Journey's Neal Schon says he and Steve Perry are 'in a good place' before band's 50th anniversary

On the cusp of turning 50, the band that etched “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” and “Faithfully” into lighters-up lore is entering “a cleaned-up chapter of Journey.”

That’s according to Neal Schon, the band’s ace guitarist, lone original constant and de facto CEO.

Despite decades of fluctuating lineups and  snarly lawsuits among band members , Journey endures.

On July 8, the band released “Freedom,” its first new album in 11 years that also presents the return of Randy Jackson (as in "American Idol") on bass. The 15-song collection is steeped with vintage-sounding ballads (“Still Believe in Love,” “Live to Love Again”) and soaring melodic rockers (“United We Stand,” “You Got the Best of Me”).

Journey – including longtime keyboardist Jonathan Cain,  peppy singer Arnel Pineda , drummer Deen Castronovo and keyboardist Jason Derlatka, adding bassist Todd Jensen for live shows – will hit Resorts World Las Vegas  this month for shows backed by a symphony orchestra before rolling through more arena dates this summer and in early 2023, the band’s official 50th year.

Regular road warriors who consistently pack arenas and stadiums – their 27 shows this year grossed $28 million, according to Billboard Boxscore – Journey relies on a solid catalog of mega-hits and a devoted fan base that appreciates the familiarity.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers also received a boost from Netflix’s ’80s-centered “Stranger Things” when the show used “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” in the trailer for the just-ended season, launching the song onto Billboard’s Rock Digital Songs chart. The affable Schon, 68, talked with USA TODAY about the band’s complicated legacy, his relationship with former frontman Steve Perry and plans for Journey's golden anniversary.

Question: Are you amazed at how the Journey train keeps rolling after almost 50 years?

Neal Schon: It’s quite an accomplishment and I’m very proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve gotten through emotional and personnel changes and survived. It’s pretty mind-boggling but also a lot of hard work.

Q: Does the title “Freedom” refer to anything specifically?

Schon: Our ex-manager Herbie Herbert  wanted to call the (1986) “Raised on Radio” album “Freedom” because he always came up with these one-word titles. Steve (Perry) fought him on that and got his way, so we sat on it for many years. When we got through the lawsuit with the ex-bandmates, we made the new LLC Freedom (JN) and when we were tossing around album titles said, why not just call the whole thing “Freedom?" It's for the times right now.

Q: There’s been a bit of a revolving door in the rhythm section. Deen Castronovo is back for the live shows, but Narada Michael Walden played drums on the album, and Randy Jackson is back in the band, at least on record?

Schon: Deen is singing and playing his butt off. He’s such a musical sponge, this guy. He’s been like my little brother for close to three decades and is such a joy to work with. Randy, he’d been working with me diligently this whole time. He’s so many things beyond being an amazing musician and bass player.

Q: Will Randy play at any of the upcoming live shows or is Todd Jensen handling those duties?

Schon: Randy is still recovering from some surgery and he stays very busy and Todd fits like a glove. Having said that, I think with our 50th anniversary next year, there’s room for everybody to jump in if they want to participate. We did go through an ugly divorce with (Steve Smith and Ross Valory) with the court proceedings (in 2021, Schon and Cain settled a $10 million trademark lawsuit with the band’s former drummer and bassist). But definitely, if Steve Perry wanted to come on and sing a song, yes. If (original Journey singer) Gregg Rolie wanted to come sing a couple of songs, yes. Randy Jackson (can) come sit in on some of the material – he played on a lot of hits on “Raised on Radio.”

Q: Do you talk much with Steve Perry?

Schon: We are in contact. It’s not about him coming out with us, but we’re speaking on different levels. That’s a start, even if it’s all business. And I’m not having to go through his attorney! We’ve been texting and emailing. He’s a real private guy and he wants to keep it that way. We’re in a good place.

Q: Do you think, after 15 years, that people have accepted Arnel?

Schon: I was diligent in that I wanted to show the massive size of our audience, so I hired photogs to come out every show and shoot the audience and show the size of the crowd to make everybody see, what am I missing? From putting up the different photos every night and the reviews from the fans online, I saw very little of “This is not Journey, man.” I think we just shut everybody up.

Journey’s self-titled debut album was released in April 1975 and was the band’s first outing into the musical world. At the time, Journey was yet to adopt the arena rock sound that they would later become famous for. Instead, the album exhibited strong influences of jazz fusion and progressive rock, with extensive instrumental solos and complex musical arrangements.

Notable tracks include “Of a Lifetime” and “Mystery Mountain,” which offered a glimpse into the technical proficiency and artistic aspirations of the band. Though the album didn’t achieve significant commercial success, it laid the groundwork for what the band could accomplish. The album featured Neal Schon on guitars, Ross Valory on bass, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, Aynsley Dunbar on drums, and George Tickner on rhythm guitar. Look into the Future

Released: January 1976

Released just a year after their debut, “Look into the Future” was Journey’s second studio album. The band continued in a similar vein, leaning heavily towards progressive rock with intricate instrumental arrangements. The title track and “On a Saturday Nite” are often cited as highlights. However, the album failed to bring substantial commercial success, although it was a step forward in terms of songwriting and complexity. Neal Schon on guitars, Ross Valory on bass, and Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals returned for this album, with Aynsley Dunbar continuing to provide the drum work. The album was produced by Glen Kolotkin and was recorded at CBS Studios in San Francisco during late 1975.

Released: February 1977

“Next,” Journey’s third studio album, represents the end of an era for the band in terms of their experimentation with progressive rock and jazz fusion. Songs like “Spaceman” and “Hustler” continue to echo their earlier styles but also hint at the more commercial sound the band would later adopt. While not commercially successful upon its release, it gained some retrospective recognition for marking a transitional phase for the band. As with the previous albums, the lineup featured Neal Schon on guitars, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, Ross Valory on bass, and Aynsley Dunbar on drums. “Dream, After Dream,” an often-overlooked album in the Journey discography, served as a soundtrack for the Japanese film of the same name. Journey’s “Revelation” marked a pivotal point in the band’s long and storied career, primarily because it was their second album with Arnel Pineda on lead vocals. Produced by Kevin Shirley, “Revelation” was recorded at The Plant Studios in Sausalito, California, and Avatar Studios in New York.

