Keahua Forestry Arboretum offers a variety of plant life from monkeypod and eucalyptus trees to exotic mango. The park has several picnic pavilions to relax on and fresh swimming pools and streams to cool off on a hot day. Several of the island's popular hikes like the Kuilau and Powerline trails begin here. You may also catch a glimpse of Mt. Wai'ale'ale if it is not wearing its customary robe of clouds.

Two easy 15-minute trails lead visitors throughout the park. To get to Keahua take Highway 56 north from Lihue. You will cross the Waimea River Bridge and then turn mauka onto Kuamo'o Road. The arboretum is 5 miles up the road.

Keahua Arboretum

  • Staff review
  • Photos ( 19 )

If you’d like to experience the magic of standing alongside huge rainbow Eucalyptus trees, definitely plan to make the trip to the Keahua Arboretum. The natural landscape never fails to impress, while the river coming down the mountain offers plenty of chances for fun. Want to sit back and relax while soaking in the sights? Be sure to bring your picnic supplies along for the ride.

Located at the eastern edge of the Lihue-Koloa Forest Reserve, Keahua Arboretum serves as the perfect place to take a nature retreat. Rainbow Eucalyptus trees serve as the star of the show, although there are endless native and introduced plant species all across the park. Largely established by the University of Hawaii, all the trees, shrubs, and flowers perfectly complement each other to create an idyllic landscape full of wonders.

You can soak in the sights by taking a slow stroll through the park or while having a picnic at one of the many tables scattered across Keahua Arboretum. Although the tables are largely in various states of disrepair, they work just fine for a leisurely lunch. If you’re concerned about their cleanliness, layout a cloth over the surface, and then roll out your picnic spread. If you cannot find any tables open, you can put the cloth straight on the ground instead and enjoy your lunch in any spot you’d like.

If you’d like to take your Keahua Arboretum experience to the next level, you can take a dip in the river during your visit. The fresh spring water feels absolutely wonderful year-round, although it’s especially nice as warm sunshine beams down on you. There are no lifeguards on site, of course, so you’ll have to be careful in the water. There are usually other people onsite splashing around, but if they have to call for someone to help you, it’ll likely be a long wait until they’re able to get there.

The road to the Keahua Arboretum is often rather rough going, after all, leaving most visitors moving down the path at a crawl. All along the way, you have to watch out for huge potholes, especially during rainy weather. The ruts and holes often turn into big mud pits that wreak havoc on suspension parts and overwhelm tire tread.

Even in 4×4 vehicles, there’s a pretty good chance of getting stuck if you take the wrong route around the obstructions. Thankfully, you can often find parking further down the road and then walk up along the shoulder. Just be sure to watch for cars in case anyone else tries to brave the rough roads.

As with all natural areas on the island, always plan to pack out what you bring with you. Although there are garbage cans by the restroom at Keahua Arboretum, they are not emptied nearly enough, leaving items strewed about by wildlife. So, if you can bring a garbage bag and pack out your trash, your efforts will go a long way toward helping preserve the landscape. You can even go above and beyond by grabbing any extra trash you see on the ground and packing it out as well.

Insider Tips: -Before you go, buy local bug spray and apply it as directed. Otherwise, you’re likely to get swarmed by mosquitos and more. -Need a bathroom visit? Just go right up the hill and to the left of the bridge. This outhouse-style restroom does not get nearly enough attention throughout the year, so its cleanliness level leaves much to be desired. -Never carve into the trees or otherwise disturb the natural landscape.

Keahua Arboretum - Pathway to the World Famous Jurassic Park Gate

Keahua Arboretum – Pathway to the World Famous Jurassic Park Gate

In Places by Makana Charters May 17, 2019 Leave a Comment

You might already have a bucket list of things to do on the Royal coconut Coast of Kauai . While state parks and beaches often top the list, there are some incredible places which most people don’t explore enough.

On Kauai’s coconut coast, away from the city crowd, exists a lush and tranquil forest. It is a serene and rarely crowded spot near the history-rich town of Wailua and is a perfect example the world needs today for the preservation of forests. Yes, as you’ve rightly guessed, it is the Keahua Arboretum.

Keahua Arboretum

Keahua arboretum is a part of the Wailua section of 12,500 acre Lihue-Koloa Forest Reserve. The reserve was established for the purpose of protecting the watershed areas that were vitally important for the lowland agricultural economy.

