Meet our Captains

Find out more about the Captains at the helm of our ships.

Captain Kim Tanner

Captain Kim Tanner

Working his way up from Staff Captain to fully-fledged Master, Captain Tanner has been at the helm of Saga ships since 2017.

Hailing from Jersey, Captain Tanner now calls the Spanish island of Majorca his home. Despite being our youngest Master he has been "messing around in boats since he could crawl", and has worked at sea professionally for almost 15 years, including service as a Chief Officer for P&O and Cunard ships such as QM2.

Captain Franko Papic

Captain Franko Papic

Being at sea has always been a part of his life. Ahed 16, his first job was on a cargo ship in the North Sea, after his second year at Nautical College. After graduation, he commenced his cadetship on Croatian coastal ferries. After three years, he graduated from the Maritime University of Rijeka and went back to sea as a Third Officer in 2005.

The following year, Franko joined Seabourn Cruise Line, where he spent the next 10 years, progressing through the ranks to Staff Captain, and being a part of four new-build ship deliveries. In late 2016, just as the final newbuild was being delivered, he was approached with an offer to join Saga Cruises. He has relished being part of Saga family for seven years now and he is delighted to be a Saga Captain.

Captain Jason Ikiadis

Captain Jason Ikiadis

Captain Ikiadis first went to sea in 1986, and has held many positions since, working up the ranks to captain for cruise lines such as Azamara and TUI.

“Call me CJ” says our Master, who comes from a long line of seafarers, including his own father who was a ship captain, and his paternal grandfather who was in the Royal Navy. “Following in their footsteps was inevitable” he says.

Captain Kreso Volaric

Captain Krešo Volarić

Captain Krešo was born in Rijeka, Croatia where he spent most of his childhood messing around on boats; it was inevitable that he would one day make it as a Master on one. His career began as a Cadet in 1991, allowing him to complete his BSC degree in Nautical Studies and Maritime Transport and Technologies in 1997.

He first started on variety of container, cargo, reefer ships, followed by passenger ferries before joining the cruise industry.

Cruise Webcams to Watch Right Now

saga cruise ships webcam

What’s the next best thing to being on a cruise ship ? Perhaps finding your next cruise deal makes top of the list but, until that next sail away party happens, watching cruise ship webcams will help as you daydream about the next group vacation .

Watching live cruise ship webcams or tuning into your favorite port cam will help keep you up to date with the comings and goings at popular cruise ports . Virtually take in the sunshine with the Port Nassau webcam or scan the Miami cruise port webcam to spy on your favorite ship as it sets sail to tropical destinations .

Not all cruise lines offer live feeds, unfortunately. The Royal cams were discontinued, for example, but there are many cruise ship webcams to watch. The Norwegian Getaway webcam offers dreamy views from the bridge, as do many others included in the list below. Take a look at our roundup of cruise ship webcams and port cam availability below.

Editor's note: Cruise lines and ports are only listed if they had active webcams at the time of publication. Some links point to aggregate pages to access the cameras from multiple ships, while others go to individual ship cams. Feed functionality and quality are subject to change at any time and are dependent on many factors, including weather, connection speeds and the whims of cruise line and port officials.

Cruise Ship Webcams: Find Your Favorite Ship in Port or at Sea

Carnival Fascination (Photo: Carnival Cruise Line)

AIDA Cruises Webcams

German cruise line AIDA offers 36 cruise ship webcams , including three different perspectives from their newest ship, AIDAcosma . Guests who have downloaded Aida’s mobile app will also be able to watch live feeds from cruise ship cameras, including views from the bridge.

Costa Cruises Webcams

Costa Cruises offers a convenient landing page noting which cruise ship webcams are available. The page also shares the ship’s current position and itinerary. While these Costa cruise ship cameras offer a small live feed from the bow and aft, larger webcam views are available elsewhere.

Norwegian Cruise Ship Webcams

Norwegian Cruise Line has cruise ship webcams on much of its fleet. While there isn’t a single aggregate webcam page on NCL.com , it is easy enough to find individual cruise ship cameras by visiting NCL’s website.

On the NCL site , click on your ship of choice and scroll to the image gallery to see an option for webcam. Clicking that will produce a static recent image from the ship’s live camera. Here is a link to the Norwegian Bliss webcam , for example. Alternatively, Cruising Earth hosts a page with all the Norwegian ship cameras .

