IELTS Essay Question:

Some people like to travel alone, while others think it is better to go together with someone.

Discuss both views and include your opinion.

Travelling is always an enriching experience, an activity that most people love. Visiting beautiful spots truly beneficial to people whether exploring a new place for the first time or returning to favorite destinations. While travelling alone can be more rewarding experience, others prefers to travel with any body else.  In my opinion, travelling with companion is more entertaining and memorable. This essay will evaluate the two possible options and discuss why I believe that travelling with other people is better than being alone.

Nowadays, travelers mostly enjoy the trip alone than being with companions or in a group. In tourist places like famous parks and beaches, it is noticeable the increase of solo travelers. One reason for this is that the new breed of travelers are interested in home-away-from-home experience. They wanted to explore life away from bustling city and this can only be enjoyed if an individual become totally alone in a strange place. Being alone allows a person to follow their own interest, as opposed to traveling with somebody else. Moreover, solo travelling is a right time to reflect and to take a deeper look at individual’s personality. With it, people are able to refresh their perspectives in life and discover more of their personality while being away.

In contrast, travelling with someone is more compelling in other people’s views, as the world now is getting more unsafe. In every trip not everything can go fine, there are some instances that travelers can get involve in accident or crime. For example, during the lonely trip there is possibility that someone will get sick or encountered misfortunes. Furthermore, exploring new destinations with somebody is an experience in itself, having a partner on a trip will be more enjoyable experience. Tourist would not be lonely if they are travelling with someone else. Hence, visiting new places is more meaningful if it is shared with love ones, this is one of the best moment to strengthens relationship.

In summary, travelling solo does definitely help a person develop inner peace and explore more places of their interest. But there are consequences that need to consider while travelling, which is the safety and security while on a trip. In my view, a trip with someone else is more fascinating than exploring a new places alone.

When it comes to IELTS Test, vocabulary is one of the most important skills a test-taker must have. In writing section, having a good grasp of English vocabulary will help you frame and convey your ideas in words using an effective and varied vocabulary. Here are some tourism-related vocabulary words that will be useful during your exam.

Band 9 sample essay about travelling

Home  »  IELTS BAND 9 ESSAYS  »  Band 9 sample essay about travelling

Some people like to travel outside their country. Others would rather travel to tourist spots in their own country first, before travelling abroad. Which do you prefer to do and why? Include specific details and examples to support your choice.

Over the past few decades the international tourism industry has gone through a boom period. Cheap air travel, in particular, has allowed ordinary working class people to travel to more international destinations than ever before. In this essay, I shall refer to number of sociological studies to show why – contrary to popular opinion – domestic travel should initially take precedence over international travel.

To begin with, people’s knowledge of their own countries and culture has grown increasingly sketchy. This is largely because foreign brands, television shows and cultural objects flood local markets.

For example, The Asian Cultural Society found that Japanese teenagers knew more about American television series than 19th Century Japanese woodcuts. It should therefore be clear that citizens need to know much more about their own countries, and that visits to local cultural centres should occur before visits to remote countries.

Secondly, people reap high economic benefits if they are well-travelled in their country of birth. This is because local travel, in particular, opens up business opportunities.

For example, the Korean Society for Entrepreneurship found that 40% of successful start-up companies were run by individuals who had travelled extensively in Korea and sniffed out small openings in developmentally neglected areas. Seen in this light, local travel can also be of vital economic significance

To conclude, although few would argue outright against foreign travel, there are certainly reasons why domestic travel is initially preferable. In the future, as some of the hype surrounding foreign travel dies down, these reasons will no doubt appear more attractive and conspicuous.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Analysis (Travelling – Reasons & Benefits) – Band 6.5

IELTS Writing Task 2 Analysis (Travelling – Reasons & Benefits) – Band 6.5

Let us try to analyse IELTS writing task 2 by one of the candidates preparing for IELTS:

A lot of people are travelling nowadays than before.

What are the reasons for this and what are benefits of travelling?

Candidate’s Response:

Travelling has become more economical and easy today than compared with the older days. In contrast to this, earlier period making a travel plan itself, used to be a tedious task as it included many factors like firstly setting up a budget, arrangement of various place bookings etc.

