‘Khendreek!’ — Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Big Steppers’ Tour Mesmerizes Paris: Concert Review

Amazon music concert review

The Parisian crowd is chanting but it’s not immediately clear to American ears what they’re saying. It gets louder as the object of their adulation stands on the stage and calmly soaks it in. Then it snaps into focus: “Khendreek! Khendreek! Khendreek!”

People had been saying all day before Kendrick Lamar ’s second sold-out show at Paris’ Accor Arena on Saturday that the crowd’s reaction on the previous night made his summer concerts in Brooklyn , Las Vegas and even the four-night, North American tour-closing stand in his hometown of Los Angeles seem tame. We’ll see, we thought — but damned if they weren’t right.

And although this night marked the 10th anniversary of the release of his generation-defining breakthrough album, “Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City,” he didn’t make a big deal out of it — just a quick “Don’t think we forgot… Paris, can we take it back to day one?” marking the occasion before he launched into “Money Trees.”

Witnessing the “The Big Steppers” tour more than once or up close reveals just how intricately planned and subtle a performance it is. Unlike virtually every other rapper (with some top-shelf exceptions like Drake, Jay and Em), Lamar is a master of low-key intensity. He doesn’t jump, he rarely raises his voice, and he doesn’t dance conventionally. But a closer look reveals that the deeply disciplined control and complexity of his lyrics is fully equaled in his performance, from his moves to the lighting and effects. Even the merch is subtle: The fastest-selling items at the table in our section were the monogrammed “Big Stepper” socks (get it?).

Anyone who’s tried to rap along with Lamar knows that his songs are masterpieces of physical as well as verbal endurance: breath control, tongue-twisting, sudden changes of rhythm, syncopation and tone. And what is even more remarkable on the “Big Steppers” tour — which is a far more elaborate performance than his previous ones — is that now he’s leading and interacting with a troupe of dancers as well. He doesn’t engage in fancy footwork; instead, he steps, and his intensity and intricacy is nearly all from the waist up: subtle hand motions, quickly turning his head, bobbing rhythmically, those trademark windmilling arm movements and rolls. And when his silhouette is projected on the screens at the back of the stage, it’s not live: He’s moving along, nearly flawlessly, with a previously filmed silhouette of himself with images of arrows in his back or flocks of birds around him.

All of which isn’t to say he’s just standing there: Every intricate step is carefully planned and he nails his marks, at times leading the dancers in perfect step while delivering those feats of verbal endurance; during one song he’s moving and rapping as a female dancer holds and follows him, gently pressed against his back. It’s like watching the engine of a fine-tuned Mercedes — and he does it for two solid hours, tearing through nearly 30 songs with no breaks except for the occasional dramatic pause or brief video interlude.

This date included a handful of relatively minor changes from the North American tour: There were a couple of additional verses here and there; and some new video elements, mostly notably some of the deepfakes from “The Heart Pt. 5″ video and a silhouetted interpretation of “We Cry Together,” which was one of the evening’s stranger moments: Only the harrowing song’s “Fuck you b—h / Fuck you n—a” was performed, and then he went straight into “Purple Hearts,” asking the crowd cheerfully “How y’all feeling?” and saying how great it was to be back after five years. He then led them into a singalong on the “Yeah, baby” lyric while the silhouettes continued arguing silently behind him, before finally embracing at the end of the song. (To be fair, the show is so tightly organized that there isn’t much room for spontaneity or major setlist changes.)

The pacing felt slightly different as well. Unlike the deeply challenging “Mr. Morale” album, which basically makes the listener put in the work whether they want to or not, he intersperses the new songs with bangers for the first two-thirds of the show. But the final eight or nine songs are uphill — even an energetic, pyro-filled tag team with Baby Keem on “Range Brothers” and “Family Ties” and Tanna Leone on “Mr. Morale” lacked the infectious vibes of classics like “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe,” “Humble.,” “Swimming Pools (Drank),” “Alright” and even the new “N95” that were aired earlier in the set.

