The Differences Between One-Trip, Cargo-Worthy, and Wind and Water Tight Shipping Containers

The condition of all containers is determined by the Institute of International Container Lessors (IICL) and a valid Convention for Safe Containers (CSC) plate. 

Although all three types of these containers can be used for building projects, office spaces, storing cargo, and more, there are some major differences between the three that might alter your decision when choosing the right container for you.  

One-Trip Containers

As mentioned above, these containers are used once, more often than not just to be transported to a new location or carry cargo one time, and are then sold as “new”. 

There will be little to no exterior and interior damage done to the steel and no rust. It is for this reason that one-trip containers are highly sought-after when looking to build a new project for living/residing in.  

The only downside to one-trip shipping containers is that they aren’t exactly as “environmentally-friendly” as older, used containers because they’re being constructed as new. Using older containers constitutes recycling whereas using new containers does not.

Cargo Worthy Containers

Cargo-worthy containers are shipping containers mostly used for international and overseas transport . 

To be classed as cargo-worthy, these containers must have a CSC plate outlining all necessary details including a certificate of wind and watertight approval. 

This type of container is generally used for shipping purposes for over 8 years before being sold privately. If you were to purchase a cargo-worthy container it may come with significant dents and exterior deterioration.

As you can see, the body of the container may need some minor work before beginning any kind of construction work on this type of container. 

Wind and Water Tight Containers

Wind and watertight (WWT) containers are not cargo-worthy because they don’t have the CSC seal of approval for international and overseas shipping standards. 

WWT containers are by far one of the cheaper options when it comes to purchasing your sturdy steel frame. You can pick up cheap WWT containers for as little as US$1,500 for older, more dented models. 

Just like the cargo-worthy containers, WWT containers may or may not come with significant wear and tear and dents. The more damage to the frame, the cheaper the container.

Though it is still sturdy, and essentially hurricane proof as some would say, there are a few damages as well as rust deterioration that make this container not-so-pleasing to the eye. 

What are the Costs of a One-Trip Container?

Because they are basically new and come in the best condition possible out of all containers, one-trip shipping containers are more expensive than others. 

You can purchase a one-trip container for approximately US$3,000, depending on its condition and availability. Prices can be dearer for great-quality containers as well as any modified foundations. Some one-trip containers are priced at US$5,000 or more for being in great condition.

While these containers are available in sizes and layouts similar to any other standard sized container, high cube shipping containers are defined by their height.

A high cube shipping container or HC container is an intermodal storage container unit with an external height of 9ft. 6in.

That’s a 2,895.6 mm shipping container for the rest of the world.

Its added height gives owners and renters additional headspace and a convenient way to increase storage capacity by adding additional volume, without needing a longer container.

While this might be your first time hearing this term, we thought it would be helpful for you to examine high cube shipping containers vs. standard shipping containers so that you can better explore your container height size options.

As mentioned above, the main difference between a standard shipping container and a high cube shipping container is the height.

USED cargo worthy containers are certified for global transport based on the condition of the doors, floor, walls, and ceiling. Dents, rust, and corroded paint may be present. The unit is leak proof.

REFURBISHED cargo worthy containers are certified for global transport based on the condition of the doors, floor, walls, and ceiling. The unit has been sanded, all rust removed, and a new coat of primer and paint applied. The container is leak proof.

Conexwest does not sell "AS-IS" or "Wind Water Tight" (WWT) due to the risk of structural integrity.

The Warranty Coverage Period for New ISO shipping containers is ten years from the date of purchase from Conexwest. The Warranty Coverage Period for Used Cargo Worthy ISO shipping containers is five years from the date of purchase from Conexwest. A leakproof unit guarantee included. 

During the warranty period, Conexwest will repair, using new or refurbished replacement parts, or replace units or parts of a container at no charge. The container must prove defective because of improper material or workmanship, under normal use and maintenance.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) significantly upgraded its profitability projections for airlines in 2024. The trade group now expects net profits to reach $30.5 billion, an increase from $27.4 billion in 2023.

This surge in profitability is accompanied by record-high traveler numbers and revenues. A new record number of passengers is expected to fly in the U.S. this summer. For the full year, the total global number of travelers is forecasted to reach approximately 5 billion, with revenues projected to soar to $996 billion, a 9.7% increase from 2023.

Global airline industry profits forecast to increase again in 2024

The recovery in travel has been nothing short of remarkable. Domestic travel bounced back to pre-pandemic levels by the spring of 2023, while international routes have recently surpassed 2019 numbers. The IATA now expects the number of world passengers to grow by an average of 3.8% per year over the next 20 years, resulting in over 4 billion additional passenger journeys by 2043.

“The human need to fly has never been stronger,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

Business Travel Spending Set To Surpass $1.5 Trillion This Year

While leisure travel has been leading the recovery, business travel is steadily gaining momentum, albeit at a slower rate. A Morning Consult survey found that only 10% of U.S. adults had traveled domestically for work in March 2024.

The trend appears to be headed in the right direction, however, with corporations prioritizing domestic trips over long-haul international travel. The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) predicts global business travel spending will surpass $1.5 trillion in 2024, up from $1.02 trillion in 2022.

Regarding the hotel market, investors are optimistic, but forecasts are being downgraded. Profitability still lags pre-pandemic levels. Earlier this week, STR and Tourism Economics revised down their 2024-2025 U.S. hotel forecast, reflecting lower-than-expected performance in early 2024 and reduced growth projections for the rest of the year.

Domestic Travel Spending In China

On the other hand, I’m encouraged to see the return of Chinese outbound travel. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) predicts that China’s travel and tourism sector will contribute a record-breaking 12.62 trillion yuan ($1.7 trillion) to the country’s economy by the end of this year.

Domestic travel spending in China is also expected to reach new heights, providing a significant boost to the luxury market. As I’ve shared with you before, Chinese shoppers were major luxury-goods spenders before the pandemic. These shoppers are gradually returning, with domestic luxury spending up by 50%, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. The resurgence is encouraging for long-term luxury investments, both in mainland China and Europe.

The airline industry’s recovery is part of a broader positive trend in the services sector. The S&P Global US Services PMI, which includes the airline industry, rose to a one-year high of 54.8 in May, accelerating past its three-month moving average. This points to a marked expansion in services activity, reflecting strong consumer demand and business confidence.

Sharp rise in U.S. business activity

The airline industry presents a unique blend of recovery and growth opportunities. I believe the group is well-positioned for sustained growth, with strong profitability projections, an ongoing recovery in both leisure and business travel and positive market dynamics. This Low-Cost Airline Has One-Way Flights From $30 — but You'll Have to Book Soon

Low-cost airline Breeze Airways has slashed prices on many of its popular routes for summer travel starting at just $30.

“Looking for a great deal on a last-minute flight? Do you have the flexibility to travel just about anywhere? We've got you covered,” Breeze shared about the sale on its website . 

The sale, which ends on Thursday, June 13, at 11:59 p.m. PT, is available for travel dates between July 31 and August 14. There’s no promo code required to find these flights on Breeze’s website or app, as the airline has already discounted the fares for eligible routes. 

Travel + Leisure found fares ranging from $30 to $39 on the following flights: 

• Charleston to/from Cincinnati and Louisville, Kentucky
• Evansville, Illinois and Mobile to/from Orlando
• Raleigh-Durham to Tampa
• New Orleans to Orlando
• Phoenix to/from Provo
• Hartford to/from Norfolk and Pittsburgh
