World Travel Market London 2023: A three-day dive into the future of global travel

WTM-2022

World Travel Market London 2023 unveils its conference lineup at ExCeL London from 6-8 November. The event features three stages—Discover, Elevate, Innovate—and focuses on diverse travel industry topics.

World Travel Market London 2023 , has announced details of its conference programme, with high-profile speakers and seminars.

More than 60 conference sessions are lined up, empowering the global travel community, and reminding them they have the Power to Change travel.

The conference programme will include eight new tracks across three stages over three days, taking place at ExCeL London, from 6-8 November 2023. In a move away from previous years, the 2023 conference stages will be named Discover, Elevate and Innovate – a reflection of their goal.

Furthermore, in response to the demand in 2022 – which saw 9,102 visitors attend the WTM London Conference sessions – stage sizes have been increased, and rather than one main stage, WTM will host three equally important stages across the event.

The eight conference tracks will be titled Sustainability, Technology, Geo-Economics, Emerging Markets, Consumer Trends, Marketing, Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) and Experience and aim to help the global travel community succeed and thrive, by informing, entertaining, and influencing their business decisions.

In another first, the Discover Stage will feature a new layout designed to support networking. Table-based seating, rather than traditional conference-style chairs, will promote networking between sessions, which will also include icebreakers, storytellers, and socialising during breaks.

Some of the key sessions taking place, listed by day, are:

Monday 6th November

  • The Ministers’ Summit at World Travel Market in association with UNWTO and WTTC: In its 17th year, this important event in the WTM London calendar brings together the largest gathering of dignitaries from around the world to discuss and ratify key tourism agreements. The Summit will take place on Day One of WTM London 2023. This is a change from previous years, when it has taken place on Day Two and signifies the increasing importance of the Summit to the worldwide travel and tourism industry.
  • Also on Monday 6th November, attendees can look forward to the release of WTM’s new research WTM Presents…A Global Travel Outlook. Delegates will gain valuable insights into the trends shaping the future of travel with a presentation of the new WTM Global Travel Report, supported by renowned researchers at Oxford Economics.

This session will give a voice to the changing needs of travellers, emerging and growing destinations, and uncover behaviours and trends for 2024 and beyond.

Tuesday 7th November

  • Diversity & Inclusion Summit (D&I): This important Summit launch will tackle why a travel business can perform better with diverse workforces, and the importance of inclusivity in the development of leisure travel strategy. Fostering sense of belonging with consideration for under-represented groups will ensure that travel is accessible to all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background. Amongst the sessions, Darren Edwards , a record-breaking disabled adventurer, will examine the stigma surrounding disability and will explore ways in which businesses can overcome subconscious biases.
  • Technology Summit: The Technology Summit will cover sessions such as Building Cities for Smart Tourism; the Future of Technology; and AI – Boundless Opportunities for Change in the Travel Sector.
  • Also, on Tuesday 7th November, on the Innovate Stage, the travel community will hear from Tom Hall, Vice President at Lonely Planet, who will review how changes in traveller behaviour and priorities have shifted the landscape of travel.

Wednesday 8th November

  • Marketing Summit: Marketing sessions will cover data-driven; storytelling and engaging with influencers. Wednesday’s sessions will also cover the future of marketing and digital tools in travel marketing.
  • Sustainability Summit: Sustainability is still facing many barriers in the travel industry and the summit discovers how education, socio-economic benefits and effective funding can drive positive change and encourage the adoption of sustainable practices throughout the sector.

Among sessions: Where Next? Reimagining tourism in a constantly changing climate discovers what good tourism looks like as climate and biodiversity challenges worsen.

In addition, WTM London 2023 will be rounded off on Wednesday 8th November by a keynote speaker, whose identity will be revealed soon.

