The Backstory of the Shaman of Songs Animatronic in Na’vi River Journey

The Na’vi River Journey in Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened as part of the massive expansion known as Pandora – The World of Avatar. While this is not the big attraction of the area – that spot is held by Flight of Passage – it commands long lines and rightfully so.

Na’vi River Journey is a four and a half minute dark boat ride, which is pretty classic for Disney, but the rest is totally different. The boat sails through a Pandoran jungle at nighttime while bioluminescent plants glow all around. Exotic animals leap and play on semi-transparent projection screens so you can see everything going on in the foreground and the background. The whole experience feels very lifelike.

Enjoy the bioluminescent forest and exotic animals in the Na'vi River Journey.

Shaman of Songs

One of the coolest thing in all of the attraction though is the Shaman of Songs. This robotic Na’vi shaman can be found at the very end of the ride. She is one of the most technologically sophisticated audio-animatronics, for lack of a better word, that Disney has ever created. The original animatronics , like President Lincoln and the birds in the Enchanted Tiki Room , used pneumatic movements triggered by pre-recorded sounds. The Shaman uses state of the art technology like servos and electronics to create very fluid, lifelike movements.

The Shaman is very lifelike. Photo credits (C) Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Disney Imagineer s they developed at least 20 new technologies that never existed before to make the Shaman do what they wanted and needed her to do. The Shaman of Songs combines art and technology to create a brand new aesthetic. Even from just a few feet away, she has impressive detail.

The Shaman Story

The story goes that the Shaman has a deep connection to the life force of Pandora and celebrates this connection and spreads positive energy through her music. Here are the lyrics to her song first in Pandoran language, which was created by Dr. Paul Frommer, then translated into English.

Na’rìng alor, Mì Na’rìng lu tsngawpay. Atokirina’. Awnga leym, lereym san, Ma Eywa (3X). ’Awstengyawnem, Ma Sa’nok aNawm. Atokirina’. Awnga leym, lereym san, Ma Eywa (3X). Tìnewfa leNa’vi, Na’rìng tìng lawr. Atokirina’. Awnga leym, lereym san, Ma Eywa (3X).

Got that?  Yea, me neither.  Here is the English translation.

O beautiful forest, There are tears in the forest. Woodsprite(s). We cry out, calling, “O Eywa!” (3X) Connected as one, O Great Mother. Woodsprite(s). We cry out, calling, “O Eywa!” (3X) By the People’s will, the forest is singing. Woodsprite(s). We cry out, calling, “O Eywa!” (3X)

Admittedly, it seems a little strange for Disney to make such a huge bet on a story like Avatar considering that there’s only one movie out right now. It’s true that this movie was one of the most successful in history.  Another one is coming out in soon, plus plans for three more after that through the year 2025.  However, some people wonder if it will be enough to give Pandora the staying power that other stories have.

Five Things to Know About Na’vi River Journey

The Na’vi River Journey is a slow-moving dark boat ride through Pandora’s bioluminescent rainforest. You’ll float past Pandora’s exotic animals and glowing plants on your way to the Shaman of Songs. Read on to learn more, or if you’d rather bypass the trip and float on down to the nuts and bolts, here’s your shortcut .

1. You follow the queue to where the River flows.

The queue for Na’vi River Journey consists of two parts: an exterior portion of the queue, and an interior portion. The exterior portion takes you on a winding path through the exotic and alien landscape of Pandora.

The interior portion is covered, but not enclosed, and looks as if it had been built by the Na’vi. You’ll see their handiwork everywhere, including totems. From the light fixtures to the poles along the switchback, you’ll think it was fashioned completely from natural materials. While not as detailed as the other Pandora attraction, Flight of Passage, this has the characteristic attention to detail that Disney’s Imagineers are renowned for.

river journey song lyrics

2. You’ll board the boat and start to float.

The ride itself is a 5-minute slow-moving journey through the wildly colorful and beautifully illuminated jungle of Pandora. A gentle ride, there are no sudden drops or unexpected jerky movements. You’re floating, and your attention should be focused on the amazing scenery as you head toward the ride’s conclusion. To be honest, there’s not much of a plot. The good news is that the scenery is so stunning that there doesn’t need to be one. It’s worth mentioning the ride vehicles here. They appear to be two small, hand-hewn rafts joined together. This is another nod to authenticity and is in keeping with the technology familiar to the Na’vi.

