Day 1: Board VSOE in Paris

Your private driver meets you at your hotel and transfers you to the station today for a mid-afternoon departure.

Board the gleaming blue and gold carriages of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express at Paris’ Gare de l’Est station. After being greeted by your personal steward, settle into your private cabin. Later, enjoy a delicious gourmet dinner in one of the beautiful restaurant cars and perhaps linger in the bar car before retiring to your cabin for the night.

Day 2: Hungary

Relax and enjoy the sublime scenery as the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express travels into Hungary. Continental breakfast is served in your cabin, and lunch will be taken in one of the opulent dining cars.

On arrival in Budapest, your local guides are waiting to escort you by coach to a river boat for a short, scenic cruise on the Danube.

Afterwards, check in at your hotel, where there’s time to refresh before heading out to the Museum of Fine Arts for a lavish, private dinner. Dress code: smart elegant.

Day 3: Budapest

After breakfast at your hotel, the day starts with a guided tour of the Hungarian Parliament Building, which was famously inspired by London’s Houses of Parliament.

Reboard the train in the late morning and enjoy lunch as you glide through the picturesque countryside. In the evening, head to Bar Car ‘3674’ for enticing cocktails and charismatic conversations. Linger over a delectable dinner as the train travels towards Romania.

Day 4: Peles Castle; Bucharest

Savor continental breakfast in your cabin as the train glides into Romania and approaches the mountain town of Sinaia. Alight to board a coach for the short journey to Peles Castle, the fairy- tale palace built by Romania’s King Carol as his summer retreat. The very first Orient Express passengers visited this beautiful residence in October 1883, at the King’s personal invitation. We recommend comfortable shoes and a sweater for your visit.

Rejoin the train and continue towards Bucharest, enjoying a delicious brunch on the way.

On arrival in the Romanian capital, our local guides are on hand to escort you to your hotel. Later, prepare for an enchanting dinner with musical entertainment at a private venue. Dress code: smart casual.

Day 5: Bulgaria

This morning, rejoin the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express as the train travels south across the Danube and into Bulgaria. After another fabulous lunch on board, this afternoon a stop is made at the delightful seaside resort of Varna on the Black Sea coast, where you alight for an aperitif on a private estate.

An unforgettable dinner is served as the train crosses the ancient Thracian Plain. Celebrate your last night on board the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express  with a drink in the bar car while enjoying the resident pianist.

Day 6: Istanbul

Continental breakfast is served in the comfort of your cabin as the train approaches Turkey. A stop is made at the border crossing point of Kapikule for customs formalities. After a special Turkish-inspired lunch on board, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express arrives in Istanbul at the end of a fascinating and unique journey across seven countries and cultures.

Day 1: Istanbul

Late afternoon, step aboard the gleaming blue and gold carriages of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express as the train departs Istanbul. Dinner is a sumptuous affair, prepared on board by our skilled chefs and served in one of the beautifully restored dining cars. Afterwards linger in the Bar Car, listening to the pianist play the baby grand, before retiring for the night.

Day 2: Bucharest

Begin the day with continental breakfast served in your cabin as the train winds its way through Bulgaria and into Romania. Soak up the scenery rolling by your window as you enjoy a delicious lunch in the dining car.

Soon afterwards the train arrives in Bucharest. Transfer to your Bucharest hotel for a one-night stay.

There’s time to refresh before heading out to a private venue to indulge in a lavish Romanian dinner with musical entertainment — always a highlight of the journey. Dress code: smart casual.

Day 3: Peles Castle

This morning rejoin the train and relax over lunch in one of the dining cars as the train journeys towards the mountain town of Sinaia.

There, board a coach for the short journey to Peles Castle, the Neo-Renaissance palace built by King Carol as his summer retreat. You’re following in historic footsteps: the inaugural Orient Express passengers visited the castle at the King’s personal invitation in October 1883.

Return to the train in the late afternoon for a leisurely journey towards Hungary. A delectable dinner and captivating night await.

Day 4: Budapest

On arrival in Budapest, enjoy a short orientation coach ride through the city followed by a panoramic cruise along the Danube, soaking up the city’s graceful architecture and timeless beauty. A lunch of Hungarian specialities is served before you are escorted to your hotel.

In the afternoon, explore the capital at leisure. Beguiling highlights include imposing Buda Castle, the famous thermal baths, and botanical gardens.

In the evening, prepare for an enchanting dinner at a private venue. Dress code: smart elegant.

Day 5: Hungary

The day starts with a guided tour of the Hungarian Parliament Building, which was famously inspired by London’s Houses of Parliament.

Reboard the train in the late morning and enjoy lunch as you glide through vineyards and forests of Hungary. A final fabulous dinner, curated by our visionary chef, is served to celebrate your last night on board. Relax in Bar Car ‘3674’ listening to music as you swap stories with new-found friends.

Day 6: Paris

Linger over a French breakfast in your cabin as the train travels through Switzerland. Soon, we reach France and, thrillingly, the vineyards of Champagne. Here, ambassadors join the train and guide you through a wonderful champagne experience.

