Since the 1800s Hot Springs has been known for the relaxing and restorative thermal waters of its 47 springs. This spa resort town, population 36,000, in southwestern Arkansas has earned a reputation as the state's top vacation spot. Along with a thriving spa-based industry, the city is a popular shopping, dining, arts, music and outdoor adventure destination.

The centerpiece of the city is downtown where Bathhouse Row, a section of historic bathhouses and a part of the Hot Springs National Park, mixes with art galleries, shops and restaurants. Visitors go on foot from shop to shop and can tour historic Fordyce Bathhouse or get pampered at a spa. A thriving artistic and musical community adds an eclectic feel to the city.

Other popular activities include thoroughbred racing from January to April at Oaklawn, theme- and water-park rides at Magic Springs Theme Park and Crystal Falls Water Park and golfing. A short drive away, in Murfreesboro, visitors at Crater of Diamonds State Park can dig for diamonds and keep what they find.

The nearby Diamond Lakes; Ouachita, DeGray, Greeson, Hamilton and Catherine offer water sport and fishing opportunities to Hot Springs visitors. Located just south of Hot Springs, Lake Hamilton is a popular resort and water sports venue. Lake Catherine offers horseback riding and picnicking. Houseboat rentals are available on lakes Ouachita, Greeson, and DeGray.

The Ouachita National Forest and the Ouachita, Caddo and Cossatot rivers are all nearby. They offer camping, fishing, canoeing, hiking and scenic drives.

Hot Springs is 55 miles southwest of Little Rock and is accessible via State Highways 5 and 7 and U.S. Highways 70 and 270. Lodging is plentiful in Hot Springs and around the Diamond Lakes.

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Hot Springs, Arkansas

This small Arkansas city has one of the best resorts in the South — and it’s on the path of the 2024 solar eclipse.

hot springs arkansas tourism guide

Best Hotels and Resorts in Hot Springs

Best things to do in hot springs, best shopping in hot springs, best restaurants in hot springs, best time to visit hot springs, how to get there, how to get around.

On Monday, April 8, 2024, umbraphiles across the country will make their way to Hot Springs National Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas. It’s one of the two official national parks — Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley is the other — that will be within the total solar eclipse's path of totality. While this astronomical event hasn’t happened in the state since 1918 and won’t occur again until 2045, it’s far from the only draw to Hot Springs.

As the name suggests, Hot Springs is home to dozens of thermal springs that flow from the Ouachita Mountains. In 1832, these natural features were designated as the first federal reservation for recreation, though archeologists have found evidence that Native Americans have lived in the area, and Arkansas as a whole, millennia before the arrival of Western settlers. It’s thought that they used the waters for their healing powers, a practice that continues to this day. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, Hot Springs transformed from a frontier town into a spa destination known for its eight Victorian-style bathhouses along Bathhouse Row . The thermal waters are also part of the reason Hot Springs boasts the title of the “birthplace” of baseball spring training; many Major League teams sent their players (Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, and Hank Aaron among them) to Hot Springs to take advantage of the water’s curative properties ahead of the season.

Modern-day Hot Springs embraces its history and natural resources, but it also continues to evolve and expand. Katelyn McMurry, the managing director of The Reserve at Hot Springs , describes Hot Springs as a “quirky small town full of history” as well as “a sportsman’s paradise with a backdrop of the Ouachita Mountains accented with beautiful lakes along with biking and hiking trails galore.” Rose Schweikhart, the owner of Superior Bathhouse Brewery , adds that “there is always something fun going on,” whether it’s Spa-Con , the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival , The Güdrun - Northwoods Mountain Biking Festival , Bridge St. Live concerts , or the World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade .

The Reserve at Hot Springs

Opened in the summer of 2021, The Reserve at Hot Springs is relatively new to the scene, but it quickly became one of T+L readers’ favorite resorts in the South , as voted in the World’s Best Awards . Formerly a mansion, the 12-room property features “beautiful décor, plenty of antiques, and one-of-a-kind landscaping,” according to Chef Joshua Garland of Dons Southern Social .

