فلاح تركي من ريف مرعش يقرر الهجرة بطريقة غير شرعية رفقة زوجته وإبنه الصغير من تركيا إلى سويسرا مرورا بإيطاليا ويمر بالعديد من المطبات، رحلة مليئة بالمعاناة وجشع السماسرة وقسوة الطقس والتضاريس.. في جوابه على سؤال ضابط الشرطة قال الريفي المسكين إن ما قاده لهاته الرحلة الانتحارية هو الأمل.. فقط الأمل لحياة أفضل.

Eine Familie will aus der Türkei in die Schweiz auswandern. Dieses Drama zeigt ihre Reise auf durchaus bewegende Weise und sogar nach wahren Begebenheiten. Auch wenn Start und Ziel heute vielleicht etwas anders sind, so gibt es heute noch umso mehr solche Schicksale. Entsprechend vermutlich auch bereits präsenter, fehlt dem Film aus heutiger Sicht wieder etwas, doch die Voraussicht, wenn man es so nennen will, ist doch beeindruckend. Ist auf Türkisch und Schweizerdeutsch. 70/100

خلال الفيلم تجرأ عقلي على قول "كل هذا بسبب جشعك وطمعك يا حيدر"، لكن أدركت بعدها مدى جرمي. ف كيف أحمل هذا المسكين هذا الذنب وكل سبل حياته تقوده لذلك؟. تحت وطأة حكومة سيئة تجعل الألاف من البشر يهاجرون و يهربون سعيا إلى لقمة عيش كريمة لا غير!. هذه السراب المسمى بالجنة تلاشى عنده نزوله إلى أرض الواقع وأن الأمل الحقيقي ليس إلا تمسكك بحياتك البسيطة والحفاظ عليها لا غير.

عمل غير مناسب لي البتة لأنه أدخلني في دوامة من الحزن أحتاج لأيام لكي أخرج منها.

March Around the World 2018 23/30 Switzerland/ Turkey(?)

More aptly titled "Journey of Poor Decisions," Journey of Hope is a mostly failed attempt at a tear-jerker to make you really sympathize with these immigrants. Now don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't feel for many refugees around the world going through such trials, it's just that the film doesn't make me feel this way. The protagonists don't flee from political persecution or war, they literally see a picture of Switzerland on a postcard and decide they should leave their modest, but still perfectly sustainable lives, in order to leave for the land of "chocolate factories" and "where butter will flow from the udder of a goat."

Can hope be found on a postcard? That is what a Kurdish family living on a farm in Turkey dreams about after looking at a postcard: desire for a better quality of life in Switzerland. They will sell all their possessions, including the farm, to search for the land of milk and honey. The adventures they experience along the way will make the journey of hope seem like a pipe dream.

This is a timely movie because it illustrates a real-life scenario: the plight of the Kurds in the Middle East, which started in the late 80s as they emigrate to other countries, escaping political turmoil and bad economic conditions. That same scenario is still taking place today, just as it did more than 20 years ago, with the instability in the Middle East. That fact makes the movie timely.

Husband and wife Haydar and Meryam take their youngest child, Mustafa, along for the trip. They are smuggled inside the cargo hold of a ship sailing for Italy. Once there, a kindly truck driver shows compassion and takes them to the Swiss border. But border guards will not allow the family to cross, sending them to Milan, where they meet a group of unscrupulous human smugglers who only care about money, not the value of human life. The smugglers take them to a dangerous mountain pass in the Alps, where the weather is rough, and they lose all their possessions.

Some of the people with the family, including Meryam, manage to make it safely to a small Swiss region. Haydar is reunited with Meryam some time later, but their son Mustafa, unfortunately, has frozen to death due to the hardships of the trip. So any gains achieved are overshadowed by all they lost. Was it worth it?