Today, people are travelling more than ever before due to easy connectivity and reach of many places. Moreover, people have more flexible jobs so they can take time out from their busy lives and and just have a weekend get away to any nearby places. Travelling has also become more affordable due to entry of many multinationals in the country and also mainly due to the reason of too much of competition. So everyone tries to give a better deal to the customer either by offering discounts or by giving an all in all customized package.

Besides the above points, people have also become more open minded in terms of exploring new places. They are willing to spend money and time to visit their favourite destination.

Lately, what we have seen that the trend a lot people travel alone and have started exploring new places. They stay with the locals of that particular place, eat what local people eat and explore the local area around. Due to this, they understand the local culture without spending too much money. Travelling to distant places makes people more independent also.

To sum up, we must all take out time to travel around different places big or small, luxurious or not and find our own space in this world.

Now, we will analyze the above IELTS writing task 1 response as below:

Introduction:

Paraphrasing is attempted

Corrected Erroneous Statement:

“Travelling has become more economical and easy today than compared to the older days. In the earlier period, making a travel plan itself used to be a tedious task as it was dependent on many factors such as setting up a budget, arrangement of various bookings and so on.”

Body Para 1

Reasons of travelling are given and extended well, and sentence connector (moreover) is used

Corrected Erroneous Statement:

“Today, people are travelling more than ever before due to easy connectivity and reach of distant places. Moreover, people have more flexible jobs. So, they can take out time from their busy lives and just spend weekends going to some nearby tourist places. Travelling has also become more affordable due to entry of many multinationals in the country and also mainly due to the reason of too much of competition. So, everyone tries to give a better deal to the customer either by offering discounts or by giving an “all in all” customized package.

Body Para 2

Good use of sentence connector (besides the above points) is there and there is no error of grammar, tense or sentence structure.

This para can be combined with the first para for proper formatting and paragraphing which can give better clarity to the reader.

Body Para 3

Sentence connectors (lately, due to this) are used

Writing impersonally like “we have seen” can be avoided and replaced with “it is seen”, “trend a lot people” should be “trend is that a lot of people”

Sentence connector (to sum up) is used and conclusive statement is given

“we must all take out time to travel” can be “people take out time”

Expected Band Score: Band 6.5

The candidate writes free from grammar, tense and other errors. However, there are some errors related to sentence structure that interferes in making the statement clear and effectiive, otherwise. it could be Band 7 task response.

Travelling Alone or in a Group Essay

Which option is better: traveling by yourself or with friends? This essay answers the question! It focuses on the benefits and drawbacks of solo travel.

Introduction

  • Pros & Cons of Solo Travel

Different people have different opinions regarding their travel arrangements. Whereas there are individuals who prefer to travel alone, on the other hand, others are more comfortable travelling in a group. Regardless of the option arrived at there are various advantages and disadvantages associated with either of the two options.

There is need therefore to explore whether it is better to travel alone or with a tour group. The essay shall endeavor to compare and contrast travelling alone with travelling in a group and uncover the benefits and drawbacks associated with both of these two forms of travelling.

Travelling Alone or in a Group: Pros & Cons

Traveling in a group allows one to meet new friends and exchange experiences. This helps to add fun to travelling because of the many new ideas that the individual members of the group comes with. In addition, diversity in terms of the experiences of the travelers enables one to appreciate their unique cultural heritage.

On the other hand, travelling in a group denies one the chance of being alone because you are always surrounded by other people. As such, one cannot avoid annoying travelers and you have to learn how to deal with them. In contrast, traveling alone gives one the freedom to explore new experiences without restrictions. As such, can do what pleases him/her without fear that others will criticize him/her.

Travelling in a group also limits one’s chances of meeting new people because it is far much easier to approach an individual as opposed to a group. Travelling alone enables one to become flexible in terms of for example how you spend your day, or what you eat. However, there is the danger of boredom and you have no one to share your experiences with.

Travelling in a group is also beneficial in that it allows you to lower your cost of travelling. This is because there is the possibility of sharing such facilities as the guest room, splitting food and drinks bills, and travelling costs as well. For example, it is much cheaper for a group of 5 travelers to split the traveling cost of hiring a cab, as opposed o a single traveler who would be expected to pay a similar amount for the same distance.