Brooke Gilbertson , International Conference Manager of WTM London, said:

“ We couldn’t be more pleased with the great line-up of speakers and panellists headlining at this year’s event. For those seeking a macro view of the travel industry and a deeper understanding of the forces shaping it, WTM London 2023 is a must-attend show with speakers coming from every corner of the world to spread their wisdom on every element of the travel industry.”

london travel mart

Staged annually in London, World Travel Market London - the leading global event for the travel industry - is a vibrant must attend business-to-business event presenting a diverse range of destinations and industry sectors to UK and International travel professionals. It provides a unique opportunity for the whole global travel trade to meet, network, negotiate and conduct business. Who attends? More than 50,000 senior travel industry professionals, government ministers and international press, visit ExCeL - London every November to network, negotiate and discover the latest industry opinion and trends at WTM London. The event generates more than £2.5 billion of travel industry contracts. For many years, WTM London has organised World Responsible Tourism Day , with the support of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, This is the world's largest industry event focused on efforts to make the industry more responsible and sustainable. Each year leading figures from the industry, along with representatives of civil society and key organisations, gather to discuss the key issues facing the sustainable development of tourism. Many of these issues are directly reflected in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Tourism is also mentioned specifically in three of the SDGs: SDG 8 - Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all - states that "By 2030, devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products." SDG 12 - Ensure sustainable Consumption and Production patterns - calls for the world to "Develop and implement tools to monitor sustainable development impacts for sustainable tourism which creates jobs, promotes local culture and products."; SDG 14 - Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development - says there is an essential role for tourism, to "by 2030 increase the economic benefits of SIDS and LCDs from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism". In addition to these goals, tourism is able to support every other SDG - from action on climate change to improving gender equality and protecting biodiversity – and in 2017, marking the UN International Year for Sustainable Tourism for Development, World Travel Market's responsible tourism programme featured panel sessions dedicated to examining what the industry can do to meet its commitments across a range of the goals. The World Travel Market Portfolio includes responsible tourism seminars at WTM London, Arabian Travel Market, WTM Latin America and WTM Africa. These seminars are part of the Events Programme for each show. WTM London forms part of the Reed Travel Exhibitions WTM Portfolio along with: · World Travel Market Latin America · World Travel Market Africa · Arabian Travel Market · International French Travel Market · World Travel Market Connect Asia · International Golf Travel Market.

UK AND LONDON TRAVEL PLANNING 1 1

9 of the best London markets

Borough market.

Borough Market is one of the best London markets to visit in the city.

  • What to buy: High quality, sustainable food
  • Where: 8 Southwark St, London SE1 1TL (Closest tube: London Bridge)
  • When: Mon-Fri 10:00-17:00; Sat 08:00 – 17:00; Sun 10:00 – 15:00

Operating since 1756, Borough Market has been feeding hungry Londoners for centuries and is today the most famous food market in London. It often features in movies or on TV, and is packed with stalls and places to eat.

The market is easy to get to and is open daily, and is a favourite foodie destination for its restaurants as well as the food stalls you can buy picnic fare from. This is our recommended list of the top places to eat at Borough Market – or simply following your nose and see where it takes you isn’t a bad plan at all!

Tip – The best days to visit the market are Wednesdays to Saturdays when all the traders are open. On Mondays and Tuesdays not all the stalls are open.

  • Maria’s Market Cafe

This is the place for no-nonsense British favourites like a full English breakfast, bubble and squeak or a chunky burger.

  • BAO Borough

Expect Asian fusion style food at BAO, including Taiwanese specialities like steamed buns and fried chicken.

  • Kappacasein Dairy

For raclette or a legendary cheese toastie, Kappacasein serves up the very best, made using only the finest ingredients.

  • Elliott’s

Elliott’s serves up good quality grilled platters made from seasonal ingredients, washed down with natural wines.

  • Hawksmoor

The Borough branch serves sublime seafood, succulent steaks and cocktails within a restored warehouse on the edge of the market.

  • Richard Haward Oysters

Sample cut-price oysters fresh from the sea here served with a splash of tabasco or lemon.

Arabica specialities in dishes from the Middle East, and is recommended for drinks as well as top-notch food.

Covent Garden Markets

Covent Garden Market in London.

  • What to buy: General goods, arts & crafts, antiques, clothing & accessories
  • Where: 14 James Street, London WC2E 8BU (Closest tube: Covent Garden)
  • When: See below for each market

Covent Garden is actually home to several good markets in London, although they’re all clustered together in the original market building. Each is known for a specific range of goods and has its own opening times, as follows.