The show ends abruptly after Lamar finishes “Savior”: The dancers bolt offstage and he quickly thanks the audience as the platform on which he’s standing sinks beneath the stage, and boom — the house lights come up and it’s over.

“The Big Steppers Tour” is almost the obverse of the ordinary, tried-and-true concert tradition, where the hits are saved for encores or at least the end of the set. But Kendrick Lamar is far from ordinary, and it seems the show is designed to acknowledge his past and please the crowd early — but concludes by signaling that this is where he is now, he knows exactly what wants, and if certain aspects don’t meet the expectations that some fans brought with them, well, you can’t please everybody.

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar live in Paris: a dramatic display from a true great

Accor Arena, Oct 22: The Big Steppers Tour hits Paris for the 10th anniversary of 'good kid, m.A.A.d city'

Compton rap titan Kendrick Lamar moves in subtle, robotic motions, shifting slowly between careful, curved poses. As he fires restlessly through ‘Worldwide Steppers’, his silhouetted frame reflects off the huge onstage projectors in Paris’ Accor Arena, broadcasting to 20,000 captivated fans in what looks like a live stage recording. In fact, this feed is pre-recorded, and Lamar’s actions onstage are intricately choreographed and rehearsed to mimic it. His Paris show is packed with signs of his intense commitment to crafting artwork, but arguably, this is the most powerful of all.

After a host of North American and European dates, the international ‘Big Steppers’ tour arrives in Paris on something of a milestone: the 10th anniversary of Lamar’s breakout album ‘good kid, m.A.A.d city’ . Documenting the complex everyday realities of growing up in Compton, a city defined through popular culture by violence, his second record kickstarted Lamar’s phenomenal rise. A decade later, he’s one of the world’s most innovative rappers, a position only cemented in May with the release of his deeply confessional fifth studio album, ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’ ; earlier this summer, he premiered a version of this live show during his Glastonbury headline set . To mark the coalescence of these milestone events, tonight’s show is live-streamed to the world by Amazon Music ; the footage is planned meticulously in advance, with each shot choreographed precisely, the sense of occasion clearly not lost on Lamar and his team.

Blending the moody introspection of ‘Mr. Morale’ with the clean punchiness of ‘good kid…’ is no easy task, but it is accomplished expertly. The show opens cinematically, as the dark, powerful strings of ‘Savior – Interlude’ soundtrack the mechanical struts of eleven dancers from the tip of the catwalk to the stage. From the ensuing darkness, Lamar emerges sitting at a piano, accompanied by a ventriloquist doll of himself. The pair burn fiercely through the opening tracks of ‘Mr. Morale’, ‘United in Grief’ and the bassy, high-energy ‘N95’. He swaggers through ‘Backseat Freestyle’, the first of many ‘good kid…’ tracks scattered cleverly across the set.

The album’s resonance with fans isn’t lost on Lamar’s team, who augment each classic with stunningly dramatic visuals. Onstage, the deep glow of a slowly rising sun helps introduce the glorious, cathartic anthem ‘Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe’. During ‘m.A.A.d city’, the LA rapper is circled by a whirl of spinning, torch-carrying dancers. Inventive choreography and visual effects take the show to new heights, without detracting from the musical focus, as sound and vision intertwine fluidly to create a genuinely staggering spectacle.

Lamar performs for almost two hours, barely pausing, and rarely speaking; half an hour passes before he introduces himself, and even then it’s simply as the charismatic frontman of the Big Steppers: “I am Mr. Morale” . The thing is, it’s such a deeply affecting performance that spoken words aren’t needed. His hits are spiced up by distinctly ‘Big Steppers’-influenced touches, like the dissonant piano stabs of ‘Rich – Interlude’, used to introduce the thumping beat and G-funk synths of ‘HUMBLE.’ He teases the audience with snippets and fragments of tracks throughout the performance, launching into opening verses and choruses before cutting things brutally and introducing new motifs. As such, he squeezes in almost 30 songs – including three with support act, close collaborator and family member Baby Keem – without compromising the show’s cohesive feel or giving any impression that he’s just trying to reel off as many hits as possible; it’s a carefully selected snapshot of his incredibly diverse back catalogue.

