Enjoy 20% off selected items: crystal quartz, citrine, Lapis Lazuli. Celebrate Libra Season The meaning of Libra Libra is an air sign represented by the scales (interestingly, the only inanimate object of the zodiac), an association that reflects Libra's fixation on balance and harmony. Libra is obsessed with symmetry and strives to create equilibrium in all areas of life. Enjoy symmetry and connection during Libra Season. Use the time to re-harmonize and re-balance your energetic field, keeping in mind all of the things that require your energy and calling back the things that aren't worth it, then using that energy to allocate to things that will serve your highest self.

We just got in these new backflow incense burners as cones! The smoke from these unique cones drifts downward a few inches before dissipating into the air. When used with these specially designed burners, it creates a waterfall of fragrant smoke. Cone sets are only $9, and the burners range from $13-50

We had a break in last night at 1:30 am. The idiot was wearing a reflective vest when he smashed through our front door, was only inside for a little over a minute, and tried unsuccessfully to break open our jewelry case before running away. He got nothing. If you know this moron, please let us know.

Clicquot's tray

Clicquot's tray

Kim's puppy, Clicquot (klee'KO), came in for a visit this morning and apparently our stone pricing trays are the perfect puppy toy! Between merrily greeting everyone who came into the shop, she snatched up a tray and then carried it all around the store, tossing it up in the air and pushing it along the carpet. She thought it was just the best thing ever. She's only 4 months old and she's getting so big! And don't worry; we sanitized the tray after she was done with it. :)

CNR Student Ambassadors Shine

Cnr student ambassadors welcome prospective students .

Among the many student groups housed by the College of Natural Resources (CNR) , student ambassadors make the college feel like home to incoming CNR students. They play a pivotal role in recruiting events and in preparing personalized mailing materials for each prospective student.

CNR student ambassadors attend recruitment and outreach events such as UIdaho Bound, in addition to career and job fairs.

Having the opportunity to show prospective students they can do what makes them happy at work and still make a living is so important. Abby Evans, sophomore ambassador

When they are not talking with students or families about U of I’s natural resources programs, they are working hard behind the scenes, preparing welcome packets and handwriting letters to accepted students.

Being an ambassador allows students to learn and practice transferable skills necessary for higher education or industry careers.

A man stands behind a table covered with University of Idaho CNR swag and pamphlets.

Current ambassador John Maes, a senior studying Forestry  and Fire Ecology and Management , reflects on the tight-knit community the ambassadors have established, which includes sharing tasks and representing CNR.

“When things need to be done, everyone takes responsibility to come together and get things done,” he said.

Zoie Harvey, a third-year student ambassador studying Environmental Science , with an emphasis in Policy Planning and Management, also stressed the importance of working as a team.

“Relying on a team, we have multiple people with different strengths, especially with their different majors and areas of knowledge,” she said.

The student ambassadors also work with various employees, encouraging collaboration and creating opportunities for students to flourish with mentorship.

The communication and leadership skills the ambassadors learn throughout their experience is pivotal in preparing them for careers

Bella Canifax-Broesch, a junior studying Ecology and Conservation Biology  and a minor in Wildlife Resources, shared her passion for animal conservation outreach and education, particularly in zoos. She said the communication skills she has learned as an ambassador will allow her to convey the importance of conserving species.

Much of the communication ambassadors do involves communicating to diverse audiences. Based on their experiences, ambassadors find personal ways to connect with prospective students and their families.

Abby Evans, a sophomore studying Conservation Biology, said sharing personal experiences as CNR students helps attract new students to the college.

“I was questioning what I wanted to do in college and what I might be happy in,” she said. “Having the opportunity to show prospective students they can do what makes them happy at work and still make a living is so important.”

A line of students stands in a building.

Student ambassadors also extend their influence beyond the borders of U of I’s Moscow campus. They have participated in outreach and recruitment events in Sacramento, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada, in addition to other events across Idaho.

