2020 Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager

Kawasaki’s most expensive touring-ready cruiser.

kawasaki voyager 1700 top speed

A roamer, a city-hopper, and—you guessed it—a voyager. The Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager takes the comforts of the cruise and pairs it with a long-stroke 1,700cc V-twin with peak torque low in the rev range—that’s a claimed 108.0 pound-feet at 2,750 rpm. Its touring comforts include cruise control, integrated luggage (claimed two-helmet capacity) with passenger backrest, and a frame-mounted touring fairing. The Vulcan 1700 Voyager is Team Green’s take on cruising.

what is some of the top speeds of a 2009 1700 nomad? i read 95 mph. i thought it would be more than that.

kawasaki voyager 1700 top speed

I have the same engine in my VV. I have more wind resistance than the Nomad and I can top out at 115.

kawasaki voyager 1700 top speed

Where do you live that going faster than 80 MPH is required? If you are concerned about speed you might want a Ninja ZX14 instead of a cruiser.

I just read on vroc where a guy took a picture of his speedometer doing a 100mph while he turned over a 100,000miles.I don.t drive that fast but after doing air mod and testing my 1500 as I was going about 70 and rolled the throttle and it jumped to 90 in a second or two and was still pulling real hard before I let off.I would say it would do better than 95 if you don't mind riding that fast.

speed thanx for the info

Top speed I have a classic and I have gotten it up to 140 going down the hill to Vegas.

kawasaki voyager 1700 top speed

Theres so much figgin wind and noise at 100 ive only gone there once on this bike

Passenger pegs and a heavy sport bike lean...

kawasaki voyager 1700 top speed

I'm not a speed freak, by any means....but while testing the VV after some performance mods, I easily got it up to 110 before backing down. She still had more speed in her.

kawasaki voyager 1700 top speed

Damn! I'm scared to go that fast in my cage!

kawasaki voyager 1700 top speed

I've had my 2010 1700 Nomad up to 107 - 108 mph. It was hard to tell exactly where the needle was. I believe there was a bit more to go but I ran out of road where I was. The bike at the time was all stock.

Like others have said, that's more of a sport-bike question... Cruiser guys tend not to think of "top speed" but of "cruising speed." That being said, 95 mph would probably be a manageable cruising speed for the 1700, so top speed must be up around 120 mph. But speaking for myself, I wouldn't go that fast on any bike, regardless of its capabilities. _____________ IntheWind '06 1500 Classic

184 km/hr gps confirmed.

kawasaki voyager 1700 top speed

Which is 114 mph, to save everyone the conversion.

kawasaki voyager 1700 top speed

The tops that I have been on my Vaquero is 112 mph and she still had some to go, but decided that was fast enough for then and there and a cop maybe down the road just waiting for me and at those speeds, it is mandatory "take you to jail" here in Texas. I also have been up to 102 mph once, with my Lady on-board, and was surprised the Vaquero got to that speed quickly with two up, but she is only 115 lbs, was passing a RV on a long straight away.

the reason I bought a big cruiser is I like the feelin from riding at 45-60mph with the big engine rumbling onlong at low revs...so top end speed is a little irrelivent....plus they throw you in jail here fr dumber things than speeding

I’ve only had my Nomad to about 95mph. It is not good in high winds. I’ve had my V2K to 105mph, and although the rpm's were high, there was plenty of power to go faster. I’ve had my Hayabusa to 165mph and it could have raced easily to the governed speed of 186. For the most part, I just cruise at posted speeds and enjoy the ride...

kawasaki voyager 1700 top speed

I have always set the cruise as high as it would go on my Venture I just traded in for my 11 VV. Will do the same with the VV. I live 200 miles from the next anything, so we tend to drive fast out here. You also carry gas with you is you go east from here. Next gas going south is 100 miles, west (which is also north... figure that one out) about 100 miles, east 187 or 192 depending which turn you take 60 miles east of here. Bubba in NV USAF Retired Nye Co. Motor Officer Retired

OK a litttle off topic. I have a 2010 nomad.........Saw the thread about not being good in wind. Same with mine. Get to 75-80 and it feels squirley in front end. I have 6K miles with original stones. I plan on going to E-3 ASAP. Is this the problem or is it something inherent in bike? Any thoughts appreciated.

I suspect my 09 Nomad carries much of it's weight a bit high, plus when the wind is gusty, it slaps the lowers in a choppy manner making the bars get a little wiggly. my V2K does not do this. It sits a bit lower and at 90MPH is solid with no unwanted characteristics. however the Nomad is a very good combination of a cruiser/tourer/intown/outoftown/twoup versatile motorcycle that can suit most anyones big vtwin needs...

cqt1414 that makes good sense. I wonder is larger lowers would stabilize the situation?

kawasaki voyager 1700 top speed

vaquero seat on Nomad? Been to 105mph two up.But, I am curious. Pete what does a Nomad look like with the Vaquero seat and fender tips. Did you post any Pics?

kawasaki voyager 1700 top speed

I have a 2009 Vulcan classic 1700 with a batwing fairing k&n airfilter cobra pipes an cobra tuner an I ride fast all the time that might piss some of you off but I’ve been on 2 wheels since I was 3 an have alway rode full throttle an I can not get this Vulcan to go over 115 even down hill an that pisses me off I honestly thought for a 1700 I would have a little more crap an get off the start an more speed at the top end

Electronic cruise control.

Electronic Cruise Control allows a desired speed (engine rpm) to be maintained with the simple press of a button. Once activated, the rider does not have to constantly apply the throttle. This reduces stress on the right hand when traveling long distances, enabling relaxed cruising and contributing to a high level of riding comfort.