One downside to the Steppers’ ascent is the marginal role played by ‘To Pimp A Butterly’ in the Accor Arena show. All we get from the dazzling, jazz fusion-tinged 2015 album that cemented Lamar’s status as one of the world’s most innovative rappers is the majestic crowd-pleaser ‘King Kunta’ and the soulful, gratifying ‘Alright’. The latter is one of the night’s most memorable performances: channelling his inner David Blaine, Lamar becomes trapped in a transparent plastic box that descends from the sky. Reflecting Lamar’s experience of catching COVID, the moment is contextualised by one of several recordings of Helen Mirren’s wise words (yes, really) as she states “Mr. Morale, you’ve been contaminated.” Elaborate scenes like this emphasise the fact that Lamar’s intense dedication to his craft extends far beyond his complex, deeply textured studio work.

In the show’s final moment, we get a rare glimpse into the playful personality behind this colossus of artistry and innovation, as Lamar disappears through a trapdoor into the stage, turns to stage left, and offers a cheeky grin. There’s a human touch here that can sometimes be lost in the midst of creative genius. ‘Mr. Morale’ insisted on showing the rapper’s flaws and deconstructing the god complex that surrounds him, although ironically, the album’s tour presents a creative vision that would boggle the minds of most mere mortals. It’s a stunning, moving display from a true great of modern rap.

Concert, choreo-poem, redemption: Kendrick Lamar lifts up Austin on Big Steppers Tour

big steppers tour live band

As the lights dimmed at 8:59 p.m. on Thursday, a roar ripped through the capacity crowd at the Moody Center. The thunderous outcry morphed into a chant – “Kendrick, Kendrick, Kendrick.” Thousands of fans with skin tones of every hue, from fresh faced tweens to grown and sexy elders, raised their voices in unison to welcome the hitmaker, rap scholar, street preacher and bona fide musical genius to the stage for the second date of the Big Steppers Tour, Lamar’s first North American solo outing since 2018.

Moments later, we received the invocation: “I hope you find some peace of mind in this lifetime.” Obscured from view in a stage left orchestra pit, a live band played the opening bars from “United in Grief,” the lead track on Lamar’s 2022 release, “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers.” As they unwound the intro, an 11-piece dance team clad in black and white suits moved in a slow procession across the stage. Then the men exited. Four women in white arranged themselves on a bed as Lamar appeared at a piano near the back of the stage.

The set for the concert was laid out in three platforms connected by catwalks that spanned the length of the arena floor. As the song segued into its furious second movement, Lamar sank into the floor, then suddenly appeared on the center platform spitting soul searching bars while mirroring his flow with a ventriloquist’s dummy fashioned as a mini Kendrick. Rhyming at a frenetic pace and upping the ante on himself every few bars, Lamar whipped up a tsunami of emotion so deep that when he released his flow into the refrain, “I grieve different,” people shouted along. As the song ended, he sank into the stage and the crowd went wild.

A disembodied voice introduced herself as our guide and promised to shake us out of our comfort zones. With pyrotechnics at his back, jewel-encrusted sunglasses on his face and a sparkling glove on his left hand, Lamar led the crowd through an explosive version of “N95.”

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Over the next 90 minutes, one of the most powerful rappers of his generation delivered a stunning performance, notable for its theatricality. While he omitted a few songs, including the controversial “Auntie Diaries,” the setlist covered most of the new album. He also played a wide range of tracks from his Pulitzer Prize-winning album “DAMN,” the brilliant nu-jazz treatise “To Pimp a Butterfly” and his breakout collection “good kid, m.A.A.D. city.”

It was both a concert and a choreo-poem. Throughout the show, his dance team flanked him in militaristic formations, graceful sweeps and artistic tableaus.

