty spacious. The bag also has  three external compartments , for items you want to have more easily accessible. And there are zippered pockets in those compartments.

Another great thing about this under-seater is that it has wheels. They are in-line skate wheels , so you will need to tilt the bag to get it rolling. But that shouldn’t be an issue, thanks to the telescopic wheel handle that locks into position when extended.

That handle can also be stored in its own compartment, which is very convenient for when you’re taking this bag in addition to other luggage. In those cases, I think you will find the luggage strap in the back  extremely helpful; it lets you secure this bag on top of a larger suitcase, for effortless moving around the airport.

Plus, the Wheeled Underseater by Samsonite also features a pair of  grab handles  that allow you to carry this like an actual tote. It’s a great piece of hard side luggage with a surprisingly affordable price tag  and an absolute must for frequent flyers.

  • Very affordable
  • Excellent for organization
  • Luggage strap
  • Wheels are not a spinner
  • Material: 100% Poly/Nylon Blend
  • Weight: 5.51 lbs
  • Dimensions: 7.5” x 13” x 16”

Best Samsonite Duffel Bag

Samsonite luggage andante wheeled duffel bag 22”.

Samsonite Andante Wheeled Rolling Duffel Bag, Black/Grey, 22-Inch

Perhaps you’re wondering what’s the best duffel bag by Samsonite? That would have to be the Andante Wheeled duffel . It’s spacious, lightweight , and made from water-resistant polyester .

The price of the duffel varies according to the color you choose, but you can get it for as low as some $36, which is pretty amazing for Samsonite luggage.

The bag features a large U-zip opening, which gives you easy access to all your stuff. This also makes packing super simple and lets you organize all of your items however you like. Oh, and the numerous pockets will also help you with that.

One thing I really like about this duffel is that  i t has wheels. T he in-line skate wheels are protected by shock suspension housing, and they roll pretty smoothly. There’s also an extendable wheel handle, which has its own compartment that you can store it in.

There is also a pair of  grab handles at the center of this bag, which is held together with Velcro. Their positioning is great because it helps with weight distribution.

In addition to all that, this bag also features  lockable zippers, so you can have some peace of mind while you’re traveling. This is going to come in handy if you’re traveling by bus or train and have to part with your luggage at one point.

However, I would not recommend this duffel for air travel; it’s too large to be accepted as a carry-on, and not durable enough to survive the tough love of baggage handlers when checked. But it is a great option for pretty much all other means of travel.

  • Very lightweight and affordable
  • Lockable zippers
  • Water-resistant exterior
  • Not great for air travel
  • No compression straps
  • Material: Water-resistant polyester
  • Security: Lockable zippers
  • Colors: Available in 4 colors
  • Weight: 4.2 lbs
  • Dimensions: 22 x 12 x 12.5 inches

This rugged backpack is  made of  polyester and ballistic nylon  exterior for extra strength and durability. While it’s not water-resistant or waterproof, the pockets and compartments are all lined to keep your items from getting soaked.

It also retails under $100, so you get a great bag from a great brand without the hefty price.

The   padded and contoured dual-density shoulder straps also provide much-needed comfort while carrying a heavy bag.

The back also has padding for comfort and has a smart sleeve to secure it to a luggage handle. It comes with several pockets for organization.

At the very back is  a drop-in compartment that will fit a 17-inch laptop.  A quick-access top pocket fits small items that you’ll need all the time such as cash, cards, or earphones.

The  front  pocket is for tablets or iPads plus other essential items such as pens and a power bank. The packing space is roomy and has more compartments and organizers to keep your items in place.

On the sides, there is a pocket for a water bottle and a tricot-lined sunglasses pocket. If the bag is too hefty for you, it also comes in a medium size .

  • Lightweight and durable
  • Several pockets for organization and gadgets
  • Made for comfort
  • No security features
  • More ideal for business trips or day trips than luggage replacement
  • Material: 100% Ballistic Weave Polyester

Frequently Asked Questions

Why trust tripsavvy.