Princess Cruise Ship Webcams

Princess Cruises makes it easy to find an assortment of bridge views by housing all of its cruise ship webcams on a single page . The visual includes a note of where the ship is or is on route to.

TUI Cruises Webcams

German cruise line TUI Cruises provides a dozen live cruise ship webcams from its fleet. On the cruise line’s website, visitors can also navigate to their favorite Mein Schiff ship to watch time lapse videos from the cruise ship cameras, like this video for Mein Schiff 4 .

Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking Ocean Cruises has eight webcams available online on one aggregate page. Live feeds from the cruise ship webcams note the current location and itinerary name for each Viking vessel.

Cruise Port Webcams: Watch a Live Feed of Ships in Port

Palm Beach Tour at Oranjestad, Aruba Port

Bimini Port Webcam

Curious about Virgin Voyages ? You can sneak a peek at Scarlet Lady or other vessels from visiting cruise lines, like Celebrity or Carnival , thanks to this port cam at the port of Bimini .

Cozumel Cruise Port Webcam

Grab your favorite fruity cocktail and view up to four ships at once with the Cozumel cruise port cam , which broadcasts via a live YouTube feed. You’ll be dreaming up your next Cozumel cruise booking in no time.

Grand Cayman Cruise Port Webcam

This collection of port cams at Grand Cayman shows the outdoor cruise port facilities, the dock and cargo facilities. You might catch a glimpse of sunshine, or see the occasional poor weather that strikes the Caribbean from time to time.

Grand Turk Cruise Port Webcam

While no continuous port cam feed is available, the webcam for Grand Turk 's cruise center features still images that are updated every few minutes. Even a brief glimpse is enough to get excited about reuniting with the port’s swim up pool bar .

Juneau Cruise Port Webcam

With this port cam in Juneau , Alaska, not only will you get a view of ships docked in Juneau, but you'll also catch an eyeful of floatplanes and the gorgeous scenery surrounding it all. Just click play and skip the commercial to start watching.

Ketchikan Cruise Port Webcam

Although the Ketchikan port cam is a still shot that's updated every few hours, it's a great way to

get a look at three of the port's berths. It’s also a nice glimpse at Ketchikan’s waterfront, though the Salmon Walk is just out of view.

Key West Cruise Port Webcam

This rotating webcam in Key West , set atop the Shipwreck Museum's tower, offers sweeping real-time views of the Key West Harbor. Press play on the port cam and skip the commercial to stay updated on cruise ship arrivals and departures.

King's Wharf Cruise Port Webcam

This rotating live view from the port cam at the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda shows the naval yard, as well as the cruise ship dock. Click the play button and bypass the commercial to get started.

Miami Cruise Port Webcam

Port Miami , one of the busiest cruise homeports in the world, offers live panoramic views from its port cam. To watch the Miami cruise port webcam , just click on play, and skip the commercial.

Nassau Cruise Port Webcam

The Port Nassau webcam shows live views of the cruise ship docking area from the top of a nearby hotel. Hit the play button and you’ll see docked ships and sail aways aplenty. The camera moves around so you can even get a close-up view of passengers on the deck.

Port Canaveral Cruise Port Webcam

With this webcam , Port Canaveral views include images of your favorite family-friendly ships as they come and go. The port cam is set atop a nearby restaurant. Be sure to click the play button and skip the commercial to start the feed.

Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale) Cruise Port Webcam

Fort Lauderdale 's Port Everglades webcam is another way to keep tabs on the constant influx of ships in Florida . Check out dock views on this port cam by pressing the play button.

Roatan (Mahogany Bay) Cruise Port Webcam

Although it won't give you a view of the ship, this Roatan port cam shows you the outdoor port facilities area at Mahogany Bay . The view is a bit hazy, and it's a still photo that's only updated once every few hours, but if you're missing Roatan, this is a good way to get your fix.

Spirit of Adventure 10 Oct- Live Report

By MonsieurD , October 13, 2021 in Saga Cruises

Cool Cruiser

I thought that some readers might be interested in a live report on the Saga Spirit of Adventure 10 Oct 21 sailing from Tilbury to Western France, Spain and Portugal returning  to Southampton 14 days later. I will try not to offer too many comparisons with the other  30 or so cruises that we have been on previously.  Before sailing, the information provided by Saga was adequate and it included our allocated cabin number, time of pick up by their transport and some luggage labels. Not much else regarding COVID testing and protocols, although we were aware that it would not be possible to explore on our own in the ports. We did book some tours in advance online.

