Taylor Swift; Beyoncé; Drake

Dozens of artists hit the road during 2023 to bring their music to sold-out venues across the globe.

The first half of the year started off strong with artists and bands like Harry Styles, Journey, Carrie Underwood, SZA, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Reba McEntire, Janet Jackson, Lizzo, Blink-182, Charlie Puth, Billy Idol, Wiz Khalifa, Bebe Rexha and Black Pink heading out on their headlining tours.

Some artists had such sought-after tickets for their tours, including Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, that it led to sites, such as Ticketmaster, completely crashing when tickets dropped.

Many summer nights were also filled with good tunes this year as artists including Alicia Keys, Post Malone, Paramore, Chris Stapleton, Boygenius, Lionel Richie, Melissa Etheridge and Maggie Rogers set out on tours during the warmer months.

Concert tours are not only an opportunity for artists to promote their latest albums or to highlight their entire music catalogs, but it’s also a chance for their fans to come together to celebrate the music and musicians that they look up to and love. Those attending shows for artists such as Swift, Beyoncé and Styles often dress to impress, going all out for their outfits. Beyoncé even asked her fans to specifically come to her Virgo season concerts for her Renaissance World Tour decked out in silver and chrome, to celebrate her astrological sign. Swifties, inspired by the lyric “Make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it …” from her song “You’re on Your Own, Kid,” made themed bracelets to trade and hand out to other fans at each of the stops on her Eras Tour.

The performers often praise their fans for all their love and support, like Swift writing on social media in July after her stops in Seattle, Washington, “Thank you for everything. All the cheering, screaming, jumping, dancing, singing at the top of your lungs.”

But if you missed the opportunity to see your favorite artists earlier this year, don’t worry, because The Hollywood Reporter has compiled a list of some of the most anticipated concert tours happening this fall, below.

Travis Barker, Mark Hoppus, and Tom DeLonge of Blink-182

Last week, Billboard revealed its year-end Boxscore charts , ranking the top tours, venues, and promoters of 2023. That coverage included analysis of the new wave of genre diverse artists crashing stadium stages, and in turn, our charts. This week, we are breaking down the year’s biggest tours, genre by genre . Today, we continue with rock.

Rock music has been at the center of the touring industry for decades, with legendary acts like The Rolling Stones , U2 , and the Eagles controlling stadium calendars and delivering record-breaking grosses. That is still the case, as rock is responsible for more entries in the all-genre top 10, 20, 40 and 100 than any other genre.

But at 32.4% of all top 100 tours’ grosses, rock takes a dramatic hit from last year’s 42.5% figure. Combined with pop, the two central genres have lost a third of their total market share since the pandemic, as pockets of Latin and K-pop acts take up prime Boxscore real estate. And as rock accounts for many of the oldest artists in the top 100, with Latin and K-pop bringing up the chart’s youngest names, the future of rock bands as touring titans is blurrier than it was 5-10 years ago.

But with a new round of legacy tours from ‘90s and ‘00s bands, plus steady arena grosses from 21st century acts like Arctic Monkeys, Greta Van Fleet and Imagine Dragons, there is still plenty of juice for the coming years.

Scroll to check out the top 10 highest-grossing tours by rock artists, with such acts qualifying due to recent performance on Billboard ’s Top Rock Albums and/or Hot Rock Songs charts. Rankings are determined according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. All reported shows worldwide between Nov. 1, 2022 – Sept. 30, 2023 are eligible.

Page McConnell, Trey Anastasio, and Jon Fishman of Phish

$76.8M / 597K tickets / 41 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 24

Phish is among the most consistent touring acts, regardless of genre. From its annual destination event in Mexico to its reliable runs of shows at Madison Square Garden, the jam-band legends continue to one-up themselves, after winding up at No. 31 on last year’s all-genre ranking.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Flea and Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers

$77.2M / 657K tickets / 18 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 23

Red Hot Chili Peppers repeat in the year-end rock breakdown with shows in Asia, Europe and North America. Still, the band’s $77.2 million total doesn’t include the $48.2 million from its co-headline shows with Post Malone in Australia.

Matthew Bellamy of Muse

$92.7M / 1M tickets / 45 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 20

Muse makes its first appearance among the year-end top 10 rock tours since 2013, when the glam-rock band earned $43.2 million while on The 2nd Law World Tour. The European leg did the heaviest lifting, with nine of the top 10 grosses of the year.

Mark Hoppus from Blink-182

$95.7M / 692K tickets / 45 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 19

Blink is back with the biggest tour of its career. The original trio of Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker reunited for 45 sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Things came to a head with two nights at Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium, where blink-182 grossed $8.8 million and sold 43,600 tickets.

Guns N' Roses

Axl Rose and Slash of Guns N' Roses

$96.2M / 888K tickets / 31 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 18

Guns N’ Roses logs a second year between $90-100 million after being No. 8 on 2022’s genre Boxscore breakout. More shows after the tracking period’s cutoff puts the rock icons on tap for the ’24 ranking with $19.7 million already in the bank.

Dead & Company

Dead and Company

$114.7M / 845K tickets / 28 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 15

Dead & Company played its farewell tour between May 19 and July 16, yielding its first $100 million summer since launching as a touring unit in 2015. The peak was a three-night run at San Francisco’s Oracle Park to end the tour, earning $20.4 million from 118,000 tickets sold.

James Hetfield, Robert Trujillo, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett of Metallica

$125.8M / 1.2M tickets / 19 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 14

Metallica grossed more than $10 million in seven markets between Europe and North America, doubling up in Montreal, Paris and more. The M72 World Tour continues with scheduled dates through Sept. 29, 2024.

Depeche Mode

Martin Gore and Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode

$175.2M / 1.8M tickets / 47 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 9

The first of three rock acts in the all-genre top 10, Depeche Mode scores the biggest year of its touring career, blowing past 2017’s $123.5 million. Three shows at Mexico City’s Foro Sol on Sept. 21, 23 and 25 delivered the band’s biggest gross ever, at $15.4 million from 195,000 tickets sold.

Elton John

$210M / 1.3M tickets / 65 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 7

Elton John notches a fifth year on the year-end Boxscore recap with the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, having topped the abridged 2020 report. After all was said and done, set a new record as the highest-grossing tour in Boxscore history, regardless of genre. Over 329 shows, the trek earned $939.1 million and sold six million tickets.

Jonny Buckland, Chris Martin, Will Champion and Guy Berryman of Coldplay

$342.5M / 3.2M tickets / 55 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 2

Switching places with John from last year, Coldplay takes top honors as the highest-grossing rock act of 2023. The band’s spread covers shows in North and South America, as well as Europe, with dates in Asia and Australia in the 2024 tracking window. After kicking off in 2022, the Music of the Spheres Tour has brought in $664.5 million and sold 6.7 million tickets.

Lizzo: The Special 2our

The three-time Grammy winner and recent Emmy recipient Lizzo returns to American stages in 2023 with the second leg of The Special 2our. The multi-hyphenate’s tour will make stops at 17 cities throughout North America , bringing all of Lizzo’s chart-topping hits including “Good as Hell,” “About Damn Time,” “Juice” and “Boys.” Expect an electric evening of female empowerment as Lizzo gets support from her troupe of “Big Grrrl” dancers, DJ Sophia Eris (who joins the star for a rousing rendition of Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop”), backup singers and an all-women band. No Lizzo concert would be complete without Sasha Flute, Lizzo’s prized woodwind, which she deploys several times each concert, including during “Truth Hurts” and “Juice.”

Where to get tickets: Tickets to see Lizzo live on tour are available through Ticketmaster .

Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel: Two Icons, One Night

Two of music’s most iconic living legends will share the bill for five rousing evenings of classic rock and soul at stadiums across the country. The Two Icons, One Night tour is a rare double bill of two legendary touring acts, Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel. The limited concert series will open March 10 at Los Angeles ’ SoFi Stadium, followed by one-nighters in Arlington, Texas ; Nashville ; Columbus; and a final evening in Kansas City , on August 19. Both musicians have continuously toured throughout the decades, with Nicks most recently wrapping up a sold-out tour in summer 2022, and Joel touring the world in addition to his record-breaking residency at New York City ’s Madison Square Garden .

Where to get tickets: Tickets to see the iconic duo are on sale now through Ticketmaster .

P!NK: Summer Carnival 2023

Buy a ticket to see P!NK in person, and you know the glam rock diva will soar – figuratively and literally. The singer/songwriter returns to the touring circuit with P!NK’s Summer Carnival 2023, an all-new stadium spectacular with musical guests Brandi Carlile, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo set to open on select dates, with Grouplove and KidCutUp performing at all shows. P!NK concerts offer a thrilling blend of her power vocals and cutting-edge stagecraft as the star can often be seen dangling upside over the crowd or crooning effortlessly from a trapeze swing. The pop legend’s tour arrives in US on July 26 in Cincinnati , followed by 20 performances across the country, concluding on October 9, 2023.

Where to get tickets: Tickets for P!NK’s upcoming Summer Carnival tour are available through Ticketmaster .

Adele performs onstage during the "Weekends with Adele" Residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Adele: Weekends with Adele at the Colosseum, Las Vegas

Adele’s new residency at the Colosseum is the hottest ticket in Las Vegas – and for good reason. The singer/songwriter is at the top of her game in a new production featuring her golden voice plus plenty of Vegas spectacle. The 20-song set list compiles her most popular hits, including a most appropriate opening of “Hello,” as well as such instant classics as “Rolling in the Deep,” “Set Fire to the Rain” and “Skyfall.” This residency is the rare chance to see the megawatt performer in a smaller venue – while there are 4000 seats, this is positively intimate compared to the large arenas she has played in the past.

Where to get tickets: The entire run of Weekends with Adele is sold out. If you’re looking to purchase tickets off a secondary market, make sure the secondary ticket vendor offers a 100% guarantee on your purchase to avoid scams.

Taylor Swift: Eras Tour

With Ticketmaster reporting “historically unprecedented demand,” Taylor Swift’s upcoming Eras Tour is one of the most sought-after concert tickets of just about any era. The highly anticipated 52-night stadium tour is the singer/songwriter’s return to the stage after her 2018 Reputation Tour was the highest-grossing of any in US history. Expect records to be shattered again, with tickets having sold out for the new tour in record time during the presale, alongside reports that demand “could have filled 900 stadiums.” Since Swift has released four albums since she last set out on the road, it’s anyone’s guess as to which songs will make the cut. Still, you can expect a lineup of megahits including “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” to be a part of the set list for certain.

Where to get tickets: Tickets on Ticketmaster were gone in a flash during the presale. Those seeking tickets through a secondary market should stick to a platform like StubHub and VividSeats that offers a 100% money-back guarantee in fraudulent scalping.

Usher performs at the grand opening of Usher: My Way - The Vegas Residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM on July 15, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada

Usher: My Way – The Vegas Residency

Legendary singer/songwriter Usher is one of the greatest R&B showmen of all time. So there’s no question that his latest Vegas residency spanning his remarkable 20-year music career will be a spectacle of epic proportions. Set to return to the Dolby Live theater at Park MGM for 25 new dates from March through July 2023, Usher’s show will offer a rousing set list including many of his hits, such as “My Way,” “OMG” and “Yeah!” The high-voltage evening features plenty of spectacle, including a supporting cast of 23 dancers, roller skaters and pole dancers.

Where to get tickets: Tickets and premium packages can be booked through Usher’s Vegas Residency website .

Dead & Company: The Final Tour

Spanning more than five decades as the quintessential jam band, Dead & Company will hit the road for one final foray last time this summer. The Dead & Co. ensemble – currently led by original Grateful Dead members Bobby Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, joined by Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti and John Mayer – has continued the long legacy of the Grateful Dead by touring for each of the past eight summers. This summer, their final tour will serve as a bittersweet farewell as the band hangs up their guitars and tie-dye after having played more than 2300 concerts as the Grateful Dead. Expect Deadhead groupies from all around the world to descend for many nights of peace, love and happiness.

Where to get tickets: Tickets for Dead & Company’s final tour are available through Ticketmaster .

Singer Marc Anthony performs onstage during the VIVIENDO Tour, Inglewood, California, USA

Marc Anthony: VIVIENDO Tour

Don’t expect to be sitting down for most of Marc Anthony’s wildly energetic VIVIENDO Tour, set to tour the US in 2023. The three-time Grammy and seven-time Latin Grammy winner Anthony delivers a high-energy spectacle, the kind that gets you dancing along from the first down beat. Chart-topping hits fill the set list, including “Pa’lla Voy,” “Vivir Mi Vida” and “Valió la Pena.”

Where to get tickets: Tickets for Marc Anthony’s VIVIENDO Tour are available through Ticketmaster .

Beyoncé: Renaissance Tour

While details have yet to be fully released, Beyoncé will be celebrating her new album Renaissance with a live tour. The pop megastar is truly the first lady of music, having won 28 Grammys – the most by any female artist. If previous tours are any indication, Beyoncé will be making stops at major stadiums throughout the US, bringing with her a larger-than-life spectacle with dozens of backup dancers, pyrotechnics and stunning stagecraft. Renaissance  was built with the dance floor in mind – so get ready for a party like no other.

Where to get tickets: Dates and details for the tour have yet to be released. Sign up for Beyoncé’s newsletter on her official site to be among the first to know.

Rock’s 28 Most Anticipated 2023 Tours

It's been a tough couple of years for the music industry. After the COVID-19 pandemic effectively shut down live shows, many artists struggled to figure out their next moves.

But as many musicians have noted over the past two years, the gradual shift back to live performing has been a relief. Not only is touring one of the most profitable ways for artists to make a living, but the connection with audiences is also difficult to replicate on a screen.

For some, like Bruce Springsteen , 2023 will be the first time they've hit the road for a real tour since before the pandemic. (Springsteen has not toured with the E Street Band since 2017.) "I'm really looking forward to it myself," he told Rolling Stone . " We're going to have a lot of fun." Meanwhile, Joni Mitchell is scheduled to perform her  first full-length concert in more than two decades, and Blink-182 has reformed for a massive global tour.

For others, 2023 will feel a lot different than previous years. Depeche Mode will launch their first tour since the death of founding member Andy Fletcher. Dead & Company , who formed in 2015, will embark on what is reported to be their final tour together. Bob Weir has promised to put on an " exciting, celebratory, and heartfelt last run of shows ."

In short, there's a lot to look forward to in 2023. We've rounded up some of the most anticipated rock tours that we know about so far.

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - FEBRUARY 25: Lainey Wilson performs onstage during New Faces for CRS at Omni Nashville Hotel on February 25, 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee and AS VEGAS, NEVADA - FEBRUARY 01: (EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE) Recording artist George Strait performs as part of his Strait to Vegas engagements at T-Mobile Arena on February 01, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Every Can't-Miss Country Music Tour Scheduled for 2023

Whether you want to see Country Music Hall of Famers (Hank Williams Jr., George Strait), '90s legends (The Chicks, Shania Twain), 21st century standard bearers (Carrie Underwood, Kane Brown) or this decade's breakout stars (Lainey Wilson, Walker Hayes), there's an upcoming, ongoing or recent tour that should be in your wheelhouse.