Afterwards, a sumptuous farewell lunch is served. When the train pulls into Paris, disembark, taking your unique memories with you.

Your private transfer driver will meet you at the station and transfer you to your Paris hotel for a seamless end to your adventure.

SINAÏA, UNE VILLE ÉTONNANTE Ce matin, rejoignez le train et détendez-vous autour d'un délicieux brunch dans l'une des élégantes voitures-restaurants pendant que vous vous dirigez vers la ville montagneuse de Sinaia. Montez à bord d'un autocar pour le court trajet jusqu'au château de Peles, le palais de conte de fées construit par le roi Carol de Roumanie pour sa retraite d'été. Les tout premiers passagers de l'Orient Express ont visité cette magnifique résidence en octobre 1883, à l'invitation personnelle du roi.

Retour au train en fin d'après-midi pour un voyage tranquille vers la Hongrie. Profitez d'un autre dîner délicieux et d'une nuit relaxante à bord.

À l'arrivée à Budapest, vous profiterez d'un court trajet d'orientation en autocar à travers la ville, suivi d'une croisière panoramique sur le Danube, pour vous imprégner de l'architecture gracieuse et de la beauté intemporelle de la ville. Arrivée à l'hôtel après le déjeuner.

LES CABINES

Les banquettes offrent un point de vue idéal pour observer le paysage pendant la journée, tandis que les couchettes convertibles - avec une literie douce et luxueuse - transforment la cabine en un lieu de retraite intime pendant la nuit. Le petit-déjeuner du matin peut même être servi dans votre lit, si vous le souhaitez. Le train Venice Simplon-Orient-Express est une référence incontournable dans la culture populaire. Les lecteurs passionnés et les amateurs de cinéma ont été transportés par les aventures des célèbres personnages tels qu'Hercule Poirot dans le roman d'Agatha Christie, Le Crime de l'Orient-Express, ou encore James Bond dans le film Bons Baisers de Russie. Luxe, romance et mystère sont les maîtres mots qui définissent la fameuse compagnie Belmond Venise Simplon-Orient-Express . Ce train prestigieux, célèbre à travers le monde, est bien plus qu'un simple moyen de transport. Il ne compte pas moins de 17 voitures somptueuses construites entre 1926 et 1931 qui accueillent les voyageurs. Ce chef-d'œuvre ferroviaire et ses voitures luxueuses ont été inaugurées en octobre 1883, après des essais menés par l'ingénieur Georges Nagelmakers. Les voitures-restaurants légendaires ne vaudraient pas grand-chose sans une cuisine composée de chefs de renommée mondiale, capables de préparer les repas les plus raffinés à 100 milles à l'heure. Bien que compacte, notre cuisine est une merveille d'ingénierie moderne qui n'a d'égal que les chefs qui la dirigent. C'est le chef Jean Imbert et son équipe qui s'occuperont de préparer les petits-déjeuners à la française et les délicieux déjeuners à trois plats. Vos repas à bord seront inoubliables. L’éclairage légèrement tamisé crée l’ambiance et les nappes damassées, les verres en cristal et l’argenterie française vous invitent à un dîner dont vous vous souviendrez. Les menus à base de produits frais et de saison allient ingénieusement les gastronomies françaises et italiennes, l'influence de l'une ou de l'autre se faisant davantage sentir suivant le sens du train. La qualité des plats, ajoutée à la beauté du décor, explique que le train ait été reconnu membre d'honneur des Relais et Châteaux.

La restauration à bord du mythique train Venice Simplon-Orient-Express est une expérience inoubliable. Pouvez-vous imaginer un restaurant qui offre une vue aussi époustouflante en si peu de temps ? Le train compte trois voitures restaurants où vous pourrez vous immerger dans une ambiance des années 1920 avec des détails soigneusement travaillés, un éclairage tamisé et une atmosphère feutrée. Vous dégusterez votre repas avec des couverts luxueux et des verres en cristal. Le nouveau chef, Jean Imbert, remplace Christian Bodiguel qui était en poste depuis 30 ans. Le chef met tout son cœur dans la création d'un voyage gastronomique mémorable. Sa volonté et celle de son équipe en cuisine est de mettre en avant les produits frais, locaux et issu des circuits courts. Cette étape est indispensable lors de votre séjour à bord du train légendaire.

Étoile du Nord

La voiture-restaurant de l'Étoile du Nord a été construite en 1926 et présente certaines des marqueteries les plus célèbres du réseau continental. Elle a assuré le service de l'Étoile du Nord au départ de Paris, avant de rejoindre le Lusitania Express de Lisbonne à Madrid, et d'achever son service dans les années 1970. Aujourd'hui restaurée dans toute sa splendeur, l'Étoile du Nord est l'une de nos voitures vedettes.