The journey to Tilbury in a very nice car was uneventful,  and we arrived at the port at 1.30 pm. While still in the car, we ( and the driver) had a Lateral Flow Test. After about 30 minutes the test results were apparent and, while still in the car, we were moved to another queue for a PCR sputum test. Spitting into a test tube was not particularly pleasant, and I sympathised with the driver who elected to wait outside the car! We then moved to the cruise terminal to unload the baggage. Registering with Saga was very quick, and, at last, we were ready to board the ship. It took 2 hours from arriving at the dock to embarking the Spirit of Adventure.

The WiFi has been very reliable so far, and I hope to add to this thread as the cruise progresses . If I can answer any questions,  please just ask here. For now.

Thanks looking forward to reports especially food and drink.

I presume the PCR was because LFT  was positive in your case , or do they double test everyone.

They double test everyone.

No harm in that, safer than other lines

All the passengers were double tested for COVID at Tilbury. We also filled in a health, and recent travel,  questionnaire. Under current Covid-19 regulations, Pax from Eire and the Channel Islands need to check that they meet the requirements.

We were impressed with our normal balcony cabin. It is spotless and more spacious than many of those of equivalent grade on mainstream ships. There were face masks issued and the crew wear them all the time.  Pax need to wear masks unless seated with a drink or eating. The bathroom  amenities are from Prija in 135 ml bottles not sachets or other small containers. Very handy and reasonable quality. The lighting in the cabin is good and a large screen TV is mounted on the wall. The information on the screen includes the daily programme and other ships info including a webcam from the bridge. Unfortunately, so far, the daily  weather info is not available. There is a selection of movies available and some Freeview tv channels. No SKY channels, although there is a placeholder for Sky News.

So far, we have called in to two ports in Brittany and today we are alongside about 10 miles from Bordeaux. The reports from the tours are very mixed. Not being able to wander off alone in the ports is a major disadvantage.  The food has been excellent. I am aware that this is very subjective, but there is so much choice of well prepared dishes with good ingredients that only the very picky eaters would not be pleased. Allergies are well catered for. In the The Grill and the outside  burger/fish and chips outlet, all the food is served to you - no self service. The included wine is drinkable and, probably, best described as table wine. Again, it is a personal view, but the white is Ok, the rose is better, but the red Spanish is a bit iffy. The included beers are from the Whitstable brewery . There is a choice of Pale Ale and lager. Neither are to my taste, and they will not suit most beer drinkers. The included spirits are from the lower shelf but are passable especially with mixers. Teas and coffees are served in all the lounges and they go down well. In summary, the food is far better than expected, but wine lovers might have to dip into their wallets. More next time……. D

There shouldn’t be any pax from Eire or the Channel Islands we were told mainland residents only till the new year at least, wouldn’t let us book from 🇮🇲

Thanks , everything  sounds good except wine , second bad review in a few days. Looks like I may have to shell out on better wines. At least they are reasonably  priced, less than UK restaurants.

As a glass half full it is far far better that the food beats your expectations than the wine. Can fix wine issue by premium wine. End up with great food and wine.

Still will be a bit disappointing if Saga wine doesn't do the rest of the food and ship justice. Saga cruises aren't a cheap "all inclusive " holiday, and serving poor wine doesn't match their boutique promise.

OK, it's not fine wine but I'm sure if you try them all you will  find one that is acceptable. In fact after the second glass I found they went down very well. 😀

My understanding is that, provided that they travel to England, 7 days before embarkation, non mainland residents can join the ship. However, I emphasise that this info did not originate from the Saga authorities.

Thanks for that, we weren’t given that option not that we’d have done it anyway more chance of catching it in a hotel over that period of time than 3 hours on a ferry.

We had a very nice day in Santander. Good weather and a well run tour from the included folio.

Sorry, but the WiFi has been patchy/ overloaded so I am a bit behind with the ‘live’ report. After the mixed reports on the tours In Brittany, I was pleased that in Santander all went well.