Intimate, historic, and conveniently located, Hotel Hale certainly tops the list of the best places to stay in Hot Springs. Mineral water is pumped into each of the nine suites — all of which have their own soaking tubs. The building itself (formerly known as the Hale Bathhouse) is the oldest structure on Bathhouse Row, with origins dating back to 1892.

The Waters Hot Springs, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

Travelers who have their hearts set on downtown accommodations can opt for The Waters Hot Springs, Tapestry Collection by Hilton . The property is directly across from Bathhouse Row and just a five-minute walk to Hot Springs National Park.

Lookout Point Lakeside Inn

Self-described as “an oasis for romance and well-being, indulgence, and luxury,” Lookout Point Lakeside Inn takes relaxation seriously. No matter which room you book, you’ll get a gorgeous view of Lake Hamilton, room service breakfast, and access to the outdoor fire pit and patio.

Bathe in the thermal waters.

If you’re making your way to this part of the country, you’ll definitely want to “bathe in the thermal springs to relax and experience the history of Bathhouse Row,” says McMurry. While visitors can’t soak in the springs outdoors, they can head to Buckstaff Bathhouse and Quapaw Baths and Spa for some relaxation. Schweikhart also recommends touring the Fordyce Bathhouse , the park’s museum and visitor center.  “The museum gives visitors a chance to see a bathhouse setup as things were in the heyday of bathing in the Spa City, but [it] also provides accurate historical information on important local topics like civil rights and local Native American tribes,” she says.

Go for a hike.

“For the more outdoorsy visitors, I always recommend hiking our myriad trails… which range in difficulty from doable-in-flip-flops to a whole-day, 13-mile loop that circles the entire valley with spectacular views,” says Schweikhart. Chef Garland also suggests visitors stretch their legs on a hike, with Cedar Glades Park and Lake Catherine being his favorite spots.

Get out on the water.

Bathhouse Row isn’t the only water-related activity in Hot Springs. “Rent a boat and go to Lake Hamilton, and spend the day riding around and going to any of the lakefront restaurants, [like] Sam’s Pizza Pub and Bubba Brew’s ,” says Chef Garland. Or, head to Arkansas’ largest lake, Lake Ouachita, and swim in what McMurry describes as “crystal-clear” water.

Attend a horse race at Oaklawn.

Since 1905, Hot Springs has hosted thoroughbred racing at Oaklawn. The 68-day season runs annually from December through early May, and visitors can check the schedule and book tickets online .

Art Galleries

“Hot Springs has many talented local artists,” says McMurry, who recommends shopping at Justus Fine Art Galler y and Legacy Fine Art Gallery . If you’re in town on the first Friday of the month, you can attend the Gallery Walk , where many of Hot Springs’ studios and galleries are open late for browsing new and existing exhibitions.

Thrift and Antique Shopping

“I am a huge fan of antiques and thrift shopping, and the adventurous shopper can spend an entire day hunting for treasures at the 20-plus vintage, consignment, thrift, and antique shops all within a 5-mile radius,” says Schweikhart. Stops to add to your itinerary include The Retro Fit , The Vintage Ranch , Bath House Row Antiques , and Iron Crow Antiques .

Bathhouse Soapery

For a useful Hot Springs souvenir or thoughtful gift, consider Bathhouse Soapery , which Schweikhart says makes “amazing soaps and cosmetics.” Located across from Bathhouse Row, the flagship store has a variety of products, including whipped soap and soap slices.

Dons Southern Social

McMurry says Dons Southern Social , a modern-day speakeasy, offers a “unique menu and a lively ambiance.” Reservations are highly encouraged, and when you book, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to find the entrance as well as the password you’ll need to enter.

Superior Bathhouse Brewery

“We are the only brewery in the world that makes our product with thermal spring water,” says Schweikhart. Along with 18 craft beers — brewed with the aforementioned special ingredient — Superior Bathhouse Brewery has a food menu full of classics, like burgers, soft pretzels, and chicken tenders. As a bonus, travelers can boast that they’ve been to the only brewery in a national park.