Côte d'Azur

Célèbre pour ses magnifiques verres René Lalique, la voiture-restaurant Côte d'Azur a été construite en 1929 et a été pendant de nombreuses années un élément essentiel des voyages d'hiver entre Paris et Calais. En 1961, la voiture s'est retrouvée dans un pool de réserve et a été stockée à l'usine Wagons-Lits de Villeneuve, jusqu'à ce qu'elle soit sauvée et restaurée par le Venice Simplon-Orient-Express en 1981.

Construite à Birmingham en 1927 dans le style de l'Etoile du Nord, la voiture-restaurant L'Oriental a assuré un service luxueux entre Paris et Amsterdam pendant de nombreuses années avant de rejoindre le célèbre Lusitania Express. Day 1 Paris

The blue and gold of the legendary Venice Simplon-Oriënt-Express carriages welcomes you in the afternoon at Paris Gare de l'Est station. You´ll be escorted to your compartment where you can settle down in peace and prepare for dinner, one of the highlights of this trip. The four-course dinner will be served in one of the dining cars. You´ll spend the night on board of the train.

Day 2 Budapest

Breakfast is served in your private compartment. Via the beautiful Switzerland and Austria you travel to Hungary. After lunch on board you´ll arrive in Budapest in the afternoon. Transfer to your luxury hotel, the Hilton Hotel or similar, for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3 Budapest

Breakfast at the hotel is followed by a city tour of beautiful Budapest, lunch at a local restaurant and a cruise on the Danube River. The districts of Buda and Pest are separated by the Danube. The city has a number of prominent buildings, such as the Parliament, St. Stephen's Basilica and the Castle Palace. The bathhouses aren´t only invigorating but also a feast for the eyes. Late in the afternoon the train leaves for Romania. Dinner and overnight stay on board of the train.

Day 4 Sinaia and Bucharest

Enjoy breakfast in your private compartment. The train arrives in the mountain town of Sinaia where you disembark after brunch to visit the beautiful Peles Castle, just like the first guests of the Orient Express in 1833. Later you´ll board the train again for a short ride to Bucharest. Upon arrival, a driver will be waiting for you for the transfer to your hotel, the Anthenée Palace Hilton or similar. It´s clear to see that Bucharest has both wetter and oriental influences. There´s the immense parliament building, the largest building in Europe, and many churches, parks and French architecture. Dinner and overnight stay in Bucharest.

Day 5 Bulgaria

In the morning you get on the train again and travel to Bulgaria. In the afternoon you´ll make a stop in Varna, the maritime capital of Bulgaria, also known as the 'Pearl of the Black Sea'. Lunch and dinner will be served on board while you enjoy the view. Last night aboard the train.

Day 6 Istanbul

Early in the morning you drive into Turkey. After breakfast and a special Turkish inspired lunch you arrive in Istanbul and end your journey with the Venice Simplon-Oriënt-Express.

Dinner is a sumptuous affair, prepared on board by our skilled chefs and served in one of the beautifully restored dining cars. 11 Things I Wish I’d Known Before Going on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

Tips on how to pack, when to eat, and what else to expect on the european rail trip of a lifetime..

For a lot of people, a journey on an antique luxury train such as the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (VSOE) is a dream come true, even if they’ve never read or seen Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express . The ride is an opportunity to return to the golden age of train travel, when passengers handed off their steamer trunks to white-gloved stewards and dined on porcelain plates.

Each itinerary has its own rewards, and indeed, every night is different depending on where you’re going and who you’re with. Here’s what I learned during my own train journey from Venice through Vienna to London on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express with Belmond.

There are several routes—research the itinerary that’s right for you

The original Orient Express ran between Paris and Istanbul, with stops in Hungary and Romania, but on Belmond’s Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, there are nearly two dozen journeys you can take. A five-night itinerary from Paris to Istanbul is offered only a few times in the spring and summer and includes three nights on the train. The 2024 dates are May 31 to June 5 (Paris to Istanbul), June 7 to June 12 (Istanbul to Paris), August 23 to August 30 (Paris to Istanbul), and August 30 to September 4 (Istanbul to Paris).

At other times, trips include stops in such cities as Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Verona, Amsterdam, Florence, Rome, Brussels, and Innsbruck.

Note that if your itinerary includes London (which many do), you’ll actually take a bus through the Chunnel before picking up a train on the other side. Passengers ride another Belmond train, the British Pullman, in England and the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in Europe.

Knowing what I know now from riding from Venice to London with the Chunnel interruption at the end of the trip, I would do my itinerary in reverse to experience more of a crescendo: Start in London with a stay at Belmond’s stylish Cadogan Hotel in Chelsea, ride on the Pullman, then take the more luxurious VSOE to Venice. To top it all off? A night at the dreamy Belmond Hotel Cipriani on the Venetian island of Giudecca.

As you book, think about how much time you want to spend on the train and how the journey itself will unfold. If you board in the afternoon and get off again early the next morning, you’ll miss more of the scenery via train and may not get to enjoy a leisurely breakfast or brunch—but you’ll have more time in your final destination.

If you board in the morning and arrive at your destination late the next night, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the VSOE, but be prepared for a lot of sitting around. My favorite leg of the trip was when I had about 24 hours riding rather than rushing to disembark on time.