It was a redemption play. When he took off his glasses and rhymed “I pray to God you actually pray when somebody dies” on “Rich Spirit,” it was a clear appeal to a higher power. When he sang “I hope I'm not too late to set my demons straight” on “Die Hard,” the aching sincerity was palpable.

It was a turn up. He prowled the catwalk and let the crowd carry the first couple verses of the 2012 breakthrough banger “Backseat Freestyle,” before jumping in to take the song home hard. A ballistic version of “m.A.A.D. city” ended with Lamar surrounded by dancers closing in on him, their sharp moves engulfing him in a barrage of high beams from handheld lights.

It was an act of love. “LOVE” soared with profound emotion, and the deep catharsis of thousands of people raising their voices to shout “We Gon’ Be Alright” felt as essential in 2022 as it has ever been.

Overall, it was a fully realized production that wove the strands of his storied career together in a cohesive statement.Around the hour mark, as Lamar rounded the corner on the show’s final movement, opener Baby Keem marched onto the stage with a cadre of dancers in hazmat suits. A clear plastic tent dropped from the ceiling, surrounding the group, and one of the dancers administered a nasal swab to Lamar. While Lamar and Keem performed “Family Ties” separated from the audience by the plastic film, on the far platform, plumes of flames exploded on the other end of the stage.

After Keem exited, leaving Kendrick alone to perform “Mirrors,” the cube took flight as a raised platform lifted it high into the air. Surrounded by an amber haze as he hovered above the audience, he performed a heartfelt version of “LOYALTY.”

Back on the ground, he took it home with a trio of tracks from the new album. Under oppressive red lights, dancers whipped their bodies in a series of freeze frames as opener Tanna Leone joined Lamar for a pyrotechnic-fueled rendition of “Mr. Morale.” Lamar was forceful and defiant on the ode to perseverance “Count Me Out.” He did not rock the $3 million, bejeweled crown of thorns he wore at Glastonbury for the set closer “Savior.” Instead, he traded the shock value of the illusion of blood for a quiet release into introspection.

T-shirts for the tour carry the song’s message “Not your savior.” And as he closed the show the way he began, sitting at the piano as he sank into the stage, it felt clear. Kendrick Lamar is not our savior, but with his wisdom, vulnerability and visionary power he left Austin lifted.

Kendrick Lamar live in Amsterdam: a portrait of the artist through time

After a half-decade hiatus, the rapper’s latest tour is a reminder of his undimmed storytelling skills. it’s one big step for mr. morale, one giant leap into the artist’s future.

By Vanessa Hsieh

big steppers tour live band

Be it headlining the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury , paying tribute to Virgil Abloh performing at Louis Vuitton , or at every step of The Big Steppers tour, Kendrick Lamar knows how to put on a show. From his early days, Lamar has always had a masterful command of delivering visceral vignettes through the alchemy of sound and vision, with intricate levels of world-building wordplay from his first mixtapes and freestyles, through to the sharp visuals that followed.

There’s “levels to it,” as he raps on “HUMBLE”, levels that are quite literally studied at university these days. And, like a teacher insisting a work should be consumed in the medium it was intended, Kendrick Lamar’s return as Mr. Morale on The Big Steppers tour makes the case for live performance as required reading. In tonight’s setlist, his latest album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers gets a new lease of life, a second chance for a record that broke rank with Lamar’s streak of “instant classic” records, dividing initial opinion in its denseness compared to previous releases.

It is precisely this stark simplicity that provides a powerful backdrop for Lamar’s latest, most introspective record to play out. The internal drama of what is essentially a therapy session (guided by Helen Mirren’s omnipresent voice) finds form in the clever application of age-old theatre tricks. That is: shadows of things that aren’t really there like the arrows in his back as he feels the weight of responsibility aimed at him (‘Count Me Out’), or to exaggerate the explosive exchange of barbs between Lamar and Taylour Paige (of A24’s Zola fame) on ‘We Cry Together’, and the chorus of voices in his head throughout appearing all the more ominous as anonymous spectral shadowy forms. Light has a chiaroscuro slant to it on this stage, equally beaming in moments of relief: for every James Turrell-like sunset they walk into at the end of ‘Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe’, there’s also an isolating and unnerving spotlight on Lamar’s ventriloquist mini-me, who opens the show while his full-sized warm-blooded counterpart runs through ‘United in Grief’ with his back turned to play the piano.