"Journey of Hope" tells a story which is repeated tens of thousands of times every year in Europe, as poor workers from the southern countries travel north to what they hope will be better jobs with larger paychecks. The movie, which won this year's Academy Award as best foreign film, tells of a family that leaves its secure life in a hill village of Turkey, and travels by rail, ship, car, truck, and finally foot toward the mirage of a new life in Switzerland.

Because the motion picture camera has a tendency to make everything it photographs look picturesque, life in Turkey seems fairly idyllic for the family. Their small home nestles next to olive trees on a beautiful hillside, and they have a secure place in the daily life of their village. But the greater world beckons. They study a postcard from a relative, which shows snow-capped mountains and promises a paradise in Switzerland. And eventually the father, restless, ambitious, determines that they must sell everything they own to buy passage to the north.

They find people who are eager to help - other Turks who operate this cruel parody of the underground railway. They are told they must leave their children behind - to "follow" as soon as the money starts rolling in - but they take one boy, the brightest. The wife is filled with fears and misgivings. She cannot envision leaving her home and family, but her husband has a fierce light in his eye, a vision that will not be denied, and in their society it is his decision which is final.

We follow the details of the journey, every step of which is designed to part the travelers from their money - not only through tickets and bribes, but also through currency exchange scams and simple con games. Some of the most memorable moments show the travelers waiting through long nights in cold, empty train stations - strangers in a strange land. Eventually the family and others find themselves in Italy, on the slopes of the Alps, being advised to walk across in weather so dangerous the guide refuses to take them - and is punished by the criminals who run the racket.

The conclusion of the movie is easily guessed. The only surprise is that the Swiss are portrayed as being generally humane to their uninvited visitors; other movies about illegal European immigrants, such as Dusan Makevejev's " Montenegro ," about Greeks in Sweden, or Rainer Werner Fassbinder's "Fear Eats the Soul: Ali," about a Moroccan in Germany, show a degree of racism that is not seen in this film.

"Journey of Hope" concerns a persistent pattern of immigration that mirrors, in Europe, the northward drift of American black people in the years after World War I. But it does not give much of the larger view, and never deals with the fact that Germany, Switzerland, the Scandinavian countries and other rich nations actually need these poor, cheap Southerners to do menial jobs that the locals disdain.

The film prefers a tighter focus on this one family, its journey and its fate. And at the end it is difficult to say what lesson has been learned. Their experience itself reminded me of " The Grapes of Wrath ," another story of a family on the road toward an elusive mirage of economic security. There is enormous potential here, but the film does not quite pay off, and the crucial decisions taken at each stage of this story are often so stupid and foolhardy that we despair; this family is taking such chances, we feel, that only the gods can save it. And the gods do not seem to care.

Journey of Hope (German: Reise der Hoffnung; Turkish: Umuda yolculuk) is a 1990 film directed by Xavier Koller. It tells the story of a Turkish Alevi family trying to illegally emigrate to Switzerland, a country they know only from a postcard. The film is a co-production between companies in Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom. The film won the 1990 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film was submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Los Angeles, USA) by the Swiss Government, resulting in the second Oscar win ever for Switzerland.

'Journey of Hope' sculpture installation begins in Fort Myers-Dunbar neighborhood

The City of Fort Myers Redevelopment Agency (CRA) commissioned a capital art project titled, “Journey of Hope” in 2022. The sculpture is now being brought to life.

Despite threatening rain clouds and the sun’s searing heat, the anticipation on install day is palpable. A crane hoists elements of a long-awaited sculpture onto a semi-circular concrete pedestal.

“It's been two years in the making and even longer when you consider that this is the first piece of public art really dedicated to the work and the investment and the contributions of women in this community,” said Hylton-Terry.

Michele Hylton-Terry is the Executive Director of the CRA. Among the women she described, Veronica Shoemaker stands out as a local icon. Shoemaker's legacy serves as the inspiration behind "Journey of Hope."

“Veronica Shoemaker is a giant in this community," said Hylton-Terry. "Veronica Shoemaker was the first African American female elected to [Fort Myers] City Council, and she is a woman who persevered. We hope to bring forth many more Veronica Shoemakers as a result of this work."