On the other hand, travelling in a group could result in an issue of conflict when it comes to the issue of offsetting bills. For example, some members of the group may decline to pay the stipulated amount of money because in their opinion, they have not incurred the costs that they are expected to foot. In addition, travelling in a group also denies one the flexibility of choosing for example where to stay or what to eat because you have to reach a compromise with the rest of the group.

Travelling in a group therefore puts one in danger of falling prey to a “herd” mentality whereby one ends up agreeing with the wishes of the majority as opposed to saying exactly what you want. On the other hand, travelling alone gives one the needed freedom to choose what he/she wants.

Moreover, traveling in a group allows one to enhance his/her communication and personal relations. Consequently, one gets to learn how best to get along with others, and this ensures that throughout the trip, you are never lost for company. In contrast, there are individuals who do not generally get along well with others and as such, they prefer to remain alone. They are therefore better off traveling alone to avoid straining their communication and personal relations.

Whether one is traveling alone or in a group, there are various advantages and disadvantages associated with each of the two travel arrangements. Regardless of the choice that an individual traveler makes, one should always ensure that they settle on the option that will result in the most fulfilling experience.

It is true that tours to remote and exotic places on the earth have gained popularity in recent years. While this has several benefits for the local community, I believe that overall the negative consequences are more significant.

[do_widget id=custom_html-24]

Admittedly, the growth of the tourism industry has brought enormous benefits to local people. More tourists mean greater demand for food, accommodation, and services, all of which create job opportunities and a lleviate unemployment in the area. The development of tourism also has ripple effects on local infrastructure , with more roads and bridges being built to meet tourists’ needs . This can be seen in the case of ABC, a coastal city, and also a tourist destination in [your country].

[do_widget id=custom_html-47]

The biggest disadvantage of the trend is, however, its adverse effects on the pristine environment and creatures living there. Forests may be cut down to make way for resorts and hotels; marine life might be threatened due to water pollution, and birds have to find other places to inhabit . In some places, waste from the hotel industry is becoming an environmental problem that concerns many people, not just environmentalists. Another drawback is that increased tourism may break social cohesion in the local community. Many people make a living by providing services for travelers and become rich while many others remain poor and struggle for the next meal. This wealth gap is gradually widening and has detrimental impacts on the bond and the shared values of indigenous individuals.

In conclusion, although the growth of tourism to remote areas and exotic countries is beneficial to some extent, it is more likely to have harmful impacts on local people and the environment.

It is evidently being seen that the tourism and travel industry has been propped in the wake of infrastructural development. It has inevitably impacted the local geographical condition and the ambience thereof. In my opinion, it has been causing a progressive effect on the environment. In the paragraphs to follow, this essay will talk about the reasons for this.

As the routes and links to the interiors of the far-flung regions have been ameliorated and well-structured, the economic aspect related to it has been in full swing. A mammoth of growth in the terms of the economy has been clearly evinced, with respect to, a major footfall of the travellers all around, catapulting the employment opportunities in the remote regions. It thus has opened the avenues of food shops and stores, hospitality subset, transport arena and so on and so forth. In the deprived wildernesses of umpteen places, for instance, a total revamps and tweaking of the terrain is seen more often than not, thereby needing the human resource for it and eradicating destitution owing to a paucity of wages due to lack of or no work.

Additionally, the disordered and mismanaged natural resources have been able to be utilized and exacted the benefit out of, in the most optimal way, which was not the case prior to the advancing strides made in the travel domain. From the community point of view as well, which were hardly known and cognized to have existed, let alone their acknowledgement, have been brought to the mainstream attention and hence have added to the cultural opulence of the society, as a whole.

Though the side effects of this proliferation in the purview of environmental degradation have been seen as well, with proper protocols and precautionary standards, it could be significantly palliated. However, this couldn’t asphyxiate the growth in the mileage of the journey of progression.

Conclusively, it could be said that the strides of tourism to the remote communities and areas have helped the demography and geography of the people therein and hence, a fairly positive development.