Electronic Throttle Valves

Kawasaki’s fully electronic throttle actuation system enables the ECU to control the volume of both the fuel (via fuel injectors) and the air (via throttle valves) delivered to the engine. Ideal fuel injection and throttle valve position results in smooth, natural engine response and the ideal engine output. The system also makes a significant contribution to reduced emissions.

Electronic throttle valves also enable more precise control of electronic engine management systems like S-KTRC and KTRC, and allow the implementation of electronic systems like KLCM, Kawasaki Engine Brake Control, and Electronic Cruise Control.

K-ACT (Kawasaki Advanced Coactive-braking Technology) ABS

At its heart, K-ACT ABS is an advanced anti-lock braking system, designed to keep tires from locking up during braking. But K-ACT ABS was designed to be used on touring models weighing in excess of 300 kg (661 lb) – and that is before adding a passenger and luggage.

Complementing its standard ABS function, K-ACT ABS links the front and rear brakes. It monitors the brake force the rider is exerting at both the front and rear, and takes into consideration vehicle speed to ensure highly effective braking while maintaining chassis stability.

For example, let’s say the rider pulls on the front brake lever. To keep the bike from pitching forward, the ABS ECU actuates the rear brake (via fluid pumps) to ensure that front-rear balance is maintained. Should the rider push the rear brake pedal, the system actuates the front brake as well to distribute the load more evenly so that the rear wheel does not lock up. Based on the vehicle speed, K-ACT decides the optimum hydraulic pressure to send to each caliper, ensuring that even with a heavy motorcycle, stable braking performance is possible.

Might have to rethink some things. This is a beautiful bike,

I agree this is a beautiful bike, I just purchased one. Excellent price point for a touring beast. Title lists hp rating in USA as 82.5, Torque is higher too. I am so thrilled with it I had mine glass coated to protect the sheen.

purchased one 8-28-2020 200 miles exhaust leak and low brake fluid Great so far wife loves it

Roger, you’ve had an exhaust leak and issue tied to low brake fluid after 200 miles of riding?

KAWASAKI ANNOUNCES FALL RELEASE OF 2024 STREET MOTORCYCLES

These 2024 model-year motorcycles are set to arrive in Kawasaki dealerships during the fall months so that riders can continue to “Let the Good Times Roll.”

2024 Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager ABS Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

ENGINE V-Twin Engine • Long stroke, liquid-cooled, SOHC engine designed to deliver high levels of torque. • Liquid-cooled A/C generator reduces the temperature of generator stator coils and thus increases output to handle additional accessories. • Semi-dry sump design reduces overall engine height and keeps excess oil away from the crank to prevent power-robbing stirring loss. Oil is stored in the transmission, which eliminates the need for an oil tank. Triple oil pumps (2 scavenge and 1 feed pump) help reduce stirring loss and provide superb oil circulation. • Water jackets surround only the top quarter of the cylinders and the polished-edge fins match the cylinder heads while attractively tapering to the cylinder bases. • High-performance forged pistons are lightweight, stronger and more heat resistant than cast versions. Oil jets help cool the pistons for added durability. • Dual primary engine balancers and rubber engine mounts help isolate high-frequency vibration while providing the rider with the core power-pulse feeling of the muscular engine. • Single-pin crankshaft for that classic V-twin rumble and characteristic pulse. • A cam damper mounted to the end of the crankshaft protects the drive train by damping large torque fluctuations yet helps emphasize the pleasant torque pulse.

Digital Fuel Injection • Dual 42mm throttle bodies with Atomizing Fuel Injectors produce a fine fuel mist for better combustion and fuel consumption.

Electronic Throttle Valve (ETV) • The throttle pulley operates an acceleration position sensor (APS) that uses the ECU to send a signal to a small motor that actually operates the throttle valves. This makes throttle pull very light for reduced rider fatigue and the more precise throttle control results in better performance, smoother running and increased fuel mileage. • Using a cable-operated APS eliminates expensive switch housing electronics that can be damaged and costly to replace should the motorcycle get tipped on its right side.

Electronic Cruise Control • Works in conjunction with the ETV to automatically maintain a set speed when in third gear or higher and when traveling between 30 and 85 mph. • Convenient controls located within easy thumb reach on the right handlebar.

Kawasaki Air Management System (KAMS) • Kawasaki Air Management System (KAMS) helps increase rider comfort at a stop. All V-twins present engine heat challenges, especially full dress models with leg shields, since the rear cylinder and exhaust pipe is almost directly under the rider and the rider’s legs. The front shield routes radiator heat down to the ground below the engine, while the rear fan draws air away from the rear cylinder and exhaust pipe and directs it to the ground on the left side of the motorcycle. • Kawasaki is the first manufacturer to provide, as standard equipment, an effectively designed air management system to help provide a noticeably cooler rider cockpit. This system is particularly effective in warm weather while stopped in traffic, or for extended periods of low speed operation such as during staging for group rides.

6-Speed Transmission • Overdrive 6th gear helps reduce rpm at higher speeds and helps increase fuel mileage. • Gear position sensor communicates with the ECU to help reduce fuel consumption and adjust timing to provide better power feeling, and an indicator on the speedometer allows the rider to monitor current gear position at a glance.

Belt Drive • Lower unsprung weight than shaft drive to improve ride quality and suspension action. • Carbon fiber belt provides much more strength than Kevlar while allowing the belt to be narrower. • More efficient so more power reaches the rear wheel. • Low maintenance and low noise.