There’s no such thing as too dressy . . .

Guests are informed of the dress code in advance of the trip. Jeans and tennis shoes are not acceptable daywear, and formal attire is requested for dinner. It’s no joke. I saw folks dressed in tuxedos and floor-length ballgowns and wearing antique jewelry. My advice? Embrace it. I was a bit intimidated by the idea of dressing up. But it turned out to be fun, almost like putting on a costume.

. . . but don’t panic if you’re not a fashionista

During the day, I wore a couple of simple linen dresses; for dinners, I brought two cocktail dresses. The train is a great opportunity to recycle wedding party attire you thought you’d never wear again or to check out the vintage section of a thrift shop. Services like Rent the Runway let you wear fancy clothes without having to buy them.

All that being said, try to fit everything in an overnight bag and a carry-on suitcase . The train compartments are authentically small, with only narrow overhead luggage racks and a couple of hangers for long garments. Large suitcases will be put into the train’s storage, and you won’t have access to them during the ride. I was fine fitting my beloved Osprey Meridian carry-on (sans day pack) and a Steve Madden weekender bag in my compartment.

(Though the Meridian is no longer available, the Osprey Fairview wheeled travel pack is similar.)

Take in the details

Riding on the VSOE truly is like being inside a time capsule; each car was built between 1926 and 1949 and has been meticulously restored. One of the most celebrated design moments onboard is the intricate glass windows in the dining car, designed by René Lalique in a Côte d’Azur style in 1929. The Grand Suites , meanwhile, are a masterclass in art deco style with hand-beaded embroidery, rich color palettes across plush fabrics, and special design elements inspired by Orient Express destinations like Paris, Istanbul, and Vienna. To step into one of the historic cabins is to be instantly transported to the 1920s.

Read the placards that describe each carriage’s history (car 3544 was reportedly used as a wartime brothel), track down car 3309 to admire the art deco marquetry panels by lauded French designer René Prou, and make time to admire such details as the painted flowers adorning your ceramic wash basin.

The bar car 3674 was refurbished in 2016; guests socialize here until late into the night.

Unplug . . .

It’s a lot easier to enjoy the views, get to know fellow passengers, or write postcards (anything posted from the train itself will get a special Venice Simplon-Orient-Express stamp) when you’re not looking at your phone.

. . . but don’t forget to take some photos

There are so many magical elements on the VSOE, it’s hard to keep track. I took plenty of pictures of the train, but once I got home I realized that I only had a couple photos of myself. As a solo traveler , I wish I had asked fellow riders to help me document the occasion. I had gotten dressed up after all, and sometimes a selfie just won’t cut it.

Be prepared to eat—A LOT

Most overnight itineraries include afternoon tea, dinner, and breakfast or brunch the next day. When I boarded in Venice, I was welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine, then served afternoon tea with five different sweets. Only a couple hours later, there were snacks for cocktail hour, and supper was a four-course meal.

Decide if you’re an early bird or a night owl

There are two dinner seatings on the VSOE: one around 7 p.m., the other around 9 p.m. The maître d’ will note your seating preference in the afternoon and will also ask if you’re open to sitting with other travelers.

Eat early and you’ll have more time to digest all five courses before going to bed. Eat late and you’ll have to wait until the first shift finishes up in the dining cars.

The resident pianist plays in the bar car from 6 p.m. to midnight nightly, sometimes longer if passengers are still enjoying themselves later than that. Either way, there’s plenty of time for drinks before or after dinner—the bar car doesn’t close until the last guest has left.

Because of my route, I was able to try dinner at both times and personally, I ended up liking the later seating more; there was a bigger gap between afternoon tea and dinner, and I felt like I had even more time to make friends in the bar car before heading to the meal seating than during the earlier seating.

Breakfast aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express includes fresh fruit, pastries, tea or coffee, and juice.

Manage your expectations

Yes, a trip on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is the trip of a lifetime. But you’re still riding an antique train. Unless you’ve booked one of the six grand suites , you’ll have to use the toilet at the end of each car. Twin cabins have bunk beds; if you’re traveling with someone else, your compartment will be, well, intimate. There is an option to book a double cabin, which adjoins two singles that can be combined as a double bed allowing for more space. As comfortable as the beds may be, there will be some jolts and bumps during the night. If the clacking of the tracks will keep you awake, bring earplugs.

Grand Suites on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express have a double bed and en suite toilets.

Meet your fellow passengers

Many different types of travelers ride on the VSOE. I met couples, a mother-daughter duo, a family with two young children, former college roommates, and another solo female traveler. Some were Agatha Christie buffs, others wanted to bask in the atmosphere. Those looking for a bit of serenity could relax in the comfort of their cabin and dine alone or with only their traveling companions. Others could dine with strangers or chat in the bar car. Striking up a conversation is easy—just start with, “What brought you on the train?”

day 1 – london to paris and departure from paris on the orient express.

Your holiday begins as you enter the stunningly restored London St. Pancras International station.