Tours spilling over from 2022 range from Underwood's Denim & Diamonds Tour to The Judds' Final Tour . For the latter, a star-studded group of the singers she inspired, including Kelsea Ballerini and Ashley McBryde , joined live music phenom Wynonna Judd in celebrating the timeless music she made with her late mother, Naomi.

"The decision to add 15 more shows [for 2023] was a no-brainer for me," Judd shared in a press release. "The fans have been such a gift during my time of grieving and honoring my mother in song. What an amazing season this is. I look so forward to continuing the celebration of the music that has changed my life forever."

There's also a stacked slate of country superstars with Las Vegas residencies. Brooks will hold court in Sin City, as will The Chicks, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert and Keith Urban. Each follow a tradition that at least traces back to Elvis Presley 's first Vegas stay in 1969.

Brooks' initial slate of appearances at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace sold so well that new dates for 2024 will be announced in May 2023.

"You're scared to death... when they tell you that they're going to put on a whole year of shows," Brooks explained in a press statement. "And then... the first day of on-sale... they call you and tell you that the whole year is gone. That's an amazing feeling, as you can imagine. And all of a sudden it hits you - 'they want to extend this!' Well the only thing better than one year at Caesars Palace in Vegas would be two years, right? So I'm there!"

Keep an eye on this list because it will be updated throughout the year with newly-announced tours as well as additional dates for those already listed.

Music Tours We Can't Wait to See in 2023

With 2023 upon us, these are the tours worth saving for.

It’s safe to say that with the arrival of Covid, artists and fans have been craving those special moments that come from the magic of a live show. For more than two years, many artists have been forced to release projects and perform for fans watching virtually at home, but those days have come to an end as tours have started up once again.

Though 2022 certainly saw an honest attempt at normalcy, those in entertainment hope that 2023 will bring a year full of shows and events to make up for lost time. Shondaland is running down all the 2023 music tours we’re most excited about (make sure to keep saving, however, as more artists are sure to announce future tour dates in 2023).

Arctic Monkeys

With the recent release of their seventh studio album, The Car , Arctic Monkeys began their tour in December 2022 but will do the majority of their shows in 2023, beginning their North American leg in August through the fall. The English band always bring suavity to the stage, so fans should be excited to hear them play timeless classics and some new songs off their latest record.

After what feels like a lifetime (almost five years now), Ed Sheeran has announced that he is taking his Mathematics Tour to the United States, bringing some real star power along with him. For the May 6 to September 2 dates, Khalid will join Sheeran, with rapper Russ helping to close out the end of the tour from September 9 to September 23. This tour is definitely a must-see as it is unknown when Sheeran will be in America again, and to sweeten the deal a bit more, Sheeran has already promised a new album as well, which could mean new music for the tour.

As the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year and the hottest act in country music today, Luke Combs is taking his talent global in 2023, launching a 16-country world tour across three different continents. Combs is bringing some serious star power, with artists like Lainey Wilson, Riley Green, and Cody Johnson joining him on various dates on his tour. Combs is already considered a generational talent, so seeing him in person will make a great story to tell your grandchildren around the fire one day.

Taylor Swift

“A journey through the musical eras of my career (past and present!)” — this is the description that Taylor Swift provided fans on social media when she announced her sixth tour, the Eras Tour. For Swifties all over the world, this walk down memory lane will be a celebration of Swift’s dominance over the modern era, which likely means that Swift will be pulling out all the stops every night (like she has done in the past). Her team has already added multiple dates to the North American leg of the tour, and if you have any desire to see Taylor Swift — who has 16 years’ worth of hit songs — on this tour, you better open up a new tab and purchase tickets immediately!

Lewis Capaldi

Due to the arrival of Covid, Lewis Capaldi’s attempt at a global takeover was sadly cut short after he began touring his first album, but he is coming back to take over 2023 (and finally tour North America). With the release of his sophomore album coming in May 2023, this tour will be perfect to see some new songs and the old ones we were all forced to miss out on.

Bruce Springsteen

“It doesn’t feel that long, but, you know, we stayed busy over that time, but still it’s — I’ve got the jones to play live very badly at this point” is what legend Bruce Springsteen had to say on SiriusXM’s E Street Radio in regard to his five-year hiatus from the E Street Band. Springsteen and the band are set to embark on another tour in 2023, beginning in North America in February and continuing into Europe through July. Fans in North America can also rejoice as a second leg of the North American shows was added after the band returns from Europe, which means there will be a plethora of opportunities to pack up and catch Springsteen and the E Street Band on the road.

Dead & Company

All good things must come to an end — this is the feeling that was left for millions of fans as Dead & Company announced that their 2023 tour would be their last appearances together. Composed of members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, and Jeff Chimenti, the band is a spin-off project stemming from the original version of the group, the Grateful Dead. Though this may be the end of this band’s run, Grateful Dead member Mickey Hart has teased future work in a post on Facebook : “I have loved this chapter with Dead & Company, as we got to explore The Music with some new interpreters and different antennas, but we always knew it was just a chapter. The Music never stops.” Since nothing is guaranteed, fans should buy tickets to see these legends now before they move on from this chapter in their lives forever.

Anita Baker

It’s time to rejoice as Anita Baker has announced her first full tour after 28 years away from the spotlight. The eight-time Grammy winner made her announcement on social media , along with a very important message — she will be playing her own catalog of music. This is quite the news as Baker has been without control of her master recordings for an extended period of time. Not only is she taking her power back, she will also be celebrating this monumental victory with her fans on tour in 2023.

Lil Uzi Vert

Despite dreading the spotlight, rapper Lil Uzi Vert surprised his fans by announcing he will launch a 20-city tour starting in March 2023. This marks the first tour by Uzi since 2018, which likely means he will be playing a lot of his newer songs along with the classics. Uzi’s desire to play shows could be stemming from his recent appearances at various festivals, but more information should be coming in the next few weeks regarding his tour.

Honorable Mention: Beyoncé

Though nothing has been confirmed quite yet, there is heavy speculation from many that Beyoncé will go on tour in the summer of 2023. The latest piece of evidence comes from the WACO Theater’s Wearable Art Gala 2022, where a concert ticket package was auctioned off as “a chance to see Beyoncé on her Renaissance Tour.” Nothing is certain, but with Queen Bey’s release of Renaissance , the rumors seem to be leaning toward the truth.

Absolutely the best concert I was ever at, honestly I don't think any other artist could top this. She had such an incredible presence on stage, every eye was on her and her wonderful team. Dua and her dancers moved gracefully and fluidly, with bursts of power and energy. Her vocals were insanely beautiful, every word was sung with such passion and love. Her grand finale of IDGAF and New Rules was simply amazing, with breathtaking choreography and stunning visuals behind her. The band sounded great and the backup vocalists and dancers were on point for every minute. Without a doubt in my mind it was the very best live performance I have ever seen, and I don't think anything in the future will ever compare to it. Dua Lipa, Olympia Theatre, Dublin. Monday 9th April 2018.

A mind-blowing live personality, a revelation! A huge spontaneous crush! Power, cheekiness, everything that can reinstate one in the love for women and music. A never again to be missed!

Ethereal, hopeful, humble, powerful... just absolute ART. The show was focused on everyone, a celebration of culture, love, identities, and struggle. I love that she made it more about the group on stage as a whole than just her- Tons of stage presence nonetheless. Beautiful band, beautiful backup singers. The lighting was amazing and the stage was so well done and simple. Solange holds her own and I cannot wait to see her when she comes back. You can tell she was feeling it when she got down on the left side of the stage and started singing to us, beautiful moment that reminds me why I love going to live shows/concerts. Flying Lotus was an absolute trip as well. I wish she would've brought Kelela out on this date... Scales is such a beautiful song and I'd of loved to see it live with them two.