CHASSIS • Large steel box-section backbone frame is very rigid and helps contribute to high stability and lightweight handling at low speeds. • Low profile reduces seat height for an easier reach to the ground.

Dual Air-Assisted Rear Shocks • Air shocks provide a wide range of adjustment to match the load or riding preference. • Special spring rates to match the increased weight of the saddlebags.

Triple Disc Brakes • Dual 300mm front discs and a single 300mm rear disc stop with authority. • For maximum controllability in tight corners or when making U-turns, K-ACT does not engage when braking is initiated at speeds below 12 mph. The ABS disengages at speeds below 4 mph.

Frame – Mounted Front Fairing • Large front fairing and windshield help block the wind for increased rider comfort. • The fairing is mounted to the frame to help maintain light steering. • Retro-style dashboard is located within the fairing with a 1960s-style speedometer and digital audio system display. • Leg shields on the front engine guards minimize wind on the rider’s legs. Adjustable air intakes allow the rider to control the amount of air reaching the legs for added touring comfort.

Kawasaki Advanced Coactive-braking Technology (K-ACT) • K-ACT (Kawasaki Advanced Coactive-braking Technology) ABS is a linked brake system that ensures ideal brake force distribution for confident, highly effective braking. • Electronic system controls brake force distribution between the front and rear brakes to enhance overall braking performance, no matter how hard the front and/ or rear brakes are applied. • Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) is incorporated into K-ACT to help prevent the wheels from locking during hard, straight-up braking for enhanced control.

Huge Saddlebags and Tail Trunk • Large trunk is big enough to hold two full-face helmets and provides a convenient backrest for the passenger. • LED tail/brake lights are located high on the trunk for better visibility to following motorists. • Locking saddlebags carry an amazing amount of longdistance gear. • Sturdy saddlebag and trunk locks keep gear secure. • Large frame-mounted chrome saddlebag guards emphasize cruiser image.

Passenger Footboards • For maximum comfort on long rides.

AUDIO SYSTEM Full Feature Audio System • Navigation audio prompt capability allows voice prompting audio to be heard through the speakers (or Kawasaki Genuine Accessory Helmet Headsets) when using Garmin Zumo 600/665 GPS. (Kawasaki Genuine Accessory GPS mount, adapter kit and GPS sold separately.) • AM/FM tuner with front fairing-mounted speakers is standard equipment. • Easy-to-use audio controls are located within easy thumb reach on the left handlebar. • Standard audio system is equipped to easily expand with optional XM™ tuner, CB radio, audio adapter kit that works with any device that has a 3.5mm headphone jack, and rear speakers accessories.

Classic Styling • LED taillight provides excellent visibility when activated, and makes a strong visual statement with chrome surround. • Tank, seat, fenders, saddlebags and details designed with a classic 1960‘s feel. • Adjustable front brake and clutch levers enhance rider comfort and styling.

Electric Speedometer • Electric design reduces weight and eliminates the front wheel drive unit and cable for a cleaner look. • Analog speedometer face evokes memories of the ‘60s. • Digital displays include odometer, trip meter, clock, fuel range and average mpg. • Gear position indicator makes it easy to determine which gear the transmission is in at a glance.

36-Month Warranty • Vulcan 1700 Voyager models feature a 36-month factory warranty.

10 Japanese Cruiser Bikes To Ride Instead Of A Harley-Davidson

  • Suzuki VS1400 Intruder: With a 1,360cc V-Twin engine, the Intruder is a powerful and affordable alternative to Harley-Davidson cruisers.
  • Suzuki Boulevard C90T: This Suzuki cruiser offers a 1,462cc engine and a comfortable ride, rivaling Harley-Davidson touring bikes at a lower price.
  • Yamaha Star Venture: Boasting a reliable 1,854cc V-Twin engine and stylish design, the Star Venture is a strong competitor to Harley-Davidson touring motorcycles.

No other name in the world is as synonymous with cruiser motorcycles as Harley-Davidson . One hundred twenty years old now, the American motorcycle manufacturer is a household name wherever you go, thanks to how powerful, stylish, and iconic their motorcycles are. Hardcore American bikers refuse to ride anything but a Harley, and they sure have their reasons. In fact, many motorcycle clubs like the Hells Angels have a strict Harley-only policy, too .

UPDATE: 2023/11/01 10:58 EST BY SAMARVEER SINGH

Over the years, Japanese motorcycles have been on the rise thanks to their reliability. Cruiser motorcycles from Japan are no different, and there are more cruisers than ever on the market that could make you look away from that Harley-Davidson bike you've been thinking of bringing home. We have updated this article with more interesting brand-new and used cruisers from Japan that are giving Harley a run for its money and heritage.

However, that does not mean that the only good cruisers out there are Harleys. In fact, Harley-Davidson motorcycles have their fair share of problems that owners have to deal with, which is where Japanese cruiser motorcycles come in. Refined, powerful, and feature-loaded, there are plenty of cruiser motorcycles from the Land of the Rising Sun that give Harley-Davidson a run for its money. Without further ado, here are 10 Japanese cruiser motorcycles that can prove to be better deals than a Harley-Davidson in pricing, performance, refinement, and, in some cases, even looks.

All technical details and MSRP figures of the Japanese cruisers mentioned in this list are taken from the official websites and pressrooms of the respective motorcycle manufacturers. Used bike price figures are taken from CycleTrader and AutoTrader.

Suzuki VS1400 Intruder

Used price range: $2,000 - $5,000.

It's no surprise that Suzuki is featured heavily on this list. Honestly, if we wanted to, we could probably get away with featuring a different Japanese cruiser bike from Suzuki in every single entry on this list, and we would be perfectly justified in doing so.