TripSavvy / Chloe Jeong

Known for hardworking suitcases that focus on functionality, Samsonite has been a favorite among savvy travelers since its foundation in 1910. In the years since, the company has expanded to offer backpacks, duffels, and accessories for every kind of journey, whether you’re off on a business trip or taking a long weekend with family. There are a few things you can count on when you’re buying a Samsonite bag: easy-to-handle wheels, quality fabrics, and thoughtful designs that work to hide those inevitable scratches and scuffs. To help you select the right piece, we put together a list of our favorites with an eye on price, style, and fit.

Best Overall

Samsonite winfield 2 hardside.

Multidirectional wheels

A dozen color options

Lock can feel flimsy

Samsonite’s Winfield 2 suitcase is built to withstand long journeys and arrive looking pristine. The suitcase is designed with a textured brushstroke exterior that helps hide any scratches or scuffs. The handles are also notably durable and often cited as a reason people buy this suitcase again and again. The interior comes with straps for easy packing, a divider, and organization pockets. It's available in multiple easy-to-spot colors, including orange, purple, burgundy, and light blue.

Our tester shared that the luggage won them quite a few compliments for its attractive hardside exterior but that the interior was just as great, with every inch of space maximized. They felt the price was more than justified based on the style and quality of the piece. It handled a pothole-laden, bumpy ride and arrived unscathed.

Best Budget

Samsonite omni pc.

Telescoping handle

Clamshell design for easy packing

Limited internal organization

The Omni PC Spinner is easy on the wallet but doesn’t skimp on any of the features or functions that make Samsonite a traveler's favorite. The 360-degree spinner wheels make going through the airport—or anywhere else—simple and easy on the back and shoulders. Packing is seamless, thanks to an interior divider and compression straps. One small but thoughtful feature our tester appreciated was the red expander zipper, which made it easy to distinguish from the main compartment zipper.

The bag weighs less than 10 pounds, making it a lightweight option by any definition, and it comes with side-mounted TSA locks to better deter theft. Our tester remarked on the textured shell, saying it is "unlikely to scuff like glossy alternatives."

There’s also a series of compression straps on the interior of the suitcase, making it easier to pack more.

When you want to skip the hassle of a checked bag, this carry-on is compact enough to fit in an overhead bin while still being sufficiently spacious for a good amount of clothes. It even includes a pouch for toiletries. The exterior has several pockets for items you'll need to reach for while at the airport or on the go, including a useful USB charge port. Meanwhile, the interior features a compression strap on one side and two zipper compartments on the other. If that's not enough, the material is water resistant.

Limited expansion

Expandable, spacious, and easy to maneuver, the Voltage DLX Large Spinner looks great on the concourse and is easy to recognize at baggage claim. Plus, the textured and grooved exterior disguises scrapes and scratches. You’ll also find a handy WetPak pocket on the inside of the suitcase, which is great for stowing liquids and toiletries. Other features include an interior mesh pocket, a zippered divider panel, and compression straps to help you fit those extra souvenirs in. This suitcase comes in four colors: dark graphite, pink, white, and teal.

Best Underseater

Wobbly handle

Designed to fit underneath most airplane seats, this carry-on is applauded for its easy-glide wheels, adjustable handle, and USB charging system. The softside design gives you an extra bit of flexibility that you won’t find with a hardside option when it comes to fitting it under the confines of an airplane seat. The larger outer pocket is great for items that will help you survive those long flights , and there’s an interior laptop pouch for secure stowing.

Size: 16.5 x 13.5 x 9 inches | Weight: 5.5 pounds | Material: Polyester

Best Backpack

Samsonite elevation plus backpack.

Hidden front zipper pocket

Attaches to rolling luggage

Not quite a full clamshell opening

Backpacks are essential luggage items that will most likely be at your side throughout your journey and must meet high expectations. The aptly named Elevation Plus Backpack did just that thanks to its surprisingly generous capacity, padded adjustable shoulder straps, and functional organization divided into a plethora of internal and exterior pockets and pouches. The beauty of this pack also shines in the details such as a tech "hammock" that prevents your expensive devices from hitting the ground and a 1.5-inch expansion feature.

