Best London bus tours

The Beatles evening tour

1.  The Beatles evening tour

Trace the years from 1962 to 1970, when Beatlemania was at its peak, as you visit more than 35 Beatles-related landmarks on this evening tour of central London. You’ll also see some of the sites surrounding the band members’ individual music careers, while your expert local guide entertains you with Beatles history through music and film footage - don't worry, there are plenty of photo stops.

Ghost bus tour

2.  Ghost bus tour

Set aside an hour of your time to get well and truly spooked. On this ghost bus tour you’ll cruise the city’s historic streets in an old Routemaster (painted black, of course), learning all about London’s gruesome past with a hefty helping on chilling tales and the most haunted sites in the capital.

We may all be muggles, but London contains a wealth of fun Harry Potter experiences that are more than magical. Hop onboard this tour and you’ll journey from Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross to Number 12 Grimmauld Place – a trip that takes three hours (aka just enough time to get  really  into the Potterverse). You’ll get to learn about locations that inspired JK Rowling’s awesome books and discover the tales behind some of wizarding wonders. And the best thing? You’ll also be shown some of the most famous Harry Potter film locations.

Time Out tip: Once you head back to Kings Cross, you grab a slice and enjoy the sun (providing there is any) at Happy Face Pizza. It's Neapolitan style, so you know it's good.

James Bond bus tour

5.  James Bond bus tour

Sure, James Bond drives fancy cars, like a classic Aston Martin, but can he fit all his mates in there for a jolly around London? Not likely. Especially if you want to throw a guide in for good measure, too. Luckily, you can fit all those people and more on this Bond bus tour. Delve into 007’s world of espionage and late-night wanderings to discover filming locations as well as sites frequented by Ian Fleming.

Time Out tip: Want even more British novelty? Just a 14-minute tube stop away you'll find Rules, London's oldest restaurant serving traditional British fare. It's pretty fancy, so Bond would approve.

Naturally, you’ll be travelling on-board a classic double-decker, and it’s the perfect way get views of famous attractions, including Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and the London Eye after hours. 7.  Open-top tour on a vintage bus

A vintage double-decker bus has been transformed into an open-top sightseeing experience. From Buckingham Palace to the Tower of London via the Houses of Parliament, The Shard and St Paul’s Cathedral, see London without any of those annoying panes of glass in the way. Aboard the bus, you'll also have screens with historical footage of London through the decades.

Time Out tip: If you're feeling peckish after the tour, head to the vibrant, colourful Carnaby Street (a 15-minute stroll) for lots of great food options.

Bustronome London

8.  Bustronome London

A bus tour for gourmands. The Bustronome team combine fine views with fine dining, across a series of lunch, afternoon tea and dinner services. As you pass a sequence of landmarks including Nelson’s Column, the Houses of Parliament, St Paul’s and the Tower of London, you’ll also enjoy a seasonal menu with an optional paired wine. Bon appetit!

Time Out tip: While this tour is on the pricier end of the scale, it makes a great gift. Not to mention you get to site-see while you dine.

Afternoon Tea Bus London Tour

9.  Afternoon Tea Bus London Tour

Fancy a quintessentially British afternoon tea on a classic London bus? Get involved on one of Golden Tours' afternoon tea buses  – as you sit down to a brew and a spread of sandwiches, cakes and pastries, you’ll be driven past Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, St James’s Park, Hyde Park, the Royal Albert Hall and all the usual suspects. UK And Great Britain Coach / Bus Tour Reviews

Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
Far exceeded expectations. If you are looking for a leisurely trip - this is not it...but what it gives you is an amazing experience. I think I averaged about 14,000 steps, lots of early morning wake ups, but pure joy, fun and laughter. It was an amazing trip,
I really enjoyed the trip