A sound argument can be made for Suzuki producing the best Japanese cruiser bikes on the market. One way to make that argument is to show them the beauty that is the VS1400 Intruder. It isn't an overstatement to call the 1400cc behemoth of an engine that powers the VS1400 one of the best engines for riding.

The Suzuki VS1400 Intruder is a good alternative to the Harley-Davidson Super Glide, Dyna Glide, or Electra Wide motorcycles on the used market because you sure could get a 1,300+ cc Harley motorcycle for the same price. But none of them would be from this side of the century.

Suzuki boulevard c90t, used price range: $6,000 - $9,000.

Singing some more praise to another bike in the line of Suzuki's bikes, we have to set some time aside for the Suzuki C90T, which is one of the finest Japanese cruiser bikes out there today and one of Suzuki's best motorcycles to ever come off the line .

It has everything that readers should expect from Suzuki bikes by now - like a 90 cubic inch V-twin engine with a clean shaft drive and five-speed transmission - along with a large windscreen built to accommodate a comfy, leathery passenger seat. It is a classic makeshift that is kindly updated for the modern era of cycling.

The Suzuki Boulevard C90T is a good alternative to the Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce, Fat Boy, and Electra Glide cruiser motorcycles on the used market. For the same price, if not less, you could get Suzuki's 1,462 cc engine with less than 5,000 miles on it from 2018 or 2019, while yet again, the Harleys that go for this price are pre-2010 models, with almost all of them having around 40,000 miles on the odometer.

Suzuki C90T Engine And Performance Specs

Yamaha star venture (2018-2020), used price range: $13,799 - $24,999.

Whereas the Kawasaki Vulcan 900 favors strength and sturdiness over speed, the Yamaha Star Venture happens to have a perfect balance between the two features. In terms of strength, the Star Venture from Yamaha is powered by a 1,854 cc fuel-injected V-Twin engine.

On the used motorcycle market, you'll find great deals for pre-2010s models of the Star Venture, but we would definitely recommend going for the 2018–2020 models.

The Yamaha Star Venture is a good alternative to the Harley-Davidson Road Glide and Electra Glide touring motorcycles . Harley's tourers sure pack a lot of punch and presence, but Yamaha's blacked-out star tourer is much too stylish compared to the Harleys. Of course, there's also the reliability factor, with Yamaha at the top of the table in reliability and Harley at an unenviable 6th spot.

Kawasaki Eliminator

Starting msrp: $6,649.

As far as beginner motorcycles go, Kawasaki does have some great offerings. Be it one of the best beginner sports bikes in the Ninja 400 or the Z400 naked bike, Kawasaki does deserve a lot of credit for offering great motorcycles for those looking to dip their toe in the two-wheel pond.

As such, the Japanese Titan offers a fantastic cruiser motorcycle in the 2024 Kawasaki Eliminator , which rides on a 451cc parallel twin and packs a sufficient amount of punch. The selling point is undoubtedly the design, which, while timeless, is also quite modern and refined. Easy on the eyes and easy on the wallet, the Kawasaki Eliminator cruiser motorcycle is definitely for those who want the road presence that comes with a swanky cruiser without blowing a hole in their account.

The Kawasaki is a better alternative than similarly-priced Harley-Davidson cruisers on the used motorcycle market. For this price, you'd find deals for Harley's 500 cc or 750 cc models, but only from three or two years old. Not only would you get a brand new Kawasaki Eliminator for that price, but you'd also get a much more reliable cruiser, along with a year of company warranty.

Honda shadow phantom, starting msrp: $8,399.

Honda 's cruiser motorcycles are bikes to be reckoned with. This traditional-style cruiser, the Shadow Phantom, now comes with optional ABS for 2024 , thanks to a new rear-disc brake. Add some great-looking paint schemes, a bevy of new instruments, and a powerful 745cc liquid-cooled V-twin engine, and have a winner at hand.

The bobber-inspired styling is sure to turn heads wherever you ride, with the low seat height making this one of the most comfortable cruiser motorcycles under $10,000. There are also tank-mounted controls, sitting in a blacked-out pod to match the rest of the motorcycle. The Shadow Phantom is certainly one of the best beginner cruiser motorcycles out there.

The Honda Shadow Phantom is a good alternative to any new Harley-Davidson model, seeing how the cheapest brand-new Harley today is the Harley-Davidson Sportster, which would cost $13,499.

2024 Honda Shadow Phantom Engine And Performance Specs

Yamaha bolt r-spec, starting msrp: $8,899.

Yamaha might not be known for their cruiser bikes since it is definitely Yamaha sports bikes that take much of the limelight. However, the brand has certainly offered some great cruisers, and one such honorable mention is the under-appreciated Yamaha Bolt R-Spec . Introduced in 2013, the model benefits from a 942cc air-cooled 4-stroke, 4-valve SOHC V-twin engine that has been improved and updated upon each and every model ever since its initial release.

The 2023 Yamaha Bolt R-Spec is a pretty interesting proposition, riding on a massive 942cc engine, jetting out enough ponies to keep you thinking about the next time you'll get to ride it. Of course, it's impossible to ignore the fact that Yamaha was also named the most reliable motorcycle manufacturer in a Consumer Reports survey, which only makes the Bolt R-Spec all the more recommendable.

Yet again, this Yamaha motorcycle, the Bolt R-Spec, is a good alternative to the cheapest Harley-Davidson today, which is the Harley Sportster. On the used motorcycle market, you would find deals for the Harley-Davidson Iron 883 at a sub-$9,000 price, but none of them would be brand-new. Secondly, the Yamaha reliability behind the Bolt R-Spec is far more trustworthy.

Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom

Starting msrp: $9,899.

Kawasaki Has a long, rich line of motorcycles - as well as jet skis and ATVs, for anyone interested - but one of their greatest achievements has been their creation of the Vulcan 900. The Vulcan might not have as many horses as its Harley-Davidson competitors, but the 900cc cruiser motorcycle more than makes up for it with its great torque and style.

For the 2024 model year, the Kawasaki Vulcan is available in three trims , namely the Vulcan 900 Classic, the Vulcan 900 Custom, and the Vulcan 900 Classic LT. The fuel-injected 903cc engine packs a remarkable punch, and the star of the show is certainly the intense-looking exhaust system that, paired with the premium fit and finish of the motorcycle, lends it a fantastic road presence.

The Kawasaki Vulcan 900 is a good alternative to the Harley-Davidson Street 750 or the Iron 883. Not only would you get the Japanese cruiser brand-new, but you'd also be riding a more sophisticated, newer cruiser motorcycle that doesn't just come with a year's warranty from the company but also a higher reliability rating.

Honda Rebel 1100T

Starting msrp: $11,299.

Another fantastic Honda cruiser motorcycle is the Rebel. The Rebel lineup from Honda offers a great cruiser for beginners in the Rebel 300, an impressive 500cc variant for more power, and the 1100cc Rebel at the top. Low seat height and a relaxed riding position come with the territory, but it's the Rebel 1100's great low-end torque and remarkable power when you open the throttle that will leave all riders thoroughly impressed.

Of course, Honda hasn't left any features on the cutting floor, with cruise control, ABS, and an automatic DCT transmission being additions to write home about. The throttle-by-wire configuration also results in four separate riding modes being offered on the Rebel 1100, those being Standard, Rain, Sport, and the fourth riding mode being user-customizable.

Honda's Rebel 1100T is a much better alternative than the closest brand-new Harley-Davidson motorcycle in 2023. Compared to the Harley-Davidson Nightster, which sells for $13,499, the Honda Rebel 1100T isn't just cheaper but a lot more comfortable and beginner-friendly. Plus, the horsepower and torque are pretty much the same, with the Honda having two pound-feet more torque while the Harley offers 4hp more.

Suzuki boulevard m109r b.o.s.s., starting msrp: $15,599.

Is it any surprise at all that the last motorcycle on this list is a Suzuki, too? Suzuki's remarkable power cruiser nearly achieves motorcycle perfection. The 2023 Suzuki Boulevard M109R B.O.S.S. (Blacked Out Special Suzuki) is propelled by an impressive 1,783cc engine that boasts some of the largest pistons in the motorcycle industry.

Exceptionally well-designed and enthusiastic about unleashing its full power, the M109R B.O.S.S. stands as a true beast among cruiser motorcycles, often surpassing the offerings from Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycles. Boasting 125 horsepower delivered to the wheel, this motorcycle is not only powerful but also exceptionally comfortable, making it a top contender on your must-have list.

The Suzuki Boulevard M109R B.O.S.S. is highly recommended over close Harley-Davidson motorcycles like the Softail Standard and the Nightster cruiser motorcycle , which fall in the same price range. Not only does the Suzuki offer more horsepower and torque than either of the two bikes, along with a bigger engine, but it also offers a more impressive feature list that could make this the last bike you ever need to buy.

2023 Suzuki Boulevard M109R B.O.S.S. Engine And Performance Specs

Kawasaki vulcan 1700 voyager, starting msrp: $19,799.

Kawasaki calls the Vulcan 1700 Voyager "the king of Kawasaki touring cruisers" . That would have been a tall claim had the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer not been able to back it up. There's a monstrous 1,700cc V-twin engine that arms this cruiser, along with a bevy of tech that keeps the ride planted, comfortable, and refined at every speed.

There's an electronic cruise control system for those long country road trips, large instrumentation packed with tech, and a radio system for your entertainment needs while you munch down miles with the two wheels underneath you.

The Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager is a much better alternative than the 2023 Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 , which does sell for cheaper but offers considerably less torque and features. We would also recommend it over the Harley-Davidson Low Rider S, which, while more affordable, could never be as comfortable, feature-packed, or eye-catching as the Voyager.

10 Great Japanese Motorcycles For Beginner Riders

Top 10 tips for motorcycle camping, 10 best motorcycle intercom systems.

After getting rid of the over passed Vulcan 1500 and coming up with an entire 1700cc lineup composed of classic, classic tourers and touring models offering riders the possibility to find the ideal model without going in another manufacturer’s dealership, we’re now talking about the amazing all-new Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 which concludes under the Classic, Classic LT, Nomad and Voyager, all 2010 model years.