Moses Sumney

Moses was amazing. Very enigmatic but still approachable, and he had a lot of fun with the crowd. The performance was incredible, his voice is truly something to behold. I've listened to "Worth It" a million times but still got chills when he hit the high note. Would highly recommend seeing Moses live, especially before he gets really famous and expensive to see.

Absolutely incredible!! Khalid was only my second concert ever and it has inspired me to see as many as I can. It felt like every song was played at 250% and it sounded incredible. The band was phenomenal and I could really feel the music. The crowd was happy and everyone was having a good time. I'd see him again if I could.

Mindblowing. Asskicking. No holds barred. Take no prisoners. These are the words that come to mind when I think about a Foals show. The first time I saw Foals was only after I had just listened to their song, "Spanish Sahara". Just that one song and my mind was made up. I needed to see them. Turns out that one song was merely a comma in the string of punctuations this band is capable of creating. That song is probably the tamest one they played, and I couldn't be more grateful. A strobe light show starts off their performance to the band members entering one by one. Then lead singer Yannis Phillippakis takes the stage, his signature black Travis Bean guitar in hand. He had a wireless setup for that guitar - a tipoff that I immediately recognized. This show was about to get insane. They ran through a few of their hits from their first album, "Mathletics", such as "Red Socks Pugie", and "Cassius". The crowd was in absolute hysterics. Ebbing and flowing with the music, people crowd surfing and ramming into each other. The song progressed into songs off their sophomore release, "Total Life Forever", where they played "Blue Blood", the aforementioned "Spanish Sahara", and the amped-up "Two Steps, Twice". Then mayhem. Yannis runs top speed and propels himself into the crowd (who were miraculously ready and caught him). All the while, Yannis continues playing his guitar. What happened next was a thing of beauty. Somehow, Yannis makes his way to the side of the venue and proceeds to climb up to the balcony level, and again, launches himself off into the crowd. In all my years, I've never seen someone with such a low fear of death or injury. Since this first performance I've seen Foals a number of times and they never disappoint. Even when they were added as a last minute addition to fill in for a band that canceled for Governor's Ball 2013, they managed to win over everyone at the festival, some saying they were the highlight of the entire event. Easily one of the best live acts I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Without a doubt, I have never danced, jumped, and sweat so much than when I am at a Foals show. Do yourself a favor, drop any plans you might have and go see Foals. Well worth it.

Queen and Adam Lambert kick off tour with pomp, vigor and the spirit of Freddie Mercury

music tours usa 2023

BALTIMORE – Who knew we needed the dazzling showmanship, the unmatched catalog of layered pop rock and the undiminished musicianship of Queen + Adam Lambert this much?

The band rooted by original guitarist (and noted astrophysicist) Sir Brian May and suave drummer Roger Taylor hasn’t played stateside in four years, when its Rhapsody tour first launched.

On Wednesday, at the first of two shows at Baltimore’s CFG Bank Arena, the Queen + Lambert extravaganza reignited for a 23-date tour that will run through November in all of its garish glory.

Here are some highlights from the tour kickoff, a 27-song master class in potent songs and delicate homage with the magnetic Lambert its humble ringleader.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

What songs do Queen + Adam Lambert play on the 2023 Rhapsody tour?

Playing off the futuristic feel of the staging – lots of chrome and robots on video screens – the band kicked off the two-hour-plus show with “Radio Ga Ga,” the hand-clapping 1984 hit that found the platinum-haired Lambert strutting the stage in a silver breastplate and cape .

Though the band brought the Rhapsody production to Europe last summer, the set list has been jiggled and peppered with some different songs, including the rough-riffing “Stone Cold Crazy” – played for the first time since 2018 – and the magnificently theatrical “The Show Must Go On.”

Queen also unveiled “Is This the World We Created…?” from 1984’s “The Works” album, which has never been played in the decade that Lambert has fronted the band. Sitting at the end of a catwalk with only May, 76, on acoustic guitar, Lambert showcased the purity of his versatile voice on the ballad.

The multigenerational crowd also lapped up plenty of well-worn classic rock radio staples. “Another One Bites the Dust” needed only its opening bass notes from Neil Fairclough for recognition; “Somebody to Love” spotlighted a soulful Lambert spreading his multi-octave voice across the song; and “Bohemian Rhapsody” wrapped the pre-encore set instilled with Lambert’s dramatic entrance from beneath the stage, May sporting a mirrored jumpsuit amid a blizzard of lights and the original Queen video for the song employed to handle the tricky operatic passage in the song.

How does Freddie Mercury factor into the Queen + Adam Lambert tour?

The naysayers who contend that Queen has been nothing but a cover band with Lambert at the helm need to take a seat. Lambert’s respect for Mercury has always been palpable, and at Wednesday’s show, you could see his subtle nods to the original Queen frontman, who died in 1991.

Mercury surely would have swooned at the ornately decorated rotating motorcycle that Lambert sat atop – complete with a crotch cam – for the pairing of “Bicycle Race” and “Fat Bottomed Girls” and grinned at Lambert’s shoulder shimmies worthy of Liza Minnelli in her prime during an adrenalized “Don’t Stop Me Now.”

But Mercury was remembered in a more direct way when Lambert, 41, praised the “two rock ‘n’ roll legends” sharing the stage with him and continued with, “We do this with Freddie in our hearts, and I know he’s in your heart.”

A couple of songs later, May, as he has done on past tours, took a solo turn at the edge of the catwalk to sing “Love of My Life” in a tender voice. It was a chill-inducing moment when he asked the crowd to hold up their lighted phones (“In the old days it used to be candles,” he joked) while footage of Mercury crooning the ballad appeared in split screen with May on the overhead curved video screen.

Who else is playing with Queen + Adam Lambert?

While the sweetly grinning May mesmerized with his distinctive guitar lines throughout the show and Taylor, dapper in a black tie and vest, steamrolled through demanding songs at age 74, the multilayered construction of the band’s songs require a bit more of a lift.

Joining May, Taylor, Lambert and Fairclough were longtime keyboardist and musical director Spike Edney and percussionist Tyler Warren, who frequently jammed alongside Taylor on these musically precise classics.

With a combination of exceptional lighting and voluminous slices of lasers, the scorched-earth singing of Lambert and the continued expert presentation from May and Taylor, this Rhapsody tour doesn’t feel like a victory lap, but, rather, a deeper solidifying of Queen’s legacy.

10 concert tours to see this summer

Hang out in the sunshine with a variety of live shows

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

The Foo Fighters perform a concert in Washington, D.C.

After months of iffy weather across much of the globe, summer is nearly here in North America. And, lucky for its residents, many standout artists are looking to take advantage of the sunshine with some live tours.

Alanis Morissette

One of Canada's most well-known musical exports is hitting the road again. Alanis Morissette will navigate venues across the United States during her "Triple Moon Tour," which will feature 33 dates running from June to August. Morissette will not go it alone, though, as she will be accompanied on stage by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts alongside singer Morgan Wade. Morissette released her tenth LP in 2022, but the "Triple Moon Tour" will mostly be in tribute to the 25th anniversary of her fourth studio album, "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie," which was released to critical acclaim in 1998.

While "Family Guy" may have once described him as "just some guy with a hat," singer Jason Mraz is the recipient of two Grammy Awards and remains one of the most popular guitarists and singers of the last decade. Beginning in June, Mraz will venture on his "Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride Summer 2024," with shows in more than 25 locations in the United States and Canada through August. The artist behind the hit single "I'm Yours" named his upcoming tour after his 2023 LP of the same name, his eighth studio album overall and his first in three years.