  • Apple Market

When: Mon-Sat 10:00-18:00; Sun 12:00-18:00

The Apple Market is so-called because it used to be a fruit and veg market. Now it specialises in items like crafts, artwork, handmade jewellery and gloriously scented soaps. If you visit on a Monday you may also find antiques.

  • East Colonnade Market

East Colonnade Market is also open each day and can be one of the best clothes markets in London if you want to find hand-knitted garments for children. The market also offers homeware, handbags, jewellery, artwork, sweets and more.

  • Jubilee Market

When: Mon 05:00-17:00 (antiques) ; Tue-Fri 10:30-19:00 (general); Sat-Sun 10:00-18:00 (arts & crafts)

Jubilee Market changes according to the day of the week. On Mondays, it’s one of the best antique markets in London, while from Tuesday to Friday it sells all sorts of general goods. At weekends it transforms into one of the top markets in London for finding unique handmade works of art, homewares and gift items.

Columbia Road Flower Market in London.

What to buy: Flowers & plants

Where: Columbia Rd, London E2 7RG (Closest tube: Old Street)

When: Sun 08:00-14:00

Columbia Road is one for early birds, beginning at 8am and closing at 2pm. It’s famous as the best flower market in London and is held only on Sundays.

This is one of the best Sunday markets in London if you want to see something different, as the street lined with flowers for sale creates some colourful photo opportunities. A pleasing spectacle if you’re heading east on a Sunday.

Curries at Brick Lane Market London.

  • What to buy: Street food, new & vintage fashion, unique items
  • Where: Brick Ln, London E1 6QR (Closest tube: Aldgate East)
  • When: Sat 11:00-18:00; Sun 10:00-17:00

Brick Lane Market is open only at weekends, but on Saturday or Sunday it’s packed with stalls selling old and new fashion items, one-off finds and street food. Some real hidden gems can be uncovered here, and some people prefer it to Camden (or vice versa).

This vibrant, multicultural part of East London is also a good place for fans of street art to explore, and is also famous for all the Asian restaurants found in the area.

For some, a visit to London isn’t complete without having a curry on Brick Lane. This is also one of the top London street food markets, so the area is a firm favourite with foodies.

Sign for Camden Market.

  • What to buy: New & vintage fashion, handmade goods, unique items
  • Where: 54-56 Camden Lock Pl, London NW1 8AF (Closest tubes: Camden Town or Chalk Farm Road)
  • When: Mon-Sun 10:00-18:00

Camden is one of the most popular markets in London and is also open every day. Located by the canal, it’s a pleasant place to stroll around, especially on a sunny day.

The area has an alternative vibe and the market stalls at one of the most famous markets in London reflect this, peddling wares that include lots of handmade gifts and trinkets plus vintage clothing and accessories.

There’s a whole lot more besides, including music memorabilia, antiques and an eclectic range of homeware: the only fail-safe way to find out what this market is selling at any given time is to see it for yourself!

Sign for Portobello Market in London.

  • What to buy: Antiques, fashion, fruit & veg, hot food, new & preloved goods
  • Where: Portobello Rd, London W10 5TY (Closest tubes: Ladbroke Grove or Notting Hill Gate)
  • When: Mon-Wed 09:00-18:00; Thu 09:00-13:00; Fri (antiques) & Sat 09:00-19:00 (main day)

Portobello Road Market is the biggest antiques market in the world and stalls spill out into neighbouring streets as well as lining the famous road itself. You can also buy street food, fresh produce, clothing and accessories and a large range of brand new and second-hand goods there.

This is one of the best vintage markets in London, and Saturday is the ideal day to visit if you want to shop for antiques or fashion. Friday is also busy, and a good day to buy bric-a-brac, collectables, vintage clothing or antiques.

On Sundays, Portobello Green is the place to pick up preloved clothing and curios, while between Monday and Wednesday it’s best for household goods and food, though there are a few new and old clothing stalls. Thursday is similar, but the market shuts up shop at 1 pm.

Sign for Greenwich Market in London.

  • What to buy: Arts & crafts, fashion, jewellery, antiques & street food

Rolls-Royce has cemented its status as a darling of the London Stock Exchange after its value passed £40bn for the first time ever.