  • Make: Array
  • Model: 2010 Kawasaki Vulcan 1700
  • Engine/Motor: Four-stroke, liquid-cooled, SOHC, four valve per cylinder, 52˚ V-twin
  • Torque: 108 lb-ft @ 2,250 rpm (2,750 rpm-Nomad and Voyager)
  • Transmission: Six-speed with overdrive
  • [do not use] Vehicle Model: Array

Introduction

The four different and yet very similar models can be classified in two categories: first, there are the two Classic models blending in timeless looks with modern technology and powered by the 1700cc, four-stroke, liquid-cooled, SOHC, four valve per cylinder, 52-degree V-twin engine delivering peak torque (108 lb-ft) at just 2,250 rpm. These first two models feature a 6.7 inches trail. And secondly, the Nomad and Voyager models, which are powered by the same engine delivering maximum torque 500 rpms higher on the rev range, while featuring the same 30-degree rake and an appropriate, but different 7 inches trail. Apart from this, dimensions, weight and looks make all the difference between the four models featuring the same powerplant. All these bikes are fed through a digital fuel injection system with dual 42mm throttle bodies. This, together with exhaust tuning, makes sure the engine delivers loads of torque just above idle, so this is where Kawasaki worked at in order to achieve the torque curve difference that splits the Vulcan 1700 lineup in two. An Electronic Throttle Valve System ensures great engine response and constant acceleration without having a dramatic influence over fuel consumption. The system has an Accelerator Position Sensor and a Throttle Position Sensor which work together for the best throttle response and in the worst case scenario (a sensor failure) will send a signal to the ECU so that riders would find out through the On Board Diagnostics system what’s wrong with their bike. Let’s just hope that you’ll never experience that. Still, the engine isn’t that much of a blast among cruisers mostly because it features a single cam per cylinder, so Kawi mates it to the six-speed gearbox with overdrive. This way, riders are offered the possibility of reaching a higher top speed without the increased fuel consumption. Relaxed, economic and quiet cruising is what these bikes are all about so apart from the efficient tranny, all models get belt final drive which also requires no maintenance, just regular replacement. Comfort isn’t to be ignored either and on the Vulcan 1700 series there are no reasons to complain as these come with Dual Adjustable Rear Air-Shocks that adjust spring preload with air and offer 4-way rebound damping adjustments. Up front, the Classic, Classic LT and Nomad models are offered the proper steering feedback through a 43mm telescopic fork, while the Voyager model comes with a 45mm one meeting the same demands as on its lighter siblings. All models are fitted with all around 300mm disc brakes with twin-piston calipers on the Classic, Classic LT and Nomad, while the much heavier Voyager has four-piston calipers and only two at the rear. Also, this last model is the most sophisticated when it comes to braking performance as Kawasaki uses Advanced Coactive-Braking Technology with optional ABS to put it to a complete and secure stop. The lowest seat height is that of the Classic and its corresponsive LT model (only 28.3 inches from the ground), but this also implies a ground clearance of only 5.1 inches, so expect a lot of scraping the tarmac with the footrests when approaching corners a little bit too fast and being needed to lean more than the usual. With a seat height of 28.7 inches and a ground clearance of 5.5 inches of the Nomad and 5.3 inches of the Voyager, expect for the same scraping action in this case from much heavier piece of motorcycles, something that would make it even harder on the riders to keep the things under control in tricky situations. Kawi’s only possible explication is that the low seat heights were definite musts and the low ground clearance and the implicit low center of gravity allows for light handling. Kawasaki introduced the all-new models to offer both diversity and alternatives to some of the most notorious classic and touring motorcycles out there. Now, all models in the Vulcan 1700 lineup come with improved exhaust pipe heat shielding and improved radiator ducting, meaning that riders won’t start boiling when traversing crowded cities. Also, a coolant pipe has been shortened for easier oil-screen maintenance and all four models get cool new color combinations.

Competition

The Honda VTX1800N and VTX1800T as well as the Suzuki Boulevard C109R and Boulevard C109RT stand as Japanese alternatives to the Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Classic and Classic LT. So are the Star Roadliner and Star Stratoliner models, but this maker also offers the Royal Star Venture against the Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager model. The Star is powered by a liquid-cooled 1298cc V-four engine, so competitors come in all shapes and sizes. In matter of cruiser and tourers, Harley-Davidson is THE leader, but this time we’ll stop at their Ultra Classic Electra Glide model as this is the most appropriate American solution to the same riding demands that the Voyager satisfies. The Electra Glide is powered by Harley’s air-cooled, 96-cubic-inch V-twin fuel-injected motor offering a unique rush thanks to the 92.6 ft-lbs of torque that it develops at 3,500 rpm. Wet weight is 889 lbs which is very close to Kawi’s 886 lbs wet weight for the Standard Voyager and 895 lbs wet weight for the ABS-equipped Voyager model. This Harley-Davidson starts at $20,999, so price is most likely the main reason why people will head to Kawasaki dealerships to check out the new massive tourer.

Style is important as well and Kawasaki approaches a different one for each of the Vulcan 1700 models. To begin with, the 2010 Vulcan 1700 Classic is the simplest of them all. With timeless cruiser lines characterizing it from the start and to the rear, it’s no doubt that Kawasaki did use the Vulcan 1500 heritage, but in a rather refined manner. Chrome is present in abundance, from the tank mounted instruments and to the slash-cut exhaust pipes. The cast wheels feature nine spokes and the 1700cc V-twin motor shines brightly in between them. Available in Metallic Diablo Black/Candy Surf Blue, this thing is ready to hit the Boulevards and create the impression of being a much more expensive motorcycle thanks to the impeccable fit and finish. The  2010 Vulcan 1700 Classic LT adds a height adjustable windscreen, seat and passenger backrest as well as a pair of spacious leather saddlebags on top of the classic cruiser looks and transforms into a touring motorcycle. The two-tone color scheme available for this model (Metallic Imperial Red/Metallic Titanium) is also supposed to set it apart from the simple model that inspired its creation. Replacing the leather saddlebags with a pair of hard, lockable, top-opening ones determines Kawasaki to call practically the same touring motorcycle “Nomad” and paint it Metallic Diablo Black/Metallic Titanium. The most imposing among them all is the 2010 Vulcan 1700 Voyager, which stands out thanks to a large old school front fairing which’s lines are defined by the big chromed headlamp and the twin fog lights inspired by the auto industry (or should have I said Harley-Davidson?). Behind the big windscreen, riders are spoiled by old style analog instrumentation featuring speedometer, tachometer and coolant temperature gauge. There is also an LCD display and an iPod as the audio system. This thing is built for the long haul and the 13.2 gallons trunk and 10 gallons side cases show it best. The bucket-style seat is nice too, but present on all previously mentioned models. Still, the passenger gets sofa-like accommodation on the Voyager as that big trunk also plays the role of a backrest. Colors available for the most radical Vulcan 1700 out there are Metallic Diablo Black/Metallic Imperial Red Metallic Midnight Sapphire Blue/Metallic Moondust Gray Metallic Diablo Black/Metallic Imperial Red (Vulcan Voyager ABS).