A couple of amendments to my earlier report. Sky News and Sky Sports are listed as being available, but the reception is very intermittent. Instead of the Cab Sav that I trashed earlier, there is now a Merlot offered as an included option; I find it very drinkable. The in- room interactive TV now shows the weather forecast for the day.

We have now had 2 formal nights. I have not spotted anyone in the main dining room in casual clothes. Limited to 6 per table, some of the larger tables pose a problem for those with hearing difficulties as folk are seated too far apart. On formal  nights, one  can eat in The Grill without getting poshed up. Incidentally, the menu in The Grill in the evenings is the same as the Main Dining room. I was slightly surprised that one is served in The Grill in the evening- unlike the evening buffet found on many cruise lines.

The standard of food remains high, in my view.  Today we are in Porto, and it was rainy during the tour. However, our tour left on time and was well conducted.

We have not attended all the evening shows, as sometimes dinner drags on and they do not allow entrance after the show starts at 9.30 pm. A comedy duo were very entertaining,  and the ships in house show was OK. One other comedian tried hard, but found it hard work to get the audience involved. Having to wear a mask throughout the show is tiresome for the audience. The staff do try to trace everyone by recording cabin numbers in all locations. However, in the lifts after the shows, where we are supposed to be in groups of no more than six, the protocol seems to be ignored by some groups of 10.

If any of my fellow cruisers feel like adding to this thread with their views, please feel welcome- even if your don’t agree with my comments about the cruise.

Thank you for your reports.  I was particularly happy to hear that formal dress isn't necessary in the Grill.  Do you know if the Grill is a quieter option in the evenings?  (I mean fewer diners, not the noise levels!(

The Grill is set up for waiter served dinner with the same menu as in the Main Dining room. The tables are for two or four, and for dinner white table cloths are put out that make the tables look nice. The food is prepared in the main galley downstairs, but even so it is quicker to dine in the Grill than the Main Dining room. It is not as busy in The Grill in the evenings as the Main Dinig room. It is also less noisy. As I mentioned up thread, the larger tables in the Dining Room  are awkward when only populated with up to 6 diners due to the present COVID precautions.

After a sea day yesterday, when we seemed to sail through a sea fret for most of the day, SoA is now in Cadiz vice Huelva and basking in lovely sunshine. The P&O Ventura is also in port. Her passengers seem free to wander around the town on their own. Roll on November the first! ( see Janet’s thread). Our included bus tour of the town was efficiently boarded and well guided for about one and a half hours, including a short photo op down by the river. The Master of SoA took part in a very interesting Q&A session yesterday. Many questions were handled with humour, and he did not seek to evade answering the more searching questions. UK politicians, please take note. Last night’s show was well attended and the Michael Buble tribute was well received. We sail at 5pm today and start heading northwards for home. I will try to address the Speciality Dining options next time.   😭 D

On our 5 night cruise this month, we found this menu very limited. Our last Saga cruise was on SoD in October 2019 and we enjoyed the buffet dinners in The Grill most evenings. As someone who eats masses of salads and veggies, we are considering cancelling our next cruise if this policy remains in place. We assume it is a cost-cutting exercise, rather than a Covid precaution, because the "served" buffet worked perfectly well at breakfast and lunch.

Isn't it more likely that because of the need for social distancing,  the MDR could not  handle the sheer numvers involved, hence the need to use The Grill as an "overspill" venue.

Unfortunately,  whilst I appreciate that you enjoy veg and salads, you are probably in the minority in the evenings,  and Saga are trying to cater for the needs of the vast majority.

I'm sure that if asked,  the Head Waiter  could satisfy your requirements.

I am now asking for extra vegetables with the meals in the evening in both the Grill and Dining Room. I usually end up with about a third of a plate of peas and sometimes broccoli. We do miss the self service evening buffet and hope it comes back soon.

I am on SoA at present and completely agree with comments about the lack of buffet service in the Grill in the evenings and the consequent scarcity of salads and vegetables. The MDR is definitely not over subscribed so the Grill does not need to replicate the offering there. We have preferred the Grill in the evenings in the past so hope it returns to how it used to be.

Can't you ask for a salad?

I hope I'm wrong, but I think while covid is still very much in evidence I don't see self service in the buffet coming back any time soon.

Possibly I could have, but everyone's idea of "salad" is different and choosing from a buffet selection is much simpler.

