"Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker's classic novel Dracula , The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter , which was chartered to carry private cargo — 50 unmarked wooden crates — from Carpathia to London. 

"Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew."

The script was written by Bragi F. Schut, Stefan Ruzowitzky and Zak Olkewicz.

In the Heights and Straight Outta Compton star Corey Hawkins plays the protagonist of The Last Voyage of the Demeter , Clemens, a doctor who joins the crew of the Demeter on its voyage. He is joined by Aisling Franciosi ( Game of Thrones , The Nightingale ) as Anna, a stowaway on the boat, Liam Cunningham ( Game of Thrones , Hunger ) as the captain of the Demeter and David Dastmalchian ( Boston Strangler , The Suicide Squad ) as his first mate.

Other members of the cast include Jon Jon Briones ( Ratched , American Horror Story ), Stefan Kapicic ( Deadpool , Better Call Saul ), Nikolai Nikolaeff ( Stranger Things , Bruised ) and Javier Botet ( IT , Mama ), who plays Dracula.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells a Dracula story with a twist, one that’s ripped straight from the pages of Bram Stoker ’s original and classic text.

Over the years, we’ve had no shortage of Dracula performances; at this point, he’s a bit like superhero movies: you’re never too far away from another one.

We’ve had old and creepy (1922’s Nosferatu), meta (1994’s Ed Wood), badly accented (1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula) and even nicely Nicolas Caged (2023’s Renfield), so you’d be forgiven for thinking cinema has sucked the character dry.

However, that’s where you’d be wrong.

With this year’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter, audiences will be treated to a claustrophobic story-within-a-story that has Transylvania’s most famous resident lurking at its core.

Here’s everything we know about it so far, from plot, cast, trailers and more.

When is The Last Voyage of the Demeter released?

The Last Voyage of the Demeter was set to be released in cinemas worldwide on Friday, 11 August however, that has since changed.

When the movie's original UK distributor eOne was bought out by Lionsgate the film's release date all-but disappeared and hasn't returned since. In short, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is currently lost at sea with no UK release date to be found.

Hopefully, this will change soon and perhaps we'll be able to watch the movie by Halloween. After all, it's directed by André Øvredal, the Norweigan filmmaker behind cult horror classics like The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Trollhunter and 2019’s Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark — so we’re in good hands when it comes to big-screen scares.

What is the plot of The Last Voyage of the Demeter?

The plot for Øvredal’s Dracula movie has its roots in Bram Stoker’s original 1897 novel Dracula, specifically the chapter entitled ‘The Captain’s Log.’

This thrilling section of Stoker’s story chronicles Dracula’s journey from rural Transylvania to bustling London via a merchant ship known as the Demeter. Stripped of his castle comforts, Count Dracula is confined to the shadows, while the ship’s poor crew remain oblivious to the danger that lurks below deck.

Sadly, that obliviousness doesn’t last too long as soon enough, the crew start to disappear one by one as Dracula’s bloodlust takes hold.

The film’s official synopsis mirrors these plot beats, teasing what Øvredal has in store.

“Strange and horrifying events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage from Transylvania to London, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship: a legendary vampire known as Dracula," it says, ominously. “When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.”

During a conversation with Entertainment Weekly , Øvredal doubled down on the strength of the film’s core concept, calling it “Alien-on-a-ship-in-1897.”

Consider us sold.

Who is starring in The Last Voyage of the Demeter?

With the action based primarily onboard its titular shadowy vessel, The Last Voyage of the Demeter relies on a compact cast to tell its story.

Liam Cunningham will play the ship’s hardy captain, the person everyone will no doubt be looking to when people start to mysteriously disappear. You’ll likely remember Cunningham best as Davros Seaworth in Game of Thrones.

He’ll be joined by The Suicide Squad’s own Polka-Dot Man, David Dastmalchian , as Wojchek, the ship’s trusty first mate. The Walking Dead ’s Corey Hawkins will play Clemens, the ship’s on-board doctor. Let’s hope he specialised in haematology.

Meanwhile, Aisling Franciosi, who starred in Game of Thrones and controversial thriller The Nightingale , will play Anna, a young runaway who probably wishes she picked a different ship to hitch a ride on.

