One Way to Deal With Someone on A Power Trip

Hint: many who throw their weight around don’t feel all that powerful..

Sure, there are people out there who like to use power to control other people—that’s pretty much the definition of a power trip. But is your boss, coworker, ex-friend, or estranged relative really one of them?

Not necessarily.

Not everybody who seems to be on a power trip actually is. Even the most controlling, domineering person in your life may simply be… protecting herself.

Self-protection isn’t the only alternative explanation for an apparent power trip. But it’s one that’s often overlooked.

If you can spot self-protection in action, you’re more likely to respond effectively and even potentially help the person heal.

The Power of Self-Protection

Most of us, if we’ve been hurt badly enough in the past, will prioritize doing whatever it takes to stay emotionally and physically safe.

Some of the behaviors we use as a shield can easily be mistaken for something more aggressive. Here are just a few examples:

  • Dictating the details of how things play out to make sure we don’t get hurt again
  • Requiring lots of information upfront before we agree to do things
  • Changing our minds after agreeing to something that makes us nervous
  • Reducing or eliminating contact with people who feel dangerous

All of these behaviors can come across as power-tripping. But self-protection is not about enjoying power; it’s about trying to ensure safety.

Sometimes, self-protection requires us to remove ourselves from certain relationships. There are various ways of doing this, ranging from “ ghosting ” (disappearing without explanation) to having a respectful conversation in which we clearly state our needs and boundaries in a way that others can choose to act on, or not, with the understanding that we hope they’ll be able to do so.

Mostly, when we’re in self-defense mode, we’re not especially polite. We might come across as unreasonable, stubborn, or even aggressive.

Think about it: If you’re at a backyard barbecue, and your shorts catch fire, you’re going to make a beeline for the swimming pool without concern for whose Coke you knock over. While you’re dashing to the pool, your only thought is for your own safety.

Even if we don’t feel especially powerful, our self-protection can make us look like power-hungry control freaks.

Refusing to return someone’s phone call, from their point of view, is just rude. Even if the truth is we’re scared of what might happen if we talk to them.

Leaving relationships, or acting inconsistently within them because of our own ambivalence, can come across as a power trip because we’re controlling the contact schedule. Sometimes we’re available; other times, we’re not. We decide from moment to moment what we can tolerate.

To the person on the receiving end, we’re just messing with them.

How to Respond

If you’re on the other side, looking at someone who appears to be on a power trip, there are some questions you might consider. To your knowledge…

Has that person experienced physical harm, emotional pain, or deep disappointment in relationships?

How secure does he seem, in general? How’s his overall self-image ?

Is it possible that the “power trip” is really just a need for safety?

If the relationship is important to you, don’t skip over self-protection as a possible explanation for behavior that appears power-driven.

If it might be the case that the person is protecting himself, how can you help him feel safer, especially in the relationship you share?

Here are a few ways to provide safety for people who’ve been hurt and/or traumatized in relationships:

  • Ask permission. Ask about timing, locations, activities, topics that are OK to discuss… anything that the person seems anxious to control. These are important to her, so let her decide what feels OK.
  • Offer choices. Same as above, and let the person know you’re open to hearing her ideas and preferences. Respect her choices, as long as they don’t directly violate your personal boundaries.
  • Don’t push. Fear of being dominated often goes hand in hand with concerns about safety. Never try to coerce someone who’s been traumatized into doing what you want them to do.
  • Be patient. Intrusive self-protective behaviors stem from past harm, not malice. People need time, understanding, and acceptance in order to heal.

These behaviors represent the opposite of what most of us feel like doing when someone is throwing their weight around. It’s human nature to want to push back against anything that feels like an inappropriate power-grab.

So if the relationship is not that important to you, you may choose simply not to deal with someone who seems to be on a power trip.

But now that you know it could be something deeper, you can make an informed choice about your own response.

For the surviving members of metal band Power Trip, the Grammys are a bittersweet coda

On Monday night, just a few weeks after a freak deep freeze brought Texas to the brink of an electric-grid collapse, the surviving members of the Texas metal band Power Trip gathered at guitarist Nick Stewart’s house in Dallas.