The album is a triple-disc set. The first disc features 11 new songs, while the second contains 11 re-recorded classics featuring Pineda’s vocals, allowing both old and new fans to experience Journey’s classics in a new light. The third disc is a DVD of a live concert.

The album captures Journey’s classic rock sound, while also infusing new energy. Hits like “Never Walk Away” and “After All These Years” became fan favorites and enjoyed radio airplay. The album went on to receive platinum certification and peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The concert was recorded and filmed at The Summit in Houston, Texas on November 6, 1981, during the band’s tour for their then-newly released “Escape” album, which had been released in July of that year. “Escape & Frontiers Live in Japan” was released on April 3, 2019, and captures Journey’s performance at the Budokan in Tokyo on February 7, 2017. This special live performance was a unique set where Journey played their “Escape” and “Frontiers” albums back-to-back in their entirety.

The lineup for this recording featured Arnel Pineda on lead vocals, Neal Schon on lead guitar, Ross Valory on bass, Jonathan Cain on keyboards, and Steve Smith on drums. The album was produced by Journey and was released through Eagle Vision.

Formed in San Francisco in 1973 by former members of Santana, Steve Miller Band, and Frumious Bandersnatch. Journey had their biggest commercial success between 1978 and 1987, when Steve Perry was lead vocalist; they released a series of hit songs, including “Don’t Stop Believin'” (1981). The epitome of all that is big, bold, and exhilarating about arena rock of the ‘70s and ‘80s, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” feels both iconic and indestructible. Journey enjoyed a successful reunion in the mid-1990s and have since regrouped twice; first with Steve Augeri from 1998 to 2006, then with Arnel Pineda from 2007 to the present. Originally a progressive rock band, Journey was described by AllMusic as having cemented a reputation as “one of America’s most beloved (and sometimes hated) commercial rock/pop bands” by 1978, when they redefined their sound by embracing pop arrangements on their fourth album, Infinity. Journey Frontman Arnel Pineda on the Band’s New Record, Dreams of a Steve Perry Reunion

In early 2020, Journey frontman Arnel Pineda flew back to his native Manila after playing a corporate gig in Texas. He was gearing up for a big year in which Journey would cut their first new record since 2011’s Eclipse and play amphitheaters all over North America with the Pretenders.

The pandemic changed all that and he’s been in Manila ever since, but Journey still found a way to work remotely on the record. It’s their first full-length since parting ways with drummer Steve Smith and bassist Ross Valory. They were replaced by bassist Randy Jackson (who briefly toured and recorded with Journey in 1986–87) and drummer Narada Michael Walden, who’s doubling as the album’s producer.

We checked in with Pineda via Zoom to talk about his lockdown life in Manila, the in-progress Journey record, the upcoming biopic about his life, and why he still dreams about a Journey reunion with Steve Perry.

How are things going? Good. I arrived here in Manila last year just a week and a half before the lockdown began. I was lucky. Otherwise, I would have been stuck in America for six months before they let me back.

This must be the longest stretch of time you’ve been home since you joined Journey in 2007. Yeah. This is the longest. I like it because I got to spend a lot of time with family and the kids and more time with myself and my wife. There are other things I would rather do than tour, so I got the chance to be here. In a negative way, it’s quite bad. The survival here is a day-to-day deal. I’m the one that goes out a lot. I’m the one that goes to the market and the grocery to refill our food stocks.

You wonder if you have the virus every day. There’s a lot of paranoia going around. It’s like what is happening in America.

Do you miss playing live? Yeah. I especially miss the energy and the adrenaline of doing it. I’m delivering on the legacy that the Voice [Steve Perry] has left behind. Especially now that he formally passed the torch to me in 2017 [at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction], he made that known and he was very gracious. It was very kind of him. It was so generous of him to say that in public. It was really an honor.

What was it like to finally meet Steve after all these years? I posted on Instagram that I had waited 35 years for that. It was dreamy. I couldn’t believe I met him since he’s very reclusive and he avoids people. He didn’t want to get interviewed, at least until he released his new record [ Traces ] and then suddenly he was out there, going to radio stations and accepting interviews.

I was really surprised that he agreed to meet me. It’s one of the most special things that happened in my life. He’s one of my heroes when it comes to singing. I remember back in the Eighties, I would sleep on the bus with my Walkman on in my ears as his voice sang all these favorite songs from Journey.

I really dug his new record. It was amazing. I’ve been teasing Jonathan [Cain] and Neal [Schon]. “Why don’t you invite Steve Perry over for a tour?” Oh, my God. I never saw them back in the Eighties. I was just a young kid in Manila, just playing around, with no chance of going to the States and seeing their show, but they were one of my favorite bands.

I’ve spoken to Steve a bunch of times in the past few years. We even talked just a few weeks ago. Oh, my God!

Judging by our talks, I’m extremely confident that he’s happy to leave the Journey baton with you. That’s even more pressure I’m getting, hearing this from you. At the same time, I’m truly honored. But I’m not losing [the hope] that one day he’ll join the band for two or three songs. It would be one of the highlights of my life if that happens.

It would almost be on the scale of Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd re-forming at this point. My God. It would be the same thing for me with Led Zeppelin because I haven’t seen them either, or Pink Floyd. I wish they would be complete again. It’s like completing a circle, being back up onstage again.

Do you think this long break has been good for your singing voice? Has it given you time to rest the muscle? I think so. At the same time, I can’t help but sing four or five songs here every day. The problem with the voice is that it changes as you grow older. It’s like athletes. They reach their peak on their 30th birthday. As they approach 31 or 32, it starts to change. It’s the same with my voice. I just want to make sure I can be of use to the band until they decide to throw the towel in.

Those are hard songs to sing for any singer. You guys go out and do 60 straight concerts in the summer and you need to hit the high notes on “Faithfully” every single time. That would be hard for anyone at any age. We’ll do five or six shows a week. I’m just quite amazed with myself a little. Somehow I was able to take it for 13 years. Let’s see what’s going to happen in the coming days. We’re on to finishing the album. We finished six songs so far. There’s talk of going out somewhere first, maybe Las Vegas for a residency. We don’t know yet. We haven’t decided. Just to break the ice between the new members and us.