As for the big bad himself, Øvredal’s Dracula will be played by Spanish performer and actor Javier Botet. When Botet was young he was diagnosed with a rare disorder known as Marfan Syndrome which resulted in extra joint flexibility and his limbs being a little longer than usual.

Using this to his advantage, Botet has appeared in a number of creepy classics including Guillermo del Toro ’s Crimson Peak, The Conjuring 2 and Øvredal’s own Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter could see him sink his teeth into his most visually impressive role yet as one of cinema’s most beloved movie monsters.

Also onboard is Irish star Chris Walley as Abrams and Nicolo Pasetti playing Deputy Hirsch. Stefan Kapičić, Jon Briones, Nikolai Nikolaeff, Woody Norman and Martin Furulund are also due to appear in the movie in undisclosed roles.

Is there a trailer for The Last Voyage of the Demeter?

Øvredal wasn’t wrong comparing The Last Voyage of the Demeter to Ridley Scott's Alien — as the movie’s first full trailer plays out like it’s set on a wooden version of the Nostromo.

Released in April 2023, the teaser introduced us to the Demeter’s crew as they slowly come to realise that something truly evil may be lurking in the cargo hold of their ship.

A few months later, in July 2023, a new trailer gave us another look at the Botet’s otherworldly Dracula.

Universal Pictures has set a summer 2023 wide release for DreamWorks Pictures’ The Last Voyage of the Demeter . The studio has shifted the release date for the adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula from Jan. 27, 2023 to August 11, 2023.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter centers on the merchant ship Demeter, chartered to carry fifty unmarked wooden crates from Carpathia to London, only for its doomed crew to endure strange events. Stalked each night by a merciless presence on board the ship, the Demeter eventually arrives off the shores of England as a charred, derelict wreck, with no trace of the crew.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter stars Corey Hawkins as a doctor aboard the Demeter. The film also stars Aisling Franciosi as an unwitting stowaway, Liam Cunningham as the ship’s captain and David Dastmalchian as the Demeter’s first mate.

The film is directed by André Øvredal, and is based on a script by Bragi F. Schut, Stefan Ruzowitzky and Zak Olkewicz. They adapted the chapter “The Captain’s Log” from Stoker’s Dracula.

The ensemble cast includes Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, Nikolai Nikolaeff and Javier Botet. The film is produced by Brad Fischer, Mike Medavoy and Arnold Messer, and is executive produced by Matthew Hirsch.

What happens when you put Dracula on a ship from Transylvania to England? And what happens when he gets hungry mid-voyage? This is the story of the Demeter, the ghost ship from the book Dracula. The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a new film following this story set to come out later this year.

This film follows the crew as they attempt to deal with whatever horror has boarded their ship. Will they make it out? Will the ship stay on course? Here's everything we know about The Last Voyage of the Demeter .

The Last Voyage of the Demeter: The Plot

The story is based on a single chapter from the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker , written in 1897. For many people, Dracula has been a series of scary movies or even just a legend of horror. However, when first published it was a sensation. One of the reasons was its reliance on an irregular narrative. This meant that it was one of the first to rely on things like diary entries, letters, and other written correspondence to tell the story. One of these was a short chapter simply called “The Captain’s Log."

For the crew of the Demeter, their journey begins relatively regularly. The captain realizes that his crew is on edge, but he isn't sure why. He watches as they bring aboard their supplies and a few large, very heavy (and somewhat suspicious) boxes.

After a few days at sea, a crew member goes missing. A few days later a crew member tells the captain that there is a strange man on board. The captain sees it as the sailors' superstition but agrees to search the ship. They find nothing of interest. When more of the crew begin disappearing it becomes clear that something is going on. Finally, there is a terrible storm during which another member of the crew goes missing, and the first mate begins to lose his mind. He insists there is something on board and that he will find it. However, he soon goes completely crazy and throws himself overboard.

When the captain finally realizes what is happening, he begins to pray, puts a rosary in his hands, and lashes himself to the helm, hoping that if something happens to him, the ship may still reach its destination. That is where the Captain’s Log ends.