Chicago/Earth, Wind & Fire

Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire , two of the most popular bands of the 1970s, are combining for a mega-concert journey, the "Heart & Soul Tour," from July to September. Each leg of the tour will feature the "timeless music of Chicago and the iconic catalog of Earth, Wind & Fire," according to the band's website , and will "culminate in an encore performance with both bands on stage together." This timeless music will likely feature hits from both groups, including iconic soul soundtracks like "September" and "Shining Star" from Earth Wind & Fire, and rock ballads like "You're the Inspiration" from Chicago. Combined, both groups have won 11 Grammy Awards and sold more than 200 million albums.

Melissa Etheridge/Jewel

Singer Melissa Etheridge has won dozens of accolades and played thousands of venues over her decades-long career, and now she is getting ready to head back on the road. She is teaming with singer Jewel to launch the duo's summer 2024 tour . The tour covers the majority of the summer and runs from July to the beginning of October, with locations throughout the United States and Canada. Etheridge, perhaps best known for her 1993 single "Come to My Window," last released a studio album in 2021, but does not appear anywhere near the end of her journey.

Mannequin Pussy

Philly's punk rock icons are returning to the stage with a new tour. Mannequin Pussy will be embarking on their "I Got Heaven Tour" throughout July and August; the group will begin with shows in the U.K. and Europe before heading home to the United States and Canada, where they will play a series of shows before crisscrossing back to Europe again. Mannequin Pussy's music is "built on big emotions and inside jokes," said The New York Times , and the group is touring to promote their most recent studio album and fourth LP, "I Got Heaven," which was released earlier this year.

Foo Fighters

Dave Grohl and his band the Foo Fighters will be traveling down a sonic highway when they embark on their "Everything or Nothing at All Tour" in July and August. The tour comes a year after the group released their 11th LP, "But Here We Are," dedicated to both Grohl's mother Virginia and deceased band member Taylor Hawkins . The Foo Fighters will be playing shows in Manchester, Glasgow, London and other cities in the United Kingdom before playing a series of concerts in the United States. Once in America, the group, which was born out of the iconic 1990s grunge band Nirvana, will play 14 shows in 11 different cities.

Undoubtedly one of the most unique bands on this list, the psychedelic rock group Phish has formed one of the most loyal followings in music over a 40-year career (Drew Carey "talked to God" after seeing them, the television host said on X ). Now, Phish will grace the stage again with their summer 2024 tour in the United States, which will run from July to the beginning of September and will coincide with the release of their 16th LP, "Evolve," set to drop on July 12. This will mark the group's first official studio album in four years, though they did release a 2022 album under a different name.

Green Day released their 14th studio album, "Saviors," earlier this year, and they are not wasting any time promoting it. The punk rock icons are venturing on a concert tour of the same name from July 19 to Sept. 28. The band will play their popular LPs "Dookie" and "American Idiot" in their entirety, and it is very much a global endeavor: Green Day will play venues in Spain, France, Germany, the U.K., Austria and more before crossing the pond to play shows across the United States and Canada. The band is keeping busy now, as they recently headlined a UN-backed climate concert in San Francisco.

Kings of Leon

Many of the biggest names touring this summer are rock bands, and Kings of Leon are no exception. The Nashville-based group will head out on a summer 2024 tour from August to mid-October, beginning in European destinations such as the U.K., Austria, Ireland and France before playing 27 cities in the United States and Canada. The tour will be supporting Kings of Leon's ninth studio album, "Can We Please Have Fun," which was released this past February. Notably, this is the band's first album to not be released via their original recording label, RCA.

You can usher in the end of the summer on a high note by seeing one of the most notable R&B singers of all time, as Usher is embarking on his "Past Present Future" tour beginning at the end of August. The singer is riding high after a notable performance in February at Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, the city where Usher also held multiple residencies totaling 100 shows. Taylor Swift catches a lot of heat over jet travel. Here's her actual impact

H ow did Taylor Swift become a lightning rod in the debate over carbon dioxide emissions, and just how much does her private jet contribute to global warming?

The Eras Tour superstar is known for boosting economies, being taught at universities like Harvard , rerecording her music and breaking records with new album releases including "The Tortured Poets Department." She has also gained attention for flying her private jet (she sold her second one) around the world for concert stops, to do business and meet with friends in New York, rehearse in Los Angeles, see her family in Nashville and visit her boyfriend Travis Kelce in Kansas City, Missouri.

Conversation began in 2022

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

In the summer of 2022, Kylie Jenner posted a photo (that's since been deleted) of her and Travis Scott's private planes with the caption, “You wanna take mine or yours?” The backlash led the Yard , a content and public relations firm, to publish a study of which celebrities produced the most private jet emissions that year. The publication put Miss Americana as the top of the list.

The Yard has added a disclaimer to the top of the study that reads in part: "Following the release of our data, Rolling Stone contacted each of the celebrities' representatives for comment. Taylor Swift's representative said the following: 'Taylor’s jet is loaned out regularly to other individuals. To attribute most or all of these trips to her is blatantly incorrect.'"

The jet tracking student

Amid the hype in 2022, a student studying information technology at University of Central Florida (UCF) started to track Swift's two jets. Jack Sweeney set up an automated system that posted updates when the billionaire's private planes departed and landed. His account took off during Swift's trips to NFL games as fans checked to see if she would attend to root on the Kansas City Chiefs .

The increased attention outraged Swifties who said Sweeney invaded the tortured poet's privacy and posed a security threat .

"It's all public record, you have this information at your fingertips," he says over Zoom. "There's an interest by fans, but others are upset. They think I'm stalking (Swift) when I'm just sharing public information."

His fascination with tracking planes began during the coronavirus pandemic in 2021. Sweeney looked into Elon Musk's planes and posted information about his jets. At one point, he says, Musk offered him $5,000 to shut down the X/Twitter account. The UCF student talked to a journalist instead, and the deal was off the table.

Musk, the owner of X/Twitter, banned Sweeney's accounts. With his Instagram account garnering close to 100,000 followers last winter, Meta also pulled the plug.

Swift's team sent Sweeney two cease-and-desist letters saying the tracking was endangering the singer and a "life-or-death matter." The student hired a lawyer and after releasing a public letter and doing some interviews , the back-and-forth grew cold.

When asked about security, the Sweeney says, "Other people have done a similar type of thing where they're posting about her planes. When she flew to Brazil, the news was livestreaming at the airport. If my tracking goes away, there's still going to be stuff like that, and she travels with a security team. The airport is one of the most secure places."

Swift sold one of her two private jets at the beginning of the year. An animation shows the 2023 trips of Swift's two jets that added up to 178,000 miles, emitting 1,200 tons of carbon dioxide. The majority of those flights were to Los Angles, New York, Nashville and concert stops for the 2023 Eras Tour .

If you search for lists of top carbon-emitting celebrities, there are conflicting reports. MyClimate ranked a list of celebrities in 2023 by their carbon emissions and didn't put the Eras Tour singer in the top 20 , giving Travis Scott, Kim Kardashian and Elon Musk the highest ratings.

Swift's impact on the environment

Payless Power did a conservative prediction of Swift's jet travel for 2024 including her 86 shows in 27 Asian, Australian, European and North American cities.

"The goal of the study was to look into renewable energy," says Adi Sachdeva, a project manager with Payless Power. "Her tour is one of the biggest tours that have ever existed."

Using data from the Myclimate Carbon Tracker, the Texas-based company created a report projecting the jet's carbon emissions, not including any detours the singer may make between stops.

They noted Swift will fly an estimated 43,688 kilometers and emit 511,154 kilograms of CO2 for the Eras Tour. To put this into perspective, it's the equivalent of driving 1,307,311 miles in a gasoline-powered passenger vehicle. It's also equivalent to the emissions made from 67 households in an entire year.