Size: 17.8 x 12 x 6.5 inches | Weight: 2.2 pounds | Material: Recycled polyester

Most Samsonite suitcases come with the brand's famous easy-glide wheels, but if you’re looking for something that’s also lightweight and will hold up to a trip’s worst bruises, go with the Winfield 2 . The brushed exterior texture makes all the difference. If you're looking to ditch the wheels for a weekend getaway, reach for the Mobile Solutions Classic Duffel .

What to Look For in Samsonite Luggage

Samsonite is a relatively budget-friendly brand, offering suitcases and backpacks across a wide range of price points. Even the most affordable options promise the company's renowned quality construction and easy functionality, but you can expect to pay more for luxury features (think USB charge ports) or extra style details (such as leather accents or textured hardside shells).

Samsonite prioritizes versatile designs with plenty of practical features and a focus on function over fashion at times. The company has released more minimalist designs in sleek, neutral colorways. But at its core, Samsonite is a brand focused on sturdy, dependable travel accessories.

Samsonite suitcases are one-size-fits-all (within the three distinct categories of carry-on, medium checked, and large checked), with telescoping handles that adjust to different heights. Whether you want carry-on luggage for men or women, the brand offers suitable options for both. Backpacks and other wheel-less bags have straps that can be adjusted to your torso length—so whatever bag you go for, you're guaranteed a personalized fit.

Samsonite offers a limited 10-year global warranty on its products, which applies only to issues related to manufacturing errors. This warranty does not cover damage due to misuse or general aging and long-time use.

Samsonite suitcases are not waterproof in that they will let some water in if submerged. However, most are weatherproof, either because they are made of naturally water-resistant hard plastics such as polycarbonate or polypropylene, or because they are made from soft materials that have been specifically treated for water resistance. They should keep your belongings dry in all but the heaviest downpours.

No luggage is completely theft-proof, but Samsonite goes a long way to protect your belongings by using high-quality materials that are difficult to pierce, tear, crack, or slash. Most checked bags include an integrated TSA-approved lock to help keep contents secure.

Author Erika Owen heavily researched each and every one of the suggestions in this article and scoured hundreds of user reviewers in an effort to find the best travel accessories available from Samsonite.

Our top picks for the best luggage brands

samsonite business travel bag

Shop all luggage at Samsonite

When it comes to value, Samsonite makes excellent luggage at some of the best prices, which is why we named it our top overall pick for the best carry-on . Samsonite offers numerous options for roller bags, including both hard-side and soft-side carry-ons and checked luggage, as well as wheeled underseat bags and even roller duffels.

Samsonite also sells several two- and three-piece sets if you want to pair small, medium, and large roller bags together. In addition to traditional roller luggage, Samsonite also offers classic backpacks, wheeled backpacks, duffels, briefcases, wallets, dop kits, and more. There are even some cool wheeled garment bags that can fit under your seat and will fit far more than your typical folding or hanging garment bag. I've owned a Samsonite bag for over three years now and it's held up incredibly well.

Shop all luggage at Away

Away has multiple options for roller luggage, including hard-sided, expandable, and aluminum. Bags are available in both neutral hues and bright, eye-catching colors.

Away's stand-out feature used to be the removable battery pack for charging your electronics on the go, which was previously available as an add-on to its carry-on bags. While the brand retired that feature, we still think its bags have thoughtful extras like in-bag compression, built-in TSA-approved locks, and a removable washable lining.

In addition to roller bags, the brand also a range of other bags and travel accessories, including backpacks, duffels, pet carriers, totes, packing cubes, and more. I've personally owned Away luggage for years and can attest to its durability and practicality.

samsonite business travel bag

Shop all luggage at Travelpro

Travelpro mostly makes soft-side luggage and rightfully earned its spot as our top pick for the best soft-sided carry-on . I personally love the clear attention to detail that comes with a Travelpro bag, from the whisper-quiet spinner wheels to the tear-resistant material and sturdy buckles.