The Arboretum is a lush and magical place spread over 30 acres of land. It is home to steady streams, refreshing pools, lush green meadows and intriguing species of birds and trees. Although Rainbow Eucalyptus, Monkeypod and Mango Trees can be seen all over the forest, Keahua Arboretum boasts of more than 20 varieties of rare and exotic species of flora.

The Rainbow Eucalyptus, as you’ve guessed from the name, is a rare specie with a naturally colorful bark. They look absolutely gorgeous under sunlight as the bright palette of colors call for a mystical experience.

To access Keahua Arboretum, follow Highway 580 (Kuamoo Road) mauka for six and a half miles from Wailua. Follow the road all the way until you are in Keahua Arboretum.

The parking lot is reached after crossing a spillway. It is not advisable to cross the spillway during heavy flow or rains, which is why a bridge was built recently for safe access into Keahua Forestry Arboretum.

Following the spillway, the road turns into dirt and leads into the arboretum. It is called the Loop Road. From here on, you will be led through the grove of rainbow eucalyptus trees for about a mile. There are a number of pavilions and picnic tables provided for relaxation in this area. The location and its conditions are ideal for having a fun and distraction-free picnic with your family and friends.

The arboretum has a stream that runs through it, eventually forming two pools, before it goes on to join the Wailua River. Since the temperature here is cooler than on the beaches, the pools are icy and offer a refreshing dip.

The Jurassic Park Gate and Blue Hole Hike (Loop Road)

Kauai is a preferred location for the Jurassic Park movie franchise. The wildly popular Jurassic Park Gate is only a few miles from the Keahua Arboretum and be accessed via a 4WD or by hike. The nasty, yet, driveable pothole-ridden dirt road has turned dangerous in the recent years, owing to the storms and lack of maintenance.

The hike to Jurassic Park Gate is roughly 3.5 miles from the Keahua Arboretum. What remains of the iconic gate today are only the two cement posts. But, the view from the gate is dead gorgeous- just the way we remember it from the movie.

On the way to the gate, you’ll have to cross a second spillway (exercise utmost caution) and a yellow gate. It is advisable to bring a local guide with you as the presence of side-trails along the way increase the possibility of getting lost in the jungle.

A trail beyond the gate leads to the mystical “Blue Hole”, a crater beneath Kauai’s rainiest spot- Mount Waialeale. The path leading to the hole is only for the intrepid hikers out there. It involves crossing streams, jumping over boulders, climbing steep cliffs and coursing through knee deep mud. There are waterfalls converging into pools which you can use to cool off and relax before you are back on foot. Although it’s a highly challenging hike, once you reach the destination, the view is mindblowing. It’s a place where very few people on this earth have stepped foot on.

The Kuilau Ridge Trail

Kuilau Ridge Trail is an easy hike, well suited for those who are short on time. The trailhead is located inside the Keahua Arboretum, just before the park area on the right. The trail turned road, constructed for the purpose of fire-fighting in the area, seems well-maintained.

The trail begins with an introduction of well preserved native and exotic plant life. Keep looking for views of Kawaikini and Mount Waialeale on the west and the Makaleha mountain range on the north, unless it is blocked by the ridge.

One mile into the hike, you will reach a grassy field bordered by an Ohia forest. It has picnic tables and serves as an ideal relaxation point. It helps to pack some food as it’ll be useful for refuelling during the hike. After a short descent and ascent, you can catch glimpse of the Nounou mountain, which is famously known as the Sleeping Giant.

Gradually, you will reach a point where the Kuilau trail intersects with the Moalepe trail. Walk along the trail until you reach a footbridge over the Opaekaa stream. A few minutes after that, you will be greeted by a fork where you’re supposed to take the left and walk between the eucalyptus and fern filled region.

The trail ends with a spectacular view of Kapehua’ala, the highest peak of Makahela mountain range.

One more trail that originates from Keahua Arboretum is the Powerline trail, which we had mentioned in our post on popular north shore hikes in Kauai . This 13-mile trail ends in Princeville, serving hikers as their gateway to Kauai’s north shore.

The presence of a dozen rainbow eucalyptus trees, meditative nature hike, swimming pools and access to the Kuilau Trail and Powerline Trail should be exciting enough for you to visit the Keahua Arboretum. Get your cameras for an insta-worthy shot amidst the stunning Rainbow Eucalyptus trees. Considering the photos, people back home are definitely going to envy you.