Although this may seem like a lot for the singer conducting a record-breaking tour across the world, the report states her 2024 travel still doesn't come close to the top celebrity emitters of 2023: Travis Scott (6.06 million kilograms of CO2), Kim Kardashian (5.86 million) and Elon Musk (4.56 million).

"We wanted to make comparisons to individuals, in general," Sachdeva says. "A lot of times you'll see these large numbers online of a private jet but without seeing what that means, people will go with the numbers that seem very large without knowing their own emissions."

An environmentalist weighs in

Nick Loris, the vice president of public policy for C3 Solutions , a conservative climate coalition looking to improve energy abundance and energy affordability, helps to put Swift's jet-setting impact into perspective.

"While aviation is important and private aviation is a pretty high contributor to the industry, it's still a relatively small percentage of overall global greenhouse gas emissions," he says. "Some of the top emissions are caused by the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat and transportation, so coal, oil and to a lesser extent natural gas. Buildings use a lot of energy, and we primarily use gasoline and diesel to get around. Industry and agriculture are other fairly big contributors.”

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, aircraft accounts for 9% of carbon-related emissions in the United States. Private jets produce at least 10 times more emissions than commercial flights per passenger.

Loris notes the reality is Swift can't fly commercial. It would lead to a surfeit of issues with logistics and security; consider the circle of security guards that surround her on red carpets.

So what are the solutions?

Loris says Swift's overall impact to emissions, in 2022, was about 0.000000225% after dividing her emissions, 8,300 metric tons, by global greenhouse gas emissions of 36.8 gigatons. Her percentage for 2023 and 2024 may be slightly higher with her tour travel.

Tree Paine, Swift's publicist, told Bloomberg News in 2023 the singer-songwriter purchased more than double the credits needed to offset all her travel .

"There are a few challenges with carbon credits," Loris says. "There are a lot of good activities that result from carbon offset projects, things like reforestation projects, different types of direct air capture technologies or investments in renewable power. The challenge is there are also a lot of junk carbon offsets where the project may have been built anyway and therefore there was no additional reduction in emissions. It's also important that carbon offset projects are measurable and durable. Let's say you purchased carbon offsets for a reforestation project in California, and then all of those burn up in a forest wildfire. That would release pollution and CO2 into the atmosphere and undo the carbon offset."

Loris says with all the increased attention, the singer could become a vocal advocate for jet-setting solutions and an investor in new and innovative technology such as sustainable aviation fuels or direct air capture (essentially a carbon-sucking vacuum).

Swift is on the European leg of the Eras Tour . She has shows in 15 more cities across the continent before heading to North America in the fall.

The Best Places to Celebrate Juneteenth

Atlanta's Juneteenth Parade is just one of many events across the state you can attend to honor Juneteenth.

Emancipation Day. Freedom Day. Jubilee Day. Juneteenth is known by many names. On June 19, 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger delivered General Order No. 3 to the enslaved people and residents of Galveston, Texas , ending slavery in the state.

This order came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863 and declared the end of slavery in the Confederate states. The Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery throughout the U.S., but in December 1865, the ratification of the 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the country.

What does Juneteenth celebrate?

Celebrations for Juneteenth began in 1866. Some people held parties, parades, prayer gatherings or cookouts. In 1980, Juneteenth first became a state holiday in Texas, and over time, other states and Washington, D.C., slowly began to recognize the date as a holiday too.

The interest in Juneteenth becoming a national holiday gained momentum following the nationwide popularity of the Black Lives Matter movement. After a quick debate in Congress, Juneteenth was designated the newest federal holiday on June 17, 2021. It's the first federal holiday to be established since 1983, when Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday was formally declared a holiday.

Whether it's a music festival, a parade, a cookout or a march, there are plenty of ways to honor Juneteenth across the country. U.S. News compiled a list of the top destinations to celebrate Juneteenth in 2023.

Fort Worth, Texas

The campaign to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday began in Fort Worth thanks to activist Opal Lee. As a child, Lee witnessed a group of 500 white supremacists vandalize and burn her family's home to the ground. This pivotal moment led her to a life of teaching and activism. In 2016, at age 89, she began a walking campaign starting in her hometown of Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., in hopes of getting Juneteenth recognized as a federal holiday.

Lee walked 2.5 miles a day, symbolizing the years it took for Black Texans to be free from slavery after Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. While her initial effort failed, she relaunched the campaign in 2019 but had to suspend her efforts once COVID-19 began to spread. She was present when President Joe Biden signed the legislation in 2021 making Juneteenth a federal holiday.

Lee's hometown, Fort Worth, holds several events during the month of June. Travelers can participate in Opal's Walk for Freedom for a fee to commemorate her historic walk on June 19. Participants and spectators can admire floats and vehicles decorated in their Juneteenth best as they make their way down the 2.5-mile route.

Visit the Amon Carter Museum of American Art to see its new exhibit called "Emancipation: The Unfinished Project of Liberation." The exhibition features artwork depicting freedom for Black Americans and the legacy of the Civil War in 2023. The exhibition will be on display until July 9.

Meanwhile, the annual Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant on June 3 provides a platform for young Black women to boost their self-esteem and self-expression. Looking for more family-friendly events? The Your Voice Unleashed Concert on June 10 will feature performances by an array of teenagers from all different backgrounds.

Although the National Juneteenth Museum isn't slated to open until June 2025, the institution will host its inaugural Uniting Voices Speaker Series event on June 15 with the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, Bryan Stevenson.

Think you're a grill master? Try your hand at the Freedom First BBQ Cookoff on June 30 or sample various types of Afro culture cuisine at the Taste of Juneteenth food festival on July 1.

Washington, D.C., has its own history with Juneteenth. On June 19, 1968, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Poor People's Campaign held a Solidarity Day rally on the National Mall. In 2005, the city began celebrating its own Emancipation Day in recognition of April 16, 1862 – the day slavery was abolished in the District.

This year's Juneteenth celebrations in Washington are buzzing with activity.

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture is hosting several events, including a Juneteenth Community Day, which will feature indoor and outdoor activities for families on June 17. Also set for that same day is a 30-minute performance of "History Alive!: USCT: Juneteenth: What It Means, and Why We Celebrate." The program will present stories of Black people in the military and more about General Order No. 3. Visitors can also attend "A Seat at the Table: Heritage Rooted in the Earth" to learn more about scientist George Washington Carver and how Black farmers and fishers kept property and businesses after the Emancipation order. Travelers should note free timed-entry passes are required to visit the museum.

Meanwhile, the National Archives will be displaying both the original Emancipation Proclamation and General Order No. 3 on Juneteenth weekend. The museum will also host a family day with kid-friendly arts, crafts and activities on June 17. The Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery will open its "One Life: Frederick Douglass" exhibit on June 16, while the Anacostia Community Museum will host its Juneteenth Freedom Celebration on June 19.

Want to stay active? Check out the fourth annual Juneteenth Half Marathon & 10K. The races take place along the Civil War Defenses of Washington trail, starting and finishing at Fort Stanton Park. For more family-centric activities, stop by the Celebrate Juneteenth festival on the Brookland Arts Walk on June 18. Attendees can enjoy food, music and shopping at local Black businesses.

For music lovers, the Home Rule Music Festival gets underway on June 16. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free outdoor viewing of the movie "Miss Juneteenth" on June 16.

Jarell Johnson sings a song during a Juneteenth Celebration on June 19, 2020 in Baltimore, Maryland

Located about 40 miles north of Washington, D.C., Baltimore is a vibrant port city filled with delicious seafood, culture and Black history. While slavery did not end in Maryland until 1864, Baltimore was home to the largest free Black community in a U.S. city during the 1860s.

