The perfect size of a van for a campervan conversion but the dated tech makes it a tough one to drive even for a seasoned driver. Perhaps Force will bring in a newer avatar into production soon, we can only hope.

To put it in simple terms, camper vans are recreational vehicles that provide you with not only a comfy ride but also provide cozy living spaces. Combining transport with accommodation, camper vans are perfect for road trips with friends and family. You can coast along the highways as you take in the picturesque beauty that surrounds you.    

Although camper vans don’t have much of a history in India, there’s been a recent surge in the number of people spending their holidays in one. With higher risks to be considered and more, while using public transport, it comes as no surprise that we would prefer to travel in private vehicles. Well, with camper vans we not only get safe and private transportation but also, we needn’t have to worry about finding a clean hotel to stay in.

• Safe private transportation   These days when we’re looking into taking a vacation, safety concerns remain a major factor of the planning process. After spending months locked away in our homes, travelling around surrounded by strangers proves to be a hectic ordeal. Sure, guidelines are in place to minimize risk, however, we do quite often see these guidelines flouted almost everywhere we go. That’s one of the greatest benefits of travelling by camper van. The only ones joining you on your holiday are your closest friends or family.   These motorhomes are designed with the intent of providing as comfortable a journey as possible. You can sit back and relax, without having to worry as much about catching the virus.    
• You needn’t bother booking hotels  The beauty of camper vans is that transport and accommodation have been bundled together, having been built on the premises of serving as a home-on-wheels. Generally, camper vans are equipped with cozy bedding that’s fixed into the body of the vehicle. Camping tents are yet another option for those who want to get as close to nature as possible. With no late check-outs to concern yourself with, you can sleep in as long as you’d like in your comfy campers.  Hotels can be expensive, especially when travelling with your family. Not to mention how hotel prices might soar during peak season. With camper vans, you can find very reasonably priced campsites where you’ll be surrounded by the lush green beauty of nature.     
• Flexible itinerary  When you’re travelling by public transport or even checking in at your hotel, you often have a strict time restraint to follow. Well, when you're travelling in a camper van, you get to enjoy the journey at your own pace. Enjoy the surreal sights as you pass them by, or maybe even park the camper for a few minutes to take in the fresh air and scenic surroundings.  With no fixed itinerary to abide by, make the most of your free time.   What if we made the decision to alter your travel plans in the middle of your journey? It isn't a problem at all. We won't have to bother about making hotel reservations ahead of time or arranging transportation to our new location. All we have to do now is pick a new campsite and plan the route to it. And all of this can be accomplished with a few simple mouse clicks on our laptop!   
• Safe storage  With public transport, we feel the need to keep an eye on our personal belongings when we're surrounded by strangers. Having heard so many stories of pickpockets and lost bags, we constantly struggle with keeping everything close to our chest. Yet another horror would be for when our flights have just landed, but somehow our baggage has been misplaced, leaving us stranded in a different city with none of our belongings.   Well camper vans solve that problem with ease, as all the valuables you may need are conveniently stored in your motorhome. With no one else having access to the vehicle, your belongings are safe from theft or misplacement.   
• Cost friendly  Although purchasing our own camper van can be a rather large expense, there are several sources for us to just rent the vehicle for short durations. When we compare the costs of renting a camper van to that of booking tickets and hotels, we often find the former option to be much more cost friendly. Since the camper vans merge together travel and accommodation, we won't have to break our bank accounts trying to afford a good holiday.  Campsites can be found all over the country, where you can park your camper and enjoy the surrounding scenery at a fraction of the cost of booking hotel rooms.

So now that we’ve covered the basics of what a holiday on wheels will look like, it’s up to you to decide whether this could be your cup of tea. For those of you who are still interested in holidaying in a camper van, let’s take a look at a few different recreational vehicles that you can pick from and try to understand the minute differences between them.  

Types of Camping Vans in India  

When it comes to categorizing camper vans, the lines between different types can often be blurry. Generally, these vehicles are referred to as RVs or recreational vehicles, and they provide both accommodation as well as transport. However, not all RVs are equipped with the same amenities. In an attempt to clear up any confusion, let’s take a closer look at the minute differences between each.  

• Motorhomes

From spacious interiors and comfy bedding to kitchenettes and washrooms, these vehicles can generously accommodate you and all your pals. Most of the furnishings inside the motorhome are fixed in place, so you needn’t have to worry about things fallen over during your journey. 