“Journey of Hope” depicts the profile of an African American woman's face set against a backdrop of sunburst lines and soaring birds.

The money for the capital art project comes through the CRA via a $100,000 tax increment. The sculpture is only one part of a larger MLK redevelopment trust fund project. The project monies have been broken out as illustrated below:

• $1,500 is dedicated to three finalists, each paid a design fee of $500 to develop a virtual proposal for final consideration by the Selection Committee.
• $98,500 is to be paid to the artist/artist team selected for this project, to cover materials including solar lighting (if any), engineering, fabrication, permitting, transportation, travel, installation, insurance, documentation, contingencies, and the artist’s/artist team’s fee.

The installation process is in it's beginning phase. Artist Cecilia Lueza is overseeing the precise placement of the sculpture’s profile and background components.

“I'm super happy," said Lueza. "I'm super happy that right now installation is going on, but I will be even more happy when the sculpture is finally painted and ready.”

Lueza is an Argentine American artist and sculptor living in St. Petersburg, Florida. She has been working on a variety of public art projects since 2000.

The 20-foot-tall sculpture is made of aircraft-grade aluminum and built to withstand the intense Southwest Florida weather.

In the coming weeks, the gleaming silver sculpture will be repainted. A 200-watt solar lighting system will illuminate the sculpture at night. Lueza emphasizes that this piece is intended to evoke a personal connection.

“Public art is a fantastic way to beautify and give meaning to a public space, parks, different areas in a city. It also can be a way to connect with its residents, you know, expressing something that's very important to them," said Lueza.

For Michele Hylton-Terry, “Journey of Hope” at this intersection of Veronica S. Shoemaker and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. boulevards, offers much-needed representation for the people who live in the historically Black community of Dunbar-Fort Myers.

“When we can see ourselves in the public art, children from this community, adults from this community, can be inspired to contribute to this community, as they do already," said Hylton-Terry. "But to be recognized for that contribution is just magnificent. And what it will do is to encourage our community to do even more.”

“Journey of Hope” is expected to be completed by the end of the summer.

Mother continues her daughter's legacy of hope through 'Journey Like June' foundation

Her daughter was an inspiration to thousands of people, and now she’s carrying on that message of hope to others. Meet Ali Peden. She's a mother, an advocate, and a positive force in the community.

Young June was a girl who won the hearts of people across Central Illinois. June was diagnosed with cancer at 13-months old, spending much of her life in and out of the hospital...

"She never lost her smile," says her mother, Ali. "She was always just the happiest thing. She would brighten any room she walked into."

June fought cancer for two years, never losing that smile as she endured 20 rounds of chemotherapy and multiple surgeries. Through it all, Central Illinois was cheering her on. Thousands of people turned out in Auburn for a special parade in honor of June.

"They posted it on their Facebook page," says Ali. "I think we had 835 cars in the parade. It was over two hours long".

Five days later, 3-year-old June passed away. Ali and her husband, Adam, created "Journey Like June", a non profit that helps local children going through cancer. The foundation provides online support groups, financial assistance, and projects for children in the hospital.

"We've started doing art days at St. John's Hospital, where we go in and just have an art project for the month," says Ali. "The kids come to us or we go to their rooms. We'll do an art project with them."

It's a simple act of kindness, spreading joy to others, something June did every day of her life.

Inaugural Choir Concerts Bring 'A Journey of Hope' to Maryland

S outhern Maryland recently experienced an uplifting musical event with Hope in Harmony’s inaugural choir concert series, titled “A Journey of Hope.” This series captivated audiences with memorable and immersive experiences, showcasing the talent and dedication of the “Hope in Harmony” choir.