Let the holiday mood take over as you board the Eurostar service for the high-speed journey to Paris in little over two hours.

Sit back and relax in your spacious Standard Premier Class seat and make the most of the light meal and drinks. On arrival in Paris you make your own way the short distance from the Gare du Nord to the Gare de l’Est.

Here you board the splendid Wagons-Lits carriages of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

Your steward will show you to your private cabin and will attend to you throughout your journey.

Spend the afternoon relaxing in the comfort of your cabin gazing at the beautiful passing scenery through France and towards Germany, or chatting with fellow travellers in the Bar Car.

After further relaxation it will soon be time to dress for dinner.

Why not sip a pre-dinner cocktail before making your way to one of the magnificent restaurant cars?

Here you will be served a delicious four-course dinner, prepared by skilled French chefs.

After dinner you may want to linger in the bar car, listening to the sound of the baby grand piano.

When you are ready, retire to your compartment, which has now been transformed into a cosy bedroom.

Day 2 – Arrival in Budapest

This morning enjoy a continental breakfast in your cabin and relish the views through your window as the train winds its way through Austria and into Hungary.

A delicious three-course lunch will be served prior to your arrival in Budapest.

On arrival in Budapest, local guides will be waiting to take you by coach to the Gresham Four Seasons Hotel, located at the end of Budapest’s renowned Chain Bridge, boasting panoramic views of the River Danube and the hills of Buda.

In the evening you will be escorted to a nearby private venue for dinner (suggested dress code is smart casual).

Day 3 – Budapest to Bucharest

This morning enjoy the hotel’s buffet breakfast before departing on foot to discover the historic sights of Buda.

Enjoy lunch at an authentic local Hungarian Restaurant.

The tour ends at the station where you reboard the train.

Once aboard relax over a cocktail or aperitif in the Bar Car before sitting down to a delectable dinner as the train travels into Romania.

Retire to your cabin, which has been transformed into a cosy bedroom for the night.

Day 4 – Tour of Sinaia and arrival into Bucharest

You wake this morning to a continental breakfast served in your cabin as you enjoy the passing scenery.

A delicious brunch is served in the restaurant cars before the train arrives at the mountain town of Sinaia.

You will be escorted by coach the short distance to Peles Castle, the fairy-tale palace built by Romania’s first king as the royal family’s summer retreat.

Visitors may be interested to know that the inaugural Orient Express guests visited this magnificent residence in 1883 at the personal invitation of the King.

The Orient Express recommends comfortable shoes and a sweater or an overcoat for your visit.

Re-join the train as the train continues its journey to Bucharest.

On arrival in Bucharest, you are escorted by local guides to your hotel, the Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel, located next door to the Palace of the Parliament and a few moments from the Old Town.  

Dinner is served at a private venue (suggested dress code is a jacket and tie for gentlemen and equivalent for ladies).  

Day 5 – Bucharest to Istanbul

This morning after a buffet breakfast at your hotel, the train awaits you for the final part of your journey to Turkey.

Relax on board as you travel south across the mighty River Danube and into Bulgaria.

During the afternoon, a stop is made at the delightful seaside resort of Varna on the Black Sea coast before the train continues its journey.

A delectable lunch and sumptuous dinner are served in the train’s beautifully restored restaurant cars.

Enjoy your final night on board as the train crosses the ancient Thracian Plain.

Day 6 – Scenic journey through Turkey to Istanbul

You awake this morning to a continental breakfast served in your cabin as the train journeys through Turkey.

Spend the morning admiring vistas through your window before enjoying a delicious lunch in one of the restaurant cars, introducing you to Turkish flavours.

All too soon your journey draws to a close as the train arrives into Istanbul Sirkeci station.

Days 7 and 8 – Exploring Istanbul

Paris – Istanbul : Sur les Traces d’un Mythe Ferroviaire

Quoi de plus mythique et envoûtant que l’Orient-Express, ce train de légende qui reliait Paris à Istanbul à la fin du 19e siècle ? Son nom seul évoque tout un imaginaire de voyages fastueux, de décors art déco, d’intrigues mystérieuses dignes d’Agatha Christie. Mais saviez-vous qu’il est possible, aujourd’hui encore, de refaire ce trajet historique en train régulier, sans se ruiner ? Embarquez pour un périple inoubliable à travers l’Europe centrale et les Balkans, avec des escales dans certaines des plus belles capitales du continent.

L’Itinéraire Historique de l’Orient-Express

Lancé en 1883 par l’entrepreneur belge Georges Nagelmackers, l’Orient-Express d’origine reliait Paris à Constantinople (l’actuelle Istanbul) en passant par Strasbourg, Munich, Vienne, Budapest et Bucarest. Après Constantinople, il était même possible de poursuivre jusqu’à Alexandrie en Egypte !