The four — Stewart, 32; guitarist Blake Ibanez, 29; drummer Chris Ulsh, 33; and bassist Chris Whetzel, 33 — had spread out across the state and country during the fall and winter surge of the pandemic. They’d hadn’t all been in the same room since the early fall of 2020.

“I just got here like five minutes ago; it’s so strange to me to be seeing these guys for the first time in six or seven months,” said Ulsh, who now lives in Philadelphia.

“It’s been a long time, but it doesn’t feel like it,” Stewart said. “I guess it hasn’t really hit me until right now.”

The last time they were all together was for a funeral. On Aug. 24, Power Trip’s singer, Riley Gale, died at 34, a brutal loss of one of their genre’s most viscerally compelling performers and empathetic songwriters. In a devastating year for music, Gale’s death hit especially hard — a young singer at the height of his powerswho had shared stages with Ozzy Osbourne and Danzig and whose band was poised for stardom.

Although no cause of death has been publicly released (a representative for the group said, “The family has not released the toxicology report to anyone, so Riley’s cause of death cannot be confirmed”), one of metal’s most important and inventive groups of the last decade now has to stare down a future without its singer — and close friend.

Monday’s interview was the first time Power Trip had spoken publicly as a group since Gale’s death.

On Sunday, Power Trip is nominated for its first Grammy, for metal performance, for a version of its song “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe),” released off a surprise live LP in June. For a group that takes its ferocious cues from ’80s thrash and hardcore, the band members are unexpectedly earnest about this potential award. They had huge ambitions as a band, and each said that their peers acknowledging their achievements with Gale would be a truly meaningful coda as they grieve.

“Losing Riley was the saddest thing that ever happened to me,” Ulsh said. “But I’m so proud of everything we accomplished together. One of the coolest things from the start was that there was no ceiling to this band, and this Grammy nomination is a perfect example of that.”

Seven months on from Gale’s death, the band and its peers understandably struggle to talk about what he meant to their lives. “Just heard about Riley. Goddamnit. Sending love to his family and friends and his band,” Anthrax’s Scott Ian wrote on social media after news of Gale’s death broke. Ice-T wrote, “I’m devastated... Still don’t know how... I’m speechless.”

Asked about fond memories of his friend and bandmate, Ulsh took a few beats to try to describe their last days together.

“It still feels very fresh. It’s hard to talk about,” Ulsh said. “We were close. I spent a lot of my downtime on tour with him. It’s still hard to fathom.”

“We’ve never been through anything like this,” Ibanez agreed. “But it’s definitely brought us closer. You’re together all the time, then in the blink of an eye, you know you’ll never see each other again.”

“But this has helped us all realize how much we love each other,” Stewart said.

Riley Gale leaps into the air while performing with his band.

Power Trip’s members have played together for more than a decade, but even though they released their last studio album, “Nightmare Logic,” in 2017, their worldview seemed perfectly timed to the present moment of public fury and big-picture social critique.

Their music pulls from the hard-riffing roots of Texas metal forebears like Pantera but caught the ear of the tastemaking L.A. metal label Southern Lord. Power Trip arrived at its brand of thrash metal through a lens of basement hardcore punk and fervent prison-reform politics.

Even the most demanding tough-guy metal fans could recognize their sincerity and ability. Gale was not an overtly menacing physical presence onstage, in the way many metal frontmen try to posture. But alongside peers like Code Orange, Turnstile and Oathbreaker, something about Gale’s conviction connected deeply with fans well beyond metal’s typical catharsis.

“Power Trip was the first heavy band I can remember that was universally beloved since, like, Slayer,” said Albert Mudrian, editor of the metal magazine Decibel. “Everybody knew the stars were aligning for them to take the next step. There aren’t many extreme bands who crossed over, who can crack a Billboard top 10. Power Trip were in the position to join them.”