In addition to rolling luggage, Travelpro has options for underseat bags (rolling and not), toiletry bags, backpacks, foldable duffels, garment bags (which often come included with a carry-on), luggage tags, laptop bags, and more.

samsonite business travel bag

Shop all luggage at Monos

Monos is a newer start-up that doesn't have as many suitcase options as the other luggage brands on our list, but it's worth mentioning since it's one of the best suitcases on the market with a hard front pocket that gives you an easy place to safely store laptops and extras. Monos suitcases are durable, come in an array of colors, and are well-priced. Plus, all of the luggage comes with a 100-day trial period and a limited lifetime warranty. The same brand also makes some of our favorite durable packing cubes .

Currently, Monos has two sizes of carry-on that either come with a front pocket or not depending on your preferences, plus a medium-sized roller bag and a checked luggage option. Monos also make a backpack, duffel, and folio kit.

Shop all luggage at American Tourister

Many of American Tourister's carry-ons start under $100, and while they may not last you a lifetime, they certainly won't break down anytime soon either. The hard-sided bags are made from a sturdy ABS material, and the spinner wheels aren't quite as high-end as premium options but still easily roll on most surfaces. While these suitcases don't come with tons of extras (be aware that some don't come with built-in TSA locks), the interiors are still thoughtfully designed for easy packing.

American Tourister has numerous roller bag options in varying sizes, including both hard-sided and soft-sided suitcases. There is also a line of Disney luggage that kids especially might love. While there are also some nice wheeled underseat bags, American Tourister hasn't branched out much from classic roller bags, so you'll want to look elsewhere if a duffel or weekender bag is more your aim.

samsonite business travel bag

Shop all luggage at Rimowa

When it comes to high-end luggage, Rimowa is a consistent standout that uses premium materials to create long-lasting and recognizable pieces. Its ribbed aluminum luggage, which comes in every color from simple silver to a cherry red, is particularly popular — though it will cost you upwards of $1,000. However, thanks to heavy-duty construction that still manages to be lightweight, the rollers might be worth it if budget isn't an issue for you.

For a slightly more cost-effective (though still pricey) option, I particularly love the Essential Lite collection, which I named the best high-end hard-side carry-on thanks to the fact that it's incredibly durable but weighs less than five pounds. Unfortunately, if you're a fan of soft-sided suitcases, Rimowa is not the brand for you, and there aren't as many accessories available as some other brands.

Read our full Rimowa Essential Lite carry-on review .

samsonite business travel bag

Shop all luggage at Briggs & Riley

We named Briggs & Riley our top pick for the best high-end soft-side carry-on. I particularly like the super-smart interior features that truly elevate these suitcases, from a special CX compression-expansion system that increases packing capacity by 25%, to making sure the adjustable handle is entirely on the outside of the bag so no packing room is lost to the poles. These suitcases are certainly investment pieces, but they're built to last and also come with a lifetime warranty.

While I find the soft-sided bags to be some of Briggs & Riley's best options, there are also some nice hard-sided carry-ons and checked bags for those who prefer to go that route. In addition to roller bags, Briggs & Riley also makes backpacks, duffels, weekends, laptop bags, and travel accessories of all types, including packing cubes, bag ID tags, laundry bags, and more.

samsonite business travel bag

Shop all luggage at Bric's

Bric's is probably best known for its high-end Bellagio collection of luggage, both recognizable and revered for its durable, but ultra-light polycarbonate exterior with leather trim that gives it a nostalgic trunk feel. It's the little details that set this Italian brand apart, including Hinomoto wheels, matching interior linings, and premium zippers. That's why you've likely seen a luxury travel guru wheeling this bag through the airport, or, if you're an eagle-eyed "Schitt's Creek" fan, may have caught Alexis Rose using this collection to pack up her belongings.