You have six songs totally done? Yeah. And maybe seven songs to go.

Steve Perry Signs to New Label, Contemplates Solo Tour: 'I Miss It Terribly'

Are these ballads? Rockers? For now, we’re doing the rocker songs first, not the ballads. I think the seven songs they’re working on, they’re working on something huge, like how you’ve known Journey doing ballads. It’s between [1981’s ] “Mother, Father” and [1978’s] “Winds of March.” We’re working on that song. We’ll see what happens. I’m waiting for them to send me the demos so that we can record it next week.

Working remotely like this must have been an adjustment. Normally, you’d be in the room together. I know. It’s quite hard right now. I have a few melody ideas that I’m into and want to share with them, but you can’t right now because of what is happening. I just have to listen to it and learn it. We use Zoom to record and I turn on my laptop and go into Logic Pro. They get ahold of it. If there’s something I want to change, I tell them. But it’s all pretty much done and I just record with them.

Are you doing the vocals on your laptop? Yeah. I’ll show you [ turns camera around and shows a microphone plugged into a computer in front of soundproofing foam ]. I share my computer, like mirroring. They can see what’s happening in my laptop. It allows them to hack it for a moment and then they can hear it. It happens in real time.

There’s no lag. I can hear that right now while we talk. It’s like you’re in the next room and you’re actually more than 8,000 miles away. Yeah. Thank God for the technology.

Do you think the album will come out this year? I think so. Neal thinks so. He can’t wait to release it before we do a full-on tour.

How do things sound different now that Randy Jackson and Narada Michael Walden are in the band? It’s somewhat like the sound back in the Eighties when Randy Jackson joined the band for the Raised on Radio album. It’s kind of like that, but it’s also more updated. Narada is producing my vocals and mentoring me on how to do it. He’s telling me to sing it this way and that way. It’s amazing. I’m learning a lot from Narada. It’s truly an honor and I appreciate him for doing so. It’s amazing.

Has the band even been in the same room yet? Have you met Randy and Narada in person? Right now, it’s just been virtual. It’s tough. I wanted to do it. I keep telling Neal, “If only I had been there, we would have done this in two months. Sorry it’s taking so long.” But with all these health protocols where you need to quarantine for two weeks, and then I come back and I’d be quarantined for another two weeks before I can join my family. It’s too much of a hassle, so we decided to do it this way even though Neal isn’t too happy about it. He wants it the old, classic way of making an album.

Moving on here, what’s the status of the movie about your life? It’s going to happen. I think they’re gonna start. Some people from Warner will start coming here. I think maybe with [ Crazy Rich Asians director] Jon Chu and [ Joker and The Fighter screenwriter] Scott Silver. They might come here to audition actors and actresses that will take part in my biopic.

Are you going to take them around town and show them the places you grew up? Yes. That’s the deal, of course. I want to show them where I grew up, where I was born, where everything happened before this whole magical thing.

Do you think the story will start in your childhood and show all your early bands and struggles and focus on the pre-Journey period? I think so, yeah. That’s the plan. I’ve spoken many times with Scott Silver. What’s interesting about my story is that I’ve survived two coup attempts here in the Philippines before I went to Hong Kong for 10 years. I don’t know he if plans to tell what happened to me in Hong Kong, but I had 10 years there. He might focus on my love story with my wife now.

I can see the grand finale in my head. It’ll be you walking onstage in Chile at your first Journey show. You’re nervous and they push you out and you burst into “Separate Ways.” Yeah. I was trying to back out five minutes before. I was like, “Neal, I cannot do this. This is not built for me.” They were like, “No. It’s too late. Get out there and do it.”

It was the turning point of your life. Everything is either before that moment or after that moment. You should tell Scott Silver about this idea. I’ve been implying it to him that we should end everything in Chile. And I remember when my wife decided to join me on tour in 2011. We were playing to a 30,000 crowd that night. I was telling my wife, “Remember Hard Rock Cafe when there were only three tables? Now it’s 30,000 people.” It was just unbelievable. It doesn’t get old to me. It’s still so surreal and bizarre.

I saw you at Citi Field with Fleetwood Mac and Madison Square Garden with Def Leppard. I could tell you were still having a blast. It’s still unbelievable. I’m just so blessed. I can’t thank them enough, especially Neal Schon. He was the one that was really sold that I am the one since 2007. But then again, I still think, “If only they could bring back Steve Perry.” You know what I mean?

I do, but if he came back, that would mean … I know, but I miss them so much together. Every now and then, I watch their videos together. It’s always them with Steve Perry that I watch. I mean, no offense to Adam Lambert. He’s an amazing performer and he has an amazing voice, but I still watch the old [Queen] ones with Freddie Mercury. That’s why when people say things like “No Perry, No Journey,” I understand it. Where I come from, we’re so influenced by Western music. We loved the originals, if you know what I mean.

His return would put you out of a job. That would be OK to me! I’m telling you. That’s how much I adore him and I adore Journey and how much I adore Steve Perry. Back in 2005, I resigned from my job in Hong Kong because I lost my voice due to acid reflux. I was telling my friends back then that my only regret was I lost my voice before I had the chance to sing side-by-side with Steve Perry. I was joking with them, but then a different situation happened. I just wish that one show with him … it would change my life forever. It’s been 30 years now and the band keeps changing my life in ways nobody would ever guess would happen.

Do you miss Ross Valory and Steve Smith now that they’re out of the band? I do, of course. We had a real bond that nobody can deny. [ Sighs ] When the first day came that Steve Smith went back, I could feel that he was trying to feel everything out and observe. When he got the good vibe again, we clicked. Four years with him was very special. And 11 years with Ross was amazing. I cannot ask for anything more. Those friendships I’ll take with me until the end of time.

