Here’s where you may buy real jewelry, decorations, wedding supplies, and cutlery. It is one of Srinagar’s busiest and most well-liked shopping destinations. You can also get lovely Kashmiri paintings and ethnic clothing with elaborate needlework, wonderful pashmina shawls, and pathani outfits. A visit to Lal Chowk is sure to give a memorable experience.

Dastgeer Sahib – An Old Sufi Shrine

oldest spiritual destinations to visit in Srinagar

Dastgeer Sahib, a 200-year-old Sufi shrine, is regarded as one of the oldest spiritual destinations and places to visit in Srinagar. The shrine was allegedly built by the philanthropist Mir Husain Qadri in 1845, contrary to popular perception. The unusual elements of this shrine scarcely had any counterparts. It was encircled by internal walls decorated with papier mache finish and covered with a typical Khatamband ceiling with numerous crystal chandeliers. A hideous fire event that happened in the year 2012 seriously devastated Dastgeer Sahib. The shrine has been restored to its former glory and now houses beautiful artifacts that belonged to Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jelani. The shrine which is an architectural marvel is thought to contain five burials, including one of the famed Sufi saints. Additionally, a mosque and a busy market are both close by and a must-to-do thing in Srinagar.

Pari Mahal – Traditional Islamic Style Palace

Pari Mahal came to be known as the house of fairies

Pari Mahal , also known as The Angels’ Abode lies south-west of Dal Lake and is perched atop the Zabarwan mountain range overlooking Srinagar. Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor immensely supported art and architecture during his rule and the building shows this. The six well-kept terraced gardens are the reason why Pari Mahal came to be known as the house of fairies. Due to the intriguing history behind it, this palace which was constructed in the traditional Islamic style became the most important historical structure. Due to the stunning vistas and gorgeous plants, this location also draws a lot of wildlife enthusiasts. The palace is definitely a sight to behold, especially with these captivating grounds. It was initially a monastery for the Buddhists and later went on to be an astrology school for Emperor Shah Jahan’s son, Dara Shikoh.

Amarnath Cave – Pilgrim Site

Amarnath shrine closes during snowfall in srinagar

Coming all the way to Srinagar and going back without visiting the well-known shrine might be a big disappointment for many. So if you are planning to see Srinagar during the summer months, then a visit to Amarnath shrine is a must. The Hindu shrine Amarnath Cave which is 3,888 meters above sea level receives thousands of visitors each year. During the summer months when the cave is open, tens of thousands of devotees travel there to reach the ice stalagmite that has developed inside. To get here, one must navigate treacherous mountainous terrain. The Lord Shiva-themed shrine which is over 5000 years old occupies a significant position in Hindu mythology. It has an ice stalagmite inside that waxes from May to August and has the appearance of Lord Shiva. Definitely one of the top places to visit in Srinagar!

Awantipora – Ancient Ruin Temple

ancient town in srinagar

Awantipora, one of the main tourist destinations in Srinagar , is only 30 km away and should not be missed! The area is well-known for being the former capital city of Awantipora in antiquity. The ancient town that was established by King Avantivarman was also known as Viswasara. The shrine to Lord Vishnu is housed in a modest yet elaborate temple. After the earthquake’s devastation and the clearing of the debris, the temple was once again its own. Ancient rustic remains from Awantipora are well-known. The impressive architecture and artwork from earlier times are also on display amid the ruins. It is a well-known historical location in Awantipora and one of the top tourist destinations in Srinagar. Anantnag, Padgampora, and Martand Sun Temple are other well-known tourist destinations to check out from Awantipora.

Enjoying a Shikara ride, staying in a houseboat, rafting at Sonmarg, Skiing at Gulmarg, Paragliding above the Valleys and tasting delicious local cuisine are some of the must-do activities while in Srinagar.

Be it summer, winter, or autumn, beautiful Srinagar will never fail to amaze you. The autumn months between August and October are the best time to visit as during this time weather is not too cold and is perfect for sightseeing. It’s best to avoid the summer months between March to June as it can get really hot. If you enjoy the cold weather, then the best time to travel is between November to March.

Taking into account all the parameters of safety, Srinagar is as safe as any other city in India. The huge rush of tourists during the last few years clearly shows that this place is safe not just for people traveling with family and friends but also for solo women travelers.

Nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Kashmir Valley , the enchanting city of Srinagar reveals a treasure trove of hidden places waiting to be explored. Beyond the bustling markets and famous landmarks, lies a realm of serenity and mystery, where time seems to stand still. These hidden places in Srinagar offer a glimpse into the city’s rich history, natural wonders, and cultural heritage. From secluded gardens blooming with vibrant flowers to tranquil lakes shrouded in mist, each corner holds a secret waiting to be discovered by the intrepid traveler. Embark on a journey of enchantment as we unveil the lesser-known gems that make Srinagar a true haven for those seeking off-the-beaten-path adventures.