Globus

"Had to call Globus three times before trip to get the final travel packet. Each time I called ,was told that someone would take care of this. Bus driver Glenn and tour guide Clive were great. Mic on bus kept cutting out and the people in the back of the bus could not hear. Would have like to have spent a day in Belfast and seen the Titanic museum ,All that Belfast was just a bathroom break and all I saw of Belfast was the washroom inside City Hall. If we had spent a day in Belfast I, wouldn't been so tried by the time we got to Scotland. Also would have like to have another in York. When we returned to London, somewhere from the time the bus arrived at the hotel till they unloaded the bags and put them on the luggage cart and bought them to the room, the porter broke my bag and the wheel came off. When I reported this to the hotel was told " these things happen", too bad, so sad " have your insurance company buy you a new bag". I had to try to get back home with a big with three wheel.

is there any bus from Paddington to Windsor castle and Windsor castle back to Paddington? thanks

There is a bus but it departs from Victoria and as you are staying near Paddington it would make more sense to take the train. Easy change at Slough - https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

london uk bus tours

St George’s Chapel is open on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday but it is not part of the visit on Sunday, when it is only open for worship so you won't be able to wander around.

We took the train from Paddington to Windsor a couple of weeks ago. There’s an easy change at Slough…. Slough is a small station and it’s well marked and Windsor Central station is very near the castle. NB there's also no Changing the Guard on Sundays in Windsor either.

I understand St George’s Chapel is not accessible during Sunday. i want to see jewelry and art gallery of Windsor Castle not chapel. The bus from Victoria is at Sunday afternoon. so probably return at Victoria at evening

See the timetable at https://www.reading-buses.co.uk/services/RBUS/702?date=2024-06-02&direction=inbound

The train from Paddington station to Windsor & Eton Central station with the easy change of train at Slough station will take as little as 30-40 minutes. The off peak day return fare by train is £14.20 per adult, you can buy tickets on the day at the station so no need to book.

Contactless is accepted on this route and is £7.10 each way in off peak times, Sunday is off peak all day.

Tripadvisor staff removed this post because it did not meet Tripadvisor's forum posting guidelines with prohibiting self-promotional advertising or solicitation.

#6 fails to mention…..

The train from Paddington requires a change of trains at Slough but it is still quicker than the train from Waterloo to Riverside station - which would not require you to change trains

You would need to walk very slowly to cover Windsor and Eton Central to the castle is anything more than about 7 minutes…….

Tripadvisor staff has removed this post because it did not meet Tripadvisor's forum guidelines with regards to off-topic chat.

Take note that if you are visiting Sunday afternoon, the last admission time is 4pm with the castle closing at 5:15.

OP you mentioned wanting to see jewelry.

To see the Royal Art Gallery, visit the Kings Gallery in London .

A word cloud from pollsters More In Common, found that a lot of people think the general election campaign is "boring".

Ali asks our panel if they agree that it is the case (with a disclaimer that both are on a politics show on a Sunday night).

James Starkie, the former Home Office adviser, says he thinks it's partly to do with the parties' leaders.

He says that, even though Jeremy Corbyn wasn't charismatic, he was compelling.

And no-one would describe Boris Johnson as boring, Mr Starkie says.

But there is a fatigue in politics at the moment. Mr Starkie reckons a lot of people will only tune in for the last week or so of the election.

The New Statesman's Freddie Hayward says Rishi Sunak needs to avoid the mistakes he made with Liz Truss during public debates - where he came across as rude by interrupting.

He also spoke too quickly, Mr Hayward says.

Both leaders, he reckons, will be working with their teams ahead of the debates to make sure they're best prepared.

And with that, Ali ends the Politics Hub show.

Join us again tomorrow, when Sophy Ridge will be back at the helm.

By Tamara Cohen , political correspondent

As AI deepfakes cause havoc during other elections, experts warn the UK's politicians should be prepared.

"Just tell me what you had for breakfast", says Mike Narouei, of ControlAI, recording on his laptop. I speak for around 15 seconds, about my toast, coffee and journey to their offices.

Within seconds, I hear my own voice, saying something entirely different.

In this case, words I have written: "Deepfakes can be extremely realistic and have the ability to disrupt our politics and damage our trust in the democratic process."

We have used free software, it hasn't taken any advanced technical skills, and the whole thing has taken next to no time at all.