The community tourism is increasingly favoured by most people as the principal tourist attraction in the view of many such organized trips are offered to them. Regarding the tour, the remote community travel has both positive and negative consequences on the local people within their vicinity. Concerning the dilemma, I would be more inclined to support the opportunistic side of local community tourism.

Firstly, the striking point is promotion of remote community travel enables local people to preserve their exotic and pristine environment. Recently, there is surged popularity in organising eco-tourism trip is due to people tend to have short escape from reality. In fact, majority of the citizens are weary about the daily hectic and bustling urban lifestyles. A short getaway trip to remote area in turn will enable them to unwind themselves via viewing the authentic greenery scene. Moreover, as the gradual diminishment of natural habitat progresses, the eco-site attraction brings invaluable experience to the tourists. Thus, the city dwellers can witness the original habitat of flora and fauna which unlock their unprecedented and unique experience with the nature.

The second advantage is the enabler for the room of potential to stimulate local economy. The vast number of community travel provides multitude of incentives to urban dwellers to generate substantial earnings by selling local products such as home-grown nourishments and souvenirs. Apart from selling their products, the commercialisation of the local site visit provides them gargantuan amount of revenues through the admission tickets are being sold. Therefore, the overall earning capacity of the local residents rise dramatically and benefit the community development as a whole. The rise in earnings allow more the local people to contribute to environmental preservation to remain as aesthetic tourist attraction in attracting more travellers.

In a nutshell, strides of community trips have brought lots of benefits to local environment besides preserving environmental climate. Pertaining to effectiveness of remote tourism, the eco-travel industry should be main area of focus on lifting up the local economy.

Visitors love to visit rarely known places and are enthusiastic about knowing the culture of distinct tribes and countries. I believe this is a positive development.

First and foremost, tourists will encourage local people to preserve their culture. In other words, it is inevitable that cultures and old customs are fading away and foreigners’ visits may work as a motivation for locals to hold their customs tightly. Secondly, natives may be proud of the customs, which previously were a source of embarrassment, because when visitors show excitement about that country’s culture, natives may start to follow their cultures again, which once diminishes in the name of modern living. For example, several communities have special dresses, which are becoming a thing of the past, but tourists might keep them alive. Therefore tours to remote communities will do good but harm.

When people from different countries travel through various countries, they will spread rare and beautiful anecdotes and cultures around the world. Furthermore, tourism also provides financial aid and creates employment. For instance, many poor countries that do not have many resources but beautiful places and rich cultures, depend on tourism economically. Meanwhile, this is indirectly beneficial for the environment also. As in order to preserve mesmerizing natural sites, governments try to minimise carbon footprint. Take Bhutan, for instance, which has a law that 60% of the land will be allocated for the forest, which makes this country carbon negative.

To conclude, I think trips to remote culturally rich areas bring several benefits and create an ambience of respecting each other’s customs and rituals.

Offbeat destinations are becoming quite popular these days. People are craving to unravel these so called untouched and remote places and hence the tourism industry off late is organising tours to such destinations.

Such a development has its pluses and minuses. In this essay, I shall dwell upon the positive aspects of the tourism industry which is seeking and reaching out to such remote countries and their communities and shall also discuss some of its demerits.

Firstly speaking of the benefits such far off places where not on the tourist map earlier. However recent shift in interests of people to venture to such remote locations and interact with the local communities has given the industry and also these communities the much need fillip. With more and more people visiting these nations, more source of income in the form of home stays have opened up. Employment of the local youth as guides has also given them adequate job opportunities. Overall, there has been considerable influx of money to these otherwise neglected countries.

However on the other hand if we see, such developments have also brought in a lot of vices. More tourists mean more pollution and thus posing greater danger to the fragile biodiversity. Another aspect is the conversion of farmlands to hotels to cater for the huge number of tourists visiting these countries. The local communities are also clearing forest lands to give way to development of infrastructure for the tourists.

Thus to conclude, I would say that the development of tourism industry in remote countries and reaching out to such remote communities is surely a welcome step but it must be done with a sense of responsibilty without hampering the environment or posing a threat to the development of the local people.