Motorhomes are quite popular abroad, however, they are a rare sight in India with only a handful of local manufacturers to be found. A few companies like JCBL and Pinnacle Specialty Vehicles do offer these kinds of recreational vehicles for road trips, but with higher costs as compared to the other types of campers, this option is yet to gain popularity in the country. Another drawback of motorhomes is that you’re required to have a special license to operate them, which means that you may also have to hire a driver for your trip.  

• Camper Vans  

  Camper vans are seen as the smaller option when it comes to RVs. Ordinarily, these vans only serve the purpose of transport and accommodation, without offering amenities such as washrooms or kitchenettes. The storage capacity and seating space in a regular camper van is ideal for short trips with fewer people. As the name suggests, these vehicles are the size of regular vans, which makes it easier to navigate and park but the lack of space means you won't be able to stand up straight comfortably inside one.  

Camper vans are generally the size of normal road vehicles, and hence you rarely require a special license to operate them. Fuel consumption for such vehicles is seen to be lower than that of the larger sized RVs. These types of RVs are generally the most popular option to be seen since the onset of the pandemic.  

• Caravans  

Hitting the middle ground between camper vans and motorhomes, these types of RV’s are generally the size of large trucks and will be fitted with cozy furnishings. These vehicles offer reasonable space in terms of storage as well as accommodation, however, not as lavish and comfortable as a full-on motorhome. One could say that these vehicles are a slightly downgraded version of motorhomes, however, the shrunken size makes it easier to drive as well as park as compared to the motorhomes. 

Depending on the weight and size of the caravan, you may require a special license to operate these kinds of RVs. Compared to motorhomes, caravans consume less fuel, however, more so than camper vans. Caravans are generally easier to find in India, with several service providers all over the country.  

• Trailer homes  

Image Source   Now the main difference between trailer homes and other RVs is that the accommodation space isn't merged with the transport. Trailers are generally hooked onto the back of your own vehicle and dragged along with you, wherever you go. These mobile homes are generally smaller in size when compared to motorhomes or camper vans, but you have the added benefit of being able to detach your trailer whenever required.  

Imagine you’ve reached your campsite but you seem to have forgotten to pick something up along the way. Makes no sense to drag your trailer all the way back to the store to pick it up right? Just simply remove the hooks attaching your trailer to your car and head on your way. Depending on the size of the trailer that’s being attached to your car, the driver may be required to acquire a special license to operate the vehicle.  

Where can I find a camper van?   

Well, if you’ve made it this far, it seems safe to assume that you’re still keen on taking a road trip in one of these recreational vehicles. In that case, let's take a look at some options: 

• Invest in your own camper van 

If road trips are something you’d like to do quite often, then investing in a mobile home could be money well spent for you. One of the benefits of purchasing a camper van would be that you get a vehicle that’s already fitted with the required amenities. There’s no requirement for us to make any modifications to the vehicle. Generally, first-hand camper vans can be rather expensive, with prices starting at around 20 lakhs and upwards.  

If you’re eager to cut down on such costs, there are still several second-hand camper vans up for sale. However, when purchasing a second-hand vehicle, we need to be extra precautious of the condition of both the vehicle as well as the living space to make sure we’re getting the best value for money.  

• Rent out a camper van 

With the recent rise in interest in vans for camping in India, there have been several entrepreneurs who have made it easier for us to rent such a vehicle for short durations. This option is considerably cheaper than purchasing your own camper van and is perfect for people who won't be spending too many days every year going on road trips. The cost of renting a camper van can start from as low as a few thousand rupees per person, and depends on the duration of your journey, distance covered as well as the type of camper van you pick. 

If you aren’t sure if holidaying in a camper van is for you, this would be the best way to find out. Take a short holiday in one, if you’re satisfied you can always come back for more or acquire your own camper van. Large motorhomes might be perfect for long intercity journeys; however, they can't handle the tricky terrains offered in places like the hills of Coorg. Can you turn your car into a camper van?  