Ce trajet inaugural reste dans les mémoires comme l’âge d’or du train, associé au luxe, au raffinement et au glamour de la Belle Époque. Rois, espions, artistes, courtisanes… Tout le gotha européen s’y croisait dans un décor digne des palaces, avec lits en acajou, tapis moelleux, linge en batiste et personnel aux petits soins. Agatha Christie y puisera l’inspiration pour son célèbre « Crime de l’Orient-Express » en 1934.

Si l’itinéraire a connu de multiples évolutions au fil des années, notamment pendant les deux guerres mondiales, il est tout à fait réalisable de nos jours de retracer le parcours classique par trains réguliers de jour comme de nuit, avec des arrêts dans les villes emblématiques autrefois desservies par ce train mythique. Une façon de conjuguer frissons nostalgiques et plaisir des voyages d’aujourd’hui !

Au total, il faut donc compter 4 à 5 jours et 3 à 4 nuits pour rallier Istanbul depuis Paris, selon l’option retenue (via la Bulgarie ou avec une étape à Sofia). Le temps de trajet effectif est d’environ 60h en comptant les nuits en train, mais il faut y ajouter les délais entre les correspondances et les éventuelles pauses déjeuner/dîner.

Le voyage peut bien sûr être fractionné en faisant des escales plus longues dans certaines villes, pour profiter pleinement des capitales d’Europe centrale et des Balkans. Tout est affaire de rythme et d’envies ! L’idéal est de se réserver au minimum une demi-journée dans les métropoles majeures comme Vienne, Budapest ou Bucarest.

En termes de budget, il faut tabler sur un coût d’environ 300€ pour l’ensemble des trajets en seconde classe. À cela s’ajoutent les éventuels suppléments pour une couchette ou un compartiment privatif, ainsi que les frais de repas et d’hébergement durant les escales. Un budget raisonnable pour s’offrir un périple d’exception !

Les Grandes Étapes Incontournables

Que vous optiez pour des trains de jour ou de nuit, certaines étapes s’imposent pour qui veut marcher dans les pas de l’Orient-Express.

Après un départ de la gare de l’Est à Paris, cap sur l’Europe centrale avec une première escale à Munich. La capitale bavaroise se laisse découvrir le temps d’une chope dans une brasserie typique ou d’un tour sur la Marienplatz, au pied du néo-gothique hôtel de ville.

Direction ensuite Vienne, la capitale autrichienne au charme suranné, célèbre pour son architecture fastueuse, sa vie musicale et sa fameuse Sachertorte, le dessert emblématique de la ville. Ne manquez pas le trésor baroque du palais de Schönbrunn, ancienne résidence d’été des Habsbourg.

Le voyage se poursuit vers Budapest, perle du Danube. Flânez dans le quartier du château sur les hauteurs de Buda, puis admirez sur l’autre rive à Pest le majestueux Parlement néo-gothique, imposant joyau classé à l’Unesco. Et pourquoi ne pas faire une pause détente dans l’un des fabuleux thermes de la ville, comme ceux de Szechenyi et ses bassins d’eau chaude en plein air ?

Cap ensuite sur les Balkans avec Bucarest, la trépidante métropole roumaine en pleine effervescence culturelle et créative. Surnommée le « petit Paris » pour son architecture Belle Époque, la ville possède aussi un étonnant charme post-communiste avec son monumental palais du Parlement, pastiche stalinien aux dimensions hallucinantes.

De là, deux options pour la suite : continuer directement vers la Turquie via la Bulgarie, ou faire une escale préalable à Sofia, surprenante capitale nichée au pied du mont Vitocha. Encore confidentielle, Sofia mêle avec bonheur traditions et avant-gardisme, des vestiges thraco-romains aux fresques monumentales héritées de l’époque soviétique.

Terminus Istanbul dans les deux cas, avec son envoutante silhouette entre Europe et Asie, ses dômes et minarets se reflétant dans les eaux du Bosphore. Le dépaysement ultime vous attend dans l’effervescence du grand bazar ou la contemplation des mosaïques bizantines de Sainte-Sophie. Bienvenue au carrefour de l’Orient et de l’Occident !

Voyager comme à la Belle Époque

Si l’Orient-Express historique a cessé de circuler en 1977, il existe aujourd’hui plusieurs trains de luxe permettant de retrouver l’atmosphère et le faste d’antan, comme le Venice Simplon-Orient-Express ou l’Eastern & Oriental Express en Asie du Sud-Est.

Ces joyaux ferroviaires ont su recréer l’esprit Belle Époque avec leurs somptueuses voitures-lits des années 20, restaurant et bar au décor précieux, élégant service en uniforme d’époque. Le temps d’un trajet Paris-Istanbul ou d’une escapade de quelques jours, le voyageur se glisse avec délice dans la peau d’un gentleman fortuné au temps du rail roi.

Le prix élevé de ces trains de légende les rend cependant peu accessibles au plus grand nombre. D’où l’intérêt de partir sur les traces de l’Orient-Express en mode routard, avec des trains locaux souvent pittoresques et riches de rencontres inopinées. De quoi vivre l’aventure ferroviaire version XXIe siècle !