Free Concerts Engaged the Public

The concert series, which was free to the public, delivered an inspiring program across three counties. The performances took place as follows:

• Friday, June 7, at 7 p.m. ET at Calvert High School in Calvert County (520 Fox Run Blvd, Prince Frederick, MD 20678)
• Saturday, June 8, at 7 p.m. ET at South Potomac Church in Charles County (4915 Crain Hwy, White Plains, MD 20695)
• Sunday, June 9, at 3 p.m. ET at Leonardtown High School in St. Mary’s County (23995 Point Lookout Rd, Leonardtown, MD 20650)

Artistic Director TC O’Brien expressed her enthusiasm about the concert series, highlighting the choir’s commitment to the craft of choral music and community engagement. “I am delighted to bring this series of concerts to our community, featuring our talented singers who are deeply committed to the craft of choral music and to uplifting our community through exhilarating performances. The Choir’s Vision and Mission

The program promised a diverse repertoire designed to resonate with a wide audience, providing both seasoned concert-goers and new listeners with an enriching experience. Each concert featured a unique blend of classical and contemporary choral works, reflecting the choir’s versatile range and deep emotional engagement.

Community Engagement

By offering free concerts, Hope in Harmony made a conscious effort to remove barriers to accessing the arts. This initiative underscored their belief in the transformative power of music and its ability to bring communities together. The concert series attracted a diverse audience, fostering a shared experience of hope and harmony.

The choice of venues across three counties ensured that the concerts were accessible to a broader audience. Each location was selected to provide optimal acoustics and an inviting atmosphere, enhancing the overall concert experience.

The phrase, “you have cancer,“ can be the most daunting anyone can hear. It creates uncertainty, fear, and a flood of questions about the future for you and your family. While the journey ahead feels overwhelming, I want to assure you that you are not alone. As part of the Supportive Oncology and Survivorship (SOS) team, we are here to support you every step of the way and help answer each of your questions.

As a palliative medicine doctor, I often encounter misunderstandings about my field. Many are unfamiliar with the term “ palliative medicine ,” confusing it with hospice care. I am not “the hospice doctor.” Instead, I like to think of myself as the “quality-of-life doctor.” My role is to help you manage the physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges through your entire cancer treatment journey.

“Many patients describe their treatment journey as a roller coaster. We are here to help you navigate the ups and downs.”

Our team of doctors, nurses, social workers, and chaplains is focused on helping you live well with your diagnosis, through treatment and beyond. We address symptoms like pain, nausea, depression, and anxiety so that you can focus on the things that bring you joy.

Working closely with your oncologists, we can ease some of the burdens, stress, and worries that come with a cancer diagnosis and its treatments. While they oversee your treatment, we dedicate our time to understanding how your illness and treatment impact your life and loved ones. While there may be difficult decisions to make, we will navigate this journey together with compassion and dignity. Above all, we respect your wishes and are here to ensure you receive care that aligns with what matters most to you. Many patients describe their treatment journey as a roller coaster. We are here to help you navigate the ups and downs.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd. 

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that. 

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role. 

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

Lori and James Garner had raised their two children and were enjoying their time being empty nesters in Abilene. Then, in November of 2021, James was diagnosed with stage 4 follicular lymphoma.

“It turned our entire world upside down,” Lori says, referring to the days after the diagnosis. “We weren’t sure how to find the best place to go for treatment.” Because they were familiar with Baylor Scott & White Health, they did some research and found out that Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas has a long history of treating patients with blood and bone marrow cancers.

Lori visited the Baylor Scott & White patient navigation website and made contact. By 8:30 the next morning, she had received a call from Stacey Webb, manager of the Patient Navigation Program at Baylor Scott & White Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center - Dallas .

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

From endangered to empowered: The Topeka shiner’s journey

In the heart of America's midwest, a quiet revolution in conservation is taking root. As the United States celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act, the prairies and waterways of America's heartland have been quietly weaving an uplifting tale of partnership, resilience and ecological triumph. Kraig McPeek, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Illinois-Iowa Field Supervisor, shared his optimism about the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act., "As we celebrate half a century of the Endangered Species Act, the story of the oxbow restoration and the Topeka shiner is a reminder of what we can accomplish together."   