McClard’s Bar-B-Q Restaurant

McClard’s has been serving up barbeque since 1928 — and it’s remained a family-owned business ever since. Load up on their famous hickory-smoked beef, pork, and ribs alongside coleslaw, hand-rolled hot tamales, and spicy barbeque beans.

DeLuca’s Pizzeria

“The best pizza in the state, or even the South, is at Deluca’s ,” says Chef Garland. The 18-inch pies are all made with homemade dough and cooked in a 725-degree brick oven. Pizza-craving travelers should note, however, that Deluca’s is only open Thursday through Sunday, so plan your trip accordingly.

The Ohio Club

If you like history and live music, keep a night free for The Ohio Club . The so-called “oldest bar in Arkansas” is known to have been frequented by both gangsters and baseball players in the early 1900s; Al Capone and Bugsy Segel are most often associated with the establishment. The Ohio Club first opened in 1905, turned into a speakeasy during Prohibition, and continues to host live music Thursday through Monday.

Daniel Haynes/Getty Images

“The best time of year to visit Hot Springs would be the end of the race season in April through July,” says Chef Garland. It won’t be as crowded, and “there are so many outdoor activities you can do,” he adds. McMurry also says early spring and late October are good times to travel to Hot Springs if you want to see the blooming cherry blossoms or colorful foliage.

If you’re flying into Hot Springs, you have two options: Little Rock’s Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (LIT) or Hot Springs Memorial Field Airport (HOT). Southern Airways Express is the only airline that serves the latter, but Allegiant, Delta, American Airlines, Southwest, United, and Frontier all fly in and out of Little Rock.

You’ll need a car to navigate most of Hot Springs, although downtown — and particularly Bathhouse Row — is very walkable. Uber and Lyft rides are also available.

Hot Springs National Park

The Hot Springs National Park is a small, but interesting National Park. It is only 5,400 acres and was originally created to preserve the thermal waters.

In fact, it was federally preserved 40 years before Yellowstone! This little tidbit of information causes some people to say that this was the FIRST national park!

The main attractions are the historic bathhouses, but there are also several miles of hiking trails in the surrounding forests.

We suggest that you start your tour of the park with the Fordyce Bathhouse . This is now the park visitor center. It is here that you can take a ranger led tour and learn all about the bathhouses, the thermal waters and the way that they were used to help people to heal from their maladies.

Spas in Hot Springs

From the very beginning of history Hot Springs was a spa town. The Indians called it Valley of the Vapors and considered it to be a sacred place of healing.

There were settlers and guests coming as early as 1810. However, it became a true resort towards the end of the 1800’s. Doctors would even prescribe the thermal baths as treatment.

Today, two of the old bathhouses still operate as places to soak in the thermal waters. The Buckstaff Bathhouse is the more traditional of the two while the Quapaw Bathhouse has more modern spa treatments along with its soaking pools.

In addition to the bathhouses you can even stay at the Hale Hotel which was once the Hale bathhouse. It has been converted into 9 luxury suites. In these rooms you will have a large soaking tub that you can fill with the hot mineral water and steep to your heart’s content.

Besides the bathhouses the Arlington Resort hotel has a spa.

In addition to the spas named above, you will find many other amazing spas in town. Hot Springs really does deserve its nickname of Spa City. Click the button below to learn more about our favorite spas in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Although it is a small town Hot Springs is definitely a foodie paradise. You will have so many great choices here from a fine steak dinner, to an iconic barbecue restaurant, to the best pizza this side of New York City.

Seriously, there is good food in this town.

One of our favorite places to recommend is DeLuca’s Pizzeria . It is my favorite pizza in the state. If you do go to DeLuca’s you will want to call in advance to reserve your pizza crust. They are that good and busy.