The band was especially attuned to the ongoing movement against police violence. Power Trip’s 2013 song “Conditioned to Death” riffed on Michel Foucault to depict prison’s strangling of human potential. Gale guest-howled on “Point the Finger,” a 2020 single from Ice-T’s metal band Body Count released at the height of the racial justice protests after George Floyd’s death. The band’s song “If Not Us Then Who” quoted civil-rights activist John Lewis.

Even the stampeding licks of “Executioner’s Tax,” an older song now up for a Grammy in a live version, hits harder in light of the roiling demonstrations against police brutality over the last year.

“Death hides behind veiled faces / It only takes one swing and you’re gone,” Gale screamed. “The executioner, the beginning and the end / He carries cold hard steel masked with the taste of medicine.”

Listening to that live recording today “definitely hits home,” Whetzel said. “It takes me right back to that show. It touches me now in a way I wouldn’t have imagined.”

Although the pandemic had already shuttered the band’s world of sweat- and spit-soaked live shows, the group was working on new material and in January 2020 had just thrown the second edition of its hometown festival, Evil Beat, with Deafheaven, Carcass and Torche. Even mainstream outlets like NPR took notice of their rise.

“It’s easy for me to downplay what we accomplished, but the response has been pretty incredible,” Ibanez said. “To get this outpouring of respect and love was very cool. It’s helped a lot. It makes me feel like what we were doing had a purpose.”

Few metal bands take the Grammys as a defining barometer of success. But as Power Trip slowly begins to think about both its legacy and its future (the band has no idea yet what its next steps in music will be: “We do want to continue to play music together; we just are not sure what that looks like at this time,” Ibanez said.), it keeps turning back to its songwriting with Gale and the way the music resonated with fans, those deeply immersed in metal as well as far outside that sphere.

Riley Gale crouches on the floor during a performance.

A Dallas LGBTQ transitional-housing center, Dallas Hope Charities, plans to name its new library after Gale, who helped raise thousands in donations and invited its volunteers to set up outreach efforts at Power Trip shows. “If that is something that brings them calm to their anxiety and lets them have that quiet time and that space, that’ll be there for them,” Chief Executive Evie Scrivner told the Dallas Observer, announcing the library after Gale’s death.

“It’s easy for a band to say they’re ‘anti-authoritarian,’ but Riley was looking around and seeing people who were really oppressed; that’s what he reacted to,” Mudrian said. “He wasn’t lamenting his own situation so much as he was listening to the stories of other people. That speaks to a generousness he had as a person.”

All four band members are just beginning to assess what Gale meant to their lives and what their band has meant to metal. But as a valediction for this time in their career, they’re proud that this recording of “Executioner’s Tax” is a testament to Power Trip’s importance to metal, at the Grammys and far beyond.

“I hope we changed people’s perceptions about what a metal band can be,” Ibanez said. “We didn’t have to compromise; we just were who we were, and people respected that about us. I hope that’s how people will remember us.”

Power Trip’s Riley Gale Cause of Death Revealed

By Noah Yoo and Madison Bloom

Riley Gale

Riley Gale , frontman for Texas thrash metal band Power Trip , died last August at the age of 34. Now, Rolling Stone reports that Gale died from the toxic effects of fentanyl. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the cause of death to RS , stating that the manner of death was ruled as accidental. Pitchfork has reached out to representatives for Gale, as well as Dallas County’s Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences for further information.

Gale’s death was confirmed by his bandmates in a statement posted on August 25. (Gale died the night before.) “Riley was a friend, a brother, a son,” they wrote. “Riley was both a larger than life rock star and a humble and giving friend. He touched so many lives through his lyrics and through his huge heart.”

Following the news of Gale’s death, numerous artists shared tributes to the frontman, including Fucked Up, Touché Amoré, Code Orange, Anthrax, Uniform, Coheed and Cambria, Geoff Rickley, and more. Last October, organizers in Dallas revealed plans for the forthcoming Riley Gale Library at the Dallas Hope Center —the city’s sole shelter for LGBTQ+ youth.