Short answer, definitely!  However, you can’t just turn any old vehicle into a camper van and expect it to work. The Delhi-based caravan service, which has been around since 1998, is the brainchild of Sanjay and Bina Saini. Besides Delhi, the caravans are also available for hire in Bengaluru, Bhopal and parts of Madhya Pradesh . Their Club on Wheels is a party caravan with a bar, DJ cabinet, lounge area, a dance floor, smoke room and more, besides the basic features. Where can you go: Motorhome Adventures lets you customise your trips and even change them at the last minute. Here's a caravan adventure unlike the others. Camping Co's outlander trucks Xenon and Xenon Annex come with a rooftop tent that can be attached to the car wherever you decide to camp, under the stars or by a river . Born in Mumbai , this is a joint venture by Motohome and Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC). You can choose between the tourism, corporate and film industry options, each of which brings with it curated add-ons such as open air cinemas, revolving chairs for work meetings and more for a personalised experience. Where you can go: With the starting location as either Mumbai or Pune, you can drive anywhere across India, or park at one of the scenic destinations close by such as Malshej ghat, Bhandardara, Lonavala, Grape Park in Nashik, Ganpatipule and Shirdi. Amenities: These campervans come with a rooftop tent and can accommodate up to four people. They have a mini fridge, basic kitchenette and picnic chairs and table. The luxury campervans can accommodate up to 10 people depending on your choice. Features include:

• Fully equipped kitchen, refrigerator, microwave.
• Toilet, shower, hot and cold water.
• AC, smart TV with speaker system, cameras and Wi-Fi.

India campervan guide

India has great potential for traveling with your own campervan.  It’s a big country though, and with so much to see you’ll need plenty of time, at least a few months, preferable 6 months.  Roads vary greatly in quality, but are generally poor.  Driving standards are very low, and you’ll need time to adjust confidently.  There are no established campsites, but many safe campgrounds where you can camp for free. Costs are cheap, so guesthouses are also a consideration. You’re unlikely to see any corruption as a tourist. Buying a vehicle has a few hassles.

Roads in India vary greatly.  Between major cities there are some, and increasingly more, good quality, dual-lane, tarmac roads.  These are often short though, returning to single-lane tarmac or dirt.  You’ll find many dirt lanes around smaller destinations.  Newer, good quality roads are often toll roads, but the charge is small (about US$1). 

Driving in India

Driving in India is like most developing countries.  Driver use their horns to indicate their presence, particularity when about to overtake or when overtaking.  Road safety knowledge is not so good, and you’ll find many vehicles overtaking each other regularly.  Overtaking on blind bends is common.

Larger vehicles such as trucks and buses often push motorcycles to the side, and often, off the road.  It’s better to get out of their way.

Because of the roads and regular traffic jams near big cities, expect to cover 200km per day,  more if you drive throughout the day.  Early starts in cities avoid a lot of traffic.

Tips for driving in India

• At road tolls ask to see the recipet before you pay.  The prices are often doubled for tourists.
• There are many unofficial tolls. If there is no receipt and no official, drive on.
• Early starts are the best way to avoid traffic when leaving cities.
• Ask if you get lost.
• Pay tuk tuk drivers to guide you to your hotels in big cities.
• Overtaking on blind bends is a favorite pastime of all India drivers. 
• Pot holes and other obstacles pose some danger. 
• You’ll often find wheat on the road, as villagers use the passing vehicles to thrash it.
• You’ll regularly find cows wandering on the roads.  As well as dangerous to your vehicle, these holy animals will get you in trouble if you don’t respect them.

Finding your way about

There are a few road signs around.  Often in English and Hindi, sometime just the later.  Many junctions don’t have any signs, but there is almost always someone arround who you can ask.  Never ask a leading question though, such as ‘Is this the road for Delhi?’, as you may get a ‘Yes’ when in fact it isn’t.  This is simply because people don’t know and they don’t want to disappoint, or perhaps ‘yes’ is the only English they know.  It’s much better to simply ask ‘Delhi?’ and judge the responses you get.

Finding your way around cities is not easy.  Almost certainly the best option is to get GPS, or, at the city edge approach a tuk tuk driver.  Offer them INR50 to take you to your destination.  Give them the money when you get there, and you can clearly see your destination.

Almost everything in India is made in India, and there are few exception to their vehicles.  In cities almost all vehicles are tuk tuks (auto rickshaws), small cars and motorbikes.  On the main roads you’ll find trucks, buses and the occasional motorbike and small car.

Almost all cars are Maruti Suzuki vehicles (made in India).  Most are small Zen cars (about 800cc) and there are a few bigger models.  Costs are about INR300,000+ (US$7,500+) for a new small car, and half that for  used vehicles.    There are a few Hondas around.

Maruti Suzuki also make small vans.  These cost about INR300,000 (US$7,500+) brand new, and about half that used.  They are popular as taxi vehicles.  Whilst not as comfortable as car for long distance driving, they do allow more storage, and with a little work you could create a simple bed in the back for emergency sleeping quarters.