Don’s Southern Social is one of the newest places in town. (as of August 2023) and it is a delight. This is a restaurant with the vibe of a hidden speakeasy. We love it!

We have a list of all of our favorite restaurants in Hot Springs. Be sure and check it out by clicking the button below!

Where to Have a Drink in Hot Springs

If you look into the history of Hot Springs you will discover that it was once a gambling and drinking town frequented by high profile gangsters. During prohibition illegal speakeasies proliferated and illegal moonshine continued to be produced and sold.

These days there is still gambling and drinking in Hot Springs…legal gambling and drinking.

You might want to have a drink at the Ohio Club which is the oldest continually open bar in Arkansas. Yes, it never closed, even during prohibition. You have to got to stop in and see their gorgeous bar!

My favorite is the Superior Bathhouse Brewery which also happens to be the ONLY brewery in the US that is situated in a National Park.

There are several more places in town to have a beer or a nice cocktail. Check out this list of our favorites!

Many people come to the area to enjoy one of the amazing lakes that are near Hot Springs . There are 5 lakes in the area called the Diamond Lakes.

State Parks Near Hot Springs

Lake Catherine State Park is only about 10 minutes from town and is known for camping and fishing. It also has a couple of pretty hiking trails .

Lake Ouachita State Park is located on the largest, cleanest, and, in my opinion the most beautiful of all of the Arkansas lakes .

DeGray Lake Resort State Park is the only resort state park in Arkansas. It has a nice lodge as well as a championship golf course and SO many amenities.

Go Digging For Quartz

The Ouachita mountains surrounding Hot Springs are home to some of the largest and finest deposits of quartz crystals in the world! There are several locations around Hot Springs, especially in the small town of Mt. Ida, where you can actually dig for your own crystals.

The Ron Coleman mine is a favorite as is the Wegner Quartz Crystal mine . Be sure and check the websites before you go as some require you to bring your own digging equipment and others have specific times to take you to the fields.

Garvan Woodland Gardens

Garvan Gardens are gorgeous year round.

However, this botanical garden is never more incredible than in the spring when tens of thousands of tulips are blooming. They also have an incredible light display in December.

If you visit Garvan Gardens be sure and also go to Anthony Chapel which is on the property.

History of Hot Springs, Arkansas

Hot Springs has a history that is both fascinating and sordid. What started as a sacred place for the American Indians became a hot bed for gambling and gangsters like Al Capone and Lucky Luciano.

After this era, the town later fell into disrepair and disregard and then came back to life.

You can learn more about the gangster history of Hot Springs at the Gangster Museum of America. This is a small museum but SO interesting and will give you a better understanding of this fascinating time period in Hot Springs.

We also have an entire post about the history of Hot Springs where you can learn even more about it!

Gambling in Hot Springs, Arkansas

As you just read, Hot Springs has a long history of illegal gambling. You can still gamble in town today…but…legally!

The Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort not only is a great place to stay, but it also offers casino gambling, horse racing during the season, as well as great bars and delicious restaurants.

Casino gambling is available year round but check the schedule for horse racing.

Hot Springs National Park: The Complete Guide

Things to do.

  • Best Hikes & Trails

Where to Camp

Where to stay nearby, how to get there, accessibility, tips for your visit, hot springs national park.

While most national parks span hundreds of miles and feel far removed from cities and a fast-paced lifestyle, Hot Springs National Park challenges the status quo. The smallest of the U.S. National Parks—at 5,550 acres—Hot Springs National Park borders the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, a town that's turned a profit from tapping into the park’s main resource—mineral-rich waters.

Hot Springs National Park is actually “the oldest park in the national park system,” as the park existed as a special reservation (thanks to President Andrew Jackson) 40 years before Yellowstone became the nation's first national park. The lands were settled by Native American tribes who believed in the water's natural healing powers. Then, the federal land was eventually designated a national park in 1921.

Today, this urban park protects eight historic bathhouses along Bathhouse Row and is surrounded by shops, restaurants, and other attractions. The park boasts a network of hiking trails, some of which give you a panoramic view of the city, and only one campground, should you want to rough it after a long soak.