The film may take a slightly different turn, perhaps taking cues from the Alien franchise where people are trapped with a monster and attempting to outwit it. There may also be more of a variety to the cast instead of it just being the sailors. However, depending on how the movie decides to function, as a thriller or as a true horror story, it may also have a different ending. Although it may be more interesting to have it end essentially with Dracula “winning” and the ship arriving in England with him on board and ready for the story to continue.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter: The Cast

Since the move was announced two years ago the cast has shifted dramatically. Originally, Viggo Mortensen was set to star as the captain, but he dropped out of the project. This may have been due to the amount of time it was taking to finalize details in preproduction.

However, the cast now features a good number of younger actors with some familiar faces mixed in to round out everything. The captain will be played by inestimable Liam Cunningham ( Game of Thrones ), who will bring his own form of gravitas to the role. Corey Hawkins ( Straight Outta Compton ) will play Clemens, a doctor aboard the Demeter. Aisling Franciosi ( God’s Creatures ) will play a stowaway, and David Dastmalchian ( The Suicide Squad ) will play Wojchek, Demeter's first mate.

In an interesting bit of casting, actor Javier Botet will play the role of Dracula . Botet is best known for playing creatures in a variety of films including Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark , It: Chapter 2 , and Slender Man . The Spanish actor is not particularly known for speaking roles, so this may hint at how Dracula will be portrayed. While we may see him as a creature, he may not have any vocal interactions with the crew of the ship.

The film is being directed by André Øvredal ( Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark ) and is being produced by Phoenix Pictures and Universal Pictures.

Release Date

The Last Voyage of the Demeter will be released in theaters on August 11, 2023.

Everything Else We Know

As previously stated, the film has languished in development limbo for a number of years. The cast was originally announced as featuring Viggo Mortensen, Noomi Rapace, and Jude Law. Unfortunately, all three jumped ship when it looked like the film might not make it through pre-production. However, the new cast seems better suited to their roles and the film has potential as André Øvredal has a decent track record when it comes to horror.

There have been over 200 films featuring some form of the Dracula character which often makes it difficult for people to be excited about them. However, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is not a simple retelling. It is a way of filling in the gap in a story that has been remade far too many times . The fact that the Captain's Log has never been exclusively focused on means that there is quite a bit a director can do. In fact, the story has the option of going in a variety of directions that might be different from anything we've seen before. André Øvredal already wowed us with his other horror outings, and now he's been given the opportunity to try again.

We're currently going through a bit of a renaissance when it comes to movies based on Bram Stoker's iconic novel Dracula.

Earlier in 2023, Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult starred in the horror comedy Renfield , while The Lighthouse and The Northman director Robert Eggers is currently at work on a new version of Nosferatu with Bill Skarsgård playing the iconic vampire.

And there's also another new film coming to our screens in the (hopefully) not-too-distant future: The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

The movie focuses on one chapter – The Captain's Log – from Stoker's novel, which recounts the titular voyage from Carpathia to London on which Dracula causes all sorts of havoc.

The film was initially scheduled for a UK release in August 2023, so cinemagoers might be wondering how long they have to wait to see the film. Read on for everything you need to know.

The short answer is that yes, The Last Voyage of the Demeter has been delayed – and unfortunately, it's currently unclear when it will arrive in UK cinemas.

The film is scheduled to arrive across the Atlantic on Friday 11th August 2023, and it had originally been planned that it would also debut on these shores at a similar date.

However, a spanner was put in the works when eOne – who were distributing the film in the UK, as opposed to Universal in the US – was acquired by Lionsgate, which seems to have put the release plans on hold.

Cineworld has confirmed in several tweets to disappointed fans that the film "has been delayed indefinitely" and there is currently no new date listed on the Film Distributors' Association website – so it appears it's going to have to be a waiting game for now.

We'll update this page as soon as any more details come to light.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter plot

The film faithfully recounts a key chapter of Bram Stoker's famous text, depicting the doomed journey of the titular ship from the perspective of its captain and crew – who are terrorised by the horrifying Dracula.

The official synopsis reads: "Strange and horrifying events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage from Transylvania to London, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship: a legendary vampire known as Dracula.

"When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew."

Key cast members in the cast include The Walking Dead's Corey Hawkins as a doctor named Clemens, The Fall's Aisling Franciosi as an unwitting stowaway called Anna, Game of Thrones star Liam Cunningham as Captain Elliot and Oppenheimer's David Dastmalchian as his first mate Wojchek.