The group has dealt with a lot of tensions and feuds during your time with them, but you always remain neutral and out of the fray. How do you do that? I try to stay away. It’s like, “Oh, the big boys are fighting.” I’d rather stick to my guns, which is just singing and delivering the legacy with them onstage. When we’re up onstage, I think everyone forgets their differences behind the scenes. That’s my happy place. When they’re having some petty quarrels, I try to stay away. I talk to everybody without having to talk about their differences.

Your White House visit caused a bit of controversy. Do you have any regrets about going there and meeting Trump? I do not. As a Filipino, I am such a big fan of the White House. It’s not about Trump. It’s not about who the president is. It’s the whole history of the White House. I was just amazed. When I went there, I looked at all the pictures of past presidents and how old everything was. And then the table where President Trump was seated was about 100 years old. Who wouldn’t want to see that? Who wouldn’t want to touch that?

His presidential guard was laughing at me because President Trump was talking to the other members [of the band] and I was just mesmerized by the table. I was like, “Wow! This is truly 100 years old?” I’m just a kid from Manila and I was in the White House for the first time, so no regrets. I guess I didn’t even have a chance to apologize to Neal. He must understand. I’m just a kid from Manila that wants to see the White House, in general.

What’s the status of your next solo record? I’m doing it right now. I’m just waiting on a couple of friends that are helping me finish it from the States. Because of the recent banning of some countries from coming in here, we got delayed. I’m expecting them to arrive here at the end of March instead of the end of January. Even my online streaming concert was moved to April 18th. It was supposed to happen in February. To those who want to get a ticket, it’ll be at sanrestreaming.com .

Back to the movie, do you think being on set and watching someone play a younger version of you will be a surreal experience? It will be weird, but it’ll be weirder if I am there portraying myself! [ Laughs ] I will not be able to stand there and look at myself. I don’t really listen to myself singing either. When the documentary Everyman’s Journey came out, I could barely watch it. The premier was in Tribeca. I was like, “Do I really have to watch this and see myself on the big screen?” I was cringing.

Do you think the actor in the movie will actually sing, or will you provide the vocals? I think I’m going to use my voice. Do you remember the Queen movie [ Bohemian Rhapsody ]? Marc Martel did the voice. I think I’m going to do that too.

I can’t wait. Crazy Rich Asians is a great movie. Jon Chu really knows what he’s doing. It’s unbelievable that he took notice of my life and my story and wants to make a movie out of it. It really humbled me.

They should film it in Manila and not somewhere else. It should look authentic. They definitely will. There’s so much to remember, I’m telling you. At one point in my life, I was really on drugs. It quite affected my memory. I need to recover all those things that happened to me when I was young. But I’ve recovered a lot of my childhood memories. Scott Silver is quite happy with what I was able to tell him.

I’m very hopeful that before 2021 ends, you’ll be back onstage with Journey. Me too. I can’t wait to see those smiling faces and that rolling-thunder sound of the audience. It’s quite an adrenaline [rush] when you experience that every night. That’s what keeps you going.

Journey Albums Ranked Worst to Best

Journey has been through their share of incarnations over the past five decades – some of them respected but low-selling, some of them bestsellers who were critically ignored. To help guide you through those periods, we're counting down all of their studio albums from worst to best.

Through it all, guitarist and co-founder Neal Schon , the only member to have appeared on every Journey album, has soldiered on. He started Journey in the mid-'70s as a fusion-focused group alongside fellow Santana product Gregg Rolie , but it was only after Steve Perry joined that they began building a platinum-selling legacy. Then, Jonathan Cain came over from the Babys to replace Rolie on keyboards, and his pop smarts and composition skills helped launch Journey into superstar status in the early '80s.

But by the end of the decade, Perry, who established a parallel solo career with 1984's Street Talk , began an on-again, off-again relationship with the band – much to the chagrin of all the new fans Journey had made in the meantime. After their final late '90s split, Schon and Cain went through two other frontmen before settling on current singer Arnel Pineda . He has since helped Journey rebuild its commercial fortunes, keeping the band as a reliable draw on the road while leading them to two Top 15 releases along the way. But which one tops them all? Journey

Though it arrives amidst lawsuits , social media sniping and infighting, Journey is turning 50 this year.

During that half century, the group has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, logging 11 platinum-or-better albums (including Diamond certifications for 1981’s Escape and 1988’s Greatest Hits) , earning eight top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 and 25 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s also been a reliable ticket-selling act for most of its career, and in 2017, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Journey’s is the story of eras. When the group originally formed in San Francisco in 1973, original manager Herbie Herbert helped bring together guitarist Neal Schon and keyboard player/vocalist Gregg Rolie from Santana, bassist Ross Valory and rhythm guitarist George Tickner from Frumious Bandersnatch and drummer Prairie Prince from The Tubes. Prince would be replaced by David Bowie/Frank Zappa skins man Aynsley Dunbar, while Tickner would leave after Journey’s self-titled first album in 1975. The remaining quartet recorded two more albums before Steve Perry came on board for 1978’s Infinity, which began the band’s run of multi-platinum smashes — also marking the first appearance of Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse’s iconic scarab logo for the band. Dunbar was replaced by Steve Smith for 1979’s Evolution , and Rolie would leave in 1980 with Jonathan Cain of The Babys joining to help elevate the band to even greater fortunes on Escape and Frontiers .

The palette has been diverse, but there are common elements among Journey’s best songs — sturdy melodies and sing-along choruses, usually leading into one of Schon’s majestic guitar solos. But within that mold there’s also been plenty of invention and clever arrangements that have never been as formulaic as some of the band’s detractors (particularly during their early ‘80s heyday) would have you believe.

Journey has gone through its fair share of lineups, with singer Arnel Pineda on board since 2007 — the longest continuous tenure of any Journey frontman. The group released Freedom , it’s first new studio album in 11 years, in 2022, and despite the current legal fractures (which you can read about in detail here ), still they ride, as the Escape track says — and may they keep on runnin’ for a long time.

With all that in mind, here are our picks for Journey’s 10 best songs — not all of which come from the biggest hits.