Keahua Arboretum Kauai

For a change of scenery on Kauai, head inland up tree-lined Kuamoa Road to the beautiful Keahua Arboretum. Here, near the island’s center, the weather is a little cooler than down at the beach. Mostly shaded, and with a stream running through it, the arboretum is a nice place for a picnic lunch. Cool off in the stream and take a stroll around the green grounds. And be sure to check out the colorful Rainbow Eucalyptus Trees located across the road from the parking lot.

The peaceful arboretum is a favorite destination for local residents and tourists. Families and children can be seen hanging out at the stream, fishermen can be seen fishing near the bridge and young adults can be seen hanging out in the parking lot. Tourists are often seen strolling the grounds and checking out the trees.

Picnic tables are plentiful at the arboretum. A very basic restroom is located on a small hill beyond the eucalyptus trees.

Several trails are nearby, including the Kuilau Ridge Trail (just before the arboretum) and the Power Line Trail (located about a quarter mile past the arboretum).

The Keahua Arboretum is located at the end of Kuamo’o Road ( Hwy 580) past Opaeka’a Falls . This road is also known as Loop Road . Past the arboretum, the road continues (as a dirt road) farther into the interior of Kauai for another 3.5 miles. The Jurassic Park Gate is located on this section of road. At the end of the road is a small concrete dam and the trail head for the hike to the Blue Hole. We do not recommend traveling past the arboretum in a vehicle as the road is in very poor condition.

Shaka Guide's Wailua Valley and Waterfalls Tour Itinerary

July 05, 2024

Shaka Guide

Introduction

Shaka Guide’s Wailua Valley and Waterfalls Tour explores the lush landscapes that give Kaua'i its nickname, the Garden Isle.

On this excursion, you can visit three waterfalls, hike four trails, walk the grounds of a Hindu monastery, and snorkel at a beach that’s perfect for the entire family!

This tour has two starting points: Kapa’a and Lihue. No matter where you start, all the stops are the same.

Plan to spend 6-8 hours exploring on this tour.

*This itinerary starts in Lihue. At the end of this itinerary, we’ll note some ways your day might look different if you’re starting in Kapa’a.

wailua valley and waterfalls tour map stops

As we’ve mentioned, this tour packs a lot in for a relatively short distance. You’ll want to get an early start, around 9 a.m. especially if you’re planning on visiting the Hindu Monastery. This sacred spot closes at noon daily.

Snap a Photo at Wailua Falls

Approximate time 15 minutes

waterfalls aerial overview

Wailua Falls is an iconic 173-foot waterfall surrounded by jungle forest.

This spot is just a quick photo op as there’s no hiking to the falls.

It’s one of the most epic falls on the island, so you’ll definitely want to make the stop.

PRO TIP!  If you want to grab some local food for a picnic down the road, check out Konohiki Seafood in Lihue. They specialize in items like poke and plate lunches, but they also sell pies, mochi, and spam musubi.

Don’t worry, we’ll guide you there on the tour. If you’re starting the tour in Lihue, we recommend you pick up some snacks and water here. There are very few options to get food until you reach Kapa’a. Not hungry? Just skip this spot.

Snorkel at Lydgate Beach Park

Approximate time: 1 hour

Lydgate Park is a cool place for kids both young and old alike. Little ones will love the gigantic Kamalani playground.

There are also rock-enclosed pools that make swimming safe and fun.

The protective pools were constructed so that reef fish can still come and go as they please.

You can also find picnic tables and restrooms here.

Visit Ancient Hawaiian Historical Sites

Approximate time: 45 minutes

At this point in the tour, there are a few historical sites one after the other. These sites include four heiaus, which are ancient Hawaiian temples, and birthing stones where mothers of royal lineage would come to give birth to future chiefs.

Here are the spots and how much time you should expect to spend at each:

  • Rising Sun Heiau - 10 minutes
  • Hauola Heiau - 10 minutes
  • Holoholoku Heiau - 10 minutes
  • Birthing Stones - 10 minutes
  • Poli'ahu Heiau - 5 minutes

We'll tell you the significance of each place as we drive. You'll come away with a better understanding of Hawaii's traditional culture and religion.

Have Another Waterfall Photo Shoot at 'Opaeka'a Falls

Approximate time: 15 minutes

Located in Wailua River State Park, 'Opaeka’a Falls is a spectacular 150-ft waterfall that flows over volcanic basalt rocks.