3. The effects are super-cool and super-clever.

You’ll head into the nighttime jungle, past glowing plants and exotic animals. To create these, Disney has used traditional 3-D sets for the flora, coupled with video screens that show the movement of the fauna. But here’s what makes an impressive difference: the video screens are semi-transparent. Behind them are more screens with background scenes that are also moving. This creates a remarkable effect: allowing you to see the action in the foreground and background simultaneously, all surrounded by densely packed landscaping.

river journey song lyrics

Also along the way, the Imagineers have employed video projection mapping like that used in the Magic Kingdom’s nighttime show Happily Ever After. Here it’s used to project three-dimensional bugs crawling on tree trunks in one of the ride’s middle scenes to remarkable effect. The ride’s music becomes louder and more distinct as you continue, all of which leads up to when…

4. You’ll see – and hear – the Shaman of Songs.

Floating along -to the ride’s end, you encounter a Na’vi tribe with their direhorses walking to a great ceremonial site. Here you’ll see one of the most remarkable audio-animatronics Disney’s Imagineers have ever created: the Shaman of Songs. This is where the lack of storytelling in the rest of the ride might be considered a problem by some. You go in not knowing anything about the character, and not enough story unfolds during the ride to get you excited about meeting the Shaman.

river journey song lyrics

The Shaman is almost 10 feet tall – although she’s sitting, so it’s hard to tell. It’s thought that Disney spent nearly $23 million to construct this figure – which shows! The Shaman’s gestures are totally realistic; her arms move with astonishing grace. As she sings (a little off-key, to be honest, which only adds to the realism) and plays the various instruments around her, her eye contact and fluid motions are among the best the Imagineers have ever constructed. Disney says that the Shaman “demonstrates her deep connection to the life force of Pandora—and sends positive energy out into the forest through the power of her music.” Her song is entitled, The Shaman’s Song (Na’vi: Way Tiretuä), and the lyrics were provided by Paul Frommer, who created the Na’vi language for the Avatar films.

5. The Nuts and Bolts.

Na’vi River Journey is located in Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park. Since a portion of the queue is outdoors and the main queue is only covered and not indoors, the weather can be a problem. But Na’vi River Journey itself is indoors and out of the elements, so weather doesn’t affect the operation of this attraction.

As mentioned above, the Na’vi River Journey ride vehicles are boats that look as if they’ve been handcrafted out of reeds or grasses. The benches themselves are hard plastic. Each has two rows and can comfortably seat about two to three adults per row.

river journey song lyrics

There is a moderate step over the boat wall and then a moderate step into the boat. Guests must transfer from a wheelchair/ECV in order to board. Because this is such a gentle ride experience, there are no health or safety advisories for Na’vi River Journey. And there are no height restrictions. Handheld Captioning and Audio Description are available, making this a ride everyone can enjoy.

Na’vi River Journey is open for Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Theme Park Hours. It’s a popular attraction and first thing in the morning or right before closing are when wait times are the shortest. We don’t think that it’s worth waiting longer than 30 minutes (the queue only has enough shade to cover maybe 30 minutes’ worth of guests). Alternatively, you can secure a Lightning Lane via Genie+.

The Bottom Line.

If you’re a fan of the Avatar movies, you’ll find Na’vi River Journey an enjoyable, if not remarkable, 5-minute trip. If you’re not a fan of the franchise, the storyline may not resonate with you enough for this attraction to make your “must-do” list but the scenery is stunning enough that you won’t be sorry you rode it once. Either way, it’s an amazing exhibition of the ability of the Imagineers to bring a fantastic fictional place into existence.

What happened to the Shaman?

I think the River Journey is a great addition to Animal Kingdom. It’s a feast for the eyes and sometimes on a long, hot that’s just what the family needs!

21 Best Songs About Rivers

best songs about rivers of all time playlist feature

Rivers can represent all manner of things in songs. Rivers are a body of water that can connect towns along its path, so to some, a river can represent travel. In some cases, its running water can conjure up thoughts of tranquility. In some songs, a river’s dark depths and the secrets it may cover help create a sense of foreboding.