"Someday Soon" ( Departure , 1980)

This album track from Rolie’s finally studio effort with the band is a hypnotic tone poem, with a ringing, cushy ambience and a hippie kind of optimism – not to mention the best give-and-take Perry and Rolie achieved during their time together in the band. It’s of course been eclipsed by Journey’s myriad hits (“Any Way You Want It” is the enduring top 40 Hot 100 hit from Departure ), but it’s a gem worthy of discovery.  Listen here.

"Escape" ( Escape , 1981)

The title track from Journey’s Billboard 200-topping studio album straddled the hard rock/pomp attack of the group’s mid-‘70s output with the melodic sensibility of the Perry-Cain axis. Its five-minute length provides room for the arrangement to stretch out and flow from one song part to the next, with a crunch that was part of Journey’s palette at the time. Listen here.

"Of a Lifetime" ( Journey , 1975)

The Journey of 1973-77 was certainly a different creature than the hitmaking colossus so many know and love. The group’s initial lineups flexed instrumental muscles, smoothly knitting together a number of styles more interested in the journey (ba- dum ) than any commercial destination. The first track from its first album is a prototype, leaning into blues, psychedelic rock and a touch of Latin, with the first of what would become many standout Schon solos, and a tuneful sturdiness delivered by Rolie’s soulful vocal. "Faithfully" (Frontiers , 1983)

The melody of this top 20 Hot 100 hit came to Cain in a dream on a tour bus, and his paean to the struggle between home and the road was written in a half-hour. The result was a swoon-inducing ballad tailor-made for a sea of lighters (back then) and cellphone flashlights (now), capturing one of Perry’s best recorded performances and one of Schon’s most inspired solos. One of its great side stories is that Prince contacted Cain after he wrote “Purple Rain,” concerned that it might be too similar to “Faithfully.” Cain determined it wasn’t, but joked to Billboard that, “After seeing what it became, I should have asked for a couple of points….”

"Ask the Lonely" (single, 1983)

Recorded for Frontiers , this one wound up in the romcom Two of a Kind (starring the Grease duo of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John) and rocked its way to No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Like “Only the Young,” which wound up in Vision Quest two years later, it showed that Journey was on roll – and well-suited for big soundtrack moments. Listen here.

"Who's Crying Now" ( Escape, 1981)

The best of Journey’s swoon songs — started by Perry while driving into Los Angeles and finished with Cain — has a subtlety and dynamic build that sets it apart from the many others of its ilk they’d create. The verse slips into the chorus with a soulful ease, and Schon’s guitar accents deftly build up to his searing solo at the end. The Escape single reached No. 4 on the Hot 100. Listen here.

"Feeling That Way" ( Infinity , 1978)

If fans at the time wondered how Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie would co-exist, this was the answer — an ebb-and-flow tradeoff that proved they could complement each other as lead singers as well as harmonize smoothly together (first evidenced by Infinity ‘s lead track “Lights”). Its medley-like pairing with the next track, “Anytime,” was gravy that would become a motif on the next few Journey albums. Listen here.

"Just the Same Way" ( Evolution , 1979)

Journey’s fifth album had a punchier sound than Infinity — though they shared producer Roy Thomas Baker — which worked to the benefit of the album’s first single. Led by Rolie’s piano and muscular lead vocal, with Perry responding on the choruses and bridge, it reached No. 58 on the Hot 100 in 1979. In a perfect world this would have been as big as anything from Escape or Frontiers, but it’s still a convincing introduction to the Rolie era of the band. Listen here.

"Don't Stop Believin'" ( Escape , 1981)

More than a billion Spotify streams, a Library of Congress National Recording Registry placement and plays at virtually every sporting event around the world don’t lie — this one is Journey’s pinnacle of success. Created during a rehearsal at the group’s warehouse HQ in Oakland, Calif., it gave us the “streetlight people” of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip and put the non-existent South Detroit on the map. And it saves the chorus for the song’s end, after the guitar solo. A cross-generational hit? Believe it, gleefully.

"Stone in Love" ( Escape , 1981)

Schon reportedly called this “Stoned in Love” when he wrote the riff, and it’s certainly an addictive track that’s the best roll-down-the-windows-and-crank-it-up Journey fix you could ask for — not to mention a frequent show opener. A No. 13 Mainstream Rock Airplay hit in 1981, the song is practically a deep cut today. But its anthemic chorus is a spirit-lifter and the dynamic breakdown that segues into the song-closing guitar solo harks back to the ambitious musicality of the first few albums. “Stone” is a gem that still shines bright. Steve Perry, the former lead singer for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band Journey, is teasing new music and a possible return to touring.

Perry served as Journey’s frontman from 1977 to 1987, and again from 1995 to 1998, but went on a 22-year recording hiatus before releasing solo album “Traces” in 2018.

Now, the 75-year-old Perry says he has additional projects in the works.

“I just signed with a new label,” Perry told Rolling Stone . “I’m very excited about it, and I’ll have an opportunity very soon to work with these very, very musically creative people. I’ll probably announce who I signed with very soon. That’s about as much as I can say, but I’m excited about that, and I am working on stuff.”

Perry also teased the possibility returning to touring, which he didn’t do following the release of “Traces,” which he said was because “Uncle Steve is up in age, and everybody at this age has some aches and pains and things like that.” Perry played his last full-length performance with Journey at the Sullivan Sports Arena in Anchorage, Alaska, on Feb. 1, 1987, and also toured as a solo act in the mid-1990s. He reunited with Journey for the band’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2017, but chose not to perform with the group at the ceremony.

“It’s something that I’m absolutely missing terribly,” Perry said of touring. “I can’t even tell you how much, but there’s been a big soulful reclaiming of this original feeling that I had about signing that I needed to get back to. I didn’t want to go out and just turn the wheel or turn the crank.

“I never say never at this point. My life has proven me just that,” he added.

Perry also noted that his desire to return to touring isn’t only for him, but in honor of his late father, as well.

“My father was a singer that never got a chance to realize his dreams, and I did,” he said. “I got to tell him years ago, before he passed, that I was doing this not just for me, but for him, too. This is the historical relevance to what I’m going through and rekindling, I think, about my and my voice and touring.”