Hot Springs National Park is unlike many of the nation's wondrous parks, but just because it lies within city limits doesn't mean there's a shortage of things to do. This park boasts both indoor and outdoor activities to keep families busy for a day or weekend outing.

Be sure to tour the elegant buildings lining Central Avenue in the town of Hot Springs. The four city blocks of Bathhouse Row take you by Lamar, Buckstaff, Ozark, Quapaw, Fordyce, Maurice, Hale, and Superior bathhouses. The bathhouses offer a step back in time, with historic renderings and architecture, some house local businesses, and only two, Buckstaff and Quapaw, offer privately-operated spa and bathing services.

Along this road, you can also check out the giant boulder, DeSoto Rock. It commemorates the Native Americans who first settled the area, as well as the explorer Hernando De Soto, the first European to bathe in the waters of the hot springs in 1541.

Hot Water Cascade, located on the hillside at Arlington Lawn, is the largest visible spring in the park. This 4,000-year-old spring gurgles with water that is heated deep within the earth and then seeps out through faults in the rocks. Check out the rare blue-green algae that thrive in the hot water here.

Best Hikes & Trails

Many of the hikes in Hot Springs National Park are short and sweet, causing real enthusiasts to scoff at their abbreviated length. However, there are a few trails worthy of venturing out onto, as you can see the sites, and then combine them with other trails for a longer outing.

  • Gulpha Gorge: This quick 1.2-mile round-trip walk takes you through the traditional terrain of this park. Surrounding woodlands are rich in dogwood and redbud trees, wildflowers, and several species of birds.
  • Hot Springs Mountain Trail : This 3.3-mile urban trail is moderately trafficked and used by hikers, walkers, and joggers, as it provides some after-work exercise with its 672 feet of elevation gain. Access this trail via Stephen’s Balustrade (Grand Promenade) behind the Fordyce Bathhouse.
  • Goat Rock Trail: Goat Rock Trail offers a 2.4-mile casual jaunt through forests and wildflowers to Goat Rock Overlook. A sign at the end leads you to stone steps that reach the summit and its sweeping views.
  • Tufa Terrace Trail: This .2-mile trail is not as much of a hike as it is a spectacle of springs that aren’t well-publicized. The trail starts above the Grande Promenade and is named after the massive tufa (calcium carbonate) deposits seen around it, created by the spring.
  • Sunset Trail: One of the most demanding trails in the park (and maybe the only one), this 13-mile loop is for expert hikers only, taking you up 2,372 feet in elevation. This 6-hour jaunt offers a nice opportunity to connect with nature. Make sure to bring plenty of water, food, and sunscreen.

Gulpha Gorge Campground , the only campground in the park, represents the epitome of urban camping. There's just enough forest to make it feel like you're out of town, while still having city amenities due to its close proximity. This campground accommodates both tent and RV campers and each site comes equipped with a picnic table, pedestal grill, and water access. On-site restrooms are available, but there are no showers. Gulpha Gorge Campground remains open year-round and is filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are not accepted.

There are many hotels, motels, and inns located near Hot Springs National Park. Most of them cater to park visitors in search of the city's healing hot water resource. If hotels aren't your thing, you can also book a stay in a private residence, many of which are listed for rent on Airbnb .

  • The 1890 Williams House Inn is a unique place to stay. The historic Victorian-style main house offers six luxury guest rooms and the carriage house offers three. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I visited Hot Springs in Arkansas. I knew it was a national park, and there were hot springs (duh). I was looking forward to a bathhouse experience, but other than that, my knowledge was limited. Arkansas wasn’t exactly on my radar for vacations, but I think Hot Springs should be on everyone’s list of places to visit. Not only does it have a national park, but it boasts a rich history complete with gangsters, baseball, and Hollywood, and it was the town where President Bill Clinton grew up.  The surrounding area provides several activities to fill your visit, from stunning gardens to quartz mines. Whether you are heading there for a quick couples getaway or a family vacation, it has something for everyone.