With such vast and disparate takes on what a river manifests in the mind, it is no surprise that there are so many types of songs that use a rivers as a central motif. Here are the songs about rivers that we say are the best:

1. “Take Me To The River” by Talking Heads

Take Me to the River (2005 Remaster)

This song, written by Al Green during three days in a rented house in Arkansas, came to be when tasked to come up with some new material. While there is no doubt that Mr. Green created a soulful classic in that house, his version of the tune is not the definitive one. There is something about the version that Talking Heads released in 1978 that simply made it theirs. At least, it feels as much theirs as it does Reverend Green’s.

Next: The top 70s songs (1970s hit classic tracks)

2. “Down By The River” by Neil Young

Down by the River (2009 Remaster)

With a nod to Southern Gothic writers like Flannery O’Connor and William Faulkner, Neil Young’s ten-minute opus relays a dark tale of the murdering of a lover down by the river. Such subject matter should not be so stirring, but somehow ‘ol Neil pulls it off. He also somehow makes just playing one note for the first minute of his guitar solo work too.

Next: The best songs about death of all time (a list of our picks)

3. “Proud Mary” by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Creedence Clearwater Revival: Proud Mary

This one needs no explanation. Next time you are around a campfire with some friends, pull out an acoustic guitar and give this one a sing. Everybody around that fire is going to be singing along about rolling down the river along with you. There is also an incredible version of this song by Ike & Tina Turner, but the original is still the best.

4. “River” by Joni Mitchell

Joni Mitchell - River (Official Music Video)

Not only is this one of the best songs about rivers, it is also probably the saddest Christmas-related song of all time. The song begins with a lightly tinkled piano playing the melody to ‘Jingle Bells’ and then goes on to pummel you emotionally with a song about everyone else around having a great time at Christmas and being so lonely after making your lover say goodbye. Joni just wants a river that she can skate away on and if you listen to this song in a certain frame of mind, you are going to want one as well.

Next: The best songs about loneliness ever made (a list of our absolute favs)

5. “River Of Dreams” by Billy Joel

Billy Joel - The River of Dreams (Official HD Video)

A hit song for Billy Joel off of his album of the same name, this upbeat tune marries gospel and doo-wop to lyrics that speak of a search for something sacred in life. Sometimes we all feel like we are on the search for something it feels like we have lost, but Mr. Joel makes that search sound like an uplifting experience.

Next: The best gospel songs of all time (a list of our favs)

6. “Cry Me A River” by Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake - Cry Me A River (Official Video)

It was a bold move to have a song with this title and it not even be a cover of the original, but a whole new song altogether. JT was full of bold choices, however, in his first solo outing after NSYNC . The song was believed, upon its release, to be about the dissolution of his relationship with Britney Spears . This was capitalized on by the inclusion of a Spears look-alike in the song’s very popular music video. Over the years, it has now become just as likely that one might associate the song title with Timberlake as with the Julie London classic. We say that’s a score for Justin.

Next: The best breakup songs of all time (a list of our absolute favorites)

7. “Down By The Water” by PJ Harvey

PJ Harvey - Down By The Water

The biggest hit by PJ Harvey during the Alternative Nation years of the 90s, this song is so tied to the era that it’s repurposed recently in many throwback films and television programs as a shorthand signifier for the period. One such instance is in the 90s-set show ‘Yellowjackets’, starring Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci.

Next: The best 90s songs (our list of 1990s favorite hits)

8. “Dam That River” by Alice In Chains

Dam That River (2022 Remaster)

Alice In Chains are one of the biggest names associated with grunge and this is the second track off of their biggest album ‘Dirt’. The album is quite possibly the darkest album to ever hit #1 on the Billboard charts. The song was apparently inspired by an incident when Alice’s drummer Sean Kinney broke a coffee table over Jerry Cantrell’s head . Jerry then wrote the song once things had cooled down.

9. “Moon River” by Andy Williams

Moon River - Andy Williams

This song appeared first in ‘Breakfast At Tiffany’s’, sung by none other than Audrey Hepburn. It has since been recorded countless times by an endless number of artists but is most closely associated with Andy Williams and thought of as his signature song. You have likely heard this song in an elevator or have seen an album with it as part of an estate sale’s old record collection.