Lenny Kravitz talks new album, NYC roots and more

L enny Kravitz always appears to exude confidence – whether he's on the red carpet, on stage holding a guitar or elsewhere. Many have described him as the epitome of cool.

But Kravitz doesn't feel burdened by other people's expectations.

"You're aware of the effect you have on people, or is this something you have to work at?" Gayle King asked Kravitz during a recent sitdown interview for "CBS Mornings."

"I don't work on it at all," the musician said. "And I don't think about it. But I am aware of people's reaction."

He spends most of his time focusing on making music. On Friday, the Grammy-winning artist is releasing his twelfth studio album, "Blue Electric Light."

Inspirations behind new album

Kravitz says the inspiration for the album struck during the COVID-19 pandemic when he was at his home in the Bahamas. "Some music needs to sit," Kravitz said, but this album poured out of him.

"I made about four albums while I was there. This is the one that I felt needed to come first. It felt very immediate. It felt like this was the beginning of the wave that I should be riding," Kravitz explained.

The solitude helped Kravitz dig deep and create something honest.

"I think just being in the middle of nature, being left alone, being quiet really opened a portal for me," he explained.

Overcoming insecurities

In his new song, "Human," Kravitz sings about embarking on a journey to live his truth.

"I think I was raised – not purposely, but to be a people pleaser. Where I put a lot of people's feelings before mine. Because I want to see folks happy. And that can be detrimental if you go overboard with that," Kravitz explained.

Kravitz said his daughter, Zoë Kravitz, who he shares with ex-wife and actor Lisa Bonet, has helped inspire him to start creating boundaries and learning how to say "no."

Though he's been in the music industry for more than three decades and appears confident, Kravitz said he still has insecurities.

"Sometimes I'm just not sure – necessarily sure what it is that I'm doing. For some reason, I'm still that 16-year-old kid trying to get the record deal," he said.

New York City roots

Kravitz thinks fondly of New York City , where he was born and raised. 

"I grew up being a New York kid. I took the subway at a young age – walking with your friends, taking cabs, you know? My mom taught me to be independent, you know?" he said.

He reflected on his mom, the late actress Roxie Roker, known for her role as Helen Willis on the popular CBS sitcom "The Jeffersons." He said the show's theme song still brings him joy.

"Every time I hear that song it…lifts me," said Kravitz, adding that it brings back memories of being a kid seeing his mom film the show.

Before moving to Los Angeles, Roker would send Kravitz to an after-school program at Harlem School of the Arts in Manhattan. He recently visited the school and showed King where he first learned to play guitar – a room he hadn't set foot in since he was around eight years old.

"It's a trip," Kravitz said.

"All I can do is really just feel how blessed," he added. "That and how beautiful the journey has been."

In many ways, Kravitz, who turns 60 on May 26, feels his journey is just getting started. He said he's never felt so young.

"I don't trip out on age," he said. "I don't understand the concept. And for me, look, you can be 30 years old and be destroyed, and you can be 90 years old and be young and vibrant."

The Meaning Behind “Stupid Love” by Lady Gaga and Why She Considers the Album ‘Chromatica’ the Start of Her Journey to Healing

Lady Gaga’s new concert film Gaga Chromatica Ball premieres on HBO and Max tonight (May 25). The special features her 2022 Dodger Stadium concert in support of her sixth album Chromatica .

Following pandemic-related delays, Gaga’s stadium tour began on July 17, 2022. The pop singer performed in front of 52,000 people in Los Angeles, and the show features her biggest hits, including “Bad Romance, “Poker Face,” “Shallow,” and “Just Dance.”

It also includes her No. 1 dance anthem, “Stupid Love.” To prepare for Gaga’s otherworldly visual stunner, here’s a look at how “Stupid Love” launched Chromatica into orbit.

Fighting for Love

“Stupid Love” is Lady Gaga’s electropop plea for affection. Beginning in 2018, she wrote music to heal from her mental health struggles and found catharsis through music and dance.

Her message is simple, though in a broken world, it’s one worth repeating. First, she had to open herself to receive love, setting aside shame and self-doubt.

Now it’s time to free me from the shame I gotta find that peace, is it too late? Or could this love protect me from the pain? I would battle for you (even if we break in two)

Striking a Pose on the Apple iPhone 11 Pro

Director Daniel Askill filmed the music video using only an Apple iPhone 11 Pro. He mounted several iPhones on drones and Steadicams to capture footage of Gaga and her dancers in a California desert. Askill filmed on location at Trona Pinnacles, California.

Gaga’s longtime collaborator, Richy Jackson, who helped create the dance moves of “Born This Way” and “Just Dance,” choreographed the video.

The space-age clip follows Gaga in the desert on the fictional planet Chromatica as tribes battle each other. Then, a truce is realized, and hostilities end with music and dance. Jackson incorporated voguing, the house dance Madonna brought from underground gay clubs in New York City to mainstream audiences in 1990. (To vogue, a dancer strikes poses like they are modeling for Vogue magazine.)  

Healing Through Dance

Chromatica , released in 2020, is a journey through house music history. To return to her dance roots, Gaga teamed with veteran electronic music producers.

“I think that the beginning of the album really symbolizes, for me, what I would call the beginning of my journey to healing, and what I would hope would be an inspiration for people that are in need of healing through happiness, through dance,” she told New Zealand radio DJ Zane Lowe.

Gaga’s producer Michael Tucker, known as BloodPop, also worked on her album Joanne (2016). They began writing songs for Chromatica while she filmed A Star Is Born . Though his songs didn’t make the film’s soundtrack, one song that did stand out from these sessions was “Stupid Love.”

Tucker and Gaga recorded a demo but felt something was missing. They played it for producer Max Martin, and he made suggestions Tucker said “really elevated” the song.  

When Gaga’s Joanne World Tour arrived in Kansas City, Tucker met her to play the new demo. “I played it on her Bluetooth speaker in her dressing room with my family and friends present. I would definitely consider that the moment  Chromatica  was started,” he said.

However, following A Star Is Born , Gaga kicked off a pair of Las Vegas residencies before working on her new album. It wasn’t until 2019 that she and producer Burns joined with Tucker to record Chromatica .