However, for those not ready to spend $600 on a carry-on, Bric's also has several more affordable suitcases in both hard-sided and soft-sided options. The Capri collection features striking exterior detailing in a wide range of colors at a mid-tier price point, while B/Y Zeus will appear to soft-sided fans.

The brand also has a sale section where you can sometimes score premium collections that typically start at $650 or more for under $200.

samsonite business travel bag

Shop all luggage at Tumi

Like Rimowa, Tumi luggage pieces are an investment. But they're a worthy one since these suitcases will likely last you years, if not decades. With numerous options of all sizes for both hard-sided and soft-sided suitcases, Tumi has bags to suit just about all tastes.

Its well-thought-out suitcases include premium spinner wheels, heavy-duty zippers, scratch- and tear-resistant exteriors, and well-designed interiors that help travelers maximize every last inch of space. In addition to roller luggage, Tumi is also well known for its premium totes and briefcases, and also makes travel wallets, backpacks, duffels, care kits, travel umbrellas, and more.

samsonite business travel bag

Shop all luggage at Victorinox

Victorinox luggage falls in the mid- to high-tier of pricing but its durability makes it a good value choice. The brand also frequently has luggage on sale during big shopping holidays when you can score suitcases for less. As you might expect from a Swiss Army company, the interiors of most suitcases are also thoughtfully designed to maximize packing space.

Victorinox offers both hard-sided and soft-sided roller bags of numerous sizes including classic carry-ons, checked bags, medium-sized suitcases, and smaller wheeled underseat bags that can fit laptops and accessories. Beyond roller bags, Victorinox also offers briefcases, duffels, backpacks, totes, toiletry kits, garment bags, and more.

samsonite business travel bag

Shop all luggage at Delsey

If you like the look of Bric's cream suitcases with leather trim, you may also want to consider Delsey's Chatelet line of hard-sided luggage. While these suitcases start around the same price as Bric's, they can be found on sale more frequently, often for half the price. Delsey's Titanium suitcases are also a fan-favorite option since they are ultra-lightweight but incredibly durable.

Delsey has numerous options for roller bags for domestic and international travel in both hard-sided and soft-sided variations (though more hard-sided), as well as several luggage sets. It even has an eco-friendly line of laptop bags and duffels using recycled materials.

samsonite business travel bag

Is hard-sided or soft-sided luggage better?

There are pros and cons to each. In general, hard-sided luggage offers more protection for your belongings than soft-sided luggage.

For checked bags, you're best bet is hard-sided luggage, since it can withstand tough handling and having other items stacked on top. Soft-sided luggage may be a good option if you want more flexibility, since fabric-made suitcases have a lot more give. Soft-sided pieces are a good option for carry-ons because they can flex and compress to fit into tight overhead bins.

What size luggage should I buy?

We think it's best to start with a carry-on size, since it offers the most flexibility, whether you want to keep it in the cabin or check it. Most US airlines cap carry-on size at 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches high, including handles and wheels.

When it comes to buying a checked bag, you'll want something between 25 and 29 inches long. Airlines typically charge a fixed fee for checked bags up to a certain weight, so it may be tempting to think a bigger suitcase is always better. However, bigger pieces of luggage come with more weight of their own, don't protect your items well when they're underpacked, and encourage overpacking, which can lead to higher baggage fees (or the dreaded airport floor repacking).

When we think of Samsonite, we think of reliable and durable luggage that won’t break the bank. The company dominates the mid-range luggage market, offering hardside and softside luggage in a variety of materials and designs, as well as offering backpacks, handbags, and accessories.

Samsonite has been broadening its market share by acquiring the likes of Tumi , Hartmann , and Gregory Mountain Products . However, it still produces great value, mid-range luggage like the Pro Travel Softside collection we’re reviewing today.

Samsonite’s Pro Travel Softside collection consists of durable and functional luggage designed with business travelers in mind . Although fairly understated in its external appearance, the interior is where this luggage range really shines .