Next: The best cover songs of all time (a list of our favs)

10. “Yes, The River Knows” by The Doors

Yes, the River Knows

A bit of an oddity in The Doors early oeuvre, this song from their album ‘Waiting For The Sun’ gave more of a nod to lounge and cocktail-jazz than the rebel rock that was their calling card.

Next: The top songs about waiting for something or someone

11. “Many Rivers To Cross” by Jimmy Cliff

Jimmy Cliff - Many Rivers To Cross (Lyrics on screen)

Written by Jimmy Cliff about his struggle to find musical success in England after early acclaim in Jamaica, this song has come to represent for most the concept of struggle, in general. It is one of the key tracks off of Jimmy Cliff’s much-heralded soundtrack album for the film ‘The Harder They Come’

Next: The best reggae songs of all time (a list of our favs)

12. “I Am A River” by Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters - I Am A River

Dave Grohl, the wildly popular rock star, wrote this song about the Minetta Creek that flows underneath Manhattan. His idea was that it was a beautiful thought to imagine something prehistoric and natural that flowed under the man-made splendor of New York City, connecting all its residents. There are bigger Foo Fighters songs out there, but this is their tip of the cap to the people of the Big Apple.

Next: The best songs about New York of all time (our list)

13. “River” by Eminem

Eminem - River (Audio) ft. Ed Sheeran

This track, off of Eminem’s album ‘Revival’, featured Ed Sheeran and was the unexpected collaboration that we didn’t know we needed. It deals with the fallout of being part of a not-exactly-just-one-time infidelity and letting the consequences of such just run like a river.

14. “The River” by Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen - The River

This harrowing song perfectly captures the feeling of fading dreams and dashed hopes. In it, young lovers hopes for the future that they share with each other during their romantic trips to the river are squandered by an unplanned pregnancy. From there comes a shotgun wedding, a union card, and a lot of questions about what could have been. For an incredible live version of the song, look for video footage of the first time Springsteen performed it in public at Madison Square Garden during the No Nukes concert in 1979.

15. “River Song” by Dennis Wilson

Dennis Wilson - River Song

A rousing song off of Dennis Wilson’s solo album gem ‘Pacific Ocean Blue’ showed that Brian wasn’t the only Beach Boy with a boatload of talent. In it, Dennis sings about wanting to escape the troubles of the city life and run free like the river he walks alongside. The song and the album showed great promise for Dennis’s solo career. Sadly, this was not to be, as ‘Pacific Ocean Blue’ was his only solo album released in his lifetime.

16. “London Calling” by The Clash

The Clash - London Calling (Official Video)

The title song off of the album of the same name, which many consider to be the best LP by The Clash, is a real barnburner. It deals with many topics, one of which is the concern that if the River Thames flooded, all those that lived along the river would drown. The song even ends with the Morse code signal for S-O-S, further cementing the tune’s apocalyptic tone.

17. “Cry Me A River” by Julie London

Cry Me A River

Julie London’s signature tune, in which she tells her lover to cry her a river since she has already cried a river over him, can be seen as a tearjerker or a song of empowerment. A wonderful clip can be found online of an apparition of Julie singing the song in the 50s film ‘The Girl Can’t Help It’. An unrelated song with the same title became a massive hit for Justin Timberlake in the early 2000s and has also made it on this list.

Next: The best songs about women empowerment of all time (our list of favs)

18. “Ferry Cross The Mersey” by Gerry & The Pacemakers

Gerry & The Pacemakers - Ferry Cross The Mersey (1965)

This classic 60s song by Gerry & The Pacemakers was an ode to the River Mersey of Northern England. A ferry ran along the Mersey, connecting Liverpool to the Irish Sea. This area became synonymous with the Merseybeat sound, a mix of rock and roll and skiffle. Bands like Gerry & The Pacemakers as well as early songs by The Beatles are associated with the style.

19. “Ol Man River” by Sam Cooke

Sam Cooke Ol' Man River

There are many versions of this song, but how can you not decide its best version was from Sam Cooke? The man turned every song he touched into pure honey. This standard was originally composed by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II for the 1927 musical ‘Show Boat’. This song contrasts the turbulence of life’s plight and struggle with the oblivious Mississippi River that just continues to roll along.