There is a buffet in The Grill at breakfast and lunch, but it is served by staff behind (or in front of) the counters. I agree that a self-service buffet may never return, but that is not the point.

Just to be clear, there is assisted buffet service in the Grill for breakfast and lunch. You point to whatever combination you would like and the staff at that particular station put it on the plate. You can then go to other stations to add further items if you wish. There’s no queue and it works well. In the evening it is full waiter service from a menu so you can’t easily mix and match. Yes of course you can ask for a salad but you can’t pick and choose exactly what you want or which vegetables and how many as you can at lunch.

There doesn’t seem any good reason why assisted buffet service shouldn’t operate in the evening , particularly as every other venue is waiter served from a menu.

Thanks

Cadiz proved to be a nice town and we had the best weather of the cruise so far. The included exclusion was well organised. Leaving Cadiz, we headed for Vigo, but the ship diverted via Cascais in Portugal,  because of a medical emergency. However, we made up time and arrived in Vigo as planned. The included tour  to Baiona was excellent, and I am impressed by the tour organisers. However, I did not take a tour in any of the French ports (as they were extra); I understand that they included themes  from ‘Allo Allo.

The three speciality restaurants on board are all good and they make a pleasant change for the evening meals. It was easy to get one reservation in each venue but, except for suite occupants, it was more difficult to add an additional booking. That is only fair so that everyone gets at least one reservation if they choose so. In my view, the Italian is the best of the three, but I hasten to add that everyone will have a different view. The Amalfi room is very pleasant and the food was very tasty. The Supper Club is a larger venue with live music. The menu was bistro style and my steak was fine but nothing special. The music can be a bit loud and The Supper Club was the least relaxing venue. The Nepalese restaurant is a smaller venue and the tables are very close to each other. The food is nice, and the tastes very subtle. Anyone expecting it to be like their local Balti will be surprised . The deserts were the weakest servings. The Gulab Jaman needed more rose syrup and the Gajar Halwa was very dry. Very subjective comments!

Regarding the policy of providing waiter service in The Grill in the evenings, I am advised by veteran Saga cruisers that even BC ( before COVID), there wasn’t a buffet option in the evenings.

As we track back to Soton, we will take a Sputum PCR test early on disembarkation day, to satisfy the English health authorities.

Blue Sapphire Review

Review of blue sapphire.

The 1981-built Saga Sapphire cruise ship (now Blue Sapphire) was one of Saga Cruises UK 's two old vessels - together with the fleetmate Saga Pearl 2 . Sapphire was transferred to Saga Holidays/Saga Travel (part of SAGA Group UK) in 2011 and inaugurated in March 2012.

Saga Sapphire and Saga Pearl 2 were both withdrawn from service (left the fleet) after SAGA Group's two newbuilds - Spirit of Discovery (2019) and Spirit of Adventure (2020) - were delivered. In August 2019 was announced that Saga Sapphire will be acquired by ANEX Tours (Turkey's largest travel agency/tour operator), starting operations for ANEX Tours in mid-2020. The 39-year-old liner was sold to/acquired by ANEX Tours on June 18, 2020.

The ship (renamed "Blue Sapphire") started operations for ANEX Tours in 2021, with an inaugural cruise program based on roundtrips from homeport Antalya Turkey and Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea itinerarires.

(ANEX Tours/shipowner) In November 2019, after acquiring Thomas Cook Group's subsidiaries in Germany (Oger Tours, Bucher Reisen, Neckermann) and Russia (Intourist / 1929-founded USSR-Russia travel brand privatized in the 1990s by Vladimir Yevtushenkov), ANEX Tours became the world's second-largest tour operator - after TUI Group. The company's Chairman (Neset Kockar) commented that expects the annual passenger volume to increase to 8 million and the turnover to reach ~EUR 10 billion (~USD 11B).

Thomas Cook Group (2007-founded / 2019-defunct) was a British travel group formed by the merger of Thomas Cook AG (British-German, 2001-founded) and MyTravel Group plc (British, 1972-founded). Neset Kockar (ANEX Tours) was the second-largest shareholder in Thomas Cook Group - after Fosun International (China).