Whether you’re looking for checked luggage with clever packing solutions, such as a trifold suiter or wet pocket , or a carry-on that will protect your travel tech, the Pro Travel Softside range will have you covered.

For this review, we looked at the carry-on version of the Samsonite Pro Travel collection that opens vertically. It’s a clever little mobile office for those needing space for their laptop, tablet, work files, cables, etc., while providing ample space for a few days of clothing .

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Overall Rating

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Style and Look

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Style

Whether rolling it into the office or a hotel for a weekend away, this versatile case has a timeless design to suit any occasion .

It’s unlikely that the Samsonite Pro Travel Softside will win any awards for its aesthetics, but we’re fairly sure that this case will look as smart and sleek in 2 years as it does now. Its black nylon exterior and leather trims will resist any scuffs, and the extensive storage options make this one of our favorite carry-ons yet .

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Size and Compartments

Weighing 8.7 pounds, it’s on the heavy side for a carry-on , but it’s not surprising considering the case has so many clever features and packing compartments. Some airlines don’t have a weight restriction for carry-on items, so the deciding factor may be whether you’re happy to cart around the extra weight.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Weight

Measuring 21.8 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches, including its handles and wheels , this case’s carry-on version slightly exceeds the size requirements for some domestic U.S. and international airlines. Be sure to check the carry-on size requirements of your specific airline before flying, and of course, every airline is different in how strictly it enforces its size restrictions.

The exterior pockets are where this carry-on truly excels , with Samsonite really considering what you need when working remotely. The smallest pocket at the front has a USB port for charging your cell phone, and behind that is a larger pocket with a Velcro strap to attach your power bank.

Within the large pocket are several pen and credit card holders and a small RFID-blocking sleeve . There’s also a zippered pocket and a soft compartment to store a tablet safely.

A small pocket at the top of the bag keeps your wallet or passport within easy reach.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Exterior Pockets

As this bag is all about organizing your tech, it also comes with a pouch to organize your cables that you can clip inside the bag for safekeeping.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Cable Organizer

This clever carry-on has 2 compartments in the main body of the bag . There’s a large tech compartment accessible from the front side that has a padded pocket to fit up to a 15.6-inch laptop . This compartment also has plenty of room for files, notebooks, or other large items.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Exterior Laptop Compartment

The large rear main compartment is for your clothing and personal items . It opens like a clamshell and has bracing straps to stop the tech compartment from falling open onto the floor, potentially damaging anything inside.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Interior Compartments

X-shaped compression straps will hold your clothes neatly in place, and the 3 mesh pockets in the lid are great for stashing smaller items you don’t want rolling around in transit.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Interior Pockets

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside USB Charging Port

The smallest pocket at the front of the bag has a USB port for charging your cell phone on the go . Simply slip your own power bank into the Velcro strap within the larger pocket and attach the built-in cable. Be aware that the case doesn’t come with a power bank, so you’ll need to purchase one separately.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside USB Charging Port

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Durability and Materials

This soft side carry-on is made from strong ballistic nylon , and the leather accents on the pockets and handle add a touch of sophistication.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Material

The water-resistant nylon weave will reasonably protect your belongings but is not fully waterproof. The material feels incredibly durable and is resistant to abrasion , so you can be confident that you’ll have a smart-looking case for years to come.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Wheels

The 360-degree Split Sphere DLX wheels provide excellent glide and maneuverability on a variety of surfaces. While the wheels are not recessed for protection, they are semi-enclosed with guards on either side to protect them from knocks.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Wheels

Whether rolling on a smooth airport tarmac or uneven surfaces outdoors, these wheels will stand the test of time. They were quiet and smooth rolling; however, we did find that they didn’t respond as well when turning sharply.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Smooth Rolling

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Handles

When it comes to lifting this case, there’s only 1 standard carry handle on the top, and we feel a side handle would be useful considering the weight of the case. On the positive side, the leather carry handle is soft and comfortable to use.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside handles

Although not a proper handle, there is a sleeve handle on the bottom of the bag to aid in lifting it in and out of the overhead compartment.