He took home the hardware for Best Metal Performance and Best Rock Album. It marked the metal legend’s first solo GRAMMY® win since 1994 when he won Best Metal Performance for “I Don’t Wanna Change the World ( Live & Loud ).

“I’m one lucky motherfucker to have won the Best Rock Album Grammy,” the now a five-time GRAMMY® Award winner exclaimed. “I was blessed to work with some of the greatest musicians in the world and Andrew Watt as my producer on this album. Winning the Best Metal Performance was equally gratifying being that the song featured my longtime friend and Black Sabbath bandmate, Tony Iommi.”

Metallica’s upcoming eleventh studio LP  72 Seasons  arrives on April 14 via the band’s own Blackened Recordings. Produced by Greg Fidelman with frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, and clocking in at over 77 minutes, the 12-track  72 Seasons  is Metallica’s first full length collection of new material since 2016’s  Hardwired…To Self-Destruct . Iron Maiden brought their Legacy of the Beast Tour back to North American last year for another massive run. The band’s latest album  Senjutsu  arrived in 2021. The album peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rock and Top Hard Rock Albums charts.

In 2020, AC/DC released their seventeenth studio album  Power Up . The record peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and topped the charts in several other countries around the world. AC/DC have not toured since their Rock or Bust trek wrapped up in 2016.

Tool have a number of festival appearances slated for 2022, including a headlining slot at Aftershock. Last summer, they released their GRAMMY®-Award winning fifth album  Fear Inoculum  as a new black vinyl set via RCA Records. The 3-disc 180 gram set on black vinyl features new artwork by guitarist Adam Jones. It comes in a triple gatefold jacket and an exclusive 12″ x 36″ double-sided poster. Last March, Tool released a re-imagined version of “Opiate,” the title track from their first EP. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of their first commercially-available release, the band re-worked and extended the song –  “Opiate 2 “  – with an accompanying short film.

Guns N’ Roses are embarking on a massive world tour this summer. The North American leg runs through October 16m making stops in Boston, Chicago, Nashville, Charlotte, Vancouver, and more. The band is also returning to Hersheypark Stadium in Pennsylvania for the first U.S. show of the tour. They previously kicked off their We’re F’N Back! Tour there back in 2021. Revisit our review and live photos from the show  HERE .

Last year, Guns N’ Roses came out with a a new EP  Hard Skool . The record was released nearly a year ago on February 25, 2022. It was the first time in 28 years that vocalist Axl Rose, guitarist Slash, and bassist Duff McKagan collaborated together on new material together.

The trio was accompanied on the new studio effort by the current members of the GNR lineup, which is completed by guitarist Richard Fortus and drummer Frank Ferrer, as well as keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese. The EP featured live recordings of the band’s ‘91 power ballad “Don’t Cry” and “You’re Crazy” from their seminal debut LP  Appetite For Destruction .

Released back in August of 2021, the single “Absurd “ was the first new Guns N’ Roses song in 13 years.

Fresh off their  50th anniversary celebrations , Judas Priest are reportedly working on music for the follow-up to their acclaimed 2018 album  Firepower . The record is the band’s biggest commercial success, charting at No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart and Billboard 200 as well as hitting No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart. After delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Judas Priest toured relentlessly to celebrate the success of Firepower and the band’s five decades of heavy metal.

If you plan on having your RV delivered to the site, the person whose name is on the camping site order must be present at check-in. RV’s that show up without the original site purchaser/renter will be turned away. We recommend that you meet the delivery person at a remote location (such as a Walmart) and travel to the site together. Please note that only your RV will be allowed into the tollbooth area for check-in. No additional vehicles can accompany the RV through the check-in process. Please also note that your RV will not be allowed into the check-in lot if you do not have your RV parking sticker posted according to sticker installation instructions. If you are working with delivery people to bring your RV onto the event grounds, we feel that the following options are your best bet:

  • Meet at a remote location and pick up your RV. Bring it to the site and park it yourself.
  • If you need help parking/placing your RV and you are bringing your own vehicle: First, buy a Camping Companion Parking pass for your additional car/vehicle. Meet the delivery person at a remote location and ride together in the RV to the site, temporarily leaving your car at the alternate meeting location. Once the RV is placed, ride back to your meeting spot in the delivery person’s tow-vehicle, pick up your car, and come back to the site to park your car in the companion lot.
  • If you need help parking/placing your RV and you are bringing your own vehicle, plus you are renting/borrowing a motorized RV: First, make sure to purchase a Camping Companion Parking pass for your vehicle. Meet at a remote location and ride in the RV with the delivery person to the site and have a friend drive your vehicle to the companion lot. Once the RV is delivered, walk back to the companion lot to meet your friend and give them a ride back to wherever they are parked. The delivery person can also walk back to the companion lot where they can be picked up by an associate.
  • If you need help parking/placing your RV and you are not bringing your own vehicle, take a taxi or car service to meet the delivery person at a remote location and ride together in the RV to the site. Have the delivery person walk to the companion lot where they can be picked up by an associate.
  • A camping spot will only be honored if the person who bought the spot is present at check-in wearing a Event Wristband.

No. If you are Car Camping, you may sleep in your car, on your car, next to your car or in many other creative sleeping places as long as they follow all camping rules and are within the lines of your allotted camping spot.

Do not sleep in the fire lanes. You could get run over by the porta-potty trucks. Ouch.

All camping areas are adjacent to the venue. However, comfortable shoes are recommended as the camping lots are quite LARGE.

LOCKERS FAQS

Both are located inside the venue near the entrance/exit of the Yellow Path. We will release a venue map on our website and Instagram closer to the show that will indicate the exact location.

We’ll have your name and email when we scan your mobile ticket at check-in. We’ll allow you to add a friend’s name and email to the reservation on site as well.

Please bring your phone and we’ll scan the mobile ticket inside the email you receive from us. We will email a copy to you closer to the show. If you have any troubles, please contact [email protected]

Please download your mobile ticket on your device ahead of time (and add to your Apple Wallet if applicable). If you forget your mobile ticket, our staff can check your name and order in our system.

Yes. We will hold your locker reservation throughout the entire event until you claim it.

Let’s use the Medium Locker as an example. The ticketing company charges $55 + fees. You bring the scannable ticket to locker check-in. Our staff hands you a lock with a preset combination that only we, and you, know for the safety and security of your belongings. When you return the combo lock to us, you immediately receive $10 cash back. Thus, your net total cost for the Medium Locker for three days drops to $45 + fees. You’ll leave the event with $10 in your pocket – gas money for the drive home.

You must have an event wristband to access the lockers during show hours. When the event is over each night, the grounds are closed, and you will not be able to access the lockers until the following day.

Maybe. There is a limited supply of lockers – and all of them are for sale online before the show. The lockers usually sell out before the show begins. If the lockers sell out online, as they have for the past many years, there won’t be any lockers available to rent at the festival – unless someone cancels at the last minute.

Yes! Please reach out to us by email at [email protected] by the Friday before the event weekend. We’d love to give another fan the opportunity to store their belongings.

If you lose the combo lock, you will forfeit the $10 deposit. You will receive a new combo lock and will need to pay another refundable $10 deposit. Once you return the new combo lock, you will receive the second deposit back. If you find your “lost” combo lock and can unlock it, you’ll receive your original deposit back too.

Yes, we’ve got you covered.

No! You cannot use your own lock. You must use the lock provided by us. There is no additional charge for the use of our lock, which remains as our property. A $10.00 refundable lock deposit is collected when you reserve the keyless combo lock online.

WHY RESERVE A LOCKER?

Comfort BE PREPARED! Store extra clothing so you’re prepared for hot desert days and chilly desert nights.

Freedom KEEP YOUR HANDS FREE! Why bother lugging around necessities that aren’t quite necessities 24/7?

Safety KEEP YOUR STUFF PROTECTED! Snagging band merch is awesome until you have to carry it around all day. Stash your new swag in your locker.