In late-February ANEX Turkey announced its new brand "Selectum Blu Cruises", with CEO Necdet Ucarlar. ANEX Tours plans to expand Selectum Blu Cruises' fleet to 3 ships (second-hand vessels), with itineraries in Europe, Asia and Caribbean, and homeporting in Turkey, China (or Vietnam) and the Dominican Republic. ANEX Tours sell holidays (including ship cruises) since 1996.

Saga Sapphire's last drydock refurb (by SAG UK) was in 2015. Following the acquisition, ANEX Tours Turkey planned a drydock refurbishment for Blue Sapphire to be conducted in 2020-Q3. As of December 1, 2020, the ship was docked at Port Marmaris Turkey .

For SAGA UK, the vessel (IMO number 7822457) was Malta- flagged (MMSI 256208000) and registered in Valletta . Following the ANEX acquisition, Blue Sapphire is now Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 311000978) and registered in Nassau .

"Selectum Blu Cruises" is operated via the Malta-based subsidiary "AnexSea Cruises Ltd" (February 2020-incorporated, company number C94928, headquartered in Sliema, Malta) and plans to acquire/purchase a second vessel.

History - construction and ownership

Saga Cruises (Saga Shipping) is a UK-based company, division of Saga Group. By purchasing Saga Rose, Saga Group started its passenger shipping operations. The boat operated as flagship until 2005 when was added Saga Ruby (bought from Cunard Line). For the 2003 summer Saga Cruises chartered mv Minerva (built 1989), which was renamed to Saga Pearl. Saga Rose was retired after a final 37-night Mediterranean voyage. Subsequently, the ship was scrapped in China. Saga Ruby departed for Gibraltar out of Southampton for the last time on Jan. 10 and was handed over to the new shipowner on January 13, 2014.

Saga Sapphire cruise ship

Saga Sapphire was originally built for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises as ms Europa (link to the HP ship). "MS Europa" was the 5th ship for Hapag-Lloyd with that name. Through the years, the vessel was renamed several times - SuperStar Europe (1999-2000, owner Star Cruises Asia ), Superstar Aries (2000-2004, owner Star Cruises Asia), ms Holiday Dream (2004-2008, owner Club Vacaciones), Bleu de France (2008-2011, owner Pulllmantur-CDF ). In November 2010, the ship was bought by Saga UK but remained on charter by CDF-France (Pullmantur subsidiary) for the next year. After an extensive refit in 2012, the ship received the name "MS Saga Sapphire".

The 752-passenger ship Saga Sapphire was introduced (as the company's flagship) in March 2012. Sapphire was the largest vessel operated by Saga Group (a UK-based corporation that specializes in financial services and also cruise shipping for 50+ aged travelers).

In November 2011, Saga Holidays took ownership of Pullmantur CDF’s Bleu de France, immediately beginning a multimillion drydock refurbishment of the 706-passenger vessel. The vessel changed hands a few times since its debut in 1981 as Hapag-Lloyd's Europa. Saga Cruises successfully created a stylish but contemporary ship with lovely British touches. A part of the refurb was the stunning 7-m installation of 1395 stainless steel fish (Atrium Lobby's centerpiece). To Saga Sapphire's staterooms (Deck 8) were added 46 step-out balconies - increasing the balcony cabins to 65. Amenities include electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), DVD player, smart HDTV, direct-dial phone (intercom), hairdryer, mini-fridge, individually controlled air-conditioning. Public spaces were redesigned and now support using mobile devices via Wi-Fi connectivity (Saga UK's first such amenity).

Decks and Cabins

Saga Sapphire/Blue Sapphire staterooms (382 total, in 25 categories) and include 6 Royal Suites, 1 Owner Suite, 3 Grand Suites, Standard Outside (1 Suite, 2 Singles, 21 Doubles /all with obstructed views), Standard Inside Single, 6 wheelchair-accessible cabins. Of all staterooms, 179 are with baths (of which 20 have showers) and 58 are studios (single-occupancy cabins, including 2 with balconies). The total 65 Balcony cabins are with relatively narrow step-out verandas (still but big enough for sitting).

The boat has 12 decks , of which 9 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins. The cruise ship is of an older design and has no identical (production-line fabricated/same-sized) cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Dining venues on Saga Sapphire are fare-included. Saga Sapphire’s main Pole to Pole restaurant is situated on Deck 7, accommodating a maximum of 620 people. Pole to Pole is split into separate themed areas on seven continents, with intimate impression. The windows are down each of the room’s sides and geographical variation is provided by enlarged photographs. Dinner is open-seating. It is served between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The passengers choose to dine as couples or join a table of four or six. Traditionalists prefer eating at the same table, at the same time and with the same companions each day. They can be accommodated by speaking to the maitre d’ on request on cruise’s first day and are expected to use the same table throughout the cruise.