The telescoping handle is adjustable to 9 different heights using the button on the handle. It’s pretty smooth to operate and is sturdy, even at the higher settings.

Retracting back inside the case under the interior lining, the handle takes up a small amount of the packing space inside the clothing compartment.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Telescopic Handle

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Zips

With this case being purpose-built to carry your expensive tech, we were disappointed to discover no integrated TSA lock on the bag or even interlacing zippers to attach your padlock securely. This feels like an oversight, considering Samsonite made an effort to include an RFID pocket with security in mind.

The zips themselves are smooth running and feel heavy-duty to deter thieves, and the zipper pulls are quite small and don’t jangle around noisily.

Samsonite Pro Travel Softside Zippers

Warranty and Customer Service

The Samsonite Pro Travel Softside collection comes with a limited 3-year warranty that is useful if you encounter any manufacturing defects where the case has failed when it shouldn’t. Although Samsonite’s warranty states that it doesn’t cover damage caused by airlines, it’s always worth trying to see if it can be repaired at your local warranty center.

The Samsonite Pro Travel Softside collection also includes a traditional carry-on , 25-inch medium , and 29-inch large checked suitcase . These cases open as a standard suitcase and the checked luggage comes with a trifold suiter and a wet pocket for toiletries or damp clothing.

With Samsonite’s 100+ years of experience crafting luggage, the brand often balances durability, packability, and affordability.

The carry-on version of the Samsonite Pro Travel has some incredibly useful packing options if you regularly travel with your laptop, tablet, or other devices. With almost half the case dedicated to your mobile office, it won’t be as useful to those who don’t utilize these compartments.

We were disappointed by the lack of an integrated TSA lock on this case or interlacing zippers, but you could use a thin padlock through the ends of the zipper pulls.

Investing in quality luggage can make packing for a trip more organized and allow you to maneuver seamlessly through the terminal, onto the aircraft and at your final destination.

But with so many luggage brands and models to choose from, deciding on the right type of luggage for your traveling style can take time and effort. Learning more about the different luggage brands on the market is a great place to start.

Two brands — Travelpro and Samsonite — are common options among travelers. Whether you’re going on vacation or a business trip, here’s how Travelpro versus Samsonite compare.

About Samsonite and Travelpro

Samsonite has been around since 1910 and is one of the older luggage brands in the industry. Travelpro is a relatively younger brand founded in the late 1980s and is known for its impact on the way people travel today.

Travelpro’s founder, Bob Plath, invented the first vertical Rollaboard luggage bag with a retractable handle that made carrying baggage easier for airline crew and passengers to manage.

Today, Travelpro and Samsonite both offer various products. The distinctions range from luggage size (e.g., carry-on versus checked luggage) to hard-sided versus soft-sided, and more.

Samsonite vs. Travelpro comparison

For simplicity, this overview offers a side-by-side comparison of a product that offers the following features:

Correct carry-on size.

Hardshell exterior.

Spinner wheels.

Retails under $200.

The products that meet this description are Samsonite’s Freeform Carry-On Spinner and Travelpro’s Maxlite Air Carry-On Hardside Spinner . Here’s how they compare.

» Learn more: Checked bag vs. carry-on

The Freeform and Maxlite Air options both have smooth gliding wheels that turn at a 360-degree rotation. They also have built-in, three-digit TSA combination locks so airport security can open and lock your luggage again.

Both also have dual-sided interior organization with an extra zippered compartment. However, instead of the cross-ribbon buckle in the Samsonite Freeform, the Maxite Air uses a zippered mesh to keep your things in place.

Samsonite’s Freeform expands up to 1 inch using a zipper feature, while the Maxlite Air can expand up to 2 inches.

You can expect multiyear limited warranties from Samsonite and Travelpro. Travelpro luggage, however, has an extra edge in this category.