Sharable WITH FRIENDS / NOT STRANGERS! At your own discretion. Please make sure the people who know your combination are responsible and trustworthy.

<p>The before and after photos of this Viking ax are a testament to the power of restoration. This ancient weapon was forged centuries ago, likely by a skilled craftsman in Scandinavia during the height of the Viking Age. The original ax had become tarnished over time and its blade dulled, but with some careful attention it has been restored to its former glory. Now, the blade is sharp and gleaming, while the handle is polished and smooth. Its beauty and craftsmanship remain intact, allowing us to appreciate the skill and artistry of our ancestors.</p>

<p>On a balmy summer night in 1975, Paul McCartney took to the stage at Los Angeles' Roxy Theatre and serenaded his daughter Stella with an intimate acoustic performance. As he strummed away on his beloved Gibson J-160E guitar, Harry Benson captured the moment for posterity: McCartney's eyes closed, head tilted back as if lost in the music, while Stella looked up adoringly from her seat in the audience. It was a momentous occasion that will forever be remembered in history. Children who had grown up during wartime embraced the newfound peace and celebrated with their families. This day marked an important milestone in American history and is still commemorated today with parades, speeches, and ceremonies honoring those who served in WWI.

The Reddit mods power trips are killing the platform

reddit mods power trip

Can you believe how bad the Reddit mods power trips are getting lately? This isn’t actually something that is new , it’s just new to me because I have been experiencing how fat their heads are getting firsthand with my posts being deleted all the time.

I’ve been on Reddit for over 10 years but just recently started posting my articles to relevant Reddit Threads and only to have a Mod delete my post because THEY don’t like it, even though there were 20+or more thumbs up and thousands of views.

Are you serious right now?

WTF

One of the posts that got deleted by a power tripping Reddit mod was a funny one that I posted in the comedy threads of Reddit. It received a lot of Reddit votes and comments. It got so many good votes and comments so what was the problem?

So I messaged the rude mods Reddit deleted messages asking why. And this Idiot claims that it isn’t the type of content for the thread. I’m like, “WTF?” It’s a cartoon from when Peter Griffin from Family guy made fun of the time that Christian Bale had a meltdown on set?

How is that not funny content for a comedy thread?

I see I’m not the only one.

Mac's Opinion - The place where everyone is entitled to my opinion

If you do a simple Google search for “ Reddit mods power trip ” you’ll be flooded with results and the comments so far on Reddit pretty much back everything I have gone through also.

If all these people are noticing this problem, then why aren’t the Admins of the Site doing anything about it?

McDonald's adds new ‘Grandma McFlurry' onto menus for a limited time

The new mcflurry "tastes like a trip down memory lane," according to mcdonald's officials, by francie swidler • published may 17, 2024 • updated on may 17, 2024 at 3:09 pm.

Last year, it was the Grimace Shake . This year, it's a new McFlurry...or maybe, an older one?

The limited-edition treat, called the "Grandma McFlurry," hits McDonald's restaurants in Chicago and beyond May 21, a press release said. The dessert, according to the release, was created with the special lady in mind, saying the Chicago-based burger chain is a tried and true place to take grandchildren.

"McDonald's is the place where lifelong memories are made with grandma," the release said. "From treating us to an impromptu soft serve to letting us have dessert first, grandmas always know how to make us feel special," the release said. "And now, it's her turn."

The new McFlurry flavor features "chopped, crunchy candy pieces (like grandma's favorite treat that she hid in her purse)," the release said, mixed with a "delicious" syrup and vanilla soft serve.

"The Grandma McFlurry tastes like a trip down memory lane, and we're excited to give our fans that experience while honoring the grandma-figure in all our lives," Tariq Hassan, chief marketing and customer experience officer at McDonald's, said in the release.

A photo of the Grandma McFlurry, provided by McDonald's, shows the drink in a red, white and pink cup, with a McDonald's logo atop what appears to be a doily. Underneath the logo, the signature "XOXO, Grandma" can be seen.