Each morning, a continental buffet is being set out in the restaurant, with waiter service for tea and coffee, fresh toast or cooked items. Waiter-service lunch is provided also in Pole to Pole. The Grill is Saga Sapphire’s alternative dining area on Deck 9. Full waiter service is also available throughout the day, with a self-service salad section during lunch. At lunchtime, if weather permitting, a barbecue grill is being set up on the Verandah. The Grill stays open 30 minutes after Pole to Pole at breakfast. Continental buffet and daily cooked specialities are served at breakfast. Saga Cruises has decided to increase the number of self-serve buffet offerings. Make a reservation for speciality restaurant East to West at no extra charge. The restaurant offers an Asian fusion menu of Thai, Chinese, Sri Lankan and Indian. Lunchtime burgers, hot dogs, fish and chips, are served poolside at the Beach Club, which also offers unlimited soft ice cream.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The Drawing Room up on Deck 11 provides computers for travellers’ access to the Internet. Wi-Fi is also available. The Academy on Deck 4 is used as an addition to Brittania Lounge for onboard lectures. There and in the library are many books to borrow, as well as DVDs and iPads. The two shops on Deck 8 supply formal wear, resort clothes, confectionery, souvenirs, travel necessities, pharmaceuticals.

Daytime lectures and evening shows are held in Britannia Lounge which is on Deck 8. It serves also as the meeting point for the departures to shore excursions, afternoon teas, and cocktail parties. Britannia Lounge is furnished with soft chairs and sofas - it is the boat's main entertainment venue with an array of musicians and cabarets in the evening, hosting lectures and dancing lessons throughout the day. To the opposite is situated the Card Room, decorated in gold leaf, open to card-game enthusiasts. The Drawing Room up on Deck 11, with expansive observation windows and panoramic views, is furnished with furniture eclectic collection and knick-knacks - an entertainment venue that is alternative with vessel’s second dance floor. The Drawing Room is also a perfect place for a daytime retreat. Cooper's Bar on Deck 8 is a popular pre-dinner bar, themed around the comedian Tommy Cooper. The flat-screen TV is used for half-hour comedy shows.

Saga Sapphire cruise ship

The Aviators Bar is one deck down, adjacent to Reception Desk. Drinks are available also from the Beach Club on Deck 11, by the pool. The Clubhouse is adjoining the pool area - an indoor room with games like table football and tennis. A small troupe of singers and dancers are available onboard the Saga Sapphire. They perform productions of show tunes that are popular. The afternoon tea is accompanied by a classical trio or string quartet, playing for pre-dinner dancing. Comedians, guest singers, virtuoso instrumentalists take part in cabaret performances, although Saga Sapphire is not a late-night clubbing vessel.

Sapphire’s outdoor cinema “View from the Top” is situated above the Beach Club (Saga's first). The mini-golf course St Andrews is on Deck 12, in front of the ship. Saga's shore excursions are usually led by local guides and they prove to be popular because of the reasonable price.

The Saga Sapphire beauty and spa salon is situated deep down on Deck 2. Alongside the hair salon and the treatment rooms are the steam room and the sauna. A rudimentary gym also awaits for you. There are a whirlpool bath and a heated indoor pool. The main pool is situated on Deck 11 and it is surrounded by sun loungers and deckchairs. Saga Sapphire View from the Top is an outdoor cinema above the Beach Club - the first of its kind for Saga UK. Also on Deck 11 is a small golf course, called St Andrews.

Saga Sapphire cruise ship drydock refurbishment

Saga Cruises passengers are not comfortable with the concept “resort casual”. Saga Sapphire is not dedicated to 21st-century fashion. Most of the men wear ties and jackets even on casual evenings; suits are for informal nights. Also frequently used are the cravats and blazers, particularly among Britannia Club members. Women usually wear blouse-and-skirt combinations, dresses, light, and airy or elegant cocktail outfits. The seven-night cruises have two formal nights; the 2-weeks voyages have three.