This is another stop for a photo op right next to the parking lot as there’s no hike to the falls.

If you have the time, follow the path here and cross the road for a nice view of Wailua River.

PRO TIP! There’s a public restroom in the fall’s parking lot if you need to stop for a bathroom break.

Marvel at Kauai's Hindu Monastery and Walk Through a Sacred Forest

Approximate time: 45 minutes

hindu monastery with statue

PLEASE NOTE:  Kauai's Hindu Monastery closes at noon.

Nestled on the outskirts of Wailua State Park, you’ll find a 363-acre Hindu monastery that’s considered one of the holiest sites in the Hindu religion.

This Kadavul Temple is home to the largest quartz crystal on earth surrounded by 108 golden statues of the Hindu god Siva.

Just down the road a bit from the monastery, you can also walk through the site’s sacred garden where you’ll see rudraksha trees, a shrine to Ganesha, and a Hindu demi-god in the form of an elephant.

For more information about visiting this site, such as dress code and etiquette, visit its website here.

There is no entrance fee, but donations are welcome.

Kuilau Ridge Hike OR Keahua Arboretum Walk

OR Skip these and move on to the Sleeping Giant Hike or Ho'opi'i Falls Hike (see below)

Approximate time: 1 hour

Next up, we’ll get to some hiking! You’ll have four hikes to choose from on this tour, and they are all in a row.

The first two are the Kuilau Ridge Hike and the Keahua Arboretum Walk.

The Kuilau Ridge hike is a relatively flat trail with a broad shaded path through an old-growth forest.

It’s quite long, but we recommend just hiking the first mile or so.

If you plan on doing one of the later hikes -- Sleeping Giant or Ho'opi'i (or both) -- you might want to skip the Kuilau Ridge Trail and stroll through Keahua Arboretum.

This is technically more of a leisurely walk than a hike. Here, you’ll see local plant species like monkeypod trees. If you’re lucky you might even spot a rainbow eucalyptus tree!

download wailua valley tour

Sleeping Giant Trail OR Ho'opi'i Waterfall Hike

Approximate time: 1.5 -2 hours

At this point in the tour, you’ll have the choice of two more hikes. We recommend you choose one of the two.

The first is Sleeping Giant (Nounou Mountain) - West Trailhead. Technically, Sleeping Giant has three hikes of varying difficulties, but our tour takes you to the Sleeping Giant West Trail, which is the easiest.

This trek is just over two miles round trip, and once you reach the top, you’ll be amazed by the sweeping views of Kauai’s coast and Kapa’a Town.

If you’re looking for the chance to hike to a waterfall, you might want to skip Sleeping Giant and head straight to the nearby Ho'opi'i Waterfall Hike.

On this hike, you’ll meander along a forest trail until you reach the first of two waterfalls.

If you want to swim, you’ll have to continue past the first fall to the second where you’ll find a rope swing that you can use to jump into the pool below.

This hike is fairly easy and considered family-friendly. Be warned -- there are some points where your shoes will get a little wet!

Important Note : Many of Hawaii's freshwater streams and pools contain harmful bacteria like leptospirosis. Ho'opi'i Falls is no exception. Some visitors have gotten sick after swimming in the pools here. If you still decide to swim at the falls, you do so at your own risk. You can minimize your risk of infection by not getting water in your eyes, nose, ears, and open sores.

Flash Flood Risk : There is also a risk of flash flooding, so pay close attention to the weather reports. If there has been rain, especially in the mountains, it's best to skip swimming.

AFTERNOON

Spend the late or early afternoon in kapa’a town.

Approximate time: 45+ minutes

keahua arboretum tours

Kapa’a Town is a seaside neighborhood with cute restaurants, a few hotels, and some historic landmarks.

Spend the afternoon learning about these sites, walking around the town, visiting local shops, and trying some Hawaiian food!

For the landmarks in Kapa’a Town, we’ll have you pull into parking lots to listen to stories.

Here’s what you’ll find:

  • Kapa’a Library and Mo'ikeha Railroad Bridges - 5 minutes
  • Japanese Lantern - 5 minutes

Eat Lunch at a Local Shop

Approximate time: 30 minutes

After you’ve finished learning about the history of some of Kapa’a’s landmarks, we’re sure you’ll be ready for some lunch.