Spearheaded by its  relatively new CEO , Tufan Erginbilgiç, Rolls-Royce’s shares passed the valuation milestone after rising to more than 485p each.

Erginbilgic took up his role with the business at the start of 2023 when the share price was 93p and has overseen its remarkable rise.

In May , Rolls-Royce  reaffirmed its full-year guidance for profit and cash flow  as booming travel demand saw flying hours for its engines return to pre-pandemic levels.

In a trading update, Rolls-Royce said large engine flying hours had hit 100 per cent of 2019 levels in the four months to 30 April, driven by recovery in international travel to Asia and its growing fleet.

At the time, Deutsche Bank analysts said they believed the “evolution of large engine flying hours will be key” to assessing the company’s performance as the turnaround under its chief executive, Tufan Erginbilgic, continues.

The company’s half-year results are expected to be revealed on August 1.

London’s Tooting Market now accepts Bitcoin payments

Bitcoin payments are now accepted at the Tooting Market in South London, marking a huge milestone in the adoption of Bitcoin in the UK. Several merchants at the market started accepting Bitcoin transactions at the iconic indoor marketplace.

Also read: London’s Mayoral Candidate Proposes ‘LONDON Token’ for Citywide Crypto Integration

Merchants at the market started accepting Bitcoin transactions on June 18. The eight merchants including bars, restaurants, and a vinyl record store started accepting crypto payments with support from Bridge 2 Bitcoin.

Enthusiasts integrate Bitcoin into Tooting Market

Led by Hashley Giles , a bitcoin enthusiast successfully integrated bitcoin transactions into the almost century-old market, with support from Bridge 2 Bitcoin. Bitcoin community members and organizations including CommerceBlock , Mercury Layer, CoinShares, Civkit, Bitcoin core developers, Pleb Underground, and Lightning Network developers participated in the event.

With this latest development, Tooting Market could easily transform into a Bitcoin adoption hub for the UK, just like El Zonte in El Salvador.

It has also been described as a perfect example of how local communities accelerate the adoption and acceptance of new technologies like Bitcoin, setting a precedent for other markets.

The move could drive broader adoption of Bitcoin across the country

Nicholas Gregory, lead at Mercury Layer & Civkit highlighted the potential this development has on the adoption of Bitcoin in the country and region as merchants at the market have already started accepting Bitcoin payments.

“Local initiatives like this are good for Bitcoin,” explained Gregory. He added that:

“The more traders accept Bitcoin, the more we can push the state to recognize it as a legitimate form of payment, making it easier to use from a tax efficiency perspective.”

Tooting Market was established in 1930, becoming UK’s first food market. The market has received several awards such as the Best Small Indoor Market in 2017 at the Great British Market Awards.

Also read: Scale AI Chooses London for First International Expansion

It has also been featured in Lonely Planet’s “Favorite Lesser-Known Neighborhoods in the World’s Greatest Cities.”

The latest  initiative could signal a significant milestone in the UK’s bitcoin adoption as local traders appreciate the simplicity “and permissionless nature of Lightning payments as a solution to banking challenges faced by cash-based businesses.”

Wtm london announces exciting new areas on the exhibition floor.

WTM Team

In Press Releases , WTM London .

WTM London Announces Exciting New Areas on the Exhibition Floor

World Travel Market London 2023 , the world’s most influential travel & tourism event, will have three exciting new areas on the exhibition floor this year – Accommodation & Wholesalers, Experiences and Transportation.

The new areas will replace the International Hub and predominantly showcase private-sector and non-destination exhibitors.

The Accommodation & Wholesalers, Experiences and Transportation areas have been launched following extensive research carried out by World Travel Market earlier this year, which identified a trend towards travel purchasing decisions based upon experiences, as opposed to purely destination, particularly among younger generations.

WTM’s behavioural research highlighted the changing habits of the traveller, with Millennials and Gen Z increasingly making travel choices based on experience or bucket lists, as opposed to just the city, country, or region they want to visit.

Juliette Losardo , Exhibition Director at World Travel Market London, said:

“While Gen X might go to Spain, New York or Paris, the newer generations want to visit a wellness retreat, go white-water rafting, or learn to cook in a local community.