Meanwhile, the role of Dracula himself is played by Spanish star Javier Botet – who is well known for playing creature roles in horror films, and whose previous credits include REC, Slender Man, Crimson Peak, The Conjuring 2, It and Insidious: The Last Key.

Last Voyage Of The Demeter Release Date Rerouted To Late Summer 2023

" The Last Voyage of the Demeter " is sailing from January 27, 2023 to August 11, 2023, according to Deadline . A late summer spot is typically a more respected date for a release than late January, though there is no official information listed in terms of why the shift is happening. The Universal Pictures and DreamWorks project is based on the chapter from Bram Stoker's "Dracula" entitled "The Captain's Log," and will tell us what happened on the merchant ship "Demeter," which transported a certain very famous vampire from Carpathia to England. As you likely know if you're a vampire fan, Dracula had to have some of his native soil with him at all times, which was contained within some of the fifty unmarked wooden crates on the ship. Those crates also contained (dum dum dum)  him ! And since the journey is long, and vampires get snacky, the ship's crew is in danger. 

The film is directed by André Øvredal ("Trollhunter," "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark") from a screenplay by Bragi F. Schut, Stefan Ruzowitzky, and Zak Olkewicz. I love the idea of this film, though I'm curious to see exactly how it ends since the story, uh, doesn't exactly end well for the sailors. (I also find it interesting that Demeter is the Greek goddess of growing things, and Dracula is a very dead thing.)

The cast includes Corey Hawkins ("In the Heights," "Straight Outta Compton") as Clemens, who is a doctor who has joined the crew. Aisling Franciosi ("Game of Thrones," "The Nightingale") plays a stowaway (bad choice of boats, friend), Liam Cunningham ("Game of Thrones," "Clash of the Titans") plays the captain of The Demeter, and David Dastmalchian ("Dune," "The Suicide Squad") is the first mate for the ship. Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, Nikolai Nikolaeff, and Javier Botet round out the rest of the cast.

"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" is produced by Brad Fischer and by Academy Award-nominated producer Mike Medavoy and Arnold Messer for Phoenix Pictures. It is executive produced by Matthew Hirsch. It will be nice to see this actually hit a screen because it's been in development for 20 years, with directors like David Slade, Marcus Nispel, Neil Marshall, Stefan Ruzowitzky, and Robert Schwentke all trying and failing to get it out of port. 

It's such a cool idea, and I can't wait — though now we'll all have to wait a few months longer.

With the horrors caused by Dracula, there's no question that Clemens will make it his life's mission to hunt the vampire down and slay him for good. According to Collider , Universal Pictures has finally set The Last Voyage of the Demeter digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release date for its latest adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel. The home video release comes after nearly two months since the supernatural thriller had its theatrical release.

When the release date for The Last Voyage of the Demeter Digital, Blu-ray & DVD?

The Last Voyage of the Demeter will be available to purchase on digital, Blu-ray and DVD, starting on October 17. Its home video release will feature more than 30 minutes of bonus content including deleted scenes and an alternate opening. During its theatrical run, the film was considered a box office bomb after it failed to meet its box office expectations. It only earned a global gross of over $20 million against a reported budget of around $45 million.

“The film tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London,” reads the synopsis. “Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. 'Stopmotion' Review: This Hand-Crafted Shudder Horror Film Is One of a Kind

Though horror is often a place to discover movies that you’ve never seen before , it is hard to think of one that is quite like Robert Morgan 's intriguing feature debut Stopmotion . Namely, this is because it draws upon the beauty of stop-motion animation to create something frequently terrifying . While there have certainly been prior works that make use of this technique to explore horror elements, whether it is the magnificent descent into darkness Mad God or the underrated more family-friendly flick Wendell & Wild , this one feels truly original in its presentation. Even as its narrative can be a bit derivative and familiar, the hand-crafted artistry on display is undeniable. Merge it with a spectacular performance from the great Aisling Franciosi , and you've got a darkly delightful yet still sinister work of horror.

A stop-motion animator struggles to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother.

What Is 'Stopmotion' About?