Astuces et Conseils pour un Voyage Réussi

Contrairement aux voyages clé en main dans les trains de luxe se revendiquant de l’Orient-Express, un périple en trains réguliers nécessite une certaine dose de préparation et d’organisation. Voici quelques conseils pratiques pour un trajet sans accroc :

• Réservez vos billets à l’avance, surtout pour les trains de nuit. Certains billets (Bulgarie-Turquie notamment) ne sont pas vendus en ligne mais uniquement en gare. Mieux vaut anticiper pour être sûr d’avoir de la place et éviter les mauvaises surprises.
• En train de nuit, préférez si possible un compartiment privatif à une simple couchette pour plus de confort et d’intimité. Certes plus onéreux, mais le supplément en vaut la chandelle pour bien dormir et profiter de commodités comme un lavabo ou des prises électriques. Prévoyez aussi de quoi vous rafraichir (lingettes, brumisateur…) en cas de chaleur.
• Renseignez-vous bien sur les arrêts et correspondances de votre itinéraire, et prévoyez des marges entre deux trains pour parer aux éventuels retards. Mieux vaut perdre une heure en gare que de voir son train filer sous son nez ! Un service d’assistance proposé par certains voyagistes peut vous aider à y voir plus clair.
• Profitez des longues pauses dans les capitales traversées pour visiter et vous imprégner de l’atmosphère des lieux. C’est tout l’intérêt du voyage au long cours : se laisser le temps de la découverte et de la flânerie urbaine, sans stress. Les escales font pleinement partie du voyage !

There, your local guides are waiting to escort you by coach to a river boat for a short, scenic cruise on the Danube. Afterwards, check in at your luxury hotel, where there's time to refresh before heading out to the Museum of Fine Arts for a lavish, private dinner.

Day 3 - Budapest : After breakfast at your hotel, enjoy a guided tour of the Hungarian Parliament Building, which was famously inspired by London's Houses of Parliament. Day 6 - Istanbul : As breakfast is served in your cabin, the train passes into Turkey, stopping at the border crossing point of Kapikule for customs formalities. Take. Board a coach for the short journey to Peles Castle, the Neo-Renaissance palace built by King Carol as his summer retreat. You're following in historic footsteps: the inaugural Orient Express passengers visited the castle at the King's personal invitation in October 1883. Return to the train late in the afternoon and continue your journey on towards Hungary. Enjoy your dinner and overnight on board.

Day 4 - Budapest : Continental breakfast is served as the train approaches Budapest. Disembark here for a short orientation coach ride through the city, enjoy a panoramic cruise along the River Danube, soaking up the city's graceful architecture and timeless beauty. A lunch of Hungarian specialities is served before you are escorted to your hotel. In the afternoon, explore the capital at leisure. Buda is on one side of the river and Pest on the other. The two sides were united in 1873 to become a single city - Budapest. In the evening, prepare for an enchanting dinner at a private venue.

Day 5 - VSOE : After breakfast at your hotel, take a guided tour of the Hungarian Parliament Building, which was famously inspired by London's Houses of Parliament. Le train jumeau d'Orient Express, le Simplon Orient Express (plus tard connu sous le nom de Direct Orient Express), a également parcouru un itinéraire de Paris à Istanbul, mais s'est dirigé vers le sud en passant par la Lausanne, Simplon, Milan, Venise, Belgrade et Sofia avant d'arriver à Istanbul.

Orient-Express : l’itinéraire et le prix du train le plus mythique d'Europe

Observer les paysages défiler lentement. Ressentir la magie de suspendre le temps. Se prélasser dans une cabine luxueuse et confortable. Qui n'a jamais rêvé de réaliser, au moins une fois dans sa vie, une épopée ferroviaire à bord du mythique Orient-Express ?

Près de cent cinquante ans après son inauguration, ce train emblématique revient avec un design inspiré des années 1920, repensé par l'architecte d'intérieur Maxime d’Angeac. « Pour ce train mythique dont le nom ne soulève que rêves et fantasme, il ne s’agissait pas de faire un copié collé de l’Orient-Express original, mais plutôt de recréer l’ambiance d’un train exceptionnel qui véhiculerait le même esprit, version XXIe siècle » , explique l’architecte. Embarquez dans l'histoire en explorant le riche passé de ce train légendaire… Pourquoi ne pas même planifier un voyage à son bord ?

D’où vient la renommée de ce train mythique ?

Tout commence par un chagrin d’amour. En 1867, Georges Nagelmackers, jeune ingénieur belge, s’exile aux États-Unis pour fuir une déception amoureuse. Là-bas, il découvre les premiers wagons-lits du monde. Inspiré par son séjour, il rentre en Europe et fonde en 1872 la Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. Son ambition ? Intégrer des lits dans les trains pour offrir à sa clientèle fortunée le confort d’un hôtel.

En octobre 1883, le premier voyage de l’Orient-Express – ainsi baptisé par les journalistes - est inauguré. Il quitte la gare de Paris-Est pour rejoindre Constantinople. Pour la première fois, le célébrissime train va permettre à ses voyageurs de traverser l’Europe sans correspondance. En un voyage, la géographie est bouleversée ; la notion de voyage est redéfinie.