Working as an ambassador has also taught the students about the value of getting involved.

“I learned it’s important to put myself out there and seize the opportunities that are in front of me to explore new boundaries,” said Gabriel Donahue, a junior studying Integrated Environmental Sciences.

In addition to being able to pass down the knowledge they have absorbed while at CNR, ambassadors are ultimately thankful for the opportunity to give back to the college. Many of them received handwritten letters from past student ambassadors when they were accepted into U of I. Writing these letters to the next generation of CNR students is a full circle moment for them.

“I get to give back and pass on the spirit of the Vandal family,” Gabriel said.

Having tried the Sound Bath at Resonance Ventura with a group of friends last month, I was curious and eager to try Pamela's other healing modality which was new to me, the immersive sensory experience called Sensorium. Without waxing poetic, let me just say "You have to try this!" I'd never done anything quite like it. My session lasted just half an hour, but I was transfixed and transported through modulating vibration, sound, and visual stimulation. The best I can tell, one's monkey mind and forever-chatter abate and the present moment is expanded, the results of which induce the body and the mind to experience deep relaxation and rejuvenation. I will do this again.

It was such a pleasure to welcome you all and provide a resonating Sound Bath for you and your wonderful group. It was a delightful session that I too enjoyed because of you! You all are welcome back anytime. Please know that we offer a returning guest discount so I hope to treat you when you come back, of course as often as you like! Thank you so much too for taking your time to create and post a review... It means so much to me the care and attention you have given to help Resonance Ventura and certainly me!

Last month, I went with a group of friends to experience a sound bath at Resonance Ventura. We weren't sure what to expect as some of us had never been to a sound bath before. We had such a great time! We were all impressed with the beautiful place and setting in the Ventura Harbor, with yachts clanging and seals barking. The fresh air and convenient free parking set the stage for what was to come. Pamela, the owner of Resonance Ventura, met us at the door and welcomed us in to the large, luminous studio. There were mats and pillows, and we laid out and relaxed a few minutes before she began the session with her Crystal Bowls, intoning them sequentially, with descriptions of their healing properties. Then she played. We got lost in the sound. Various combinations of tones would resonate and overlap, and we were taken on a mesmerizing journey. As she wound down the session, we were encouraged to feel back into our bodies, and allowed to take time to rouse at our own pace. It was a super relaxing and energizing at the same time! I would definitely recommend a sound bath by Pamela and Resonance Ventura, a unique experience awaits!

About 3 weeks ago I got an opportunity to experience the Sensorium, it was something like I never experienced before. For me it was a complete deep relaxing, kind of out of body feeling. I just laid down and listened to the sound waves and felt the vibration move through my entire body. I can't remember the last time I felt so Zen or chill in a long time. My body felt great and full of energy. I'm a private chef and cater allot and for me this is just what I needed, I'm looking forward to my next session. And the vibe of her center makes you feel very comfortable too. Thank you

Esau’s Cafe is home to Carpinteria’s first permanent outdoor parklet

journey home ventura

CARPINTERIA, Calif. - If you enjoy eating outdoors, year-round, add Carpinteria to your list.

The city installed its first permanent parklet Wednesday in front of Esau's Cafe on Linden Avenue.

The clipped-together system is made of hard steel.

It an 854 mile journey to get to the south coast as the city-owned parklet was manufactured by Modstreet in Durango, Colorado.

"This is safe," said Matt Kibel with Modstreet. "It's made out of carbon steel so it's a whole carbon steel structure frame and it's crash-rated up to 25 miles an hour, 30 miles an hour crash rating."

The newly installed parklet outside the local, popular restaurant is actually two six foot by 12 foot systems, built as one.

"It gives people a chance to be outside in nice weather and gives us a lot more seating and make it all around a better cafe-style restaurant," said Scott Stanley, President of Esau's Cafe. "I'm very fortunate to be the first one doing it."