20. “Just Around The Riverbend” by Judy Kuhn

Just Around the Riverbend

From the Disney film ‘Pocahontas’ , this song deals with the protagonist’s desire for something beyond the safe choice for her life’s direction when the potential for adventure is “just around the riverbend”. Second only to ‘Colors Of The Wind’, ‘Just Around The Riverbend’ is one of the most beloved songs from the mid-90s animated film.

Next: The best Disney songs of all time (a list of our absolute favs)

21. “Ode To Billie Joe” by Bobbie Gentry

Ode To Billie Joe

An all-time country music classic, this song is a first-person narration where the singer is discussing someone’s suicide that she is connected to. The song deals with the indifference of the singer’s family when they hear the news of the death. During the height of the song’s popularity, there was much speculation over just what the narrator and Billie Joe threw over the Tallahatchie Bridge. To this day, the mystery remains.

Catching up with Ma Lo Ma, the Coke Studio Bangla song ruling your Instagram Reels

Coke studio bangla's "ma lo ma" is a song about inevitable transitions of life and not just bangladesh, the world is catching up to it..

Listen to Story

river journey song lyrics

There are songs that make you fall in love and then there are others that give you motivation. There are ghazals that make you yearn for your lost love, and then, of course, the jazz that makes you want to dance the night away. But how many songs actually make you want to ponder your life’s choices, the journey of life and the dualities of adulthood?

Coke Studio Bangla Season 3 has released its second song "Ma Lo Ma" which has kind of caught up with music enthusiasts across borders. With the rap and folklore brought together in the Bangladeshi song, it is a perfect example of modernity meets tradition.

Listen to the song here:

Produced by Shayan Chowdhury Arnob, “Ma Lo Ma” is sung by Pritom Hasan, Shagor Dewan and Arif Dewan. It is Shagor and Arif’s ancestors who were the original writers of the song “Ma Lo Ma Jhi Lo Jhi”.

They are fourth-generation singers and are synonymous with the folk song genre pala gaan (old performative form that involves the reciting and singing of long narrative oral verses accompanied by mimetic gestures ) .

The brilliant rap, on the other hand, which adds a modern edge to the song, has been done by Aly Hasan.

river journey song lyrics

Ma Lo Ma: What does it mean?

The song starts with the chorus sung by Arif Dewan which goes like this –

Ma lo ma, jhi lo jhi

This translates to: Mother, O mother, Daughter, O Daughter

Boin lo boin, ami korlam ki

This translates to: Sister, O sister, see what I have done here!

Ronge bhanga nouka

This translates to: Just playfully I came to row

Baite anlam gange

This translates to: A broken boat in this riverway

This folk fusion song beautifully captures the journey of life, using powerful metaphors like a broken boat representing life's challenges while river symbolises the world. Through these images, the song explores themes of personal growth and discovery, offering a reflection on the inevitable life changes.

According to the description on YouTube:

“#MALOMA embodies the realisation that life is a journey where the inevitability of adulting and nostalgia work as two sides of a coin. As we grow up, there comes a time echoing the question: 'What am I doing here?' But within this very questioning lies the potential for a beautiful transformation, a self-acceptance that allows us to bloom even in the most demanding seasons. This folk fusion song serves as a conversation acknowledging this inevitable shift, using the metaphor of a broken boat symbolising life and a river symbolising the world.”

There’s another poignant part which evokes nostalgia about our own childhood when singer Shagor Dewan reminisces about his days as a child.

Chilam shishu chilam bhalo

This translates to: I was a child, I was good

Naa chilo shongsharer jala

This translates to : There was no family pressure

Sadai thakitam maa-er shonge

This translates to: I used to be with my mother always

Amar dehete ailo juwani

This translates to: And then, adulthood hit

These lyrics resonate with everyone. As children, we have nothing to worry about, and our world revolves around our mother's protection. However, inevitably, we must step out of that sheltered environment and confront the real world's hardships. This song eloquently captures life's transitions, both universal and personal, in various phases.

The composition gains depth from the infusion of "Chaad Petano Gaan," a form of Shaari Gaan rooted in folk traditions dating back to the Mughal Era. It was later adopted by labourers and building masons working in the urban landscape during the 80s and 90s. The unique musical style merges rhythm and melody with the labourers' toilsome work.