Thanks to its large Black population, the city became a hot spot for jazz music; many notable jazz musicians, including Billie Holiday, Eubie Blake and Chick Webb, lived or were born in Baltimore. Along Pennsylvania Avenue, the Royal Theater was once a popular venue that became part of the infamous Chitlin' Circuit: spaces that catered to Black audiences and performers.

Considering the city's ties to so many legendary musicians, it's no surprise that many of the Juneteenth events happening around town are music-centric.

The 46th annual AFRAM festival is a two-day event starting on June 17. During the Juneteenth weekend, enjoy live music from artists like The Isley Brothers and Ty Dolla $ign on top of fashion and food at Druid Hill Park.

You'll find live jazz at the B&O Railroad Museum's Jazz on the Rails concert series. The Juneteenth celebration will also pay homage to past, present and future railroad employees and to the industry. The Baltimore Museum of Art will offer free admission on June 18 so visitors can see the exhibit "The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century," which captures the influence of hip-hop on art as the music genre celebrates 50 years.

Outside of the many Juneteenth music festivities, the Walters Art Museum will host a "Juneteenth: Honoring Food, Traditions, and Histories" talk on June 15. The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture will host a daylong Juneteenth celebration on June 19. Enjoy free admission to the museum, live performances, artwork and talks.

Head to the Visit Baltimore website to find more details on the various events or consult the Visit Maryland site to see events across the state.

Alexandria, Virginia

Tour at the Freedom House Museum

Michael Kariktan | Courtesy of Visit Alexandria

Located about 10 miles from Washington, D.C., Alexandria was once home to one of the largest slave-trading posts in the country, Franklin and Armfield. Despite the huge slave-trading firm located in the city, Alexandria had several free Black residents. The first free Black community called "The Bottoms" was located in the southwestern part of the city, and by 1810 a new neighborhood known as Hayti was created in the eastern portion of the city. The free Black population continued to grow in Alexandria until 1846, when the city retroceded from D.C. to rejoin the state of Virginia.

Alexandria has plenty for travelers to do during Juneteenth.

Take a tour of the city on the "Black History in Alexandria" Bus Tour hosted by the Manumission Tour Company. The two-hour guided tour takes visitors on a journey through the area to see historical sites such as the Freedom House Museum and the Alfred Street Baptist Church. The company also hosts several other tours around Alexandria focused on Black history as well.

The Carlyle House, named for businessman John Carlyle who helped found the city, will host its annual Juneteenth celebration collaborating with The Athenaeum, a local arts organization, on June 17. Attendees will be able to learn more about Juneteenth with hands-on activities and poetry readings.

The Washington Revels Jubilee Voices' Juneteenth concert is slated for June 19 at Market Square. Hear songs exploring the triumphs and tribulations of the Black community. You can also visit the Alexandria Black History Museum, which reopened in March 2023 after a three-year hiatus. The exhibit "Preserving Their Names: The Black Lives Remembered Collection" has more than 300 images and artifacts. Or, stop by the Freedom House Museum, which pays homage to enslaved and free Black people who lived in or were trafficked through the city.

Check out the Visit Alexandria website for more information.

Philadelphia is famously the home of the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall , where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were drafted and signed, but the city also played an important role in Black history. The City of Brotherly Love was once a stop on the Underground Railroad, and it's where one of the first Black churches – the African Methodist Episcopal Church – was established in the U.S.

The Johnson House Historic Site, which was an Underground Railroad stop, will host its 17th annual Philadelphia Juneteenth Festival on June 17. Enjoy African drumming, historical reenactments, vendors, food and talks during this celebration.

On June 18, attend the Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade, which draws more than 25,000 spectators yearly. You'll see floats, bands and dance troupes make their way down to Malcolm X Park, where the Philadelphia Juneteenth Festival will take place. Festivalgoers can shop at local Black businesses, sample some of Philly's best food and explore art exhibits.

The Wawa Welcome America festival will kick off its countdown to Independence Day with a variety of Juneteenth celebrations. Experience a special live performance by DJ Spinderella with her tribute to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, then enjoy food and family-friendly activities at the Juneteenth Block Party at the African American Museum in Philadelphia. The museum will also offer free admission with online registration. Members of the parade perform during the 48th Annual Juneteenth Day Festival on June 19, 2019 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

While Opal Lee is considered the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," longtime Milwaukee resident Rev. Dr. Ronald Myers helped spearhead the modern movement of Juneteenth becoming a national holiday by founding the National Association of Juneteenth Lineage. The organization played a critical role in getting both the U.S. House and Senate to pass legislation recognizing Juneteenth as Juneteenth Independence Day in 1997. Myers' activism helped encourage 43 states and Washington, D.C., to create their own Juneteenth celebrations, but it would be over two decades before Juneteenth became a federal holiday.

The city of Milwaukee 's Juneteenth event is considered one of the oldest celebrations in the country. The area began hosting its yearly event in 1971 after then-Northcott Neighborhood House staffer Margaret Rogers attended a Juneteenth event in Georgia and inspired a local celebration.

Now in its 52nd year, the event is still run by Northcott Neighborhood House. This year's event theme is "I Am Juneteenth." Become a part of Juneteenth history by attending one of the many events the city has going on during the holiday weekend. More than 40,000 spectators attended the event last year.

Dance the night away at the Freedom Ball on June 10. The ball pays homage to the past, present and future of Juneteenth in the city and includes live music, food and a silent auction. The annual Juneteenth Jubilee Parade and Festival will be held on June 19. Spectators can expect to see floats, marching bands and dance groups throughout the parade route. Afterward, enjoy food, dancing, sports activities and music at the street festival.

The Windy City was founded by Jean-Baptiste Point du Sable, a Black settler. Chicago was home to a stable African American population during the Reconstruction period, but it wasn't until the Great Migration that the city's Black population exploded. About 500,000 Black people migrated to the city between 1916 and 1970.

Many famous Black notables, such as Mae Jemison, Ida B. Wells and John H. Johnson, have called Chicago home, and there are plenty of celebrations planned for Juneteenth.

The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center – the oldest independent African American museum in the country – is hosting a Juneteenth Community BBQ on June 19 featuring food, live music, a petting zoo and a health pavilion. Along with its Juneteenth events, the museum is home to several notable exhibits, including "Diaspora Stories: Selections from the CCH Pounder Collection," which features curated and personally selected African diasporic artwork from the Emmy-nominated actress' private collection. Through artifacts and storytelling, visitors can learn about Harold Washington, the first Black mayor of Chicago at "The Harold Washington Story" exhibit.

The 1865 Coalition is hosting a three-day 1865 Fest in Garfield Park on Juneteenth weekend. The event will salute Black military members and fathers through educational workshops, family activities, live music and food. Known as the city's "Black Metropolis," the Bronzeville neighborhood will be hosting a Juneteenth celebration on June 17. The event's theme is "Strengthening the roots," and it will feature historians, artwork, dancing, food and vendors.

The Museum of Contemporary Art along with Refine Collective will hold the third annual Juneteenth Freedom Market on June 16. The market is slated to feature more than 50 Black-owned businesses, a performance from the 40+ Double Dutch Club, artwork, food and drinks.

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Juneteenth art wall in Tulsa, Oklahoma

Courtesy of Tulsa Juneteenth

In 1921, the Tulsa district of Greenwood, nicknamed "Black Wall Street" for its prosperous Black community, was burned to the ground by a mob of white rioters. Hundreds of homes and dozens of businesses, churches, schools and stores were destroyed; an estimated 300 people were killed. It was the setting for one of the worst race massacres in U.S. history.

In recent years, the city of Tulsa has invested in projects such as the Greenwood Rising museum to bring attention to this massacre and showcase the heartbreak and resilience of the Greenwood community. The 1921 Black Wall Street Memorial pays homage to the Black-owned businesses that were destroyed during the riot. Visitors to the city can also take a guided tour of the area through organizations such as the John Hope Franklin Center for Reconciliation, Tulsa Tours or The Real Black Wall Street Tour.