L’audacieux Georges Nagelmackers ne s’arrête pas là. En 1894, il lance la Compagnie Internationale des Grands Hôtels, ouvrant de somptueux palaces le long du trajet de l’Orient-Express pour prolonger l’expérience de luxe. Dans les années 1920, les décorateurs René Prou et René Lalique apportent une touche Art déco aux voitures-salons. Agatha Christie publie ensuite « Le Crime de l'Orient-Express » (1934), un roman policier qui alimente l’imaginaire des voyageurs. Cependant, ces innovations ne suffisent pas. L’essor de l’aviation et l’arrivée des trains à grande vitesse marquent le déclin de l'Orient-Express, trop lent pour suivre la cadence de la révolution qui est en marche. Le 20 mai 1977, le train effectue tristement son dernier voyage entre Paris et Istanbul. Les wagons mythiques sont mis aux enchères, convertis en objets de musée ou en trains rénovés. Une époque prend fin.

Aujourd'hui, l’Orient-Express renaît. « En me glissant dans la peau de ses créateurs, de René Prou à Suzanne Lalique, j’ai tenté de réinterpréter l’histoire de ce train de légende, sans nostalgie aucune, mais avec le désir de prolonger son histoire » , précise Maxime d’Angeac , qui signe le décor du nouveau train Nostalgie-Istanbul-Orient-Express du groupe hôtelier Accor. Composé de dix-sept voitures, cette machine mythique offre des suites somptueuses qui mêlent cuir, bois, nacre et bronze. À l'intérieur, luminaires Art Déco et moquettes se rencontrent. Le restaurant, sous un plafond en miroir et des arches en bois sombre, évoque les tapisseries de Suzanne Lalique. Les musts ? La Voiture-Bar aux teintes vertes chaleureuses et la spectaculaire Suite Présidentielle .

Dès 2025, le Nostalgie-Istanbul-Orient-Express inaugurera ses croisières ferroviaires à travers toute l'Europe, en incluant l’itinéraire légendaire de Paris à Istanbul. Parallèlement à son lancement, le train La Dolce Vita-Orient-Express, évoquant l' Italie glamour des années 1960, accueillera ses premiers passagers en 2024. Vues panoramiques, expériences historiques et gastronomiques personnalisées… Huit trajets distincts permettront d'explorer les régions les plus emblématiques d'Italie. Parmi eux, six circuits partent de Rome , où les voyageurs séjourneront à l'hôtel Orient-Express Minerva, le premier hôtel italien signé Orient-Express. Et avant de quitter la gare de Roma Termini, ils auront le privilège de se détendre dans le luxueux salon privé de l'Orient-Express :

• Rome-Venise-Portofino (3 jours, 2 nuits), pour explorer Venise
• Rome -Venise -Sienne (3 jours, 2 nuits), pour une immersion à Sienne
• Rome-Palena-Matera (3 jours, 2 nuits), pour admirer les sites classés au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO .
• Rome-Maratea-Taormine-Palerme (3 jours, 2 nuits), pour se baigner dans des plages idylliques

L'Orient-Express entend maintenir son prestige. Pour une expérience à bord du train La Dolce Vita-Orient-Express, les tarifs débutent à 3500 euros par passager pour une nuit en cabine et s'élèvent à 4700 euros pour une nuit en suite. Ce prix comprend l'hébergement somptueux, une restauration gastronomique, des divertissements à bord, ainsi que des excursions soigneusement sélectionnées. Quant au train Nostalgie-Istanbul-Orient-Express, dont le lancement est prévu pour 2025, il proposera une gamme de prix similaire, dans la continuité de la légende de l'Orient-Express.

Iconic Orient Express arrives in Istanbul, set to depart Friday

Orient express, which departed france on june 1, arrived in istanbul, will leave türkiye on june 7.

The Orient Express arrived Wednesday in Istanbul after starting Saturday in Paris.

The Transport and Infrastructure Ministry said the train was greeted by a Mehteran band at Sirkeci Station.

Following the Zurich, Vienna, Budapest, Bucharest and Varna, Bulgaria route, the Orient Express will depart from the Sirkeci Station at 16.05 local time June 7 and exit Türkiye at 00:40 on June 8.

The train made two trips to Türkiye on June 7 and Aug. 28 last year. And rwo trips are also planned this year.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu noted that 48 people arrived in Türkiye on the "Palace on Wheels," as the Orient Express is known, and 38 will travel on the return journey.

A new group of passengers arriving by plane to Istanbul will join the return trip. Uraloglu added that the Orient Express will make a second trip to Istanbul on Aug. 28th and return Aug. 30th.

"The train, which began its journeys in 1883 on a route extending from Paris to Istanbul, has connected various cities across Europe and became a popular travel route among aristocrats, business people, and adventurers," he said.

The Orient Express is made up of 14 carriages, including sleeping, lounge and restaurant cars.