House Music History

They immersed themselves in ’90s house music, covering the studio walls with acid house posters while Burns sent the others playlists of classic house tracks. Sticking to the ’90s style, they told mixer Tom Norris not to use modern technology or trends.

Norris told Rolling Stone , “I was told not to use any sidechains throughout the album. Sidechains are a way of ducking one instrument out to make room for another, and it’s a really common thing in EDM. It wasn’t even possible to do when these classic ’90s house records were made. So I tried to steer clear from those to be true to that sound.”

The production included additional EDM legends such as Skrillex, Tchami, Axwell, Madeon, Boys Noize, and Johannes Klahr. Skrillex and Tucker had worked together on Justin Bieber’s Purpose (2015).

Review: ‘ROOM UNDER THE STAIRS’ takes listeners on a journey through a new room in ZAYN’s mind

ZAYN’s fourth studio album, “Room Under the Stairs,” takes steps away from the sounds of his previous solo releases. From his primarily R&B debut solo album “Mind of Mine” to this acoustic-heavy album, Zayn Malik’s raw vocals have remained consistent. 

“Room Under the Stairs” was released on May 17, accompanied by a live one-night performance in London. This shocked fans as it was Malik’s first live solo performance and first live performance after leaving One Direction.

Malik announced “Room Under the Stairs” on social media in March 2024 with a heartfelt video directed to his listeners. He later released the album’s lead singles “What I Am” on March 15 and “Alienated” on April 12. On May 20, Malik released the extended version of “Room Under the Stairs,” with five “Z Side” tracks, including two demos.

After the lead single, “What I Am,” was dropped, fans were eager to hear the new direction that Malik was taking with his music. Malik experiments with his vocals and instrumentals on this track in a way fans had yet to hear. Known for his wide vocal range, Malik gave listeners an album with a mix of both high and low tones. Malik’s raw and raspy vocals can be heard throughout “Room Under the Stairs,” giving the album a country feel.

For “Room Under the Stairs,” Malik collaborated with Nashville producer Dave Cobb. Cobb’s work can be heard throughout the album. Cobb’s production on “Room Under the Stairs” takes the album to the next level. For example, track one, “Dreamin,” and “Z Side” track, “In the Bag,” are notable as they feature country-folk qualities like acoustics and keys.

“Room Under the Stairs” has few lows as Malik continues to explore music authentically on his terms. However, there is potential for improvement as the lyricism is lacking in comparison to his previous releases. The album starts off strong lyrically with singles “What I Am” and “Alienated” close to the beginning. Track seven, “Stardust,” was seemingly set up to be another favorite, however, it was as repetitive as it was dreamy. “Stardust” was also accompanied by a music video.

Overall, “Room Under the Stairs” is yet another raw and emotional record by ZAYN, but with a twist.

‘Diamond Dogs’ At 50: A Track-By-Track Guide To Every Song On David Bowie’s Apocalyptic Nightmare

Mind your step. This track-by-track guide to David Bowie’s ‘Diamond Dogs’ album takes a journey through the ravenous world of Hunger City.

After performing his final show as Ziggy Stardust in the summer of 1973, David Bowie sought to distance himself from his career-making alter ego with a covers album, Pin Ups . However, a long-term return to concept-free rock wasn’t part of the plan, as he began to develop George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four into a stage musical. When that fell through, Bowie created his own dystopian world to place his songs in, unveiling it on the Diamond Dogs album . Released on 24 May 1974, the record was as ambitious as anything Bowie had yet committed to tape, and would find him waving goodbye to his glam-rock past while also looking ahead to his soul-boy future.

As this track-by-track guide through each of Diamond Dogs ’ 11 songs shows, the album was yet another uncompromising missive from an artist declaring war on convention.

‘diamond dogs’ track-by-track: a guide to every song on the album, future legend.

Amid canine howls and foreboding synths, Bowie weaves together lyrical references to William Burroughs (the 1971 novel The Wild Boys ), vocal nods to Scott Walker (the former Walker Brother’s cover of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s Any Day Now) and a snatch of the melody from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered, all packed into a minute-long album opener that sets the scene for Diamond Dogs . Here is Hunger City in all its putrescent horror: corpses left “rotting on the slimy thoroughfare”, “fleas the size of rats” sucking “on rats the size of cats”, and “packs of dogs assaulting the glass fronts of Love-Me Avenue”. “This ain’t rock’n’roll, this is genocide!” is the jubilant exclamation that segues, over a sample of crowd noise taken from a Faces live album, into Diamond Dogs ’ first song proper, suggesting that Ziggy Stardust ’s Rock’n’Roll Suicide had been for naught.

Diamond Dogs

As if to assure listeners that Diamond Dogs really is a rock album, its title track hitches a Stonesy guitar riff to bar-band sax, both ably played by Bowie himself, who introduces the denizens of Hunger City with all the relish of a cabaret MC at a world’s-end carnival. There’s Halloween Jack, lodging on the roof of Manhattan’s Chase Bank; Jack’s faceless “little hussy”, identifiable by the Dalí brooch on her lapel; and the Diamond Dogs themselves, “mannequins with kill appeal” who police the streets “like violent Oliver Twists”, as Bowie later described them. Evoking a dog-eat-dog world of ravenous strays fighting for survival, the song would be given a 21st-century makeover in 2001, when Beck teamed up with hip-hop producer and Missy Elliott co-conspirator Timbaland to record a jittery electronic cover for Baz Lurhmann’s Moulin Rouge!

Sweet Thing

For all Diamond Dogs ’ dramatic imagery, Sweet Thing is where the album shifts into a truly theatrical register, lifting the curtain on a three-song medley crying out for the stage musical that never was. As if observing an encounter on Love-Me Avenue, Bowie sings of “love in a doorway” and “a portrait in flesh”, of sex work and vendor cries (“Boys, boys, it’s a sweet thing/… If you want it, boys, get it here, thing”). Yet, despite the seedy acts taking place in the shadows, he lays down one of his finest vocals on record. Mick Garson’s piano adds elegance to the decadence, but it’s Bowie’s performance – alternately commanding and yearning – that elevates the whole, giving Sweet Thing an unlikely emotional charge among unforgiving surroundings.