Pull over into a nearby parking lot (we’ll guide you there) and stop for a bite to eat.

We recommend Pono Market for a poke plate lunch, but we’re sure you’ll notice all the cute little cafes and restaurants in Kapa’a. Take your pick and refuel.

PRO TIP! You’re right by Kapa'a Beach Park--so take your lunch or dinner and have a picnic on the beach. You could even go for an afternoon swim!

Take In Views of Sleeping Giant

Approximate Time: 5 minutes

After lunch, we have one more scenic spot on the tour. You’ll pull over into a parking lot to learn about Sleeping Giant and view the mountain from a completely different vantage point.

Return to Lihue

coconut at sunset

Now that you’ve learned about Nounou Mountain (Sleeping Giant) we’ll take you back to the road where you’ll make your return to Lihue.

PRO TIP! Optional Side Trip to Smith’s Tropical Paradise in Kapa’a: Here you can rent a kayak and paddle up the river or take the Smith Family’s Wailua River Cruise to the Fern Grotto.

It’s a lovely boat ride with a narrated tour that comes complete with live music and a hula show. If you’re here around dinner time,  check out the Smith Family Garden  and Luau, which is one of the best on Kaua'i! Advance reservations recommended.

If you’re taking the tour from Kapa’a instead of Lihue, here are some ways your day will look different:

  • You’ll visit all the landmarks in Kapa’a Town in the morning, versus the end of the day.
  • You should bring snacks -- the only place to grab a bite midday will be at a local minimart on your way out of the Ho'opi'i hike. We still recommend waiting till you reach Kapa’a for a proper meal.
  • You’ll return to Kapa’a in the mid-late afternoon which means you can stay and visit the beach park for sunset!

When you’re in Hawai'i, we ask that you act respectfully toward the locals, land, and wildlife.

Please pick up your trash; never touch any marine life, plants, or other animals; and avoid spots that are unsafe.

Hawaii’s natural resources are precious. It’s up to all of us to help preserve these resources.

  • First Aid It is important to know that cuts in tropical climates should be monitored closely. Don not expose open wounds or cuts to river water.
  • Proper Footwear There are a variety of footwear options to choose from. The best advise is to wear what is comfortable for you. Do not break in new shoes along a hiking trail.
  • Clothing  Dress in layers so you can protect your skin from the tropical sun. Wearing a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen is recommended. A light rain jacket is recommended.

We were visiting 'Opaeka'a Falls when someone told us there was Rainbow Eucalyptus Trees and a Stream if you keep following the road. We took his advice and Im so glad we did! Such an exciting find. Peaceful & Quiet, Trees are beautiful, and by the parking lot there's Picnic Tables available if you want to relax and swim in the water. You definitely need 4WD if you're feeling adventurous. Dirt road, Pot holes, Water crossings, and Ankle deep mud! Definitely take in account the weather, don't come here if it's raining heavily. We came on a nice sunny day, but I can't imagine hiking or driving on the trails in bad conditions. If you're more into basic touristy activities, then you should avoid coming here! If you go here make sure to apply mosquito repellent! They feasted on my legs . Since I visited during the summer, the area was quite dry and I wasn't v motivated to take photos here (probably because of the little vampires )

This is a beautiful spot for a photo or a picnic. Decent parking and several shaded picnic tables widely spaced along creekside. The bark on the mini-forest of rainbow eucalyptus trees is beautiful. If you've never seen these trees before, this is highly recommended.

The initial stop in the parking lot is very beautiful with the rainbow Eucalyptus trees and the walk along the water. But take your keep up the dirt road and you will be able to cross the river. Swim in the refreshing river. Or go all the way to the end where you can't cross the river anymore and enjoy the beauty of this beautiful location.

It's a hiking trail with rainbow eucalyptus trees at the trailhead. GPS will probably get confused. From Hwy 56 in Wailua take HWY 580 about 6 miles, passing Opaeka'a Falls and Kamokila Hawaiian Village along the way(bonus). After taking Hwy 580 the 6ish miles there will be a small parking lot on right and trailhead on left directly across street from parking. The rainbow eucalyptus trees are the first trees on the trail and worth the trip up in my opinion. The hike is an added bonus if the weather is nice.