This is an audio deepfake - video ones take more effort to produce - and as well as being deployed by scammers of all kinds, there is deep concern, in a year with some two billion people going to the polls, in the US, India and dozens of other countries including the UK, about their impact on elections.

You can read more from Sky News below:

Our panel is now discussing the NHS.

James Starkie says that shadow health secretary Wes Streeting's pledge to reform the NHS has struck a chord with the public.

He says that it does need to be digitised drastically, among other things, and Mr Streeting has spoken about that.

But the devil is in the details, Mr Starkie says, and also the funding - which Labour has not set out its plans for.

Freddie Hayward, a political correspondent at the New Statesman, says it remains to be seen if Labour has the political capital to reform the NHS if they come into power.

He says the situation is tricky due to the party's inheritance - and there will be a swathe of issues if they come into power.

Maria Caulfield, the health minister, is now speaking to Ali about the NHS.

Ali asks about the NHS waiting lists - noting they doubled between 2010 and the pandemic.

Ms Caulfield says that "it's not how many people are on the waiting list that is the important factor".

She adds: "Because as we develop new treatments as we open up new services, as people get conditions that can be treated, waiting lists of course will grow".

What does matter, she says, is "how long" people wait.

People have gone from waiting two years this time last year, to an average of 16 to 18 weeks, Ms Caulfield claims.

Building new surgeries

Ms Caulfield is then asked about her party's pledge today to build 100 new GP surgeries and modernise another 150.

Ali points out that Boris Johnson pledged 40 new hospitals in 2019 - and it is predicted these will not be done by the 2030 deadline.

Ms Caulfield dismisses the concerns of the National Audit Office - and says the target remains 2030.

Back to our panel, and they are discussing migration.

James Starkie, the former Home Office adviser, says Labour adopting the OBR's forecast for net migration to fall to 315,000 by 2028 is important.

He says targets are "hostage to fortune" - as the Tories have found out.

But committing to the OBR's figures impacts how a government can forecast their tax income - and this was shown when Liz Truss had to accept large levels of immigration to fund her tax cuts.

Freddie Hayward says that cutting immigration will cost money - taking the example of employing UK people in the care sector costs more as wages are higher.

And that has to be funded from council budgets, who will look to central government for help.

Shadow schools minister Catherine McKinnell is asked by Ali about reports that private schools are blaming Labour's proposed VAT rise on the institutions for closing.

She says it is "right" for private schools to pay VAT - adding that there have been a number of above-inflation rises to school fees in recent years and student numbers have not fallen.

The shadow minister says the money raised from the tax rise will be spent on state schools, where "nine out of ten" children get their education.

She adds that thinktanks have factored behavioural changes into their forecasts of schools fees being taxed - and a net benefit was predicted.

On tonight's Politics Hub with Ali Fortescue , Labour's shadow schools minister Catherine McKinnell was asked about the party's immigration policy.

It comes after Labour made a pledge to reduce net migration ( read more here ).

Ms McKinnell was asked if her party would stick by the forecasts based on current policy produced by the Office of Budgetary Responsibility (OBR), which stated net migration would fall from 685,000 at the end of last year to 315,000 by the 2027/2028 period.

The Labour candidate first said the party respects the OBR, and that she did not know what the projected figure was.

When Ali told her what the target was, she was unclear if Labour would accept the figure as part of its plans should it take power.

Ms McKinnell then said that "if that's what the OBR is predicting, then that's what we will work within".

Asked if this was then Labour's target to reduce migration, Ms McKinnell says Labour does not have a target for reducing migration.

She adds that immigration can be a benefit to the economy, but UK also needs to grow its on workforce.

Ali turns to your panel to discuss the Diane Abbott row - and the veteran Labour politician standing again for the party ( read more here ).

Freddie Hayward, a political correspondent at the New Statesman, says what happens this week will decide whether a line has been drawn under the squabble.

He says that, if Ms Abbott comes out in the media it could inflame the situation again.

But if she backs the leadership, then it will maybe see things move on.

James Starkie, a former Home Office adviser, points out that Labour has made a series of decisions which have been questionable.