A martial beat ushers in Act Two of this three-act mini-drama – what Bowie would later describe to Mail Online as “a profligate world that could have been inhabited by characters from Kurt Weill or John Rechy”, bridging the previously unexplored gap “between Enid Blyton’s Beckenham and The Velvet Underground’s New York”. With Bowie now fully inhabiting the role of procurer, the dangers of trade encounters and power imbalances become all too clear, Bowie’s “john” unravelling over slashing guitar, doom-laden sax and a skittish piano that just about makes it through alive. Floors, the backs of cars, church cellars – all are scenes of insatiable lust for a character who, losing his composure, hatches a desperate escape plan: “We’ll buy some drugs and watch a band/Then jump in the river holding hands”.

Sweet Thing (Reprise)

A saxophone squall interrupts any such train of thought before easing the listener back into the “Boys” refrain of Sweet Thing and a reprise that, in its rising melody, initially seems set to give Bowie’s characters a soft landing. However, Bowie bows out with an intimation of lives ravaged by addiction (“It’s all I ever wanted/It’s a street with a deal and a taste/It’s got claws, it’s got me, it’s got you”), sounding for all the world like a Broadway star as he hits his final high note. Graceful piano flourishes are soon subsumed by churning guitars that build with little thought for Hunger City’s victims before remorselessly closing the curtain on one of the most remarkable nine minutes in Bowie’s catalogue.

Rebel Rebel

With a guitar riff that hangs just the right side of sleazy, Rebel Rebel struts into view with all the self-confidence of a peacocking fashionista. Effectively Bowie’s kiss-off to glam rock (his subject’s dress is “torn”, their face “a mess”), the song is a call to arms for hedonistic rebellion against staid mores, and a moment of respite from the relentless despair of Diamond Dogs ’ first half. Surprisingly malleable, Rebel Rebel would be remixed for US single release, with Bowie and friend/backing singer Geoff MacCormack adding acoustic guitar, phased vocal effects and a battery of percussion instruments that would up the song’s dancefloor appeal and reveal Bowie’s burgeoning interest in Latin and soul music.

Rock’n’Roll With Me

Another chink of light appears with Rock’n’Roll With Me, allowing for the first glimpse of Bowie’s imminent departure into “plastic soul”. A gear shift after all that’s come before, the song rolls along at a gentle pace – gospel -tinged keyboard, “ooh”-ing backing vocals – as Bowie sketches an impassioned portrayal of an artist drawing a line under one creative era (“Me, I’m out of breath, but not quite doubting/I’ve found a door which lets me out”) while extending an invitation for fans to follow him into the next (“When you rock and roll with me/No one else I’d rather be”). “I’m happy my music is going in the new direction,” he told Melody Maker a little over three months on from Diamond Dogs ’ release. “There were times, frankly, when I could have told the audience to do anything, and that’s frightening… I’ve got to be very careful about what I do with it.”

We Are The Dead

The first clear acknowledgement of Diamond Dogs ’ roots in a planned Nineteen Eighty-Four musical, We Are The Dead revisits the dread of the Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise) medley with a restraint that makes it all the more haunting. Walking hand-in-hand with Mike Garson’s lightly-stepping electric piano, Bowie recounts a tale of doomed love (“Something kind of hit me today/I looked at you and wondered if you saw things my way”) that seems plucked from the lives of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four characters Winton Smith and Julia, but which takes up residency in Bowie’s own world of surveillance and paranoia. “Oh, dress yourself, my urchin one, for I hear them on the rails,” he sings. Yet, as ghostly backing vocals intone the song’s title – taken directly from Orwell’s novel – and other chilling lines (“We are the new boys/We are the dogs”), it’s clear there’s no escape for “today’s scrambled creatures/Locked in tomorrow’s double feature”.

With its dizzying strings and wah-wah-drenched guitar, 1984 is the clearest indication of where Bowie would be headed after Diamond Dogs : straight to the heart of Philadelphia soul, on his Young Americans album of 1975 . And yet the song also carries vestiges of where Bowie had been. Debuted during the recording of his NBC TV special, The 1980 Floor Show , 1984 is the second of three Diamond Dogs numbers repurposed from Bowie’s scrapped stage musical, and it would open each night of his Diamond Dogs/Soul Tour . “They’ll split your pretty cranium and fill it full of air/… You’ll be shooting up on anything, tomorrow’s never there,” he sings, upping the ante on George Orwell’s nihilism as he stares into the “savage jaw” of the future.

Big Brother

Named after the totalitarian ruler of Nineteen Eighty-Four , Big Brother opens with a strained Mellotron fanfare as if delivering listeners into the presence of the titular figure. In contrast to the dejection of the preceding nine songs, however, Bowie introduces a strain of suppliance: “Someone to claim us, someone to follow/Someone to shame us, some brave Apollo” he sings from the point of view of Hunger City’s misguidedly grateful waifs, drawing a line between what he saw as the manipulative power wielded by political leaders and charismatic rock idols alike. “One could play an enormous game with people, but I am not prepared to do it,” he told Melody Maker . “I could see how easy it was to get a whole rally thing going.” An unexpected acoustic breakdown, sharing more with Hunky Dory or even Bowie’s earlier music-hall-styled songs, drops in out of nowhere, before sax and guitar grind out the ending like a despot pressing his boot-heel on the necks of his subjects.

Chant Of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family

Having traversed the slimy thoroughfares of Future Legend and “enrolled” in 1984, Bowie brings Diamond Dogs to a close on two minutes of tribal-like chanting that bursts forth from Big Brother with distorted guitar and skin-crawling güiro. “Brother/Hoo-hoo/Shake it up, shake it up/Move it up, move it up” goes the mantra, until it becomes impossible to tell if this is a declaration of allegiance or an iron-fisted demand. As abruptly as it started, the song ends on 30 seconds of a repeated “Bro” syllable, a locked-groove effect created by accident (Bowie initially wanted the word “brother” to be looped) but which makes for a perfectly maniacal close to Bowie’s end-days dispatch.