This place was a pain to find. I entered the address into my iPhone Maps app and my friend and I were directed to some random place that wasn't even close to the arboretum. I switched to my Google Maps app, but it didn't really indicate that you just follow the Kuamo'o Rd. Hwy 580 until it ends. After some frustration, we ended up figuring it out... but we had asked some locals during our attempts to find this place and they had NO idea what place we were asking about. Anyway, for anyone trying to GPS this place? Get on the Kuamo'o Rd. Hwy 580 and follow it until the end. Once you get to the end of the official highway (through some very wooded/secluded/windy looking parts of the road), you'll see the parking spots available, the water covered walkway, and the like. Once there, the arboretum was mostly fun to walk through. Initially, my friend and I came here because we wanted to follow the trail to the poles that remain from the Jurassic Park entrance signs. We ended up picking a different trail though(I believe you can find the entrance poles by following the Powerline Trail here in the arboretum) and just walking. Forewarning, the trail can get VERY muddy... even though it hadn't rained that day. It's also covered in plenty of potholes, and I can't imagine driving the rental vehicle through the pathways... though some people clearly do (over the 4+ hours we were walking, 2 or 3 cars with groups of visitors to Kauai passed asking for directions to certain parts of the park, etc). We were walking along the path towards the waterfall in the arboretum and started hearing gunshots in the background. There's a sign that notes the start of a hunting zone in a certain area of the arboretum, but it's still disconcerting to hear the shots in the background... even when you're not heading in that direction. My friend was getting pretty anxious, so we ended up turning around without getting to the waterfall or the Jurassic Park entrance poles. It *IS* a nice hike... and I had no issues with the mud or having to wade through water of whatever. I had brought appropriate hiking shoes (which I wasn't even planning to clean or take back to the mainland), and that's a must for hiking around the area. There aren't many people in this place either (though you will find some folks driving the path who offer to help get you where you're going, etc.). So it's fairly quiet... minus, uh, the gunshots. TL;DR Difficult to find, but enjoyable sights. Not one of those "can't miss" locations on Kauai though, and I'm kinda regretting that we bothered (since we ultimately didn't get to see much of anything).

I think there is some deceptive advertising going on. This is not an arboretum! You drive really, really far to the end of the road and....nothing. There is a stream. There is also a trail but because it rains so much it is too muddy to walk. So you stand around a few minutes to look at the stream, look at some cool trees with colored bark, and then drive back really, really far. If I had known it was not a real arboretum I would not have bothered.

Photo of Tioni S.

Not hard to find!! Take Kuamoo Road all the way to the very end, where you will find a river flowing over the road/bridge-like path (see my pics and you will know what I am talking about). If you have 4 wheel drive, you can drive across the river and continue to follow the road, there you will find the Jurassic Park gate. While driving to the Keahua Arboretum, the road will feel endless, but don't worry, as long as you don't take any turns, you will not get lost!! Just follow that winding road all the way up. You can visit Opaekaa Falls and the Wailua River lookout on your way up to see these beautiful eucalyptus rainbow trees. Have fun!!

keahua arboretum tours

This is not an aboretum. This is the real jungle hike that leads to some Jurassic Park filming locations, but the catch is you need a machete and williness to hike through more than ankle deep mud on overgrown unrecognizable paths. It's a popular river playground for the locals.

A bit of a drive from town, but very beautiful. I had never seen rainbow eucalyptus trees in person and I was not disappointed. More trees than I expected. Pretty muddy, but there was enough paring and a stream to rinse off in.

Keahua arboretum.

1 star rating

Part of the vast Lihue–Koloa Forest Reserve, this grove of rainbow eucalyptus (named for its colorful bark), monkeypod, and mango trees may not be well maintained from an arborist’s standpoint, but it’s a nifty, family-friendly place to picnic and dip in a cool stream, particularly after a hike on the nearby Kuilau Trail . A short loop trail leads to a swimming hole with a rope swing; be sure to wear mosquito repellent. Facilities include picnic tables, pavilions, and composting toilets. Part of the fun is getting here: The main parking area and picnic tables are across a spillway at the paved end of Kuamoo Road, about 5 miles inland from Opaekaa Falls. (Please use good judgment when deciding if it’s safe to ford the stream.) This is also where adventurers will find the trail head for the 13-mile Powerline Trai l, which ends near Princeville, and the extremely rugged, unpaved Wailua Forestry Management Road, the start of much more challenging treks to the Jurassic Park gates (just poles now) and the “Blue Hole” inside Waialeale.