This all begins with the talented stop-motion filmmaker Ella Blake (Franciosi) who is working on a project for her ailing mother Suzanne ( Stella Gonet ) as she can’t do so herself. The stress of having the menacing matriarch looking over her shoulder, directing and critiquing her every move, is exhausting for both of them. Considering how intensive and tedious stop-motion already is, the way Suzanne puts pressure on her daughter makes it almost unbearable. Whether this comes out of fear that she will never be able to make something herself or something darker is something Stopmotion frequently alludes to without fully diving headfirst into it . When Suzanne has a medical episode in the middle of one of their days of shooting and falls into a coma, Ella now has a chance to make a stop-motion film of her own. She then moves into an apartment to focus all of her time on her work. However, the building seems almost abandoned. That is, save for one little girl ( Caoilinn Springall ) who begins helping Ella with the story that she is struggling with. As she begins to use…let’s just say other materials for the project that she finds to be rather useful, the film and her own life start to blur together. With each segment of the grim stop-motion creation she makes, it feels like the Ella who started it may be at risk of being locked away in the story she’s creating.

Initially, there is something liberatory to the experience as she no longer has to contend with her mother being there controlling her every move. The blunt reading of this is that it was Ella who was more of a puppet than anything. What makes this work is that, rather crucially, Morgan and his co-writer Robin King don’t go for easy metaphors about trauma. For what is essentially the entirety of the film, Ella seems to be dealing with some sort of greater pain that she is never quite able to articulate. It is as if she is trying to speak through the film that she is working on, but doesn’t quite know how to. She struggles with the story, though seems to work best when doing so subconsciously, as the darker ideas and imagery come pouring out. Stopmotion is best when we are watching these stop-motion bits as they are both well-constructed and generally creepy . The excellent use of sound, more than some on-the-nose dialogue that is scattered throughout, speaks volumes about what this film is becoming.

When they bleed into the real world, with one striking sequence seeing Ella briefly become one of her creations while running from a figure that is chasing her down, Stopmotion delicately taps into something disquieting. It feels most in conversation with something like 2021’s Censor in terms of how it observes someone starting to lose their grasp on the line between the artifice of cinema and what is going on in the making of it . Though it isn’t always as confident in how it does this, too frequently cutting away rather abruptly rather than lingering in the fear, moments like a scene where Ella is frozen with fear on a bed cuts right to the bone.

Aisling Franciosi Is Spectacular In 'Stopmotion'

Just as importantly, the central performance from Franciosi is what helps give the story a more cutting edge. Seeing her go from being the reserved daughter trying to quietly do right by her mother to someone creating for herself, no matter the cost to herself or others, is just as frequently brilliant to behold as the stop-motion creations. This should come as no surprise to all who’ve seen Franciosi in Jennifer Kent ’s staggering The Nightingale , but it also is nice to see her being given more to work with after being wasted in last year’s The Voyage of the Last Demeter . Just as the conclusion of the film worms its way into your mind in an often terrifying fashion, it is her performance that maintains its hold over your heart. For all the ways Ella is getting lost in her creations, Franciosi never does. She gives the character a real humanity just as we feel her grasp on it slipping away the longer she spends throwing herself into her art.

The film doesn’t skimp on the blood and violence in the finale, with Morgan pushing it as far as he can, but Franciosi remains just as much a force to reckon with. Even a simple scene in a hospital where her face takes on a more sinister expression as she delivers a cathartically cruel line with relish is mesmerizing. Immediately following this, when Ella says she is the one who needs to end this, we feel just how true this is in Franciosi's voice. That the final shot lingering on her face is where it leaves its greatest impact proves quite poetically fitting. In the end, Ella may be at risk of being swallowed up by her art, yet it is Franciosi who gives it shape and form to provide it with one final blow before it all comes to a painful close .

Stopmotion is a one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted horror film with a great performance from Aisling Franciosi.

• The stop-motion sequences are all beautifully well-made even as they lean into increasing depths of brutality.
• Aisling Franciosi is as great as ever, holding the heart of the film in her hands with ease.
• The ending ties this all together, lingering when it counts on the film's most quietly haunting shot.
• Elements of the story are a little familiar and blunt in the beginning.
• It frequently lacks confidence, cutting away in moments where the fear could linger for a bit longer.