Motorbike are very popular in India and a good way for traveling on your own.  There are several India makes, including Baja, TVS and the Enfield, which is still made in India.  There are also several Japanese makes around.  Prices start from INR30,000 for a simple 125cc, which is normally big enough, and just a little more for bigger bikes.  There are lots of used bikes around, but check them very carefully.

Other vehicles

There are some Asia 4WD vehicles which would make for a comfortable drive and sleeping in the back, but they are limited in numbers and expensive.  Old buses (made by TATA) can be found, but unless you want to a sizeable conversion and live in it, it’s probably not worth it.  If you want to do something really different try a tuk tuk, but their are not so comfortable for long trips.

Buying a vehicle in India

Tourists can buy vehicles in India.  The paperwork takes 7 – 10 days.  A signed affidavit from a magistrate is required, which a dealer can arrange for you.  Be sure to check the regulations about selling the vehicle.  Buy-back schemes are a good idea if you are returning to your start point.

Parking in cities such as Delhi is a problem, so find a guesthouse, away from the center that has good parking, and use taxis to get around.  In Mumbai, the Colaba district has several leafy streets where vehicles should be find.

In rural areas you’ll have no problems parking, but not always right in front of your guesthouse.  Bigger hotels almost always have secure parking.

There are no western style campsites in India.  You can camp in most areas where you are not causing damage or a nusiance.  But it’s always worth checking. 

Orcha has a campground with stunning views of the castles.  A little army of locals with come over to say hello and get anything you might need.

India is generally a safe country.  The roads can be dangerous, but with care you should have no problems.  Sleeping in a vehicle should also attract no problems.  Hindus are generally very trustworthy as they believe strongly in karma.  However they are bad people everywhere in the world, and you should always take care.

Before and after

It is possible to drive a vehicle into and out of Nepal, which is a wonderful country and worthy of a visit. 

No vehicles can pass between India and Pakistan, and I suspect Bangladesh also.

Shipping your own vehicle to or from India is possible, with a bit of paperwork.

I see a lot of information is dated now. Traffic has gone up, highways are now quite good and there is a large variety of vehicles. You could buy an Isuzu bus complete with a washroom and kitchenette. India is a welcoming country and everybody cooperates with tourists but you still need to take general precautions like anywhere in the world. happy camping. Would I have to register a C form to camp in my camper van? Hello, I have a question. You might know that one is requested to fill in a C form when staying at Indian guesthouses and hotels, I think it’s part of Indian security. Hotels so get fined if they have guests that haven’t filled out C forms.

No matter what type of camper van you choose for your journey, you should always check if the vehicle is approved by the RTO. When converting your vehicle into a caravan, check if the base vehicle is not discontinued by the manufacturer, if so then the caravan won’t be approved by the RTO. Tata Xenon and Nissan Evalia are two examples of such vehicles. When purchasing a pre-built van, you need to check and verify all of the vehicle’s legal documentation.

There are only two categories of vehicle that fit into making a camper van and they are minivans & SUV’s. To build a convertible camper van, you should first know every detail about the base vehicle so as to add & modify more parts to the vehicle. The Maruti Eeco debuted in India in 2010 and is the best suited caravan in this category. The multipurpose van has recently celebrated ten years on the domestic market. The company has sold more than 7 lakh units of eeco. Maruti Suzuki has made various changes to the Eeco over the years. It is now offered in a variety of models, including CNG. Customers can choose between a 5-seater and a 7-seater model based on their needs. The following are some of the van’s primary features:

The Tata Yodha comes with a big 6 ft box and has a 2.2-liter four-cylinder DI diesel engine that outputs 100 PS of maximum power and 250 Nm of peak torque. Yodha also comes with a 4*4 that is ideal for off roads For transmission, it is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox in both rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive options. All models get a leaf spring suspension and steel wheels all around. Thanks to its power and payload capacity, the Updated Tata Yodha Pickup Truck is well-suited for Camper vans.

Category 3 : 10 – 15 Lakhs 

Force traveller.

Build Cost: 3 to 4L

Force Traveller is a popular choice among people for using it as caravans due to its huge space that can be used for giving spaces to washroom, kitchen & bed. It is easily suited for at least 3 – 4 peoples that comes with mercedes derived engine. he extra space and ground clearance make this a great full-size campervan option. 

The Force Traveller 3700 Super is a 12 to 17 Seater mover van with 12+D and 17+D seating capacities. Force Traveller has a 2596 cc engine that produces 115 HP and 350 Nm of torque. The diesel engine in this  van complies with BS6 emission standards. The power transmission gearbox  is a 5 speed (5F+1R).