Ielts writing task 2 – traveling in a group.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The best way to travel is in a group led by a tour guide. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

( 272 Words , 18 Sentences, 4 Paragraphs, Band 9)

Traveling is the best way to relax, leave one’s troubles behind and enjoy the beautiful moments. Some people prefer to travel alone. However, other people prefer to take a tour. I think that these options have their own benefits. In the following paragraphs I will give my reasons to support my answer.

First of all, traveling in a group led by a tour guide gives one the opportunity to meet new people, communicate, have a great time in the company. Second of all, one does not have to spend his time looking for historical places that he wants to visit. A professional guide leads group from one place to another. Also, it is very interesting to hear from a guide about historical events that took places there. In addition to these benefits a group led by a tour guide does not feel uncomfortable because of a foreign language. All the tourists need they can ask their tour guide. So, this allows to avoid difficulties to communicate with dwellers of that country.

From the other hand, sometimes people like to explore countries without the help of a guide. They like to make their own discoveries, be independent, feel freedom and stay in one town as long as they need. Personally, I think it is a great feeling. Sometimes I want to be alone to contemplate about my life, to forget all troubles that bother me and just relax.

To sum up, I believe that it is really up to a person how he or she prefers to travel. Some people even like to alternate traveling alone with traveling in a group led by a tour guide.

( NB: Follow the above writing structure for getting higher IELTS band score in the examination. This sample answer can be an example of good writing out of many possible approaches.)

Travel | IELTS Speaking Part 1 Questions with Sample Answers

In this post, you will see one of the most common IELTS speaking topics ( travel)  and sample answers.

Please remember that in the actual test you should give honest answers and talk about your own experiences, thoughts, feelings and opinions.  Do not  try to memorise answers , as the examiners will probably be able to guess and you will lose marks.

However, you are able to make up information to extend your answers, but be sure that you are confident  when speaking about the chosen topic and that it is believable.

TIP >>  Each answer should be at least 2-3 sentences long.

TIP >>  Listen carefully to the question so that you answer in the correct tense.

TIP >>  When answering a yes/no question  – answer then give your reasons for your answer. You must extend your answer to gain more marks.

TIP >>  Just relax and think of it as a regular conversation you are having, make eye contact and be positive.

Take a look at the questions and sample answers  below on the topic of ‘travel ‘ >>

Q: What do you do on your vacation?

A: Depending on the location when I go on holiday I like to relax, see the sights and take photographs. I also like to go shopping, visit museums and galleries. I am very interested in art and architecture, so love to see as much as I can when I go on holiday.

Q: Do you think vacations are becoming more and more important?

A: Yes, I think that many people are working longer hours and have more stress than ever placed upon them. taking a break is necessary to unwind and recharge so that they can let go of the stress and focus on their own well-being.

Q: What kind of places do you want to travel to?

A: I really want to visit the USA more and explore cities like New York, Chicago and Boston. I would also like to visit Canada to go skiing and perhaps in the spring to visit Italy, to see some galleries.

Q: Do you prefer travelling alone or in a group?

A: I prefer to travel in a group, as I think it is more fun being able to share experiences with friends or family. Travelling alone is not always safe and in some places could be very risky.

Q: Who do you usually spend your vacation with?

A: I always go on vacation with my husband, we travel a lot mainly around Greece either to the mainland or to other islands. We also like to visit cities like London, Barcelona, Rome and New York to experience various cultures.

Q: Why are vacations important to you?

A: They are much needed during certain times of the year, for example when the weather becomes too hot to bear or I feel as though I need a break from work. They help me to relax and de-stress from everything.

Q: If you could take a vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?

A: I would like to visit a pretty place with snow, lots and lots of snow, somewhere like Canada or maybe even in the mountains in Greece during the winter months. I would like to go skiing, try snowboarding and stay in a well-decorated log cabin, with a large real fireplace.

Today More People Are Traveling Than Before

Sample essay

Each year, millions of people visit other countries and spend their leisure time there. Actually, the number of travelers is growing year after year. There are many reasons behind this trend and the most important among them is the rise in the income and living standards of people.