How To Get To Srinagar

Srinagar boats

There are two ways to get to Srinagar from Delhi via road. Those are Delhi-Manali-Leh and Delhi-Jammu-Srinagar. The first passage is open only 3-4 months in the year, while the second is open throughout the year. You can also take a train from Delhi to Jammu and then from Jammu to Srinagar but the most hassle-free option is to just get a flight from Delhi to Srinagar.

Just note that if you’re traveling by road, make sure the passage you’re taking is open. Once, I took a trip to Kashmir in May even the people at the bus station in Delhi didn’t have that information. We decided to take the advice of an old man from Manali that we met at the bus station who claimed that the passage was but when we reached Manali, we found out that the passage was closed due to the unexpected snow. So, being left without other options, we bought another ticket from Manali to Jammu and traveled for 14 hours starting from Delhi to Manali and 16 hours from Manali to Jammu.

Where To Stay In Srinagar?

Dal Lake Travel to Srinagar

I’ve stayed in different kinds of accommodation from luxurious hotels to cheap boathouses. The first time I visited, I stayed in the cheapest boathouses we could find. We only paid 200 INR per night ($3.5 USD). It wasn’t the best accommodation, but it had everything we need. We were making instant jokes about how we might wake up in the water because the floor was screeching every time you’d set a foot on it. Luckily, that didn’t happen. But whatever you choose, you can use our Booking affiliate link and get up to 15% off on all properties in Srinagar.

Best Tours To Take In Srinagar

Tours are a great way to explore the city and support local tourism companies who despite the natural beauties of the region have been struggling because the region doesn’t get a lot of visitors because of the political turmoil between India and Pakistan . I’ve taken many tours in Srinagar and here are some of my favorite choices.

If you’re looking for a tour that covers most of Srinagar’s highlights, the Srinagar Splendors tours is a great choice but if you’re looking to explore the city for the whole day, this tour shows you not only the highlights of Srinagar and the beauty of its lakes but also the finest dining options in town.

Alternatively, this tour is a great choice for people who want to get an in-depth tour of Srinagar’s old town.

If you’re looking for some nice day trip ideas from Srinagar, I warmly recommend this Gulmarg excursion – it’s one of the most beautiful places in the region and the tour also gives you a taste of traditional Kashmiri food.

Sonamarg is another great day trip ideas and the guides on this tour were just amazing.

Last but not least, if you’re looking for some longer tours that take care of your accommodation, food, transportation, and activities (so you don’t have to plan a thing), I recommend this private 6-day tour of Kashmir and this 15-day Sringar-Leh tour .

What’s Life Like In Srinagar?

dal lake

The tale of Kashmir always begins with a cold breeze that smacks you in the face as soon as you reach Srinagar. After that, this breeze becomes your faithful companion throughout your trip. Srinagar, the home of the Dal lake is an amazing city that looks like a winter version of Venice and as such has a lot of fascinating tourism sights. At this lake, you will find one of the biggest floating markets in India where you can buy literally everything, including hash and weed, if you’re into this stuff.

However, one can’t help but notice the deep trails that the political situation left on the people of Kashmir . The roads are awful, electricity and water breakdowns are common, the Internet is almost not existent, and home-made jugaads are omnipresent. Being in such a difficult situation, the Indian Government is afraid to invest in the region, because of the fear of separation. On the other hand, people don’t trust the Government and don’t feel like they are part of India , and their animosity towards the Government grows. That’s what I call the vicious circle of Kashmir…

Modi declares victory for his party in Indian general election

The party of incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared victory in India's parliamentary elections.

The people of the country had "expressed their confidence in his ruling coalition for the third time in a row," Modi wrote on the X platform on Tuesday evening.

After a portion of the votes had been counted, his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to become the strongest party once again but will lose its absolute majority in the lower house of parliament. This would mean that it would have to rely on its two coalition partners to form a government.

It was considered certain that Modi would be able to continue governing for a third term of five years. However, Rahul Gandhi of the opposition Congress did not rule out talks with two of Modi's coalition partners.

The stock market suffered its worst losses in four years in reaction to Modi's set-back.

Modi's BJP alone had won 303 seats in the previous election, well above the 272-seat majority needed to govern. Five years ago, together with its allies, it won 353 seats, a whopping majority.

Before this election, Modi had set himself the goal of increasing his majority to more than 400 seats. Instead, forecasts suggest the opposition camp have made surprising gains.

Nevertheless, Modi was expected to become only the second prime minister in the country's history to rule for three consecutive terms after Jawaharlal Nehru, the country's first.