“This year we’ve seen an increase in the number of non-destination exhibitors signing up to WTM London, in response to the shift in requirements of younger travellers, who make travel choices based on what they want to do and experience.

“The new Accommodation & Wholesalers, Transportation & Experience areas of the show tap into this cultural shift, offering a place where buyers can come and see what is new and exciting on offer, all in one place.”

In the Accommodation & Wholesalers area, visitors will find dozens of suppliers, including:

Hilton Hotels & Resorts, a global brand of full-service hotels and resorts and the flagship brand of American multinational hospitality company Hilton; Intrepid Travel Group UK , one of the world’s best-known small-group tour organisers, with over 30 years’ experience of providing adventures across the globe; European Tour Operators Association , the trade association for global and European tour operators and suppliers in European destinations; and Miki Travel , which is one of the largest and most experienced wholesale tour operators in Europe.

Visitors to the Experiences area can find exhibitors such as:

Go City (previously known as Leisure Pass Group) – the world’s largest sightseeing pass business, operating in more than 30 destinations, including London, New York, Sydney and Oahu – and Montparnasse 56 , operator of the Montparnasse Tower Panoramic Observation Deck that offers an incredible panoramic view overlooking the Eiffel Tower and other iconic monuments in Paris, are also waiting to be discovered in the Experiences area.

Sporting events providers are also represented in the Experiences area, with exhibitors including XS2Event and Champions Travel Ltd , both offering access to many of the best events around the world.

Also in the Experience area, City Sightseeing , the ‘hop-on hop-off’ tours; Big Bus Tours which allows travellers to discover places on an open-top bus; and experience company City Cruises Ltd .

Last but not least, in the Transportation area, visitors can meet representatives from companies including car-hire operators and transport providers, such as:

European train ticket and rail pass provider Rail Europe ; car-rental giant Enterprise Rent-A-Car ; German car rental supplier Wheego Mobility ; and Global Passenger Network , an organisation of independent coach companies operating in more than 40 countries around the world.

Also, in the Transportation area will be representatives from the fast-growing river-cruise sector, including 14-ship operator Amadeus River Cruises , Dutch Cruise Line BV – which operates a fleet of nine river ships – and United Rivers AG , provider of tailor-made white label river-cruise operations.

Meanwhile, the subject of experiential travel is widely covered during the WTM London Conference Programme 2023.

The programme includes a session by Lonely Planet Vice President Tom Hall , entitled Captivating Experience-Seekers: Adopting the Next Generation Mindset , on the Innovate Stage on Tuesday 7 November, 10:30 – 11:10.

On Wednesday 8 November, 10:30 – 11:10, Vaishali Patel, Founder and Director, Vaishali Ltd ; Jo Fennell, Head of Sales for Northern Europe, GetYourGuide , and Nishank Gopalkrishnan, Chief Business Officer, TUI Musement , will take part in a panel discussion entitled Curating Unique Customer Experiences Anywhere and Everywhere .

Demi Moore ‘s new film, the feminist body horror “ The Substance ,” sees her bare it all, with several scenes featuring full nudity. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film on Monday, the 61-year-old actor discussed the “vulnerable experience.”

“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” Moore said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

“I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close  — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were,” she said. “But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.”

As the film progresses, Moore becomes horribly disfigured thanks to the abuse her other half Qualley is inflicting on her. By the film’s last act, she quite resembles Anjelica Huston from the 1990 film “The Witches,” after she transforms into a humpback abomination.

Dennis Quaid also stars in the film as an “asshole,” as he described his character during the presser. The late Ray Liotta was meant to have the role before his passing in May 2022, and Quaid dedicated his performance to him.

“In my heart, I dedicated this role to Ray Liotta, who was set to play it,” Quaid said. “It was this week, two years ago that he passed, so I’d like to remember him. He was such an incredible actor.”

Cannes went wild for “The Substance” at its premiere on Sunday night, giving the film an 11-minute standing ovation , the longest of the fest so far.

In an interview with Variety , the French director discussed the film’s feminist themes, saying that body horror is “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.”

With an undercurrent of #MeToo at this year’s festival as the movement grows in France, Fargeat hopes the film will shine even more light on the issue. “It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it.”