We at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are part of a remarkable partnership creating ripples of change throughout the midwest. This coalition of state agencies, agricultural associations, and passionate farmers has come together with one purpose: to restore and safeguard Iowa's precious oxbow habitats and, in doing so, protect the stability of oxbow ecosystems. Our Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program acts as the very glue binding the coalition together. 

Oxbows, U-shaped remnants of river meanders, are vital for ecosystem health, acting as biodiversity hotspots and playing key roles in water filtration and flood control serving as important habitat. Central to these habitats is the endangered Topeka shiner, a small, native freshwater fish. Its presence or absence reflects the overall health of the ecosystem. 

An oxbow is formed when a winding curve of a river becomes isolated due to erosion of river banks and the creation of a new river channel during high water flow. Sediment builds up in oxbows. Oxbows dry out. They disappear altogether when plants cover them. The degradation of these special places, as seen in places like West Buttrick Creek in Iowa’s Raccoon River watershed, not only diminishes water quality but also threatens the survival of the Topeka shiner and other aquatic species. Restoring oxbows is crucial not just for this species, but for maintaining the health of freshwater systems.

With the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act in 2023, the revival story of the Topeka shiner highlights the critical role of partnerships, innovation, and the sustained dedication of local communities. 

Landowner partnership: The cornerstone of conservation

Without the commitment of landowners, the restoration of oxbow wetlands would remain a distant dream. Kathy Law and her husband, Dave Law, are Iowa farmers who participated in oxbow restoration on their land, stressed the significance of these partnerships, emphasizing, "Landowner involvement is paramount. Their commitment to preserving natural habitats has been the linchpin of this endeavor." 

The narrative gets richer when we consider the multi-faceted benefits that farmers reap from oxbow restoration. For farmers, the benefits of participating in oxbow restoration extend beyond ecological preservation. Brandon Iddings of the Iowa Soybean Association noted, "Not only have these wetland restorations become a haven for endangered species, but they've also proved beneficial for crop yields."

In the heart of Iowa, where family farms dot the landscape and generations have tilled the same land, Kathy speaks with reverence about the soil underfoot. "Our land is not merely an income source," she begins, echoing the sentiments of countless Iowa farmers. "It's our heritage. For many, these lands have been passed down through generations. It's not just about profit, it's our lifestyle, our very way of life." 

Kathy's commitment to the land is evident. But she also highlights a mutual relationship between conservation efforts and farming benefits. "When we participated in the oxbow restorations, the soil they removed was of such high quality that it was spread over one of our fields," she recalls. "This seemingly small act resulted in our corn yielding over 20 bushels more per acre. The only reason for this boost we can pinpoint is the improved quality of our soil from that deposited dirt." 

For Kathy and many like her, conservation isn't just about protecting nature—it's about enhancing productivity and ensuring their land's legacy continues. "There are tangible economic benefits alongside the invaluable environmental advantages," Kathy emphasizes. "It's not just about doing the right thing for nature, but also ensuring our land remains prosperous for generations to come." 

Joe emphasized the ease for farmers: "Through collaborations, farmers can participate in these restoration efforts without the burden of added costs." 

What’s Next: Hope for the Topeka shiner 

The restoration of oxbow habitats has been crucial for the Topeka shiner, with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service playing a significant role in bringing all the characters of this story together. When asked about their experiences working with partners on Topeka shiner conservation, staff shared different perspectives along the same narrative – the future for this little fish depends on collaborative conservation much like a community coming together to save the Topeka shiner. 

This sentiment is echoed by Kathy, who sees the increasing participation of landowners in oxbow restoration as a sign of growing grassroots conservation efforts. The success story of the Topeka shiner and oxbow restoration, showcasing community and organizational collaboration, offers hope and a model for future endeavors.

 "Every plot of land rejuvenated, every oxbow restored, brings us closer to a future where our natural habitats thrive," Brandon of the Iowa Soybean Association concluded.