Press Reviews

"The power delivery from the new 1700cc long stroke mill was definitely sufficient. It makes excellent power from just off idle up to around 3500 RPMs. From there to the 6,000 RPM redline, the engine still pulled, but it felt restrained or choked off. I have a feeling adding an aftermarket intake would go a long way towards curing that issue." – motorcycledaily "The engines in both the Nomad and Voyager are tuned to provide more torque at higher rpm, with the full 108 lb-ft delivered at 2750 rpm. At the throttle, you feel the motorcycle builds power a tad slower than the Classic or Classic LT, which are tuned so that peak torque comes on at 2250 rpm." – motorcycle-usa "Changes to the drive train are also big improvements over the 1600s. The first is a six-speed transmission with a true overdrive top gear. The second is that the shaft drive has been ditched for a belt. Previously, belts had to be very wide to handle the power of big bikes. Kawasaki has developed a carbon fiber-based belt that is only 28mm wide (just over one inch)." – motorcyclecruiser "The big Vulc is no less impressive at higher speeds, responding relatively crisply to a shove on the bars. It’s no ZX-10R, of course, but it reacts willingly to a rider’s inputs. As with any cruiser, especially those with floorboards, twisty-road fun is limited by the amount of cornering clearance.” – motorcycle "In the power department, our seat-of-the-pants impressions place the Voyager ahead of the H-D Ultra Classic Electra Glide we tested in the May issue." – cycleworld

The cheapest motorcycle among the four is the Classic which starts at $12,999. This is followed by the corresponsive LT model that comes with an MSRP of $ 14,199 and the Nomad starting at $15,199. With the base MSRP starting at $17,299 for the ABS-free model and at $18,399 for the ABS-equipped model, the Venture model is also the most expensive in its lineup, but not in its class.

For the category that they are positioned in and for what they offer, the slightly revised 2010 Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 models are pretty good deals without which we could have indeed ride peacefully, but which also rummage our thoughts now that we know about the top quality involved. So, should have Kawi simply concentrated on improving the ZX-14 or was the 1700cc cruisers/tourers lineup a must as well?

Powerful 1700cc V-Twin engine

  • Liquid cooled, 4-valve per cylinder, fuel-injected 1700cc 52˚ V-twin engine
  • Long-stroke 102 x 104mm bore and stroke helps deliver massive torque, distinctive V-twin feel
  • Valve system uses a single overhead cam arrangement instead of pushrods, for quick revability and enhanced mid-high rpm power
  • Semi-dry sump allows low crankshaft placement and long stroke without increasing engine height
  • Single-pin crank accentuates the engine’s V-twin character by providing strong power-pulses
  • Large capacity airbox is located on both sides of the engine
  • Small-diameter iridium sparkplugs reach deep into the combustion chamber for high combustion efficiency, especially during low-load operation
  • Dual staggered mufflers offer a rich sound and stylish appearance
  • Engine tuning offers superior acceleration in the 50-70mph range
  • Even in overdrive, the engine pulls strongly, facilitating overtaking at highway speeds

Fuel Injection

  • The Vulcan 1700 takes advantage of FI and exhaust tuning optimized for maximum performance in the low-mid-rpm range, giving it plenty of grunt on the boulevard
  • Utilizes one sensor in place of the usual three, for simplicity and light weight
  • Based on the systems used by the Ninja 650R and Vulcan 900 motorcycles

Electronic Throttle Valve System

  • Fully electronic throttle actuation system enables the ECU to control the volume of intake air (via throttle valve angle) and fuel (via fuel injector timing) delivered to the engine
  • Optimized fuel injector timing and throttle valve position results in accurate, powerful engine response
  • Control of both fuel injection and airflow provides easy starting and precise cold-engine idle speed control
  • From the rider’s perspective, the ETV works like a standard cable-operated throttle - the throttle grip is still connected to cables, so the feel at the grip is the same
  • Twisting the throttle turns a pulley on the throttle body which triggers the Accelerator Position Sensor (APS) to send a signal to the ECU, which then modulates the throttle valves via a DC motor
  • Accurate throttle position is relayed to the ECU by a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
  • APS and TPS send two sets of signals to the ECU for system redundancy in the unlikely event of a sensor failure

On Board Diagnostics

  • Diagnostic system allows self testing of the electronic systems on the Vulcan 1700
  • Displays codes on the instrumentation, which can be read by owner from the accessory manual

Six-Speed Transmission / Final Drive

  • 5th and 6th gear are overdrive gears, contributing to stress-free riding and better fuel economy when cruising at highway speeds
  • 28mm carbon fiber final drive belt offers a 40 percent increase in tensile strength compared to current Kevlar belts. This allows the Vulcan 1700 to use a slim belt, only 2mm wider than the Kevlar belt on the Vulcan 900
  • Belt drive system is quiet, efficient and offers reduced maintenance compared to a chain