Tips for cabin stewards and waiters are included in fares. There are no gratuities added automatically to bar bills or spa treatments. The pound sterling is the currency on board.

Follows the complete list of Saga Sapphire lounges, clubs, and other entertainment venues for kids, teens, and adults.

Itineraries

Blue Sapphire itinerary program was planned to start with a Maiden Voyage in May 2021. However, the Inaugural Cruise was eventually rescheduled for August 28th. The 7-night itinerary (Aug 28 - Sept 4/Antalya roundtrip) visited Alexandria (Egypt), Kusadasi-Ephesus  and Marmaris .

In 2021-2022, the ship was homeported in Antalya Turkey for roundtrips visiting ports and islands in the Eastern Mediterranean. In September-November 2021, ANEX Tours scheduled for Blue Sapphire homeporting in Marmaris Turkey with roundtrips to Greek islands and Turkish ports. For 2021-2022 winter season, the boat was deployed in the Persian Gulf, with homeporting in Dubai UAE .

Selectum Blu Cruises 2023 program (May-October) had scheduled roundtrips from homeport Bodrum Turkey . The 3-4-night/4-5-day Eastern Mediterranean itineraries visited Greek island ports - Mykonos , Santorini , Rhodes , Kos . Some voyages visit Piraeus-Athens and Heraklion (Crete Island) . The season started on May 2nd

ANEX Selectum Blu Cruises brand targets customers mainly from Eastern Europe and Russia-Ukraine-Kazakhstan. Turkish passengers are estimated to be 15-20% of the source market. All onboard announcements are made in several languages.

Note: Saga Sapphire itinerary program was based on roundtrips from the UK ports Dover and Southampton to the British Isles, Norway Fjords, Mediterranean, Canary Islands, Canada/New England, and the Caribbean with round-trip Transatlantic crossings.

Saga cruise passengers are 50-60+, mainly British and repeaters (known as "saganauts"). This typical UK cruise ship is adults-only (child-free environment). Ship's last Captain (for Saga) was Julian Burgess. While operated by Saga UK, the ship was Malta- flagged (MMSI 256208000) and registered in Valletta .

In 2018, Saga Sapphire passengers had the unique opportunity to visit the Meyer Werft shipbuilding yard (in Papenburg Germany ) and see the construction of Saga's new ship Spirit of Discovery . The location was part of organized from Bremen cruise tour itinerary during the 6-night "Easter Getaway" cruise (March 28, 2018). The shipyard's guided tour enabled guests to see the vessel's construction progress and learn about its design and the shipbuilding process itself. The unique 6-night cruise itinerary was priced from GBP 968 pp departing from Southampton England . The UK travel package (to and from Portsmouth) included all meals, table wines (at lunch and dinner), afternoon tea, 24-hour room service, unlimited tea/coffee (selected venues), free Wi-Fi internet, onboard gratuities, porterage, free shuttle bus transfer (to nearest town).

In 2018, the ship had scheduled "Isle of Man and the TT" (motorcycle race) themed cruise (7-day itinerary May 29 - June 5) leaving roundtrip from Dover to Dublin , Liverpool , Isle of Man (Douglas, June 2) and Isle of Portland (June 4). The all-inclusive ticket prices started from GBP 1000 pp (double-occupancy Inside Cabin fare). Saga Cruises all-inclusive deals on the voyage included UK land travel (to / from homeport Dover), 24-hour room service, welcome aboard cocktail party, onboard meals and entertainment, table wine (at lunches and dinners), house-brand alcohol, cocktails, beers, mixers, soft drinks (all served complimentary in onboard bars and lounges), Afternoon Tea service, unlimited tea and coffee, Wi-Fi, all gratuities, porterage, free transfers (shuttle bus to / from the ship in call ports).

During Saga Sapphire's drydock refurbishment in June 2016 (at Blohm+Voss Shipyard in Hamburg ) were extended Aviators Bar and the pool deck area. The ship's main engines received routine maintenance.

Blue Sapphire's first drydocking by ANEX Selectum Blu Cruises was conducted in 2022 and included a full-scale refurbishment of all public spaces and passenger staterooms, as well as a complete hull treatment and technical overhauls. The ship

s last drydocking was in 2024 (February-May) conducted at ICDAS Shipyard ( Cesme Turkey ).