This includes what happened to Ms Abbott, as well as things like the row back on a £28bn climate pledge.

He says if Labour wants to be in government, it needs to get on top of such events.

Good evening. Welcome to the first Sunday Politics Hub – in case you missed it, we are now going seven days a week - so I will be with you on the weekends from here on in.

And well, today the parties are focusing on two things that always come right at the top of the list of what the public care about.

Healthcare and immigration.

But not necessarily the way round you'd expect, though.

It's Labour pledging to be tough on net migration.

And the Conservatives promising more GP appointments.

Not their traditional turf.

Waiting lists have reached record highs under the Tories.

And for labour - will too tough a message on immigration turn off some voters? The SNP certainly thought so today.

Or is this an election where we're seeing traditional party lines, and potentially the political map, redrawn?

A lot might have happened this week – but look at the polls.

The Labour Party is still miles ahead, holding onto a 20 point lead.

The first TV debate is this week - could a breakout moment in a head-to-head debate shift the polls?

Bank holiday travel: How bad will it be on trains, planes and roads?

Exclusive: some intercity ‘rail’ passengers will need to connect from one rail-replacement bus to another, article bookmarked.

Over the busiest late May bank holiday weekend since 2019, some long-distance rail travellers will be obliged to make 150-mile journeys entirely by bus – even having to change coaches along the way.

Wide-ranging railway closures could persuade more people to travel by road, resulting in even greater congestion at key points on the motorway network as the post-pandemic travel surge continues.

The late May bank holiday also marks the start of a week’s half-term for most UK schools. Some airports will handle their highest number of passengers ever for a late May bank holiday, with Manchester expecting 100,000 travellers per day through the holidays .

The Port of Dover is expecting another busy bank holiday weekend and has told coach operators they must use a dedicated border processing facility for most of Friday and Saturday. Ferry travellers in Scotland will be affected by Caledonian MacBrayne ’s continuing shortage of vessels.

The Independent has researched the key pinch points for travellers on all major forms of transport.

Network Rail is closing some key intercity lines for planned engineering work over the long weekend. The organisation says: “People needing to travel between Saturday 25 May and Monday 27 May could have longer journeys, fewer available seats, and may need to use rail-replacement buses.”

Passengers attempting to travel on the West Coast main line, linking Glasgow with northwest England with London , will see trains replaced by buses for the northernmost 150 miles.

Network Rail says £24m is being invested “to enable smoother and more reliable journeys for passengers and freight services”.

A key part of the work is taking place at Shap in Cumbria. Network Rail says: “A specialised ‘drain train’ will refurbish over 2.5km [1.5 miles] of drainage to reduce flooding incidents on the West Coast main line.”

The journey between Glasgow Central and Oxenholme Lake District in Cumbria, normally a journey of around one hour 45 minutes on Avanti West Coast , will require a change of rail-replacement buses at Carlisle and is scheduled to take more than twice as long.

Further disruption will take place around Crewe and in the Milton Keynes area. Buses will replace trains between Shrewsbury and Crewe, affecting Transport for Wales passengers.

No services will run via Huddersfield on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 May, extending journey times over the Pennines between Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and York.

As is customary over any bank holiday, the main Greater Anglia line between Norwich, Ipswich and London will be blocked in Essex – specifically between Shenfield and Witham – with passengers obliged to take rail-replacement buses.

On Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 May, work on the new HS2 line in Wendover, Buckinghamshire wlll lead to the cancellation of trains between London Marylebone and Aylesbury.

The North Kent line between Gravesend and Rochester will be blocked. The following weekend, from 1 June, the key southeast London commuter line between Blackheath and Charlton will close for 10 weeks due to repairs to a 175-year-old tunnel.

The long and bitter dispute between the train drivers’ union, Aslef, and rail firms contracted by the government continues, but no industrial action is planned for the bank holiday or half term. It is thought unlikely that any strikes will be called during the election campaign.

Tens of thousands of football fans supporting the two big Manchester sides, City and United, will travel from northwest England to Wembley for the FA Cup final on Saturday. They will place particular pressure on key stretches of the M6, M40 and M1.