Though a seemingly bizarre prop, the focal ventriloquist is hardly out of place when you consider the many guises Lamar has adopted to tell his stories over the years. “Once again, I go by the name of K.Dot, Kendrick Lamar, oklama, Mr. Morale,” Lamar recaps during his performance. In his focus on self-reflection on the path to enlightenment, Lamar is faced with splintered voices which when heard together paint a cumulative portrait of the artist: where he’s been, where he is, and where he wants to be. At 35, Lamar is far from the braggadocious teen that gave us ‘Backseat Freestyle’, but he still has all the audacity and nerve of a young K.Dot invoking “Martin had a dream,” and “I pray my dick get big as the Eiffel Tower / So I can fuck the world for 72 hours,” on the same track.

big steppers tour live band

Funnily enough, this still isn’t as jarring as the casual, wildly incongruous name-checking of ‘Baby Shark’ in a rap song as he contemplates his inherited “daddy issues” and generational trauma since he became a father on hiatus. These parental anxieties unravel on ‘Father Time’, while an ensemble cast of dancers dramatise everything from frustration at two years of writer’s block, to an all-clear COVID test taken in a contamination cube raised above the crowd — the repeated refrain of ‘Alright’ a mantra to psych yourself out of that isolation-leaning pandemic mindset.

Though deeply personal to Kendrick Lamar’s development as a man and artist in the time since his last tour, the live performance of Mr Morale & The Big Steppers uses the power of tried-and-true stage tricks to communicate the commonality at the heart of what he’s really saying. Together, the audience chafes with him against rigid constraints visualised in the separation of the stage into boxed zones that are eventually rendered fluid in the process of his movements throughout the night, so that we all feel the relief of collapsing the walls we have built inside our heads to find freedom and catharsis.

It’s a therapeutic overview of the timeline that has led us to this moment. With every interspersed reminder of Kendrick Lamar the artist past, present, and with eyes firmly on the future (building his legacy with creative agency pgLang, the strong “Family Ties” with his cousin, collaborator and occasional mirror Baby Keem), The Big Steppers tour offers fresh insight into the album as a document of this mercurial time for change.

Why some major artists are suddenly canceling shows, and in some cases entire tours

Bad Bunny performs on stage

A series of tour cancellations and changes by big-name artists has sparked questions about whether the post-pandemic live music boom could be cooling, as consumer spending fatigue meets elevated ticket prices.

On Friday, Jennifer Lopez announced she was canceling her 2024 tour , citing a desire to spend more time with her family. Meanwhile, the Black Keys announced they were abandoning a stadium tour in favor of a series of shows at smaller venues.

Both tours had recently become the subject of social media fodder, namely screenshots showing empty venues at select tour dates. (NBC News could could not directly verify their authenticity.)

Indeed, some of the evidence of a slowdown is anecdotal. SeatGeek said in an email that the average resale ticket price to attend a summer concert is down to $213 from $257 around this time last year. The company suggested some of the decline could be attributed to the absence of megatours on par with Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” and Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” outings last year.

For artists whose popularity has crescendoed, there appears to be plenty of demand — and high prices. The average resale price for Olivia Rodrigo’s “Guts” tour is $571, and the next-highest is $409 to see Morgan Wallen, according to SeatGeek data first reported by Axios .

Many of those tours are being sold through Ticketmaster and its parent Live Nation. And prior to facing landmark accusations that it is a monopoly , a claim it denies, Live Nation reported its biggest first quarter ever, with $3.8 billion in revenues. Its concerts business alone was up 26% to $2.9 billion, while “estimated fans” globally were up more than 20%, and up 42% in North America.