People are traveling because they can afford it. Thanks to advances in technology, air travel has become considerably cheap; as a result, more and more people can visit foreign countries. In addition, people have become more curious. They read about foreign countries on the internet and watch programmes on television. This exposure makes them want to visit those countries so that they can experience everything first hand. They want to taste exotic dishes they have never eaten before and celebrate unique and colourful festivals they have only seen on TV. Traveling, after all, is the best way to learn and discover new things.

Traveling benefits people in many ways. To start with, it is a good way for people to learn about the world. When they travel they get exposed to various cultures. They get to learn new languages and interact with new and interesting people. This exposure makes them tolerant and enhances their world view. Take myself as an example. I have been in France for a year as an exchange student. During this period, I have learned a great deal about the French culture. For instance, I have visited lots of museums and galleries in Paris and as a result, I now appreciate beauty in a more sensitive way. In addition, I have become more appreciative of differences. I now understand that customs, traditions, languages and skin colour are all unique to a country and need to be respected. In short, my travels have made me a better and more tolerant person. Every traveler has similar stories to share.

To conclude, more and more people are traveling because of their natural curiosity and also because they can afford it. In my opinion, this is a positive development because it promotes learning and understanding.

Talking about Holidays and Travel for IELTS

Posted by David S. Wills | Jan 23, 2018 | IELTS Tips , Speaking | 1

Talking about Holidays and Travel for IELTS

Hello, readers! Sorry for not posting so much lately. For the past week and a half I have been travelling in India as it is currently my winter holiday. I will continue to travel for the next few weeks before I return to work. You can read some stories from my travels at my personal blog .

So today, let’s talk about holidays and IELTS!

The topic of holidays and travel can come up often in the IELTS exam. For example, in the listening exam you might have to listen to someone inquiring about plane or train tickets on the phone. In the writing exam you might have to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of international travel. And so on…

Today, though, we’re going to focus on speaking. Travel/holidays can appear in any part of the speaking exam. As you would expect, in part one the questions will be short and simple and very general. In part two you’ll have to speak for a minute or two describing something. Then, in part three, you’ll get more complex questions that may relate to society or gender or other difficult issues.

Q: Do you like travelling?

A: Yes, I love travelling. Every time that I get the chance, I go somewhere new.

Q: What do you usually do on holiday?

A: I like to do many different things, like spend time on the beach, go hiking in the mountains, or visit some sites of cultural or historical importance.

Q: When do you usually go on holiday?

A: Well, I’m working right now so I go on holiday when I get time off work. For me, that’s in the summer and winter vacation, as well as national holidays.

Here’s the cue card:

Describe a place you once visited. You should say:

  • When you visited it
  • Where is it situated
  • Who you went with

and say what about it you like the most

This is my sample answer, with useful language underlined:

A leopard in Sri Lanka Last year, during the winter holiday, I visited Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a small island nation in the Indian Ocean, not far from India. I booked tickets there because it was one of the few remaining countries in Asia that I hadn’t yet seen. As usual, I travelled there alone. I often travel this way because it allows me a large degree of freedom in my planning. I arrived in the country with no itinerary except just the idea to explore. So I flew into the capital city of Colombo and then travelled by public bus in a circle around much of the southern part of the country. Sri Lanka is a really amazing country and I enjoyed the culture, the food, and the environment. Some of my favourite memories are of hiking through the hills near Ella after a delicious Sri Lankan breakfast and a pot of famous Ceylon tea. However, my absolute best experience was seeing a leopard at Yalla National Park. These elusive creatures are fascinating to me, and I was incredibly fortunate to see one during my safari.

Q: Why do you think some people prefer travelling in large groups?

A: I think that for some people the idea of travelling alone or with just a small group is intimidating. They feel that it is too difficult or dangerous, and so they travel with a pre-arranged tour group. This makes their journey simpler and safer.

Q: Do you think that travelling is more difficult for women than for men?

A: Unfortunately, yes. There are many parts of the world where it is unsafe for women to travel alone. Women also have to take into consideration local cultural norms that govern their behavior, whereas men often have much more freedom to do as they please.

Q: How will tourism develop in future?

A: It is hard to say for sure, but it seems likely that more and more people will travel the globe. They may even begin to travel beyond this world into outer space as technology develops. You could see people travelling under the sea or into the skies in special new vehicles or accommodations.