Elsewhere, severe congestion is predicted – with this year’s late May bank holiday set to be the busiest on the roads since beginning of the pandemic .

The AA expects the worst day to travel will be Friday 24 May. Transport analytics specialists Inrix advises motorists to delay their departures until 6pm to miss the worst of the queues when both commuter and leisure drivers are sharing the roads.

Read more: Warning over bank holiday traffic delays as busiest weekend since pandemic expected

The M25 clockwise between junction 7 for the M23 ( Gatwick and Brighton) and junction 21 (M1) is expected to bear the brunt of the traffic.

On Saturday, traffic is expected to peak between 3pm and 6pm. Inrix expects routes from cities to coasts to have some of the worst delays as drivers head to the seaside on what is expected to be the sunniest day of the weekend.

In the middle of the day, the M5 southwest to Devon is expected to be extremely busy between Bristol and Taunton. On Saturday afternoon, snarl-ups are anticipated on the M25 anticlockwise from the Heathrow area towards the M23.

Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at Inrix, advised drivers to “be prepared for long delays, especially in and around major cities and towards the coasts”.

“Travel as early or as late in the day as possible to avoid the worst delays,” he said.

Pressure on major airports is intense, with Manchester airport – the UK’s third busiest, after Heathrow and Gatwick – expecting an average of 100,000 passengers per day between Friday 24 May and Monday 2 June. The increase over the bank holiday will be 5 per cent up on a year earlier.

The airport is urging passengers to turn up at the earliest time the airline recommends.

London Stansted will handle slightly fewer passengers, with 375,000 anticipated between Friday and Monday. At East Midlands airport, Friday 24 May is set to be the busiest day of the period – with an average of 400 passengers per hour departing and a similar number returning.

Gatwick airport declined to reveal expected numbers. The Sussex airport’s top three destinations are Barcelona, Malaga and Faro, with the leading long-haul destinations being Dubai, New York and Orlando.

As work continues to install new security scanners, Birmingham airport is telling passengers: “Our upstairs queuing area has been taken out of action and customers queue downstairs. This is the new normal, as we construct our new security area.

“This transition is at times confusing for our customers with queuing and walking routes changing, however our colleagues are around for any help and assistance.”

A passenger named Patrick posted a picture of long queues outside the terminal at Birmingham airport. He wrote: “Line snaked through the entire interior of the airport. Started outside in this mess – got here 3.5 hours early – hoping for the best.”

The only pre-announced strikes during the half-term holiday are in Italy, with walk-outs planned for Tuesday 28 May by ground staff at the main Milan airports (Malpensa and Linate), Venice and Verona.

The post-Brexit hardening of the EU border at the Port of Dover is likely to bring long queues once again. French Police aux Frontières are obliged under the terms of the UK’s departure to check and stamp all passports.

Dover District Council said: “Operation Brock is in place to manage the flow of freight traffic to the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel. The M20 remains open for tourist and local traffic.

“Kent and Medway Resilience Forum is working to keep traffic moving, and to keep Dover town centre open for local traffic and businesses.”

Coach operators have been told to use a dedicated processing facility at the port’s Western Docks from 6am on Friday 24 May until 5.30pm on Saturday 25 May. Passengers undergo initial checks ahead of screening at the Police aux Frontières checkpoint. The port is telling coach firms: “Ensure all individuals on board have their personal passports open and ready before the border controls.”

Ferry travellers in Scotland will be affected by Caledonian MacBrayne’s continuing shortage of vessels. Four sailings between Oban and the island of Mull are cancelled on Friday as the ship will be redeployed to and from Islay.

A large Caledonian MacBrayne ship, Caledonian Isles , is out of service due to extensive annual maintenance. In March, Robbie Drummond, chief executive of CalMac, said: “We know the fact we are having to redeploy vessels has caused concern in communities across the whole network.

”Given our fleet was already stretched to the limit, it is inevitable the loss of one of our larger vessels during peak season will cause some disruption across the wider network.”