Bicyclists are also expected to be pleased with the new design as it brings back bike lanes; no more encroachment, a common complaint linked to the older styles.

Stanley is renting his parklet from the city. Other business owners in town have the option of either buying a parklet outright from Modstreet or, lease one from the city on a monthly basis for roughly $55.

The City of Carpinteria established a hard deadline of June 30 for business owners to remove older, pandemic-era parklets.

Ryan Gellert and Archana Ram of Patagonia.

It’s a delicate balancing act — how to encourage customers not to buy things they don’t need and still run a healthy, profitable business. But over the past 51 years, Patagonia has managed to find a way.

Ever since Yvon Chouinard created the outdoors brand in 1973, a big part of its ethos has been to build a business that is functional, successful and also sustainable.

He said the brand encourages shoppers to ask themselves several important questions: “What are you going to use it for? Can it replace something that you already have? If it does, what are you going to do with that something? And then how do you keep this product in use as long as possible and make sure that if you’re not using it, it gets to somebody who will.”

Those are the reasons Patagonia has embraced product resale, which it calls Worn Wear , and recycling, where it takes back pieces at the end of their life, Gellert said.

He stressed that “figuring out how to make product with a lower footprint, while critical, doesn’t do enough to negate just making too much product.”

Patagonia has long campaigned against overconsumption and Gellert said that will never change despite the world’s focus on businesses making more and more money. “I don’t think that there’s anything anti-capitalist about making high-quality product and encouraging people not to buy things that they don’t need. I certainly recognize it changes the model from the current one, which is a bit of a race to the bottom on how much can we sell, but I don’t think the growth in consumer goods that we’re navigating as a species is sustainable. This has to change.”

He said Patagonia customers “think deeply about these issues and in addition to making purchasing decisions that reflect their values, they generally are more active in protecting our home planet and engaging in civil society in a variety of ways.”

But as the CEO of a company, Gellert acknowledged that he wrestles with the question of where “profit sits next to purpose.” Over the past half-century, Patagonia has managed to “ride that knife edge,” he said, and never lose sight of its mission statement, which is: ‘We’re in business to save our home planet.’”

Gellert said it didn’t take Chouinard long to realize that the products he was making for himself and other climbers who enjoyed the pristine outdoors would ultimately negatively impact the environment he loved so much. So he did an about-face to “clean climbing,” a philosophy that still drives Patagonia today.

Gellert said as a result of the company’s history, size and scale, Patagonia can now participate in discussions about how a consumer goods company can encourage people to think differently about consumption while also tackling the role business needs to play in the face of “the climate and ecological crisis” the world is facing.

He admitted that the hardest part is getting other business leaders to participate while “the most fertile ground is talking to customers, to students, to employees of other businesses, and bringing creative storytelling.”

He pointed to Patagonia’s newly released film, titled “Shitthropocene,” which addressed the dilemma facing the fashion community — an industry that accounts for up to 10 percent of carbon emissions and whose products overflow landfills around the world. He said the film not only educates people but also provides alternatives and “ways that people can engage in activism.”

Studies show that by 2030, the apparel industry could actually account for 50 percent of carbon emissions, but there is still time to address the problem if businesses step up and take responsibility.

“I don’t think that there is a place in our future for any model described as fast fashion, the notion of triggering people to buy things they don’t need, making things of low quality and then building an infrastructure that allows you to just toss things away,” he said. “That whole model is flawed. We’ve got to create an environment where that’s no longer acceptable.”

Gellert concluded his remarks with a piece of advice for other apparel industry brands: “You need to understand what your values are and commit deeply and permanently to making decisions across the breadth of your business — including in your supply chain — in relationship to all the impacted stakeholders: employees, customers, those that make your product and beyond. I think it’s understanding your footprint, being very consistent and addressing every challenge that you can. And understanding that it’s a journey really without an end.”