Depending on the product, Samsonite products offer the original purchaser or gift recipient a three-, five-, or 10-year global warranty from the date of purchase. The warranty for Samsonite’s Freeform Carry-On is 10 years.

This warranty only covers manufacturing defects in the craftsmanship or materials; it doesn’t apply to accidents and other misuse. At the company’s discretion, it offers a repair or replacement of defective items.

Conversely, Travelpro provides a limited lifetime warranty for its Maxlite Air Carry-on. However, depending on the product, the warranty may cover defects in build quality and materials for the luggage’s wheels, zippers, extensions and carrying handles. Like Samsonite, it offers to fix or replace items at its own discretion.

In terms of retail pricing, both Travelpro and Samsonite intentionally fell under $200 for illustrative purposes. However, the Samsonite luggage price is slightly higher at $199.99 retail, not including tax and fees. Travelpro retails for $169.99 plus taxes and fees.

As of writing, both sites offered a promotion that reduced the base price further. Based on the sale price, Samsonite’s Freeform Spinner was the more affordable of the two.

Since promotions change, shop around for discounts and sales.

How to choose between Travelpro vs. Samsonite luggage

Although the two luggage competitors might seem similar, Travelpro and Samsonite products have subtle differences.

When choosing between Travelpro or Samsonite, consider your packing needs and preferences and your travel style.

For example, my leisure and business trips are four to seven days long, on average, and generally, I don’t over-pack more than an extra shirt and a pair of socks. Since I’m often a solo traveler , I also prefer a compact option that I can easily haul through the terminals, into overhead aircraft compartments, and onto shuttles or Ubers.

Based on my travel habits, I’ve used a Samsonite hardshell 22-inch carry-on Omni PC Spinner carry-on as my primary luggage. It fits essential clothing, toiletries and other personal items for my trips without using its expandable zipper feature.

It’s a reliable workhorse that I’ve taken along on my travels since 2017 and has held up impressively. There are no dents or cracks on the shell and no signs of noticeable wear from a reasonable distance. The wheels and retractable handle also move as smoothly as when I first got them.

However, its lower price point compared with other Travelpro or Samsonite luggage options means there are some compromises. For example, it has minimal interior pockets compared with other models and doesn’t have a side handle which can be inconvenient. Additionally, when at full expanded capacity, it has a tendency to catch and topple on the carpet.

To help you choose between Samsonite versus Travelpro, ask yourself these questions:

What’s your budget?

What special features are nonnegotiable (e.g., built-in USB charger)?

On average, how long are your trips?

How many items do you prefer to bring with you?

Narrowing down your needs and preferences can help you determine the type of bag that’s right for you — and chances are, Travelpro or Samsonite (or both) will have an option.

The bottom line

If you’re looking for a go-to, middle-tier luggage brand that offers a range of products, Travelpro and Samsonite are both great places to start.

If you're interested in a more affordable option (excluding a sale) without compromising features, more room for expansion and a longer warranty, Travelpro may be for you. If you like a cross-ribbon buckle for organizational purposes, don't need extra expansion and can hold off for a good sale, consider Samsonite.

When shopping around, be sure to check for available retailer sales or credit card promotions so you get the best value for your purchase.

Travelpro is a midtier luggage brand that’s best known for its founder, Bob Plath, who invented the two-wheeled, upright Rollaboard luggage design with a retractable handle. It’s been in business since the late 1980s and continues to be a popular luggage brand for travelers.

Whether Travelpro is better than Samsonite depends on the model and features you’re looking for. The two brands offer entry-level luggage options that are very similar in their features and workmanship, but the difference might be more stark with their pricier models.

Samsonite is a midtier brand that was founded in 1910. It offers products at various price points, and depending on your budget and the model you choose, it might be considered a moderately spendy option.

Depending on the model, Samsonite offers various tiers of limited global warranty. Its products offer a three-, five-, or 10-year global warranty that protects against manufacturing defects in the craftsmanship or materials, and the company will repair or replace defective items at its discretion. Its warranty doesn’t protect against misuse.