Yet official government data points to the makings of a return to a more normal pace for live music event sales after a post-pandemic boom. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last month that movie and concert admissions prices climbed just 3.4% year over year through April, the lowest reading since 2021 and the second-consecutive month showing a slowdown.

Dave Clark, editor of Ticket News, which tracks the live entertainment industry, said the period of explosive live music growth following pandemic reopenings may in hindsight be seen as an aberration: People were simply more eager — and more financially able — to go to as many shows as they could after months cooped up indoors.

This year, Clark said, a reckoning may be emerging.

“The days where there was enough demand to sell out arenas at top dollar just isn’t there in this live events economy — outside of people like Taylor Swift who can sell whatever they want wherever they want,” he said.

At a time when many consumers are struggling to pay for basic necessities, he said, “people are seeing some of the prices they’re asking and just saying, ‘Hard pass.’”

Another factor may be a supply issue, Clark added: too many acts trying to tour at once, or too many times. In the pre-streaming era, bands would go on tour as a way of marketing an album. These days, he said, it’s reversed, since the returns on recorded music have shrunk dramatically.

“Now they’re making records to sell the tour,” he said. “That paradigm has a lot to do with it. It’s just a very overloaded market.”

The Black Keys did just release a new album, and its debut single hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart in March.

Still, the rock duo announced it would cancel and reschedule its summer touring plans, switching from arenas to other venues that provide a more “intimate experience,” according to the band. The new dates have not yet been announced.

The Black Keys aren’t the only group that may be falling victim to costly concert fatigue.

Pop-rock band 311 announced it had canceled upcoming European tour dates due to the “rising costs of touring overseas,” which made completing certain portions of the tour “unfeasible.”

Other stars including Pink and Justin Timberlake have also recently canceled specific show dates, while the Jonas Brothers recently postponed their upcoming European tour , though none officially cited financial concerns as reasons for doing so.

“I think with all that competition for fan dollars, it was obviously natural that some artists were going to lose,” said Bill Werde, director of the Syracuse University Bandier Program for Recording and Entertainment Industries.

There are still plenty of large-scale tours planned for this summer that, so far, appear to be unaffected by flagging demand. Hootie & the Blowfish have 48 dates booked this year, while Dave Matthews Band is slated for 34. Other top acts hitting the road include Maroon 5, Zac Brown Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kenny Chesney and Chris Stapleton.

But experts say recent economic trends in the live-music industry, especially the type of consolidation the Justice Department is now targeting, have translated into fewer smaller-sized venues.

That’s made it more difficult for a given tour date to make financial sense for the artist, venue and promoter.

“Some shows, they can’t afford to drop prices; they can’t afford to wait to try to sell out the rest of the building,” Clark said.

If there is uncertainty about all stakeholders being able to at least break even, he said, the show might get canceled.

Such realities have collided with a more circumspect concertgoer. Brittney D’Mello, a 23-year-old K-pop fan from New Jersey who works in corporate marketing, posted to X about her frustrations with the current touring landscape.

“The tickets are too expensive,” D’Mello said. “There’s only a SMALL amount of people (10%) that will spend $500+ on vip/floor/premium,” she said. “The rest of us have budgets and won’t spend $100 on nosebleeds,” she said, referring to seats that are typically the farthest away from the stage.

“Everyone is touring this year … and we only have money for 2-3 concerts MAX,” she added.

In a follow-up interview with NBC News, D’Mello said she simply decided to cap her concert budget.

“I will only go see two artists that are my tried-and-true favorite artists,” she said. “But I won’t be casually going to concerts anymore. And after going to concerts twice, I think that’s where I stop.”

If you’ve never seen a tribute act perform the songs of artists that are either too big to play in Maine or who have passed away, there’s a way to do a whole bunch of that this week in Portland.

There are also tribute shows happening in venues around the state all summer long.

A Strange Day is the Portland-based tribute to The Cure. Photo by Seth D. Warner

Let’s start with Portland-based A Strange Day, a tribute to British alternative act The Cure, fronted by singer and guitarist Seth Warner.