Several major airlines offer service to Little Rock, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. Southern Airways Express is the only airline currently serving HOT, with daily nonstop flights to/from Dallas and Memphis.

Taking a Train to Hot Springs

Amtrak’s Texas Eagle route does not stop directly in Hot Springs. However, it does stop in Malvern, Arkansas, about 20 miles north of Hot Springs. From Malvern, you can take a taxi or rideshare service to Hot Springs.

Where to Stay in Hot Springs

Thanks to its status as a resort town and vacation destination, there are several accommodations to choose from in Hot Springs, from luxury to budget and even more unique.

Budget Choice – Dame Fortune’s Cottage Court

Cottage Court

A traditional “motor lodge,” Dame Fortune’s Cottage Court was recently renovated to create a chic, retro, affordable motel. You won’t have a ton of space, but the space you do have is clean and efficient. Rooms range from deluxe King to petite Queen and have a coffee machine, TV, and WiFi. Located close to downtown, it’s convenient for your Hot Springs stay.

Traditional Bed and Breakfast Choice – Hilltop Manor Bed and Breakfast

Hilltop Manor Bed and Breakfast

This upscale bed and breakfast provides a comfortable stay just minutes from the national park. Cozy up after a day at the bathhouse by a gas fireplace, or enjoy a soak in your private jacuzzi. There is off-street parking, coffee, tea, water, and soda are complimentary, and you’ll love the large daily breakfast served.

Unique Choice – In the Trees

The Woodcutter Cabin

This tree-house mountain resort features private hot tubs and decks among the trees, full kitchens, fire pits, and more- all within the tops of the trees in the Ouachita Mountains. There are hiking trails on-site, as well as access to the Northwoods mountain biking trails, and e-bikes are available to rent.

Best for Couples – Lookout Point Lakeside Inn

Lookout Point Lakeside Inn

This Inn is outside the center of Hot Springs and offers a secluded, boutique stay. With just twelve rooms and the amenities of a large full-service hotel, it’s the perfect place to stay for couples. A two-course breakfast is included with your stay, as are non-motorized watercraft, perfect for use on Lake Hamilton, from the Inn’s private dock. Each room has a deck or terrace overlooking the lake, and three of the rooms are pet-friendly.

Historic Choice – The Arlington

Arlington Resort Hotel and Spa

You will step into history with a stay at the Arlington- Al Capone used to rent out the entire fourth floor when he stayed here, and reportedly, the hat shop in the hotel offered access to an underground tunnel that brought him across the street without being seen. Currently undergoing renovations, it offers suites and regular hotel rooms. There is an onsite restaurant, bar, and spa. All of this is just steps away from the National Park and downtown Hot Springs.

Things to Do in Hot Springs

Hot Springs is more than just a National Park- and while that is certainly a must-see, there are a variety of other attractions for every interest.

Hot Springs National Park

The smallest National Park in the country, Hot Springs National Park, is unique in its shape, as it has a city in the middle of it, making it an O shape. Despite being only 5550 acres, there are several hiking trails, biking, fishing, and forty-seven hot springs to explore. There is one campground, one hotel within the national park, and the country’s only brewery within a national park, Superior Brewing, located in an old bath house.

Bathhouse Row in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

Two bathhouses are still in operation, both located in the national park- Quapaw and Buckstaff . Buckstaff offers a traditional bathhouse experience, while Quapaw has thermal pools and private baths as well as modern spa treatments. Whittington Park Trail and The Grand Promenade are fully accessible.

Garvan Woodland Gardens

Garvan Woodland Gardens

Garvan Woodland Gardens are 210 acres of gorgeous woods and gardens dotted with stunning architecture to blend in with the trees. These include the Anthony Chapel, a stunning structure designed by Maurice Jennings and David McKee, and an awe-inspiring four-level treehouse built in 2018. Kids will love exploring and climbing, and adults can savor the wildflowers and soak in the lake on a four-and-a-half-mile boardwalk. Several trails around the gardens are ADA-compliant, making them accessible to all.