This year's three-day Juneteenth festival event, which takes place from June 15 to 17, includes a block party, a 5K and fun run, art exhibits, live music, workshops and more.

Oakland, California

Protesters march towards downtown Oakland during a Juneteenth rally and march at the Port of Oakland on June 19, 2020 in Oakland, California

Sitting across the bay from San Francisco , Oakland was once the home of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. Formed in 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, the Black Panthers made history by empowering Black Americans to become more self-sufficient. While the organization has been disbanded for almost 40 years, travelers can still visit landmarks such as murals and museums around the city.

In celebration of Juneteenth, the city is set to host several events honoring the challenges and successes of the Black community. Afrocentric Oakland will kick off its annual Fam Bam Oakland Juneteenth Festival on June 17 with food, wellness workshops, family-friendly activities and vendors.

Want to learn more about Oakland? Take the Black Liberation Walking tour on June 17. You'll learn more about local historical figures such as Delilah Beasley, who was the first African American woman to have a column for the Oakland Tribune; she also published a book about Black pioneers who were left out of the history books and historical Black spaces around the area.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Kremlin trying to 'invoke memory of Cuban missile crisis' after Putin threat

The Kremlin is attempting to invoke historical memories of the Cuban missile crisis by announcing a naval visit to Havana, a leading thinktank has said. This comes after Vladimir Putin warned he could supply weapons to other nations to strike Western countries yesterday.

More than 50 missiles and drones were shot down over Ukraine overnight, the country's general staff reports.

It said Russian Tu-95 bombers released five cruise missiles - which were all shot down - while 53 Iranian-made Shahed drones were launched from Russian territory, of which 48 were downed.

They were shot down over the Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Odesa, Kharkiv, Kyiv and Khmelnytskyi regions, the general staff said.

Russia has not responded to the claims.

Russian naval vessels will making port in Cuba is an attempt to invoke the historical memory of the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, according to a leading thinktank.

The US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted the Cuban ministry of the revolutionary armed forces' announcement yesterday that four Russian northern fleet vessels would make an official visit to the port of Havana between 12-17 June.

ISW said the move was "likely part of a larger effort to invoke the historical memory of the Cuban Missile Crisis as part of Russia's reflexive control campaign to encourage US self-deterrence".

Reuters separately reported that a senior US official claimed that the Russian vessels may also stop in Venezuela on an unspecified date in Summer 2024.

The Russian ministry of defence stated that Russia’s objective is to ensure a Russian naval presence in "operationally important areas of the far ocean zone."

The vessels include the 'Admiral Gorshkov' frigate, the 'Kazan' nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine, the 'Academic Pashin' replenishment oiler, and the 'Nikolai Chiker' rescue tug.

"Russian media noted that the Admiral Gorshkov is carrying Zircon hypersonic missiles, which the Kremlin has touted as capable of carrying a nuclear warhead," ISW said, although the Cubans specifically claimed that none of the vessels were doing so.

"The Kremlin likely hopes that the clear allusion to the Cuban missile crisis and the inclusion of a reportedly nuclear weapons–capable ship will force the West to engage in self-deterrence," it added.

"The Kremlin likely coordinated the announcement of the Russian navy's port calls in Cuba with Putin's threats to provide long-range strike capabilities to unspecified actors for strikes against the West, as both activities can instil fear in the West."

Joe Biden will meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in France to discuss a $225m (£175m) weapons package on the sidelines of D-Day anniversary events.

It will be their first face-to-face talks since the Ukrainian president visited Washington in December, when the two faced off with Republican opposition to more Ukraine aid.

The pair will meet again next week at a G7 summit in Italy, as rich nations discuss using Russian assets frozen after the Ukraine invasion to provide $50bn for Ukraine.

Mr Biden yesterday drew a link between the Second World War battle against tyranny and Ukraine's war with Russia, calling Russian President Vladimir Putin a "dictator".

Hello and welcome back to our coverage of the war in Ukraine.

We'll be bringing you live updates throughout the day, including a speech from Vladimir Putin later this morning.

That's it for our live coverage of the war in Ukraine for today.

By Nicole Johnston, Asia correspondent in Beijing

Putin's St Petersburg summit comes right out of the same playbook as China's President Xi Jinping.

So how do you get a read on China's geo-political thinking? One way is by wading through the dry and detailed pronouncements of its president, that's where the nuggets are.

In 2022, Xi said: "The world today is undergoing major changes, unseen in a century.

"The most important characteristic of the world is chaos and the trend is likely to continue."

In the world according to Xi, the time is right to reorder global governance with China at its pinnacle, where it belongs. His view is that the US anchored world order is breaking down.

Many countries in the global south are on board with China, chaffing at the dominance of the US led international system and ready to countenance a shake-up.

Russia is in lock step with China.

Both countries need each other. Though Russia needs China more, for trade and diplomatic cover.

In this great power rivalry, the China-Russian axis could draw in other regional disrupters like Iran and North Korea.

If that happens it will be a formidable alliance based on hostility towards the US, sympathy for Russia, a deep fear of subversion and in the case of China, a relentless goal to unify with Taiwan.

Ukraine's main hydropower company says it has initiated proceedings to secure damages for Russia's destruction of the Kakhovka dam and power station a year ago today.

State-run Ukrhydroenergo said it estimates the damage to be around €2.5bn (£2.12bn).

The explosion of the dam on 6 June 2023 - which sent huge amounts of water across swathes of southern Ukraine and left thousands of people without drinking water - was met with global outcry and accusations of a war crime.

"The company's actions aim to compensate for the losses caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant," Ukrhydroenergo said in a statement.

"The company believes that initiating international arbitration process is the most promising way to compensate for the losses."

The firm said Vladimir Putin, his government and other authorised bodies had been informed.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska have arrived in Normandy for an event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

French President Emmanuel Macron greeted the Ukrainian leader with a hug as he arrived, and the president was applauded as he went to take his place inside the event.

Several other political figures including UK defence minister Grant Shapps embraced Mr Zelenskyy as they greeted him.

Earlier, the Ukrainian president said he was "honoured" to participate in the anniversary event and said he would also take part in "important events and meetings aimed at strengthening our country".

"This event and day serve as a reminder of the courage and determination demonstrated in the pursuit of freedom and democracy," he said.

"Allies defended Europe's freedom then, and Ukrainians do so now. Unity prevailed then, and true unity can prevail today."

Earlier today we reported claims by Russian officials that Ukrainian drones hit an oil refinery and fuel depot in Russian border regions.

Rostov regional governor Vasily Golubev said an overnight drone attack struck the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, causing a fire to erupt.

Meanwhile the governor for Belgorod, a Russian border region which has come under frequent Ukrainian fire during the war, said a drone hit an oil depot and caused an explosion.

No casualties were reported in either attack.

The trial of a US soldier accused of stealing is under way in Russia's far eastern city of Vladivostok.

Staff Sergeant Gordon Black flew to the city to see his girlfriend last month but was arrested after she accused him of stealing from her, US and Russian officials said.

The 34-year-old, who was on leave at the time, faces up to five years in prison if found guilty.

The US army said the soldier had not been given official clearance to travel to Russia's far east.

According to Russian news agency RIA, Sgt Black will give evidence during the trial and respond to the allegations against him.

He has been cooperating with authorities, the report said.

Following today's court session, Sgt Black's girlfriend, Alexandra Vashchuk, told reporters "it was a simple domestic dispute" during which the soldier "became aggressive and attacked" her.

"He then stole money from my wallet and I didn't give him permission to do it," she said.