The band will perform The Cure’s second album, “Seventeen Seconds,” in its entirety, along with some hits and other cuts at Portland House of Music on Thursday.

The album was released on April 18, 1980. Lead singer and guitarist Robert Smith turned 21 three days later. The single  “A Forest” marked the band’s debut on the U.K. Singles Chart, where it reached the No. 31 spot. The song remains a setlist staple at The Cure’s live performances.

Warner said he put himself in the shoes of Cure fans when deciding what album to cover. “What I would like to hear from a Cure band is a dive into the specific eras that surrounded each record, and ‘Seventeen Seconds’ set the tone for the more introspective and gloomy textures and themes.” Advertisement

As for Warner’s favorite “Seventeen Seconds” tracks, he said, “I really like ‘At Night’ for its dynamic potential, and the edgy and angsty ‘M.'”

The band took its name from the track “A Strange Day” from The Cure’s 1982 album “Pornography.”

Along with Warner, the band is Pete Dugas (keys), Andrew Hodgkins (drums), Matt Kennedy (synth/sax), Kevin O’Reilly (bass), Casey Urich (trumpet) and Corey Urich.

Angel Butts, a copy editor living in Westbrook, has seen The Cure more than 100 times on three continents and at least 10 countries, including Latvia and Colombia. “They’re like breathing to me. They have this massive catalog and it spans every possible mood, I don’t know of another band with a palette like that. “Seventeen Seconds” is among her favorite of the band’s 13 studio albums.

Butts has seen The Cure play the “Seventeen Seconds” album all the way through three times. “One of those shows stands as the best show I’ve ever seen in my life. The Cure: Reflections, Nov. 27, 2011 at the  Beacon Theatre in New York City.”

Butts said she and her 13-year-old daughter will be attending the A Strange Day show. “I think she’s more excited than I am.” Advertisement

A Strange Day  8:30 p.m. Thursday. Portland House of Music, 25 Temple St., Portland, $12 in advance, $15 day of show, 21-plus. portlandhouseofmusic.com

Another British act that will likely never perform in Maine is The Rolling Stones. With more than 30 albums, the band achieved legendary status decades ago. Singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, and the band is currently on tour and will be at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, on Thursday.

There are still tickets left for that show, but you can save yourself hours of traffic jams and a lot of more by instead heading to Aura on Saturday to see Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones tribute show. Or maybe you’ll see the real deal and then keep the party going here in Maine.

Satisfaction has been slinging Stones hits for over two decades and has played more than 4,000 shows. Chris LeGrand’s take on Mick Jagger is pretty convincing, and he and the band will surely be pleased to meet you.

Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones Tribute Show 9 p.m. Saturday. Aura, 121 Center St., Portland, $15, $25.50, 18-plus. auramaine.com

David Bowie and Prince died within five months of each other in 2016, at the ages of 69 and 57, respectively, and their losses were felt by millions of fans around the world. Advertisement

With contributions that are impossible to quantify, both artists left behind a legacy of music that lives on through radio play, home listening and tribute shows.

Boston-based musician Eric Gould loves both artists and is the bandleader of a Prince/Bowie tribute coming to Portland on Saturday. The band is a revolving lineup of players from all over the country.

Gould plays bass and designs the setlists. For this show, the musicians are Cal Kehoe (guitar, vocals), Adrian Tramontano (drums), Sammi Garrett (percussion, vocals), Josh Schwartz (baritone sax, vocals), Rob Somerville (tenor saxophone), Rob Volo (trombone) and Kiran Edwards (keys).

Gould said that, to him, Prince embodies soul, creative arrangement and precision. “His music has the best energy and makes you feel on top of the universe.”

He described Bowie as having a voice and character that is completely unique.

“It is powerful and epic and decadent,” said Gould, who has made a career out of finding unique connections through the songbooks of artists. “It is such a treat to present music people know and love in a way that is fresh to the ears. This combination brings so much joy to everyone on and off stage.” Advertisement