Mine for Crystals at Avant Mining

Full disclosure: I did this activity, and I thought that I would need a hard hat and be riding in a mining train- the entire time I was digging, I was singing “Dig Dig Dig” from Snow White- it is NOT like that at all. Check-in at the entrance and get tools to help you dig for mines. The talented workers of the mine have already loosened the earth so you can dig for mines, so the hardest work is already done. They offer different packages, from $25/day for public mining or anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000/day for private digging. You can expect to find crystals that match the amount that you pay.

Spend the Day on A Lake

Ouachita Kayak Tours

The three main lakes in Hot Springs – Lake Hamilton, Lake Ouachita, and Lake Catherine, all offer adventure-filled activities for those looking for a more active day. You can rent a boat , go on a guided kayak tour , fish, or simply wade or take a swim.

Where to Eat in Hot Springs

Hot Springs has a variety of restaurants, cafes, and bars to choose from during your visit.

Best for a Beer – Superior Bathhouse Brewing

Superior Bath House Brewery

The only brewery within any national park, Superior Batthouse has a pub-like menu and an extensive beer list – all brewed right in the backroom of the former superior bathhouse. Beers include a chocolate graham cracker porter, a hazy IPA, and, for non-beer drinkers, a ginger seltzer. The patio is large and features a smaller menu than indoors, but just as delicious.

Best for Lunch – Kollective Coffee and Tea

Kollective Coffee in a snow storm

Enjoy organic, local, and fresh products at Kollective Coffee and Tea. Try a “grown-up grilled cheese,” detox salad, or a special like a falafel wrap (which was the special the day I was there and was absolutely amazing). You can’t miss their homemade hummus, either. Wash it all down with a pour-over coffee or organic tea.

Best Pizza – DeLuca

Enjoy a piece of New York City in Hot Springs. Owner Anthony Valinoti found himself in Europe after his parents died within days of each other to try to reset, and it was during his stay in Italy that he realized traditional pizza was his calling. He learned how to cook from his Italian host, and then DeLuca’s Pizzeria was born. Enjoy delicious pizza, salads, and drinks.

Best Breakfast – Best Cafe

Part of the Historic Best Court hotel (where Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio stayed when visiting Hot Springs), Best Cafe offers creme brulee French toast, a whipped yogurt bowl, Confit Pork Belly Skillet Hash, creamy gouda grits, and much, much more. It is open to the public, not just to guests staying at the hotel.

Best Traditional Experience – Pancake Shop

A Hot Springs staple since 1940, the Pancake Shop delivers a traditional dining experience, complete with bottomless cups of coffee served in a simple ceramic mug. Choose from buttermilk, apple, banana, chocolate chip, and buckwheat pancakes, eggs, cereals, breakfast meats, and juices. Open daily from 6 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and the menu is strictly breakfast.

Best for Live Music – The Ohio Club

Arkansas’ oldest bar, the Ohio Club, was a speakeasy during prohibition, turning its facade to the Ohio Cigar Club, and those in the know knew to go to the back to gain entrance to the bar.  Post-prohibition, It is said to have been frequented by notorious gangsters like Al Capone, Bugsy Siegel, and Lucky Luciano, as well as local legends and major league baseball players who trained in Hot Springs during the early 1900s. Mae West performed here in the mid-1930s.  The club features live music seven nights a week, focusing on blues, jazz, and classic rock.

Best Times To Visit Hot Springs, AR

The best time to visit Hot Springs is August to October and February to April. Many of the attractions in and around Hot Springs revolve around the water, so travelers will be most comfortable visiting during the warmer months, when drying off won't immediately induce shivering. Still, given that Arkansas is located in the balmy south, there are several acceptable months to plan a trip. Subsequently, the shoulder seasons are the best time to visit, as travelers can experience the dual pleasures of saving money and basking in the sun.