Light Handling Chassis

  • Compact frame features a shorter wheelbase, and short distance between the seat and steering head, for an ideal ergonomic layout and easy maneuverability
  • Light and as slim as possible, the frame minimizes the number of forged parts and trims any unnecessary metal. The only forged parts are areas that require additional strength - the down-tube joint, engine brackets, side-stand bracket, and rear fender/shock absorber bracket
  • The compact design contributes to light handling and facilitates maneuverability at low speeds, especially when executing precise slow-speed maneuvers like parking or making U-turns

43mm Telescopic Fork

  • Provides superb steering feedback
  • 5.5 inches of travel for excellent ride quality

Dual Adjustable Rear Air-Shocks

  • Air adjustable spring preload can be tuned to match varying rider and passenger loads
  • 4-way rebound damping adjustments help the shocks compensate for changes in spring pressure
  • Chromed shock covers contribute to the bike’s luxurious finish

9-Spoke Cast Wheels

  • Allow the use of tubeless tires and complement the Vulcan 1700’s muscular styling

  • Deeply chromed engine covers have curved upper surfaces. Their three-dimensional form adds volume and gives a high quality appearance
  • The edges of the cooling fins receive a special NC treatment that makes them gleam in sunlight

  • LED taillight looks elegant and provides years of trouble-free service

Instrumentation

  • Ignition switch allows on-position key removal; preventing key bunches from scratching the instrument cluster or tank while the bike is in operation
  • Turning the ignition switch collar to the OFF position turns the engine off and necessitates re-insertion of the key to restart
  • Multi-function LCD displays on the tank-mounted instrument cluster are controlled by switches on the right handlebar. Features include a gear position indicator, fuel gauge, clock, odometer, dual trip meters, remaining mileage range and average fuel consumption
  • Liberal use of chrome on the engine, fender brackets, light stays, and rear shock covers contrast nicely with the bodywork’s deep, lustrous paint

2010 Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager Distinctive Features

New 2nd generation kawasaki advanced coactive-braking technology (k-act) abs.

  • Voyager ABS models feature the latest, fastest version of Kawasaki’s sophisticated K-ACT system, which enables riders to execute controlled, balanced braking. Designed to complement the riders’ brake inputs, the system distributes the ideal amount of brake pressure to maximize braking efficiency
  • The new K-ACT uses the same ECU and ABS unit found on the Concours 14, but has only one mode option instead of the other bike’s two-mode system
  • Low battery mode maintains ABS function while reducing signal frequency to conserve power when needed.
  • For controllability in tight corners and when executing U-turns, K-ACT’s coactive function does not engage when braking is initiated at speeds below 12mph
  • The ABS function is disengaged at speeds below 4mph
  • Both ABS and non-ABS models use dual 300mm front disc brakes with four-piston calipers and a two-piston rear disc brake for sure, powerful stops

Cruise Control

  • A more compact package than its predecessors, the Voyager has a shorter wheelbase and shorter distance between the seat and steering head, for improved rider ergonomics and easier maneuverability
  • Designed to be as light and slim as possible, the frame minimizes the number of forged parts and trims any unnecessary metal. The only forged parts are areas that require additional strength
  • the down-tube joint, engine brackets, side-stand bracket, and rear fender/shock absorber bracket
  • The compact design contributes to light handling and facilitates handling at low speeds, especially when executing precise slow speed maneuvers like parking or making U-turns
  • 5.5 inches of travel helps provide excellent ride quality
  • Feature Air adjustable spring preload to help compensate for passenger and luggage variations
  • Voyager specific settings to match the load carrying and long distance touring requirements inherent in this type of motorcycle
  • Allow the use of tubeless tires and complement the Voyager’s muscular styling
  • 130/90 front and 170/70 rear radial tires offer good traction and wear characteristics
  • Tire choice and suspension settings augment the chassis’ light handling characteristics
  • Basic architecture has a significant impact on a V-Twin engine’s appearance
  • Deeply chromed engine covers have curved upper surfaces. Their three-dimensional form adds volume and gives a quality appearance
  • All the non-chromed parts of the engine have a matt black finish that further accentuates the chromed parts
  • Muscular front fairing is reminiscent of classic American muscle cars in its sculpted, flowing design
  • Chromed headlamp cover and twin fog lights contribute to the muscle car theme
  • The fuel tank’s hand-sculpted contours employ a constantly varying radius, giving the bike a dynamic flow that is pleasing both to the eye and to the touch
  • The lines flowing through the rest of the bike and its elegant fuel tank contribute to the Voyager’s curvaceous figure
  • Liberal use of chrome contrasts nicely with the bodywork’s deep, lustrous paint. The engine, front and rear guards, accents on the side cases and trunk, and the trunk brackets are fully chromed
  • Design motif from the front fender is continued by the rear fender, which features an elegant LED taillight
  • Front and rear guards help protect the bike’s bodywork in case of a tip-over
  • Dual 35W fog lights have a dedicated On/Off switch and can be adjusted vertically
  • In addition to the taillight on the rear fender, the Voyager also has a large, highly visible LED taillight mounted on the rear of the trunk that contributes to its appearance

  • Ignition switch allows key removal in the on-position; preventing keys from damaging the chrome finish around the ignition area during operation
  • Turning the ignition switch collar to the ACC position allows accessories to be used while the engine is off and turning it to the “OFF” position turns the engine off and necessitates re-insertion of the key to restart
  • A number of features facilitate comfortable long-distance touring
  • Large windshield and front fairing help protect the rider and passenger from wind and elements
